He seemed mean at first but turned out to be super nice.He makes you feel comfortable doing speeches and is a fair grader.I recommend him!
Brandon Gainer is an awesome teacher. I am not a fan of public speaking and didn't think i'd make it through the course. He is very supportive and fair and I now feel confident speaking in front of large groups. Because of Brandon, I am no longer fearful of public speaking and to be honest, actually enjoy it. Thanks Brandon...keep up the good w
Easy to understand. Fair grader. Keeps things interesting.
Very easy to talk to, understanding, but you have to try to do your part. Makes the class interactive and interesting. I hate public speaking, but he made it so even I enjoyed the class. I highly recommend him as a professor.
Brandon is an excellent teacher. I say this as someone who is actually going to school to LEARN something. If you are willing to do the work and improve on the points that he makes in your reviews, you will succeed. If you are lazy and want to be 'spoon fed', don't take his class. You will not be happy!
Had him for speech 1/public speaking. He is very clear on his topics. He seemed intimidating at first but he seems to be easy to get along with. And its important to show up to his class. You learn a lot. You cant be a lazy person in his class when it comes to giving speeches/doing your work. He will help you when you need it.
you don't need the (mandatory) textbook; he goes over all the materials in class. it looked like i was going to fail, but i got an A-. (o,O). it's hard, yet deceivingly easy.
On the 1st day of class Brandon seems intimidating. Don't let this scare you away. After day 1, he becomes friendly and helpful. The books are inexpensive and useful during class discussions. Attendance is expected. To get an A, you must put in time and practice. Follow the syllabus for deadlines. I improved in public speaking and writing outlines.
PERFECT. Very enjoyable class and prof.
Brandon took over for one of my other professors for speech class. He has a great character and is not too strict in grading as long as you meet the requirements like speech time etc. He keeps the class interesting and is honest.
this professor was really helpful and knows what he's doing. he's pretty down to earth and does seem strict at first, but he is helpful and wants his class to learn and do well. my first speech i was a nervous wreck but by the end of the quarter i felt confident and i'm taking more public speaking classes thanks to this class and professor
This professor is straightforward. You do the work, you put the time in, and you get the grade. He is very fair and clear about guidelines and homework. He gives you honest feedback and wants everyone to improve in their speaking. Highly recommend this professor for speech class. You will not be disappointed.
Everything is laid out for you; you just need to put some effort in to succeed. Brandon is VERY helpful and insightful. BTW he's also super hilarious and sarcastic. But he does mean business when it comes to important things. 3 important speeches and 3 "lighter" speeches.
very helpful class.Since I am a non-traditional second language student,I thought I would never succeed in speech classes. However,it turned out to be the most interesting class for me.Mr.Gainer is a great teacher! He has many creative ways to make you talk. You need to do your part and follow the syllabus. He is super hilarious and an amaising person.
Everything he wants is in the syllabus. He answers all questions and comes of more harsh than he really is. He has detailed instructions for everything. Easy A.
He's a great teacher and a speaker. Funny, sarcastic, and totally entertaining. Take his class and you won't regret it!
The best professor ever! Very helpful, encouraging, supportive, organized, just an excellent teacher. I already miss him and his speech class.
Brandon is such a great teacher. He explains all the assignments thoroughly and makes sure you know what it takes to earn an A. Take him you will not regret it! And when you read this Brandon...you're truly awesome haha
He is very funny and it is very interesting to listen his classes, but dont expect for a good grade......
Not an easy class unless you love and have some experience with speech presentations. Prof. funny extremely sarcastic super clear with assignments, engagements, outlines and presentations are your homework, his lectures are interactive and very helpful, please do not expect easy grades it's collage not a preschool:)
I took the hybrid speech class and honestly really like it. Prof. Is pretty much straight forward. Does not accept late. Do the homework and base your outline and speeches to the grading rubric and you will pass. I could have gotten an A but I didn't put much effort but I'm happy with a B. Brandon is a 1 of kind teacher I must sayBut very helpful!
I totally loved Mr. Gainer and Speech 1 . He is not an easy teacher because he really cares about his students. He made such a difficult class so understandable for me. I learned a lot from his interesting and informative classes. Looking forward for his speech 15 class. Thank you very much Mr. Gainer for everything you have done for your students.
Professor Gainer is very blunt and straightforward. He is not your typical instructor and is sarcastically hilarious. He genuinely cares about his students and will not babysit you. With that being said, if you're an adult and want to be treated like one then take his class, you will not regret it!
