Have to go to class. Her tests are 95% of the notes taken in class. She uses an over-head projector for her notes and all you have to do is copy what she puts up. She doesn't have much class discussion, but she gets it done. I had her for Admin. of Justice and her class was the same. Made A's HOT!!
Easy teacher, go to class and make an A
Her class is so fun. I have met so many different people because of the class. I like the way that tough issues are discussed, but everyone respects one another's opinions and differences.
Very fun class. She is an awesome teacher and values everyones opinion. Absolutely take her if you can. Classes consist of discussion/lecture, no note taking is required for an A.
she doesnt grade fair
She is a really awesome teacher! Even though I was interested in the class to begin with, she made it fun and interesting!
She has a lot of energy and respects everyone and demands that you be respectful to her and others. She has strict rules for manners - don't text message or answer your cell. Fun class - take all you can from her. She enjoys her job.
Doesn't lecture. a lot of classtime is spent debating. If you have strong moral beliefs be prepared to be offended. A lot of emphasis on tolerance, less on worldwide social problems. Couldn't tell you what I learned, only that I'm glad I fulfilled the prereq for other soc classes I want to take.
Very good teacher. She goes through the book in order and gives very good notes. The class is fun b/c you get to debate about issues (just don't interrupt her). I hardly read the book and made a B. We even had a deaf guest speaker come in and it was great.
Horrible. Does not teach class. Says that all opinions are ok, then slams your opinion and tells you that you are wrong. Presents false data and subits false items as facts. Horrble.
Professor Chappell is really a great teacher. Her teaching style relies mostly on taking good notes and overheads. But the thing that stands out most is that she will stay after class and talk with you about issues and opinions that you might take from the lectures. Sociology is sometimes tricky, but this class clears it up.
She is very open and her class is fun. If you get offended it is because you are closed minded and not able to see other sides or you have issues you have not dealt with. She is strict about her rules but it is pretty easy.
She is really easy for Intro. to Sociology. You don't need your book because all of her tests come from the overhead. she gives great reviews too.
I like her style because she's not really much on lecturing. She's more about letting the students debate out certain issues. The study material she gives before the test is verbatim of what's really on the test.
She is a cool teacher, i slept through the final and she let me come in a make it up. Im not sure how many professors would let you do that, but she understands situations that students are put in and is very understanding.
She's very interesting and fun to look at.
AWESOME! we had an extra credit to go to a drag show haha.
She is an awesome professor who is very sweet and helpful. She has funny comments, especially ones that include her life. I would recommend her-- actually, I already have.
Loved her! She made me want to be a soc. major just to take her again! This is my all time favorite class, so much fun with in class debates, and her tests are extremely fair
Awesome instructor. I've taken her twice now, even took an 8:00am class just to get her. Very smart and sassy. She keeps her classes interesting and fun. She encourges you to look at things from a new perspective. You can discuss anything with her and she's not offended. Very open and liberated. Highly recommend her, especially if you're prude
I'm surprised to see so many positive comments. She's weird and rambles a bit. Maybe a lil 2 free-spirited? No homework though. Easy class. Its really only her personality that I didnt like about the class. Shes a bit ditzy as well. I wouldnt take her again just bc of the annoyance and how she relates everthing to sex. But she's fairly easy.

Awesome professor who cares about her students. She loves to have class discussions to make the class more interesting. She makes you think outside the box, and she is truly helpful. I definitely recommend her... unless you have a closed mind.
wow she says one thing but does another. Counts for attendance! her papers are easy and her tests are too if you read the chapters. but she is not a good teacher. she is really out there
No Comments
She rambles alot. She counts for attendance I think because that is the only way any one would ever show up to her class. interesting matierial but the rambling gets annoying. Very very easy though!
She is very great teacher!I reallu recomend her class!! I f you reat text book, you can get good gread.
I definitely recommend this teacher she is awesome...you have an attendances policy...but why not you know...why not go to a class you pay for...anyhoo...if you write down the notes that is on the overhead...automatic A on the test...so do that!
bad at teaching it
She makes class fun and interesting. Everything she puts up on the overhead is word for word out of the book, so all you need is a hi liter and your book. She is an admirable lady who is very knowledgeable of sociology and everything else. It was interesting to hear her thoughts and opinions on many matters, I learned a lot.
