The class is hard, although the teacher is very helpful. Very nice also (would buy us drinks/snacks on essay reading days). You are allowed to revise your essays and have them regraded as many times as you wish. An A is possible but it takes work.

such a GREAT teacher. he is ALWAYS willing to help and makes sure you are doing well in the class. he does expect a lot in his essays, but he will make sure to help you with that. i reccommend him!

Brent wants you to learn. He lets you revise papers until the end of the semester. Try to stick to the deadlines, revise, revise, revise, and an A is possible

Great communicator. Let's you know what he wants from your writings. Forces you to reveal your ability to command the language to show in your writing. Difficult, but very rewarding. I would not hesitate in taking his courses.

I took his class online and the material was easy to follow. He will help you whenever you need it and he's very open minded about paper ideas. He lets you know what to fix, what to add, and how to set up your paper. I would take him again...

He is so passionate about English and he let's you have open papers. He will grade them and hand them back, but you can revise as many times as you like. He is also very helpful.

difficult teacher

I took Brent's online class, and if you really want to LEARN how to write a good paper, then I highly recommend taking his class. He is probably one of THE best teachers at Palomar College. He cares about his students, is always helpful and wants you to succeed. He is NOT a spaz. He is passionate.

Very into his job. He takes the time to meet individually with each student for each paper you turn in. He doesn't look like he would have a Doctorate and may look like an 80's rocker, but he knows his stuff!

Awesome teacher. He will make you put the work in but it all plays off. By the end of his class you will be an excellent writer. Classes are interesting and he is extremely easy to approach and will help you tons.

Class requires a lot of writing. He's a real nice guy, grades papers pretty toughly though. Dont take the class if your not willing to spend a lot of time on each paper. Reminds me of highschool because of the 1 on 1 and the attention to individuals, and he learns names. hes pretty awesome.

Great Professor, highly recommended. Requires writing but he actually listens and takes into consideration things that you tell him. Left his class with a fond perspective of professors, him being my first college level instructor; sadly other instructors paled in future comparison.

If you want to learn how to write a paper. GOWEN IS UR MAN! I put my best into a paper, he hinted me on exactly what to do to make it more clear, then I would do my best again! the result was essays I was 100% proud of. I later took 202 from another professor and was disapointed for it did not come close to the standards I achieved in GOWEN'S class

Gowen is AWESOME, and really wants you to succeed in learning how to write an "A" paper. He gives you chances after chances to re-write in order to produce an "A" paper. He really cares about your success, and is by far, the BEST professor at Palomar College. GOWEN ROCKS!

Its true BEST English teacher ever, I had him for 3 semester thats how much I enjoyed the class, highly reccomend him for Enlgish. Grades essays as a professional but you truely learn how to write essays 100 better than before. Always there for you when ever you need him. Very open minded about subjects. Worth the wait if you cant get in the class.

Professor Gowen will challenge you to do you very best and he will be right there to help you in any way he can. His dedication is obvious and his is not bad on the eyes either!!

One of the nicest teachers I have ever had in my life. Professor Gowen is very intelligent and his classes were always a good experience. If all Professors were like Gowen. I think there would be a lot more college graduates and enlightened people in the world. A decent hard working teacher who will be willing to help you.

Great professor, your grade depends on you. He is always more than willing to help his students. I tok him for both of my English courses and was exremely satisfied with the results. Before Brent English was my leas favorite subject and my writing skills were below par. After his class I felt very comfortable with my writing skills.

Professor Gowen is an awesome teacher! If you have to take English 202, then take him. He makes you work hard, but it's definitely worth it. The class pretty much consists of writing four papers. He makes English fun and he loves it when his students get creative. ^_^

One of my favorite professors. By the second week of school he knew everyone's name; he really takes the time to get to know his students, and he is always in a good mood. He will push you to improve your writing, and is always willing to help! Take all of the classes he offers! It will do you good!!!!

very specific on essay's. basically your grammer needs to be perfect. also he LOVES english. great guy and helps tremendously.

Very clear about what you need to write about and what he expects of you. No busy work, just three papers and one research paper. He welcomes a lot of questions and is willing to help you. He guides you into the direction of what other English classes that you should take. He is extremely helpful. More like a counselor!

Great prof...what I always imagined a professor to be like.Very helpful & puts a lot of effort into guiding your essay revisions-except for the research paper-it's worth a lot &doesn't let us know where we stand w/his normal "preliminary grade".He'll ALWAYS find stuff to fix. My first B in an English class:( But,I do feel I'm a better writer now.