He is hilarious, but he takes his job too seriously. He could be a perfect teacher if he wasn't so strict about grades. It's not even a major class, but he wants you to put as much time as it is one. Don't take him if you care about your GPA. Otherwise - He is just the one
Gainer is a helpful instructor who gives meaningful feedback. His course design is such that even the most terrified public speakers could perform. He puts a ton of emphasis on class interaction which helps tremendously with nervousness. I loved his style and course setup (hybrid class). His sense of humor and overall sassiness is bonus. Take him!
I took his hybrid class and all I have to say is he's a really great speech professor! It's not an easy A but it's only because he wants the best from his students. Extremely helpful and super funny. As long as you put all your effort, you'll get an A or B.
He is a good teacher overall. There are a lot of assignments to turn in in his class, so don't miss any of them. He is easy if you remember to take care of everything he assigns. But because there are many details to the assignments he gives out, if you miss anything, points are docked off pretty easily.
Entertaining lecture. You will smile in this class. He is super clear. Follow his grading rubrics for speeches and outlines down to every last detail, and you will get an A. He has the grading rubric open on his laptop when he is watching your speech. Textbook required to be prepared for lecture (participation points), but reading is minimal. Yay.
I think he's an awesome teacher, but I wouldn't recommend him if you're easily intimidated by teachers or truly terrified of public speaking. He grades pretty harsh, but only because he gives you the grade you deserve if you screw up.
Goes off topic a lot, lectures are boring and unnecessary. There's a lot of group-work participation assignments, so be friends with your group! Online open book quizzes, very easy (only reason you need the book). Follow grading rubrics, he's pretty strict with that. *If no one participates in class discussion, he'll play Friday by Rebecca Black.
Brandon Gainer is a clear and sounding professor giving lectures with maximum clarity but the homework and assignments are all online and have no late posts. If you get to know him the class could be enjoyable and he likes to give talks about "Today's news" about anything. He'll make you work for your grades. Good luck.
He has a unique sense of humor, if you're one to be easily offended then this might not be the class for you. However, he means no harm in anything he says and if you take the time to approach him he's enjoyable to converse with. He is straight forward, and quite helpful. There will be lots of class interaction and working in groups.
Brandon is an AMAZING teacher! He is EXTREMELY sarcastic and you will LOVE his class! He gives you honest & helpful feedback. He helped me pick my major and he's very easy to talk to! I met my best friend and clique in this class, so talk to your peers! Plus, he's easy on the eyes! ;) So go to CLASS! P.S. I didn't even KNOW we HAD a textbook!
Lectures are too long but in my opinion speech shouldn't be required. He is very helpful when you need clarity and will sometimes ramble during lecture. Grading is pretty tough but just do the work and speeches and you'll be fine. Don't forget to add the grading rubric at the end of your outlines!!
Tries to be funny a lot(drysarcastic), fails more often than not. Talks about himself a lot(boring stories about how proud his folks are about his masters degree). Fair grader, clear-cut and helpful if you ask. OK all I'm all.
Tries a little too hard to be funny but mostly uses jokes and memes he found on Reddit which more often than not just ends up being more cringe worthy than funny. He takes himself a little too seriously and brags about things that are not quite impressive but to each his own. But other than that he seems like a good guy and is a decent teacher.
Here's one thing that I like about Gainer: he grades strictly based on the rubric. Follow the rubric regarding your speeches and you will ace them. Very entertaining class throughout the Summer and I am wholeheartedly glad I took his class.
I wanted to drop his class at first, because I find a one day class to be long and boring. I am glad I didn't. He is the best professor. I did bad on my last speech, but I know I wasn't prepared enough. His grading criteria is clear and he gives you what you deserve. This is my first time rating a professor. His class goes by fast. Take him!!!!!!!!
I think he's an awesome teacher! I really enjoyed his teaching style it's different and he puts things in perspective that make it easy to understand. My group was great although he grades you on an individual basis. So, if you pulled your weight then there was no problem. Just show up get up there and speak. you will get a good grade. Thanks!
Good class, good teacher. Having good group members makes a big difference. Class work is about 15% of the grade. Test was not hard about 12% of the grade. Group projects are 60% of the grade. Volunteer work requirement but made the class experience very fulfilling. I would recommend if you like sarcasm. learned to suck it up and just get it done.
Prof. Gainer is AWESOME. He has a bit of a sarcastic humor to him. Breaks everything down so that it becomes super clear. Grades paper with a rubric method that he gives to you and really gives good feedback to perfect your work. Couple of speeches but nothing too hard and one group project. No need for book because he explains to the T.
