He is terribly hard. Lectures on least important things and tests you on those. Doesnt use text. Tests and quizzes hard. Upper chem students couldnt do them either. Stay away and take D Dawson!
Tenn is the instructor to take if you want to learn the material and remember it. Don't bash an instructor if you failed the class because you chose not to spend the extra time out of class to learn the material.
He is awesome. Its not like hes hard but chemistry isnt easy and it really takes time to understand and practice is important. He puts a lot of emphasis on the homework but its for the students own good because the homework is really helpful in understanding the material.
He's a really great teacher! He breaks down chemistry as simple as possible! He's very approachable and you can ask for help anytime! Homework is SUPER important! It makes the learning process so much easier! I strongly suggest Tenn for Chem 02A
Great teacher! VERY passionate about Chemistry. Chemistry is not easy, but he tries to make it as easy and fun as possible. He wants to get his students engaged in the topic. Tests are exactly from the notes; he tells you exactly what will be on them, his grading is fair and will answer any questions you have!
Dr Tenn is very passionate about chemistry and he *can* be helpful, if he's not asking condescending questions, that serve no purpose but to make a class feel stupid. He rambles during lecture and scribbles on the board so fast we cannot keep up. Also the homework load is ridiculous. And he has taken to giving quiz's every Monday. Good luck.
To begin with 4B is a tough class and is not for the average Joe. Tenn does move fast during lecture IMO, but that's because I never looked over the handouts prior to lecture. Hes always willing to help if you ask. HW is online and I personally didn't like it because you get docked off points for each time you answer wrong.
Dr. Tenn presents the material clearly and takes time for the people it doesn't come natural to. He is very fun and has a great relationship with his students. Chemistry in general can be hard, but with his help and learning tricks, it can be fun and exciting. I recommend you take chem from TENN!
Dr. Tenn is a really good teacher. If your having problem with something just ask. Lab is mandatory, so try not to miss that. I didn't buy the text book because the lab, lecture and homework were enough to prepare for the quizzes and exams.
His works are complicated, especially for someone who has no interest in chem. He lectures way too fast and kinda expect everyone to catch right on.
super hard class because he doesn't give enough time on exams! that is the only problem (huge problem though).
Not so easy to understand. Hard so obtain some help! No need to buy book. Only online sapling homework!
Very helpful professor, but teaches at a fast pace, helps out a lot in lab, online sapling homework was not much help, book wasn't used much but a better resource than the online homework. Test and quizzes aren't too long but problems are long, some of the material on the tests wasn't covered in lecture.
Clarity can be muddled during the beginning but as the class progresses It becomes clearer. Dr. Tenn runs the toughest of the Chem 2A's and I would not recommend if you do not plan to take higher chemistry courses. As for helpfulness, clarity can be an issue, but if you are willing to meet during his office hours or in lab he is extremely helpful.
4B is not for the average lay person. You have to work to earn a grade. I was nervous going into Tenn's class because of what ppl wrote on here. I barley passed with a C with putting 5 hours a day on hw. This isn't the class just to "coast" through. Tenn is a good professor and willing to help upon asking and visiting during office hours.
Bleh. Show up. Read. Pass. On to the next phase. Will say though, he's confusing as heck. If you can teach yourself, you'll do fine.
Tenn is a good professor if you could keep up with his lectures. He talks super fast and just scribbles on the board. He is helpful when you need it, but even when I would ask for help he was way to fast for me to keep up with.
He is a really good professor. Does his best to help you if you have a problem. Very understanding. If you're close to the next letter grade and you've been doing your homework he will bump you up,
Hard to ask for help because he asks questions in return to your question, rather than helping you answer it. Doesn't expect you to attend lecture but does for lab. Homework is online. Lectures were done in videos online, explainations and clarifications from videos were done in lecture. Watch videos and take notes, pop quizzes were on videos.
Homework is online. Lectures were done online. Didn't like the videos. He didn't really care if you were in class, just show up to lab.
Doesn't spend ANY time actually teaching chemistry. He briefly touches upon each subject without explaining it in any depth and expects students to catch on immediately. His test and quizzes are difficult and he doesn't allow enough time for many people to complete them. I have never had this much trouble in a science class before.
Average difficulty in that if you do your homework you should be prepared for the quizzes and tests. Quizzes will trip you up a little but they are not that heavily weighted making them great to learn from for tests if you don't do well.
