Exam was very easy, and pertained EXACTLY to the outline he gave us on the last class. Would gladly take his class in the future. Very good distribution of marks: final essay, presentation, quiz and exam.
Loved this class and professor. I wasn't that interested in the outset, but Brent made the material interesting and relevant. He was a totally accessible prof and I really enjoyed the atmosphere in his class. Fair marker, interesting assignments, easy final. Also super adorable and loves reggae.
one of the best professors at the university. if by some chance he doesn't know the answer he will go out of his way to find out for you, made a 3 hour monday morning lecture more then tolerable.
Awesome prof. Take his classes-you'll learn and laugh your ass off while your doing it!
Nice guy, pretty easy class, but most of the time (with my experience) he would rather talk about his own interests than legitimate course content. If you like reggae, take the class
Great prof
grades and expectations were completely unclear, marks did not reflect expectations laid out in the syllabus, will never take a course by him again
The weekly in class reading quizzes (so attendance in every class is mandatory) are killer, even if you do the weekly 100-page readings that are required. The lectures are interesting and the content is not bad, but don't take this class expecting to do really well unless you have extensive background knowledge of rock 'n' roll and it's history.
Doesnt stay on topic. Talks about everything but the course material. Horrible
This prof is a good guy. Weekly reading quizzes which are completely fair. When I did the readings I got As, when I didn't or skimmed them, I obviously didn't do well. Midterm and Final were predictable but still on the tough side. He does go off topic at times, but learn to embrace it and you will really enjoy his lectures.
Awesome Professor, really likes talking about cocktail parties.
Dr. Hagerman was such a wonderful from who made a comfortable environment for us to learn and participate
He was an awesome prof. Very enthusiastic and his lectures were always entertaining. Definitely would take his class again.
Brent was such an amazing Prof!! I love he taught the course, I wasn't really interested in the class before hand, but he made me like it! He lectures are very interesting and we had class 8:30 MWF, so he kept us pretty alive for so early in the morning! If you are in his class, definitely go to the lectures almost everything is lecture based!!
Was very accommodating for special cases, which allowed me to pass the class. Talked about interesting topics in class and the lectures made the class fun.
Tough but fair.
Totally loved this class, it was always interesting and engaging. The work is reasonable and the mark I got in this class really helped my GPA.
For starting late was a very good professor. Was fair and was always reviewing what was required to be able to pass. Being there is necessary because of how the exams are ran. But other than that, very good overall :)
The lectures were very interesting. He gave very specific instruction regarding assignments.
He is very strict and he marks the essays really hard, he also doesnt encourage his students that they will do good in the course he puts you down and states that you will do worse on the 2nd essay then the first
really tough marker, tough quizzes that you need read through the entire book for only a 10 multiple choices quiz, rubrics were useless, even you did all follow rubrics you would still get lower grade than you thought.
Loved this class! Lots of reading so it does take some time, but if you read and attend lectures it's an easy A. Very interesting material. He's not trying to trick you, but read instructions carefully. Cares about his students and will say hi in the halls. Will definitely take again!
This class is interesting but so difficult. Lots of readings if you want to even come close to passing. Brent is great though!
Brent is a highly engaging prof who cares about his students and wants to get to know them. He doesn't post his slides online, so make sure that you go to class or get notes from someone else. There's a fair bit of reading, but if you take the time to do the readings and attend lecture you're guaranteed to get a good mark!
The level of difficulty in the work involved for MU121 is minimal, but if you don't keep up with the required readings (literally all of them) you won't get As on the reading quizzes & assignments. Brent gives really clear grading criteria though. He posts online reminders of deadlines to keep you on track. No papers either, which is a plus!
Solid prof. Lectures are mandatory as you don't receive slides, and are tested on class material. Textbook reading is also mandatory, book is interesting but very long readings (sometimes 70+ dense pages a week). I loved his lectures, but the way he evaluates is highly flawed. Not the easiest A, but a fun class for sure.
Not only are his lectures long and dry, they are essentially pointless if you do the readings. Thankfully attendance isn't mandatory or I would have failed. Having quizzes on the upcoming weeks lecture material is annoying and unfair. If you do the readings you won't need to go to class to pass the course.
AMAZING person who absolutely adores what he teaches, but holy hell is it tough. Readings for quizzes every week, and the quizzes on what you are about to learn, not what you have learned?!?!?!?!
Did not like this class.