He is very sarcastic, but in a decent way along with a sense of humor. Quizzes are online, could take up to 3 times. Homework is usually watching a 10 min video on YouTube and writing your thoughts on it (Doesn't have to be too long). Has a very clear rubric. Just follow it, and you'll get an A.
Amazing teacher. Super clear with what he wants & always there if you have questions. Sarcastic but his humor made the already short lectures super easy to listen to. Yes what group you are in matters but they don't determine your grade. All group work is fairly simple, 1-2 solid ppl is all u need in your group. One of my favorite classes.
Brandon is a warm and caring professor. If you fail this easy class because you didn't come to school to participate and it will be your fault to miss out useful information in this class.
GAINER IS A GREAT GUY This isn't A Good Class because if you are in a bad group then this is a GUARANTEE FAIL. Make sure that you are in a group that works on the project ASAP because the Non-profit organizations' Volunteer Sports fill up Fast. Just make sure that you're group works on the project well.
GOOD GROUP Good Grade. BAD GROUP Bad Grade Make sure you have a presentable Power Point or Google Docs Presentation
It is an online class so it is very fast pace but keep up with the work. Gainer is an awesome guy, he really does care for his students and he wants the best for them. He always has funny jokes or awesome wisdom to give. But, if you suck at grammar, sentence structure, good luck with his class. EVERYTHING IS IN APA FORMAT.
Clear, helpful & organized. Very relaxing exercises and discussions graded by effort. Essays can be a bit challenging, but he has clear objectives, writing instructions, samples. You choose the topic & only have to read sources you find useful (so don't buy textbook). He also allows revisions. Talk to him as and you will get amazing idea s.
Took his class 4 years ago. He's super caring and really funny. He will change grades if he sees you put in effort and didn't make excuses. He was very understanding when I had to miss class for personal reasons. Only 6 assignments when I took the class. 3 mini speeches and 3 big speeches. Participation counts and there's in class group work.
Hes a really cool guy, and he doesn't grade too harshly either. He's a caring and understanding guy and wants you to succeed. If you show up every day and show you care, you'll probably get a really good grade.
Brandon is a teacher to love and respect. He is CARING. There are works need to be done in his class. Why are you coming to school if you don't want to do work? Brandon keeps up with popular issue and news. He made sure that can practice in class knowledge in reality too. Take his class and tell other to take his classes. You won't regret it.
Brandon is a swell guy! Online discussions and exercises are minimal yet tedious, but you receive full credit. As for the papers/essays., they make up the bulk of your grade. Just follow his guidelines exactly for each paper and you'll get a high score. You can pick the topic for each paper as well. He does give extra credit. An "A" is possible.
He's very sassy, but at the same time very caring. Essays: clear thesis and APA formatting important, allows re-writes for essay 2 & 3. HW is on Canvas, dont have to write much, always got full pts. 3 p easy online quizzes, 2 mcq, 1 f/r. Final essay graded leniently. Also, at the end of the quarter he allowed us to do any quizzes or HW we missed :)
Gainer is a really cool teacher whom I have a lot of respect for. He is more than fair with grading (gives 5% boost for everyone at end of semester, gives full credit for just turning in assignments) and most people enjoy the time they are in class. If you have the chance I would recommend you take him.
Gainer is a great professor, you actually experience the group conflict and communications theories he explains by completing a two part group project. I absolutely despised group projects before this class. I ended up receiving the highest percentage I've ever gotten in college. Fair warning: TAKE THE CLASSMATE INTERVIEW EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY!!
I have a lot of respect for Professor Gainer as he is very knowledgeable. However, the online COMM 1 class is relatively new. The Canvas page is very unorganized. The class itself was hard and time-consuming since there were a lot of quizzes based on specific quotes in the textbook. This was a very stressful class and I don't recommend it.
Brandon was a cool guy and he was very intelligent. However, his online COMM 1 class was very difficult as he assigned a lot of on-campus speeches to be done. Do not expect this online class to be fully online. Also, he has a strict rubric for speeches and takes off points for minor errors.
One of the worst teachers ever. If you take ONLINE COMM 1, don't expect it to be strictly online. He requires too much time to be out in the field for this to be an online class. If you're a single mom, dad, or not able to find the time to get out then DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. I just dropped it because of time conflicts and changing of due dates.
Terrible. The whole entire time I had no clue what was going on in class. He has was very strict and had a bad attitude. If you email a question he would question you and then say that he was confused as to you didn't know the question. Also, on tests and quizzes most of the material that was covered didn't seem to cover topics from classwork/HW
This class was by far the most interesting but also the worst thing I have ever been through simultaneously. The workload for this class is immense and if you are a normal adult who has a job or other adult life things you need to do, do not take this class. I agreed with his political views but ultimately this was a bad experience.
