She will fail you. She doesn't teach anything. Her grading is 100% random and she provides NO feedback as to why you got a 30% on the assignment you worked for hours on. When I dropped the class, the average grade was a D+ (I have a 3.9). STAY AWAY!!!!!!!
Brenda cares more about her students than any prof I've had so far. If you want to succeed you will, but if you don't take the time you won't. She will tell you exactly what she expects. I think she prepares you well for the business world because she makes you better yourself w/each assignment. GOO
She tells you her expectations right away. It is a very tough class. She gives you so many assignments. If you are willing to work hard and are able to take criticism well, if you can get in A in this class, suit yourself. She is the hardest teacher, but if you can get the grade, you will have learned the most.
I think she's really cool
Do the work and you'll be fine. You do have to put a lot of time into the class but it's definitely worth it. She is extremely helpful. May come off intimidating at first but so sweet and caring. GREAT CLASS!!!
I don't see what everyone is complaining about. I am a HORRIBLE public speaker, but I got a B+. She didn't give too much homework. Just make sure you have good grammar because surprisingly, she checkes that quite thoroughly. She's a great teacher! She tried to keep us interested but, what can you teach someone about speaking anyway??
Had to drop the class because i was in jail and missed a presentation that she didnt let me make up
she is hard to impress, quite a tough grader. she is extremely strict about absences, quite inhuman i would say. but she is an excllent teacher. i learned a lot in her class. wouldn't take her again though.
Horrible
She grades fairly harsh. (hard to get A but most of the class gets above B+) Her teaching method is very solid and sometime it will seem like the class is only 50 min since she makes the class very fun.
I loved this class. I think that she is a very good teacher for the topic. Does expect a lot out of you as a public speaker, but it is needed for the business world! Thought that few times she acutally did lecture were not that bad.
i suck at speeches. i did not receive anything below a C+ (even when i felt i deserved an F). i improved so much from the first day. Good teacher.
Definetly recommend her. She is very helpful, and wants you to succeed. You will have to put some work in, there's no easy As, but as long as you put some work into your speeches, you should get at the least a B. I really got alot better at speaking through this course.
She is the most unfair grader I've ever seen. She decides that she has a problem with some students and then she is unbelievably rude to them and grades them more harshly without any real reason. AWFUL
awesome
This was my favorite class this semester. The speeches require a ton of research. When we weren't presenting, Brenda was very insightful and helpful. The classroom environment was very relaxed and everybody in the class became very close.
Brenda was realy helpful if you had questions about how to improve, and the classroom environment was really laid back but dont even think about texting during it. She can be an unfair grader and definetly has favorites, but overall I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot
She can be very nice if she likes you. You have to be on her good side if you want to succeed in her class. She definitely has favorites and it is pretty obvious. If you do what you have to do and give decent speeches you can get an A in this class. Don't be late or miss too many classes though, because she is not ok with that.
If you are not one of her favorites switch into another section. Any type of "A" will be nearly impossible. She thinks smart people are dumb and dumb people are smart.
She can definitely be very intimidating in the beginning. But as long as you put in a decent amount of effort to your speeches, and have a good attitude, you should be able to get a high B or better. Try to talk to her about random things because if you have a more personal, friendly relationship with her it makes it a lot easier and pleasant.
i took a DA section with brenda. she does expect a lot of her students but i've gotten A's on most of my speeches. i definitely had to work for my A, but i learned a lot in the class and she is interesting to listen to and she's more than willing to help you out if you are having problems. i would recommend brenda! and no homework besides speeches
Good teacher, clearly tells you what you need to do to succeed in her class, just follow her tips, and you'll get a decent grade.
Great professor. If she sees that you're trying, you'll get a good grade. Especially go to her office hours; I went before the final and I swear she bumped my grade up to an A because she thought I had put in a lot of work.
Honest. If you're doing something wrong, she'll tell you. Public speaking isn't a place for people to bs around the point, and unfortunately, criticism is the only way to get better. Videotapes speeches and every time, what you watch and what she says is spot on. Thinking she's "mean" is just people not being used to being pushed to become better.
she is one of the most effective teachers at IU. she is brutally honest but she knows how to bring the best speaker out of everyone. there's no way to BS your speech. practice and do the work, go to her office hours, and you will not only get a good grade, but also improve more than you'd ever expect!
A good teacher who keeps the class interesting, however I have to agree that she plays favorites. I know poor speakers who received higher grades than much more practiced and professional speakers because they were her favorites. However, if she likes you it will be great. Switch to another section if you get on her bad side.
