Really funny teacher, always in a good mood and always joking around with the students. classes are somewhat hard, but Purdy always makes them interesting.
He is so patient and willing to re-explain if you dont understand!! Recommend this teacher!!
Extremely nice guy; dry sense of humor; funny; works at a very fast rate of speed.
You should attend every class cause he gives random quizzes, and they could help your grade. This professor is not for the slow learner and is a very hard class. Nice guy, jokes with everyone, very funny.
This is my 2nd semester taking Math with Purdy.I took Math 01 with him and found him to be such a great teacher that I took Math03 with him. He is very interested in helping his students. Although challenging he does it to make sure you leave his class with competetive math skills. He does everything in his power to help you. And he's Funny!
This teacher will work with you when you go the the Math Center and his office. You better not miss a class because he covers a lot and with rapid speed! Yes,he is funny!Do the homework,he counts it as credit.Tests are difficult, but you get practice exams.
this teacher needs to take more teaching classes and those who cant teach ...can only do
those who cant teach ...can only do
he knows the material, and you may very well be following along in class but he doesnt assign homework so youll find yourself going home and giving up on it. it is a difficult class and half of our class dropped. it is entirely trig based no getting around it with him, too much trig on the test and THEY ARE HARD. not a bad teach, hard class.
took this class at 7AM and now know I am not a morning person. From the lectures I was able to pay attention to, he was a very good teacher. During class, he is very helpful and will answer any questions. Tests are difficult, but c'mon this is CALCM25A not M03. He will sometimes make some tests out of 85 instead of 100 to help out your grade n such
Very fair teacher and is very generous with grading. Is willing to help out whenever you ask. But it's not an easy class so you really have to work to get an A. LOVES trig!!Literally 75% of the problems on the test are trig related. So if you're going to take him study that again before class starts!!
Good teacher. Easy to understand and well worth taking. He is very hard in his tests with trig and such, but he drops the lowest score, plus he grades on a slight curve. If you do worse than others, not for you. Study hard and go to his office he is very helpfull and enjoys what he does alot.
way funny!
GREAT TEACHER! He is hard, loves trig, and he makes sure you know your transcendental functions. Overall, smart guy, funny, and has a knack for knowing when the students are just bored out of their mind. So he puts in a fun story.. Overall, he was a pleasure to have and I recommend him to anyone who plans to pursue a field in mathematics.
good teacher, really smart guy. pretty funny, but a 3 hr stats class at 7 am isn't very receptive to jokes haha. gives hw sections at beginning of unit and due day of test. gives practice tests that are similar to real tests. attendance isn't mandatory, but gives quizzes almost every day there isn't a test. no multiple choice. HARD.
Terrible teacher. Very unclear when explaining concepts. Avoid taking him if you need to go on to calc b and c, you won't be prepared unless you get an A in the class without a curve. Don't go on to B if he curves the class grades.
He's a good teacher, but taking notes isn't necessary since he copies straight from the textbook. As long as you follow along, you will be fine. Tests are practically identical to the practice tests, and most people do well. He's a funny nerd, but it's not during a 3 hour, 7 am Stats class.
Took the online class. No book required. Great refresher course. 10 problems per every new problem set. Do it whenever you want as long as you keep a schedule. Should try to do it minimum three times a week. No final tests! Just do the assignments and meet with the teacher one time to check your progress. Do the work and it's and easy A!
Dropped the class. He is an awesome teacher, but didn't get half the stuff he wrote since it's paragraphs over paragraphs and not really any PROBLEMS. So if you learn better by practicing examples, he doesn't do any and wasted my whole semester. Does do EC tho !
He's a great & funny guy. He always made the 3 hour AM classes bearable & occasionally let us out early. Take him! Get on his good side & he might help you out a little!
Very Helpful teacher. Always ready to answer questions and re-explain material that was confusing in lectures. He keeps his class interested and makes the material fun to learn.
Great professor
online/self directed class-answered all emails promply-very helpful and accessible. Highly recommend.
Awful Teaher He doesnt explain the material at all. He simply rushes through it and it only gets worse as he gets farther behind. He had to look at the book every few minutes and even pulled out a calculator a few times, although we cant use them at all. If you want to pass, dont take this teachers class. Oh and he also forgot the Quadratic Forumla
I needed this class to transfer so I had little choice when it came time to register. I took him because it fit in my schedule. BIG MISTAKE. He is very friendly but he only goes over easy problems. The tests are very hard and he continuously needs to check the book for the right answer. Almost half the class dropped within 2 weeks. DONT take him
Horrible professor, he treated the entire class with disrespect. Very clear that he does not care about his students passing or not. I would never take another class with him. Even after emailing him for help on multiple occasions I got none.
Took this class over the Summer, he is a funny guy but gets of track sometimes. A lot of writing for a math course with less examples. If you come to class and study the notes you'll do alright. He gave us a formula sheet every test so that was cool, also dropped lowest test score.
I took his summer class and this was the first time I have ever gotten an A in math! Although he's slow and gets off topic sometimes, he teaches well, grades very easily, and replaces the lowest test score with the final. I'd definitely take him again!
I'm a high school student who took his class this summer to get a head start on college. He knew the subject very well and answered all my questions. I felt most of the class weren't keen on his sense of humor, but it made me enjoy the class more. As with most classes, as long as you attend class, do your homework, and ask questions, you'll get an A
Took him for Applied Calculus & Statistics. He is the best math teacher I have ever had. I am not a math person & rec'A's. He explains math using words,so it is clear & understandable. He gives worksheets & practice exams & ample opportunities for extra credit. He truly wants you to succeed. Wish I had math teachers like him in the past.