If you want an A in the class you gotta make sure you go to the SI Sessions and tutorial center to get the concepts into your head. He's very approachable so make sure you take advantage of that if you need help with anything. Always do your homework and sign in to Reef if you want to stay in the class with a good grade.
Dr. Tenn is a great professor who really loved to engage in his class. The reason people weren't engaged in class was either because they were sleeping or had no care for science or learning. If you love to learn and have hands on problems then he's the professor to have because he is very helpful and overall friendly guy.
He is using an app called reef which makes his lectures garbage. His whole style of teaching is based on letting you struggle for an answer. Which for most people didn't work since the population of the class dropped by more than half after the first test. Check out the lecture before you take the class his style is different from the norm.
difficult class for general chemistry, notes are online, classtime is used doing problems, uses clicker reef, gives little time for tests and quizzes, quizzes are pass or no pass
Great professor, he's really passionate about his job and he cares about his students learning the material. His course may be odd since you do problems in class and learn the material at home, but it's really not that bad if you put in the work. He gives out a lot of quizzes and somewhat a lot of homework but just complete them and you'll be fine
Too demanding. Dont be surprised if you fail because class average for test scores is in the 50s. He tells you to read before you come to class, and reading is the only way you might pass the class. *MIGHT*. This is coming from someone who aced Physics 04A-04C . Doesnt allow enough time to finish his tests he should consider giving them in lab.
Horrible professor, he makes you learn the chapters on your own before lecture begins. Which is all online. During lecture he does not teach anything, it is just a review of what you "should already know" by the night before. You are basically teaching yourself the material and lecture is just review. Attendance is also MANDATORY.
Dr. Tenn has a different teaching style; he tries to scaffold students learning by helping them find the answers themselves. This class was so challenging! You have to read the text and show up to every class to pass. Every "lecture" is similar in style to a pop quiz on the recent readings and material. He is a tough grader.
Expects you to read before class, then come to class ready for examples. You lose points through an app called REEF which you have to answer the examples on. He forces you to read/annotate your book, which is helpful for the UC. BUT HIS TESTS ARE TOO BRUTAL. More than half the class dropped. Avoid if u can. Had to drop twice. Dont make my mistakes
Doesn't lecture, only does questions in class and expects you to know them. His homework is online and they are a bunch of curveballs. He should stick to giving homework out the openstax book. Tests u inappropriately hard, I was left questioning my ability to learn after his class. Dropped almost at the end. Took it at another college and got an A+
Best teacher Ive had in years!
One of the worst teachers Ive ever had the displeasure of taking. He expects you to be able to answer complicated and in depth questions when the lectures he gives you barely scratch the surface. Dont even think about asking a question if youre lost. Hell just hit you with what do yo think it is? If you need to take science just take Davies
Definitely not an easy to learn from teacher. He's a pretty nice guy and I think he means well but I couldn't learn anything. He expects you to read the whole chapter before coming to class and barely goes over anything in lecture OR lab. Sapling is a TERRIBLE online system he uses. DO NOT TAKE HIM. I had to drop with a W.
Uses Reef, but does not actually teach during class, making class a waste of time. i lost points because of Reef, tests were a drag, and half of the class dropped in only 2 months. Don't bother asking for help, he just responds with another question wasting your time. All I would give him is that he bumps your grade if you do you homework.
Thee worst Professor I have ever had! I had to take a W two months into the semester because there was no way I was going to pass. He does not actually teach anything, he expects you to learn everything yourself outside of class. He also does mandatory 'benchmark quizzes' that you have to pass, its only pass or fail no in between. He is the worst!!
Worst professor I ever had. Uses reef in lecture instead of teaching, making lectures a waste of time. I had to try to teach myself the subject because he could not. Half of the class dropped in a month because that class was impossible. His methods of "teaching" are unorthodox, useless to anyone wanting to learn, and just plain bad.
I tutor math 10 and everytime a student from his math class comes to the tutorial center for help, no one is able to help, not even the best tutors! because his math assignments are like phd level. It's outside the scope of what other professors have taught us. I think something should be done about this because his students keep failing every year
Horrible. If you asks questions he doesnt explain it to you he just makes you feel more stupid and acts like you should know it. Tests are so long that no one in the class can finish it within an hour. Save your time and dont.
awful. I would honestly never take him again. If you absolutely need to take this class, take anyone else.