As a student coming back to school for the first time in a long while, I feel like I made a mistake taking his class because there was so much work! I work a full time job and i struggled to do all the things demanded in this class. Service learning took a lot of me and all the reading we had to do. He seems very knowledgeable but he was hard
Professor Gainer is an awesome teacher and really helpful if COMM is your major. There is a lot of writing for the class, but as long as you structure your essay around his rubric he becomes a pretty solid grader. There is also a couple speeches you have to give in class, but as long as you do it is a guaranteed A. Highly recommend for EWRT2.
Honestly, probably the hardest English class I have ever taken. Soo many papers, on top of multiple assignments. However, I am very grateful to have taken this class. It improved my writing immensely, and provided me with a lot of techniques for writing. NOT AN EASY A, but, definitely worth taking if you want to challenge yourself and to see change
This is not an easy A, but it also wasn't particularly hard. There is usually 1 homework assignment due every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday which I find to be a typical amount for any class online or not. Lots of opportunity for extra credit and he's really engaged in the class community. He's willing to work with you if you communicate with him.
Professor Gainer is a rare find. He Is down to earth and his dedication to his students excels beyond what Ive experienced in college thus far. I selected his online class because of the convenience it offered, but I have learned so much more about myself than I could have in a classroom. Hes inspired me to tackle fears I didnt even know I had.
Professor Gainer is a great teacher. I enjoyed this class so much. I normally HATE public speaking but this class somehow made it a lot easier. He taught us great techniques to use in the future. Although this class was online, I feel like was still very effective and definitely helped me learn how to better approach public speaking. Great class!
Professor Gainer was a very reasonable and great teacher! I really enjoyed his online COMM 1 class as I learned a lot not just from the class, but from him as a person as well. The speeches he assigned were EXTREMELY interesting and I had trouble trying to keep my speech below the time limit! I would take another one of his classes in a heartbeat!
I took his class for COMM9 and it was not easy. There are a total of 5 essays in which he allows us to re-write if you receive a low grade. Assignments are mostly preparations prior to writing your essays so you don't wait until last minutes to do everything. He is somewhat of a tough grader but takes his class if you actually want to be challenged
Fair grader & easy to get in touch with. 5 total essays; 3 of them can be revised for better grade. Hw every week is online discussions you respond to based on the material. Provides 24 hr period to complete work after it's due but with points taken off. Offers a good amount of extra credit & you can pass as long as you do & turn things in on time.
He doesnt really let you know what is due in canvas, thats for you to figure out yourself. He is a tough grader in group presentations.
Super long essays. A lot of reading and writing. Does not help much so find help elsewhere. strict on deadlines. You have to put in a lot of effort to do well. He is reasonable and can tell when you try hard enough. has extra credit. Super time consuming
If you actually care about what he is teaching then you are in for a very fun class. If you are taking the class for an easy grade, just drop, you're not going to like it. Brandon is very much there for people who reciprocate his efforts.
He has a dark sense of humor and if you can't handle it, this class is not for you. I personally thought he was hilarious. He seems like a hardass but he really just wants the best for his students. His method of teaching is different from other teachers, but its effective. Talks a LOT but it's usually beneficial. Your grade's based on your effort
Dont be thrown off by how upfront he is! Gainer is one of my favorite COMM teachers ever. His serious tone scared many at first, but when you slowly get to know him you realize he really cares for his students. He gives great advice and does not beat around the bush. Each class was interesting and never boring.
Pretty cool dude, no need to worry about the tough talk he gives at the start of the quarter. Took for an argumentation class, mostly essays and group-work, only one brief presentation. Cares about his students, likes to crack jokes.
Took this guy for my 2020 winter course and boy was it worth it! Hes very understanding and truly cares about his students. One of my favorite teachers in DeAnza. Work is manageable but its the essays you reall have to work hard for. Highly recommended if you want to be pushed. Hes a great teacher.
Professor Gainer is a great dude and a good teacher and he was one of my few teachers I actually liked as a person. Dude has a gamer chair. However it's HEAVY on essay writing and you do have to try, so if you struggle with writing you will probably be better by the end but you'll wanna die.
He grades wayyyy to hard
He is a passionate and caring individual that will definitely help you with your writing if you put in the effort. He gives you ample opportunity to improve your grade through good feedback and homework structured around your essays that set you up for success. One of those classes where I know I could have gotten an A with a little more effort.
