Professor valadez is an awsome teacther!!! I was afraid to take speech , so i put it off for years... Her class is so enjoyable, fun and relaxing. There is 5 speeches and 1 midterm and final.. She gives you a study guide for both... I tried to take another commb1 w someone else and they were hard so i dropped. Take Valadezs class and youll thank me
Way Too Many PROJECTS for a COMM Class!!Only thing I did was read read read in that class and she goes over the book line by line. I took B2 but the class was more like a Public Speaking class and Small Group Communication. Overall teacher needs to fix class but teacher is very friendly but doesnt understand that students have more than just 1Class
Way too many projects - unrealistic projects involving going into community to speak. Class ate up a lot of weekends trying to get presentations worked out. Would recommend a different instructor if you have to take more than just the speech class for the semester.
First day of class went over what is expected. As a student attending college attention is needed if you plan on passing the class. if you are going for anything other then to learn, then dont take the class. This teacher is clear on what she expects of her students it is up to us to make it happen. Structure is a good thing!
She was a very helpful prof. And cute too. She's smart and taking her class has made me change my major to Communications.
this professor was confusing, and always seemed confused. she would say "UM" often, showing a lack of confidence on her part. she read straight from the text which made class boring. i believe we had 3 presentations the last one being an hour and a half long. i do not recommend her TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!
She is very helpful and will work with you to become comfortable with public speaking. She knows how it is to be shy and nervous and will help you overcome it.
I took her for small group and that class was not easy, but she is only preparing you for the real world when it comes to working with people. I am now taking her for public speaking because I enjoy her teaching. She has good clarity and is very helpful. I do recomment her highly to anyone who is interested in taking a COMM class.
ms. valadez was very instrumental in me breaking out of my shell and finally being able to communicate infront of a audience as well as individually and for that she is and will always be my greatest mentor.
This course was very fun and easy. Very relaxed and the assignments were simple to understand. The course is conducted in a manner that helps you relax more in front of a crowed. She also creates a very fun atmosphere that makes you want to come to class. It’s very upbeat and enjoyable. I highly recommend taking this course with Brenda. :)
Brenda is so bubbly to cant help but be happy in her class too. She does a very good job creating a relaxed environment to help you do your speeches. I really enjoyed this class and her grading is not hard at all. She grades on effort which is really good for those individuals who are not as confident as others. I highly recommend her class.
Brenda is a very friendly woman. She details what's expected & sticks w/ it. Interest in the subject decreased as time passed, though. Admits she uses "um" much. Because of her use of the filler, she comes off as unsure and lacks in confidence - which I believe leads to the speaker to also lack confidence. Don't think I'd ever take her again.
Do NOT take this professor. For a communication teacher, she is confusing and lacks confidence. Class focus is mostly on sociology issues rather than communication. The class takes up so much time. Our group constantly had to meet with each other just to keep up with the workload.
Homework is usually unclear. Class is really easy. Book is not needed. She's clear but alittle informal. Pay attention. She'll mention due dates that are not in syllabus.
truthfully, I enrolled into this class cuz it was the only way out. YES the workload and expectancy is moderate to very high but with good reason. IT'S A UNIVERSITY PEOPLE, ACT LIKE IT! Helped through most of the pub. speaking fear through things I wished were never assigned but I gained from it and I LEARNED. She is an amazing prof. Apply yourself
I do NOT recommend Valadez. She's really nice, but that's about it. There's a lot of unorganization in the classroom and for a University class where we're just learning about the campus, the work load and content of the work was so irrelevant to the class. She rambles quite a bit for a comms prof. too. All in all, if you seek clarity, so no.
Brenda is very friendly, but she is not very helpful and her instructional help is confusing at best. When you have meetings with her she gives off a vibe like its bothersome that you are asking for help. I would never recommend her to anyone makes sense now why her class was damn near empty a towards the end of the semester.
I took her class in summer. To be honest no one was happy with her at beginning. Her instructions weren't clear. But she is a pretty easy grader and after first project people started liking her. If you do the work and have all the paperwork she requires it's pretty easy. Be prepared to spend a decent amount of time outside of class for projects.
