Terrible Professor I wouldn't recommend her to anyone. Very unorganized and never gets tests, quizes or grades back to you on time.
She is the worst math teacher I have ever had. Very confusing, makes tons of mistakes on examples, stupid. bad hair
Not a good Prof. Avoid her.
SO BAD..........i've had some bad teachers in my time, but she takes the cake. I'm even good in math, and i'm almost failing, because of the format of tests and her teaching style.
wtf is she talking about... thank God for classmates and textbooks
Fast pace, unclear methods, easily annoyed
It was a lot like a high school course. Very in depth explanation. I would suggest this class for anyone who isn't really a "math person" or for people who are and just need a refresher course.
I knew this stuff in HS...class is basically a repeat. Tests do not accurately assess knowledge or skills, and there is little attempt made at assistance when sought. Grade will not reflect my ability or knowledge and will be a major disadvantage for otherwise very high GPA.
Tests are unrealted to coursework!!!!!!!!!be careful and use your classmates!!!!!!!!!!!study your ass off!!!!!!!!!
Scribbled out tests have nothing to do with what happens in class. Even if you knew math b4 you get to this class, you will be so confused by the time it ends that it is mostly a worthless experience.
Not very helpful but extremely easy! Never responds to emails and is impossible to meet with but the tests are not very hard. An easy A if you have had precal before
Terrible teacher, confuses you on every single thing you learn. Webassigns you have for homework never go on the tests. Her vague examples only thing you are ever tested on.
Nice teacher but makes the material way more confusing than it is. If you've never taken pre cal before don't let her be your first.
Easy EASY class if you have had precalc before. TA takes attendance everyday and lab attendance counts too. Class is SOOO boring if you already know whats going on. good class to do other work in.
Let me just start off by saying that I am just pissed that the future students have a chance to get this teach. DO NOT TAKE her courses unless you have already taken the course in the past. The TA teaches a better lesson in lab than the teacher does for regular class. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES PERIOD. Enjoy state
Terrible Teacher! I wish I checked this out before getting her. She doesnt explain anything. She makes things more difficult then they really are. They TA should have taught the class. I seriously think she thought this was a joke...to watch students fail!!!
HORRIBLE TEACHER STAY AWAY AT ALL COST!!!!!! I HAD TAKEN PRE-CALC IN HIGH SCHOOL AND HAD AN A+ IN IT I GOT TO HER CLASS AND HER TEACHING METHOD DID NOT MAKE ANY SENSE. HER TESTS SUCKED IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE HOMEWORK ONLY ON THE STUPID VAGUE EXAMPLES SHE GAVE IN CLASS.
terrible teacher. never answers emails, doesnt explain homework. basically gets the TAs to teach for her in the labs. Avoid her at all costs if you dont want your GPA ruined
Bad teacher
She is absolutely horrible. She will go over pages of notes and then realize shes telling the wrong thing and makes everyone start over. so that takes up more time, which prevents her from teaching us important stuff. she acts like she has no idea what she has talking about and constantly makes mistakes, which is very confusing when taking notes.
Brenda Burns-Williams is NOT a BAD teacher... she just teaches us the information required as if we already know it. Homework almost every other night on webassign, takes me forever, and her tests aren't the hardest but. AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS! If I had checked into my math teacher I probably wouldn't be doing as poorly in the class.
She's nice, looks good, and easy. She does not usually curve tests but does so if most of the class does badly on them. She does not emphasize important things enough, but she does provide a few simple proofs here and there to help with knowing why things are the way they are as you do the problems. Again on the looks, she's gorgeous.
I have not yet taken the class, but seeing the previous ratings are all from students WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH PRE-CAL, I can not yet make an accurate guess on her teaching style. (Just a little thought for anyone having her for calc next semester).
This professor was horrible!!!! She was scatterbrained during class and was unable to follow her own notes. She would write a whole page of notes and then would realize that the notes were not only wrong but in most cases they would be the notes for another class. She is unable to teach calculus because she doesn?t understand the information and ca
I failed the final, never did good on a test. She's not at all helpful really.
Pre Cal is a hard subject, and she doesn't make it any easier. Hard to stay awake in class, hard to follow her notes, and tests were hard.
