Great teacher - knows his stuff. You have to take a lot of notes, and there are a lot of essays to write. But he gives a study guide. Fun class overall.

Riffle's class was fun, but you need to take a lot of notes to make an A. He's pretty passionate about the subject and goes off on some funny tangents.

Awesome! Totally recommended for people who like history and those that don't. Very strait forward, gives you study guides for what is going to be on the test. As long as you do the work and do well on the tests and essays you shouldn't have any problem getting at least a B

Grade is basically 3 tests + 3 essays. Never touched the book and received an a-. and lol he does somewhat look like mat damon. for the tests, just study the study guide very thoroughly and you're good to go.

Hottie, but more importantly, a REALLY GOOD PROFESSOR. Obviously, enjoys what he is teaching, which makes a BIG difference. Tests r a mix of multiple choice, essay, and short answer. Super EZ with his guidence, gives U all U need in lectures to pass exams. Fun class. I'm taking 2 more with him next semester.

Riffel is awesome. He really loves what he does which makes the whole learning experience a lot better. I find myself bored and texting in most of my classes, but that wasn't the case in his class. I'm planning on taking as many classes with him as possible.

Brent is an amazing teacher with a passion for history that comes through to his students. He always makes himself available to anyone needing help or anyone who just wants to talk. I wish he was teaching the other classes I needed. Oh and he's not bad to look at either which helps.

I took Professor Riffel for History 112 over Winter session and let me just say that I learned a lot from him! He made the class fun and interesting, so much in fact that I got an A. Attendance is vital everyday because there is a lot of note taking but other than that, a very enjoyable class! He's very entertaining and easy on the eyes! Take him!

History 130 was a lot of fun with Dr. Riffel. He's very funny and engaging and his class was always fun. For this class specifically, there were no essays. Our grades were based solely on in-class work and tests/midterm/final. It is a lot of information to cover, so make sure to go to every class and take good notes.

Really cool guy. Really clear about what is important and what isn't. If you cover the French Revolution in your class, make sure you know it, because it will probably be on midterm and final. You'll actually learn something in this class and not be bored. Uses powerpoints during lecture, really helpful when someone is confused.

Took summer. Riffel makes the class fun, no doubt, but on some of his tests you'll find questions on things you briefly covered and may not know much about. Also, on the short answer questions, even though it says to "briefly" analyze the topics, you'll have to cover the whole page with your writing.

I've actually taken a few of his history classes because he is an awesome teacher. Text book isn't required just show up to class and take good notes. I wouldn't say he is easy but if you do all your work and get decent grades then you should come out with a B, at least. The only thing is you do have to go to class and take notes and study for the quizzes but he gives you full study guides for each quiz. i defiantly recommend taking him!

SUMMER SESH. Hated history before him. He is really passionate about what he teaches. Keeps discussions light, understands how college kids think. Tells you exactly what will be on the test/quiz. Uses powerpoints. In class assignments are easy points. Pretty dorky, but in a great way. HIGHLY recommended.

Riffel was my first college history teacher. He's brilliant! He loves history, he relates history to pop culture pretty well. If you want an easy teacher and aren't afraid to do some work, he's the BEST history teacher I've taken at COC thus far.

Professor Riffel is one of the best teachers that I've had at COC. He is very funny, kind and knowledgeable about history. Show up to his classes and you will most likely do well on the tests. Textbook not needed that much. Tests consist of multiple choice and 4 short answer responses. He is extremely helpful and wants you to succeed.

Prof. Riffel is a cool guy and like to use humor to interest students in history. I only remember 3 tests total, and a 5 page written paper. Each exam has short essay questions, and a long essay question (which he gives you ahead of time). It's best to prepare ahead of time to have an idea of what you want to say. Overall a great easy-going teacher

Prepare to take good notes in Professor Riffel's class, they are the only sources that you will have to study from for quizzes and exams. There is an online book source but I never used it. Absence leaves you without vital information. Rifle's lectures may last all period, but his own excitementhilarity over subjects allow for no dull moments.

He's by far the most involved online teacher I've ever had. You can tell that he really wants you to do well in the class. He gives a moderate amount of work for a five week course. The way the assignments are set up forces you to really read the material.

Mr RIffel was definitely one of my favorite professors I have ever had at COC. He gives amazing lectures and you really do learn a lot from his class, I looked forward in going to class. Sometimes he is a tough grader, but if you do your work you will get an A. And no he did not pay me to say all this nice stuff about him.

