If you like a loose teaching style, than take him but he gives very little direction on what to do for papers. He used to be a lawyer so he makes us do tons of law readings.
Brent was a great teacher and always willing to help.
Brent was a great professor who was very helpful. I enjoyed the class because he lets us put our creativity to use. It wasn;t an easy class but he made me want to do the work.
Really awesome professor. There was a lot of work in the class, but he made the assignments fun and I was always excited to read his comments on my papers.
He is a very good professor. I learned alot from him. I believe he said he use to be a Lawyer, which is what I plan on becoming eventually. He gives tests every week, but if you study your book and do the exercises you should do well on the tests. I highly recommend him for Eng 101.
Brent is a very good teacher, his points about a specific subject are easy enough for a child to understand, yet he is somewhat chalanging at times. Passing 092 with a B gave me the confidince I need to go through the BCC Running Start program.
he has a loose teaching style as said before, and doesnt teach you how to write the papers. all he does is make you read debatable papers and then talk about it in class.
Took the class over the summer = 7 weeks. There was a lot of information in a short amount of time. His schedule format was a bit confusing making the first few weeks a bit difficult. If you did the work he graded you fairly. He is a good teacher. Would take another class from him.
He was pretty tyte. Before every test he'd go over what would be on it and it would be open book. He does have a loose teaching style but you can still learn a lot.
Great teacher and really nice guy. He expects you to be prepared and as long as you try you should do well. He can be a little tuff on the grading but overall his tests are easy. He seems to have the conception that the class is ment to improve your writing not make you foolish for trying.
Don't take this class from him, seriously. He's an ex lawyer who spends the whole time discussing law and government. Very little time actualy goes into learning the subject at hand. It is super easy, but not in a good way. If you want to get your money's worth take the class from someone else.

Very easy, he takes time to get to know you and is very helpful. Took an online class with him.
Took online english. Not very helpful at all. He dosent do anything to help you with your work. He only answered half of my questions. And is almost never active on the website. His assignments are dull and boring. And the peer review assignment is useless and non-helpful. Do not take english from this guy.
Do NOT take this class from him. He has no teaching ability. He will tell you about being a lawyer, but not how to write a paper. He refuses to discuss anything that is in the book, and will quickly belittle a student in front of the class. The entire time is spent in small/large group discussion. He never lectured on how to write.
If you are looking for a class that you do nothing but analyze stories this is the class for you.He grades hard. There doesn't seem to be any way to get an A out of this class. He is a nice guy and seems to care about the process of learning. Be prepared or be prepared to leave.
Went in the class with no knowledge of how to write. During the class I realized my highschool teacher taught more than he did about writing. Wrote 3 eassy for the entire quarter. A lot of irrelevant reading that won't help you in writing. Didn't do much most of the time so if you feel like you want this class... go for it but if u wanna learn, no!
I learned alot.. if you pay attention.. SPARK NOTES.com!!!
The class is based on analytical reading. You are expected to know how to write an essay before the class because the only writing skill he taught about was the thesis statement other than concepts which had no effect on your grade.
He used to be a lawyer, and he likes to argue with and belittle his students. He never tells you when stuff is due, his grading is subjective and you'll receive absolutely no feedback as to why you did not get the grade you deserve. Oh, and be sure to bring a pillow to his lectures and a recycle bin for the hundreds of handouts he gives.
Brent loves his handouts, at the end of a quarter you will have 500 sheets of paper from him. He also does not teach in this class, He expects you to know how to write before takeing the class. The only thing that matters to him are thesis, and analisys. be prepared for homework on a nightly basis, as he believes his class is the only one you take.
todd doesn't really teach you how to write and only gives three papers during his quarter. focus' more on grammar than composition of essays. he is fond of group work and hand outs. lots and lots of hand outs..