Brenda is a great teacher, however, she is one of the tougher teacher in x104. Nevertheless, a great way to do well in the class, and get an a, is to ask for help and go to office hours. shell help you out alot if you show her that you want to do better. overall though, a great teacher
Very straight-shooting professor; brutally honest, professional, and to the point. If you want to be a better speaker, look no further. If you want an easy A, look away. The group projects are challenging and her point system for speeches may seem arbitrary at times. However, there is plenty of busy work for easy points.
Brenda is a great teacher, and teaches with a "tell you as it is" attitude. However, as straight-forward as she is, she was a lot of fun, and made class interesting. Group work and grading are usually hard. However, this is one teacher that definitely makes you a better student. But if you're worried about getting an A, work real hard or switch.
Definitely one of the harder graders for X-104 but she is definitely worth taking! She will give you the best education about communication and you will see improvement. Going to office hours helps you learn the material AND get a better grade. Get on her good side for sure or your grades will show it. Good class- definitely recommend it.
Horrible teacher. I do not normally complain about my professors nor have I EVER had a problem in the past. The fact that the class teaches you to be fake and ingenuine (which she is) is one thing but the fact that she is closed minded, self righteous, and just overall an unintelligent educator makes it all the worse.
This class is really hard, you have to know the material, spend a lot of time on speeches, and be on her good side basically to get an A. If you ask her for advice on speeches and are nice in her class, you should be okay, but expect to spend a lot of time on speeches and to learn a lot. She definitely made me a better speaker.
Brenda is a great teacher. She really knows her stuff, and this class will challenge you and prepare you. Also she's a great person, so make sure to stop by her office hours if you're having trouble with a speech or just to talk. This class has definitely prepared me to give presentations, which is a necessary skill in any profession.
She is an awesome teacher. Some people do not like her because she gives you the grade you deserve, which makes some bitter, but if you can own up to your work and put in the hard work it is not hard to get an A. You don't have to be on her "good side." She likes any person who genuinely wants to be bette, this class is not for self-loving pansies.
This class is not something you can sit down and study for; She forces you to develop yourself and improve your speaking abilities! She has high expectations, but is very helpful when it comes to assisting students presentations. Not the best class if you're looking to keep a 4.0, but well worth an A- for the strides you'll make as a speaker.
If you are serious about studying business and improving presentation skills, you have to take Brenda's class. She is incredibly blunt with feedback which turns some people off, but if you heed her advice, you'll be a confident and well spoken presenter.
Brenda is one of my favorite Kelley profs yet. She's dead honest with her feedback, but she knows what she's talking about. It may rub some people the wrong way, but she will make you a much better presenter. On top of that she's super friendly, casual, highly experienced in the real world and is the ind of prof you want to keep in touch with
Quiz with multiple choices and essay questions were sometimes hard and confusing. The grading was occasionally not fair and you have to contact the professor to get points back (she's very kind on this tho). The final project had a very ambiguous description and several hidden rules which would affect your grade were not articulated. Be careful.
Great professor, loved the class. Office hours were always very helpful and she gave direct feedback that you could learn from for your next presentation. Definitely recommend her.
One of my favorite professors at IU. Taught be everything I know about effective public speaking.
Terrible grader. Moved the grade scale after the class was over and gave people with less than an 94.7 an A-, without telling us before the class started. If taking Icore know that you have to be above average to just get an A in a very pointless class.
A large portion of our grades was based on a system in which we were asked to provide honest feedback to teammates with numbers, but she used these numbers punitively in grade calculations. The system was confusing, and she yelled at me after I sent an email to explain it to peers. And then the final grades were calculated in a nonsensical manner.
Horrible grader. She hates powerpoint which is very unfair for people who chose to present by powerpoint instead of written documents.
Assumes students will be highly motivated to put in a lot of time and effort into a giant group project during I-Core. During our individual meeting, I was told to work on something that I have never had a problem with. The rest of the class is essentially leaves you to improve upon these skills that aren't of concern. CLASS NEEDS TO BE RESTRUCTED!
I'm pretty sure Professor Bailey-Hughes and Compass 3 is universally loathed by ICore Students. Take your negativity somewhere else!
The poor design of Compass 3 is magnified by having her as a professor. It makes no sense having the two main projects due the week of midterms and finals. Online compass 3 is not student's priority, especially during icore. Expectations are extremely vague yet takes off points on things she didn't even tell us to do.
Don't take Compass 3 with Brenda during I- core. It's totally waste your time and get a bad grade as well. I feel like compass 1,2 have way better structures.
