Cool teacher. Easy A.
boring lectures but usually very short. never leave any blanks on tests!! he gives sooo much partial credit!!
One of the greatest and nicest teachers in COC. He teaches the material very clearly, tries to make the subject easier than it is, and is always there to help. He lectures for about an hour and lets u to do hw and ask questions for the time remaining. If u pick this teacher, i guarantee u will not drop because there isn't an easier teacher around.
Nice guy, ok teacher, lots of time to do homework in class. Doesn't seem all that interested in the subject, but explains it well enough to make it easy. Lots of partial credit- fill in something for every question.
Easy, easy, easy! Great teacher. First, Geometry seemed like a chore to sit through but it is one of the nicest subjects ever. Mr. Hilst is so cool and makes it all so easy. Enough said.
Not a whole lot of personality and the class is a snoze-fest and tends to drag on but it is pretty easy. Just take the notes and be there for the review session and you should do just fine.
I honestly don't know what everyone is talking about. For my class, he didn't always seem like he knew what he was talking about; or seemed like we understood everything automatically; he copied all of his notes out of the book and didn't give any hints into helping the students.
Very good teacher. If you're willing to put in the effort, he will help you out a lot. Not too much homework. Review sessions before every test. He will not test you on something he hasn't covered. His class isn't too entertaining, but he covers everything in a decent amount of time. I would recommend him.
Calculus with Professor Hilst was OK. He seems like a very soft spoken guy who does not have much to say, however he is not very helpful so I would not recommend him very highly. Of course who could make calculus all that much fun anyways!
Professor Hilst is very good. He explains the concepts very well and makes them easy to understand.
Good teacher. Seems a bit unsure of himself during lectures, but explains things well, although my class had a lot of people who just couldn't understand it, so I got kind of bored. Tests weren't too bad, just make sure to do your homework, and you'll be fine.
Nice guy, good professor. Doesn't waste your time with uneccessary b.s. Test are challenging but straight forward. You know exactly what you will see before hand. Highly reccomended.
i dont know what everyone is talking about, this class was not all that easy. he doesnt really follow along with the book, if u get lost and try to clarify it in the book, you cant he's bouncing all over the section.his response to ur questions will be somewhere in the middle of a step. overall just hard to grasp.
his lectures make sense. but most of the times he doesnt lecture on whats on the book so when you do your hw you dont understand it. the chapter tests were moderate but if you dont understand the material you wont pass the test. the final exam was extremely hard. i got A's and B's on all the chapter test and i believe i failed the final.
Honestly he is a nice guy, but he doesn't know how to teach and he doesn't know anything about Calculus. Five or six times during the semester we asked him for help on homework problems he assigned and he wouldn't even know how to solve them. Whatever I got an A so I guess he wasn't toooo bad at teaching.
Extremely fair. There are never any surprises on the tests, and he reviews thoroughly the day before. Math is not too easy for me but I had no problems. Both of my sisters failed this class twice each, having different teachers. I passed my first time with Hilst.
I totally recommend Brandon Hilst. I have taken 3 math classes and his was the smoothest.
VERY organized, very clear and methodical explanations. Sizable amount of work for the class (but it is a math class after all). I personally had a difficult time with the way he explained things--for some reason it just didn't work for me, but I think I'm a rare case. For most people he'd be a great option I believe.
I took hilst last summer hadn't looked at an algebra problem in 12 yrs. He explained everything step by step and was more than willing to go over it again. Real easy to absorb the info. Really recommend!!!
Hilst is a decent teacher. Will help, but does expect you to know a lot of stuff. Teaches at a medium pace. Tests are just like homework. Extra credit often. Major downside: Personality. He NEVER said a non-math word the entire semester. Doesn't engage in casual conversation. Almost timid. His math jokes are absolutely horrible. Overall, easy A.
Very straightforward teacher. You are going to go to class, Go over the material, ask questions, go home. You will hardly ever get out early. Hilst is a good teacher, the class just isn't fun time. Unless, you really like calc 2. Must study and practice a lot!