Did not like this teacher. He doesn't explain what he wants clearly enough. There's stupid grammar tests that just brought down peoples grades. For our 3rd paper, he gave us 3 days to make a first draft! He gives a ton of handouts that you have to print out yourself from online, and it's annoying to cart them all around. Don't take this teacher!
Save yourself from being embarrassed. I came from an ok english background and it seemed everything i said was wrong. he makes you participate then belittles you for it. he makes you print off many useless pages, i used a whole ink cart. and its true, he does just expect you to know how to do things. do not take him
Mr. Todd is a good teacher but not for someone whose just trying to get by. He was very critical of my writing at times but it made me a better writer. He gives a lot of grammar test but those are open notes. He gives plenty of handouts so keep them together. He does have this mannerism of touching his chest while talking that might get annoying.
Nice guy, kind of rambles sometimes but the work load isn't bad and there are some interesting assignments. He does grade hard but it is fair.
Easy workload but very hard to get an A or A-. Only teaches grammar. Even if you try hard on papers usually gives you a B. But just show up and it's easy. I'm sure anyone can pass with his grammar handout. I suck at grammar so that put me down a grade. Other profs are easier other than him and Harada. He doesn't explain how to write but he's nice.
Pretty easy class, not much is expected of you except grammar concepts but they actually really help! Lots of group stuff!
He's a really nice guy and the class is very easy. Doesn't teach you how to write but does a lot of grammar which is helpful. I don't know why people say it's hard to get an A. All you have to do is show up to class and try. Isn't that the whole point of college anyways? And his grammar tests are all open-book. How hard is it that? Seriously..
He is ok. I wouldn't recomend him. Although its easy, it isnt challenging. Some assignments are creative, but others are boring.
I liked this class but it was hard. He was a challenging teacher but his high expectations were good for me. I liked the group work and I thought it made the class a lot more fun. The gramamr tests are stupid but he drops your lowest scores so if you study and bring your notes they're not a big deal.
His class was very easy, I'm not sure why people said it was hard to get an A. Only take it if you already know how to write and only need English 101 as a prerequisite, however. Don't expect to actually learn how to write in his class. He's a nice guy and he doesn't give too much work. I'd recommend his class to those already good at English.
Brent is a very nice man, but his class was on the edge of being ridiculously stupid. I felt like I was in 6th grade again. The work was way too easy, so you don't have any reason to fail! Nice man though.
I love this professor. He was easy to talk to, and made the class fun. Tests were easy, as well as the weekly assignments. Two group projects that were a blast. I highly recommend him
Nice man, but the class was WAY to easy! I felt like I was in elementary school again...embarrassing really! There is essentially nothing to do in that class; take it if you don't know the English language well.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is rather easy, but has no idea how to teach and make his students into better writers. He gives good grades to mediocre essays and mediocre grades to good ones. I learned nothing from his class, and he made me feel as though i had gone back to the 5th grade.
I loved him. The class discussions got really deep sometimes, it was more than just learning English, it dove into philosophy as well. I thought he had a really good grasp on what he was teaching.
Todd is a good teacher. i actually learned something in his class. after attending his class i can actually write in a coherent fashion. i would recommend his class to anyone who has trouble with writing.
Todd is a great teacher. he is a bit difficult but you will actually lean something so suck it up cause you will likely get a good grade if you do all the work.
He's a nice guy, but his class is usually boring. On the up side, there is not that much homework and you only have to write to essays. The problem is that on tests and essays, he doesn't give any feedback, just a score so you never know what you are doing wrong. Not the worst teacher, but definetly not the best.
I made the mistake of going with this class because of the convenience (it fit my schedule), now I'm left wishing I hadn't. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a pretty nice guy, but I often question his competence as a teacher. I was expecting to learn more about English composition, not going over things we went over in elementary school. Boy was I wrong.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!He forgets that he is teaching ENGLISH 101. He kills trees with all of his handouts and you end up spending more time on his work than any of your other classes. If he is your last choice, wait until next quarter.
