Do NOT take her if you're not willing to work! A great deal is expected of the students, but she makes it worth it. One of the best classes I've taken. She's very willing to help you out if you need advice on anything, plus she truly cares about students
Very difficult. Expects a lot out of her students, and she's a tough grader. She does seem to really care about her students though.
She was great. Yeah it was hard, but she was more than willing to help point you in the right direction.
she is very sweet, caring and welcoming, and somehow sheds new light on our monthly communicaiton interns group discussions and makes you gain a new understanding from your internship. also, if you do what is outlined in the course packet, you get an A.
Took her a number of years ago for CMUN 101. Assignments were fair as was grading. A very good class. Still remembers me after all these years.
Murphey is the sweetest lady ever. She's such a doll and will always help students out
Brilliant!
AVOID this professor at all costs! Although a lot of my friends warned me not to take her, I had to take because I am a Magis Scholar and there are barely any Magis courses offered. She is way too very political. If you are a guy, don't expect to do well in her class, she is ****. She is not helpful, I e-mailed her several times but she ignoredme

Requires a lot of work out of you, but is fair in grading and you know you actually learn something. Smarter than anyone in the room.
Do not take her if you are a guy. She hates all male students and you will not do well in this class.
She was always fair. Too much philosophy but over all the class was pretty good. Several presentations and quizzes. Fair grader as well. And I'm a guy.
Dr. Murphy knows her materiel. The class can be difficult (it's a Magis class), but if you show up, do your work, study for tests, and particpate in class, you can get an A (and I am a man, so it's not impossible). Discussions can get political, but if you stand up for your beliefs, she will respect you. Good class and a good professor!
Great teacher, very passionate about material and exercises and tests are boring. Easy B, one big portfolio due at end, couple tests and case studies, overall good.
Fair, innovative, passionate and caring...you'll learn a lot about the subject and yourself. Don't bother if you're a slacker.
this teacher is the most bias person ive ever been in contact with. Do not take her!
so cool...there were almost 50 people in this class and she learned all of our names. Discussions were good....challenging but respectful. take this class if you like to think about how ethics affects real life
Fabulous professor! Very intelligent and caring. Highly recommended!
Dr. M worked hard to support her interns. It was definitely one of the best experiences I've had at Loyola. Oh...and she's got a great sense of humor.
Murphy is one of the hardest working professors at Loyola and she really cares about her students. She goes out of her way for you and she's very clear about what she expects from you. Discussions are always fun and educational and she's not too hard of a grader as long as you put an effort in. She definitely deserves her paycheck and worth ur $
Dr. Murphy is an outstanding teacher. Although she grades hard and pays attention to detail, their are few professors out there of her caliber. It was a joy to run acroos her in my academic career. And as for internships, I have done two with her, and both have been awesome. She really knows her material and is such an intelligent person.

What a joy to be in her class! Dr. Murphy is an extremely intelligent, funny and creative professor who leads interesting discussions and engages her students constantly. Her methods of teaching are outstanding and her dedication to student's success is admirable. The readings are interesting and she focuses on what is really important in the book
amazing course...thought the old films would be boring and they were totally awesome!! Dr. Murphy's ability to relate them to the readings was really interesting...a great way to approach feminist issues.
don't take her! She bores to death and then you have to do community service. If you can take someone else!
You have to think. She's challenging but very interesting. And I was apprehensive about the service but it made a lot of sense. After all. This IS an ethics class. The film clips were perfect.
If you have a brain and a conscience, she's your professor.
I learned so much..she's an amazing professor. Her insights and examples were remarkable. And it was fun.
She used film to teach Issues in Feminism and it was an excellent experience. I liked the lectures, discussions and readings and thought the films and film clips were really interesting. Nothing spoon fed. Work hard, learn a lot. She's one of the very best.
Her brand of feminism is so old it has mold growing on it.
Being a feminist has nothing to do with whether Dr. Murphy is a good teacher. She is helpful, insightful, and most of all--she loves what she does and she is good at it. By far the best teacher at Loyola.
Dr. Murphy is one of the best professors I have yet to take! She gives an insightful perspective on varying themes in feminism and does not neglect to deal with contemporary issues in scholarship. Highly recommend taking this prof!
Dr. Murphy is one of the best professors I have ever had. In response to another comment, the class was issues in feminism, not "how to be a feminist." And just to clear up any doubts, Dr. Murphy is a feminist. I learned so much from this professor. Take her!
She's a wonderful person, but I was not interested in the material. The Bok book was excellent and I would recommend it for anyone, however, I do not feel that this course was as "philisophical" as it could have been. Don't take it for philosphy credit.
Dr. Murphy is the best! So funny and really makes the class interesting!
