Gilchrist has a unique knowledge of Canadian history and politics of which we are frequently unaware. He goes to great lenghts to be helpful to students, and is very learning-oriented. Above all, he is an enjoyable professor.
He is a super nice guy. I really miss him. His stories are the best! I hope he is doing well.
Gilchrist is the bomb diggity. Lectures are entertaining, and he can almost always tie hockey into something political. Tests are easy, quizzes are off the lecture (which he repeats every class, so it's not hard to ace). Come to lecture, get an A.
While his lectures can be fun, they are often off topic. It's too bad he doesn't do most of the grading, because the Nazi TA's will rip you a new one. Class is too large to be effective.
Gilchrist is incredibly unclear and disorganized. Go to the TAs for help on how to do well on tests and organize study groups. Gilchrist told the same stories over and over again while he should have been giving us more substance.
Gilchrist is awesome. I hated his class at first, but by the third week of the semester, I really got into it and it became my favorite class. He is an energetic and entertaining lecturer, he repeats answers to quizzes and tests in class multiple times, so just attend lecture and you're fine.
He's a great teacher who loves the subject. He is excited about the subject material and makes difficult concepts easy to understand. Like most large classes at BYU, the TA's control the grading. One of the best teachers in the Poli Sci department, hands down.
An interesting class made tedious through disorganized lectures and tests based on whether or not you can memorize certain "magic words". If you take this class, make SURE you go to the TA sections where all of the magic words are discussed. His course is pure academic bulimia at its finest.
Prof. Gilchrist is great. Hilarious lectures, though sometimes off-topic and repetative. Really interesting material for the class. Quizzes were easy; tests were much tougher (long essays rather than multiple choice), but TA help is there if you care to use it (I didn't, so I really can't complain).
The words I would use to describe Dr. Gilchrist are the same as the definition for "in vogue": cool, dandy, favored, fresh, glorious, groovy, in demand, just out, keen, latest, marvelous, neat, new, nifty, peachy, popular, sought-after, super. Can't wait to have his forthcoming book signed! H
This class is engaging, but Gilchrist often is unclear and vague (but that's philosophy for you). Make sure to attend labs and work with TAs. Tests really suck in this class, though I must admit they are a good measure of what you've learned in this class.
Cool guy, funny stories, and really not all that hard. Take him--especially his honors sections. Cool guy, really, and he really loves and understands what he teaches.
One word Canadian. Wasn't overly knowledgeable about the topic. Didn't study as many phil as you would in another 202 class. Quizes are easy. Really picky about vocab. (he has his own def)Hard to meet w/. Disorganized Often tries to tie in gospel topics where they don't fit (mach vs millen society)
One of my favorite teachers at BYU. He knows his stuff but puts it in layman's language. Lectures are funny without trying to be and his Canadian side is an extra funny perk. Great to meet with. He's really passionate about what he knows.
Don't bother with the class. Just go to TA sessions, memorize what they tell you to do, then regurgitate for the tests. If you go in understanding that you will, in the end, learn nothing and not be rewarded for any independent thought, you'll probably do well. Just go, sit down, give the answers you know they want to hear, and leave.
Check your brain at the door and you'll be OK. The class comes down to memorizing what the TAs tell you and writing it verbatim on tests, writing essays on topics he perscribes with precisely the slant he wants to see (don't use any interpretation other than his), a few pointless quizes, and the same stories over and over again. Gets boring fast.
Very smart entertaining teacher (canadian), but when it comes down to your grade, follow the TA's, your grade is dependent on how well you can regurgitate what the TAs tell you on the tests, which are essays.
Yummy!
He was the only reason I went to class. American Histort = boring, but the Canadian made it worthwhile. A good teacher.
His tests were hard because all the questions were from a test bank. Pay attention to the power points and what he says, but he's really great and tries hard to make things interesting. I enjoyed the clips he showed in class! He listens to all opinions is is a pretty good teacher.
He tells great stories and relates things well. The tests are hard, but it IS american heritage.
His lectures are fun and interesting. i always wanted to go to class. the tests are impossible (but that's true in any Am Htg class). go to the TA review labs. the essays are simple but seem pointless. overall, this is a class that you have to get over with, and Gilchrist makes it more enjoyable. he is a funny Canadian.
I HATE American History, but I LOVED this class! Entertaining and clear lectures, fairly easy textbook reading (not too dry), but horrible tests - but all AHTG tests are awful, my parents hated them back in the 60's! He's got so many great stories that really help clarify the concepts; the time just flys by. And he's Canadian. Amazing!