Bleh. I just barely passed because I had to do the work myself, but the only problem was that I did not have the time, I mean, we all have lives outside of class. Plus, I learned nothing from lectures and had no notes to refer to because of that reef thing.
Dr. Tenn is extremely diffficult, but not impossible. He gives plenty of opportunities for you to learn & ask questions. Literally reachable all hours of the day. Great professor, would definitely take him again.
I took his class for Chem 4B and he expected us to do the reading before we came into class. He uses a variety of media for communication and grading. Also, make sure to keep up with the homework for the majority of the class so you aren't doing it all at the end of the semester. He is accommodating, if you ask him to extend a due date he will.

Dr. Tenn is an excellent professor. He wants his students to succeed not only in chemistry, but in future science courses and life! If you follow his game plan and his philosophy on how to study, you will become a great scientist. If you're looking for an easy science class - then pick another major because you're not cut out for the sciences.
I don't want to say that he's a bad teacher; I just think that he has a different style of teaching. He expects you to learn the material before going into class so you'll be able to practice it during class. He is meticulous in his grading so keep that in mind when you show your work. Although his class may be hard, I think that he is passionate.
Not a good professor. You won't learn ANYTHING. I had to drop the class. Save your time and money and don't take this professor
I would recommend you NOT to take this teacher. It is more like a self taught class you have to watch videos and take notes from them. Most difficult class that I have had attending Merced College. The exams are impossible he expects a 50% average on the first exam. Does not provide a study guide!
Dr. Tenn does not lecture. If you are a student who struggles learning on your own- THIS PROFESSOR IS NOT FOR YOU. I respect his knowledge, but he teaches as though we were all Chemistry majors. He moves quickly through concepts and his pre-recorded video lectures are of minimal help. He's smart, but you won't be.
his grading style is so nontraditional, wants you to know everything about the chapters before coming to class. Doesn't offer and lecture notes, and words his tests way different than the examples he shares in class. He make up quizzes as he goes and i'm assuming writes his tests like the day before the exam. take another professor if you can.
Im gonna start with this, dont take this class. Save yourself the stress, the countless social hours you will lose. This is the absolute worst professor I have ever taken, and being someone who is naturally smart even this class was far more difficult than it should be. If you dont study early on, good luck. Doesnt teach, pick another professor.
DOESN'T REPLY TO STUDENTS IN PRONTO, HE NEVER LOOKS AT IT UNTIL A WEEK LATER SO IF STUDENTS HAVE A QUESTION, AND OTHER STUDENTS DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER, THEY WON'T GET HELP SINCE HE IS NEVER THERE. HE MAKES YOU WATCH HIS VIDEOS WHICH ARE NOT CLEAR AND THEN EXPECTS YOU DO SHOW UP AND KNOW THE WORK. TERRIBLE PROFESSOR, NOT RECOMMENDED
In Dr. Tenns class you must be prepared to spend at least 9 hrs a week, doing homework, studying and watching his lectures online. Yes, all of his lectures are online so you pretty much have to teach yourself. In class you will do problems related to the online lectures and you are expected to know how to do the problems. Beware, quiz heavy too.
Hands down worst professor at Merced College, do not take if you have the choice! I'm not exaggerating! HE DOES NOT TEACH! He only holds classes for questions! DOES NOT LECTURE! He expects you to learn everything on your own then he will only answer questions about content. His tests are ridiculous he says he expects average score of 50% on exams.
I've always been a pretty solid A/B student but this class had me sincerely doubting myself with everything. Lecture is just review of the videos he posts, most of which aren't really in depth enough for the material. Takes forever to grade anything. There's a ton of Knewton homework, most of which isn't anything like exams. Take anyone else.
It takes extreme effort to get A or B+, content is hard. Dr.T himself is a great person and loves to answer student questions, his teaching dynamic is very unique, but it works. Very easy to get lost in that class, keep up with reading, do tons of practice problems, take notes, and prepare to speak loud! Dr.T has forgets his hearing aids sometimes!
You MUST be prepared before you are going to his lecture he only will respond to your questions during lecture. He won't explain or tell you about how does he wants everything (lab reports, calculations for labs, etc)If you cheat he will go under an investigation even contact the internet sources you used to get some more info of you.