Professor Chappell is a really good professor. She lets you thik about things in your own way and intelligently discusses them with you. A lot of my class periods in her class, we were all just discussing the topic that we were on. If you actually look at the study guide she gives you, it's an easy A! I recommend her to anyone.
She knows her stuff, you have to read and do the work but you can make an A and will learn something too. Her attendance policy is a little strict but class is interesting so it’s not too bad to attend. Seems nice and genuine and not too bad to look at either.
She has been one of my favorite teachers. The review she gives out is exactly for the test. I love the class discussions; she doesn't judge your opinion. Please take her!

very nice, SUPER UPBEAT!! i want what shes on!! very willing to help with anything you need!
She is nice and friendly, presentation is required. Too many tests, and confusing. She spends much of the class time with student's presentaion discussion, and may 10 minute lecture like scanning. Then high expectation on tests and tricky.Just read book. I am senior and experienced with many teachers'styles. She is unfair,Class avarage very low.
I would not take her for this class. Not a very good professor at all. I showed up to every class and tried my best on the tests, which were pretty hard tests and i did all my assignments and she still didnt give me a good grade. This is the first and last class i will take a with her.
She is a man hater. Very bitter about divorce and takes it out on her male students. I learned nothing in her class, exept for what i read on my own.
she is an amazing woman!!!! loved her class. class discussions made time fly by. i would take another class with her for sure!
She is a great teacher. She is very clear as far as what she expects of her students. I went to class, did my homework, studied for the tests, and made an A. One word of advice....participate in discussion and dont be so closed minded and different issues and you should get a long with her.
I took Dr. Chappell for Minorities in American Society, and absolutely could NOT stand her! She is one of those really annoying teachers that takes attendance (only 3 absences allowed) and then reads directly from a powerpoint that she posts online the entire class period. I have news for everyone..if you can't teach, don't do it, and definitely do
What is wrong with some of these people - she truly likes people and is great. Test: little hard but managable - presentation sucks but also managable. Great class - learned a lot!!Take her for everything.
If you fail its bc you are stupid! Dr. Chappell is the fairest professor I have ever had - had to study, give a presentation but no paper. Go to class and pay attention - she gives you test answers in her lecture.
Don't listen to these bitter people - I am taking her now for the 3rd class and love her -so do all my friends. I recommend her to everyone. You will learn a lot and have fun at the same time. I have never seen someone who is ALWAYS to upbeat. VERY helpful.
I took her for minorities. He is very strict on the attendance. Her tests are hard, and the material is PARTIALLY covered in the lectures. She is very annoying and not many people in the class liked her. Difficult to understand at times. I hated her and I do not recommend her.
Mrs. Chappelle is an awesome teacher. She is extremely strict on attendance, and if you have her for night class she will take roll multiple times throughout the night (but if you are any type of student this is not an issue). Her tests could not be easier. If you want to do well, record the lectures and study the review questions at the end!!!
Cold, detached instructor. Egocentric and, yet, oddly insecure in the classroom. Lectures lack flow and are a hodge-podge of random, often unrelated "factoids." Former high school teacher who greets students the first day with a list of DO NOTs. Was unable to regularly facilitate class discussion...and it's Human Sexuality class! Not recommended.
pretty good
Dr. chapppell is awsome!! I would recommend her for everything. You will learn alot.
I took her for Minorities and Human Sexuality in the same semester and enjoyed every bit of it. She's not hard and is very helpful. She gives you her powerpoint notes. But if you ever need an elective class...I recommend taking Hum Sex. You will not be bored.
I have taken her a few times and am glad I did. She knows what she is talking about and shares that knowledge with her classroom. She is easy to talk to and does her best to help students succeed. The class does require a little effort but is not bad at all. I highly recommend taking her.
Took her for minorities..pretty easy class if you study..reviews before test cover most material..read the power points and use your head and you'll be fine..does take attendance but you can miss 6 times..only 4 tests and a short presentation..does offer extra credit..recommend this class to anyone..learned a lot and got an A
Great teacher, I took her in the Spring of 09 for Minorities and she's really pretty fun. Is very fair. Also, she's got kind of a hotness about her.
