This was a fun class!
Brother Schmidt is goofy in a good way. His class can get boring and redundant, but it is easy and can get interesting. He gives you fake money for participation which you turn back into him for participation points. He teaches you what you need to know for the test and you get a pretty fair grade. Going to concerts and plays is most of your grade
Brother Schmidt has honestly been one of my favorite professors in my college career. He is very smart but not in a in your face way. I loved learning from him. I couldn't believe I was taking a Beauty and Creativity class when I signed. I came away with a love for the humanities and a greater appreciation for art. That's a good professor.
He is one of my favorite teachers since Ive been here. He gives great insights in his Book of Mormon class and teached you greek and latin meanings to certain words which makes the class and learning interesting. Take him! Class is pretty easy ;)
His class is easy, but it gets very dry and boring. The chapter outlines are simple yet redundant. It's a fine class to take, but there are more interesting teachers that are more engaging. Scripture and manual readings are a large part of your grade.
Good teacher and has good insights. Spent time working for the Catholic Church and is well-versed in Greek and Latin. The class can get dry and boring though. Sort of monotone and likes to talk a lot. Assignments are mainly outlines of a certain chapter in your reading block; several 700 word reflection papers; 2,000 word midterm and final papers
Brother Schmidt is a fine professor. His class is easy and he is really helpful. However, he only really gives a superficial treatment of the Book of Mormon so if you are looking for more insightful classes take somebody else.
He tended to be very repetitive, he also had us sit in assigned seats which was very irritating. I personally did not enjoy him as a Book of Mormon teacher.
Don't take him. DON'T. there are so many better Book of Mormon teachers!! This man is repetitive, selfish, and petty (harsh words, but very true). He tells personal, unrelated stories all class, marks you down for silly things, is very controlling, disorganized, rude. BoM is a great class when a different teacher teaches it!! Look for SOMEONE ELSE.
Very sweet guy and spiritual but his class was not for me. I wish that we had gone into more depth in the Book of Mormon, but instead we kind of skimmed over everything. His class was kind of boring and I can tell that he isn't completely comfortable teaching religion yet. I would suggest taking a different professor.
If I could recommend any professor to you- it would be Bro. Schmidt. He is realllllly weird, but hysterical. His class is simple. Just show up- a few online quizzes that are right out of the text book. Test questions come directly from his jeopardy questions the day before the test so make sure that's what you study. An easy A, just show up.
Brother Schmidt is the Bomb!!! His class is awesome!!! All the class is quizzes straight out from the text super easy, and his tests are answers from the Jeopardy games the day before. I looked forward to going to his class everyday!! Take his class!!!!
Brother Schmidt is a pretty goofy guy. His class is super easy to get an A in if you go and do all the reading, but you don't really learn much from the lectures. They aren't clear and he repeats the same things that don't matter. If you want to learn from lecture, don't take him--if you can learn by yourself, he's easy for a good grade.
He give a great insight into the New Testament that I feel you won't get from any other teacher. He is understanding and is very humble. I loved his class and would love to take another class from him. The expectations were clear and there were no surprises. He also makes some pretty good jokes.
Bro Schmidt's class was so easy! If you are looking to get an A take his class. His assignments are really easy and he gives you 2 free homeworkpaper passes. He is pretty strict about attendance, but he allows you to also use the pass for missing class. As long as you occasionally volunteer to read, or answer questions, you will get an A.
Worst teacher I've ever encountered. If you get sick, or have a family crisis during the semester, don't waste your breathe trying to pass this class. He is the most self-righteous, high and mighty, disrespectful, controlling, uncaring teacher on this campus. He will NOT work with you for ANY circumstance. Treats you like a high schooler.
Great teacher, but a little socially weird. Really helps you understand the arts in a fun way. You will get an A as long as you participate (answer questions in class) everyday and do the homework. Good amount of reading, but it's easy. All his exams are based on 90% of his study guides, study them before exams and you will do fine. I learned a lot
I thought Bro. Schmidt would be tough, but he's a pretty chill guy. Interesting class. He gives good feed back as well.
At first he seems exceptionally conservative, but as he gets comfortable with the students, he becomes this super awesome professor. He demands class participation, and that is actually essential for this class's learning. He knows what he is teaching.