I took his online course, he is VERY involved and will answer questions same day. He makes everything extremely clear. He wants his students to succeed. He allowed us to email the 2 essays to him & gave feedback before we submitted. I would take him for every class if possible! Grades quickly and gives feedback. Prepares you for quizzes & tests!

What a great class. Took it online over summer and Prof. Riffel was very available and helpful. The textbook is online and free. There were two online discussion assignments a week. Quizzes (2) were easy and prompts are given beforehand. Essays (2) were fairly straightforward. Final was just like a longer quiz, same difficulty.

I've taken 3 of Riffel's classes, Hist111, Hist112 and Hist212 (History of the Middle East). He's by far the best history professor I've ever had and would take his classes again and again. I'm honestly surprised this man doesn't have a 5 star rating because he's honestly the best. You do have to work, show up and pay attention.

I just finished the winter 5 week course. I have taken a lot of online classes and Mr. Riffel is by far the best online instructor. He will review your essays before you turn them in. He wants to see his students succeed. It was a fast paced class but he made it worth it. No need to spend $ on text he provided an online text.

I took Professor Riffel for a history online course, and it was interesting. Expect to read your textbook online and take good notes because it will be on the test online. You will also watch movies online as well be sure to take notes from that too. Prof. Riffel really cares about his students and wants them all to succeed.

I took this course online, which aren't my favorite because it is harder to learn material, but the assignments given by Professor Riffel were very good at teaching information. Tests were tough but manageable, and the weekly assignments are time consuming but make up the majority of the final grade. I would definitely recommend taking him!

Took his online class and it was a great experience for me. This was my first time taking online summer class and I actually enjoyed his class even though history is not my favorite. Homeworks are good and quizzes are easy as long as you study the guide that he give the class before the test. Will definitely take another online class from him.

I took Prof Riffel for History 112. I really enjoyed going to class every week. His lectures are interesting and engaging. His grading is more than fair, but you need to go to class every time, because everything is lecture based. The exams are easy, and he sends out study guides weeks before the exams. I wish I had more history classes with him.

Prof. Riffel is passionate and funny in history 112. You write. He lectures. But he gets you engaged in the topic. He gives the study guides for exams ahead of time. 30-35 Questions, 1-2 short answers, 1 mini essay. Project consists of 5 page paper or 1 hour interview. I strongly recommend his class. The seats fill up fast. You will not regret it.

I took his class and here's what you have to do to succeed. dont worry about the textbook, take good notes and review them a lot, and then go over everything from the study guides he sends you. If you study what he tells you to this class is easy.

His lectures are amazing, and he throws in funny stories that help you remember key points. 4 tests (midterm+final cumulative) that have mc, short answer, and an essay question on mt+final. No hw, just easy inclass work. One essay 5-7 pgs which was a breeze, just put in lots of primary sources.

Took him over the summer for the 5 week class. Discussion boards cover a lot of material. He's a fair grader, and gives good feedback. Some of his instructions were a bit vague, but he replies almost instantly if you shoot him an email. Wants to work with you outside of the class. Gets very picky about trivial details. Definitely a great teacher.

I took this online class over summer, and it was pretty easy. He's a lenient grader, and as long as you do the work well, you will have no problem in the class. He also offers extra credit at the end.

I would definitely recommend taking this online course. Professor Riffel was very quick at responding when I had questions about the assignments. There was a moderate amount of work and the quizzes and tests were a little challenging, but you had plenty of time to complete them. It was not difficult for me to receive a good grade as well.

Riffel is a good professor. He's funny and makes the content simple for his students to understand. Everything is based off his lecture, which can be annoying when small details are put on the test, but he also does short answer questions that bring test grades up. Lecture is mostly auditory, and there was no book for this class.

Loved Riffel's class. Wish I'd taken both 111 and 112 with him. Super funny but you learn so much. Not strict on attendance but you'll want to show up so you don't miss anything. He's really quick to respond to emails and was super helpful with my term paper. No homework, no textbook, just take notes and you'll be fine!

Riffel is honestly a great professor. He gives great lectures that are both entertaining and discuss what actually matters. In terms of difficulty, I'd say that his class is pretty easy so long as you pay attention and take notes. There isn't a huge amount of unneeded assignments , and only one essay. If you are taking History, take his class.