She is literally the worst prof ive ever had.she hardly talks about the class subject she talks more about her life experiences than anything in the book. Her tests suck b/c what she talks bout in class and whats on the test are two different things plus no study guide to help whatsoever.im only writing this b/c people need to know how bad she is.
Not a very good teacher at all! She doesn't really teach just talks about her life and past and make awkward sexual jokes in class sometimes. If you're going to take this class you better be a bookworm, because she doesn't explain what's on the test in class. Just giving an honest review over the class.
I enjoyed Minorities. I think that she is an interesting professor. She compared things in the text to actual life. I did notice that all the younger students struggled a bit in this class and I chalked that up to lack of life experience. I studied for the text less than other test and I made an A. I would take this prof again.
She does teach the material that she tests although she talks about her own stories a lot in class. But her stories are just giving example of what's being taught. We barely used the textbook. I sold my book back because she told us that all of the tests would come from the power points she put online. And yes we went over the power points in class
I have learned more in the first week of class than I in a whole semester in other classes. She is fun and knows her stuff. I will take all her classes.
took human sexuality with her. wish i cud take more classes with her. Dr. chappell is great. seems the people who don't like her are the ones she challenged. LOVER HER!
Took her for minorities...hated every second of it. Shes such a ****. My boyfriends in the military so I was extremely offended when she spoke unkindly of our soldiers. She's an idiot and hasn't taught anything. Her tests are hard and she doesn't teach anything that's on them. I never want to take her again. Who hired her..if you can't teach DON'T. She's also really rude.
She would not give very much sympathy to STUDENT ATHLETES while on away trips for games. She wants her class to be you top proirity. She is pretty cute/sexy in a weird way! Minorities btw
I enjoyed her, but you pretty much have to be very liberal like me to enjoy her. Basic multiple choice tests and you have to do a powerpoint project.
Dr. Chappell is an interesting professor and her classes are some of the easiest I've taken at UCO. I plan to take her as much as possible.
Very knowledgeable in her field, also somewhat narcissistic...as are most beautiful, sexy, intelligent women. I would pay just to be in her presence! JDG
She is horrible!! Huge inflated ego. If you are smart and can think for yourself, she will hate you. She is not as good at lecturing as she thinks she is, but the class is an easy A. Sooo boring and hateful,
Has her own agenda and is rude. Does not value opinions that differ from hers. Easy class and will relate everything to GLBT. Shares her own life and Sunday group party too much. Huge ego and narcisistic.
I agree with the others, she is rude and all over the place. Treats students like children. Has a huge ego. Test are easy if you study but requires thinking. Make you do a presentation. Not impressed by her but she is impressed with herself. I only take her cause I have to. Also, old and not hot.
Dr. Chappell is very smart, pretty funny, and knowledgeable. I can't believe all the people saying she's rude and/or arrogant. She absolutely does not strike me that way and I've had her for several classes. Her classes are usually very easy and it sucks that attendance is mandatory. Also, do not buy the book, because you will never use it.
Dr. Chappell is interesting, not neccessarily in a good way though. She can be very rude, sort of like smiling at you as she puts you and/or your comment down. She isnt very organized and can seem very snotty sometimes. If I had a choice I wouldnt take her again.
Yes, she is rude and narcissistic . However, her views are hers and she is entitled to them. Her class is a great opportunity to learn how to deal with those whose opinions differ from your and succeed. Don't disagree with her and remain positive and you will do great.
She is very nice and helpful! She knows she is a hottie so people think she's rude... I thought it was cute!
She allows 6 free absences. She is very understanding. The test are super easy but sometimes she makes absolutely no sense in the way she words things. She gives a quiz after every chapter. She seems a little unorganized at times so you need to stay on top of your grade, assignments, etc. Interesting class!
She is very knowledgeable and knows a lot of interesting facts, but is very narcisistic in nature and does not accept differing views from her own. She loves to correct people, but if you learn to agree with everything she says you'll do fine. Easy class, we only had tests and one paper. Her classes are always interesting.
I had Chappell for Stratification and for Human Sexuality. She is beyond unorganized, but if you stick with her and ask for clarity she is easy to work with. The class was difficult, but not impossible. I earned an A in both courses
Dr. Chappell is amazing. If you need help she will be there for you. If you come to class and take notes her test are easy to study for. I will take her for everything I can.