I wasn't in the class long, but it was enough. He is petty and his policy is technology can only be used in the first two rows & for everyone else to keep an eye on them and report if they're not looking at scriptures--and they'll be rewarded! I didn't know we were in Nazi Germany...I couldn't feel the Spirit at all so I switched--best choice ever.
This class was okay at best. Brother Schmidt does not know how to have or direct any meaningful discussions. I felt like it was a repeat of freshman year of seminary. I wish we got deeper into topics and he didn't ask such surface level questions. Everything seemed kind of forced and it wasn't a fun class and I didn't learn much. He is super nice.
Brother Schmidt is a goofy guy. His organization was a bit scattered and sometimes confusing but you get the hang of it. If you are shy and don't like to talk don't take this class! Participation (answering questionsspeaking up in class) was a huge part of the grade. Attendance was also heavily graded.
Brother Schmidt is awesome. If you can take humanities from him I would definitely recommend it. He keeps class interesting and he has plenty of weird stories to share. If you try at all for an A you'll get one. Brother Schmidt is super understanding and helpful.
Brother Schmidt is the best religion teacher EVER. Super easy grader, Just be sure you put the effort forth and actually DO your assignments. I felt the spirit as he gave lectures. definitely recommend.
Bro. Schmidt's class has made me think about changing my degree. I have loved learning about the arts, music, and photography! he makes class super fun and his tests are SO EASY because he has an amazing strategy for test review. It includes jeopardy and basketball. Seriously this guy is crazy and hilarious. I would suggest sitting in the front.
I wasn't the biggest fan of Bro Schmidt. I was bored most of the time and it was a lot of work for a religion class. I'm a 4.0 student and this was my lowest grade. Schmidt does give a "hope card" which you can turn in for a free pass. I missed one day and it dropped my grade almost 10 points. Definitely wouldn't take from him again
This class requires your own effort but it's for your own good. Readings and paying attention in class are very important. Test reviews will save your life. His tests are easy though and half of it is taken in a group. He also gives out 2 hope cards that will replace your score on anything. Easy A, but you have to be willing to put in the effort.
Bro. Schmidt as a humanities teacher is great. Basically show up, participate, and keep track of homework (generally pretty easy, just be aware of the big things) and you'll do fine. His demeanor in class is marvelous.
This teacher is pretty dang awesome. The only thing that was holding him back was the subject which was Humanities Intro. I wish he could elaborate on it more. But he made me laugh and if you just come to class you should get an A
Bro. Schmidt was a funny guy. He loved giving out extra credit using Yoda bucks, which was odd yet entertaining. He told interesting stories, and I really liked the class. It was very little work outside of the classroom. There were just a few short readings. The tests were super easy. You just have to be able to recognize specific art and music.
If your taking Humanities from Bro. Schmidt for Humanities, or any other classes that's not religion, He's great. I would never, ever, recommend anyone to take his religion courses. His amount of homework for (A Religion class) is absolutely ridiculous. His way of grading is completely unjustified. I'll never take him again for religion. Beware!
So funny! Great sense of humor and makes the arts interesting. Overall, he'll give you a class worth what you're paying for to take it and make it fun all in the same. Participation matters but so long as you show up you're guaranteed to pass pretty easily. He's also really good at giving solid study guides and makes it fun in class with jeopardy.
He is passionate about the topics he teaches about, but he doesn't describe clearly the material on the midterm. He has you read a few difficult things, but the overall class is great. He is a bit quirky, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Brother Schmidt is a really nice guy, but he isn't the best at lecturing. He is a little unorganized, but he wants everyone to pass. He gives some extra credit, and the class is really pretty easy if you show up to class and do the assignments. The tests are really easy.
He is very understanding of his students and strives to help them achieve their goals. He is lenient and understand that you only need to learn the basics since it's a foundation class. He also really knows his stuff. I would definitely take him again.
If you do the work, participate, and read, you will get a good grade. His lectures are fun and change every day.
He's very intelligent and loves the students, but holy cow is he dry. He wants his students to succeed, so he'll help you. He doesn't accept late work, though, unless you have a Hope Card. I'm glad that class is done. Good guy to get to know, but not a good teacher. It was so hard to find motivation to go. I only went because he took attendance.
