Very good professor. Talks quickly, but if you can keep up, he's great. He's also really hot! *ahem* but despite that, he's a good teacher and hysterically funny. Highly recommend him.
One of my favorite classes at ball state. I enjoyed every second of his class. There aren't many classes at ball state where you get to watch movie clips from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
I expected to learn something useful from this class, such as how to write decent lab reports and scientific papers. Instead, we sat around watching random clips from Kevin Smith and David Lynch films… He's entertaining, but I didn't get much out of the class.
This class was interesting, but we rarely talked about English, which is odd for an English class. His assignments are creative, and therefore, more bearable to write than your normal English essay. I enjoyed the class... but didn't learn much.
Brent's class was a lot of fun. His assignments are really creative and I think he focuses more on getting to know yourself as a writer and exploring than the technicalities. Go to class; he will keep you entertained and doesn't grade too hard if you just do what he asks. Very fun and very easy.
Brent Blackwell is one of Ball State's finest. He relates to us in a way no other teacher can. He's very popular at Ball State for this reason. Everyone love him!
Heck yes Dr. Blackwell rocks!
Heck yes Dr. Blackwell rocks!
Brent is a great professor. While in his class, ou will ask yourself how he ever became a professor, but he accomplishes what he intends to in the class. In my class, it was his choice to get us to interact and give opinions and have large discussions ab
Huge crush on this man..great professor, great guy, learned a lot as well!
Amazing
No Comments
brent is cool.. he is not like most profs. he cuses in class and dresses in jeans and a button down shirt. he is laid back. he is very helpful with helping you improve your writing skills.
If this man wasn't married, he would be to me.
Brent is an amazing professor. i'm sad i won't have him for next semester
he is the coolest teacher ever and he may be un-professional but he has a reason to be.....it makes it so students feel more comfortable around him and he cuses to keep kids listening to him and jokes around a lot....he is basically a teacher that never wants to leave college
HATED every moment with him!
Second best English teacher I've ever had. His teaching style is informal and that's exactly the way I like it. A cool guy, a fun class to attend, and I definitely got a lot out of it. I definitely recommend him.
Loved his class! He is not your normal English professor type, which makes it great! He acts more like a student than a professor. But he makes the class fun and is real enjoyable! The assignments are not too hard, but it seemed like most of the stuff you do don't really relate to English. I recommend having him as your professor!
Fun guy to learn from. Teaches a lot of stuff that you wouldn't get otherwise. My only complaint is that the class I took was "reading and writing about lit." and he didn't actually tell us how he wanted our papers written until the final one. He is rather strict on what he wants in the papers regardless of what he says in class.
Assignments are very weird and really none of his business. He is a cool professor tho. Would take his class again if i had the chance.
Brent is an awesome teacher! He is helpful, knows his stuff, and will make sure the class is easy for you. You can also learn a lot of life lessons from him, great guy, and is the best teacher I have ever had in my life hands down!
interesting class
He gives out a lot of assignments, but the lectures are usually good.
Great Professor! Really interesting topics and keeps your attention in class. Writing topics were fairly easy, consequently, he grades a little on the tough side. One of my favorite classes I've taken. If you can get him, take him.
incredible at associating concepts and bringing them home and making them relevant
If any one is looking for an elective and interested in the Holocaust take this course with Dr. Blackwell. Awesome teacher really knows his stuff about many aspects of the war pre WWII and post WWII. It was an english class when I took it but not sure what its under now. But def a good class to take.
Great professor. Loved his class recommend it for everyone. Not to mention he's super hot! :)
his class was good, and he's a good teacher, but was completely unprofessional. He curses like a sailor and is very crude all around. If this bothers you, don't take his course!
Blackwell is the best English teacher I've ever had. He is interesting, class is laid back, assignments teach you a lot, but are not too hard. He is awesome, but not for everyone, he often swears in class and makes jokes that may offend some people. If you can handle him, he is worth trying to have as a prof.
He was awesome! I think that he was a totally the coolest guy.
Really cool dude. If you are a laid back person and like interesting conversation. Take Blackwell
I loved Blackwell! He expects a lot from you, but his class is super fun. I was never bored and missed him when the semester was over.
so funny, and his class is extremely interesting. he really knows his holocaust stuff. I didnt read a single book for the class and i still got an A because I was so absorbed in everything he talked about. awesome prof and awesome class!
Very laid back. Works with you. Pretty funny. Language can be a little vulgar. Group work. Pretty awesome.
Awesome professor. I didn't care that much about English but I wanted to come to class everyday so I didn't miss out on anything funny that Brent said. Also, he lets you call him Brent which is cool. He's not too rough of a grader either.