Absolutely Best Teacher ever!!! no tests, just hard papers, but he lets you do double revisions and only grades the second ones--plus he gives really clear comments on how you can fix the papers so you don't get stuck with a bad grade.

Professor Gowen is a really good teacher. He is so willing to help with revising essays. He cancels a week of class about three times during the semester for individual meetings to discuss the first draft of your essay. I would reccommend taking his class.

Helpful in essay feedback & is willing to help students improve. He gives an 'advisory grade' on the 1st draft, and grades according to how much you improve. Easy to pass but not an easy A - you have to do a lot of work, but definitely worth taking. 3 fairly short essays & a longer research essay. He's VERY ENERGETIC in the morning!

Great teacher. he only has you post journals once or twice a week that have to be 250+ words for homework. you will only have six essays to write, but he helps alot by correcting the first draft so you are sure to get an A on the final draft. wants you to learn by involving deep thinking. no tests just the final. overall easy A

Great professor! I think he grades hard but it's good because you need to learn to write well. He also gives an advisory grade to see where you're at. He cancels classes to meet with students. There are four essays I think and personal journals. I didn't particularly like the required readings but the book is cheap. Overall, great class!

I am so glad to have enrolled in his class because he is awesome. He loves what he does.He is a morning student so he's too happy all the time.This is one english professor that really cares about his students.He understands if you have a situation.You will regret it if you don't take him. Make office hours,talk to him about anything.

I have noticed that many people tend to complain about Dr. Gowen. He is an amazing professor. I admit that his class was hard, but what do you expect out of a COLLEGE level course, especially English. If you just want to take the easy way, don't take Dr. Gowen. I wish he would teach more college level English classes.

He is a really tough grader. If you're not a really strong writer take someone else because he will fail you.

Professor Gowen is so helpful with your papers. He is willing to meet anytime to help with your 4 papers. However, he is not an easy grader, so be prepare to put in some work. He really isn't that bad though. I'm horrible when it comes down to writing, and I ended up A's and B's on my papers!!!

I love this teacher! I never had a passion for English until I took him. We only had four essay papers for the semester. No quizzes/tests, just essays and a couple online responses. He is a tough grader on your essays, but he TELLS you what to improve on so there's no way you can get a low grade.. unless you didn't bother doing any corrections.

4 essays,22 journals. Class requires lots of reading for the journals, but some of them are actually interesting to read, & all you have to do is state your opinion on them and you get 100%. You have plenty of time to turn in essays, and he will check them for errors if you give it to him before the due date. correct it & U will get a higher grade.

I think it's hard to get an A but easy to get a B or a C. He's really helpful and whenever you need help, he always does his best to help you and will go all day trying to answer your questions. You write 4 essays and he cancels class to talk to you about your essays. So you know exactly what to do to get a good grade. I liked him a lot.

Gowen is an amazing teacher! He has nothing but the students best interest in mind. His class is not the easiest. But if you listen to his notes on your essays and fix everything, it is manageable. I had not taken an English class in three years and am not a very strong writer and still got an A. He wants to help as best he can. Need the textbook.

Professor Gowen is one I would recommend to anyone that wants to make sure they can write a correct college paper. If you plan on transferring to a four year school, he will really be the best help you can get. He loves the subject and he loves helping students to improve. patient and extremely helpful. Brent is a realy good teacher. he is very clear on what you need to do to get an A in his class. He makes sure you are ready for the final. You have to be stupid to not get A's on your papers. he gives you an advisory grade on the first test then sits down with you in privet to tell you what you need to do to bring your grade up to an A.

the only homework he would give was journals. theres kind of a lot of essays you have to write but you always turn in a rough draft and he meets with you to tell you what needs to be done to get and A on it. he even cancels class the week that follows to meet individually with all his students. he's a hard grader. but he's super nice and helpful

He's a lenient teacher that wants you to pass the class. We had a paper due every 2 weeks, and we had journals. If you do your homework and make an effort on your papers, you'll be able to pass with a good grade.

Took him over the summer, and I'm so glad I did. This is a high level English class so be prepared to do some writing, but otherwise he is an amazing teacher. He is flexible and easy to work with and it is obvious he genuinely cares about his students. Gives great feedback on all essay drafts and will work with you during office hours if needed.

pros: no class when you have individual meetings on your rough drafts he gives feedback on, last essay you can turn it in as many times (before due date) and he will make corrections to improve grade b4 you turn in final draft. cons: assigns journals on article your suppose to read for hw, reading out loud everytime and yes he picks on u to read

Professor Gowen was great! He cares for his student and wants to help his students with whatever they need help in. The class is pretty easy. We had 3 "out-class" essays and we have individual meetings with him before turning in the final draft which was pretty helpful. We did have to read out loud in class and write "in-class" essays.