One of the best teachers I've had! He really cares about his students and wants them to get an A. TONS of extra credit that can pull you up a full grade. He is hilarious in lectures and tells the best stories. He prepares you well for each exam, practically giving the answers.
Brother Schmidt is as caring as a professor can get. I probably will never appreciate art, music, etc. but even though this topic isn't my favorite, I still enjoyed class. If you are an introvert don't take this class. This class is as fun as you make it. If you hate Humanities take it from Bro Schmidt he makes it fun.
It took some time for me to warm up to Bro. Schmidt, but once I did I really started enjoying class. He can get a bit distracted and go off topic, but he's really interesting and knowledgeable. Easy grader. You can tell he cares about students. Play piano in his class!!!
Brother Schmidt is a very caring teacher and wants his students to succeed! The class is laid out well, and the assignments requirements are clear. He knows a lot about ancient languages, and often refers back to those when teaching the content. He really encourages class participation and is all around great.
Brother Schmidt is such a great teacher!! He gives out TONS of extra points in class, so many that many of us did not even have to show up for the final or write the final paper. He is very knowledgeable and his lectures are interesting. The work is minimal, just prep assignments and a few papers every few months. I would definitely recommend him.
Take Brother Schmidt if you want to edify your mind. I think he was the kind of guy who always cared more about learning than he did about grades. So what if his tests are really hard, he gets you excited about Greek and History so much that you will be stoked to take the test.
Brother Schmidt is super smart and really kind. However he is a mess when it comes to iLearn and I can't even start to rant on the syllabus. Anyways, he wants you to learn and become the best you can be. He also has fun classes.
If Will Ferrell and Max Prado had a kid it would be Brother Schmidt. Love this guy. He goes into awesome details about Greek and makes dope connections that you wouldn't think about with the gospel. He's written books and works with BYU on document translations. You do easy outlines every class and get "hope cards" to make up HW and absences.
I love Bro. Schmidt! He is hilarious and an overall goofy guy. I would highly recommend taking his world religions class, I learned a lot of things through his entertaining classes. He cares more about learning then grades, so it is not too hard to get an A in this class. He is also very smart and knowledgeable but not intimidating.
To start, he is a good guy but is not a good teacher. He doesn't seem to have a clear direction most of the time and you don't learn near as much as you could. His syllabus and ability to use i-learn are sad. In my case, he messed up the grading and refused to change it because he felt he gave me too high a grade on an unrelated assignment.
Bro. Schmidt is one of my least favorite profs I've had. He is not accommodating at all & I do not like the way he runs class or approaches content (coming from an Ed major). Favoritism is very apparent in the classroom. He is a mildly funny guy (dorky personality) and is quite intelligent, but he does not seem to care much about the individual.
Brother Schmidt was awesome! He is such a nice teacher- he really cares about his students. He gives out hope cards all the time, and the outlines due for each class only take about 30 minutes. I would take him again if I could!
Brother Schmidt is an awesome teacher. He knows so much about the gospel and has great insights about everything. He makes class entertaining and fun. There is a little bit of homework due before each class but very manageable. Highly recommend!
Classes are hard to pay attention. Gives out hope cards throughout the semester that can be used for anything, attendance, the final or homework. The finals were really hard for me due to the randomness of questions so I used a hope card every time and got a 100%. 2 homework assignments that have the exact same layout as well as required reading.
Brother Schmidt can be scatterbrained at times, but his tangents are part of his charm. He has real expectations of you--do your work, and do it well. If you think you deserve an A just because you can breathe, you won't do well. Brother Schmidt is VERY willing to work with you, but you have to be human about it--no lame excuses. tl;dr Great prof.
Brother Schmidt is super knowledgeable about Attic and Roman cultures and languages, and it is worth taking any class he has. His classes are comparatively difficult (but BYU-I classes are pretty easy), but that's because he is excited about the subject matter and wants to see students succeed. If you value work, you'll love his classes!
Brother Schmidt is very friendly and a great professor! Despite what a few other reviewers have said, he clearly doesn't pick favorites--he is simply not willing to work with students that don't do their part. If you are diligent, you'll easily pass. That said, his workloads can be heavy--but this was Greek, so that's to be expected.