I love going to this class!! The tests are very hard like any other American Heritage class, but he makes them worth it. He is hilarious and really knows what he is talking about. I also loved getting the Canadian prespective for an American history class.
I have never met a teacher who cares so much about his students! It's great! He wants you to learn, and he's willing to help you. Plus, he's funny! He makes American History interesting, and if you put for the work, you'll be able to do well!
Gilchrist told awesome stories and showed lots of illustrating video clips. I still fell asleep a lot though. But he was one of my favorite teachers first semester. He genuinely cares and wants his students to do well, and he wasn't as hard as the other A HTG teachers, from what I heard.
pro. gilchrist is an awesome teacher! he truly cared about his students and wanted you to do well. He teaches creatively and his lectures are interesting. I learned a lot and was really proud of america's heritage. he's canadian and really admires america's founding also. its hilarious when he makes fun of canada. you need to go to lecture
Go to class. Great teacher. I really learned a lot from this class. Go to the TA lab. Prepare to fail the test, because everyone does. The curve at the end is a saver.
I loved this class! Prof. Gilchirst gives amazing lectures. go to lecuture because you will be entertained, and tested over that material as well as the material in the book. I liked how the course wasn't strictly about memorizing facts. We learned facts, and learned how they can be applied to America's heritage, ideals, etc. Two thumbs up!!
Read the chapters in the main textbook (don't worry about just and holy principles). Do well on the easy assignments-- papers and quizzes and essays on tests. don't be alarmed if you do bad on the multiple choice on tests.. the grade is curved at the end. the class gives you a broad perspective and is interesting. Good job Gilcrest.
American Heritage is an interesting class, and i learned a lot. The quizzes and papers are fair, but the tests will eat you alive; luckily there is a curve. Gilchrist is a great guy and very knowledgable. His lectures are important to attend- the power points are spotty and give little information.
The tests were a little challenging, but come on it's American Heritage!! If you're willing to study Professor Gilchrist will be willing to help you. His class was very interesting, as long as you have to take American Heritage you might as well take it from Gilchrist!!
Gilchrist rambles about Canada and Hockey most of the time. Your performance on tests depends on your ability to write - verbatim - what TAs tell you in their study sessions (which are poorly scheduled). Independent thought is punished - write what Gilchrist and TAs tell you or else. Horrible proffesor - just hope he doesn't get tenure!
I actually really enjoyed this class. Prof Gilchrist made lectures interesting and they were pretty easy to pay attention to. Tests were hard, but apparently all American Heritage classes are like that (don't worry the class is curved) pay attention in class, keep up on the readings, and do the assignments and you should be fine
Dr. Gilchrist is nice and knowledgeable, but the class was kind of a mess. We never got to the point in any discussion. I wish he had been better at sticking to a topic. The readings were very interesting, but the class was all over the place. One midterm, an exam, a presentation, and a 12-14 page research paper.
Not only did I take 201 from him but I also took 322. He's the best professor of Political Philosophy at BYU. His way of testing is so fair and really makes sure you leave the class with take home messages. He is one of the easier teachers in the PLSC department but in no way is he easy-easy. Just work hard.
Enjoyable until the grades come back.
The tests are rough, but that is how American Heritage is. His lectures were amazing, I learned so much and I was never bored! Just do the papers and study for the tests and you'll love the class!
The class was very interestin and thee papers are quite easy to accomplish. The class consistes of student debate. Gilchrist will work with the students
He was useless. He didn't know what he wanted. He failed one of my papers and made me rewrite it. I did, he failed it again. I handed in the original paper unchanged and he gave me a B on it. I got A on all exams. He still gave me a C+. He doens't know what he wants. He's an idiot. Real Poli Sci majors won't like this class.
The last rating is a joke, Gilchrist is by far the most reasonable professor in the department! He truly wants you to do well and will work with you till you accomplish that. Deadlines are always flexible, the focus is on learning. Dont have to read everything, go over your papers with him before you turn them in, and by attention and youll be fin
Very good professor, clear in his teaching, and makes you interested in what he as to say.
Gilchrist is a great teacher AND a great person. He makes difficult concepts easy to understand and he's one of the most reasonable professors I've ever met in my three years at BYU.
Great Professor, he actually cares a lot about his students, even in a big class. He is very willing to work with students on an individual basis. I learned a lot and gained a new prospective on professors ? they can actually care about us.