Hilst is by far one of the best math teachers I have ever had, he explains the chapters thoroughly and completely. There were weekly homework checks and he gives a good amount of partial credit on tests. It is rare that math teachers ever get high ratings... however Hilst has one... take him!
For Calc he is really not a good teacher, he wrote informaion on the board way too fast and his tests were incredibly difficult.
I took this class over the summer and I had to drop. His tests were very difficult and you get homework points only from quizzes. You do not get points from completion so if you happen to get the 3 or 4 questions on the quiz wrong, you wasted your time doing a ton of homework that whole week.
Honestly, one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I didn't learn like anything in his class and his tests were near impossible. Math is my strong subject and this class was crazy hard. He acts like this is your only class. I would definitely not recommend him.
do not take him unless math is your strong subject! His test are very hard! I'd do all the problems in the book right and still did bad on the tests. He checks hw through random hw quizzes which I didn't like cause if you missed a day you loose 10pts points & you'd loose points if you got the one problem he chose to be on the quiz wrong.
He does not collect the chapter's homework until the day of the test. If you do apply yourself and do your homework assignments on time as well as the test review section, then you should receive an A or a high B in the class. He grades fairly and does give partial credit on test problems. Pay attention in class especially if your in his 2 hr class
For College Algebra: Professor Hilst is by far the worst professor I have ever had. I go to a 4-year university and was looking to get a math course out of the way, but Hilst made that impossible. He teaches as if everything is a review..so basically he does no teach. Avoid if possible.
His classes aren't easy, so if you're looking for an easy A, he is not the teacher. The one thing from prior posts that I would agree with is that he moves quickly through lecture. He is very helpful, and is more than willing to help you. Like any normal college professor he expects you to show up, do the work/study, and put forth your best effort.
BY FAR the WORST~Doesn’t understand Calc 2~Made too many errors.”Taught” by reviewing, NOT teaching~Near impossible tests~Tried MUCH harder than usual, yet didn’t pass (reflecting HIS failure to teach)~BEFORE Hilst, I got A+ in Calc 1 w/ diff. prof. AFTER Hilst I got ALL A+ in Calc 2 (repeated w/ diff. prof who KNEW how to teach). NEEDS RETRAINING!
His tests are fair. Do the study guides. The class is boring and you might be tempted to doze off in class. The precalc book is terrible so take notes on his lectures. He grades meticulously. Homework quizzes are the day after the test. It's very easy to fall asleep during his class. However, he explains things well and is very helpful.
Fantastic teacher! He is very helpful, clear, and always does a review the class before the exam. I recommend him for any math class.
This class was extremely difficult! Professor Hilst is a tough grader which doesn't help the fact that this is already a difficult course. Struggled throughout the entire semester in this class.
Hilst was great! Although this subject was super hard and the most difficult math class that I've ever taken, Hilst is definitely the best teacher for it. He's always willing to help you and go over problems! He is a fair grader and tests are manageable. They come straight from homework and review problems, so there are no surprises! Take him!
Great Math Teacher! Best at COC! Very helpful and funny! He also grades tests very easy. If you make a small mistake, he won't mark the entire question wrong. He will give partial credit. Take him!
I cannot stress how important it is not to take a class with this professor. He is so arrogant that he makes it impossible for students to ask questions without being humiliated. Constantly tested on material we did not cover in class or in the homework. Homework is not collected, you are quizzed on a random selection of problems.
Worst math teacher I've ever had. You can't ask any questions without him making a stupid remark. He's the type of professor that shows up for a check and not because he acutally cares about his students. You will be forced to teach yourself about everything. You have been warned
Class was ridiculous. Gave very basic notes and homework problems, then tested on concepts we never learned or went over. He is very boring and doesn't have much to say. Asking questions is worthless.