Pretty epic teacher. He's nice and explains exactly what he wants and how to do it easily. Sure he is a grammar nut but arn't all english teachers? He even knew what cosplay was which easily made him my favorite teacher this semseter. If you get him you totally just won the english teacher jack-pot.
Dr. Blackwell has an extremely unorthidox method of teaching, this is for sure. However, it works and it keeps the students attention and he gets his point across. He's always very helpful and more often than not, meeting with him turn away from academics and into casual conversasion. I found that this just made him that much easier to talk to.
Take his 189 class on Israel/Palestine conflict! it's HARD but it teaches you so much about something you really need to know. He's extremely knowledgable, helpful, funny, and laid-back. One of the best classes I've had at Ball State.
One of the best profs @ BSU. Attendance is important. But if you apply yourself you will get an A. Language can be vulgar for some, but I considered it a breath of fresh air. I plan on taking more courses from him.
Wonderful teacher! He is incredibly honest and if you can get into his class consider yourself extremely lucky!
I took HON189 with him as well and loved it. There are daily assignments, but no tests in 296 and only one in 189. He's really funny and communicates difficult information very well. He is the best prof. I've ever had.
He's a fun professor and his lectures are easy to sit through. He's a hard grader though so be prepared to work hard.
Blackwell is a great professor! He communicates difficult subjects clearly and is very helpful.
Very good instructor and he teaches a very intersting Honors class on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. Learned a lot I didn't know beforehand. The midterm is difficult and a lot a knowledge is thrown at you but if you want to learn about this conflict, his is the class to take.
Blackwell is an amazingly engaging professor, and I will find a way to take another class from him, even if I have to audit it. If you can find a way to take his class, take it. Best professor I've had thus far.
I had him in ENG 103 and loved him. In 104 he is not helpful at all. His notes do not pertain to the assignment we are supposed to be working on. He grades things lower than they should be and does not give alot of direction.
He grades your rough drafts like your actual paper, which can hurt your grade if you aren't careful. You are allowed to miss three classes but can't make up the work you missed. He cusses a lot and his notes don't help with the assignments.
I had him for an honors history course. The only homework was reading, with a short easy quiz at the beginning of each class over said reading. There are four papers that make up 20% of your grade, with the other 20% being the quizzes. Papers are done in partners. No final exam, no homework. GREAT professor, makes the class interesting.
This guy knows how to teach, but you can't be afraid to go up to him and ask for help. I had a head injury that held me back from working, and he took the time to talk to me, set up meetings to talk, and adjust the material required to suit my needs. He is extremely nice, very smart, and can teach very well. If you have trouble just ask for help
I adored having him as an honors professor. If you can't handle potty mouths or vulgarity, this class is not for you. But for most, it's totally fine and makes him somewhat more relatable to his students. I strongly recommend taking any honors class with Dr. Blackwell.
Literally the funniest guy ever. I love his sense of humor. The class is pretty much partner projects and a few 5 point papers. No final. I never read for the class and did fine.
Brent is awesome. He makes class fun and I was super interested!! Attendance is somewhat mandatory, but he takes it quietly so you never really know. He gives out a lot of 5 and 10 point assignments...DO THEM! they will help your grade. No final :) or midterm!
I would recommend not having him as a professor. His grading is awful and his assignments are difficult to understand. He is a funny guy but his teaching methods are horrible. I would recommend finding a different class.
Excellent teacher. Professional yet not uptight! I would highly recommend him for any english class you are taking at Ball State.
I ended up switching ENG 104 classes because his class was confusing and difficult to understand. If you are not a strong writer, I would recommend a different class.
Teaches you everything you need to know for college and life itself. You can come out of his class feeling like your brain is fried in the best kind of way. A teacher who cares that his students know what they really need to for college. Tells the truth about the college system. No tests. Easy grades if you are good with the subject & do the work.
Best english class I've ever had. He's professional but laid back and makes class very fun and easy to pay attention to. He's sort of a tough grader, but if you don't skip the smaller assignments, you'll do fine. I definitely recommend this class to everyone.
Brent is a great professor, hardest part is the grading. So long as you are willing to talk to him about your paper and write multiple drafts though, it's not too bad. Assigns a lot of reading, Iliad in a week and a half, Aeneid in a week and a half, Bible in a month, quizzes over every reading. Still would recommend.
Funny and insightful, a great professor through and through
There is tons of surface-level love out there for this professor, which makes sense due to the four month total most students have to spend with him. However, his novelty as a bombastic, laissez-faire professor with high energy wears off right around the time you realize he doesn't actually support any of his "facts" in lecture. Don't be fooled.