I really enjoyed this class. If you do the handouts, which he gives you all the answers to, you will ACE all the grammar tests. You occasionaly write a short essay and they are about EXTREMLY general topics. I would reccommmend him to anyone who has the work ethic of a worm and is only slightly smart. ITS EASY!!!!!!
This class was a mistake to take in the morning. I was always struggling to stay awake because we spent a large amount of class time going over grammar. I'd say most of what we went over was TEDIOUS review. Most of the papers were short and sweet. His SEP tests were the closest thing to the experience I wanted, but we hardly talked about them.

The only real problem about the class was waking up early in the morning since it was at 6:30. I learned alot and really enjoyed the class. I thought the grammer was very useful. One of the first English classes i actually enjoyed. I recommend this class to anyone that can show up every day and put in some effort to learn.
Challenging class but learned a lot
If you expect to learn a lot on how to write a good paper, you may be a bit disappointed. Brent expects you to study hard by your own and come to class to show your knowledge. His syllabus & calendar are well organized. You know beforehand what you will learn from each class. He's very nice guy & willing to talk to you after class. Lots of readings
i loved mr. todd!
Nice guy, grammar tests were easy. Short essays weren't hard. Remember to bring the required materials to class.
This is the hiker/climber teacher. He is nice but he is a hard grader. If you want an A, you better go to class (you get three absences not counted against you, but if you get more than 3 it takes away a tenth of your participation grade)! There's a lot of stories and essays you have to read, make sure you do because he will dismiss you if not.
Umm, never had a teacher like this one. He gets really mad at his students, seems partial to guys, sports players and pretty girls. Gives out a ton of reading and lots of work that keeps you busy all the time. I don't think he enjoys his job. If you're a slacker, he will love you and carry you along. If you work hard/good student, you might get an A
You don't have to buy a textbook. He posts everything you need on the course website. 6 Grammar tests are esay. Essays are harder. He doesn't care about how many words you write, but he foucs on your ideas in your essays. He care about your attendance. If you are late more than three times, he will talk to you after class. Overall,he is a nice guy.
Quite an interesting teacher. I thought we'd actually need the textbooks, but he posts all the readings and assignment handouts on his website (you'll use a LOT of paper printing all these out, though, so use the computer lab for this). Grammar tests were easy, and essays were moderately easy. You also get 2-3 group projects, but no final exam. :)
Forgot on my last review... Make SURE you do the reading. He really expects his students to do it, and the SEP (Stories/Essays/Poems) tests actually require you to have read the material to give a good answer. He has a long list of readings, making it hard to predict which of them he's going to test you on.
Hey does anybody whio had this guy know how hard he grades his Paper 2, Presentations, and Eng journal assignment?
He is crystal clear about expectations, provides a lot of feedback, and genuinely cares for his students' success. He initially appears easy-going, but he expects initiative.
He gives out test every week and the first week in February you have 1 test on Monday, essay due on Tuesday, start an essay on Tuesday, Friday you have a mid-term over everything covered along with a essay due. His short answer essay questions are analyzing poems and if you don't think as him or draw the same conclusion you will not get a A.
Very good!!!!!!
Interesting teacher, fun to listen to his stories. I found alot of insight and knowledge to be gained through his class but be prepared to study. His tests are no joke and I think he grades a little tough on the essays. Also a little too quiet to pay attention to at 0630.
Todd's a good prof. He's tough as hell, be prepared to read more than you ever have. But, he'll teach you a lot of cool stuff, not just about English. His stories are funny, humor is dry but ultimately if you're there with a good attitude and try, he'll make sure you get a good grade.
He's really funny and so interesting. However, he can be a bit mean sometimes and can be a little harsh. don't expect him to give you much help, but listen to what he has to say and take notes.
While I took Todd's class last year and had to drop, he was a much better teacher then. Unfortunately, he's become far more distracted and digresses far more in lectures than last year, or I just forgot that he already did that... His latest class is 8:30 AM... Not a morning person...