Horrible professor. Everyone in my class struggled, but the professor refused to acknowledge that it MIGHT be his fault. I don't know why he has so many positive reviews. Huge discrepancy between what is taught in class/practiced in the homework, and what is tested on. Got a D in the class, when I passed the same class in h.s. with an A.
pretty cool guy, doesnt afraid of anything
Hilst is brilliant with mathematics, however despite his willingness to help, I found him condescending and dry. Tests are straightforward and worth 10% of grade each, having 20-30 questions + one extra credit problem. He grades promptly and gives partial credit, however it's very difficult to get an A as the final is worth a KILLER 30% of grade.
Absolutely useless. Lectures were extremely basic and boring, assigned only the very basic comments for homework, though the tests covered everything. Was very hard to talk to for additional help, and would be extremely condescending when you asked questions in class. Do not take him for any higher level math class as you won't understand anything.
Had him last semester. Hilst does the bare minimum for his students, and quite frankly has no interest in student success. He is arrogant and unhelpful. His "review" is worthless and hardly relevant to what you're tested on. Notes and HW do not give understanding of the material that you are tested on. Be warned.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. His teaching technique is awful. The tests he gives are completely off topic of what he teaches in class. He is the reason my GPA is not longer a 4.0. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
He's a nice and approachable guy. Gives a reasonable amount of homework which is checked through homework quizzes. Lectures quickly(hard to keep up) so make sure to go over notes after class. The tests are difficult. There are six exams(60% total), a final(30%),homework quizzes(5%), and in class group work(5%). Do the hw, and read the textbook!
His class came off pretty easy to me. A good amount of homework, but nothing too difficult. The test questions are based off homework questions so if you do and understand the homework, you should be fine on the test. Final is cumulative, but isn't too hard.
He gets mad when you ask a question, and he wont help you. I did everything to pass his class but still received a D, please be prepared to suffer, I took his class twice and he didn't care and still didn't pass me.
Overall, a very fair teacher. By no means is he easy, but he actually taught the material. Can be somewhat condescending when questions are asked during lectures, but he still answers regardless. Studied using the provided review questions and homework questions and got an A. If you do take him, do the homework and come to class. Definitely helps.
Really nice, really clear teacher. Use his reviews and show up to class and you're good.
Overall, great professor. Willing to help studenets that show a want to do better. Tests were fair as long as you did the HW and attended class.
2nd class with Hilst. Took him previously for 212. Hilst's teaching style is not for everyone. His lectures are fast, so if you're not paying attention, you'll miss it, and he's not likely to repeat it. Lots of examples, study your notes. Takes HW questions at the beg of each class. Tests are graded with partial credit. HW does count, so keep up.
He is amazing teacher and he is the best teacher i have met. He tries to help students and if you have a question, go his office and ask him. He is not friendly, but very clear and good teacher. If you do your homework and do not miss class, you will be good. You have to study and exam is base off study guide and homework. Take him!!!!!
Lectures are clear and explains concepts well. This class requires a lot of out of class studying. Do the homework and you should be ready for the test. He will test you on difficult math problems so study well. I learned so much from this class! It was one of my favorite math classes! Definitely recommend professor Hilst!
He is very detail oriented and I love how he teaches so simply. I took this class a few time before and couldn't grasp the concepts until he taught me. I would suggest him if you struggle to grasp math concepts. He breaks it down as far as it can be broken down.
Best professor I've had for math. Others maybe friendlier, but he knows how to explain concepts in a way that makes the audience understand WHY you do something not just memorizing HOW to do something. Also was very reasonable with allowing me to reschedule tests when my personal life became chaotic. Class examples show up on tests more than HW.
Easy to follow and understand, he also explains the material well. His tests are straight forward. If you did the homework you should do fine on the tests, since the homework is generally harder than the tests.
He is amazing professor. He is not friendly but he is very helpful and kind. Some students said that his class is the reason not to maintain 4.0 GPA. It's not an excuse :P I am also 4.0 students and I am not good at math but if you visit office hour and do the homework, you will be find.