Best teacher in Moorpark college. Exams are from practice tests . Pay attention to the material and you will pass. Easy grader and great sense of humor. He might not respond to email but overall the best calculus teacher ..
a lot of online hw which is easy but time consuming. gives you the previous years tests as study guides before giving you the test. hes nerdy but funny and he is very reasonable.
Professor Purdy is a pretty easygoing teacher. His tests are always mixed because sometimes he tests us on stuff he never went over or taught. He is pretty fair though. I would recommend taking Purdy.
This class is pretty hard, he expects you to know how to do all of the things you learn in Algebra really well. He is a pretty good guy all around though. Lots of online homework as well as worksheets too. If your confident in your math skills i would take it but if not probably want to go take a different teacher
This class was awful. Not only was the material very challenging but he didn't seem to care about his students. Math is already hard for most people so to have a teacher that doesn't want to help or explain differently makes it even more challenging. Tests are ridiculously hard. If you aren't a math wiz, don't take this class.
Dr Purdy is a cool young guy. He knows his stuff but you get lost in his lectures. He's getting rid of online homework! We complained so much he's not doing it any more. The book isn't needed even though he says you do. He gives you handouts to work on for credit here and there. Final is worth 30% of the grade. He replaces 1 test with the final.
I freaking love Dr. Purdy! He's such a nerd that it's awesome! He will always make random nerdy jokes during class and get sidetracked! He's pretty chill and teaches well and gives you direct information you need to know for the tests! Pretty easy class, but if you do need help, he's there, and helps tutor! Definitely take him!
Easy grader! Assigns a lot of online homework but it's not worth a lot of your grade. Tells you specifically what will be on each exam. Posts notes online. Easy handouts to complete for points. Really funny guy too. He knows what he is talking about (has a Ph.D in math) and is willing to help. Dont be afraid to ask questions.
Dr. Purdy's class was really challenging, but as long as you study, do all the optional homework problems in the book, and turn in all the work sheets you'll do fine. He doesn't take attendance, and the semester I took his class he only gave one quiz. He also gives practice tests that are pretty similar to the actual tests.
TAKE OVER SUMMER. Fast paced but he's very lenient. Got a B I probably didn't deserve, but still got some basis for M25B. Talks bad about his wife all the time which gets pretty awkward... Eats candy during tests. I don't know how he is for FallSpring but would take again over Summer.
Let me start off by saying that I'm usually horrible at math and I'm so glad I took Prof Purdy's class. He's really funny and even though I find math to be incredibly boring I actually enjoyed this class. He's a pretty easy grader and is happy to help you if you ask for it. I would definitely take him if you struggle with math like I do. He's great
Awesome teacher. You will have to work hard in his class. But you will learn the subject very well. Best of my 5 math teachers so far. Once you warm up to his humor he is hilarious! Take him and expect to learn, have fun, and work hard.
He moves way too fast and when someone asked a question he responded with "how do you not know that." As a professor teaching a difficult subject, he should be aware that students are less inclined to ask questions if he isn't willing to explain. if you stay in the class you need the txtbook to teach yourself, otherwise choose a diff prof.
Not sure what he's like during the regular semester but DO NOT TAKE for summer. He moves really fast and if people ask questions or don't understand, he's pretty degrading. Doesn't really explain the material well which makes a hard subject even harder. Also makes really weird jokes that are really obnoxious and offensive.
Took his 7 week summer class. I suck at math but I got an A. If you're a good student take him; if you're lazy, don't bother. He gave 5 tests which are exactly like his sample exams. All you have to do is put the work in. If you don't get an A in the class, it's you're fault not his. He's a nice guy too.
Im not very good at math, but purdy totally helped! He gives practice tests that are identical to the exam, and goes over every question! Just practice his tests and you'll know exactly what to expect! He doesn't do any surprises and will explain everything the best he can. Take him if you can!
Professor Purdy is a joke as a teacher. I admit he knows his material but when it comes to teaching he is not very clear and shows very little interest in the students. He is NOT organized at all, doesn't follow syllabus, absent a lot, moves exams too much, skips the last section. As a student I want a teacher that cares about our education.
Hilarious & Knowledgeable! His lectures are full of examples & even goes step-by-step on how to use the calculator to make your life easier. He provides handouts/practice exams on what you should know, so no surprises. DO THE WORK! DONT SKIP! Don't buy the book. An A is more than doable. Ask ?'s & go to office hours. Would take him again!
Dr. Purdy is a straight forward kind of guy. Which is exactly what you need when it comes to math. I dropped stats previously and was terrified to take it again. With Purdy's teaching style and abundance of available resources, I can proudly say, I passed Stats with flying colors! He posts everything on desire 2 learn, which is super helpful!
Brendan Purdy is awesome. First of all, I SUCK at math (like so bad it's not even funny), but I got an A in this class. He explains everything in terms that are easy to understand, and his tests are identical to the homework and practice tests he gives you. I highly recommend him! P.S. He's also hilarious.
Brendan talks kinda fast and sometimes is a little hard to follow! But he puts everything on D2L so if you miss something it's up there to reference later! I'm terrible at math but the way his class is setup it's virtually impossible to fail. Unless you do nothing
Brendan was such a great teacher, it was a hard subject matter but he never failed to clarify what he was talking about in class. I would take his class again.