Nice but didnt like the class. Her student teacher aaron who shes had for a few semesters is an idiot and the one grading the tests. although her being a feminist doesnt determine whether or not shes a good teacher, the class discussions where very liberally biased. she doenst monitor what the students say (ppl yelled and swore at each other)
Lectures were well-organized and insightful with lots of examples. Prof was great at conducting discussion. We had better discussions in a class of 70 than most of my smaller classes. She rocks!
I thought she exemplified what she was teaching. She was thoughtful, ethical, and a really good communicator. She's the kind of teacher I expect at a Jesuit University. And she was funny. I liked this class a lot.But you do have to work.
you need to buy the book, but its REALLY easy to understand and short, trust me, im not a big reader, in fact this is the only class I read for... She has a quiz every tue. on the readings which seems like a lot but is actually REALLY easy & is a huge grade booster. She gives lots of extra credit and ive never been bored in class. def recommend it
Bren Murphy made my semester! You may not always do great on her tests, but you will still learn, and she gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. Class is NEVER boring, she will make sure of that. I would absolutely recommend taking her if you get the chance.
Wonderful teacher! Knows what she is talking about. Need to do the reading and watch the movies- she gives quizzes every week, which are based on the reading and movie, they really help you grade. One midterm, one group project and 2 page paper.
great teacher! really loves what she is teaching!! fascinating class, totally worth taking with Bren
She's super sweet and very energetic. She makes people feel right at home and is not as intimidating as other professors on campus. She is a big fan of participation in class and a big movie buff. Also, she loooves nuns!
Does not feel like a 101 class at all. Hard grader. This will be hard if you have not taken a WSGS class before. Very hard take-home exams that will take you actually forever. Material was usually interesting except for lots of heavy theory at the beginning. Usually a nice lady, but sometimes I feel like she hates me for no reason.
challenging but totally engaging. Murphy treats you like an intelligent person. Great sense of humor!
She gives a lot of assignments but they are not hard and the attendance is not mandatory. She is a kind of hard grader but she is nice and seems to really love the subject. You only need to go to class on the days that she gives quizzes otherwise don't go you will be bored out of your mind.
This wonderful professor is not always easy, but she is always fair. Very interesting, helpful, and clear. She is willing to help you learn and definitely makes class enjoyable! I will certainly take any class she teaches.
This teacher is fair and the class is fairly easy if you study for the quizzes and tests. Make sure you ask questions about the assignments, she often does not make it clear what she actually wants.
She is absolutely awesome! I had her class at 8:30am but she definitely made it worth waking up for. Everything she says offers great insight and she's incredibly interesting. I would definitely suggest taking any class she teaches!
She was the best professor I had this semester. Didn't think I'd like basic communication theory but she made it interesting and fun. It was actually useful.
Unique class. It combined children's picture books, performance, neighborhood exploration and volunteer teaching. I LOVED working at Armstrong School. And it all came together when we each wrote our own children's picture book. Incredible experience. Incredible teacher.
Dr. Murphy is amazing! The best professor I have ever had. I don't know what the last person was talking about... Her tests are hard, but she makes the class interesting and is extremely helpful if you need it. Recommend this class but if not, definitely this professor. I love taking her classes.
Dr. Murphy is amazing! The best professor I have ever had. I don't know what the last person was talking about... Her tests are difficult, but if you read and study you will do fine. She makes the class interesting and is extremely helpful if you need it. Recommend this class but if not, definitely this professor. I love taking her classes.
The most interesting class I've ever taken. I absolutely love this professor! I've learned so much because she uses real life examples that help you better understand the topic. I definitely recommend this class. I'm taking a class next semester with her that isn't even required for my major, just to have her as a teacher again!
She's very smart and definitely engages the class. It was pretty difficult for a 101 level class but it was worth it. You'll learn a lot and read some interesting books.
this class was hard but it was definitely worth the work. she helps you whenever you need it, the assignments and readings are pretty tough though. take her upper level courses before her lower level ones, seems like she cares more.
Dr. Murphy is funny and engaging. Sometimes we wouldn't even discuss the readings and would discuss current womens issues instead. The only problem I have with her class is that participation is 25% of your grade which is great if you like talking in class, but if you're like me and hate it, it may tank your grade.
I loved her class. She is a great professor. Expects extreme detail in answers on tests but if you know that ahead of time you are good to go. Take her class.
She is awesome and keeps the class smiling. she gives you study guides that clearly tell you what to look at for exams. she is really great! i would definitely take another class of hers.
Prof Murphy is the greatest teacher you will ever have at loyola. weekly quizzes based on reading that are a breeze and three tests that mostly rely on knowing vocab and terms. Take her! you will not regret it, she makes comm interesting. I cannot say enough good things :-)
Oh Bren. I wanted to love this class, but I was confused on what she wanted on exams, quizzes and papers all the time. There's a quiz every week on about 85 pages of reading and we never talked about the readings. Emails went unanswered and clarity was entirely absent. The textbook was from the 1970s and impossible to read. Fine, not great.