This is the most difficult course I have taken. The questions on tests and quizzes are based on small facts that are not easy to pick up from the readings and lessons. You do multiple discussion posts worth 10% of your grade, but he takes 1/2 the marks off if you post less than 2 days before it is due. He did not tell us this until it was too late.
Stupidly hard for an online class. Tests were made up of small, hard to remember facts, that were unimportant, and a lot of badly worded questions that were confusing. Made you fill out discussion responses once a week, at the end of the course he said that he was taking 1/2 marks off for anyone who submitted their responses within 2 days of deadli
The complaints of MU121 carry over (the discussion board thing is in the syllabus tbf). The written assignments are so obtusely worded, the mock exam assignment means don't have over 50%. of grade b4 exam. His quizzes/exams favour either super specific details (specific African terms as a fill in the blank) or check all that apply (2/4 right0).
Great Prof who loves what he teaches. However, you will be screwed out of grades by weekly quizzes each requiring 1-2 hrs of reading, often about material to be learned in class AFTER the quiz is due. Don't forget to memorize every word in the textbook in order to achieve a decent grade. Prepare to have your passion for music sucked out of you.
After missing 4 classes he sent me an email threatening to contact the dean and possibly defer me from writing the final exam if I did not start showing up for class. So, in other words, he views attendance as mandatory. Lots of memorization of specific artists, songs, albums, and where artists are from. Lots of reading that is essential to pass.
Doesnt give constructive comments.
He will make you memorize specific religious terms that have little to do with course content. 100-200 page readings a week with about 2 hours of readings through course notes not including required readings. Not to mention weekly quizzes. Stay away from this prof
The actual course content was really interesting, and I learned a lot. But just one lesson is like three lessons packed into one, plus three chapters of readings. I asked for help and he told me to just do the lessons. Half the exam are random questions that are unimportant. Not a good way to evaluate someone's learning process but he doesn't care
The content of this course is really interesting. However, you are tested on specific insignificant terms. Each week you must take at least 7-8 hours out of your day to go through all readings and course content, this does not include the time you take to study for weekly quizzes, journal responses, and discussion posts (each week). STAY AWAY
The only way you'll do well in any of his classes is through mindless memorization of hundreds of pages worth of reading and lecture notes. He marks alright but that still doesn't negate the ridiculous weekly quizzes with the most stupid questions. Absolutely horrible communication and no sympathy for your problems - even with the pandemic. AVOID.
This class is my most time consuming class this semester, and its an elective. The prof expects you to devote hours and hours to these mandatory readings every single week, plus mandatory videos on top of the readings. If you don't know much about music (song forms, time signatures, etc) do not take this course.
This class is set up is the most stupid way where it becomes so time consuming for an elective. Like I have orgo I DONT HAVE TIME FOR THIS BS. Save your time as don't take this class as an elective.
This professor does not care about your well-being or your time. The amount of work for a class I do not need is ridiculous. Was failed on a large paper due to the fact that "I did not understand", when asked to re-write the paper I was told no because of my lack of time spent on the course work - though all of my outside readings were done.
Everything was fine until the final exam. Changed the format from the regular quizzes to a way harder lockdown browser with a camera and short answer questions. Had you not cheated the course would be borderline impossible stay away from this proof. Also, he provides little to no answers to questions.
Final exam is the worst. Nothing that he put in the outlines was on the exam.
Just don't take this class if you dont have to... extremely rough. I think this prof just uses this class to hear his own voice and show how smart he is rather than teach. The content is very interesting but probably not worth the stress of 40 pages of reading every week, and tests that require you to remember tiny tiny details
Awful excuse for a teacher, gives little to no instruction. Sets high unrealistic expectations without considering that his "teaching" impacts the capabilities of the student's work. Interesting course but terrible teacher, avoid at all cost.
Terrible prof. Insufferable personality, impossible quizzes, and MU121 was an atrocious class every step of the way. Avoid this professor like COVID-19.
Not worth it. He assigns an insane amount of readings every week, and expects you to dedicate your entire life to his course. Extremely difficult grader, has useless writing advice that he doesn't even follow. He does not respond to emails, so don't bother trying to reach him. Find another elective if you can.
Rubrics don't meet the prof's own standards enough. Even if you follow the rubric, the extensive feedback he provides gives you no hope. He requires you to have English skills even 5 peer reviewers could not catch. He does not listen to students and does not sympathize with them. I was caused so much anxiety over this class for nothing.
Most unpredictable professor experienced all university. If you follow feedback and rubric perfectly, it doesn’t mean a good grade. Quizzes don’t knowledge, they test ability to remember specific words people said. Hagerman appears very egotistical, treating the course like a masters level writing or English course, not a religion course.