I'm so happy I took his class. he explains everything so logically that no way you won't get it. trust me it is a hard class but he teaches it so simply. go a head and TAKE his class. you'll love it. it is way better than algebra, here he tells stories and you learn how to estimate, probability, and cool stuff on TI 84 calculator. he is funny!
His humor takes a bit to get used to but once you do, you'll like Purdy. He's super sarcastic and sassy although sometimes he can get a little out of hand. He also gets tests and homework back very quickly. If you do the homework and study the practice tests, you're gonna get an A.
Doctor Purdy is very smart. It's very inspiring. I took calculus 25A over the summer and it was really hard. You learn a lot and learn to be able to solve very hard problems (They give the math center problems). He's super dark and it's funny. He's super chill about grading. Except to spend a lot of time.
I am a bad math student to start off with. In fact i have passed all my math classes with a C at best. His grading on test was fair and just. I ended up with an A as my over all grade. The hw was okay because you have to do it out your grade suffers a little but if you turn everything in and do well on tests then count on an A as your final grade.
He has multiple typos in every single handout and practice exam, it is hard to tell if you have the right answer or not sometimes when studying. He is an easy grader and he is funny. Tests are extremely hard and you have to study a lot for each one on top of a lot of homework.
Purdy is amazing! I had failed stats my first semester and decided to take him over summer and came out with an A! His practice exams and handouts were so close to his tests. He really wants to help you understand. You really have to try to fail his class, even he says it. Easy grader! Gives partial credit on his test! Take him!!
Most amazing stats professor I think you could ask for at Moorpark! I took stats and dropped it because I had a C. I've never been good at math and came out with an A!! Homework is an easy A and his practice tests are almost the same to his actual test. TAKE HIM!
Dr. Purdy is one of a kind! He is laid back, chill, and funny. He REALLY wants you to succeed in his class and will go over whatever you don't understand. This class does require a lot of studying/ homework but the handouts and practice tests are pretty much the same as the actual tests. Hands down the best teacher I've had in a LONG TIME!
Laidback professor but a lot of work to keep up with. Wheelan book questions are pointless and just extra unnecessary work that takes up time from studying for your test just like the "mini projects" which are due the class after your test and are another extra assignment to stress over right before a test.
Let me just say that he is very intelligent. However, you must put in work. I am currently enrolled in his class and I work EXTREMELY hard for my current grade, which is an A. He has a total of 5 exams, including the final. He gives practice exams and practice questions for each. You must put in the work or you won't do well.
Literally the easiest math class I've ever taken and I don't consider myself good at math. I went to class like every other week and when I did I usually left during the 10 minute break. Not sure how but the last test we took I didn't study at all and still got a 94% on it. His lectures are super straight forward and basically no homework & no text
This teacher was easily the hardest math teacher I have ever had. Don't expect to feel comfortable asking any sort of question if you are not understanding the material because he will make you feel stupid. His lectures are fast paced and he zooms through class. Tests are extremely hard in his class as well.
somehow i failed 2 exams and still got an A. he's very lenient with grading, offers extra credit, he definitely wants his students to pass. personally i dont think he's very approachable or helpful if you don't understand something, so pay attention! he also thinks he deserves a chili pepper. Nope. take him though, an A is more than possible!
Dr. Purdy is liberal with points but poor at explaining things. You will pass his class but you may feel you don't really understand the concepts. He flies through the lectures. He gives notes but they are often insufficient for homework. He can be condescending and irritable when asked questions. His sarcasm is not as charming as he thinks.
Math is not my thing. Been struggling with it since I was little. I was so scared to take it. This class is great because all the materials are online and you can check and study them anytime you want. Professor Purdy posts practice exams and handouts that are very similar to the real tests. So no much surprises. Fair grader! Gives extra credits!
Dr. Purdy is a real fun dude who is very weird, but the good weird. He is funny and makes everyone feel comfortable. He gives you all the tools you need to be successful in his class. His test are really easy and are very similar to the handouts and practice test. You will not be disappointed taking this guy. Ladies he's bomb!!
If you think Purdy is a difficult teacher, you better hope he is the last math professor you take in your college career. He could not make things easier for his students. Yes, he is a little intimidating when you ask questions. But nonetheless, he will answer them. His practice tests are exactly like his actual tests. You have to try to fail.
Professor Purdy is by far my favorite math teacher at Moorpark!! He's always there to help you out if you need it, and literally gives you study guides that are exactly like the exams! I suck at math but he made it so easy to learn and understand stats !! TAKE HIM, YOU WONT REGRET IT
Purdy is hilarious! he is such a great teacher and he is always willing to answer questions. he is definitely sarcastic but that's just him, don't take it personally. He explains things well and he is a fair grader on tests. stats is hard but you have to be willing to practice
would give 0 stars if I could. WORST TEACHER AT MOORPARK! Always makes offensive comments in class and goes off topic. He doesn't know how to teach and his tests don't make any sense. SO unorganized, loses work and grades very unfairly. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this teacher.
Professor Purdy was one of the best math teachers I have ever had. Their are 4 tests and a final. He has homework assigned for credit and posts the answers online. Their is a big project but as long as you tried you pretty much got full credit. You have to study just like all math classes but Purdy is definitely the teacher to take.
I thoroughly enjoyed Purdy's stats class. He is hilarious.
Best math professor ever. Definitely will take again.
"A for effort" This was my second attempt taking Stats and I'm glad I took it with Purdy this time around. It was a summer class and because of that we moved incredibly FAST. He understood the stress we were under and therefore graded us based on material AND effort. He doesn't appreciate slackers. He WANTS you to do well.
