Very entertaining at first. But then that wears off and you're stuck in the class. Has too high of expectations for class members. Seems to have personality issues. Very self-centered; you can tell that he is really in love with himself.
I enjoyed Brother Bean's class a lot. He was entertaining and caring and made learning the material interesting and fun. I always looked forward to attending his class. Yeah he expected a lot out of us but that motivates you to work harder.

Personally, I really enjoy Bro.Bean's sense of humor and personality. He is very smart and a strong personality. He sincerly cares for the students I think, even though he may come across as too sarcastic or a little uncouth in his methods. I recommend hi
great guy!!!!!!!
Bro Bean was a complete goof in class. He was great, highly entertaining and made the four hour block class in one summer term go by fast. he can be hard at times, but fair.
Very well organized, requires some hard work but it pays off. Great humor and ease in the classroom. I reccommend him to everyone.
Bro. Bean is great!!! His sense of humor helps understand his lessons. I always looked forward to his classes. Everyone should take him. His classes are hard, but they are classes you will remember after years. I still remember some of his lessons given my freshment year!!!
Made lots of good points...interesting lectures and discussions. Gets to know students
His class is structured clearly and he has the class give you insights on your public speaking. Its a good way to get honest feedback.
great class. funny guy.

He's way funny. Totally down to earth guy and a fun class!

Bro. Bean is one of my most favorite teachers of all time. He'll help you when ever you need it.I always looked forward to going to his class because they were always so interesting. All of his assignments are loads of fun to do and you learn a lot from them. You can tell that he loves what he does and that he cares for his students. He grades very fai
Brother Bean is an amazing teacher. He is so funny and made everything fun to learn. The class scared me at first because I didn't get the grade I thought I deserved on my first speech but Brother Bean ended up being a really fair guy. YOu have to put an effort into it but you will get an A. Take this Class you will learn so much from Brother Bean.
Not helpful! Terrible teacher...
He talk about everything, less than the lectures for class. The test are very detailed.
You have to take a class from Bro. Bean before you graduate. If you only take one, take COMM 150. It will change your life. It has been the best class and decision I've made at BYU-I
Bro. Bean is the shizzle! He rocks! If you have a chance to take him for anything then do it! Those who say he's bad are just lazy...and his class does not even require a lot of work! At least not busy work! Keep it up brotha!
He is a good teacher and he cares about his students and the enthusiasm in class is very good in helping the students to get excited about the subject.
Everyone should take Bro.Bean at least once before graduating! He's very caring and willing to help you. I never missed a day of his class because it was amazing! He's way funny and easy! He gives a lot of assignments, but they aren't hard. The tests are naturally the hardest, but you just study! Rock on Bro. Bean! I will DEFINATLY take him again!
Brother Bean is hilarious and his class was always fun and entertaining! He grades hard but it is well worth it.
Brother Bean is awesome! I LOVED going to his class! Don't even think about taking this class from anyone else. You do have to read a chapter before each class, but the quizzes are basically just the terms...easy. GREAT CLASS AND TEACHER!
Brother Bean was an awesome teacher. He knows how to present topics in a way so they will stick in your mind. I loved going to class because he made it fun and interesting. He really cares about his students. You will do fine in his class if you keep up with the reading and study!!
REally funny guy, but is hard and expects alot for a interpersonal comm class. Has some weird fews on things, but overall a good teacher. i wouldn't take him again though.
Good teacher. Able to teach well. Not hard to get a good grade.
he was hard but i had him at 8 in the morning and i loved going to class, i stayed awake...most the time ;) be prepared to read everything twice so that you understand. his test are some of the hardest i have taken.
He's hilarious and a great person but not a very good teacher in my opinion. At least not at 745 in the morning. It was like he didnt have time for our class. He wasn't very clear on the requirements for the class and has no idea what he is doing with the technology on I-learn. It was more frustrating than helpful.
This guy is the shiz whith the best stories. take him. He's hilarious.
If you are looking for easy street don't take this guy. Bro. Bean has high expectations and that should make you want to be better. His stories make the class come alive. As for the comments about technology maybe you should rate the techy guys. Take him you will see why most pepole like him. I would like to see the GPAs of the raters. 3.95 for me.
Fun-lighthearted-over the top and through the roof kind of guy. He teaches by entertaining. Sometimes his assignment explanations are unclear. Work hard play hard kind of guy - very willing to work with you on questions or problems that arrise - easygoing
I really enjoyed Bro. Bean's class. I learned a lot of things that are useful in life. He tells a lot of funny stories that apply to class but doesn't cover the material for the tests in class. Study the textbook and your notes and you'll be fine.
I took Bean for Conflict Management a few years ago. He was one of the more difficult teachers that I had at BYU-I. He didn't offer an 'easy A'. He's smart, his class was interesting and he has a great sense of humor (in my opinion). I don't think that all students like him, but that isn't unusual. I would recommend taking him as a teacher.
Awesome guy. Tests are hard because we have to memorize every definition and principle. Way fun but hard
He had us giving public speaches on the internet, not even in front of people. He didn't know how to use the technology correctly so sometimes you couldn't give the speach. He's a funny guy but rude to you if you mess up.