Last semester Dr. Chappell was scattered but before that and now she is together-maybe a bad semester. I've had her for 4 classes enjoyed all of them. Learned a lot.
I found Dr. Chappell to be humble and kind- not stuck on herself. I got sick and she helped me throught the semester. She listens to studets-even the stupid stuff people say and is polite. Bc of her I appreciate sociiology.
I thought her exams were easy. I went to her office several times and she was always happy to help. looking foward to her summer class.
Dr. Chappell is an amazing teacher! She is super funny and very relaxed when it comes to teaching. Her tests are fairly easy and her papers are not hard. I would definitely recommend!
Dr. Chappell is a joy! She is funny & informative! She is open-minded & very helpful. I have thoroughly enjoyed this class, although it would have been nice if the class had gotten involved in discussions, but I guess most people are too timid to talk about sex. Loved her & this class! Plan to take as many of her classes as I can!
I wish I could take more classes with Dr. Chappell. Had her for strat, human sexuality, deviance... Learned so much - stuff you can use in your everyday life.
I've had her for 5 classes and loved all of them! You will learn a lot just going to class but to make an A ya gotta put in a little effort. There were people in her classes who didnt like her but they were allll jerks!!
Dr Chappel is so much fun! She explains everything in such detail and gives stories to help you understand. This was my favorite class to go to this semester! Its all lecture and out of the book. So you need to go to class, but it is so worth it!
I didn't like Prof. Embarrassed students in class for taking notes via tablet. Wld make comments such as such it was her class so she cld do what she wanted. Just didn't like her attitude.
Goes out of her way to help. Teaches outside of the box - incorporates lots of interesting info. Gotta study. She definitely doesn't like cell phones used in class. Will tell people to leave if they use them. I will take her for everything I can!
Pretty easy for an upper division course. Straightforward. Does have her quirks (seating chart, freaks out over phones) but overall she is nice and the tests are basic even if her lectures can be a tad scattershot.
Dr. Chappell was one of my favorite profs until this class - Deviance. I thought it would be great, but it turned out to be one of the most difficult classes I've taken yet. You use the book a lot, plus she has slides that you will also use. Attendance is mandatory. I barely got a B in the class, but I'm thankful I did. It was not what I expected.
She cared more about talking about her friends and trying to relate them to the subject than teaching the material in the book. When we finaly did get to book material she rushed through it all
LOVE HER!! She is one of the kindest fairest professors I know. If you take the time to go to her office she will take as much time as you need. You will learn cool stuff in her class too.
Interesting class. Friends recommended it and they were right. It wasn't what I expected and I told my friends about info she gave in class. funny facts. we think she would be a fun cougar.
Great prof. Really makes things interesting and she's really pretty hot.
She will tell you that you do NOT need the book, but all of the test questions are from the book. She does not make it clear what will even be on the test. She will embarrass students and make them feel dumb. Not a helpful teacher. I recommend NOT taking her if you want a good grade. I made it out with a B only because i did ALL the extra credit.
She will not help students. Will embarrass students. Wont say what will be on the tests. She will say NOT to get the book but the test questions are straight from the book. Would recommend NOT TAKING CHAPPELL.
Very informative professor she did not embarrass anyone and make sure that everyone could say what they wanted to say without being rude to one of the classmates. Not easy on tests you just have to do your work (read the book)_
I enjoyed her class very much. Like the group participation. Would like to have had study guides for test. Didn't use the book during class but she used it for test so read the chapters! she was very respectful to everyone. Like the videos she showed and life experiences.
She is a little scatterbrained but she means well. She gives a quiz after each chapter is over true or false ten questions. We had one writing assignment. Her tests are difficult, even if you study. I would recommend reading the book for tests, however her quizzes are from her power points. No group projects, Thank god!!
Everything you ever need to know is in the syllabus. You know exactly what to expect in every single one of her classes. She will lecture every day or show videos to prove a point but it will always keep your attention. You get the chance to talk about your own opinion but it is not mandatory.
I've had Chappell before for other sociology courses, but she was very scattered in this course. Got the impression she wasn't prepared for class lectures and mostly tried to relate to the topics by telling stories about her friends. She played the same videos she played in her other courses, of course her stories were the same. Test are difficult.