Purdy was a great teacher. I took his hybrid statistics class and it was not terribly hard or time consuming. He really does want everyone to do well. I am so terrible at math and ended the semester with a B. Read the Naked Stat. book! He gives many bonus questions on his tests. Just try your best and you will pass.
Took the new class MO8, I get its a new class I took it in the fall its an 18 week course he made it seem like a 6 week summer class rushed through the material. Super nice guy, funny but with this class its you get it or you dont and you go from 10.1-10.6 in one 1 hour class so yes if you cant pay attention and follow along you will fail!
Really funny professor, he wants his students to do well, and will make the effort to help you actually learn the material. He knows this is a prep class for stats and teaches it that way. He gives great study guides for tests and as long as you show work he will give you some credit on tests. If you just show up, take notes, and try you will pass.
Really helpful teacher and uses crateive methods to help his students. Gives you extremely helpful study guides and prepares students really well for test. Also is very funny and class is fun
Professor Purdy couldn't be that bad, since I'm not a math person and was still able to get an A. I was lost by most of his lectures, but he posts slides, practice exams, etc., which prepare you pretty well for the tests. I also recommend going to the Math Center (3rd floor of the library) and getting help from the free tutors, if you need it.
Here's the deal... If you wanna skate by, maybe check out another professor. But if you plan on transferring, want to learn, and are not a lazy student, then take Purdy. Only downfall is that he's so good at math that he straight up can't wrap his mind around students' questions sometimes.
The best math professor I have ever had. Occasionally offers extra credit on tests and quizzes too. Overall, excellent professor and I highly recommend her. (NOTE)A graphing calculator is required but you can save a ton of money by renting them at CalculatorGenie .com
Math M08 was a new class offered in the fall for the first time at Moorpark College. The class gets you prepared for Math15 which is stats. It is a hard subject to follow and he rushes through the material. If you are good at teaching yourself a subject then this class would be fine for you.
I literally wouldn't have passed Statistics if I took a different professor. His hybrid class is easy if you put in the effort to look over your notes and study!! Do his practice tests and you'll do fine on the actual test. Online quizzes were on google so its an easy A. Funny teacher but talks too fast. I recommend recording his lectures if u can
Provides detailed and clear reviews to help students prepare efficiently for test and exams, very accommodating with office hours and gives constructive feedback
Dr. Purdy is not only a great teacher and lecturer, but he truly does everything in his power to make it so every student can pass his class. He gives ALOT of opportunities for extra credit, gives ALOT of partial credit on tests, and gives clear examples for his tests. He does have a sarcastic sense of humor, but he is hilarious. TAKE HIM!
Pretty solid professor. He lays out everything you will need in the beginning of the semester. You must expect too many surprises from him. He is very straightforward. Make sure you do all of your handouts and study guides before the test, as they are very similar. This professor wants you to do well, make sure you do any extra credit.
He is always willing to answer questions, explains subjects well. I would recommend to anyone wanting a laugh during math class and a teacher who breaks down the subject. I will be taking him for my intro to stats class
I took his online summer class and it was very fast-paced and intense at times. 4 main tests, final, homework, quizzes and a chapter book to read. He cracks weird jokes a lot and goes quickly during lectures. Otherwise the class is okay. Just make sure you plan time for studying especially if you're bad at math like I am. Worked hard for my grade.
This was my second time taking Dr. Purdy (I had him for M08) and once again, I recommend him for stats. He can be persnickety but he truly wants his students to succeed. He was kind enough to let us (the summer hybrid class) have access to the lecture videos that he made for our online counterpart. We used StatCrunch, instead of a graphing calc
Professor Purdy is a good choice to learn Calculus, however, his tests are difficult, the homewrk is on WebAssign (online), and there are 4 total quizzes each worth 10% of your grade, he drops the lowest one and replaces it with the final, he knows how to explain well, tells jokes every now and then, good teacher but make sure to do extra studying.
If you take him for stats he has you purchase an online account which has your homework/text/exams. Some exams are taken at home and has a time limit. Hes really the first math teacher I have taken that cares about his students. He response to emails fast. Hes open to questions. My class was 10-12:50 the latest we stayed was until 12.
Professor blows through lectures and leaves you confused as can be. I have been in tutoring 10 hours a week just to understand what he does in class the week before. Hes teaching style is him just blowing through notes and doesnt realize that no one understands what he is doing. I would not recommend Brendan unless you are very good with math.
Honestly, I am not great at math and I received an A in his summer M08 class. His study guides are extremely clear on what will be on the test which is very useful. I am in stats now and I regret not taking his class. Lectures are a little fast but he posts notes on how to do the problems. Hes hilarious and knows the subject well (it shows)
I hate math. I took intro2stat hybrid as my first math class since high school and my grade was at a C the whole semester until the final came around and I got a B on it and then Aced the final project. Couple of tests, one project at the end and a final. If youre struggling, just do well on final and project and youll be okay! Good Professor.
He gives you opportunities to ask if you're confused. He's not a tough-grader. He gives you enough chances to raise your grade just by doing the basic work he requires. He's very fair when it comes to grading.
His exams are HARD. Read the directions CAREFULLY. Will take off points for not following simple directions. Pulls exam questions straight from the textbook (Review & chapter problems). Good luck. Pay attention & check your work since he is prone to making mistakes on exam answer keys and problems worked in class. He is funny sometimes.