His class lectures are sometimes really interesting. However, be ready to write pages and pages and pages. Also, there may be at least one group project that can potentially be really awful.
I enjoyed the class, but Blackwell is brilliant and a bit over my head. It seems like other students in the class felt similarly. It was a humanities course and we frequently talked about math and science. It was also very difficult to keep up with the reading.
His classes are interesting, but if you aren't a strong writer I would be apprehensive about getting above a C in class.
Dr. Blackwell knows what he's taking about, but it's impossible to follow what he's saying. He grades pretty tough and his instructions on the projects are so broad and aren't specific enough to know what he wants. His lectures are so one-sided and biased, that if you feel differently, you're considered wrong.
He's a very cool prof. I had him for an 8 am and he was super understanding about how early it was. Good feedback, great lectures, and discusses interesting topics. His assignments are designed to make you a better writer and prepare you for future assignments. Super understanding about late work but attendance is a must. Low attendancepop quiz
A lot of reading. Very few quizzes but four projects make up 80% of your grade. Very good professor and is very passionate about his topics. I also asked him at the end of the semester if there was anything I could do to get from an A- to an A (the difference in Dean's list or not in my case) and he gladly allowed me to make up points. Verdict: A+
Definitely be ready for group projects they are a must. When you write papers and do projects, I highly recommend including your opinions and reasoning. If your not sure what he wants, just email him (not the night before). I'm taking his HONR 202 class and intend to take him for HONR 203.
Grades received are person specific. Grades received are also topic specific, if he does not like your topic you will not receive a good grade on your papers. Is not clear at all on what he wants on your daily homework assignments and give you a full point out of five off if you miss one thing he didn't even specify.
While the class is sold as discussion-based, it mainly revolves around a lecture that may of may not have much to do with the reading. The projects vary from nigh impossible to busy work, often leaving a disgruntled feeling. There was one quiz over the reading that could be passed with SparkNotes. Information given in lecture is an ok introduction.
He is amazing at what he does! He related english and rhetoric back to things that college kids understand. We spent an entire class venting about things we dislike about colleges then he related that back to a paper for us to write about it. Awesome prof. Awesome guy. Be ready to participate it makes the class better
I really enjoyed this class. It will totally challenge you, and you will have some sleepless nights. I can honestly say that I learned some important things from him. His lectures are lengthy, but contain important information that will help you to get better grades on papers and projects. You will most likely have 3 papers & a big group project.
Very lecture heavy for an honors class. He does let you speak & hold a discussion, but he seems determined to get thru each of his PowerPoints. There's assigned readings for each class, but the discussion usually strays away from them. The projects are easy; some can be done the night before they're do. I'd prefer to take a different professor.
His lectures are very interesting, but can take a few days to process. He knows what he's talking about, but when he answers questions, he tries to answer as the person the class is based on for that day, not his own view. He does major projects for the grades with a few tiny things just as fluff. Be prepared for partners & groups in all 3 honors.
Hes super easy to get ahold of outside of class. Just shoot him an email. Also he answers any question and doesnt act like youre stupid for asking anything ! Super chill in class !
Lately he's been making comments about how honors students are better than others & it's been a huge turn off... he said, "the rest of them are going to be struggling to make mortgage payments *pointing at the hallway*"... Class could've been better. His project guidelines aren't super clear but you can figure it out. Easy A-/A.
he's not too strict on attendance but i recommend going as he doesn't post any of his lectures and you miss a lot from one absence. hes a pretty cool guy but he's not very clear in what he wants from most assignments. there's homework assigned almost every class. don't bother buying the book we didn't use it once.
Don't take his class unless you're a pretty good writer. He gives good feedback, but you have to work for the grade he gives you.
Brent is an overall pretty cool guy. He gives mini homework assignments every class, but there are only 4 papers total throughout the semester. DO NOT buy the textbook!! We never used it. He can be pretty vague with instruction but he is more than willing to help you out! You may not want to take his class if you are not a strong writer...
Blackwell is a really nice professor but I don't recommend taking his 8am class because that was brutal. Can be a boring class because it is a required class but he's a great teacher and makes the best of the class and gives interesting material and homework.
He has pretty interesting lectures and most of class is open for discussion. He assigns homework almost every class and usually there is in class points for group work. He doesn't post homework online so go to class. I recommend going to his office hours for the major papers because he is very helpful. Don't buy the book, we didn't use it.
Blackwell is a quirky guy which to some might get annoying, but I personally thought he was a funny guy. The work isn't hard, there's just kinda a lot; kinda like busy work homework. Overall would select him for ENG 103.
