When I first joined his class he seemed like a young and cool guy, but as the semester progressed I realized that's not so much the case. He assigns lots of homework, mostly reading and annotating, and I never felt like it benefitted me in any way. His essays are straight forward. If you follow his EXACT grading criteria then you should be fine.
he's a fantastic teacher and makes class a lot of fun
Prof B is the best professor I've had. He's smart, he wants to be there and to see you succeed, he's down to earth, and he's very funny. You have to pay attention and read your assignments, this class is not an easy A. If you need help, however, he will certainly give it to you. My old classmates and I always end up talking about missing his class!
This is a great professor. Top quality.
Mr B was a great professor. Although he gave lots of work it benefited me tremendously. He gives out exact word for word instructions on what exactly you have to do in all assignments which made it very easy. I definitely recommend taking his class.
Do not take this class if youre taking many credits, the homework load would kill you, and its worst when he doesn't come to class, because the make up assignments are horrible and can literally take a whole day to complete.
Mr. B is an excellent teacher. There is a lot of homework but all of it makes the papers easier. He also gives you a whole week to revise your papers after he gives you comments and sample A papers. He answers emails fast and seems to enjoy helping. Attendance is a big deal and the work isn't easy but the class is worth your time.
Great teacher
Awesome teacher! He gives great feedback on papers and grades generously. Just a warning, he does give lots of homework!
Prof B was amazing, he was the best English teacher I've ever had from middle to HS. Don't skip class or you get a 0 on every assignment. He's hilarious but serious about work. Stay organized and on top of things. Homework just about every night, but not too hard. Easy to get along with. Great class discussions. Gives great feedback on papers!
Professor B is an awesome teacher. He genuinely cares about his students. Tough grader but only if you don't follow his guidelines!! He posts examples of every assignment, so take advantage of it. All the main assignments are papers but are not too difficult as long as you participate and ask questions if you need help. My favorite teacher
I took this teacher for 111 and 112 and I learned a lot. It is hard and you have to write and read until you fall asleep but he is a great teacher.
Expect 60+ pages a class. Expect to have to treat this class like it's a 4 credit. You can't get ahead in the readings. He laughs at you as you stress trying to finish his work. Read directions very closely. Two assignments that are the same, he will change what he is looking for and it can cost you up to a letter grade on that assignment.
Fun class! Mr. B is hilarious and breaks down each assignment specifically. If you do the homework and come to class, its easy to get a good grade. I always felt like he cared about how I was doing and if I understood everything. Loves Star Wars!
Good experience! The reading is rough but there are two entire 1000+ page textbooks to cover. He explains everything and there are group activities every class. You get to choose whatever topic you want for the papers and there is class time for research. Hell mark up your rough draft for edits before grading. Hilariously sarcastic!
Professor B is the best teacher I've ever had in my life. I loved his class so much that I made sure to take 112 with him too. He's great at communicating with his students so don't be afraid to email him or meet him in the REAL center. I recommend professor Burford to anyone who's looking to take English at WT. If only there were more like prof. B
Mr. B was absolutely incredible! I tried to see if I could take ENG 112 with him but didn't see any availability. Lots of homework which included papers but everything we did in class was purposeful for our grades. Would definitely recommend!
Professor Burford is amazing. He teaches his class in his own way, and his care for each student is evident in his actions. He not only is great at teaching, but he makes sure the class is interesting. He assigns lots of homework, and will make sure you work hard for your grade. The homework is massive, so if you are lazy you will fail.
He's a great teacher but if you hate homework, you will hate this class. He sometimes cusses, but he's funny. He makes you print 3 copies of most papers to proof read in class. Sometimes proof reading is a little confusing because the instructions aren't given clearly. Overall good class just a lot of work.
Best English prof you'll ever get. Does great reviews of drafts before you turn them in, and grades very fairly. Spaces stuff out too so you can't procrastinate so that's a plus. Super funny as well, overall great prof.
Mr. B is a great professor and really funny, but he gives out a lot of homework that require written out responses and reading. It's easy, but don't procrastinate. Other than that, he's not a heavy grader and the class is fun to be in. He has also been, by far, the best teacher I have ever had in regards to giving constructive feedback on work!
Prof Burford was is a super nice guy! In class work is super easy but online portion can be a little heavy. Lots of group work and discussions.
Mr. Burford is awesome! He helped me get an A. He really cares about the students and is quick to respond. Its a lot of work but hes not an extremely tough grader
The teacher was not bad I was just lazy. However, theres a lot of homework and readings with taking notes. Do not miss the quizzes and peer review. If you stick to that youll pass the class.
He's very clear with what he expects and he also reviews them for us before they're due. Homework and article heavy. Regardless, he was one of the coolest professors I've had so far. If you want to become a better writer, his class is the place to go without a doubt. The one class I actually used what I learned in my personal life.