I was very excited to take Jesus Christ and the E.G., it was supposed to be one of the best. The classroom ended up rather being a spotlight of his accomplishments and qualifications. He tends to interrupt comments before finished, stop discussions in mid-flow, and dismiss genuine questions. Very superficial. I didn't learn hardly anything, sadly.
Brother Schmidt is very enthusiastic about Greek but he is not a very good teacher. Most class time was spent with him rambling or going over the homework, but not much teaching. Greek is fascinating but it was very discouraging to have to teach myself most everything and still have to go to class even though it was kinda pointless.
Breaks my heart to say this since he's such a sweet guy but the class was a waste of something special. He got off subject consistently and taught Greek history and linguistics more than world religions. An opportunity to learn about the religions of the world should be taken very seriously.
Professor Schmidt is one of the most kind people I have ever met. He has an amazing testimony and truly loves the gospel. He has such a sweet spirit and you can feel that in the classroom and outside of the classroom. I would definitely take a class from him again.
Honestly, at first, I thought he was pretty full of himself, bragging about his accomplishments and all that. But time revealed that he was actually a very kind and sweet man who really cares about your learning and your success in the class. He also REALLY knows his stuff. Would definitely recommend him for Christian History!
I took his Jesus Christ and Everlasting Gospel class. He has a very hard time presenting information. He almost ignores students with questions and very easily gets onto rants, either about linguistics or his own qualification. Luckily this class' curriculum isn't intense at all.
I took Jesus Christ and the Everlasting Gospel from him; he has good intentions but says his opinion as doctrine. It's hard to get comments in because he talks so much. His lectures are not very spiritual and he focuses on the historical part of the gospel. I didn't feel the spirit often and he tends to brag every class period.
Only felt the spirit once in his JCEG class. I felt like he thought he was teaching primary. Super knowledgeable (has written books) but doesnt share anything, just reads chapters of scripture and then says "isn't the gospel wonderful?" Assigns unnecessary amounts of reading (like 14 chapters). Kahoot games were fun I guess. Shared some cool Greek.
Brother Schmidt really knows his stuff and he has a lot out experience, but he's not the best at teaching what he knows. The majority of assignments are just read about this religion and then write a few sentences about what you learned, they're super easy, but kind of boring and time-consuming. There is an easy attendance quiz after every class.
Gives a lot of papers and readings to do, but as long as you stay on top of them you'll be fine. Make sure you're paying attention for hope cards, and he usually does class reviews before exams. Exams are really easy if you've been paying attention, but you can skate by and still get a decent grade.
My testimony was strengthened greatly after I took Brother Schmits class and I loved all of the discussions we had. Personally I found that I got more out of the classes when I did them in person. So while online is available for use I highly recommend going to the class in person.
I took New Testament from Brother Schmidt. One of the main weekly assignments was an insight report -a 200 word write-up of the weeks most powerful insight. I received a ZERO on a couple even though I met the explicit requirements because he said my insights were just "random religious thoughts" and would not accept a resubmission.
Worst teacher I've ever had. I cried often because I would spend hours on assignments and he would give me horrible scores. He doesn't care about you at all. I never once felt the Spirit because he always tore my assignments down. I can get an A in upper level science classes but I can't in his stupid religion class even though I tried so hard :(
I took Greek 101 and Greek 102 from Brother Smith. He is a very nice professor and knows that Greek can be hard, so he always tries to help in class. He is a very generous grader. You will get an easy A for just attending class and submitting homework. All the homework to submit is reviewed in class before submission, so go to class.
You can tell Brother Schmidt loves teaching. He tries his best to make the class interesting and entertaining. You have to do an outline every class, but it isn't so bad
I took Humanities from him before my mission, then after my mission I took his religion class AND HE REMEMBERED ME. The guy cares about his students. He expects effort, but he's a smart guy and answers questions. He's also super nerdy funny, ask him about his band.
One of my favorite professors I have ever had. I wish to take him much more!