He is an awesome guy. I however did not enjoy his class. We had to give speeches online and he didn't do a good job on explaining how to do it so mine were one to five minutes late and received no credit! I would take a different teacher.
I had him for both public speaking and for interpersonal. Bean is the man. He is the coolest and has the best stories. He makes you feel totally comfortable in front of people and talking in class. He is the best!
Brother Bean is a funny guy, but very often he ended up talking about himself. Everything that was discussed somehow tied into his life, and required at least a 5 minute story. The class was fine, but he tried too hard to make himself seem appealing.
Great teacher. Easy A if you pay attention and do the speeches. You have to turn your stuff in on time or you don't get credit. He tells a lot of stories but they are usually fun to listen to and always refer back to some principle of speech giving. I would recommend his class.
He taught very clearly and entertaining when he wanted to instruct, but occasionally would speak a little long. He has a good sense of humor, but sometimes his explanation of what needs to be done can be a little unclear. He critiques great and helped me understand how to speak better, not the buddy buddy kind of teacher, but does a good job.
Funny and entertaining. Gives good feedback. There's a decent amount of out-of-class work.
Funny personality, good guy; he gives good feedback. Don't forget to do the speech comments on other speeches. He never really emphasized how important that is to our grade until it was eternally too late!! Pretty upsetting
I think he's the best teacher i've ever had. I could listen to him talk for hours. I would recommend taking notes when he writes things on the board. If you are doing the quizes for 450 you are screwed. but if he does the captures they are easier. Study the quizes for the test. Check your email before the semester starts there might be a quiz.
You get no credit for late assignments ever, but it's fun in class. Tells stories a lot, but they are usually funny. VERY strict with everything like assignments and attendance and in class rules.
Bro. Bean is a great teacher. He will definitely keep you entertained. He gives some fun assignments in his Interpersonal Comm. class. His tests are a little tough, but if you study, you will do just fine.
I hope everyone has the chance to take one of Bro. Bean's classes before they graduate. If you do the assignments, take decent notes and study the chapters you will get an A. It's been three years since I graduated and I still remember his lessons and stories. Do whatever you have to to get into his classes. You will not regret it.
You will learn so much in this class. Bro Bean is funny and makes you feel like it was worth it to come to class.
Brother Bean is awesome. But this is a hard class that is very back end heavy. He is harsh and Captures SUCK!! But they do help you study for the tests. Study hard because his tests are the hardest tests I have ever taken! But it's a great class that is worth the work. Brother Bean sounds like Matthew Mcconaughey, but doesn't look like him... :o)
Brother Bean is an incredible teacher! He is very entertaining and you'll learn a lot! But don't forget to make comments on the online speeches. They will kill your grade!
Brother Bean is a great guy, and good audio teacher. You will laugh a lot in his class. He isn't very structured, and often gives confusing instructions for assignments. When he states directions, he often only states them once so if you are more of a visual learner, and like structure in your courses, I wouldn't suggest taking his class.
This is the best class and best teacher you could ask for! The class is no joke and a lot of work but the info you gain is priceless. Bean and all his little beaners are great!
Bro. Bean is a rude guy. I hated his class and marked me down on public speaking for stupid things. Hes funny but, Worst Teacher ever!!!!
Seemed pretty good at first but got bad fast. Bean loves to talk about himself and how he's right and your wrong. I gives little constructive feedback and doesn't do much of teaching. His class provided little help in Speaking. You give speeches, he says how bad you did then you give another. No actual teaching how to improve and good techniques.
Funny guy. Don't forget to make online speech comments though! Bro. Bean is honest and as a result sometimes comes off harsh. Great teacher, just not for me. Gets off topic sometimes but always teaches well.
Brother Bean has a refreshing classroom environment because he doesn't use Powerpoint. He does a good job at getting students to interact and enjoy his lectures. He's not very helpful outside of class and can be vague when emailing you, but he is a good teacher and I am better for taking his class.
Bean is a combination of Brian Regan and John Travolta, which makes listening to him very entertaining. The text book he chooses for the class is beyond dopey. Seriously, everyone in the class made fun of it all semester. His mid-term and final are incredibly difficult. Also, good luck on getting a response if you ever email him. Fun guy though!
Brother Beanis the MAN! He's totally willing to work with you, and keeps you engaged the whole class period through humor, activites, and other assignments. His tests are difficult, so be sure to study hard through the material covered in class; otherwise, you might have to retake it. Highly recommended!
Brother Bean is hilarious... like a Brian Regan concert. However, he is not a very good teacher. His class is very unorganized and his tests are ridiculous. If you want an A, good luck!
Brother Bean is a really fun teacher. I enjoyed his class. The subject is very interesting. You would have to do Chapter Capture every week, that can take some time, but other than that all assignments are easy. Make sure you do them, do get a good grade. I would recommend taking Comm. 150 from him.
Brother Bean has been such an inspiration in my life. He has taught me SO much! Plus he's freaking HILARIOUS!!!!
One of my favorite classes. I learned a lot and always thought about principles outside of class. Tests were a bit challenging but I believe that everyone should take this class. I highly recommend it for anyone, comm major or not. It's only hard if you are lazy, so go to school and do what you're supposed to be doing! Totally worth it!