I will be the first to get in line and say Professor Gilchrist is a great guy. That being said, I needed more. His ppts lacked ANY words, and the pictures were unrelated, making review impossible. The blackboard quizes were way too stringent. If you mix up two words in an answer, it was wrong. He knows his stuff, he just can't seem to convey it.
He taught AHTG for international student. If the department decides to continue having international student section from now on you should take it from him! (of course you have to be an international student though) He is very flexible when we cannot turn the paper on time, or forget to take a test. exams are different from other sections

Take this class from him-you won't regret it. He is hilarious, fairly easy (I think I picked up the book maybe twice the whole semester and I'm on the brink of an A- B+...and if you're willing to put an hour outside of class a week in it you'll get an A no problem)...and he's interesting.
Gilchrist prefers dialogue & philosophy compared to textbook-bullet point lectures. One of the more "personable" professors meaning he is willing to work with students on an individual basis with their problems and questions. Very fair more than willing to meet halfway. Definitely recommend.
Dr Gilchrist's personable style and knowledge really made his class interesting. I got a lot out of talking to him outside of class about my research interests. He did a great job exposing us to important scholars in the field. That being said, the reading is challenging so plan on investing some time in this class to do well.
gilchrist is awesome, the class is great. however, if you struggle with writing maybe not the class for you because 50% of your gradae are essays. but still a great class. best lecturing professor i have ever had. i would have given him a 5 but those darn essay well get ya! the ta's grade em so be prepared to make new friends with your superiors
I loved this guy. He is hilarious and makes difficult concepts easy and fun to understand. He's lively and super cool. Essays and tests are a little hard so work with your TA so you can get a good grade.
This isn't the easiest class in the world, but Prof Gilchrist makes is enjoyable. He is entertaining in lectures, willing to work with you on a personal level and is very fair in his grading. I've never been in another class where a standing ovation has been given multiple times.
Gilchrist is a nice guy. His lectures are more interesting than most. That being said, his system is a little messed up. He claims at the beginning of the course that grading is standard among him and the TAs, but its not. Its impossible to explain what he wants in the papers, and the multiple choice parts seem to be purposely vague and confusing.
BEST PROFESSOR I have had. Everyone that I know that takes from him takes all of his classes just bc he teaches them, not bc of the class. Easy, but you learn so much. I leave every period feeling like the limits of my knowledge and understanding have been expanded. Fascinating classes, great guy, and he accepted all my assignments on the last day!
Capstone. All you HAD to do the whole semester basically was write your paper - and he met with each of us individually whenever we wanted his help. But the classes were super interesting, he tells a lot of personal stories and you learn a ton. Not like any other class you will ever take, different style, but everyone there loved it.
Gilchrist is great, very funny,I really enjoy his lectures, but having had 201/02 from him let me say in both cases the TA's sucked at grading according to the standards he gave the class. So if you wanted your papers graded fairly make friends with the TA's or get them graded by Gilchrist himself after the TA's screw it up
Gilchrist is a great professor. His main concern is that the students have learned something by the end of the semester. I've taken 201 and 202 from him and have loved the courses. I recommend this class to students in any major--you'll learn a lot about your own views on human nature, government, etc.
He seems like a nice guy who cares about his students. He responds to emails really quickly and will read through students' papers if sent to him in advance. The grading is weird, but he does offer some extra credit to offset his ambiguous quiz questions and unclear expectations.
Love this professor. Took 201 from him and planning on taking another class from him next semester as well. He makes political philosophers really clear and comprehensible. He is also great to work with. He is very flexible working with students and helping them with their needs for the class.
by far the most interesting lecturer that ive ever had. fascinating man. he cares about students and is very willing to work with you. great guy
Amazing professor. I really love the passion he has for his students and how insanely engaged he is in their learning process. He style of teaching made me fall in love with political philosophy (which I seriously thought impossible prior to this class!) If you have to take this GE, definitely take his class.
Prof Gilchrist is amazing! I really enjoyed this class because he seemed less concerned with grades and more with what you learned. The class is great because you learn to open your mind to different modes of thinking. As far as grading goes though, very easy, see TA's for the papers and you'll get A's.
You can tell that Gilchrist loves political philosophy. The course is fascinating and if you pay attention in lectures and skim the readings then your grade should be fine. The course is very unorganized though and he often goes off into tangents. So if these things bother you then you should look elsewhere.
Prof. Gilchrist is amazing. He honestly loves what he teaches. He can go on rants, but they are very interesting most of the time. He makes the class so much more relaxed by not being too hard on grades and due dates. Go to TA labs, and you will do great.