4 speeches, after 2 speeches we used a class period to go over proper format for draft outlines. Unprepared. You turn in a rough draft, and then the final and do your speech, then later will receive your graded rough draft. Which makes it hard to properly correct your rough drafts.
I took her for public speaking and she is one of the best professors ever! If you want a class that challenges you and a professor that helps you take Valadez.
Not an easy A but worth taking. She will help you if you ask for help. Take her if you want to try something different.
She is a very nice professor but her lectures are too long and very vague, also her office hours weren't the best, two hours and only one day a week. She could have more enthusiasm for what she's supposed to teach
she was a very good professor. I would definitely take her again. she helps the students out and she is always a helpful person.
Professor Valadez is a chill professor. She doesn't expect much and she's really sweet. Lectures are so boring but it's worth sitting through them because she does not grade hard. Do every question in the workbook for credit.
DO NOT take her. She's absolutely terrible! She's rude to the students, she doesn't go over assignments in class because "it's on the syllabus". She acts like this is a university course and not just a comm. college GE requirement. If you do take her, make sure you complete the WHOLE WB or else she won't take it. Terrible Prof. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
AMAZING! She is a wonderful person. Learned a lot and overcame my fear of public speaking. Very nice and has lots of patience with disrespectful students.
Professor Valadez is a wonderful instructor. She is very caring for her students and is also tolerant of those students who struggle with the class or are generally disruptive when controversial topics are discussed. I highly suggest her.
Professor valadez is amazing and very inspiring. Before her class I literally had the worst stage fright. So heres what you needto pass: project yourself, understand that the workload is kind of a lot, and always ALWAYS assume that your speec draft is due becaus she not clear on that. When saying speeches, its better to be over time than under.
I would not take her again and I do not recommend her.
She comes to class late and unprepared. her speech topics are weird and require outside sources. She expects you to come to class having the chapter read and will briefly touch it. Her midterm and final she will ask questions about her personal life. there are a million other Comm B1 classes DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HER
I found this class to be very straight forward and the professor punctual and clear. There certainly are students who made the class difficult by being disruptive of others, but I think the professor handled those well. Overall it was a fun class and I recommend it for a good experience with public speaking.
She gives lectures that are insightful and right from the textbook. Show up, do the workbook, and you'll pass. Also she doesn't allow note cards for your speeches so you need to know key words for your speech or you'll get marked down. This class was a little bit of a drag but if you give speeches on something you love, it'll make it much more fun.
For a person such as myself that was nervous coming into this class, it was decent. First of all, she doesn't allow note cards when you're giving a speech, due to her past classes. The workbook required was long and took too much time. Also, she hardly ever gives feedback after the speeches were finished. Overall, she had her moments.
Great class. Just prepare and ask for clarification if you are confused. Overall I found the class helpful in getting me past being scared of talking in front of other people.
Great class experience, gives extra credit, topics are interesting and informative, could maybe be better about office hours but overall a great class, would take again
Locks the door if she gets there before you do, her workbook is unnecessary, doesnt allow questions to be asked during class, they have to be written on a little note and given to her later, if you can catch her after class.
Great class would take again!
She's incredibly strict with assignments, caring more about completion than content. She doesn't take questions during lecture, and gets upset if you ask a question without raising your hand. She went on a tangent about phone usage being linked to sexism, citing her anecdotal observations of male staff and their students. She definitely has issues.
Professor Valadez is great and helpful to students. She always provided feedback and responded to emails. Sometimes class deals with hard topics and she always makes sure everyone understands. Promotes lots of extra credit chances to improve your grade. Highly recommend.
She is rude and speaks down to students. Take another professor!
Enjoyed public speaking with this professor. Lots of extra credit opportunity to improve grade and pretty clear on instructions for assignments. She responds to emails unlike some professors and is pretty easy going.
She makes you do chapters and randomly collects them if she feels like it. Gives a lot of unnecessary work and grades heavily.
At first, I was scared when it came to presentations, but Professor Valadez helped break lectures down and is very specific with directions.
I would take her again she was really nice and helps you anyway she can.
I enjoyed the topics for speeches, and definitely got better at public speaking! Professor is great at giving feedback and does help and guide when you need more help.