In my 2.5 years at Kelley School of Business I've never disliked any professor until I met this woman. She is actually hands down the worst lady I have ever dealt with at Indiana. She teaches compass 3 which everyone expects to be a joke because of how simple compass 1 and 2 were. She loves giving kids negative scores out of 0 on assignments.
Make sure you include a screenshot of your letter to a client on time. Even if you send the email on time, she will deduct 10 points from your final grade. She often got confused which required me, her student, to explain things. Graded assignments super late compared to other compass professors. Lots of busy work.
She single handedly destroyed my GPA. Such an easy class, but she makes it ten times harder by grading the projects like one of those really old strict teachers we had in the fifth grade. Worst teacher I have ever had and would highly recommend never to take one of her classes. The class she teaches is so pointless and will never be useful.
Unrealistic expectations from students.
Probably the worst professor I've had through my 2.5 years at IU. Her expectations for this class is unreal and she expects you to dedicate a lot of time to a class that probably shouldn't even exist. I highly recommend getting any other professor other than this one for Compass III, she grades really hard and even a simple mistake will hurt you.
Without a doubt the worst professor I ever had. Professors should have the students best interest in mind, Brenda however couldn't care less about her students. My team asked for clarification on a grade, instead of offering us advice or clarifying anything, she said if we wanted her to regrade it she could lower our grade. Pathetic. Absolute worst
The worst instructor I've had at IU by a landslide. She taught Compass 3 and seemed to think we needed to spend more time on it per week rather than ICORE. The most pointless of all compass classes, and the highest expectations. Additionally she was very unprofessional in her appearance and demeanor frequently. Ran far away
never again!
Brenda was a terrible professor. She left her assignments worded vaguely, then grade against a rubric she was unwilling to produce for us. When she gave us feedback, she proceeded to make fun of us, exhibiting her hypocrisy in a class that preaches professionalism and leadership. She is a sub-par leader that bullies her students into submission.
Do not ever take her Comapass III. NOT RECOMMENDED! The class itself is not hard at all, but the grading is vague and no rubrics. She (or her TAs) is a hard grader. It is one credit hour class but has a final exam - only for her class. Whenever there's dispute with grading, it's hard to argue since instructions are VERY vague. Worst. Ever.
The rudest professor I've ever had. In order to meet with her to discuss final grades you had to do it at very unusual times, have your full team present during ICORE case week, and have a clear demonstration of why your grades should be adjusted. If you fail to meet her criteria, she will "severely" lower the grade you argue. What a leader!
The worst teacher I've had here at Kelley. The class in itself is completely pointless and she makes it even worse. I got a lower score on her final exam then I did on all exams during icore. I never write these but its needed to warn kids. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER.
The WORST professor I have had in Kelley. Gives vague instructions then takes off points (or gives F's) for not including aspects she did not say needed to be included. For teaching professionalism and feedback, she portrays the exact opposites of what she teaches. Rude and expects too much out of students while they are taking iCore.
Absolute worst proffesor I have ever had in or out of Kelley, Gives F's, minimal feedback, and much harder quizzes than any other teacher for compass. Makes me not want to even learn anything about Leadership
She is the absolute hands down worst teacher I've ever had... in my entire life. Her course is relatively unimportant and she treats it like the most important course in ICore. She gives very little instruction, then gives out terrible grades. She is incredibly rude, inconsiderate, unhelpful, and unprofessional. Avoid her at all costs.
Explains assignments terribly. Very inconsistent with expectation on assignments and criteria. Have not met anyone who has thought she does a good job.
i'm taking summer icore right now. she is horrible. i wish i can switch prof but she's the only one in this summer. how unfortunate!!!!!
If you are reading this right now, DROP AT ALL COST! Her class will make you regret enrolling in the business school. P.S. please like the comment if you dropped her
This class can destroy your gpa. Just don't take her class!!!!!
Hands down the worst professor ever. I'm pretty sure she gets off to failing students halfway through the semester and giving them more stress during I-core. Her grading scale is extremely messed up where if you miss 2 assignments (big or small) the highest grade you can get is a "D." She's extremely rude in email communications. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
For one measly credit I was forced to jump through a countless array of hoops. She thinks she is being clever by making the class like a game, but it only adds stress as all assignments are on a pass or fail basis. She is a terrible prof and optimizes the "If you cant do then teach", but she cant even do that so she is behind a computer screen.
Worst Professor in Kelley. If you are scheduling for ICORE, take a different section if possible. She makes this class 10x more difficult than it needs to be and places countless hoops that you need to jump through to even pass this class.