Love him! Easy class overall, just show up and listen to his lectures. He talks to as a person and not just a student and I appreciated that.
One of the best professors out there. He gives lots of homework, but it is beneficial to your grade and helps when it comes to writing papers. He answers emails very quickly and is very understanding. If you have the opportunity, take his class!!!!
AMAZING PROFESSOR
Blackwell is an interesting man. He is very nice and his lectures are very interesting. He really makes you think and puts ideas in your head you probably wouldn't expect out of an english class. You do get homework to do for the nest class almost every week however, This is easy. GO TO CLASS there are also small assignments you get in class!
Unclear with what he wants in assignments; some of the writing assignments are a little too difficult/confusing for a 100-level class. I can understand why he wants to give us this material, but I consider myself a strong writer and he docks points for so much.
Dr. Blackwell is a great guy and I liked him as a teacher. Although there are in class assignments everyday, which if you show up to class they are basically free points, and usually homework assignments after every class. 4 papers total, lots of group work, so find a good group and stick with them. Put in effort and do the work and you'll be fine
Literally this dude was a jerk. He seems nice and knows what hes talking about, but like, the entire class is one group project with LONG papers on the same topic. I missed class once and my grade tanked. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF UNLESS YOU WANT TO WORK YOUR BUTT OFF so many outside group meetings, lots of work.
I respect his method of teaching and he has engaging lectures but he grades way too hard for a 100 level class. Also he does not accept late work at all and there is an assignment due every class. Half of the class is also a big group project. Would not recommend unless you are willing to put in extra work, which you shouldn't for a 100 level.
He has engaging lectures, but they never helped for hw or papers. Extensive assignments due every class, and usually the assignments are unclear and don't make sense. VERY group heavy class. Every paper you write is over the same topic. Papers are way too hard for a 100 level class. He gave us 2 days to write an 8 page paper. Never posts hw online.
The best professor I have had. Lectures were always very intriguing and enjoyable to sit through. A great guy, highly recommended taking
Assignment do every class. He does not accept any late work. You have to be in class to receive his homework. He grades easy when group work is done in class and on his homework, but grades papers really hard. 104 was set up as a weighted grade system. 40% HW, 10% paper one, 15% paper two, 20% paper 3 (group paper), 15% presentation (group work).
I tend to struggle with writing in the first place, but I really enjoyed Dr. Blackwell's lectures and paper assignments. The class was focused on relevant current events and prompted me to do a lot of thinking. He grades pretty hard, but is very understanding, gives good feedback, and always responds to emails way faster than I expect.
He seems like a great guy but really sucks. His lectures are pretty political so if you dont like that definitely get out of the class because each class it gets worse and the lectures dont really relate to the hw or papers. Lots of group work.
He is very political and makes sure you know he is. He is the worst professor I've ever had. Would not reccomend taking this class with him.
Dr B's class was always interesting, but if you're not a strong writer you'll struggle. That said, he gives detailed feedback and will meet w/ you on Zoom to discuss specifics and how to get a better grade. Requires u to turn in drafts as grades so don't wait until last minute and actually try. There was a lot of group work, so meetings are a must.
Blackwell is super fun and he doesnt give a lot of homework. However, the projects can be pretty grueling sometimes.
He seems like a nice guy but he managed to talk about sex and sexualized women in every single class, which seemed out of place for a gen ed English course. His lectures seemed unnecessary and can be political at times. Lots of homework and doesn't give you very much notice for when papers are due.
Seems like a nice guy, but not the greatest professor. He gives an unnecessary amount of homework. He makes them difficult for no reason when they do not need to be. He grades super heavy on the papers and you can't even read his feedback because his handwriting is bad. Makes the class unreasonably hard for a 100-level course.
Really nice guy. Daily assignments are excessive and take a long time. He doesn't always give good feedback so it will mess with your grade. Don't take this course if you have a heavy workload with other classes!
I think he is a really great professor but at times he can seem a bit elitist. At one point during our Honors lectures, he said that honors college students are alphas and students not in the honors college are betas. While he might have not meant it in that way, sometimes he can seem a bit narcissistic. That being said overall, I loved his class.
Nice guy but not a good teacher. Says u need a textbook but besides 1 assignment u don't need it. Lectures don't make any sense and are about things not at all related. Super political and spends the majority of lectures talking ab politics or nonsense. Daily assignments but u won't learn what to do until after u turn it in :) 4 papers but not bad.
Blackwell is a great guy and a great professor, I would definitely take him again. His lectures are thought provoking and overall interesting, but he is a tough grader so if English isn't your strong suit then I would maybe chose another professor.