This class is good because this helps in confidence is Acquired during the end of term of fall in class Yes
The teacher gave me some estar credit (work) and she help me a lot with that
This professor is really understanding and has a more modern way of teaching by making the assignments relevant. She is fun and funny and will try her best to make you succeed.
The way this professor helps you & influences you to do better is one amazing thing about her . She helps you do better on your next speech , if you didnt do so well on the one before .. shes opened to take any questions & answer them throughly for you !
She is nice she made me want to come class and have fun and learn at the same time
Shes really nice to the class and gets a long with you depending g if you behave. Shes not that strict when it comes to having homework perfect. The class climate was very nice overall.
If you take class seriously and want to improve your public speaking then take her class. You will improve and she helps you with your speeches. It's hard work because she grades to the point but it's worth it. We had a pot luck for the last day of class in order to get students to come to class.
Professor Valadez is enthusiastic when teaching and that is a wonderful trait as an educator.
She is an understanding professor when it comes to missing speeches due to emergencies. When asking her about the assignments she wont tell you shell make you check canvas despite her talking to you. Her class is more about doing the work in order to pass.
The teacher was really comprehensive and she help me a lot with my extra credit. She is a great teacher!
Professor Valdez is a great teacher
She is a very considerate person. She understands that we are not perfect and sometimes things do happen for example health issues. I really enjoyed the dynamic of this class. The workbook is required and if you do not do it you will get a bad grade in the class. Some of the speeches she requires the topic on a specific issue.
She is enthusiastic about teaching and that is a wonderful trait to have as an educator.
Very enthusiastic teacher but hard work
Tough grader, but does this to help better your education
This Class was fun just make sure you do your hw.
Professor Valadez is an awesome and helps you understand a lot of techniques about public speaking and as long as you show your effort she helps you pass the class
This was a very work busy class not hard just time consuming. This was a fun class despite all that. I really liked the speechs we gave just not the rubric on how to write one.
This was a great class because of the people and environment youre surrounded by. But, PLEASE remember to get the workbook hw done because those points matter and accumulate very quickly! also make sure to get to know your classmates before its too late, the semester goes by a lot faster than expected.
Shes respected, a culture sensitive teacher. Very encouraging and a lot of hard work so be ready but best class ever!
This class helps you with speeches and how to talk in front of people.
This class allowed me to branch out and make friends, which I never do. It allowed me to feel more comfortable with speaking in front of people and understand that confidence truly is key. The different presentation styles were also very great but you do have to make sure you attend these classes because there is a lot of work, if taking 1 day/week
Gives great feedback at what you need to do during your speeches. Helps you out whenever you have a question. As well as great lectures and examples on what you need to do in the class.
Interactive
She is a great teacher because she provides great feedback and helps her students to improve their speeches.
Professor Valadez is really good public speaking instructor! She educates everyone on every style of speaking! Gives plenty of chances to turn in work! Gives extra credit! Take advantage! Practice speech right when assignment is out! Available during office hours!
There are workbook pages that are very easy but take a long time
This class had a lot of opportunities to make up for your grade. The professor was very supportive and friendly. The speech topics were also very interesting and fun.
You were interactive with your students. You didnt choose favorites.
Workbook pages are easy but long.
Super great professor and is very caring I totally recommend her.
This class is a eye opener to the ones that arent about talking in public but its a different experience since you get so comfortable around the people in the class, do to the different types of speeches.
The best professor I had this semester. I would definitely take this Professor again.
She's a good teacher. she gives good feedback and tries her best to make this class entertaining and informative. i liked it, and i recommend.
This class was very fun. I've learned alot that will help me in the near future.
The class was fine it just demanded a lot of time. For example, you end up doing almost all of the workbook despite her giving you some to omit which would have been good if she told you which ones she would omit, but no she chooses so it's a gamble on your end to see if you do it or not. Also she makes students write good reviews for extra credit.
This professor never taught anything and was never able to lecture properly due to not knowing the text her self. She was very rude and conceited as well. Hw and assignments are all due online not because we are paperless its because she is to lazy to grade. If we were paperless we wouldnt have textbook.
She is very good at communicating where you made mistakes. As long as you take the class and her feedback seriously, and practice implementing her suggestions, you'll do great.
She is a nice professor but I would not take her again. She is a very tough grader on your papers and on your speeches, she also takes a long time to grade your work.