The class is really good, but requires a lot of work. There is too much class work and SEP readings which you need to make sure to keep up with. At some times class can get boring, but he makes sure to add a little fun here and there. You'll get a lot out of this class though.
This guy really doesn't want to teach, not sure why he does. I've seen other reviews all comforming he's not a morning person, too bad he spends half of the time complaining about the students.
He was interesting to listen to, and assignments were not tough. However, his stories distracted from class time, and he gave very little direction on essays and papers.
Do not take this teacher if you struggle with english or writing. He gives little to no direction on class assignments and projects and is rude if you try and ask him questions pertaining to the material. Very stric grader that expects you to do perfect on every assignment from the beggining and his grading reflects that.
This class is not easy if you can not stay organized and have trouble doing homework before coming to class. He likes to call students out for not having read or not knowing answers. He can also be very moody and sometimes comes off rude to the class. Only take if you are decent and willing to work at english.
He was an alright teacher, sometimes he can be indecisive and unsure of himself. I'd say that his class requires a decent amount of work and overall, he's average in terms of teaching skills.
He is one of the beast teacher I had. He is a responsible teacher who can help student very well. I loved to be in his class and learn more from his strong teaching experience and skills. I highly recommend you to take his class. I am sure if you do so, you would not be sorry. He is # one.
He's a good guy, and his teaching is not difficult to understand. But a lot of reading and not a whole lot of usage of it. Grading wise, he's pretty loose. Teaching, he's alright. Doing the homework is sporadic, and if you hate grammar, do not take him. Textbooks are not necessary, but the grammar book comes helpful on quizzes. Most are open note.
He is a really funny and nice guy. He teaches a lot of bare bones grammar which is pretty easy. test every week but their almost all open note. there is a lot of reading but its all short and some of the time you can get away without reading it if you're really lazy. my only complaint is that he doesn't give enough feedback on essays.
Despite all that is said on the first day, it is possible to get away without having the books or printing everything. Then again, I took AP Lang/Comp last year. I would say most in my class did not struggle but they applied themselves. There is a lot of reading but to write well you must read well and read all that you can.
Good teacher. Very orginized. Everything is online from the start of class. The LWP text book along with the Grammer one is not really needed. Tests were the only thing I struggled with. TAKE GOOD NOTES and you'll do fine.
He is very difficult to understand. He doesn't give you feedback on your writing either; just puts a grade on it. You will have no idea on how to improve.
Very clear on deadlines. Curriculum isn't very difficult if you paid any attention in sophomore English. Doesn't play "favorites" but he definitely likes students who at least look like they're paying attention. Take notes!! He'll think you're great :D Ask him questions, too, he likes curious students.
He is a very precise, clear teacher. Attendance is a must since he puts it into your grade. He is funny, but strict. Class is not too hard.
Take notes and pay attention in class. If you hates grammar, don't take his class. But if you're good at grammar, just take his class. Attendance is mandatory so don't skip class.
If you want to learn how to write good luck!No Feedback on any of the essays, grades seem to be made up. Grammar- nightmare! Getting an A is almost impossible, teahcer is sacrastic, doesnt answer questions, get a good printer and lots of paper, he is an ex-laweyr with big ego.
I would not recommend this teacher. If one student does not follow his expectations perfectly, he uses hospitable sarcasm towards the whole class. I learned a lot of grammar in his class, but I hated going to class every day.
I had to take Ewan Magie class to get that B.T. was the best teacher. He organized, so you will know the whole schedule and hw right in the beginning. Interesting readings, grammar quizzes, some writing and class participation that's all what you'll have. He hates when smd is late or didn't read the material. it's not obvious, but he's really kind.
Tough but fair. Very thorough. Covers punctuation and grammar weekly. Utilize the writing lab for help with editing on papers, and start papers early. Exams are HARD - plan ahead how you will bullet point the stories, etc. being covered on the exam.