The teacher is nice and understanding. However, be ready to read, take notes, have quizzes. Peer reviews are mandatory and count as absences. If you're ready to get a lot of homework and write papers in between classes you should take him. Also had a lot of classes with that one which is why it was hard for me.
Mr.B is an amazing teacher and is always there to help whenever you need him. Although it is a lot of work it really pays off in the long run. Mr.B also gives good feedback when it comes to papers!
Mr.B is the best English teacher ever I HIGHLY recommend him. He's always there to help when you need him. He's absolutely hilarious and really laid back. Workload was pretty light not too much. Listen to me and TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!
Gives great feedback, cares about your success just as much as you do, and is level-headed. His class can seem difficult but if you put in the effort and do what is required then it won't be too bad. He's an ideal overall choice for an English professor (in my opinion).
Mr. Burford made the daunting ENG 112 so great. I enjoyed every part of it. Granted, there is a lot of work in this class, but it all helps you learn how to write better. I think he has made this class the first where I feel like I learned something super useful for my life and career. He is funny, caring, and loves what he teaches.
Doesnt give clear explanation when he gives you a bad grade and then when you ask about it he gives half answers and makes you feel stupid. He gives SO MUCH homework and uses MLA really weirdly. His grading criteria seems clear but then when you get a grade back its completely off and it makes you question everything. TONS of pointless busywork.
I have never had a professor make it so clear to what he wanted in assignments. For each paper there is an assignment sheet, a rubric, several samples, and a checklist. If I ever had any questions he would get back to me extremely quickly (sometimes in minutes). ENG 111 online was not an easy class but he made it easy to succeed.
This was my first online class and thank god I had Mr. B, he explains all assignments clearly enough, gives plenty of time for projects/essays, and is a fair grader that gives good feedback.
he is very helpful and will try his best, but sometimes there is only so much a professor can do. there were several classmates who would complain together on how much work he assigns and little time to do it. i only had a few credits and i was still struggling to keep up. if you have a job or our a full time student. i do not recommend.
He was very rude I submitted a huge project and without giving it a change told me to drop the class. He also gave me a 0 saying I plagirized when I didnt.
Excellent professor! With COVID sending everything online, I still felt like he cared about how I was doing in the class. Weekly emails let me keep up with the course and he would respond to my emails sometimes within minutes. A lot of work but I felt like I learned a lot.
Mr. B is a great teacher! You will do a lot of reading and a ton of writing! However, he gives great feedback on all of the roughdrafts and is quick to respond to emails and questions outside of class hours, so you really have the best chance on whatever you do turn in. He also sprinkled in a ton of humor throughout his lectures.
Great professor! There was alot of work to do but all of it was interesting and it helped me write the papers. He provides a lot of examples and his rubrics were really clear. One of the few classes where I feel like I learned something useful.
I took Prof. B for ENG 111 summer 2020 and love him! It's intense because you do a 16-week workload in 8 weeks, but Prof. B sets up the homework like checkpoints to keep you on track for big assignments. He's organized and responds quickly. He truly wants his students to succeed and allows you to work ahead. I would take 112 with him too if I could
The most understanding teacher I have ever had. I was failing his class and was almost kicked out for lack of attendance. He reached out and got me in contact with the ILC. I then worked hard to eventually get a B in his class at the end. He answered every email quickly and cared about how I was doing.
It is obvious that Professor Burford is passionate about what he teaches, and cares about his students. However, the amount of time his assignments take should make the class count as 4 credits. I would not recommend taking his class unless you are taking a super small course load. Drop his class if youre not!!
Hard class but worth it. The reading is huge but he sets up reading groups to make it seem like discssing work in person. Pick good partners! He also includes sample papers and topics that make the papers easier to understand. He seemed to care about my ideas and he was always fair in his feedback. Glad I took it.
Professor Burford is a very passionate and hard-working teacher. He provides clear and informative instructions in the weekly assignments, allots plenty of time to complete assignments that are worth exam grades, and provides helpful feedback. You have to work hard, but this is college, if you were expecting anything less you are in the wrong place
Prof B is amazing. He helped me want to become a better writer. He showed me l can be a good writer, and he wanted every student to succeed, and gave so many resources, so nobody had an excuse. Was it hard? Absolutely. But college is hard, and if you want a good grade, you really have to work hard to get it in this class. Please take Burford!
-Professor B is hands down the best English teacher I've had. He really cares about teaching and he makes the class genuinely fun. There is a ton of reading, no way around it, but he works with you and actually makes it interesting.
Prof. B is absolutely dynamite! if you take an ENG 111 course, please, if you can, take with Burford. The class is FAR from easy, but he is caring, respond quickly to emails, and gives awesome feedback! Best of all, he's passionate. This course has helped me appreciate another part of the educational world. Thank you Prof. B!