Speaking in his class was terrifying. He knows his stuff, but to anyone who is weak in speech, I would NOT recommend him. Although he is a brilliant and hilarious man, his teaching style is NOT for the faint of heart who are here to try to "step out of their comfort zone." This really should be a 300 level class.
I just want to say that Bro Bean is in my top 5 list of best professors in this campus.
Awesome! If your open minded and willing to learn you'll love him. He is intelligent and knows his stuff. His tests suck but he gives you every opportunity to succeed in his class it will challenge you though.
He will mark you down for small reasons and not give any feedback. You need to be really persistent in trying to see exactly what he wants, otherwise you will get docked. It's really really hard to get in contact with him through email.
Brother Bean is an awesome person (really, really funny), but as a teacher he doesn't really have any lesson plans for teaching FDCNC. He assigns homework in class and isn't very clear on how or what exactly he wants. I am a straight "A" student and got a "C" in his class.
Brother Bean: Seinfeld and Brian Regan combined. That is who brother bean is. He is VERY entertaining, and extremely prepared every class period. You'll love every second of class, but curse his name while sitting in the testing center. If you fail classes that push the test as being a huge factor, BUCKLE UP. But adopt him as my uncle, yes I would.
I loved Brother Bean's class. It was super easy and he made everything very fun. The discussions we're helpful in learning and it was a very engaging class. Definitely recommend his class.
A very disorganized teacher. Class discussions seem to be stories about his life that he spends way too much time talking about, which is why the class falls behind schedule. He doesn't listen to feedback at all, which makes it very hard to want to talk to his about all of the disorganization. Very frustrating.
Great insights that can change your life. You can definitely apply the things you learn in this class right now in your life. Phenomenal Teacher!
I loved Brother Bean!! When I was falling a little behind, he approached me to make sure everything was alright and helped me get back on track. He truly cares about his students and their learning people!! If you want an excellent teacher, he's the man!
Loved the course. Bro. Bean knows the topics well. Though I-learn is unorganized, things still make sense. Do your captures and you're in good shape; and participate in class. Be keen on what is discussed in class; it comes back and you'll want to know it. Overall: learned great things and enjoyed the course. It's labor intensive, but worth it
He looks really good in a suit.
Great teacher
If you read the chapter and study from the book you should do fine the only reason he is hard to me is that his tests are fill in the blank.
Class time is memorable and Bean is no doubt a fabulous teacher. That doesn't necessarily translate into meaningful applications. In other words, you won't remember anything you learned from the textbook or tests, you'll only remember in-class discussions. Tests are subjective not objective making it somewhat difficult to get into Bean's head.
Phenomenal teacher. Not easy but totally worth it.
One of the most caring teachers I've had here at BYU-I. Super nice, hilarious guy. Totally reminded me of Brian Regan. Tests can be hard if you don't study, but if you do your work, pay attention, and take notes in class, you'll be fine. Would recommend his class to anyone.
Brother Bean is not clear in his expectations. His tests are very specific when his teaching is very vague. I struggled to receive the help I needed from him. If you have to take the class from him always print everything out and make sure you know the chapters very well. Don't depend on class to know the material.
One of the worst teachers I have had at BYUI.If you want to sit in a class where the teacher talks about himself for a majority of the time, this is the class for you. Very unclear expectations. Assignments are inconsistent. I would highly recommend not taking this teacher if you can avoid it.
I took Brother Beans class and while there were a lot of good points i felt confused as to what was expected on certain assignments. He is very strict on his policies which is good but not when certain policies and due dates arent published in advance. being assigned a few days before its due isnt a great thing when you have a full load.
Brother Bean was hilarious, but his teaching style and my learning style did not mesh well. Every week we had to pretty much rewrite the chapter in our own words. I got nothing from it, just memorization for the near impossible tests, and then I completely forgot everything. I feel like this class could be good, but it needs some major refining.
I took Interpersonal from Brother Bean and have appreciated all that I learned in his class. I use the principles taught in his class daily. I appreciated his expectations and his humorous presentation style. I earned an A in his class, and it has become one of the most memorable and useful college courses I have ever taken.
I really enjoy this class. I think it is very applicable. Lots of fun.
Brother Bean is the MAN. This class was awesome, he is the best teacher, so fun and keeps class upbeat. There is a decent amount of work but as long as you stay on top of it, its easy enough. Interesting topic, and brother bean is the ONLY teacher you should take this class from.
Bean's a good guy, and really cares and knows about his stuff. I feel like I learned quite a bit. It's a 400 level class so difficulty is pretty much to be expected, although sometimes I was unclear about what was going on. He asks you to read the book Leadership & Self Deception during the semester break. You get points for doing it so read.
Gotta take Bro Bean for this course. He's very passionate about interpersonal communication and teaches many great practices and principles to utilize in your life. Three main tests, study hard for them! Stay up to date with your portfolio you'll be making, and learn to be a good journal writer if you aren't already. Overall, I enjoyed taking him.
Nice guy, poor teacher. He spends most of his lectures talking about how great and smart he is. He taught the principles for Interpersonal Communication, but in a self aggrandizing way. Would assign projects/homework on a whim and never remind you about it, I understand this is "College" but using I-learn would be appreciated.