After one class with Professor Gowen, I knew that I didn't want to be anything other than an English major, he is that good. Extremely intelligent but never condescending, Professor Gowen will make you a better, more whole person going forward, long after your college years.

Professor Gowen is very nice. He loves his subject which almost made me enjoy english. He grades not based on content but, grammar. If you are weak with grammar, don't take him. I don't feel like I learned much of anything from him, but I did enjoy his class. A lot of reading; interesting, yet irrelevant articles.

He grades tough on first draft but will allow you to turn in your paper as many times as you would like for a higher grade s long as you revise it. It is easy to get an A if you do this. Nice guy, gives alright lectures.

I loved having his class. He was very calm, and he enjoys the time he spends with his students. There is a lot of reading and the only homework usually assigned is reading and essay writings. I'd recommend him to anyone for an English class.

Professor Gowen is a very caring man, and he wants you to do your very best. Even though he gets sidetracked in class often, he sill gives good information in the classroom, and I always felt inspired to write something after class (I am not a writer). He is very easy to access after class, and will go out of his way to help you with an assignment.

I probably enjoyed Professor Gowen's class more than any other I've taken so far. He's very laid back and friendly, the typical classwork is mostly open-ended reading responses, and while he's no slouch on the papers, he makes a real effort to give you good, useful feedback and lets you turn in as many drafts as you want for a better grade.

A 4.6 review is very accurate for this gem of a dude. He has a great chill surfer vibe. My class had 21 journals of 250 words over the semester and 4 essays. The first is easy. The second one is rhetorical analysis, the third is an outline for the 4th one. The 4th is on a place/name and how significant it means to you. The class is good overall.

Professor Gowen has been so helpful with my English 50 class. He is very attentive and will always help you if you ask. He has made my writing so much better, and made me push out of my comfort zone. This was my first on campus class I took and he was really awesome! Definitely take him if you struggle in writing (or not) he's honestly the best

Pretty good professor. Really laid back and honestly can just wing the class but it's not wise to slack off either. Besides constant writing, he gives good feedback and is more than happy to meet out of class to help you improve in class. Lectures may be a bit boring and repetitive but really helps out when you need it.

Mr. G really cares about his students. I didnt need this class but I am glad I took it. I learned so much from him. Lost of essays, but he really works with you and helps you improve. Professor Gowen is very kind. You must write 4 papers in the class along with reading assignments. You will have chances to revise your papers and he will give you notes. Weekly journal entries, total of 5 essays. He is extremely helpful and caring! Will provide you with feedback after every essay to give you another chance to use his feedback to write a final draftA. Class ended early every time, and you skip every other week of class to have one on ones to discuss your essay! You won't regret taking his class.

Professor Bowen is such a positive, caring person and he really wants his students to succeed. 4 essays and there are journal assignments that count for your grade. There will be times when he gives the week of to go over your essay and he gives you plenty of time to revise and bring your grade up to an A. Always available and responds to emails.

hes a icon. He is so easy you basically write about anything you want. Easiest english class I ever took. Put effort in your writing and you will see a A. he let me turn my paper in a month after the due date and gave me a iconic grade. What can I say about the LIVING legend that is Brent Gowen? He is a great professor that genuinely wanted to help me better my writing. He gives the best feedback, so do not hesitate to ask him a question. You can tell that he cares about connecting with his students. Homework is often BUT it's easy. Readings with short free thought answers.

prof gowen class was probably the easiest English class I ever took. He won't let you fail. I turned in assignments almost a month overdue because he wanted me to get the best grade. all you do is 4 essays on basically any topic you want and journal entries. It is impossible to fail his class. I took his English 100 class

I would have to say Professor Gowen has been my favorite English teacher to come across. His essay topics were always interesting and gives awesome feedback. We mostly did journal entries as HW which I loved because it helped me become a better writer every time. :) HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Literally the best English professor. The sweetest, most understanding. But also really helps you improve your writing. You have to do work in this class but Prof Gowen is a gem, you won't regret taking this class!!!!

I really enjoyed Prof Gowen's English course and found him to be both likable and helpful. Over the course of the semester, we wrote 4 essays of which he created a sample essay for each and scheduled one on one meetings to give advice for a final draft, which was incredibly helpful. His feedback was always kind and open minded; great class!

Great teacher. Very communicative with students by having thoughtful responses to every single assignment and essay. The teacher encourages you to send an intermediate draft of your essay so he can pre-grade the essay before the final submission which makes essays much less stressful as he guides you through each session. Going to miss this class.