Signed up for in person, only ever had like two classes the whole semester and not even any virtual classes. Talked to the head of the English Department and found out this professor told her he was doing classes which was a lie. 10/10 would recommend dropping this course; I know I will. (Wake Tech Southern Campus)
I am a good student who enjoys reading, but this class kicked my butt. The reading is dense, the assignment load is really heavy each week, and Professor B is a really tough grader who does not give ample feedback unless directly contacted via email. I personally feel like this class was wayyyy too hard for a 3 credit community college course.
Good class. WTCC went to a cohort model near the start, which messed up everyones schedule. Prof. B did what he could to make it work. Work was online and in-class because of COVID. I attended every class I could and learned alot. The papers were easy to write because we were given 4-5 weeks to work on them. Emails replies were quicker than most
I almost dropped this course because of the reading, but I am so glad I did not. Prof. B is funny and answered every question I had quickly. There are reading groups assigned at the beginning thatake the weekly reading like 15-20 pages a week. Papers are your choice and his comments are helpful. Good class!
I liked him. He was one of the few professors that seemed to care about my safety during the pandemic. Made everyone wear masks and followed social distancing. He was flexible with attendance when we were I'll or didn't feel safe coming to class. Assignments took a lot of work but we're interesting.
A lot of work but it's worth the effort. I worked with a group and had the reading down to like 15-35 pages a week. The papers were interesting (the topic is completely up to you) and the folders were full of videos and interesting discussion questions. I read and wrote a ton, but I expected that from a literature class. Crazy fast email replies.
READ THIS I took this class fully online. This class is HARD. Do not attempt to take this class with Burford for an easy A. The structure is two major writing assignments that are about 10 pages each (including work cited) with clear critia. There are two other exams that include HARD grammar and a presentation. Great Professor but HARD
Professor Burford is a great guy. He is enthusiastic about his area of expertise, and is very helpful for those who need it. He gives good feedback, and responds very quickly. His class is very reading/writing intensive. Would not recommend if working full time while taking other classes. However, if up for the challenge, I highly recommend Prof B!
(Taken Online) Amazing teacher who always wants to help. Few real assignments of serious difficulty, mostly the few essays due during the semester. Not super forgiving on grading but gives good advice and will sometime proofread so you do well. Easy class if you put in the effort!
Good teacher. The class was not necessarily easy but Professor Burford was organized, thorough with explanations, and clearly passionate about his work. He is not like most teachers. It was an online course that actually felt like it was in person with how good the instruction was. Would recommend this Professor every day of the week.
Best professor I have ever had. Extremely understanding! I will be trying to take every class he offers! Id recommend him if you want a challenge along with praise for trying your best. Every week I looked forward to seeing what was expected of me.
Literally the best english teacher. Class was honestly super slight and not a heavy workload what so ever. He is super flexible and always responds to my emails super fast. Normally the class was a bunch of discussion boards and 3 essays. Super easy and laid back. I LOVE THIS CLASS.
Professor B was absolutely fantastic! I had struggled in another English class that made me take a break from school for a bit. His class is mainly discussion boards and small assnmnts, with 3 major papers & revising one of those papers for your final instead of a test. The grading was laid out, and if you put in the work you'd get a good grade.
Prof. B was a great English teacher and gave great feedback. However, this class is VERY difficult. There are weekly discussion boards that count toward your attendance, 3 tests, and 3 major essays. The discussion boards and the tests are not bad, but the major essays are a PAIN. Use the REAL/VREAL center if you want to get an A in this class.
I wonder how he received this good rating. This class feels like 6 credit hours class. Lot of readings and lots of homework in very short period of time. His online teaching is very confusing and poorly managed. You learn less and stress more in his class. Discussion boards are long writing; you will feel like you are writing an essay every time.
Good class. Some weeks require a lot of reading, but the assignments were interesting and Prof. B was one of the fastest responding professors Ive had at Wake Tech. I was never confused on what I had to do in the class as he gives detailed announcements each week, practice activities, and samples for all papers. I worked hard but it felt worth it.
I learned a lot from Professor Burford, and everything I did in class paid off. I didn't get the grade I wanted, but it was just because it was my first semester in college. Overall, I thought this was a terrific course to take, and I'd definitely do it again with Professor Burford!
Had him for Fall 2022 semester. He was really helpful with feedback despite being an online class! It can be easy to fall behind if you don't keep up with your work, so just don't procrastinate and you'll be fine.
I took this class online when he was overloaded with students and yet he still managed to get personal feedback to students as much as possible. There were 4 units, with 2 essays and then the final, all of which had a fair amount of room for student creativity. He was also super accessible for questions of technical issues.
Was in his ENG112 course this spring semester and it has been the most enjoyable English course I've taken through both college and high school! The topics covered are easy to understand and given in enough time for you to grasp the material really well. He gives you plenty of time to plan and write the major essays and the ILC helps too! Take him!