I am taking my second class from Brother Bean. He is a super funny teacher and his classes are really interesting to learn about I would recommend him to anyone and everyone
I loved taking this class from Brother Bean. I didn't think it sounded very exciting, but it ended up being my favorite class. The discussions were excellent. Sometimes assignments can be unclear, but he's willing to clarify. I always left class in a good mood. Weekly chapter reading can be a bit boring, but an easy grade. Tests okay.
The best professor I have ever had. I took classes from him just because I loved him so much. He is so dang funny and like-able. He does have a serious side though especially when it comes to grades. His class can be difficult but the things I have learned in his class has stayed with me over everything else I learned in college.
You will learn tons
Brent Bean has to be one of the worst teachers I've ever taken, he doesn't really care about his students. He is very self centered and conceited, he will not try to help you. I would not take him for any class.
Great teacher, inspirational. The best professor I had in college.
Brother Bean is THE MAN! I took Interpersonal Comm and Captone from him. He is by far my favorite teacher. Ever. He doesn't give out too much work so as long as you are an adult about it and get the little he assigns in on time, you will do fine. He really focuses on long term learning instead of just earning a grade.
Brother Bean is an interesting person. He thinks a lot of himself which inhibits his ability to truly better himself as a teacher. If your assignment is late, he won't accept it. His lectures are intriguing, but he talks so much you don't know what you need to remember or what is just a story. His tests are ridiculous. Take this from someone else.
Brother Bean is a fantastic teacher! He is a fair-minded and reasonable person. He will tell you up front what his expectations are and will expect you to abide by them. He does not accept late work, and bases his tests around how well you listen during lectures. You will learn much from him if you have a positive attitude.
I learned a lot from his class but felt that the things he tested us on were pointless and not very important. He would tell us his theories on what we were learning and that would be what most the tests were on. If he wants to do that he should write a book about it so he can be a credible source. I liked him as a person though!
Bro Bean is a great teacher. Super funny and gets students involved. I would take a class from him any day. I always looked forward to going to his class! He is the man, and a great golfer :)
Not a fan. I had heard good things but for people who already think, this class was a drag. I felt that class was pointless but attendance is mandatory. His lectures are long-winded and I know more about him than I'd like. He loves to toot his own horn and he's a talker not a teacher. I'm sure he's smart but teaching style and testing style are not
Brother Bean is willing to take time to talk to students outside of class. He helped me with some outside conflicts I was dealing with help make sure I dealt with them in a legal, responsible manner. His lectures are engaging and give you something to think about. There's a lot of discussion based on readings, but it's so amazing!!
Very funny! Exceptional class to teach you to manage conflict and negotiated. Skills obtained are definitely worth it.
Great teacher! Very supportive! There for the students and always connects the gospel into what he teaches. Take notes during his lecture (don't worry, they are fun). He will test on stuff he says in class and out of book! Would definitely take a course from him again!
I was afraid to take this class because my friend got a C, but if you do all the homework and reading (which is a lot) and study for the tests you can get an A. His classes are fun and he always starts with a funny or insightful thought or video. Pay attention to what he says. Take his class if you really care about learning.
I absolutely loved this class and Brother Bean is the bomb. Class is upbeat and always fun to be in. One great thing about Brother Bean is that he teaches through story telling so classes are always interesting and engaging. Make sure to pay attention and take detailed notes in class. This is not an easy A but if you work hard an A is possible.
As a student that has many learning disabilities it was awesome to figure out that he has a lot of the same learning disabilities as I had. He knew where I was coming from and he is willing to help you if you are willing to put in the work. As a side note it may seem like you do a lot of work but it is relatively easy. Like writing in a journal.
Bro. Bean will be remembered by me as the top 3 professors I had at BYUI. His humor and teaching style is exactly what works with my learning style. Bean is a funny guy and uses it to his advantage. I found myself learning something every day.
Class? Awesome. Brother Bean? Really nice but not much for thought. He's very confident but it also causes him to be very rigid in his interpretations of things (especially doctrinal things) that I don't agree with. He thinks he's got it all figured out, and I wish he treated us like we were smart enough to interpret this stuff for ourselves.
Bro Bean is GREAT. He's nice and has interesting insights. There's a lot of reading. You'll do chapter readings at least once or twice a week (the chapter write ups are long, too), but he grades these pretty easily. Group activities were really fun! As long as you do the work and made a little effort to think about it, you'll do fine.
Brother Bean keeps class entertaining with all of his stories, make sure to take awesome notes, the tests are tough. It's a lot of busy work, but the topic is incredible. I would recommend him.
A refreshing break from the "feed lot" approach to education indicative of online learning. The lectures were dynamic as were the assignments, which would often be adjusted to match lectures. His reputation as a "difficult" teacher must be unique to communication majors, as this course was no harder than a typical scientific course.
He is my favorite teacher at BYU Idaho. Once we talked golf and the next time we went he came and hit the sticks with me and another student. His strong opinionated personality may be a turn off for some but he backs it up with humor and a lot of inter actual learning. His spiritual thoughts and stories always bring the spirit to class . The best.