This teacher is AWFUL! I took her pre cal class online and I am doing horrible. I wish I had looked her up before taking the class. The notes are not helpful on the homework and she doesn't give examples relevant to the homework or the tests. The text is optional and the tests are hard. If you are not great at math, do not take her class.
Appears to think online course means she doesn't need to teach. No office hours, no test reviews, no answer key to tests, no response to e-mails or requests for help. Tests constructed so that missing 1 item may cost 25 - 30 points because 1 question builds on another. Easily the worst professor I've ever had.
Horrible teacher. Took an online course with her, and I came out of the class knowing about the same as when I went in. Was NEVER online and NEVER responded to emails, or questions. Save your $1000+ for something else.
Dr. Burns-Williams is the best teacher I've ever had in every conceivable way at every conceivable level. EVER. She's a goddess. The rest of you need to study and stop blaming her for your mediocre work. And don't complain when she gets confused in her own notes. She's cute when she does that and so is her awesome hair. Stoked for MA 225 this fall!
DO NOT TAKE HER 2 HOUR CLASS. I nearly died everyday. She took a very long amount of time to get started each day, took too long to do example problems, gave breaks that were too long (when we could have just ended early) and she was 20 minutes late to class on our first test. She does allow you to bring a notecard on tests and was a fair grader.
WORST TEACHER EVER. she was 20 min late to our final. she is the worst
While the subject material is pretty difficult, her tests used only the most basic examples. I did not really learn much in the class, but she lets you use notecards on the tests which help out tremendously. She also is very generous with extra credit.
She often didn't know what she was talking about. Allowed TA to grade and when i went over them during her office hours she said she would have given me higher grades if she had graded them, but didn't change them.
Worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. She has no idea what she's doing, students constantly correct her, and she's late to class. Even if you're good at math and/or have had Calc 2 before, YOU WILL STRUGGLE. It's also extremely boring. Avoid at all costs!
Dr. Burns-Williams is amazing. I've always had this opinion, since my first semester with her. She's nice, clear, helpful, fair, and an absolute pleasure to listen to. The majority of these comments are by students who want to be spoonfed. Take her if you're serious about learning. She does an excellent job showing the beauty of mathematics.
She is a really lenient professor who is straightforward with the notes and the exams. She lets you use a notecard on the exams so as long as you go to class and take down the notes you should be fine. She was a bad professor in the past but she is becoming more experiened now and is wonderful. Highly recommend this prof.
I took MA 225 with her in Fall 2012. She presents herself clearly and the tests are easy. I think she should improve her plans for lesson and should not dismiss too early in a 50-min class.
She always showed up 10 minutes late to every class. She copies the examples straight from the book, which makes the book useless. She always makes mistakes, she'd get half way through a two page problem and realize she made a mistake. Her tests are made up of obscure problems we only half did once. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
I really enjoyed having her as a teacher. Straight forward notes and examples that are easily understood. Her tests also closely reflect the material gone over in class.
SO she is definitely not the best teacher because she shows up late occasionally and gets lost on problems sometimes but she gives you a ton of worked out solutions to help you understand further than the class examples through the website & gives you a note card worth of your own hand written notes for each test. Not a gimme class but not the best
Not great at explaining things clearly, I had to use old notes a lot.
Her lectures are straight from the book, she makes a lot of silly mistakes, and her class is generally boring... However, if you can get past those short comings, her tests are easy and she seems to be a really nice person.
Dr. Burns was in my opinion a great professor. I took this class online due to having a high school calculus background. I got a B in AP, but an A+ in this course. She does not throw any surprises on the tests and does give partial credit. If you have a calc background her course will be easy. I feel extremely prepared for 231 thanks to Dr. Burns.
She was not a very good professor at all. I had a lot of trouble understanding the material and had to do a lot on my own. When I went to her for help, she did not seem to care. Her tests are pretty easy for not understanding the material, but I do not recommend her.
She explains the material very well. Her tests are challenging but not impossible, plus she gives partial credit as well as opportunities for bonus points. My only complaint is that she's not very flexible with office hours. When I had her it was the hour right after the class and I had another class during that same time.