If you are planning to take ENG112, definitely take professor Burford's course! He provides awesome materials and is very very understanding in every way; IYKYK. His assignments are all very reasonable with more than clear grading scales, he also grades things at a reasonable speed comparing to others in the department. Good sense of humor indeed.
I can't put into words how amazing he is. Professor Burford is so engaging online. His personality and attitude is excellent! Stop reading my review already and just choose him, you won't regret it! :)
Don't worry abt being a perfect writer. As long as u *follow the rubric* & make a genuine effort 2 visibly improve ur writing throughout the course, he will notice that & give u a great grade. He genuinely cares abt improving ur writing. Put effort in the discussion boards, submit all ur assignments on time. He's also very caring outside of class.
Some people give English instructors bad ratings because they hate writing, but even though Professor Burford was a tough grader and took his time at doing it, he is a good instructor. When he took so long to grade our papers that we were already submitting the next paper, he gave us extra credit to make up for the grading delay.
I enjoyed Prof. B's class. One of the hardest working teachers I have had. He answered my emails quickly and took the time to give me feedback on discussion boards and papers. He says Wake Tech gives him over 100 students each semester, which is kind of dumb. I dont know how he makes the class so interesting iwth that many students but I liked it.
Prof B was really great, he wasn't biased although he did like me. For my section there were 2 essays which were about 5 pages each but not too hard because they're based on the readings and you don't really need any outside sources. The midterm and the final are kinda hard because they're timed and they have an essay portion. The essays are easy.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I do not have enough characters to tell you how awful it is. Brandon states that his coursework is too much for a single student and that he highly suggests you partake in a reading group. He gives way too much work for his credit hour allowance and he gets so behind on grading from his over-assigning that you get no feedback.
Prof B's ENG-231 can be a handful. I have spent so much time on the ENG-231 textbook it is not even funny. If you are taking this course, take it as a full-time student. Prof B is a nice person himself, but the work given in this class exceeds the credit worth for a Community College English class. At the end of the day, nice person, hard class.
The reading is interesting but a lot. It kind of depends if you get a good reading group. My first group was lazy and never talked, but Prof. B switched me to a great group. You get two attempts for every reading quiz and they are pretty easy. I worked with my groups on them. Papers (2) also are not that bad with like a month to work on 1200 words.
VERY HELPFUL! He provided student examples for ANY assignment and explained assignment requirements in DETAIL. He did the same thing with the final exam and broke it down for students. Overall, he rated my papers well and provided amazing and descriptive feedback. The workload was fine for the result. Overall there is a reason he has high ratings!
BEWARE: if you don't get a get assigned an active group, this class feels like 6 credits. Unless you have a LIGHT schedule, the work will eat up your time. It's not calculus but it's 6-8hrs of reading per week (on 2x speed). First 4 weeks had 2 disc boards of 5-7sentences per question (usually 4-6 questions each)+ quiz. Nice teacher, awful course.
Professor Burford is great at responding to any emails, and giving feedback. There is a lot of reading, but you're put in a reading group, to make the load lighter. Definitely recommend to anyone who loves history!
Professor Burford was so enthusiastic about literature. I loved the way he challenged us to actually grasp the concepts we were learning. There is a lot of material mandated by the state that we have to read, and Professor Burford always provided multiple ways for us to learn each week.
Professor Burford is a great, but his ENG231 class is very challenging. It is very reading heavy and this class would take up more time than my 4 credit classes. He is caring and passionate about his subject, so if you love history this would be a great course.
Definitely recommend if you need to take ENG 111. This class will take up a lot of your time, but the work itself isn't too bad. This professor is very clear with assignments, gives many examples of what your work should look like, as well as feedback.
Overall a very good teacher. Explanations for assignments were always clear and he consistently gave multiple examples of how your work should look. Workload load wasnt bad as long as you keep up with it week by week, I only had a discussion board and 1 real assignment per week. Would definitely take one of his classes again.
HE RESPONDED TO EMAILS QUICKLY, IS A GREAT PROFESSOR, I TRULY LEARNED A LOT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS AN ONLINE CLASS. HAS LONG DISCUSSION POSTS ABOUT THE READINGS (YOU HAVE TO READ BC PART OF EVERY ENG231 CLASS), AND QUIZZES EVERY WEEK (NOT PROCTORED BUT MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAM ARE! 2 ESSAYS FOR THE SEMESTER AND HE CHECKS A LOT FOR AI (DONT USE AI !!)
Full of unnecessary busy work. Did not feel as though I learned anything because I was so overwhelmed going from one paper or response immediately to the next. Discussion posts are too long and pointless. Little to no feedback on papers regardless of grade received and he complains often that he has too much grading, despite being the one to assign
Definitely recommend.