He was really horrible. If you are struggling with math, I would suggest you to NOT take this Professor as he does not know how to help and makes fun of you if you ask questions.
This course is like a test of your calc and precalc skills. The overall concepts learned here arent too difficult, but whatll screw you over is if you dont remember things like how to decompose fractions, take integral of arc trig funcs, use synthetic division, etc. Seriously, this is probably the reason why people end up dropping.
I was scared going into his classes, I was about to drop him because I did horrible on my first test, so I went into his office hours and questioned if I should keep going. "Just do ok on the next tests or try your best" so I took his advice and went with it. I received a C for prereq to stats, then took intro to stats then got an A.
Lots of assignment but if you want that A, it's not impossible. He gives a study guide before every test and they are practically identical to the actual tests. The final project at the very end of the semester was definitely the hardest thing.
Professor Purdy does not teach. He goes through the lecture and assumes his students already know everything. For example, section 6.4 deals with physics applications. I have not yet taken physics, nor is physics a prerequisite for the class. Yet, professor Purdy has the audacity to assume all his students have a background in physics.
The in-class lectures are rather decent, not the best. Fairly vague. 3 HW assignments and three quizzes for each unit, so 12 total HW assignments and 12 quizzes as well as 4 online tests and 4 in-class tests. Study-guides are very similar to the tests. Lots of self-study as the teacher does not really teach the material all that effectively.
He's a decently good teacher. I took his Calc25A class from 7:30-9:45am and he was always smooth with his lectures. Some kids have complained on here because supposedly he doesn't explain well, but that's more so to do with the fact that not many kids ask questions. If you're unsure, ask him and he'll answer nicely. It's an insightful class.
Dr. Purdy is a solid choice for Intro to Stats. - Records and posts his lectures online in case you missed something. - Gives plenty of time to do assignments. - Makes jokes which makes it enjoyable to go to class. - His online notes aren't the best, but explains them very well in class. - Does not take attendance. Show up and pass, easy A.
Its a tough class, however its doable. Do all the textbook problems you can, as he pulls those questions onto the test. Do not expect to do the bare minimum and pass.
Definitely assumes you fully understand calculus before even taking the class. Whole-heartedly does not care about what you think. Be ready to youtube lectures to help yourself, otherwise don't take this class ill prepared.
The average scores for some of the exams are about 50%... how is this allowed...
He's a cool guy, but very bad teacher. The average test score for his tests are 50%. Everyone fails his tests, and he blames it on the students instead of trying to help.
Purdy is ok for stats. For calc, however, it's already a hard subject and he doesn't care if you understand it or not. Currently, half of the people dropped already and I'm about to do it as well.
Does not teach, blows through lectures and blame students for bad scores on tests.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR CALCULUS! he shows no interest to you and when you ask something he becomes very impatient! Avoid him if possible!!!
Not a bad professor but not a great one either. Makes very off-putting jokes or will go on tangents about topics unrelated to math and he can come off as rude. All his slides are online, he makes it very clear what is on the test and gives out as much homework as humanely possible. Get ready to dedicate your entire life to math if you are ready.
All I can say is this is the first class I have ever had to drop due to poor teaching. This was a hybrid class which I would never do again for this subject, but the lectures are useless and I did not feel comfortable asking questions because he makes you feel stupid when you do. I would not recommend.
Definitely a smart guy but not a good professor. He doesn't care whether you pass or not. If you have to take him then get ready to read the textbook over and over and watch YouTube to learn the class. He rushes through lectures and says weird jokes out of no where.
I couldn't transfer because of this class. Beware all non-traditional students: He assumes you have the time to study on your own for up to 3 hours, forgoing other responsibilities so he doesn't teach beyond the basic objectives. Figure out the rest on your own. Homework and tests are difficult. No extra credit. No chance to make up your grades.
Professor Purdy is the absolute worse teacher I have ever had. He truly wants his whole class to fail. The whole class is failing and he does not care whatsoever and blames it on the students. Whatever you do, do not take this professor.
Dont take! When school was cancelled he gave up on us, we had to learn on our own. Since we get to take tests online now he made them double the amount of questions (21)as an in class test (10) all with 4 parts each. The class barely finished half in all and there was no curve. He blames it entirely on us instead of reevaluating himself.
This professor has essentially given up on his classes at this point. Once we were online due to COVID, he had two ZOOM lectures and then gave us the publisher provided videos to teach ourselves Calculus. Doesn't answer emails on time if at all, rude and vague when he does, and simply doesn't seem concerned with his students learning. AVOID HIM!
During the ongoing COVID-19 situation we had only 2 zoom lectures with him! After that point he just disappeared and posted Pearson book lectures online for us to study the material on our own. Im basically teaching myself calc at this point. This professor doesnt care whether you succeed or not in his class and it shows. Would not recommend.
He stopped zoom lectures and now we are all on our own. Let's be honest he doesn't care about you at all.
Horrible attitude when asked questions, only take this class if you can pass you classes through means of self study. Incredibly short test times, and will get mad that he waisted time helping if you fail.
I don't recommend this professor at all. He has given up on his students completely due to COVID-19 so you're on your own. He also does not post grades up and will wait till the very last day to update your grade, so you really don't know if you're passing or failing the class. He also makes you feel stupid for asking questions. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I just want to warn you guys that the average score of every exam we had was never above 70%, which means half of the people in this class would fail unless Purdy mercifully curves it.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAD!
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DONT TAKE HIM.