She made a lot of mistakes. It was hard to follow her. She seems like a really nice person, but I didn't learn anything in the class. She allows one note card for each test and then three for the final. They're really the only way I passed. Her texts weren't anything unexpected
She's a nice lady, very average teacher. I feel that if you put the slightest bit of effort to understand the material, you'll end up with a B. If you put in normal effort, probably looking at an A. Sometimes has trouble conveying certain topics, but overall, there are worst teachers. She's very nice and helpful at least in my experience.
I guess she thinks that she does not have to teach if the class is online.Did not reply to emails and questions.Gave test grades back extremely late.Did not find out we couldn't use graphing calculators until test day. This was not included in syllabus.Note cards also not allowed for tests. No bonus points either.Overall, very confusing professor.
She never replied to a single email or made an effort to communicate. I taught myself most of the material because she posts pictures of notes from the textbook and that's all you get. The only think I found helpful was her videos she posted with some lessons. Also, she takes over a month to grade tests. She also doesn't let you use a graphing calc
She makes a lot of small mistakes and sometimes get off topic but overall she was a great teacher. She made everything very understandable and her test were easy since they were basically the same as the practice tests she has on moodle. I never got to use a note card or anything but you won't need one. She is not trying to trick you. Take her!!
I'm a math-minded person and took this class online, only to find my grade really struggling. She makes small, confusing mistakes during class and on practice test keys. She takes off a lot of points for small mistakes on tests and makes test problems worth too many points, so one wrong answer and your grade really suffers. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
The homework has almost no correlation to the tests, making it pretty much useless. You will get so frustrated over a problem that has nothing to do with what you actually need to know. The tests only have a few problems worth upwards of ten points each, so you miss one or two and you've failed. Only take this if it's a required math for you.
So easy. She uses the absolute easiest problems for her tests. My lowest test grade was 84. If you have to take Calc 2, take Brenda Burns. Super helpful. Office hours are extremely useful if you need them. You get a note card for test 3,4, and the final. If you took Calc 1 at ncsu, this should be a breeze. If not, you'll need to go to class.
Great professor! Highly recommend for MA 241. Practice tests are near identical to her actual tests. She does not try to trick you or mess you up. She tells you in class what content will be on your test. Got a B- in MA 141 and now looking at A+ in this class with minimal studying.
This class was great. She explained all the material very well, and if I didn't understand something she was a lot of help during her office hours as well. Also, she posts practice tests that are very similar to the real ones, which is super helpful, and her tests aren't difficult if you understand the material.
I took her course online and she was not very helpful in contacting me back and if she ever did it was short and very sarcastic remarks. Her tests are very difficult. Her "textbook" was online and it was not detailed enough to teach me the material.
she was actually quite easy. minimal homework. not only that, but the homework was basically a golden ticket to doing well on the test. it seems like most people who struggled didnt do their homework consistently. i did about 75% of the homework and still managed an A+ (due to rubric format.) she is scatterbrained and forgetful, but supremely nice!
Her syllabus is horrible as there is not pacing guide. Also, did not find out we couldn't use a graphing calculator until the day before the exam. She took over a week to respond to e-mails. The lecture videos were fine. The homework helps a little. Definitely look at the practice tests as they are similar to the actual tests.
Took this class online for Math credit. Homework is incredibly difficult and has next to nothing to do with the tests. Some of the tests are exactly like "sample tests" simply with different numbers, which makes those easy. Other tests have information that wasn't learned yet, or info not covered by her self-written "textbook." Do not take.
Hardly ever responds to emails in a reasonable time. Didn't respond to emails that required a response on more than one occasion, frequently had to send the same email 2 or 3 times after not hearing back for 7+ days. Rarely available to meet for office hours.
Not sure why the reviews are so bad, but my experience taking her class was great! Being that I had taken Calc I before at comm. college & could not pass it to save my life I was super anxious. Her many examples& problems from practice tests really helped with concepts; an A is more than obtainable if you work for it;pulled a 99 on the last test!
She is really nice and caring, and when she gets excited about a topic she goes off on funny tangents. I wish that there was more homework, only 10 problems due the entire semester. Annoying all-or-nothing quizzes every Wednesday on definitions. Exams were a breeze. Lecture was pretty good, but she moves slowly and dumbs things down too much.