Very inconsiderate towards his students and thinks this is the only class students have. Material is very interesting but sadly the extreme workload is just not worth it. On top of that the professor has absurd expectations that he himself does not even follow. Will never reply to an email and if he does he will just direct you to the syllabus
Do not waste your time taking this course. The prof has no feelings towards his students and acts like this is the only class they have and should be taking. The lessons were very long, It felt like 3 lessons in 1. I took this class as an elective but felt like I was majoring in it. This prof has no sympathy even after opening up to him.
Content: not hard - its interesting, though prof makes it absolutely insufferable. You must read each module of each unit and then pass (ungraded) quizzes and get higher than 70% to see next units. Readings: unreasonably long. quizzes: test on minuscule details not pertaining to course content. virtually impossible to keep up if in other classes.
Don't take this course. Prof is inconsiderate and makes assignments really hard to complete.
If you take this course as an elective, get ready to spend most of your time on this course rather than your required courses. Overall, this is not an easy course and professor makes extremely hard exams/assignments.
One of the worst courses ever. The Professor barely teaches anything, and just makes you read the textbook. There are lots of tests, and the questions ask you to recall what the textbook said word by word. They ask for little tidbits that have barely any importance. Put a damper in my love for rock music, that's how bad it was.
Manages to be patronizing on top of having Ph.D. level expectations for his students. His tone in the lessons reads like he thinks we are all idiots copying from the internet. We got a 4-page grammar checklist for assignments implying students only know how to write for social media and not for academia. This professor has a superiority complex.
If you haven't taken music all through high school and have a deep knowledge of music history...DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE...in fourth year, with a high GPA, and I couldn't even get past the third week. Ridiculous that there are no prerequisites. Brags in syllabus that 30% of people fail his course.
If you are thinking of taking this course as an elective DONT. He gives the most condescending feedback on all his assignments and has unrealistically ridiculous expectations for students. Following his feedback, rubrics and writing tips are not enough he will always find something wrong with your work.
Does not know what he wants from students. He will ask for one thing in the assignment instructions, and then penalize the student for following what he asks for. He will ignore any emails you send him. He does not care about your learning experience - he just wants to feel like he is superior to you. Refers to his material as "holy scripture."
this course would be a lot more interesting if the answers for the quizes were actual important facts. this guy puts the most random questions which are hard to interpret due to his many spelling errors. makes my love for music deteriorate with the way this course works.
Interesting course but way too heavy workload. This SUBJECTIVE topic should be assessed with papers, not tests with objective answers. Asides from this, the course is ruined by the disrespectful tone that the prof uses with students. Respect is a 2 way street. He is a classic guy who's bitter he didn't make it in the music industry.
Don't take this course with this guy. Claims to be a big music guy who is passionate about it, but singlehandedly crushes everyone's passion for music. Tests you on stupid and irrelevant things, is super rude in emails and posts, and has unreasonably high expectations. Genuinely a rude and bad person.
I dropped his class upon reading his syllabus and his "Reality Check" post. I was genuinely interested in learning about this subject but his initial posts were mentally exhausting. He explains how, "MU121 has a 20% failure rate." and, "If you're struggling, just self-reflect." If this is an elective for you, take another. AVOID.
NEVER TAKE MU121!!! Biggest regret of my life up to date
Online class cannot move forward unless lessons and discussions are completed, online yet exam is in person and assignments are heavy. Not a good course to get a credit - also not lenient with extensions.
Save yourself. Do NOT take this course. I am a music major, have experience in rock history and am pretty good at this and this was TORTURE. He is rude, disrespectful and puts himself on a pedestal. The listening assignments are extremely unfair and not relevant. Leaves students to read only, and hardly teaches anything. Needless to say, I'm mad.
I took this course as a "bird" course because I enjoy music, wow was I ever wrong. I'm in business and I had a passion for rock music so I obviously thought a course like this would reach my interest, but the amount of bogus material and tough grading involved is very irritating. I absolutely should've dropped this class when I had the chance.
Seems like he would be an okay guy outside of a class setting. My main gripes are his unconventional quiz questions, tendency to remove marks for not adding things not specified in the actual guide/rubric, and others that I cannot remember right now.
He is clearly very passionate about the subject matter, and I believe this leads to the information overload that is in this course. Some of the content is drilled into your head with the readings and some of it is mentioned in passing. I never felt sure about what we were going to be tested on. And if you don't have a musical ear, good luck.