He's very fast paced and does forget to mention things sometimes so he'll post lectures online but it's just not an easy class. You have to turn everything in on time. If you're capable of teaching yourself and quickly grasp the material then he's your guy. If you need to be more hands on to learn, then a hybrid class is not for you.
Prof Purdy is absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had. Had to get the dean and department of chair involved multiple times. Just please save your GPA and dont take him.
ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER EVER. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He gives very horrible lectures, makes fun of you if you ask a question, gives unbelievably hard tests that should take about 4 hours but expects you to take it in 1 hour. Avoid taking this teacher at all costs. The whole class is failing, and he brags about it.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROF IF CLASSES ARE STILL ONLINE. In person, Purdy did a great job of teaching, providing practice exams etc.. Online, he failed to lecture or provide any sort of direction.
Proffesor Purdy is an awful teacher. I really believe that he deserves to be fired. I have never seen a teacher care about a class less than Dr. Purdy. He cancelled all zoom classes and left his whole class to learn calc on our own. He also gives incredibly hard exams, very little time to complete the tests, and does not respond to emails.
My first class I ever had to withdrawal from. Took this class with a friend expected it to be difficult and found it completely impossible. The tests weren't that bad but he's a hard grader. Every time someone asked a question he made them feel stupid. Honestly surprised the dean hasn't gotten involved
Worst professor ever. He completely gave up on his class and stopped doing zoom videos because he is too lazy and does not care. His excuse is that "he has kids" so he can not do his job properly. He won't respond to emails and takes off points for ridiculous things such as not writing your name last name, first name. The dean should get involved.
Admittedly, no one expected the school closure near March, so faulting him for not being an amazing online teacher isnt fair. Plus, its been harder on him, he has a bunch of classes to keep track of, his kids and hes working on getting another masters degree as we speak. Hes genuinely a good teacher, just do your best to study and itll be fine
Because he is a PHD when we get a C the thinks its because we don't try but in reality we are giving it 100%. Theres a gap between what he expects and what's feasible given his help. Yes we need to work really hard but at a certain point it becomes near impossible. He needs to open his eyes for fks sake. I'm frustrated asf. Hope for a C expect an F
Dr. Purdy makes this already difficult class impossible. He is the worst teacher I have every experienced in my life. Taking this class is very frustrating because he does not care at all for you. I can not believe teachers like this are allowed to teach.
Dr. Purdy is a joke. Horrible teacher and a very mean, evil person.
First time I have ever failed a class due to horrible teaching. Do not take this teacher.
I had a C before the epidemic. Purdy gave us a take-home exam which replaced the second lowest midterm. I think most people got 105, which boosted my grade to an A. He is not bad but definitely need o study hard for this.
Worst teacher of all time. He wont respond to emails and gives impossible tests.
Stopped teaching when we moved online & gave us video lectures from the textbook. Problems on exam & final were 10 x's more difficult than any homework or lecture problems. He never responded to my emails. He made it clear the first day that he doesn't care about his students. As the semester went, on he seemed more annoyed with having to deal w us
Im glad I passed this course but it was a pain in the butt to do so. The prof seemed all over the place towards the end of the semester in regards of what to expect on his tests or the final. He did provide some leeway in regards to dropping your lowest exam which was nice. His in person classes were more structured than online, Take with caution.
This teacher hates teaching and hates all of his students. Does not answer questions or respond to emails.
ABSOLUTE WORST PROFESSOR ON EARTH! HE IS A TERRIBLE PROFESSOR AND PERSON! HE CANCELED ALL ZOOM LECTURES AND MADE THE CLASS LEARN CALCUS ON THEIR OWN! DIDNT PUT IN GRADES, MAKES YOU FEEL DUMB! HIS TESTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE, AND HE DOES THAT ON PURPOSE BECAUSE HE THINKS ITS FUNNY! HE ALSO DOESNT RESPOND TO EMAILS! AVOID AT ALL COSTS UNLESS YOU WANT AN F!
I got an A despite getting a C on every test bc I did the hw (there's A LOT) and got at least a B on the final. This was the most effort I have ever put into a class and still did worse than I expected on tests. He's a v tough grader and his tests require knowledge of old math skills not reviewed in this class. It's very hard, but not impossible.
ACTS LIKE HE IS A HARVARD PROFESSOR THIS IS MOORPARK COLLEGE CALM DOWN
This man is a coward. I went to his office man to man asking for advice on how to reach my dream school UCLA (he is a UCLA Alumni). He said word for word, 'I don't know, do what you want." I came looking for guidance and maybe some inspiration on getting into that school. He met me with a lack of care as he couldn't even make eye contact with me.
Does not respond to emails. He thinks he's a god cause he knows calculus, when in reality hes just a pathetic community college teacher who flaunts his math skills over his students, as it is the only thing he is decent at. He keeps his head down when people raise their hands. We started with 40 and ended with under 20.
Stopped zoom lectures midway through the course. We had to learn the material on our own, then he expects excellence from his students. Contradicts himself constantly; grading practices are grossly unfair; rude to students who have questions; ignores emails. Purdy should honestly be suspended from teaching.
Listen to the ratings & DO NOT take him for Calc. Such a tough grader. Even if you get the right answer on the test & show all your steps in detail he will take off an excessive amount of points if you did not write it the way he wanted it. Took the summer class & there were more than 21 long hw assignments & 4 exams with a final. Proctorio used.
The lecture videos and class notes are hardly helpful since he barely explains anything. For this reason, you will be forced to learn from outside materials if you take his class. His tests are difficult, and he is an unreasonably tough grader. Proctorio is used.