Her lecture style in MA131 is great and really helps students learn the material. She really cares about her students and gives plenty of example questions that are similar to the tests. Doesn't curve but gives you plenty of chances for extra credit points ( Advice: Attend her class everyday. Even though attendance is not mandatory- she notices).
tests and homework don't correlate with each other, or with the taught material. format for online class is disorganized as things change per semester and she won't tell you, i.e different # of tests, lecture correlation, etc. Will not respond to emails until the day before the test at the earliest.
Brenda makes so many mistakes during the lecture that your notes look like a game of tic-tac-toe. Shes very hard to follow and LOVES to cover her notes with her freshly manicured nails. Her pace is incredibly varied, she goes way to fast on the hard stuff and way to slow on the stuff you should already know. Pls do not take her.
Tests are super easy and she gives minimal homework. She's super caring and gives lots of extra credit. Vocab quizzes every Wednesday but they aren't hard.
I took the online version of this class. Brenda seems like a very nice woman, but did not give proper care to online students. Rarely replied to emails until day of test, messes up during lecture several times, and even gave in class students quizzes which online never received. Clearly has more care for in class and should never teach online again
Professor Burns is a very caring instructor. She rarely makes mistakes and always seems like she wants her students to do well. It is always clear what is on her tests, and if you pay attention and study just enough, you will get an A. She explains things clearly and is open for questions if you don't quite understand. Take her class!!!!
The professor has no care for online students. We had unorganized online lectures to base our knowledge off. The amount of homework is ridiculous. 4 tests and homework is the grading criteria. The grader is strict and gives little room for credit. Do not take her!!
Dr. Burns-Williams is a no-go for Calculus II. She cancelled multiple classes (but still required homework) and her teaching style was boring and often slow. Oftentimes, lectures did not cover everything she claimed they would cover. Reading the book helps you understand the material better than her lectures. Tests were fine but tricky.
Professor Burns-Williams teaches a difficult class, if you are not a math person, it is very challenging. She however is a wonderful professor who will help you succeed, she tries hard to make sure students understand the information and she understands when students have their own difficulties outside of class and helps work around them.
Dr. Burns is a great calc teacher and makes online learning easy. Her class isn't time consuming and normally just one homework assignment a week. Her tests are clear as long as you pay attention to the lectures.
We have 4 tests and they are really easy (easier than our homework). She replies email quick. She is very caring and nice to students. We were able to get extra points for our first 2 tests. We normally have homework at least once a week; they are pretty easy if you keep with your lectures. If you can take her, please take her she is the best!
not sure why the ratings are so low but Dr. Burns is really nice. The material is clear and setup of the class is very easy to navigate. The lectures are from another calc teacher who is amazing at explaining problems. She always helps with homework problems and is very understanding of technology and covid related issues.
The class isn't over yet, but I'm sick of this. We haven't gotten our grades back from the last 2 exams until literally the day before the next exam. It should not take over 2 weeks to grade 5 questions. I have also never even seen this professor, since the lecture videos we watch are of someone else. Does she exist? Who knows - You teach yourself.
Williams is the sweetest, most caring professor out there. I took 241 asynch, so we watched the Kurtz's lectures (she is fantastic as well), but I went to office hours a lot and always got my questions answered. Williams is so understanding. genuinely cares about her students, and is always cracking jokes. LOVE THIS WOMAN!!
Dr. Burns-Williams has been a great professor! Tests are generally reasonable if you review the practice tests and other class examples. IMPORTANT: Some say they never see her or problem sessions aren't helpful (False). For recitation days, some sections have Dr. B (very helpful) and other students have TA's (I have heard they are not helpful).
I dropped her class four weeks into the semester. Hers is the honors section for geniuses (aka math majors) and I was way behind everyone else. In recitation she went so fast I felt like my brain was being dragged underwater and I spent about 6 hours a day on homework. Plus, she does not give you the textbook. There's no textbook. Don't take her.
Graded exams super slow - TA problem sessions were horrible - Never saw the professor b/c lectures were from another person - Tests very easy and similar to the practice tests - I'm not amazing at math, but did fine in her class because it was easy to follow - Lots of homework, but that's expected - Easy class, but didn't learn from her directly
Not the best MA241 professor but not the worst. Grade is primarily composed of the four tests which can either be really difficult or really hard. Tests are never curved. Tests are normally 4 or 5 questions (free-response). WebAssigns are difficult but don't count for much. Classes are all lectures and she does a decent job at explaining concepts.