Disappointing course. Professor relies solely on the syllabus, offers minimal help, and shows a superiority complex. Grading is inconsistent and harsh, often not aligning with the rubric. Lacks genuine care for student success. Not recommended.
course setup is very tedious and annoying. I took this class as an elective and I am extremely dissapointed. if you dont complete his required benchmarks you will not be able to progress thru the next lesson. If you ask him politely to assist you thru the benchmarks, he will reject you and tell u to read the syllabus. no feedback given. doesnt care
Do not take this class if you are looking for an interesting/simple elective. Quizzes and weekly learning assignments are graded extremely hard. Several students have complained about the difficulty and unfairness of the course to the prof and have even considered going to the dean. Excessive amount of work and prof is unwilling to help students.
I hated this professor. Not only was the class extremely hard to keep up with, but it was poorly organized too. I had a question within my first week of classes and when I emailed him he was quite mean and entirely unhelpful. History of Rock music seems cool, but don't take it you will regret it.
Genuinely the worst professor I have encountered at this school, extremely unhelpful and hard to reach. Don't bother reaching out to him for clarification for an assignment or quiz, as he will literally take weeks to answer. Course content is extremely boring and repetitive, with a ridiculous amount of mandatory quizzes which are not even for grades
I wouldn't usually post on here, but my goodness he was so bad. He was irrational and rude to students, and the course was far too difficult to be a first year elective. Its a shame, I did learn a lot from this course because I enjoy music, but a different prof would drastically improve the course.
Horrible prof
Makes you read too much material and the listening quizzes that are worth 10% each are so ultra specific for the answers they want that it's nearly impossible to get a decent grade. you also have to complete practice quizzes (that are really hard) that are not graded to unlock the next weeks lecture. (i am doing a bachelors in music)
An excerpt from the course road map: "If you have a question about an assignment, a due date, a reading, etc., please use the technique that years of video gaming and internet browsing has surely taught you: search for the answer yourself first." He talks down to you in every instruction. Clearly thinks very little of his students.
I had never felt the need to rate a professor until I took a class with Brent. He took my passion for Rock and made me hate it. It feels as if his ego is more important then your learning and it results in a vary unpleasant learning experience.
boring classes
Easy to follow lectures, very organized and supportive and truly cares about helping students succeed if they are trying. Gives in depth feedback and puts effort into making classes engaging and finding solutions to student issues.
Do not take his class it is his way or the highway. He does not provide helpful feedback and his ego is all he cares about. Easy class but will take away marks for the littlest of infractions.
pretty great professor, he's engaging, funny, and reasonable. Class is quite simple and to help learn to be a student.
Dr. Brent Hagerman is clear, engaging, and supportive. He provided helpful feedback and is always approachable, and makes lessons easy to follow. He encouraged participation and provide great support throughout the course. Highly recommend!
Nice guy, funny, enjoyable class, gives good constructive feedback, but for a 200-level course, the assignments were complex. Hard, picky marker. Overall, interesting course, would take again!
Brent is a great, enthusiastic guy. Although he can be a tough grader, it's only because he wants the best for his students. These ratings are really dramatic, he's not bad at all. Just don't use AI and make sure you critically engage with content. I've become a better writer because of his teachings. Stop being mean, he doesn't deserve it!!
I took this class in 4th year and found it easier with more experience, but for a 2nd year student, it could feel overwhelming as there is attendance, daily readings, and mini write ups for each reading. However, the professor is passionate, funny, and supportive, offering great feedback. Lectures are engaging, especially the one on Taylor Swift!
He cares about his students, he offers his time to do office hours, guided me on how to properly write a compelling paper, and he's got some funny jokes every class. Participation is 20, the rest are papers, for those who hate tests this is you're class. Don't take if you're looking for easy mark, you'll need to know the content and come to class.
Same guy, initially I disliked participation marks, but sitting at the front helped me engage more. The course encouraged participation without pressure, making it easier to contribute. The professor focused on exploring ideas rather than just answering questions, with clear grading expectations that made participation feel fair and the papers
Dr. Hagerman was an amazing professor!! The poorer ratings are definitely a bit harsh - as long as you regularly attend class and participate you will do well. Dr. Hagerman was so engaging and actually tried to get to know us which I appreciated. He also provides a lot of support with writing and assignments, and wants you to succeed.
Not sure why the reviews are so hash, this was my favourite class of second year. The content was actually interesting and the lectures were fun to attend and sit through without getting bored. The assignments are straightforward and its easy to do well if you keep up with the readings and attend class. He's a great prof.