A remarkable study of the evolving roles of women in film in 20th century. Huge effort weekly to choose film clips/movies to illustrate issues impacting relationships, society, gender identity and power in a given decade. Class was exceptional; well researched, thought provoking and deeply knowledgable professor. Great class discussions. Take it.
OK, I thought this might be a blow-ff, just watch a lot of movies and talk off the top of your head. Turns out we had to read and think and write clearly. Murphy was great but don't take if you can't do the work. Smart, funny lady but tough grader.
I loved professor murphy. She's conversational and witty. My only advice is to take advantage of her office hours and ask any questions you might possibly have. She's an over all very caring person who wants to encourage you to think outside of the box. Please take her.
The class may seem like easy common sense, but the quizzes and exams require more studying than you'd think. Very cool and likable teacher who will help you out if you need it. Weekly quizzes based on reading that are super easy and a few take home exams. The service learning is honestly the most annoying part of class but she's understanding.
Professor Murphy is one of the best teachers ever. If she feels her class isn't understanding something or needs extra help for the test, she is eager to meet with groups outside of class, and makes it fun. She treats her students as equals. Take advantage of office hours!!!
great class but a very hard grader. weekly quizzes that require a lot of reading and three exams that make up most of your grade
One of my favorite profs here at LUC! Tests are on the tougher side and there can be a lot of reading at times, but its worth it because she is an amazing prof with really fun lectures. If you don't understand something, definitely go to office hours! She is very helpful and just wants to see her students learn and succeed. Definitely take her!
Dr. Murphy is a good professor who knows a lot about communication. She can be somewhat degrading of students and expects a lot in your answers on tests. There is a pretty significant amount of reading and frequent quizzes. If you do the work, it's an easy A.
Dr. Murphy is one of the most amazing teachers I've ever had. She makes communication so interesting by connecting theory to everyday events, public issues, and big ideas. She's funny and really wants you to learn. Hard tests but she gives extensive study guides, reviews in class, and even schedules outside reviews. Take everything she teaches!
Bren is my GIRL! If you put in the effort, she will put in double. Set up multiple study sessions outside class, always answered emails, and was fun to talk to during office hours. Readings get LOOOOONG but honestly worth it. Her 5 question reading quizzes are annoying, but are only worth 3% each.
While I loved the first and second parts of the course, I absolutely hated the third part of the course. It seemed like a complete waste of time. Not to mention that Dr. Murphy doesn't do the best job of keeping lecture appropriately stimulating. I wish she had a better understanding of our cultural dynamic as a unique generation from hers.
This was my second course with Dr. OM and once again it was excellent. Her section is harder than most but we actually think! She covers a wide range of topics and invites us to contribute. It totally changed the way I see communication. Teachers like this are the reason I came to a Jesuit university.
This course in children's storytelling was awesome. I learned a lot, had a blast, and I think about it all the time. Made a difference in how I see children's literature.
This is my third class with Dr. OM and totally worth it. She's not about vague theory but about how critical thinking makes you a more thoughtful and engaged human being. She's very caring but don't expect things to be handed to you.
She's awesome. Indeed, she makes you read and is very specific, however, if you participate and go to her study sessions you will for sure do great. She's such a sweetheart. Very open-minded, caring, and wants the best for her students. She gives a quiz every week just general 5 questions on the TONS of reading, but it's manageable.
I thought this intro class would be easy and obvious. It was not. Dr. OM completely changed the way I think about communication. It's been over a year since I've taken this course and I'm still thinking about it. Solid choice.
LOVE BREN. took her for wsgs201. super easy A as long as you do the readings (which granted, there are a lot of). I got an A+ in this class and it was probably my easiest. gives weekly quizzes which are surprisingly hard but only 5 questions and dont count for much. and she drops the lowest one. final is take home. DEF take her.
Professor OM IS THE BEST. Her exams are pretty heavy, but honestly, she is the best. Weekly quizzes on heavy reading, but she makes this class so understandable and realistic. Just amazing.
Amazing professor! She honestly cares about her students, both in and out of the classroom, and her lectures were fascinating and very relevant to everyday life. Her section of COMM 175 focuses on interesting/relevant aspects of communication, unlike the history of COMM taught in other sections. Highly recommended; would definitely take again.
Bren is a very good teacher who is passonate about activism relating to gender. The tests are take home so you can really learn while taking the test instead of scrambling to write as much as you can in an hour.
Dr Murphy is amazing! Her lectures are relative to everyday life and she's funny, only complaint is that her tests are difficult as she expects a lot. Really sweet and really passionate about what she does. 11/10 would take again
She links the material back to daily issues which makes the class more interesting. Lots of great discussions. There were weekly quizzes and three exams (a standard one, a take-home, and a group presentation) + 2 case studies which were relatively easy but required lots of reading which it makes it unnecessarily difficult sometimes. Tough grader.