You go over everything you need during lecture and recitation; however all the webassign questions feel like "stretch questions". If you ask either the prof or the TAs for help, they'll solve a very similar problem to show you the process. Comparatively, the tests were mind-numbingly easy. Do plenty of practice problems and get an easy A.
Dr. Burns is a silly professor and fairly energetic. However, she seems to not care about the course at times, and is sometimes dismissive of questions asked in class. Grading is slow, and grades don't go in Moodle. However, she isn't too harsh on grading exams. She gave bonus points for each day an exam was late being returned to the class.
Dr. Burns is getting a lot of undeserved bad reviews on here. She is a good overall professor. She explains the content well and organized. You know exactly what will be on every test and even have sample tests that are extremely similar. If you put in the effort and study for the tests, they are not that hard.
Dr. Burns was super sweet and funny. Her lectures were great, she gave pretty good examples for the 50 minute classes. Tests were quick and relatively easy, no quizzes. Homework was more difficult than exams, but she extended the deadline for those often. I did not like recitations personally. TAs were rarely given content to go over and winged it.
Dr. Burns is super sweet and she cares a lot about her students. Her tests were very fair and the lectures were great! She never had to "dumb anything down" because her explanations were always so clear No curving and she gives SMALL bonus point opportunities (extra-credit is very rare w/ her). Keep up with lectures, pay attention & you'll be fine
Dr. Burns was a good professor; her exams were fair and easy as long as you go over the homework and notes. I found that it is mainly the TA that makes or breaks your exam grades... but that being said, you can always ask her to re-grade your exams :) overall she's a great professor and if you can, you should definitely take her:))
Shes so awesome. Dr. Burns is so excited to teach in class and her explanations of concepts are phenomenal. Calc II I've heard is always a horror story, but with her, it was actually pretty enjoyable. Yes I said enjoyable. A must if you can for MA241!
Dr. Burns is a wonderful professor and always seemed happy and excited to teach despite being an 8:30am class. Her lectures are recorded and all homework is through WebAssign. Tests are relatively simple if you read the textbook examples and complete the practice exams. The practice exam questions and format are very similar to the unit exam.
Overall she was a great teacher, you can tell she cares about her students. Her teaching style is easy to follow, and the tests are exactly what you prepare for when you take the practice exams. It is a tough course however, and if you do not apply yourself then don't expect to pass, but if you do try, proff burns makes it more than attainable.
Although she left half way through the semester she did a great job at helping everyone understand the materials. Tests were similar to the many practice tests she gave and she was very lenient on the test grading.
Her lectures are good, as she goes through example problems explaining what she is doing and why. Sometimes she does not state the formula she is using in its general form, although the textbook provides that. There are a lot more tests than other MA241 professors, but the practice tests are very useful. Also partial credit.
If you come in person she will do her best to accommodate any issues and answer questions. In my experience, the Webassign homework was much harder than actual tests and the TA often does questions during recitation. She gives sample tests which are almost copies of the 4 tests, save one test where there was a surprise question nobody studied.
Dr. Burns is awesome. Her lectures were pretty straightforward and lighthearted, I would say to review those problems specifically before her tests. WebAssign isn't really a good measure for her tests, but great for practice. Recitations were good to go over sections in depth. She's very friendly so definitely ask her questions if need be!
Lecture heavy, but lectures are not useful. Attendance is not required. She is about to retire, and there is a lack of ambition/care for the education being given. She is a generous grader, and overall just because she did not care for the class, made it quite difficult for me as a student to care.
MA 242 with Dr. Burns was manageable. She was very thorough in lecture and explained things at a manageable pace. TAs were much less useful in recitation than Dr. Burns. I'm not sure why the negative reviews claim she doesn't care, I certainly got the notion that she was willing to work with students to help their understanding.
Professor Burns' lectures are straightforward and engaging. While the course is challenging, she provides plenty of practice tests that are very helpful for preparing. unstuck AI was a great study tool along with the other resources. Overall, a tough but rewarding class with a generous grader.