Dr. Chappell has a sense of humor of her own so many of her students don't like her. However, she is very knowledgeable about Human Sexuality. Basically, attend class, read the textbook to clarify her vagueness, there are quizzes after every completed chapter, lots of extra credit, interesting discussions. Bring printed powerpoint notes to class
I have had Dr. Chappell for 3 classes now and would take anything she taught. Going through some difficult times at home & she was the only prof who legitimately cared. V. funny and so smart. Great stories. Must read all texts and utilize PP's. Attendance required but she will work with you. Ban on cell phones but I think that's a good thing.
Don't have side conversations, she will call you out! At first I found this class an easy "A" but over the semester I found it to be more sociologically based, quite interesting.
Students who don't like her are closed-minded and not willing to work. I've had her for 4 classes and wish I could take more. She is a wonderful professor - hard worker!!
Maybe she's better in her upper division classes, but this one was definitely a blow off. I didn't read the book at all and got an A while feeling like I learned nothing. She's not very articulate when it comes to verbal skills and there is misinformation of term definition in her lecture. Not "value-neutral" teaching approach either.
Dr. Chappell lectures at a high school level and makes her tests at the masters level. You will be ok if you read everything, take good notes and laugh at her very lame jokes. And for goodness sake, call her Dr. Chappell and stay off your phones!! Very boring text as well.
I have taken her for everything. She teaches outside the box and you learn so much more than textbook stuff. love her
Easy 'A' course. This might be a good class if you know absolutely nothing about the subject going into it. It's frustrating to not learn anything in a course. Wrong info often taught (powerpoints from 2004!) I didn't use the book and passed all tests. The only reason I attended was because she would tell you when a quiz would be.
In all honesty, she's not a very good professor. Unorganized. She forgot to bring our exams on exam day twice in one semester
She is all over the place and gets side tracked very easily. She spoke a lot of about her personal life and referred to things in a sexual manner, like "someone be on top or bottom or hit it and quit it". Very unprofessional for someone with a PHD. No cell phones in class and you MUST refer to her as DR. Chappell or she'll try to embarrass you.
I enjoyed Stratification very much. There were 4 tests and 2 presentations. Make sure you read the assigned articles. Dr. Chappell also gave extra credit towards the end of the semester. Study and read the text and Powerpoints and you will do just fine.
Chappell is incredibly unprepared. All of her PowerPoints are from at least 5 years ago, so none of the information is current. She stresses in the beginning of the class that the textbook is required, but you only use it for one small article. Tests and presentations are easy A's.
Ehh.. she'll do.
She's okay. Very open as one should be when entering a human sexuality class but the information provided is out of date, she says she does it to save us money but it would be nice to have up to date statistics. Overall not the worst professor
When it comes to attendance or assignments she isn't the kind of professor who is understanding. She doesnt care about students grades so she isn't helpful. She has a good sense of humor and lectures can be interesting but her exams aren't completely in line with exams.
Eh. She deducts points from your overall grade for missing class which trust me wanting to even show up is a task in itself. Classes arnt difficult just extremely boring. Im not taking a class I really wanted to because she will be teaching it. Dont get me wrong shes nice but just over her after the 3rd class with her as she teaches most requir
Her classes are required but you wont learn anything in them. She makes a lot of rude comments and I try to avoid talking to her one on one for that reason. If you want a good grade, laugh at her jokes.
I had her for human sexuality and I absolutely love this professor so much. She tells entertaining stories during the lectures to make them more engaging and it helps you remember the information more. She encourages group discussion. The exams are easy as long as you attend lecture and go over the powerpoints. She is genuinely a sweet person.
I learned so much from her. Dr. Chappell knows her stuff and explains it so everyone understands. She is respectful to everyone, even the people who are jerks.
Dr. Chappell is so much fun. I've had her for several classes and wish I could take more with her. I'm not a SOC major but Dr. Chappell makes it fun and shows you how this applies to everyday life.
Dr. Chappell goes above and beyond in ways her students never know. She offers tutoring for students whose first language isn't English. She spent time helping me figure out how to use power point and get in d2l. She has so much passion for her subject and people. She takes students with her at places she volunteers at.