Bro. Bean is a very difficult professor to work with. I was involved in a serious accident and he gave me next to no extra time to prepare for my final speeches as well as other assignments His attendance policy is strict he does give you two free days and then after that you get shafted. He treats his course like it is an upper level course.
Brother Bean is an amazing teacher! I loved that he encouraged us to challenge his ideas. I worked hard in his class and that's why I learned so much from him about myself and others around me. He really cares and makes you feel heard. I would highly recommend him. If you want to be stretched and learn some life changing things, take him.
Bro. Bean is great in the fact that he does his part and then expects you to do your own. You truly earn & deserve the grade you get in this class. If you work and study hard you will do great. The class itself is amazing and how he teaches it with examples and discussion is even better. Bro. Bean cares about & wants his students to be successful.
Brother Bean is an amazing teacher! I wish he taught more classes that I need to take. He is inspirational. Very funny. He does expect a lot out of students but as a result I feel like I learned a lot more than I would from other teachers. Lectures are very engaging and never boring.
I loved Bro. Bean's class. He brings the Spirit into class from start to finish, and also includes fascinating psychology points as well. I felt that the reading was maybe a little much, but the hw load wasn't too bad. I did enjoy attending his class and felt that I learned a great deal of applicable knowledge for my field and for life in general.
Dr. Bean's classes are amazing, he is a great professor and has inspirational insights every class. This being said I failed his class... Brother Bean's class has so much busy work... daily journals and portfolio assignments and weekly chapter captures... He seems to forget we have other classes than just his... Amazing class, be prepared to work!
Captures are kind of rough, but he is amazing. Pay attention in class and you will do great. very understanding, involved, personable professor. I wish I could take all his classes. Speak up. Get involved in Class. He is amazing, this class can change your life!
Brother Bean is an incredible teacher, he keeps you engaged in the class by his humor and topics for the lecture. Definitely try to get into his classes.
Brother Bean is a wonderful Professor and a great example. He cares for his students and is an effective teacher.
So here's the deal. His class lectures were amazing. He kept us laughing the whole time. This is a homework heavy class, but the tests are easy. Overall, EASY A class. My friends and I all learned a ton as well- this is a class that has legitimate, real-life application. TAKE IT FROM BROTHER BEAN
This class seriously changed my life. It teaches the best concepts and the way Brother Bean teaches makes it very applicable to life. The midterm was killer and I celebrated when I missed around half of the questions, but he lets you make revisions so you understand the material and what you got wrong. The final was not difficult. Pay attention.
He is a funny guy with a big personality that keeps you awake. He likes to tell stories at the beginning of each class as a thought. There are a few tests but the main part of your grade is a project due at the end of the semester. There are also journals and chapter assignments due each week.
There's a lot of busy work in this class, and you have to take good notes. Great teacher, great content, difficult work. Sometimes he even gives out homework that has nothing to do with the class at all. Frustrating, but not impossible.
I have never been so frustrated with a teacher or with a course. I took this class online and the structure was often disorganized and the instructions unclear. Mr. Bean looks for every opportunity to penalize you. He believes his way is the right way. He gave me a 0 because of a computer mistake that caused me to turn in the wrong assignment.
Brother Bean was an amazing teacher. I had his class a 7:45 in the morning and often times it was really cold outside. Despite the cold and the time of day I always looked forward to attending class. I learned a lot. I was always entertained with Brother Bean. He made learning fun! You have to do work but its worth it. It's not really a hard class.
Brother Bean is incredible! He is so caring and really wants to make sure that you succeed in the class. There is a fair amount of assignments for the class, but none of it is busy work. He makes the class very enjoyable, and I actually remember the things I learned from him! I am taking more classes from him next semester and I am very excited.
Bro. Bean is a good teacher. He is animated and fun, and has many of his own theories about communication. Prepare for a ton of homework. You will spend hours reading and writing, but the nice thing is most of it helps you learn the material and some of it is actually fun.
Class was kind of unorganized and he didn't communicate super well. You have to do a 35 hour project and log your hours and do a detailed journal entry each week and a paper at the end. In my opinion, a little too much for a 1 credit class. It was fine and I had no problems, but I preferred Bro. E's class.
I like Brother Bean. He is different. Pay attention in class because that is what the tests are based off of. Take notes. The way he has you study the chapters helps you apply it to yourself. He keeps you on your toes so don't sleep through class! He is very educated so he knows what he is talking about. He is very funny and relatable.
There's a 4-page assignment due every week of the semester based off the textbook, so you essentially read the whole textbook through the semester. Only thing from the book on tests are key terms. No study guide, and really unclear what will be on tests. But just do the assignments and you'll get an A. Journal entries also required every day.
I love bro Bean. I am going to take all of the classes he teachers (I am not even a comm major!). He is so willing to help you if you have any questions or concerns. all of the assignments really help you learn. The assignment that is due every week is your study guide! I reveiwed that assignment right before any test I got and I aced it. Love it!
I was on the verge of writing a negative review of this guy for almost 3 weeks in the middle of the semester. But I wanted to wait til the end of the class to write a review... and Bro Bean actually won me over. He does assign a lot of HW, but his assignments are very immersive. The discussions in class are great.. I'd take him on a light semester.