This professor is the most comprehensible math teacher iv had, moreover his test are much more simple than the homework assigned, straight forward, with absolutely no surprises. Respected and appreciated by all the students the class i took.
Mr. Hilst is a nice man. He makes learning easy if you put in the effort. He gives study guides for each exam and the questions come from the textbook. Homework is not at all necessary because he doesn't grade it, and if you just study the study guide you are solid.
Prof. Hilst is an amazing professor, very organized and explains the material very clear. He is not there to be your friend so I can see why some would say he's not friendly. I thought I was bad at math until I took Hilst. Doesn't make it harder than it needs to be, unlike some professors. Straight forward test. Optional h.w.
Professor Hilst gives clear lectures, provides examples similar to what can be expected on exams, and even tosses in a bit of on-point humor now and then. Homework is gone over at start of each class, and will provide extra help if needed. Attend class, do the homework, and you can ace this class even if you've not taken a math course in years.
If you're looking for a fair calculus professor who is coherent on what you need to know and is willing to help you understand the material, Hilst is your guy. The test are more difficult than most other classes you will take as it is calculus, but if you study hard you should get an A. Also, the final exam grade replaces your worst test grade.
His lectures are awesome he teaches you step by step till everyone understood the process. He's a fair grader and probably the best math teacher I've ever had in college of the canyons.
Professor Hilst is an amazing math teacher who really knows how to teach Mathematics. In Math 104, there was never one time where I did not understand the material because of his teaching. There are five exams and homework quizzes. He gives you a cumulative final that he heavily prepares you on! He will make Math at COC super enjoyable.
Professor Hilst is socially awkward. He is kinda rude to people who asks questions in class. His hw is way different than the tests so I recommend to spend less time on the homework and more on the notes. He is definitely not the best professor, but not the worst. I would take him again as a last resort.
He's crystal clear. It's obvious class attendance is mandatory because IT'S MATH. It's a lot of material gone over in one class meeting. He's patient but sometimes he can be a little rude. One thing that I loved is he explains step-by-step and gives a variety of examples. Homework is optional, but it truly helps for HW quizzes and exams!
Professor Hilst is a great teacher that is willing to answer student's questions. Every class, he starts off by asking if there is questions from the homework. There is a lot of homework, but that is typical of any math class. His lectures are great and can be understood. If you do the homework and study class notes, you should pass the class.
He's a great professor! Things can get tricky as you go further into the semester so I advise you to show up. He doesn't let you use a calculator until maybe halfway into the semester for exams. However, he makes it easier. He has clear lectures. At the beginning of every class he reviews any homework questions. There will be homework quizzes.
Prof. Hilst is probably the worst professor you can take math with. He will not pass you even if you are .1 away from the next letter grade. He is not approachable, gets mad if you ask questions and places test emphasis on things he rarely covers. Spends a large time covering material that is not on tests and does not tell students about it. AVOID.
Honestly, Hilst was a pretty decent professor but I just couldn't grasp his concepts. I didn't really like his teaching style and I struggled in his class from the start. If you take his class, make sure you're ready to work.
LOVE HILST!! Best professor/teacher I've ever had! Breaks everything down in a way where his students can understand and he really wants his students to pass. He makes lame jokes alot, but who cares? Lots of HW, but its not bad. Tests are easy and quizzes are open note. He's great honestly.
Hilst is a great teacher and is there to teach what you need to know. His class was simple and before every test he does review problems that are pretty much the same as the ones on the test. Quizzes are on test day and open note based on the recommended HW. Keep up with lectures and you will pass.
Hilst is an amazing teacher. He taught the concepts of Calculus very well. I understood his lecture completely. There is a lot of homework but if you work hard you will get an A. He helps you a lot if you ask him a question after class. His tests are medium difficulty, but if you understand the homework completely the test is easy.