Next week marks the start of the 9th week of this semester, and I am just now starting to get it. He does not lecture. I would have dropped this class if I hadn't spent so much money on books. He assigns anywhere from 15 to 25 assignments per week. In this climate with remote learning, he took no time to see how we learn, just threw work at us.
Chem is a hard subject, you will have to do a lot of work and dedicate a lot of time to the course. At least while it's online it's mostly self-taught which could be a pro or con depending on who you are as a student. Dr. Tenn is always available to help and does what he can to figure something out when you approach him. Great professor overall.
Professor Tenn was a great guy but, the way how he taught the class was horrible. He made the lecture super confusing. Quizzes are killers and make or breaks a A- to an A. Exams are decent, as long as you take great notes and do the practice he gives you, you'll do good. Lab is pretty straightforward. As long as you're on task he's cool.
with remote learning, it was pretty difficult to be successful in this class. as of rn i have a 75% but thats only because ive been keeping up w my assignemnts. however the reviews dont seem to be anything like the exams and the lecture still dont make sense. youll only be good as long you watch multiple youtube videos and keep up w your work
Does not lecture, he only gives you the assignments with a brief explanation but does not actually teach you how to do it. He also gives a lot of work. For me chemistry has not been my strength but with him I believed I struggled much more than I needed to. Unless you're good at chem and already know a lot don't take him.
During an online setting prof does not lecture. You'll be teaching yourself the material and to do well you need to teach yourself well. Professor is happy to answer questions and very approachable. Lots of work. Exam averages were around 30% and worth 40% of final grade. A lot, if not most people dropped or failed. Not impossible but hard.
This class doesnt have lectures and he doesnt lecture. Pretty much you are learning by yourself. At some point I wanted to drop this class but he told me to keep pushing forward. The exams and final you have to passed them with a least 60% and you have to complete all labs and homework in order to pass the class.
I took this class last semester. It was super challenging and sometimes stressful, but the course forced me to figure out what methods of studying work best and work on time management. Finishing up general chem I now, the class was significantly more manageable due to preparation I had taking CHEM-02A with Prof. Tenn. I would recommend overall.
Do not take this professor, he makes up all of his work therefore it is very confusing. Also I should mention he dont really message you back! I would definitely NOT recommend taking this class with him take it with someone else..I went to tutoring but even they were confused of his work!! Science is hard but this professor makes it harder sucks.
Professor Brandon is Amazing . He will work with you as long as you put in the work in the class. We have two labs. The first one is Alek and the second one is Mcmillian lab. We also have class discussions and reading notes to turn in. Just make sure you understand the notes very well if you don't let him know. You will have two quiz is GLO & ELO.
Did not have a pleasant experience. I was struggling and reached out to him but he said to read the textbook or watch YouTube videos. He did not provide any lecture videos or Zoom calls either. Therefore, I dropped his class as I was not going to struggle to teach myself because it's his job. There were so many assignments and quizzes/tests.
Makes up majority of his work, besides Aleks and Macmillan work. Grades on "learning credit" system. Do the weekly quizzes and any extra credit. I did poor on confusing exams and extra work saved me. 3/4 exams has optional group portion to also help with your grade. Allows late work till end of semester. Difficult subject, 13 hours a week of work!
He was a very caring professor. He made sure I understood the material and helped me with any and if not all questions that I had. However, I still struggled with understanding the concepts especially because he made up his own. There were a lot of homework and it didn't work with my schedule.
Grades work off of learning credits rather than the actual percentage you received from the assignment. Claimed to always be available, but never responded back to emails.
Met the professor in person told me no HW for the 1st week, came home to 13 modules. Assignments were more like an English class participate in discussions. Bought digital copies of the book now I'm in debt because they aren't returnable. I hope to find a better professor or at least something that isn't online. He's difficult read other reviews.
You have up to three quizzes every week which dont even go toward your grade if you dont reach his benchmark. Example if you get 6/8 you get a zero. He has his own grading system which is hard to achieve. You should expect quizzes, ALEKS(5-15 topics weekly)discussions and labs every week. And he uses a made up periodic table sometimes. DO NOT TAKE
If your looking for a bad semester take this class, He fills students with lots of work and makes his own problem which makes chemistry even harder . Upon his tough assignments he is a tough grader which makes quizzes and homework ten times harder. At the end of the semester there were only 5 students in his class, that shows something.