Dr. Chappell is literally the sweetest professor at UCO. It might take you a bit to get used to her humor, but she really tries hard to make you feel welcome in her class. Her lectures are informative, so just follow the powerpoints and youll do great!
Dr. Chappell has been an amazing professor. Shes extremely caring for all of her students and shows it. Shes very passionate about what she teaches and has been a great professor! The tests are mostly from the powerpoints and she doesnt give homework. Textbook is optional, but you can get an A without it.
Classes in this course were disorganized and the material tended to be out dated. Attendance is a grade.
She's pretty entertaining with lectures, and really informative. The only thing I didn't like about her class was there was very little points to get. There's usually 4 exams and a paper. I got a B but the lowest grade I got all semester was a 75.
If you have an issue just go talk to her. She is happy to work with you and help in any way she can.
Way disorganized. She'd show up with the wrong PowerPoint or be 15 minutes late and expect us to wait for her. She'd get behind on lectures so material got skipped, but then left it in the test. She lectures like she's talking to randos who just wandered in rather than 4000 level SOC majors--yeah, we know inequity exists, that's why were here?
Taking Dr. Chappell changed my life. She will help anyone who ask and she will go above and beyond. If you have issues with her it is YOU. She is freaking awesome!
She likes to derail her own lectures to go on about conspiracy theories for a good chunk of class, and then has to skip material to catch back up. Don't expect much instruction when it comes to group projects. She once forgot we had a test scheduled and pushed it back a week. Hated every minute of this class.
Dr. Chappell's lectures are all over the place. She acts like she doesn't know what she is teaching and reads straight from notes. She never let us know when she won't be there. Never knew what would be on the tests because she was all over the place.
I was initially really excited for this course, I do like Dr. Chappell but her lectures are all over the place and she fails to cover all of the material during class. Do not expect to have been taught all of the material that will be on the exams. She is a bit of a conspiracy theorist and all of her material is outdated.
She never tells us when she is going to be gone and always skips out on test day. During lectures she will look at here own notes (that's ok) but then she'll look up and say "ok, yeah" then move on without telling us what to know about it. She even told us that she threw the lesson plan out of the window because she didn't like it.
Lets start out by saying that if you don't normally teach a class, don't tell your students about it once a week. we talked about rape for at least 10 classes, and got way behind schedule to the point we won't finish the material. Very frustrating seeing as I was excited about this class. If you can avoid taking her for this class, do it.
This is by far the worse professor I have ever taken at uco. She is so outdated and very unorganized. Half the material on exams we were not told to study for. All the assignments are rushed and give no explanation on how they should be done. I have never rated a professor before but I want to warn those who take her.
Lecture heavy is no joke. Shes a bit problematic. If you are well versed in stereotypes from around 2012 to 2016 then you will pass this class with flying colors, otherwise you will find her annoying. She is a kind person but she needs to update her material.
Dr. Chappell is one of the nicest people ever however, that does not translate to her teaching. Her lectures were not organized and we often got off topic for half the class period. I enjoyed class because it hilarious but I did not learn. The quizzes and exams nothing like the lectures and I did terrible on them. She really tried her best though.
If you are a sensitive person and can't move past certain comments, Dr. Chappell is not for you. I don't think she does it intentionally but she does make comments that may be controversial. Her lectures were easy, tests were all pretty simple but not enough to get a perfect score, her assignments are self explanatory and graded easy.
JUST STOP. DO NOT TAKE HER. Shes so nice but will totally flip if anyone even looks like they are browsing the internet. She did that so many times. There are no homework, but there are reaction papers and tests. FOR MY CLASS THE SYLLABUS SAYS THAT THERE WILL BE 4 TESTS SHE ONLY GAVE US ONE AND A FINAL. SHE EFFED UP EVERYTHING IT IS SO SAD.
Dr. Chappell is so scatter-brained and disorganized. The information/ideas she shares are often outdated even though she works in the ever-evolving field of sociology. The only redeeming quality of this class is that the assignments are easy and Dr. Chappell is a light grader.