Brother Bean is very good at making class interesting, and has the best stories. Because of this, I feel that I was able to remember the things we learned in class easily. However, make sure you take good notes. He doesn't do study guides on his tests.
Brother Bean is an awesome teacher! He really knows a lot about communicating and how to improve communication skills. His expectations are clear and grading is fair!
He means well but his classes are terrible. He doesn't follow the syllabus, is not organized with homework, talks about his personal experiences on conflict which contradict the principles he teaches in class. He means well but the class is boring, monotonous, contradictory to the things he teaches, anyway, don't take it.
He shares stories during class for the entire time. He barely teaches anything and then drops a test on you. He doesn't even explain what's on the test so you don't know what to study. I go to class and hear another random story from his life. Lots of book work. Hardly teaches you anything.
B. Bean is amazing! His lectures are so informational and entertaining; you learn so much AND retain the knowledge for further use! A must take from him, he's hilarious& really knows his subject well. There are a lot of assignments throughout the semester; they are time consuming but not difficult. Make sure to study the lectures notes + key terms.
He was one of my favorite professors. Bean is definitely a person who you love or hate. I think he was hilarious, but very inspirational. He really makes you think about what you're learning and makes sure you remember it.
Amazing teacher, one of my favourite, but you either love him or hate him. Pay attention in class as anything could be and will be on the exam. Build a portfolio throughout the semester including chapter captures, personal journal, and other assignments. Inspirational and personable. Hope to take another class from him.
Brother Bean is hilarious and gives the best stories. This class teaches you the abstract principles behind communication, and it does require some textbook reading and serious studying. Beware of pop-up quizzes, especially when you start studying listening. Keep those things in mind and you'll do great. This is an excellent class to take.
Brother Bean is my all time favorite professor. His classes were entertaining and the lessons he taught were very applicable and captivating. I wish he could be my professor for every class I took. I'd highly recommend him.
I wish other people taught this class because I wasn't a fan of him as a teacher. He wastes a lot of time and doesn't address important topics with the class (instead he tells long irrelevant stories). Your grade almost entirely depends on your test scores (midterm and final only). The captures don't help for the test either. Self-righteous guy too
I had Brother Bean for comm150 and 450 simultaneously. 150 isn't too much work and is a good overview of xiaoping's. He relates everything to real life and helps you to do the same. 450... that takes xylene effort. It is very possible to do very very well, though. It is a senior level class and he warns you that he teaches it as such.
Brother Bean is a really good teacher. He does go off on tangents a lot and wastes a lot of class time, but they are almost always good stories and tangents. He assigns A LOT of homework.
Easily my favorite professor I've ever had. He was always so funny in class, but still made sure we were learning and progressing. He is firm on making sure you listen in class but it really isn't hard. He keeps it interesting and my concentration never wavered during his lectures. TAKE HIM.
Brother Bean is a great teacher and loves his students. He explains subjects clearly and effectively, and makes sure things have meaning for his students. The only problem I had was the excessive amount of work. Reading a chapter a week and doing a 3-4 page outline was more work than necessary at least for me.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Brother Bean. His class was the most useful out of any classes I have taken at BYU-Idaho. He is so fair and loving to his students. He wants you to do well. The class is so inspiring and I still use the information every single day. So grateful for Brother Bean!
Brother Bean is very challenging, but in all the best ways. He has high expectations and a lot of homework, but is all geared to you getting the most out of his class. My experience as his student was spirit-directed, enjoyable, and life-changing. If you value getting the most out your education, I highly recommend him. Not good for easy A's.
I really love Brother Bean. He's super knowledgable + passionate, he's strict but not heartless (so, willing to work with you when a situation warrants it). I think he is a fair grader with reasonable expectations. He assigns a lot of homework but all of it is so so worth it. I've learned SO MUCH valuable+relevant stuff this semester, def recommend
Grading criteria is extremely unclear. He's disorganized and he doesn't provide any study guide for his tests. His test questions are extremely hard and abstract, you better have a good memory to remember anything from his lectures. He does not give out +'s or -'s on grades. so if you get C+ he gives you a C. I had a 4.0 GPA before this guy's class
He is the dream for students who try hard b/c the time you take to study & take notes of everything he says will be rewarded. Those who glide by or dont enjoy the material struggle b/c you have to pay attention. I took a freshman class with him & noticed he has since cut out the busy work to let you study. These life skills changed my life.
Brother Bean was by far my favorite professor I've had. I had no problems with his class, all of the assignments were very clear. He was very funny and brought spiritual aspects into the class but not more than necessary. I learned more in his class than any other class I've taken, and I'd recommend it for anyone even if it's not in your major!
The people who say Brother Bean isn't clear in his expectations didn't pay attention in class. He is VERY clear from the get-go: what he says in class takes precedence over anything written online. Just stay engaged in class and you'll do great. Take notes in his lectures. He is more than willing to work with you if you put in the work as well.
He is amazing! You HAVE to pay attention, you HAVE to show up. But you will pass if you do! Study and ask questions. He is so inspiring!
I really enjoyed the content taught in this class. However, a lot of the content you'll have to learn outside of class. Brother Bean uses up a lot of class time sharing stories and not a lot of time teaching content. In order to do well on the exams you'll need to do lots of memorization. He's a great guy, but you'll be doing lots of work.