REALLY good teacher. The coursework is fair in amount and difficulty, and he prepares you for it well. He's funny, but very clear about what will and won't be on tests and explains concepts thoroughly. You'll occasionally see an unreasonably hard test question, but that isn't nearly enough to wipe out all the good taking his class will do you

I took his HIST111 online class. A week consisted of two discussion boards, and either an essay/quiz. I liked the feedback he gave on assignments, and he was very kind, even if he saw that I didn't know what I was talking about in one instance, haha. Provided the online textbook for free. As long as you do all discussion boards you will be fine.

Absolute favorite professor I've had so far. Class is very straightforward, come every day to lecture and take notes, and do classwork. There were 4 tests total, then a 5-7 page final essay at the end. No homework at all. Extra credit too. Extremely easy to get an A if you show up and take notes. He's a hilarious, very laid back and a nice guy.

I'm not a history fan, but I actually enjoyed this class. Riffel really makes it so much more interesting than any of my past history classes. I learned so much brand new information that was never discussed in high school or middle school American history. His enthusiasm and passion for the subject really makes all of the difference.

If you are not a fan of history classes or find them boring, TAKE RIFFEL. He truly makes the class interesting, and fun to attend.

I took Prof Riffel online for winter and it wasn't hard! As long as you do all the work&extra credit, you will be fine. Each week consisted of 2 discussions & either a quiz or essay. It's very important to read because all of his discussions, exams,& essays are based on the book. Responds to emails super fast too. Made history interesting & easy.

I grew up hating history, but I would 100% take another history class with him. He is so funny and annoying and obnoxious. Perfect wake me up and made me excited to come to class. I retained more information from his great way of storytelling than I ever have before in the history field. Miss him dearly already!

his class was clear along with his expectations. i took his class online winter 2017 and i would definitely take again, he was available to answer any questions i had, i had a head injury and he was kind enough to give me an extension and get most of what I need done in a timely manner. easy A or B. He also had youtube videos to go along.

Dr. Riffel is awesome, even though attendance is not mandatory it seems that if you did not go to class you would miss a lot of important stuff such as in class activities that are graded and the exact things that you are expected to know for the exams. He really wants to see his students succeed and goes out of his way to do so if you reach out.

Riffel is a great professor! He's very funny, goes through his lectures thoroughly, and loves to answer questions. He is a tough grader but studying the PowerPoint notes before the test & the essays will help you. If you don't understand the criteria, ask him because it might be on the test. He does give extra credit but you rarely have homework.

This online class was tedious especially discussion posts (have to read) but he grades easy. For the exams he gives the essay questions beforehand so just copy & paste. His test are kinda straightforward just have an idea on the chapters so skim through the book (answers can be found in book not on quizlet but can be googled). The essay is easy.

The class wasn't difficult and didn't feel boring like how some history professors are. He also assigns a lot of chapters to read but if you skim through the readings and get the general ideas you'll be fine. 10/10 would recommend his online class.

There is no homework for class, but you do need to show up. His lectures are hilarious, and comfortable enough to share in class too. I would take more of his classes.

Weekly homework is a discussion board that must be 250 words with 50 separate word long replies to classmates. If you're taking a winter/summer course expect your workload to be squeezed to fit into a month's time. Quizzes and tests are all open notes but make sure to not plagiarize anything for the essays. Easy if you pay attention to deadlines.

I took History 1 and 2 with Mr. Riffel and he is such an amazing professor. His lectures are fun & informational and the final essay's & tests were a breeze as he allows you to take it open note. The usual and typical history class. Dr. Riffel is a nice and caring professor, he will respond to emails quick and he also doesn't hesitate to help you out. He also sends out constant reminders on when thing are due. His exams, however, are a bit on the harder side, just make sure you do your reading and you'll be ok. Take him if you can.

Brent gives out 4 major quizzes for the class. I took his online course and its one of the best experiences that I took. He has experience with being online, every week he gives out an assignment of a chapter and its due every Friday at 11:59 PM. You have a whole week to do it. Also, the quizzes are open notes and you can use the internet to help.

Riffel was a great prof!!super cool guy and no zooms for his class. You had a discussion due every friday but he'd open it the saturday before. I believe we only had two quizzes and a midterm and final but if you do the discussion you'll be fine. There was a 5 page paper due on the last week but he gives you the info through the discussion.

Professor Riffel is very knowledgeable in all things history. He uploads great little lectures on the specific topics we are going to be reading about. There are discussion posts every week that have to pass a certain word count, but he gives you so much important information, it's easy to write more. He's very involved and leaves nice comments.