As someone who tries to see the best in people, I struggled to do so with BBH. A lesson for her in leadership: leadership is not effective when you piss people off so much they don't listen to you. Even if the course material is valuable, nobody wants to learn it because the redtape pisses us off so much. Would never recommend her or her class.
AWFUL! I have never felt inspired to write about negative experiences in classes before, but BBH changed all of that. Her expectations were completely unreasonable. Definitely recommend taking Compass III with another teacher. ICORE is stressful already and you don't need Compass III causing you all sorts of stress too.
Made this class so unnecessarily difficult and if you miss 1 assignment its an automatic D in the class. Do not take this Professor
This teacher is the absolute worst. So much work that will get you nowhere in life. I've never disliked a teacher more. Do not take her
She teaches a really interesting Honors course called Global Intelligence. Involves service-learning and barely any homework. Shes a really nice, well-respected professor who cares about her students. The other rates might seem otherwise, but I had a great experience with her and would definitely take one of her courses again.
She gave an absurd amount of work for a 1.5 credit class and graded incredibly harsh. Most of it for no reason. More work than my other ICORE classes combined - and its Compass!
Have to spend far too much time doing mind-numbing assignments as a "supplement" to the other classes. She's a tough grader considering this class is the least of people's priorities when taking ICORE. It's a mandatory class that's less than 2 credits. She's also made multiple errors when grading assignments which is incredibly frustrating.
Terrible. Work overload for the easiest class in I-Core.
She gives out an unnecessary amount of work for a one credit class that is widely considered a very easy class through Kelley. She is a tough grader with extremely high expectations and looks to deduct your grade. If I were a new student enrolling in T375, I would avoid Brenda at all costs, any other T375 professor is better.
Worst professor in my Kelley career. She gives an unnecessary amount of work for a one credit class during ICORE. Not only will you spend a lot of time doing pointless assignments, but she will do anything in her power to find reasons to give grade reductions. She is a professor that wants you to fail. DO ANYTHING IN YOUR POWER TO AVOID HER CLASS.
Brenda is the absolute worst teacher I have experienced in my entire life. Her class contains somewhat useful information but she had no idea how to teach. There are constant assignments that take hours to do and are complicated. Her grading is even more terrible and your final grade can be ruined by one missing or late assignment. Icore was easier
After reading through a lot of these reviews, Im happy to hear Im not the only one. BBH is on a huge power trip with her role as a professor and ability to affect our grades. She looks for every possible way to make grade deductions and nothing is reasonable. If you miss one assignment you are pretty much screwed. She does not encourage learning
Bar none, BBH is the worst instructor I have had in my academic career from kindergarten to the present. The staggering amount of nonsensical busy-work that this prof conjures out to the dark recesses of her mind puts all other Compass I, II and III professors to shame. Never in your life will you spend more time doing less. You have been warned.
This lady absolutely violates her students and gives so much work that I couldn't sleep at night. This is compass. Why you giving so much work? Felt like I was in the army. She grades like this is a PHD class. This is supposed to be an easy A, this lady grades like its K201. Made my life so much harder and I learned nothing valuable. Dont recommen
From the dawn of time, humans have faced difficult tasks. What makes BBH classes different is that the struggle isnt rewarding. Her busy work is spawned from the depths of Satan's Layer. The trials/tribulations of this class are not valuable. Compass and stress do not belong in the same sentence, but BBH finds a way. No cap tho dont take the class.
Never take this teacher. Gives so much busy work that has no benefit. Grades according to how she wants to, not according to the rubric she gives. Very bad teacher and would recommend everyone switches to a different teacher.
BBH's compass is like compass, but twice the work and 5x harder grading. If you take BBH's course, expect a ton of bs assignments and a B for no reason at all
Extremely meticulous grader, especially for a class like Compass. The material is not too hard (its compass), but the group leader projects can lead to you missing out on up to TWENTY PERCENT of your class grade if you don't read carefully. BBH is high energy and seems to care about what she does, but this class is async so up to you on engagement
She is fantastic and keeps your interest during lecture..
BBH is what makes Kelley Kelley. She is a world-class prof. who helps Fortune 500 executives with their communication skills. She's a pretty tough grader, but you will learn a lot through her extensive feedback. Highly recommend BBH.
Professor BBH was amazing for this class. She was super flexible and wanted her students to succeed. She brought out the best in students and wanted them to think critically. This was a service-learning class, and I was very happy to have taken it. She gives good feedback on papers and some assignments before class were time consuming but doable!