Hilst is a great teacher and explains everything very well. However, I agree with earlier comments; he seems to get a bit annoyed when students ask certain questions. Do the hw (downloadable book was free) & utilize the study guides he provides because they are very similar to what is on the test. He doesn't allow calculators so check your work.
Professor Hilst is great guy; he is caring and funny. Attendance mandatory like with every math class. There is homework but not a lot and he doesn't grade it.(doing homework helps with homework quizzes) Always does exam review, he puts on exam only what he explained and the exam problems are very similar to exam reviews. Wish he teaches Math 240
Professor Hilst is a great math professor. He has a very clear grading criteria and is very caring. His test are easy if you do the study guide that is given to you. Very easy to understand and goes over homework and all test exams that was given. You will have group work and homework quizzes. Lastly, he drops your lowest test grade during Finals!
Prof. Hilst is by far the greatest math teacher I've ever had. He goes over the homework and his teaching style is really easy to follow. He's funny at times and very nice, doesn't sound condescending at all when answering questions people are afraid to ask about. His study guides for the exams are very good, just pay attention and you will be good
I took a 3 hour class with Brandon for two days a week. It was definitely a LOT of material. If you had a question, he was good to make you understand. He was not very lenient on tests so you really needed to KNOW your stuff. Notes were good & helpful, I'm just really bad at math. I'd re-take this class with him though; pretty simple class.
Amazing professor, very clear and easy to understand in lectures. Don't be scared to ask questions, he's very caring about his students. Not lenient on tests, KNOW YOUR MATERIAL.
I am not a brilliant person but if you go into the class understanding the pre-req material, there is zero excuse to not get an A. Tests are very straight forward, questions are on problems exactly like the ones tells you to review. HW is turned in for a small grade, group class work. I recommend him to anyone taking math classes.
Honestly Hilst really takes the stress out of Calc. His office hours are extremely helpful and if you can't make them he's still willing to meet with you. He also has some extra credit opportunities. His lectures are pretty easy to follow. Tests are medium difficulty, the final is tad bit more difficult. You can tell he loves what he does.
Great professor and probably the first math teacher I have actually enjoyed. He doesn't try to overcomplicate things and won't throw curve balls. He gives strong lectures and is great at explaining concepts. All of his notes are available online and there are opportunities for extra credit. Would take again.
The great thing about his lecture notes is that they are accessible online after class. HW is graded as a quiz (open note) on test days before the actual test. There aren't many questions on each test so you should make sure you know the material. Prof Hilst's class was easy to follow and straightforward. He was great!
He was a good choice. His class is challenging, but it's also student friendly. The homework is not that bad, like some say it is. You can pass, but you must work for it. Take advantage of study groups and the tutoring center. He responds to emails almost immediately. He'll even help you find study groups if you ask.
Five exams + the final make up 90% of your grade (5% HW, 5% class work). He is extremely clear for what he's looking for on the test. The tests are very straightforward and not meant to trick you. He explains concepts perfectly and posts all his lectures online. Not the most charismatic, but my favorite math teacher so far. Recommend him 100% !!!!
Slaps down a formula , and shows how to use it, without much explanation of how it works or how to get to the formula, or what the variables mean. Tests are fair, but questions aren't too similar to the HW. Tries to help outside of class. He's a genuinely nice guy and will try to work with you, but he falls a little short on teaching Calc 2.
He's a nice person, but can't teach. Collects HW on the day of test. Expects you to know a lot of things from his Calc 1 class, even if you took it with someone else. Don't ask him questions in class because he's extremely condescending, and won't properly answer. Tests are barely like the homework. 5 tests + 1 final. Final replaces lowest test.
Great professor! Prof Hilst explains things in a simple way and is available after class most of the time. As long as you do the homework, you should be just fine. He uses a Microsoft Surface and projects the screen so everyone can see. Some may prefer the teacher to just write on the white board, but I thought the Microsoft Surface was just fine.