Dr. Blackwell was a really great guy and professor to have. His lectures were engaging and I enjoyed writing the papers in his class. The class is a lot of busy work, and we only use the textbook like once (it's only 15 dollars) but it was nice having him as a professor last semester.
Blackwell was cool enough but all of his lectures are political. The lectures also feel like he is rambling most of the time and he doesnt really cover much on the upcoming essay we have to write. Also, he requires you to write an argumentative essay over White Noise which is a pointless book. I feel like I have no idea what I am doing in class.
Blackwell's classes always got me thinking and having existential crisis' honestly. 4 main papers and various small assignments throughout the semester. He gives a lot of freedom in what you write about. You need to have a copy of White Noise but that's really it.
Professor Blackwell is a very heavy "lecture" professor. He lectures about things that have no context to the actual classroom. When given essays, he does not tell you what to write about, what he expects, or the content of the writing course. You have to figure out everything on your own in this class. As a person he is okay I guess. Wouldn't take
Dr. Blackwell is incredible. Had him for 201, 202, 203 and would take more if I could. His lectures were engaging and if you put forth effort, you got an A+. He encourages you to expand your horizons and try things outside your comfort zone, no hand holding. Changed the way I viewed my college experience for the better.
The class is overall good, I chose him as my 104 professor. There will be homework, but it is easy. You do have to come to class, but if you have to miss and let him know he is super chill about it. His grading is super clear, and he is available for help. This was an easy course and you should pass as long as you do your work.
Dr. Blackwell is a great professor. You will have number of essays to write but its an English class so what do you expect? He gives a lot of freedom on what to write about so you can really write about anything that interests you. He usually makes you submit a rough draft for every essay but gives great feedback on all of them.
He thinks he is Flecher from whiplash. Assigns an incredible amount of work. Like at least 1 hour per class if you take him Tuesday Thursday. My girlfriend took him for 114 and he teaches the exact same curriculum of 104, same assignments and all. Some assignments such as assignment 10 are actually more work if you take 104, than 114.
He gives a lot of lecture about his perspective. I didn't like that because I would have different interpretations on readings. The discussion part of the class is outside of the classroom; you have a busywork group assignment due every class. Making sweeping generalizations is a big part of his lecture and assignments. Not a fan but easy to pass
I really enjoyed his class and his lectures, he did a very good job of presenting what he wants from you as a student. You are given a lot of freedom. He does comes with some downsides as you will be forced to write A TONNNN of papers and his assignments are long and a drag, but it's English, what can you expect? Cancelled the last 2 weeks of class
I love Doc B he is very funny, his lectures are interesting, they bounce all over the place but in a beautiful way that honestly makes a lot of sense. I recommend him fully. You do have homework before every class but it helps you get in the mindset of the next assignment/lecture. Doc B is a great professor.
He was a very good professor that talked about important topics.
The goat - don't be intimidated at the start of the semester if you feel like his rapid-fire fast-paced style of lecturing is difficult to follow. Stuff will go over your head at first but you'll get used to it. He does a great job in terms of explaining and clarifying concepts which is helpful when the readings get tough (Kant/Foucault).
The professor assigns a lot of work, but Unstuck study was a big help for study prep. Lectures can be political, but engaging with the content makes the class worthwhile. Tough grading, but a good challenge if you're willing to put in the effort.
While I think Blackwell is a good guy, I was oftentimes dumbfounded by his views on Christianity and other major religions. Much of what he taught about Christianity was false and skewed to make Christianity look bad. This is worrisome because in a class about ancient cultures and religion, it is important to approach it from an unbiased viewpoint.
He talks a ton, but it all makes sense and is valuable information. He does assign quite a bit of work, but it is all decently useful. He is extremely kind and understanding. Just communicate with him and he will be sure to help you out! Don't skip class though...
Don't take English with Prof Blackwell if you don't like politics.
Pretty much every class I would find myself thinking “how on earth did we get to this topic in English class?” A lot of things he discussed I thought were redundant to the topic at hand. However, he's a nice guy and very intelligent even though I don't agree on a lot of his viewpoints.
He's precise and kind. I think he truly wants students to leave with an education and a new understanding of the world.
Dr. Blackwell was excellent with accommodations and genuinely committed to making his class accessible. He sometimes went on tangents that were not directly related to the material, but he is still a solid lecturer who says genuinely interesting things that make you think. Be prepared for a heavy homework load.
Prof Blackwell is funny and seems like a good guy; however, the course focuses a lot on politics, and I feel it wasn't necessary for the material. He is very lecture-heavy, and there were 2 assignments a week. Near the end of the semester, group work was mandatory. there are no tests. Overall, did not enjoy this class. I didn't get much out of it.