This is the first time in my four years at BYU that I am writing about a Professor on this website. Only because HE IS THE BEST! period!
Easy professor. Goes off on wild tangents. Some classes are not useful. Lab is where the learning occurs. Get a good TA for lab.
Great professor. Very helpful. If skim the readings and take good notes in class you will ace the tests and be able to write the papers no problem. This is a very easy class, but professor Gilchrist teaches it in such a way that you really feel like you are learning not just getting ready to barf things back up on a test.
For those who described his grading system as "ambiguous" or "messed up", they missed the point of his class. Gilchrist doesn't want you to read the syllabus and give him what he wants, he wants you to have an original thought and learn something. Not for students who want their semester spelled out for them.
Gilchrist is really a good guy, but not a good teacher. He wants to teach you about life, but just teaches nothing instead. Classes really felt wasteful. Grading was extremely unclear, and his assignments were jumbled. I would not recommend him as a teacher. But as like an uncle or something, I bet he would be great.
Take him while you can. Not your typical BYU prof, he's actually a normal guy. Sometimes hard to understand what the papers are expecting, but that's because we're used to professors holding our hands and telling us exactly what they want to see. Gilchrist promotes actually using your brain to draw conclusions from the material. I recommend him.
Often gave lengthy, off-topic personal stories, then try to relate it to political thought. If you memorize the online powerpoints, you'll ace the quizes but not the tests. No deadlines on papers. I turned mine in on the last week of semester and he LOST them! I have contacted him multiple times, resubmitted my papers and still do not have a grade.
Gilchrist is the hands down best teacher I've had at BYU. No he's not perfect but he recognizes that - AND the recognizes that not everyone who takes his class is going to be a PLSC major - ie he makes the class easy but informative. Easy A, but I LOVED going to class because between his hilarious stories and thought provoking questions I learned!
Great guy. Gets the typical Provo-republican-mormon to think. He plays devils advocate often and intentionally. I didn't agree with all of his opinions but they got my to think and that's what I loved. Hilarious stories. It was a relaxed and fairly easy class
Worst class I have taken at BYU!! Gilchrist is a great guy but he sucks at teaching! I went to class everyday and left wonderingwhy I bothered, he goes off on random tangents that have nothing to do with class. And the TA's are not very helpful, they have "lab times" but half the time they cancel them or dont show up.
Gilchrist is honestly fantastic. He goes on tangents, tells lots of stories, and turns a lot of the "organized" students off. But he has fascinating perspective and makes you want to learn more. More of a teacher than most, he's interested in you learning. His classes are not hard. HIGHLY recommended!
His tangents mean something, pay attention. Relates everything to modern problems. Very intelligent and flexible for his students. Funny.
What a guy! The stories he told are life changing. The way he can relate those stories to politics is amazing. He is brilliant. His quizzes are tough if you don't pay attention. Review power points for quizzes. Essays are graded tough, but if you get help from TA's you will survive. This class is so worth it USU. It was his last year at BYU. Bye!!
If you want to be entertained take gilchrist; however, if you want discussion and collaboration in thinking look somewhere else. Great guy but a overrated teacher or rated appropriately by those looking for fun. Just invest in TA time and use the "key" words get your grade to protect the GPA and get out.
Gilchrist was the best professor at BYU campus. The people that left the class confused or upset had their panties tied in so tight a wad they couldn't even see the brilliant way he wove personal interest into the learning process. He simultaneously makes philosophy simple and profound. What a guy!
I had this guy at USU. He shared way too many Mormon bashing stories that should be left out of a secular college course. The class was mostly a waste of my time.
I took this class at UVU as one of my GE. Show up to class, take good notes on his power points, read the chapters he assigns you to read, and you will pass the class. There really isn't any homework besides reading out of the textbook. Also, there is only about 2 test and the final through out the semester!
There was a LOT of reading but you don't really need to buy the required books, he provides almost all of it as PDFs online. He isn't a tough grader but he expects a lot out of your work. The assignements were 4 or 5 3-4 pg papers and he took the best 4, the final was 2 papers and that's it, if papers aren't your thing do NOT take this class.
Dr. Gilchrist knows his stuff about political science. He teaches and tests only important information on the subject, and you do not need to take notes because all the information you need is posted on canvas. He will answer questions, and help you out until you have a crystal clear understanding of what he is putting out. No assignments, 3 tests.