Save yourself the trouble and do not consider this option. Severe time constraints for tests with far too many questions. Choose any other class over this. Tough grader doesn't even begin to describe him.
Calculus is a subject that is hard on its own, but this professor makes it even harder with the expectations he has of his students. If you are not a mathematics major & would like to actually learn the material at an easier pace with less judgement, then don't take his class. It's a doable course but takes a lot out of you. Tests are very long.
He doesnt answer questions when you ask them hell go around your answer without answering them. Especially with everything on zoom he says he will respond to emails Ive emailed him twice already this semester and he hasnt emailed me back. Poor communication with class.
Worst professor I have taken! I took Calculus in high school and understood it well. Although in this class it was hard for me to understand anything in his lectures and had to learn it from outside sources. His homework is nothing like his tests, with barely any time to finish. I suggest you choose a different professor if you want to learn.
Hard to communicate with. Skims material then has to go back because he didn't read the question properly in lectures that are mostly ramblings. No quizzes but a lot of homework, and all exams are proctored online. Still passed with a C after failing every exam because I did all the homework, discussions, and project.
I'm in Purdy's online intro to stats course. If you don't learn well under pre-recorded zoom lectures with a monotone voice then this is definitely not a good covid class for you. Tests are hard + the proctoring software he uses measures eye movement, records screen, etc. I'm normally an A student, but I currently have a C. Seems nice though.
This class sucks your life away. No grace for tech issues & lectures are mediocre at best. Exams are impossible & proctoring software is intense. Not responsive to email. After 20+ hrs/week of going to math lab daily & involving chair & dean twice, I had to drop. I'm an A student. DON'T TAKE ONLINE!
There is no homework, only projects. We had to use a coding system which was difficult because he didn't teach us the language. I did not learn anything from this class and had difficulty reaching out to him on multiple occasions.
Tough grader but exams are exactly like the practice exams given. You know what to expect and how to succeed, so if you put in the work you will do well. It's a tough course but he does give you everything you need to succeed. Lots of homework but it's for your own good. You need the practice. Show up to class for hints on exams.
Easy honors class. No tests. Only weekly projects that you have to do that he explains how to do in the lectures. He lectures and explains what you have to do very well. Just make sure you turn in ALL the projects on time and its an easy A.
Honestly one of the worst teachers that I have ever had. The lectures are soulless, the tests are hard and dont match the study guides at all, and just taught word for word out of the textbook. Expect to teach yourself the whole semester. Avoid this teacher at all costs.
Listen, if you suck at math don't take this class cus here you have to work. HOWEVER Dr. Purdy is very caring and will answer any and all questions (w/ zoom videos explaining). I suck at math hence my grade. If I was less lazy I probably would have gotten an A tbh. Take him if you are ok with working !!!!!
He is terrible complains when you don't understand anything. Can't open up any of his tests even if you are a day late. He also didn't care when I couldn't do my work because of my grandpas passing but he had to take a week off from class because someone in his family passed.
Statistics is a hard class as is, but this professor only makes it harder. If youre taking this class online be ready for monotone lectures and heavy homework. Does not accept any late work and has poor communication. If you can, find a different professor who cares about their students and wants them to pass.
not gonna lie, if you want a professor that will coddle you and respond to every single one of your emails, prof purdy is not for you. he gives you clear guidelines and what he expects you to know on exams. just study and do practice problems and follow his instructions on anything, and it is a pretty easy A. stay on top of your hw and you're good.
PURDY IS AMAZING. He gave me 100 on the project and I was so scared for it. I am actually terrible at everything that has to do with math and this class made it so easy and understandable even though the whole thing was online and it was a four week summer class I loved it and would for sure take again. TAKE THIS CLASS HE MAKES IT SO SIMPLE.
Im not really sure why people say such mean things.. I really liked this professor! He was very helpful and explained everything very well. I feel much more prepared for math after taking his refresher class.
Professor Purdy makes it clear what is expected of you. He takes the time to clear things up for his online classes. Whenever there's challenges with the homework, he records a video to explain how to solve the problems. He gives plenty of time to work on homework. I am really bad a math so his lectures really helped. Highly recommend!
This was a very difficult class, the homework barely reflected what is on the actual exam. Will barely budge to look at your test, even if you got a question correct. The professor was literally just monotone reading from the textbook, and would give the most unhelpful answers to student questions. Was difficult to reach out to outside of class.
if you are looking for a teacher that is going to give a monotone lecture while simply reading off slides, and does not care about his students professor purdy is your guy!! super homework heavy and the tests are impossible. the one thing i will say is you can fail the tests and still get a B if you do the homework.
I took an 8-week online math reasoning course with Professor Brendan Purdy, and it was one of the worst experiences I've had with a college math class. Not sure how he is in person, but some of the work was nearly impossible. Expect loads of work and heavy stress haha glad I was even able to pass.
His lectures are very difficult to follow due to a lot of irrelevant rambling so it's easier to review the slides & text. Homework assignments are easy to do as well as discussions. He is very over-pretentious & does not want to be bothered by his students. Not all the exam questions are covered on homework.
Worst professor at any university. He hates teaching and makes sure you know it! His tests are the most extreme and difficult problems. Any positive or moderate review on here was written by himself. Do not take this professor ever!