Dr. Chappell is flexible and kind. I was struggling with health issues and she went above and beyond to help. She breaks up her lectures with short videos and class activities. The students who griped about her in class were jerks and lazy. Just do your work and you will learn a lot and make a good grade.
failed me for missing two assignments that I never got notified for that she said she sent. also when I emailed her for questions, she said she didn't see me on her list. didn't even know i was in her class! she talks over the time limit, is really disorganized, never responds to emails, piles all of these quizzes/exams on you at the last minute.
She does not bother replying to emails, and if she does.... be prepared to wait at least 4 to 5 days. She is so unorganized. She doesn't keep up with the assignments that need to be posted. It's stressful but other than that... just do the work, try not to let the disorganization get to you and you will get a good grade
Dr. Chappell is a great professor. Her lectures are interesting and she will make you think for yourself! She is very go with the flow, and is good at responding to emails. She has good office hours, and truly creates a safe space for students. If you are not feeling well, she is understanding. The HW is light and tests are pretty easy.
She is VERY all over the place. The first couple weeks are very odd but after while you get used to it. Her methods are a bit outdated as well as her views on certain issues but she always is open for discussion and really creates a safe environment for her students. It's better to go to her during her office hours than trying to send her an email.
It's true that she seems odd but you get used to it. Assignments will sometimes be posted without warning so it's your responsibility to check. If this is not an issue for you, though, I recommend her intro to soc class. 3 multiple choice exams with a noncumulative final, quizzes, and attendance. Be active in class to get on her good side!
Do NOT take her. Doesn't upload assignment grades until months pass, won't respond to emails, assigns stuff at the last minute, unorganized, & will try to embarrass students on their laptops. Her syllabus is full of contradictory information. The class is a mess and will make you miserable. Not difficult but extremely annoying and you won't learn.
She can get chaotic but having her in office hrs is the way to go if you start to fall behind. I missed 5 days, and she worked w/me. Attendance is key, she posts all of the lecture powerpoints on D2L, but you will need to take some quick notes on what she uses to supplement the slides with in her lecture. Super sweet, honestly reminds me of my mom.
I took the 8-week summer course in Social Problems, so there was a ton of homework. Lots of assignments and papers, but the requirements for the papers weren't too crazy. She took forever to reply to emails, but is very flexible if you need extended deadlines for valid reasons, and seems empathetic. Gives good feedback.
incredibly opinionated and obviously biased. spoke on serious topics that were very out of her expertise.
Talks a lot but has good lectures. Passionate but biased. She is fun but does pick on students on their laptops and phones.
She gives you a module with an assignment for each. Her assignment doesn't have a rubric just says to answer the question and write a paragraph. Some assignments I made a 100 in and others literally a 50 because it didn't meet the academic paragraph criteria. Doesn't grade ever. Additional stuff in gradebook. Doesn't respond to emails.
This pro
Goes on a lot of very long tangents, repeats things, said she was part of a research group looking for the "truth" about vaccines
This careers in soc class was informative and helpful. The professor understood that this class didn't need to be so hard but rather to confirm that this is the major you want to pursue. 3-4 assignments, half a semester, 50 min lectures twice a week, good deal. Great class and my second time having this prof was great and worth time and money.
Professor Chappell has a unique teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be manageable. Attend lectures, complete assignments on time, and use study tools like Unstuck AI - this helped me stay on top of the material. Overall, an interesting but unorganized class.
She keeps track of when you go to the bathroom, and if you go too many times, she will count you absent. It is in the syllabus, and I think it is ridiculous. We are in college, not middle school, so why are we being told not to go to the bathroom? I am not going to get a doctor's note to not be counted absent. She also goes on off-topic tangents.
The only people who say that her class is good and that they enjoyed it are people that agree with her and she agrees with them. You wont be listened to or be able to exchange ideas in this class unless you agree with her views on things. She goes off on so many unnecessary tangents. Theres so many awful things that I cant fit in here.dont take her
Tests were exceptionally hard and over topics not specifically discussed in class. Professor does not allow bathroom breaks, unless you use an absence.
She was very sweet and made class interesting! Would take her again.
Assignment, quiz, and discussion for each chapter/module, and she provides a chapter overview, which is so helpful. Midterm and final and each have 75 questions. She is helpful and kind. I always love this professor. This is my third time having her. Her feedback is helpful. She gives interesting discussion topics. Has EC. I enjoyed this class.