Great professor. Completely online and asynchronous during Covid. One discussion due per week, I've gotten a 100% on each assignment, and I hate history. I don't study for his quizzes and use the book as I go along and I passed just fine (1 discussion each week, 2 quizzes, 2 exams, 1 essay)

One discussion(250words) per week and reply to 5 people (50 words). Give study guide and the essay prompt that will be in test. Really nice and easy class. He gives you the pdf of the textbook.

You get a 10 point extra credit opportunity that boosts your grade. You have to write a double-spaced 5-6 page essay (can start early, not hard, chose from mult. prompts). Easy grader. I took Hist 111 over the summer. Professor Riffel is very caring. The class is well organized. The textbook was an online textbook and free. He provides several recorded lectures to go along with the readings, which you should definitely watch. Be prepared for weekly discussion posts, quizzes and 2 final essays (at least for the 5-week course).

I took him for histoy 111 and took him again for 112. The work was only 1 discussion post a week. There were only 2 quizzes and the midterm and final. There is also a final essay which is not difficult. The class overall was easy would take again.

The work is not easy, but this professor is really good. I took the online accelerated summer course. He responds to emails quickly, extremely helpful, and knows what he is talking about. Lots of reading and pretty much no extra credit but I still got an A. Take this professor but don't load yourself up on classes and have his as one of them.

Coming from someone who doesn't like history, this class was easy. One discussion per week that was due every Friday. The weeks we had quizzes or exams, he wouldn't give us anything to do for the week. Always encourages students to ask him questions. He really wants his students to succeed. Textbook online. Very caring, passionate, and helpful. The lectures are engaging and very informative. The book used is free online but reading it is not necessary if you understand the lectures. The workload is enough to help to understand of class but not at all overwhelming. Easily one of the best teachers I have had at COC.

Took accelerated winter class and although there was a lot of reading, as long as you understand the main concepts, you will be okay. 2 essays in total and 2 discussion posts per week on the course material and/or external sources. The quizzes were relatively easy as long as you studied the terms/prompts he gives you ahead of time.

This is an amazing and rare professor. I have had previous history teachers jam their opinions down my throat. He does not, he tells history how it was and leaves opinions up to you. He does not tell you how to feel about history either. It is clear what to pay attention to. The lectures are great and entertaining, he tells history well.

Professor Riffel had a great class. He was very passionate about what he taught and encouraged students to participate. The tests were somewhat difficult, so take lots of notes and try to study. His class was very interesting in parts, although some topics weren't able to grab my interest which was ok. I would take him again if I had the chance.

I recommend taking him!! He's quick with grading and giving back feedback and is very accessible outside of class. He has a clear grading system and the amount of work is not too much, it's the perfect amount. For his tests, they can be pretty challenging but he gives a study guide so if you follow that, then you should be fine.

Easy class you're guaranteed to pass as long as you stay on everything and turn it in on time. Gives good feedback on every assignment, as well as extra credit at the end of the class if you want to boost your grade. Exams and quizzes usually have study guides to use which will come in handy.

I took his short five week class on US history 1 and it was simple, to the point, and no hassle. There was reading to be done but what needed to be read was easy to find and understand and write about. My only gripe was the replying to classmates in discussions but that's about it. I would take him again and again, he is by far the best hist prof.

Definitely going to take this professor for HIST112. There's only one discussion per week. Occasionally there is a quiz or exam.There's one 5 page essay. It's a simple class. However, you really have to read the material to be successful on the quizzes and exams. He is a great responder too! But tough on grading. Be specific with your writing!

Wonderful professor, always there and ready to help even online, you can tell he cares about his work and students. He leaves feedback on all assignments and is very clear on what is expected. Easy class, but also super educational. Just do the assignments and you'll pass!

By far the best Professor I have had. Professor Riffel makes his lectures so interesting, you can tell he cares a lot about the subject and his students. To pass his class we did class work and a 5-7 page essay, but you must put in studying time for his exams/essay questions! Overall his class was enjoyable and gave me more interest on the subject!

This was my first college class that I took (summer class for credit) and it was pretty good! He graded mostly on discussions which were easy. Riffel is flexible with due dates and will give you more time on an assignment if you have a reason. He provides you with all the materials you would need. Solid class. I learned a lot :).