Honestly, just don't. He has expressed racist, ethno/egocentric thoughts and ideas, anti-feminist sentiments, and he has actively degraded other cultures. Repeatedly. On top of that he is emotionally manipulative in class. You have at least 5 pages of reading 2x/week. You have 2 book reports 1,500 words. He tests on random facts from the reading.
He is a very kind man and he knows his stuff. I took REL351 from him and had a blast learning about the different religions in the world and how we are all basically trying to do the same thing: come closer to God. He's a great teacher, is very smart and does a good job.
One of my favorite professors ever, really nice guy who knows a lot about the gospel
So basically do NOT take Religion from him ever no matter what you do. Hes a nice guy but oh my goodness his classes are boring and he completely ignores any questions that students ask and isnt clear about many parts of his lectures. He repeats the same things over and over again and I had the most homework in his class out of all of my others.
Bro. Schmidt is a nice guy, but he doesn't really know how to really TEACH a subject. He didn't even make any of the lessons or HW assignments for our class, so when we asked him about assignments, he had no idea what they were or what was required to get a good grade. He also goes on long, inapplicable tangents.
He used another teacher's canvas course so he didnt know which assignments were due or what the criteria was. During class he will blatently ignore raised hands. The portfolio papers are worth 50%, but we wouldnt recieve instructions on subject, length, or expectations until the due date. Some of these papers were supposed to be 20 paragraphs!!!!
This is his first semester teaching HUM 201, so he's been using another professor's course materials. Some things have been confusing because he's never taught the course before, but I can tell he's trying his best and he works with students about grades. I believe the next time he teaches HUM 201 it will be much better. Super kind and smart guy.
Brother Schmidt has a lot of knowledge and means well. He never seemed to take time to know the course he was teaching and didn't realize the size of some assignments until after they were due. I would not recommend taking his class unless you have to write a ton of essays and do readings on things you won't ever really discuss in class.
I was shocked by the negative comments. He is a dry lecturer, the epitome of a nerd but in all the best ways. Maybe the smartest religion professor and if you are going to take him Christian History is the way to go. His own textbook is great and I did not find him ideologically at all, he was very respectful of other religions. Hugh Nibley-esque
One of the smartest people on campus. His courses are a lot of work - but it is rewarding and never pointless. If you value truth and are willing to work to find it - Take this professor! All his courses are enlightening and offer value.
He is very offensive and rude with students. He would not answer questions ever and he never made sense with his lectures. He gives homework every day and it is long and hard. He makes you participate in moving around activities like we are five and he does not respect the student's accommodations or level of comfortableness. i do not recommend.
Never take a class with bro schmidt. i took HUM201 with him and he was terrible. he never cares what anyone has to say and never answers the questions asked. if someone raises their hand and they arent in the first two rows he doesnt not answer them and they dont exist. hes really condescending and always brags about his accomplishments.
An intelligent person, but doesn't know how to teach. On the first day of class, we were warned not to bring laptops, notebooks, or phones to class, or we would be asked to leave class. yet several times throughout the semester he would wonder why we weren't taking notes. I have learned more about his personal travels and opinions than the class.
Prof. Schmidt is very self-absorbed. he spends too much time teaching about his personal life and opinions that you don't learn about humanities you learn about Prof. Schmidt. He doesn't respond to questions and refuses to look at humanity unless it's through the lens of the Gospel.
Brother Schmidt won't follow through with BYUI Disability Accommodations. He doesn't like accommodations because "it's not fair to the other students." I have been accused of lying about reasons for absences, and Brother Schmidt would not excuse my absences until I showed him private medical documents. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES FROM THIS PROFESSOR
way too much homework for a religion class. Having to write up to 2300 words every week is ridiculous. he wont excuse assignments even if you added the class late and wont allow anyone to schedule time with him outside of his office hours. Bad at communicating, listening and teaching. If you want an easy A religion class stay away from Bro Schmidt.
Way too much work for a simple religion class. Genuinely feels difficult to feel the spirit when I am getting torn apart every time I am graded because my spiritual experiences arent detailed enough, and dont have enough citations. Not worth the effort.
Do not take this class. Bro. Schmidt makes you write thousands of words each week. He gives way too much work for a religion class. He is often arrogant and takes forever to call on you if you're at the back of class and raise your hand. He also has assignments due at 10pm and accepts NO late work.