Hilst is by far the best math teacher I've ever had. Took trig over summer with him and I wish he was my precalc teacher now. He explains everything so well and gives great examples. The study guides were problems from the book and the tests were very similar. Do the homework and you should get an A.
I took both Math 211 and 212 with professor Hilst. He was easily one of my favorite mathematics teachers and probably one of the best teachers at College of the Canyons. He is very well organized which makes it much easier for his students to be organized as well. I can easily recommend Hilst to anyone.
Took this class over summer and definitely recommend him. Very organized and keeps you on task.
Hands down the best math teacher at COC. I've also had him for precalc and received an A in that as well. He is more about making sure you understand the concept than making you arbitrarily crunch numbers. In class he does lots of worked examples and is very clear about what to expect on exams. Planning to take him for Calc 2 in the Spring.
Brandon is an amazing teacher! I really appreciated his clarity in teaching a difficult subject. He cares about your students and gets to know your name within the first two weeks. Tests count for a large portion of your grade (70%), but he gives problems that you have definitely seen in homework. Best math teacher I have had.
Please take this teacher. He is by far the best Math teacher I've had in my whole schooling career. He doesn't talk about his life or tell awful jokes, he just teaches the material. He's honestly amazing, and he should be cloned and become the end all math teacher for everyone.
One of the best professors at COC. Teaches you exactly what is going to be one the test. Test are straightforward and easy if you study notes. No tricks, do the work and you will pass the class. Homework is due on the day of each test and checks for completion.
By far the best math teacher I've ever had. He mad learning math fun! Highly recommend.
This is the best teacher I have ever had. He explains difficult maths concepts so well it become easy. I would advice anybody to take him for sure ... awesome teacher !!!!
Great professor. Wish I could take him for my next class :/ He explains concepts clearly and has well structured lectures. Don't miss class, take good notes, and do the homework and you will do fine.
Prof Hilst is hands down the BEST math teacher at COC. HW is due the day of the test & his review problems are from the HW. He spends an hour before class reviewing these problems before the test. Tests are extremely similar to the review & to his lectures. He doesn't throw any trick questions on the test. If you want a good grade take his class!!!
Best professor ever!!!!!!!!!!!!. He makes maths so easy. He is by far the most organized teacher ever. He explains the course material so well you will begin to love maths. Test and exam are similar to study guides and class notes. Put in the work and you get an A. I will for sure take him if I were you
Professor Hilst is the best math teacher ever! He teaches the material very clearly and gives lots of examples. Every class session he makes time for reviewing materials, which was extremely helpful. The test were fair and derived from the homework.
I took math102 for the first two weeks but dropped since didnt need it for my major. Ive alwayes struggled w/math but Hilst made trig material so easy to understand. Hes very organized and helpful if youve got any qt. Therere study guides for exam, DO all the problems, they are same of the exams. Take him!
Best math professor at COC! Professor Hilst is very organized when it comes to teaching, always arrives on time (which is important, tardiness can take away time from teaching and the students.) His lectures are always clear and concise. I definitely recommend !
Surprised how well I did in the class after not taking math for 5 years. Hilst breaks down the Calculus into simple concepts and explains it clearly. If you're ever lost, he's super helpful. Most people struggle with the algebra, not the calc. DO THE REVIEW PROBLEMS! It's essentially the test. Also, if you don't practice/do the HW, you won't pass.
Professor Hilst was a pretty solid professor. He is quite serious and doesn't say much other than when he is lecturing. This class heavily relies on lectures so it can be a bit much. There are homework quizzes and exams which are really the only things that go into your grade. So if you bomb a test it will heavily affect your course grade. Do HW!!
If you are a slow learner I recommend him. He took his time to explain and lecture. Answers questions if you have any but pay attention he can get frustrated if you ask the same thing over and over
Not much to say, he is a great Trig professor and I learned a lot from him.