I was lucky because the people in my class are extremely supportive. That helped my confidence, which in turn helped my performances in class. This professor is super nice and while she is a bit strict on her grading, it's obvious she cares about her subject and her students.
She grades tough on EVERYTHING. I worked hard in that class and got a D, even when following the text book for answers on chapter questions. I do not recommend taking her if you are choosing to do public speaking online. She is not very clear and not great at emailing back for questions. Definitely take a different class than hers.
I honestly Did not like how she graded in the class. She takes her grading very seriously but leaves little to no feedback on anything. On speech days she gives no constructive criticism what so ever. It feels like Even going by the book your not doing a good job
The work is not difficult however she is an extremely hard grader. On top of that she does not give detailed feedback so good luck if you take her course. I think this class is so unnecessarily difficult based on her grading and her nit-picky nature.
She is a great professor. She really cares about the students. She is very patient with all students. If you want to be challenged and enjoy class take her class.
this class was fun but the outlines can be difficult because she is a harsh grader. She was very kind but and there wasn't too much work but the outlines are a big percentage of your grade and they could be difficult if your new to them. I would not take this class again only because the grading was stressful
Used her politics to shape grading seemed to ask questions not orientated towards an appropriate audience (asked me a white male as well as three others about social injustices Latina women face). Had a test about privilege told us if we are white and a male as well as Christian to add privilege points
Would not recommend. she takes a whole decade to grade your stuff, sometimes she has a smart mouth. She is a really harsh grader. If you don't complete the time limit of a speech even by 20 seconds she will give you an f on it.
I liked Professor Valadez and thought she was very helpful during office hours. Make an effort in her class and you will do well!
Disappointed with Professor Valadez's teaching style: 1. Lack of clarity and organization in lessons. 2. Ineffective communication and unapproachable attitude. 3. Inconsistencies in grading and contradictory feedback. 4. Refusal to offer extra credit for improvement areas.
Professor Valadez is very clear on her grading criteria. You just have to try and show up to class. Her class is zoom so it's important to actually show up and do the work! Just attend and participate and you will do well! Highly recommend for anyone interested in online courses.
This class had a simple layout and was not very difficult. 4 speeches total, 3 required research. Be sure to get the textbook within the first week or so, it is used often and helpful for developing speeches. There were 2 exams based off of the textbook. Zoom class requires webcam and access to screen sharing.
Takes a long time to grade your assignments, and gives very little feedback, and is very strict. I do not recommend you take this class.
If you value your gpa do not take this professor. She is tough grader, and takes an eternity to grade your assignments. She criticizes without giving any inclination on how to improve for the next assignment. The criticism is not constructive whatsoever. Good luck. May the odds ever be in your favor.
Slow to grade, quick to criticize. Professor is very particular, and you don't realize it till your half way into the semester because it takes so long to get your assignments graded. Would not take it again. Please do your research before taking this class.
harsh grader/ expects a lot from you w/ your speeches, but will poorly walk u through the assignments for them / gives minimal feedback / u can follow rubric and samples but still have a very poor score/ no extra credit for improved grade
she is not a good teacher!! doesnt explain things very well, you can email her and she will not get back to you if you have a concern for your grade she does not care whatsoever, if you are reading this do not take this class i regret it so much find a better profressor
This teacher was very rude to the students. We had students in our class who didn't speak perfect English. She was super impatient and would use them as examples. On top of this she didn't teach. Instead of teaching us she had us do an assignment, once it was graded, she would explain to us what we did wrong after. She doesn't explain how to do it.
Very bad at teaching
This is a very straight forward online class. Show up, listen, and ask questions. Professor is available for feedback and willing to meet to answer questions. I enjoyed this online zoom class. Very convenient for me.
She was overall very rude to students. If you are looking this teacher up and you read this message, I am telling you right now, pick a different teacher. Professor Valadez shouldn't even be allowed to teach, don't waste your time and hard work on this class, it wont be worth it.
Pretty good zoom class. Professor is helpful and flexible. Textbook is free and online.
i would definitely not recommend this professor what so ever she's very quick to judge and wants you to do everything right when it comes to assignments but doesn't explain the assignments good at all and when you finally get your grade she criticizes you on what you did wrong even thought you followed the rubric
She doesn't give clear feedback for the assignments you do. You'll have to wait a long time to be able to see your grade. She will take points off assignment yet never say why.