Unclear lectures. Very picky grader. LOTS of homework.
If you are someone with a high amount of daily responsibilities other than school, DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.The amount of homework is crazy and you HAVE to handwrite your notes or else he will not accept them. The notes are considered as an assignment and will dock off points if they are not properly structured. Group discussions are also REQUIRED.
The grading system and heavy homework pissed me off.Can you imagine a C after aleks with 90%, 73% lab And passed all quizes(25).Attented classes every day, just by 1 credit I got a C.I know how much hard work I paid in very less time still got a C.Good teachers would give me one credit to get a B after tons hard work.never take this teacher again.
Save yourself the headache. The amount of work you get is awful. Maybe if this was your only class and had nothing else going on in your life it would be tolerable. Doesn't do lecture and doesn't teach the material. His belief is that if you know how to read you can teach yourself. Defeats the purpose of teaching all together. Wish I could add more
This class is an absolute sh*tshow. Tenn does not teach you on the subjects unless specifically asked to. You are expected to do upwards of 20 hours a week of homework on your own time. The notes done each week don't match up with the work done in class half of the time, and he changes topics constantly. If I could fit more in this review I would.
Most awful four months of my life. This class has been the source of my stress and I'm counting down the days. His grading system is horrendous, and he assigns upward of 20 hours of work per week. I had no free time from the beginning of the end to the class and stayed up every night until midnight getting work done.
do not take this course, one week of chemist assignments was more than my 3 other classes combined. notes have to be handwritten taken from his notes he took from the book. Uses his own measurements and periodic tables which make chemistry more confusing.
Horrendous professor he is the absolute worst person that has stepped foot in a room he cannot add any value to a students mind. He is pushing topics and not explaining anything he then gives quizzes and lecture all over the place. Does not give any incentive to following order of syllabus because he teds to be everywhere when quizzes are given.
I took the AP equivalent of this class in high school and loved it; I even passed the class with extra credit. Yet somehow when I came here, all the work he does is completely different, and he just calls it "his method." Grading is unclear, and he doesn't even teach but will judge you for not knowing something. terrible time with this professor.
Professor Tenn is a sweet/nice person. However, he seems to have an unconventional teaching style. He requires you to have read chapters of readings before entering his class. He only gives work, no teaching. His grading policy is very strict: quizzes and exams require high scores in order to count. Kind but needs to improve his teaching approach.
PLEASE LISTEN TO ME WHEN I SAY THIS, DO NOT TAKE HIM HE WILL STRESS YOU OUT SO MUCH, HE MAKES UP HIS OWN AND WANTS EVERYTHING HIS WAY AND JUDGES STUDENTS FOR THINGS HE DOESNT EVEN TEACH.
He's a nice person and he had no issues helping me with my work. He also allows late work with no penalty. However, his teaching style and the amount of homework he gives is sort of ridiculous. Handwritten Cornell style notes required for every section. He has his own confusing grading point system too. Good luck if you work or have other classes.
Don't recommend if you have a busy schedule, this course gives out a ton of assignments per week.
He is so kind and cares a lot for his students, but his work is awful. Theres 6-7 assignments a week including a lab and quizzes, and you have to take handwritten cornell notes. If you don't understand the readings good luck because nothing ever makes sense. He accepts late work and you get multiple attempts at quizzes though. Hes nice but omg.
A nice professor, If you try in this course he will match your energy. He gives more attempts on quizzes, and allows late work. But yea, a lot of work. Extra credit is provided weekly which brought my grade up. I was behind by weeks but crammed my late work last minute and still received an A. Seems people hate to disguise their own shortcomings.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! This professor requires you to do everything his way, specifically and if you don't, he punishes you for it. He uses his own grading system, which doesn't make sense. Non of the tutors can help nor can he. 6-8 assignments per week, including 10 topics on ALEKS and you will get behind if you put off for one day. Horrible
This guy is amazing, but his workload is TERRIBLE. This is the worst class I have ever taken when it comes to work. He has a weird grading system. He is TONS of work. I only took 3 classes this semester and this class alone felt like 2 of them. Very nice but very hard, I dropped out a month before ending the class, it was just too much.