This is a basic review of calculus but with business applications. As long as you show up to class, pay attention to lectures, and do the homework you should do well. He spends a lot of time in class reviewing any questions you may have on homework. My advice to succeed in this class is to do hw early instead of cramming right before the test.
exams are 70% of your grade so you have no wiggle room if you not a good test taker. Doesn't really give good help when struggling. If your good at math you'll be fine, if you suck you'll fail like I did :((
So far best math professor I've had at COC, I really like his teaching style. If you're not good at math take him its hard and you need to put in a lot of work but you'll learn a lot
He is a great professor, he goes over everything really well. If you do not get it all you have to do is ask questions and he will help. He doesnt collect homework but gives homework quizzes on test day. So basically most of your credit will come from tests. Definitely will take again for future math classes if possible
The classwork is easy if you're good at math I, however, was not very good at it and I asked questions constantly but he seemed annoyed. The lectures were good. The class alone is time-consuming because you have to put in the effort to achieve that A.
His lectures are easy to follow and he takes the time for questions in order for the students to understand. There is a lot of hw but it is optional. Graded by very few things such as group work, hw quizzes, and exams. The exams are hard but if you point out something he graded, he might give you partial credit! I would take him again!
Overall solid choice. Lectures are a bit quick. Vast amount of various Precalc material is covered. Great prof. Difficult to gauge on a personal level; Hilst is a no-fuss professional personality. Yet, he does occasionally make a joke (I was always entertained). Transitioned to only online. I wish the questions in exam were not evenly weighted.
Although Professor Hilst was a bit intimidating in person, he was always easily accessible outside of class through email, especially due to covid-19. His lectures were incredibly easy to follow. He made this class fairly simple. If you follow the lectures and do the study guides, theyre identical to the exam. You wont regret taking him.
Taken at the initial COVID-19 hit. This professor is a straight shooter. No funny business gong on here. Was very accommodating considering the circumstances. Lectures were youtube style but his exams didn't veer from what was taught. Study guides helped PLENTY when it came to succeeding in his class. Highly recommend.
Overall an excellent instructor. Extremely kind, especially with those of us who do not find the course material easy. Lectures are in depth and detailed. If you want to pass, you definitely need to watch/listen to lectures and do the homework for practice. Very intelligent, helpful.
100% online. We had pre-recorded videos. Didn't have to turn in homework which was the catch because you can not fully understand without the homework. I did not always do it bc of that. Little opportunity for extra credit. Classwork was attendance. Was meant to be a zoom class but he decided to have all c/w , quiz and exam during his zoom time.
He is an amazing teacher. It is a regular math class with notes, quizzes, and tests. There is daily homework and his notes are online, lecture videos that he recorded himself. If you have any questions on anything he will reply to your comment with a COMPLETE step by step to make sure that you find the area where you messed up so you can learn. ;)
I had him for the spring semester and he is the definition of a teacher. He supplies you with the lessons via video lectures and gives corresponding homework. There are homework quizzes that are given a day before the tests. He will answer ANY question you are stuck on. You do not need to submit work in this class so study for tests.
he taught the class everything but gave harder examples on the study guides and who you ska a question he makes you feel stupid when he's known all of this information for years and were just learning it. However the other professor was ranked worse so he's the best out of the two options but just make sure to get extra help from someone else.
The the class itself is somewhat difficult because of the material, but if you apply yourself and actually do the homework, you'll do great. He's always willing to help no matter how small the question. He even goes as far as giving students a study guide that shows everything that is going to be on the upcoming test. Take him!
Professor Hilst is always ready to help, either online or in class. The secret of success for any math class is to finish your homework (correctly). Yes there will be decent amount of homework but it's the only way to test our understanding of materials. All assigned homework is similar to problems covered in class. Take notes!
He posts the lecture notes, but I still recommend you follow along in class. Study guides are same layout as the tests & completed in class. Ask clear questions, he wants nothing more than to help! The key to math is practice, set aside time for homework. Go to office hours prepared. Also, I found a free pdf of the textbook online.