He is a great professor and shares a ton of stories. Sometimes too many stories can be confusing because you do not know which one you should take notes on. One thing I have to say be ready for unnecessary stress and homework.
Be prepared for unnecessary stress of homework and assignment. Good professor but talk trash a lot.
Ms. Bean was my favorite professor at university. He made learning so fun that it didn't feel like a chore. He treated students with respect and I always felt safe in his class. He's an incredible teacher.
Brother Beans class taught me amazing life skills and I am so grateful! There is a lot of work but if you stay on top of things youll do great!! I had this class at 7:45am and he kept me awake the whole semester haha
Overall the semester with Brother Bean was really good. You are expected to do "captures" of the chapters every week. There is a midterm, a group essay, a final exam, and a final group negotiation. Late work is NOT accepted. Be prepared for class everyday and you should do fine.
Brother Bean is an amazing professor. He is very down to earth and willing to help you not only with the course material itself but how to apply it to conflicts in your life. There are two group projects and 2 major tests. The rest a captures on the weeks reading. His attendance policy is flexible and he does drop a capture.
Professor Brent Bean was amongst the greatest and best teachers I have ever had in my entirety of education. He adds humor and many personable aspects that makes you feel welcome, respected, heard, and appreciated. He will listen intently and ensure your experience is applicable and worth your time. I would take him again 100%! Stay Safe and Sober!
Brother Bean cares enough about you to expect greatness. He is an EXCELLENT teacher, and knows his stuff. He wants everyone to be successful and to truly learn the material. His lectures are a great mix of material and humor. I’ll recommend him to everyone.
Brother beam was a very great professor. He would tell stories that I personally would find relevance to and was able to relate to my life and my school work. You do read quite a bit, but The reading material is very helpful for the tests. If you do the work and put in what you're supposed to do then you will get a good grade.
Brother Bean is a great professor! He teaches like a grad professor because he knows we can accomplish a lot at a 400 level course. If you pay attention in class and study a little before the midterm, you will do great! His lectures are amazing, relevant, relatable, and inclusive. There should be no reason why you should hate or fail this class!
Decent enough guy, very funny, cares about students and wants to give them good advice for life. However, too much work and not-very-efficient teaching style. Most of class is him telling stories, sometimes only 15-20min for actual learning. You learn from reading a dense textbook and writing 4 pages about every chapter. Unnecessarily strict.
I think this is an amazing class. I have learned so much and it's been great. He does share a lot of stories but they are very inspiring and useful. It's very clear what you need to write down and it's not a lot. Exams are on notes and the vocabulary, very easy exams because there isn't a lot of notes and not that many vocabulary words.
Brother Bean is a very inspirational individual. His stories are fantastic, He is very intelligent, and caring. anyone who complains that he is annoying, difficult, or "inappropriate" for talking about genetics. Don't listen to them, they are babies
Brother Bean is awesome! He's very funny and he just gets it. Most of the work is busy work, but his class is very entertaining. I recommend taking his class!!
Brother Bean is something else. He's honestly a cool and funny guy, and he will crack you up every class, but f you can avoid taking classes from him, AVOID HIM. He literally writes his own tests on things he said ONCE in class mixed with stuff from the book that he never mentions in lectures. Be ready to teach yourself. He's unfair and off topic
Brother Bean was fun but lots of work. DO NOT RECOMMEND IT. His tests are ridiculous. Half of the exam questions were about something he said in class like "what book did I recommend." RIDICULOUS! He talked about himself for more than half of the class. Really self-righteous and shares his political opinions. If you can do not take his class.
Struggled in his, but he did help me kinda. The issue I had with Bro. Bean is that I asked if there was anything I could do to raise my grade after it had dropped from a C+ to failing 3 days before the semester ended. He gave me a lecture on morals for a good 15 to 20 minutes instead. Even getting a 100 on his final test wouldn't have helped me.
Lots of people like him! He's engaging and tells fun stories. But honestly, I expected more from a 400 class. He talks about himself a lot. My main request for Br Bean is to focus class time more on our readings and tests and less on experiences. A lot of us really want to learn and discuss the material. It's fun but we also want good grades haha.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!
Bro. Bean is Amazing! Gives great lessons and is really fun to listen to. Make sure you do your captures every week because that is where most of your grade comes from. TAKE NOTES!!! He doesn't do study guides and almost all of the questions on the test come from the lectures in class, so make sure you take notes.
The Mid-term was fair but makes up most of your points in the class, so studying is important so you can do well. You have enough time as it was given in the testing center. Make sure to attend class and do not miss it, so it can help your grade at the end of the semester. There are not a lot of assignments, so the Mid-term and final are crucial.
Brother Bean is great! Lots of stories, which is awesome! His midterm and final are super heavy in the class, so I would recommend attending class to be able to prepare well for the exams.
agh this was a tough class! I pulled a B but like whew, that was rough. He's ruthless with tests and grading and no amount of persuasion will get that man to change so you just gotta deal with it. did learn a lot tho but he's not always very clear about grading criteria and expectations. You kinda get thrown into a fire and gotta figure it out
Brother Bean was such a funny teacher! Every class we were laughing because of his hilarious stories. Then the projects do take a lot of time, but you learn so much about yourself and how you communicate with others in the process. I loved this class and would definitely take a class from him again!