Brent is a good professor. if you want to learn how to write this is not the class for you. he does not give back any feedback. But the class is not hard if your just going to get a passing grade. He takes attendence everyday so dont skip!!
Difficult teacher. Expect homework/reading every night, an essay/project every 2 weeks, and a grammar test almost every week. Todd tends to make a lot of references to death. Will provide insightful ideas once in a while. Graded essays have a score without any feedback. Definitely a hard class.
About the most straight forward teacher possible. Makes you work hard, but if you work, it will pay off. Thinks a lot of himself, but definitely wants students to succeed. If you're willing to put in a lot of work and learn a lot, take him.
Takes attendance every day. No feed back. 6 grammar test, 1 every week for first 6 weeks. Pretty easy class as long as you take notes everyday and do your reading which is assigned almost every night. And has at least 2 group assignment which are ridiculous because its hard to time manage with so many other people. Well organized site, used alot.
As long as you do your homework and take lots of notes, you shouldn't have a hard time. Make sure to work really hard on assignments and read all handouts carefully
Admittedly, Eng101 isn't the most exciting subject, but thanks to Brent I really enjoyed it. He has clear, fair and thoughtful expectations of his students, which have clearly been mistaken here by those who failed to put in the effort. If you are a committed student and would like to become a truly effective and confident writer, TAKE THIS CLASS.
He does not go into depth on assignments, if you are someone who needs more assistants in class or extended explanations on topics I would not recommend this teacher He seems to not have very much patience for anything really. The class is fast paced and but as long as you take full advantage of campus resources you should be able to pass his class
Mr. Todd is fair-minded and clear. It is easy to pass his class, but it is very hard to get an A. It is possible to get A if your do your beeessstt and invest a lot of time.
Terrible teacher, whole class was focused on grammar tests, essays were worth 100 points and grammar tests were worth 80 points. If you miss 4 classes, automatic fail.If you are EXCELLENT in grammar, this is the class for you, if not, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Mr Todd is a great professor. He gives lots of assignments and homeworks, however, do not give up.make sure you come to class and take notes (very important)!!I liked his class because he gave us a variety of grammar, poertry, essay and short stories! its a lot of work but it is not hard at all!!
If you are looking for a grammar teacher, go ahead and take this class. Also if you like note taking, this is the class for that. No feedback on papers. Only grades. He also gives a lot of reading assignments, and requires a lot of really random information from them. He has a really big ego as well. Would not take his class again.
Bad teacher. Sarcastic, doesn't know when he is out of line, harasses students needlessly. I'm sure he's a great writer but doesn't understand the concept of teaching. I am honestly surprised he hasn't yet been in trouble for the way he treats his students.
he is fair teacher. A lot of assignments and reading and you should take notes in his class.
Mr. Todd's class was not bad, or good. He likes to lecture for very long periods of time. Take notes, print out the handouts, turn in your work and take advantage of the extra credit he throws at you. Almost all of his tests/quizzes are open book, meaning easy points. Attendance counts as part of your grade so try not to skip.
I hated this class. It was pretty easy because we learned grammar which I had learned many times before. He drops the lowest grammar test score. Also, he tests (twice) on short stories that we read and drops the lowest grade of those tests. We also had to write essays, one of which was a group essay. If you want to learn don't take his class.
If you do all the work then you will pass easy. All his tests and quizzes are open book which makes for easy points. He doesn't give any feedback on your essays, just gives a grade. He is always willing to talk to you after class which is nice.
Class is very organized. Everything is layed out at the begining of the quarter. I am not good at English but got a good grade. Does take a lot of time. A lot of readings and tests but they are usually open book and easy. Hard grader on essays. Gives extra credit. It is hard to stay awake, but thats also bevause it is at 7:30 am.
Expect to read everyday! You need to put a LOT of efforts in this class. Grammar test are easy though. And don't be late because it'll hurt your grade. Be in time.