Love Prof Hilst! He made math sooo much easier for me and helped me understand things I didn't understand when I was in high school. His lectures are not boring and group work was so helpful. The tests are short and every 2-3 weeks. HW collected every 2 weeks. Ill definitely be taking him again next semester for calculus.
He does not allow calculators and only grades on homework and exams. When you ask him a question he makes you feel very stupid and does not always give helpful feedback. You turn in homework all at once before an exam so staying on top of assignments is super important.
Professor Hilst is a good professor. Every class is the same, ask questions about previous homework problems, he lectures, you take notes and then some group work. I appreciate his grading as he is more lenient on exams. If you show some correct work, you will get some credit. It does get boring and wish it was more fun, but it is just math.
I took Professor Hilst this summer for Calculus II. I had taken it two times previously and both times the professors left me in confused. Prof. Hilst makes a steady effort to teach his students the most clear cut ways to solve a problem, as well as the concepts in the background. His grading is clear cut, started the class with a D ended with an A
Not an easy teacher. Get ready to learn a lot and will need to study for his tests. All written tests. If you are not a math person I recommend finding someone else.
His lectures are very clear and he is always asking us questions to make sure we understand. The homework can be a lot, but it's all due at once so you have time to catch up. Professor Hilst is always there to help. It was clear that he wanted all of us to do our best in his class and I believe if you put in the effort, this class is an easy A.
Professor Hilst wants you to succeed! He is helpful, always holds review sessions in class but you MUST stay on top of homework and studying as homework/exams are due all at once! It is not to underestimate.I found the lecture examples way simpler than the textbook homework questions. Some chapters were light work, others required time to absorb.
Great professor, on my 2nd year of school so far and he's the best professor I have had so far. Haven't taken math in 4 years and jumping into a trig class was definitely hard in the beginning but after putting the time and effort in, it was a breeze. Any questions you have do not be afraid to ask they will be answered.
I took Professor Hilst in both the fall and spring of last year. And while Business Calculus is a hard subject, he makes it a lot easier for the average student to understand it. If you keep up with the homework and do the study guide multiple times alone or with a group before the tests, you will do great! Best Business Calc Professor at COC
Professor Hilst is great - very helpful and engaging. The class has a heavy workload, but with unstuck AI and dedication, it's doable. Definitely attend lectures and use the free textbook.
This class requires that you engage with the material to succeed, but Professor Hilst does what he can to ensure you are catching onto the material. He does seem to care about the subject and the material, and is a generous grader/lecturer. There is a fair bit of homework, but he doesn't collect but every few weeks, so you have time to get it done.
I took the 5 week course last summer. HW was collected once per week, Exams/Quizzes once per week as well. He spends the first ~30 minutes of class going over any questions people have, so office hours weren't really necessary. His lectures are good and he is a fair grader when it comes to partial credit. Also drops lowest your exam score.
My goat. He's hands down one of the best math professors I've ever had. His style of teaching is very example heavy; typically starting with the basics and adding on more and more. This builds an understanding of the topic as a whole rather than bits and pieces. Highly recommend
You get 1 day of study guide review and take the test the following day. A better structure would be to have the study guide a week ahead of test day
This class was one of the most difficult classes I've taken. When I would ask questions I felt like his answers were no help. His tests are difficult and worth over 60% if your total grade, even if you pass the homework and class work you can still fail the class.
One of the best professors I've ever had! It's calculus, so of course it's supposed to be challenging at times, but if you practice and ask questions, you will do great. He is always there to help. His teaching and explaining style is very easy to understand. He even gives study guides for each exam which are very very similar to the actual exams.
Really really good professor. I'm not the biggest math person but the class is so inviting. He answers all of your questions and at times he can act like you should know something already but lol he is really good. I like the way he teaches a lot, he'll explain the review before the same. The reviews are pretty identical to the exam as well.
Really good professor. Enjoyed his class and the structure was easy to follow