Professor hagerman was by far one of the best profs I've had! He was very easy to talk to and gave off a comforting vibe/ was willing to answer any questions about class you may have. He was a fair grader and always gave proper feedback. He was very inspirational and I hope to get him again in the future
he's a fun prof, likes class discussions. kinda tough marker just make sure you read the instructions clearly.
I am not one of his students, I am a scholar of 20th century popular-music history who observed his course on Rock and Roll this year. Not only is this teacher mean spirited and ego-driven - as many of his students have pointed out - he is also generally wrong about a lot of subjects taught in the course. Objectively and observably wrong. DNT
Brent's a great teacher and a pretty easy marker. If you meet the criteria for the assignments, easy A! Really caring and an engaging teacher in general. 10/10 :)
This class is awful! This class is a first year open class it feels like theres an expectation to know music theory. Then comes the insane testing on trival things brought up once in the reading,if you dont have the exact wording he wants you dont get the mark. The textbook content itself is great the class not so much. This class will make you cry
Notice how TEN of these recent positive reviews were all written on the SAME DAY? It's just him faking reviews. This is the worst professor I have ever had, half my class nearly failed/or completely failed, and the other half dropped the course. Cruel man.
This man has brought down the GPA of some of my smartest friends who are on track to be chemical engineers and ace literally every single class. Baffles me he's still a professor here. Should have been fired years ago after an alarming amount of kids have failed his classes.
This prof is terrible. He makes the class boring and confusing, gives unclear assignment instructions, and acts condescending toward students implying all we know how to do is cheat. He focuses too much on readings instead of lessons, feels like he sets you up to fail.
Professor Hagerman has a well designed course, however, if you are looking for help he doesn't provide you with the kind of help you are looking for; he will just tell you to check the syllabus or the outline. You feel for the most part that you have nobody to reach out to for help on anything in the course. All in all, he's there just for show.
Terrible prof. Doesn't care about his students, thinks all we know how to do is cheat, never answers his emails, contradicts himself ALL THE TIME, extremely passive aggressive, a lot of unnecessary and ungraded assignments that just waste your time. Never regretted taking a class more in my entire life.
Incredibly bad. Never take a class with this professor all he does is claim everyone of cheating and even when you prove you didnt he fails you
Ruined my GPA. I get nothing but A+'s in every single class, but definitely not this one. Tests on irrelevant stuff. Thinks everybody cheats on everything and just hates younger generations, he brags about failing them in his own syllabus. Outrageous he hasn't been fired.
You know when a professor gives you a clear idea on what to memorize for a test? You can forget that with this astronomically terrible professor, since he does not clearly say what to study. You know how some professors will never test on things like exact years? He does that. If you aren't 100% certain of the topics, you'll fail.
Very strict, detail-heavy course. Weekly quizzes focused on hyper specific reading details, not themes, making them hard to pass. Only class where citations were required on short-answer exams. Not citing all sources on a closed book mid term led to me failing. Clear expectations weren't always communicated. Good Luck.
avoid this prof at all costs. The material itself is very easy, but the professor has a clear need to assert authority and seems to enjoy exercising it on first-year students. He's also CONVINCED everyone is cheating.
This class was unnecessarily hard, and he is a very tough grader. If you don't have to take this class, I would recommend finding another option. Be prepared to spend many hours studying, and be aware that the exam material can differ from the study materials provided.
Do not take this class if he is teaching it. Hardest exam and midterm you will ever take. If you are taking as an elective, rethink and drop the course. Thought this was going to be a fun and interesting elective. I was wrong. Online class and has an in person exam. Mind you the exam is brutal, he dosent tell you a thing he will test on. Good luck!
online class but with lots and lots of content. interesting content. however, the prof states "how to study" rather than what specifically to study. we were able to have a cheat sheet for the final which helped a lot. mid term was awful. said would be essay style but then you had to generate a convo between two theorists.
Do not take RE220 online if you think it is a bird course. The midterm was a written paper, which is all marked based on what professor thinks and no way to study for it. Final Exam was ridiculous in terms of content we had to remember. Lots of writing to do so I suggest to not take this course. Hard final exam too compared to all other quizzes
Genuinely the worst prof I've had in my 4 years at wlu. Took this course as I needed 1 more elective credit to graduate & I regret it. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. So rude, disrespectful, not helpful, thinks everyone cheats, so many unnecessary ungraded quizzes, doesn't tell you what to study. Who even approved this course?