Dr. Purdy is borderline insane. He cannot hold a lecture conversation on topic for the life of him. He spent over a quarter, CONSISTENTLY, of our ~1.hour class period on random unrelated topics that would come up to him. He is unfocused, a liar (he says something won't be on a test and it is), and forgets topics. He's bad (even though I have an A)
Beware! Read the reviews... I wish I had. If you already know the material, and the course is a formality, then this professor is perfect. Show up for the tests and collect your grade. If you need to learn the material, you'll be better off with any other option. Unfortunately, I agree with the worst comments I read here. Huge disappointment.
Do you love math? Thinking of math as a major? This guy will cure you of such ridiculous ideas.
Curved the tests. Notes were subpar. Need to teach yourself to do well. Hard to access. Not accommodating for circumstances. Study guides look like the test (most of the time...). DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. Overall, it's like being taught by a robot. It's straightforward, but don't expect a friend at the end of the class.
Falls behind the class schedule quickly. Goes off topic. Not helpful in office hours. Doesn't have a deep understanding of the course material and needs solution manual constantly. Combined final and project into a take home with material that was never covered. Used this to boost bad grades. 40% dropped the class. Did not learn much. Received an A
This guy made his online m15 class way more complicated than it should have been and did not care. He makes you do programming in order to get onto a calculator that he requires the class to use. He made me waste my money.
bro is pretty funny but the way he sets up the class is horrible. So many lectures, would not post the answers to practice tests and if he did he wouldnt give additional practice. The tests were so hard comparing to the practice/example problems hed give us. Also he would just post like 20 youtube videos for us to watch instead of lectures.
This professor is "hilarious" in the way he conducts his lectures and exams. No jokes he will ever tell will be as funny as how he teaches his material. Take this class if you want to learn calculus which you will never use again. He does communicate that day 1. Not worth the honors credit.
Horrible professor
Introductory Honor Statistics. Although Purdy is hilarious, he is not a great teacher. The class was labeled as basic stats, but it's entirely R coding. The assignments take lots of time, but very easy grader (never had below 100s). Mostly everyone failed the first test. The second was easier. Barely got an A and I only got less than a 90% once.
Although this teacher is pretty funny at times, he does not teach enough at all. The practice problems during lectures are nothing compared to what is on the tests and since the class is all tests and no homework, it's almost impossible to keep a decent grade in his class.
Dr Purdy was the best choice for a stats professor for me. He put a lot of time into making his online courses and explains everything in simple language. He makes it so you understand every step before you move to the next one. The coding was not fun but he gives step by step written and video instruction so it's not that bad.
Professor Purdy is very smart, but he is not a great teacher. His lectures were very dry and boring, and often would skip steps or use unknown techniques. He is a harsh grader, and there is not extra credit. He does replace your lowest test score at the end of the semester however. Overall, I probably would avoid him unless it's not possible.
Okay, professor. Most of the stuff is things I learned in high school, so if you don't know most of the material, be prepared to read and research a lot outside the class and work a lot because there are a lot of assignments weekly.
Pretty okay, professor. Most of the stuff was things I learned in high school, so if you don't know most of these things, be prepared to read and research outside of the class a lot. Also, be ready to work a lot and avoid procrastination, as there's an overwhelming amount of assignments weekly.
Professor Purdy's M15 class requires a lot of work, but with the help of resources like unstuck AI, the coding assignments and exam prep become more manageable. Attend lectures and review the slides to stay on top of the material.
I loved his class to be honest. He's very fair about exams, he tells you exactly what's going to be on it and its extremely accurate. He provides a lot of practice problems, and writes his own so you know what the exam will be like. Honestly if you just do the practice he provides youll be fine. Hes also super funny i love him.
As long as you pay attention to lectures and take notes, you will be just fine. The labs that we are assigned are almost identical to the examples shown in class, making them easy to follow. The tests are also provided online and are very fair since they closely align with the material that is taught in class. Overall, would recommend!
Another “do things differently” prof, but it works! There is a programming calculator he makes you use that made me cry every week but then he mentions you can screenshot his screen instead. Outside of that he gives three attempts on everything with amazing feedback. I got through the class (98%)entirely off attempts, then going back to the lecture
This class was pretty difficult, but the professor was excellent. He took the time to make sure every student understood the material and was always willing to help. His lectures were clear and detailed. Even though the course was challenging, his teaching made a big difference. I would recommend taking his class if you're willing to put effort.
Took the summer 6 week session so it was a test a week. Would recommend if you have taken calculus before in high school or at a different college and already have an understanding of the concepts. The tests were fair and their wasn't a ton of extra work. He curved grades at the end of the term.
Bruh. Never again.
I can see how if you haven't taken a stats course before, this class will be difficult. He doesn't exactly explain things well. This course also utilizes a stats programming calculator that I personally disliked. I'm not sure if other professors do the same. Overall, he's not the worst, but not the best either. Lots of work.
For Calc 3. This was a flipped class, so he wants you to teach yourself the lecture before coming to class. Tough grader and does not give feedback, just solutions to the exams for you to review on your own. Nihilistic views made me worry about how he would grade. Said "When you die, your grades will not matter." Bruh, you're in charge of my grade.
Professor Purdy has not once contributed to my understanding of Calculus 3 this semester. His lectures and notes seem to be straight copied paragraphs from the textbook and he seems to think highly of his own math knowledge. He frequently misgrades exams so do be diligent about checking HIS work when receiving back a graded exam. He loves to talk.
I took Professor Purdy for honors Stats, and he made it easy to get an A. He's helpful during office hours, and attendance isn't required since everything's online. Math isn't my strong suit, but I completed all the work and tests without trouble, so I recommend this class!
This professor is a smart helpful person if you actually participate in his class you get a A