I took Professor Riffel's summer His-111 course & he was amazing! His class was very straightforward & he prepared us well. Two discussions (250 words per discussion post minimum) a week with 6 replies (50 words per reply minimum). His tests were open note & require short essay. He provides the textbook for free and is constantly sending reminders.

Professor Riffel's class was straightforward and engaging. Assignments were manageable, with weekly discussions and replies. Tests were open-note, and the free textbook was helpful. Unstuckstudy AI was a great study tool alongside the class materials.

Very lenient grader and actually made the class engaging. It was also an online course but he's easily accessible outside class and he always wants to hear from you. He also reminds you when things are due in his constant announcements and his study guides are very helpful for tests, which are non-proctored and open notes. TAKE HIM!!!

This professor was amazing. His lectures were concise and super engaging, he is easily approachable for any questions or concerns. Loved him, 100% take this professor, he's the best.

If you ever take a history course, get this professor. Took his in-person class and it was very easy. His lectures are very engaging and make you feel like coming to his class every single time. He lets you know what is on the quizzes, midterm, and final. One essay was his final project and he offered one extra credit opportunity. Take him!

Professor Riffle, is great with his in class lectures. He really cares for his students and wants them to succeed. He is thorough in his teachings and prepares you for what is on the upcoming tests. There is daily class work you turn in to show your attendance in class. He makes it very easy to learn in his class. You will take your own notes.

He's a Great Professor overall and wants every student to succeed. He always goes over what will be on the quiz/test in a class beforehand, but if you want to get an A, you have to study outside of class a little bit. He has in-class work that will be turned in for a grade at the end of the year, it's free points but you have to show up.

This prof makes history class super fun and not boring like other classes lol. He's really chill and wants everyone to do good, plus he answer emails FAST

Take his class! Omg the lectures are like stories, so your not even realizing your learning. He is super nice and actually cares if your struggling, which is rare tbh.

Great class! I didn't even like history before this class but he made it so fun and real. You can tell he loves teaching and actually want us to succeed. Classwork is easy points and there is an essay assignment at the end that he gives a lot of help with. Exams are not easy but there are study guides to help. Probably my favorite teacher at COC.

Professor Riffel is probably one of the best on campus. I had to take this class as a requirement but his lectures are very entertaining and I would definitely take another his history course in the future. He's very caring of all of his students. Always thoroughly explains exams. If you have to take history I would always choose Professor Riffel.

Brilliant guy, probably the best teacher I've ever had

Professor Riffel makes history both fun and engaging with his unique teaching style. His class is really easy if you stay involved and take good notes. The essay is the only "long" assignment, but he gives you PLENTY of time to finish it and is very helpful throughout the whole process. He should be your first choice for this course.

I took Riffel and he was a pretty fast/fair grader with a solid structure. His class is easy if you read all of the chapters and study well for exams. There is a lot of reading involved and heavy writing prompts. His class is very work heavy so I suggest taking it alone if you are taking it over the winter/summer like I did.

This is one of, if not the best professor I have ever had. Super easy class and he makes everything really easy on Canvas. Gives good feedback on the essays and overall a great professor. If you need to take History, take Professor Riffel!

Super understanding, fast grader, very active in the course and will always be willing to help you out by reading your essays before you submit. 10/10 THE BEST

His lectures are super interesting and makes the time pass super fast. The first test was complicated but after that you get used to it. Do not just study the study guide, study everything you have. Write down anything he says and you will do great!! He is very understanding and a really nice guy.

Professor Riffel is incredible, he gives clear expectations for his class that honestly are very easy to meet, he wants to satiate the students curiosity about historical events even if it is not going to show up on a test, he gives clear feedback but he mostly cares that you put your best effort TAKE HIS CLASS

Be to every lecture on time and ready to learn, and you should be able to pass easily. Very funny and respectful, genuinely wants you to succeed. Highly, highly recommend.

Great prof! He would always send out reminders of what is expected. Discussion posts every Friday. Exams and quizzes were relatively easy. You can use the textbook notes, and even the internet is allowed. Very kind and considerate professor, but there is no late work. I definitely recommend and will be taking him again.

He's super funny and caring. I learned a lot, this has been one of my favorite classes and professors. The workload was extremely reasonable, 2 exams, 2 quizzes, 1 essay. He liked answering questions, and his tangents were as interesting as the lectures. Throughout the course he'd let you know if something's going to be on a test, which is helpful.