Just don't take this course with her. For your own sanity, don't do it.
Not clear instructor Gives a hard time Does not grade well Is unfair
To be completely honest, she was such a hard person to like. She would often change her mind about certain assignments at the last minute and it was frustrating. She treated students differently and made others feel uncomfortable about it. I don't recommend her class….
DON'T TAKE HER
Very rude, You will regret taking this class, it will destroy your mental health, always a stressful class, she is not understanding, she never responds to emails, grading is always the slowest thing ever, she is very biased as well
if you want to pass DONT TAKE HER CLASS. this class will mess up ur mental health
A pretty straightforward zoom class. Show up and give your speeches, participate, ask questions of other presenters, and you will do well. Textbook is also free online. She's also helpful during office hours if you have questions.
I agree with every review stating that she will ruin your mental health because she ruined mine. I also could never get a hold of her and I would have to reach out to her many times. She did not know how to explain the outlines which made it extremely difficult for me to understand. I would not choose to have a class with Professor Valadez again.
The Zoom class was fun. Get ready to participate in class all the time. Practice and practice your speech. Free textbook. Many quizzes.
She is a good teacher. Cares about her students. Will meet for office hours even on Sundays. If you are looking for a Zoom class take her.
You get 20 quizzes, but they help your grade. There is 2 exams. You get lots of samples for assignment outlines. The hard part are the speeches, so if you are lazy or like to go on Netflix drills, don't take any public speaking classes because it's all practice and lots of practice.
Take her. She makes you feel very comfortable with public speaking. I took the Thursday night class and it was all women. We all felt a very safe space to deliver our speeches. There's a lot of activities involved during class time, but it really helps to lower anxiety.
Take her, very understanding with personal issues. No late work, but flexible with speeches. Loved her class, I learned so much.
Professor Valadez has a strict grading system and provides minimal feedback. However, the class structure is straightforward. Engaging with the textbook and using study tools like Unstuckstudy can help manage the workload. Overall, a challenging but manageable course.
I would not recommend taking her. The false reviews should tell you everything about her respectfully.
I do not recommend.
I am currently taking her and she is so nice and gives every form of feedback including audio. I'm not sure why the reviews below describe lots of reading and papers, that is false. If you are not a student at BC or ever taken her class, please stop abusing rate my professor.
She is hot and smart. For the haters below get a life and stop writing false reviews. Public speaking is not easy for most people, but she makes you feel comfortable and coaches you in a safe environment. Take her if you get a lot of speaking anxiety.
I asked her for a letter of recommendation and she asked for a truthful review. She was my professor and student club advisor. She's about empowering women, especially women of color. She really cares about her students. I was able to attend conferences field trips and get involved with many women organizations that helped me throughout my career.
I had her this semester, but had to get a W for personal reasons. She's very caring and understanding so I'll be taking her in the fall again. Free textbook and always emails back.
I personally had a bad experience with her but if you do your part, you'll do great.
I don't like that her grading is hard , i get that its a communications class so its not easy. I also really dislike that our grade isn't visible? How am i supposed to know if I am doing good or not after already doing 3/4 speeches, it's almost the end of the semester and i still don't know my grade percentage. Shes and okay professors imo
We had to present all speeches on zoom. I had a great experience. I have bad anxiety and even more with speaking in front of people. The warm-ups, helped so much. Really liked the singing and humming.
liked her and the class, but it's not as easy as I expected it to be. You can't read your speech. She will know if you are reading and didn't prepare. I will be taking her again in the fall.
I had a fun time and really enjoyed this class. Take it if you like free textbook and a class where you get asked about your weekend. The audio feedback for speeches really helped me improve my speeches. I liked the Canvas grade book this helped me keep track of my grades.
She was an amazing teacher who made me love public speaking. She is very understanding and actually cares about her students. Speeches are worth A LOT, so if you fail a speech, you basically could fail the class. No reading, but allowed note cards during speeches. Does warm-ups to help with any nerves or anxiety. Gives very helpful feedback!