Has cool stories.Super strict with attendance not helpful if you have to miss. Tests are ridiculously hard and based on random stuff he said in class like: "What is Brother Beans favorite book." I took this class as an elective to learn about communication and its my hardest class. Did not excuse class or do a zoom class the day it was -40 degrees.
Loves to repeat himself. Kind of crazy when it comes to attendance, I am not sure if it is because he feels you are interrupting his story time or because he really is a bean, like Mr. Bean. I would agree he is great at telling stories but to me, he seems like one trick pony because that's really all he is good at. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Brother Bean is a really good teacher, I learned a lot but his class is difficult. So prepare to do lots of heavy homework and papers. This class exhausted me but if you can handle a challenge take this class from him.
Brother Bean is so self obsessed, he is really great at story telling but not a great teacher, he assigns LOTS of busy work but don't expect any of that information to be on his tests. His tests are ridiculous and only based off his stories! I did not gain anything from this class besides lots of stress and useless homework! Do not take his class!
This is a college level class and you have to do your home work. Test are based on the book and lectures. attendance is taken but he zooms every class. Stories are related to the topic he is teaching. You can learn a tone about yourself and others in this class.
This is the most entertained I've ever been in a college class. Brother Bean knows how to make every class exciting. As long as you take notes, you'll do fine on the tests.
At the start of the course, he mentioned he had students who never took the exams and still passed the class with a C. I took all the exams and failed. I would love to work with my wife in the same department too.
Brother Bean was my favorite teacher that I've ever had! He wants this class to be a senior level class so he makes the work load close to that. I respected that about the class and prepared myself for the amount of work he gave. He also loves to tell stories which is one of the best ways I learn. He is so great!!
Brother Bean is awesome! I loved his interpersonal theory and practice class so much that I am currently in his conflict management class which is just as good!
Brother Bean was one of the few professors at BYU-Idaho that I felt like really helped me have have multiple transformative experiences. The tests are pretty tough, but if you've taken good notes and studied with a group, you'll know everything you need to know. I would recommend taking all of the classes you can from him.
Fun teacher! You need to pay attention to basically everything he says. All the small details matter, which can be a little frustrating at times. He loves his stories and is a very fun guy.
You gotta know the details. His tests are almost always over the details of that one thing he said once in that class a couple weeks ago if you know what I mean. He really does care about each student and knows them by name. The homework isn't too bad. 1 paper each week and a big project throughout the semester. Attendance is a must too!
I loved Bro Bean's class! He tells the best stories and isn't afraid of hard topics. He knows his material incredibly well and will absolutely talk to you and help you get the best grade possible.
Crazy work load. The man likes to tell stories about himself. This course feels more about him than the course work. Very self righteous. Pushes political and world views like they are truth rather than opinion. Funny enough, becomes VERY annoyed when students tell stories. Loves to be the center of attention. I wanted to enjoy this class.
I took Public Speaking from him back in January. He would often talk about his past. He is very set on having the class "dress to impress" even over Zoom. He was not very understanding of students with health issues that required them to miss class. You have to be there no matter what. I ended up having to drop the class due to health issues.
Bro Bean's class is a wild ride - he loves his stories and will keep you entertained, but the tests are no joke. Definitely use Unstuck AI and the class textbook to stay on top of things.
I really enjoyed the content that we learned in this class. It is very applicable. Brother Bean is an engaging teacher and does well bringing the gospel into class. This class did seem a little more rigorous than most 100-level courses. I could see if someone took this as an elective, they would've been surprised by the amount of work required.
I took COMM 150, COMM 450 and Brother Bean oversaw my capstone project! I loved his classes and he took time to answer questions and help with anything!
He is awful. Don't take this class, take it with Brother Judkins. Brother Bean is self-absorbed and likes to talk the entire class period, so if you think you're taking this class because it is going to be fun and you will learn to communicate better, think again.
There aren't a lot of assignments but the midterm is a huge part of your grade and he expects you to fail it. He does allow you to make corrections on it but only gives half credit back. He uses made up terms and puts it on the test after using the phrase once. He called them “bean-ism”. He tells a lot of stories that aren't relevant
The lectures were story-based which was great but concepts were questionable in their applicability. It was very frustrating as the midterm is heavily based on it. It was misleading as the midterm was based more on vocab than concepts despite him stating it was essay based. Walked away from the class not feeling like I learned much.
He's a good professor and means well, but he's just a complicated "teacher." If you want your professor to have every assignment on Canvas, pick another professor. He gives out assignments in class that he won't put on Canvas.
I took an online conflict resolution course designed by Brother Bean, and it's the worst college class I've ever taken. The weekly assignments were long—often exceeding 1,500 words. I wanted to learn the principles in this course, but the workload was unreal. Other 400-level classes I've taken have taught me more in less time. Avoid Brother Bean.
I took the freshman communications class from Bro. Bean. It was SO good. He expected us to come to class prepared. There were quizzes in each class that encouraged us to come prepared. That was hard, but it helped me get so much out of the class. In class was SO fun. We laughed, cried, discussed, collaborated, role-played.