As a leader and active duty Soldier, I understand the skill required to ensure the betterment of an entire organization. Brandon Gainer does this in a very casual way in the beginning then he incrementally raises the bar to help his students reach new heights. These concepts are gold. I reassure that he will treat you and your group like adults.
There are 2 main presentations in the quarter, weekly discussions about chapter materials from a textbook, commenting on classmates discussion's post. if you dedicate an hour or 2 a week it's manageable. Teacher is a good guy, genuinely tries to help you succeed. The class will help w/work, with friends and with life. Take it!
Honestly- best Comms professor I've had at De Anza. I took his group comms class and had a hard time with some group members, but he was super understanding and accommodating. Super appreciative of his care for students. He really respects you and will treat you like you matter, which is fantastic. Thanks Gainer!
Amazingly knowledgeable and hilarious professor with interesting and engaging lectures. His humor/style is refreshingly blunt and direct, yet he simultaneously shows a huge amount of care towards his students. Many essays and presentations (both group and individual)- make sure to work hard on these. Loved his class, would highly recommend!
If you want to take this class asynchronously and actually want to learn, take it in person or go with another teacher. The whole course is just modules you'll rarely open unless it's part of a discussion. Besides that, 3 assignments a week and 4 essays in total. I came out learning nothing :) Nonetheless, it is easy A if you put time into it.
He's a bit of a tough grader, but his class is very worth it. I love his sense of humor and he also just cares about his students.
Great lectures. Slightly tough grader on essays. 5 total essays. Funny guy.
Class is a lot of work & it's not clear besides on the syllabus what you should be reading from textbook. Assignments are given to pace out the essays but it is still a grind with quarter system speed. Overall a reasonable class, but it is a lot of work. there is an option to work as a group for the final project. no late assignments accepted.
VERY VERY harsh grader, beware if you value your sanity and mental health. He will have you doing so much damn homework and writing you won't even be able to rest. He looks at every little detail, so don't even bother trying to use AI or any type of shortcut. Honestly, if he were a little more lenient with the grading it would make it alot easier.
i love professor gainer. hes quick to email back on weekdays, hes witty, and he genuinely made me feel motivated to try in school again. hes not strict but u do need to follow the criteria he lists in the essays, and he does allow revisions so you can get a better grade! he also accepts late work. u NEED to take this professor!
Honestly, I wouldn't take him. I only took this class to fulfill a GE, so I didn't care what I learned in this class, but he just does too much and isn't very lenient. He's going to knock 50% off late work, even if it's a minute late, and give us so many essays. We have 4, but I'm not a fan of essays, LOL. Find an easy and better prof tbh
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVERRRR!!!!!! I don't know how to explain this, but do NOT take this professor. He is HORRIBLE. Tough grader, not funny at all, and not helpful. Take another professor or don't take the class at all. I beg you do not take this professor, and you will thank me later.
Cool guy. Enjoyed his class and assignments (lots of essays). Strict grader, but gives good feedback. Slacking off on class work is something I would avoid with him as your professor. This class helped me with my time management, writing and reading skills. Hoping to take another one of his classes soon.
He is an amazing prof and will teach you so much. It is a tough class but worth taking. I think he is just a little misunderstood by students because he is very blunt but he is a really funny guy and really does care a lot about his students. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!
The class is hard, but Mr. Gainer will teach you a lot. This is more of an English class than it is public speaking. 90% of the time you're composing essays, the other 10% you're speaking, and he is a tough grader. His sarcasm may rub you off the wrong way, but you'll get used to it, and he really cares for his students. You'll work for your A.
Listen, for a community college professer, sure his class is hard. For a general four year level class, he is just the standard level of difficulty. Everyone at De Anza wants an easy A. Well, he is gonna make u work for it. If ur a comm major, his classes are a must to learn the ropes. If ur lazy, you will fail. If u wanna learn, hes ur guy.
Nitpicky. Beware of professors who preemptively assign essay revisions. They really want to be taken seriously, so they pretend to have a hard class. I produce high-quality work. However, handing out Ds and Cs for essays (50% of the grade) to justify yourself is not ok. He is not "tough but fair." Stop trying to sound unique. Don't act brainwashed.
People don't like him because they want an easy A and are lazy.. This class is meant to teach you and it is HARD. This is what normal college level courses are like so get used to it. He is the best and wants u to actually improve your writing. If you get a good grade in this class its because you worked very hard and learned a lot. No free A's.
Really clear about criteria, so you know exactly what to do for assignments. I was originally nervous about having to take a public speaking class, but one of the first weeks discusses speech anxiety which I think helped me a lot. The professor is also funny and socially aware, I think his sarcasm helped break the ice in class really well.
