Brent is so funny and entertaining--this has been one of the best classes
very good teacher. sometimes, lectures get REALLY boring, but hey, it's a bible lit class. he tells you EXACTLY what will be on each quiz/test. EXACTLY. he's very very very understanding and has a lot of respect for his students. not uptight at all.
Could not say a bad thing about this class or teacher. If you are a believer, this class can be a good chance to get a great overview of the OT and NT, wish the class would have been longer! Warning though, his views are not exactly mainstream.
Theres no reason not to get a A+ in Brents class he gives you practically the whole guideline and answers to get an A. His class is interesting, many things u never heard about Christianity.
Hard class! You have to carry a 900page book to class everyday with terms. He teaches well but when he teaches Bible Literature class, it's all false teaching. This guy doesn't know Christianity at all. Even God is against false teaching.
very KNOWLEDGEABLE and FRIENDLY! There is NO need to carry the textbook to class. He is very easy considering he TELLS YOU WHAT'S ON THE TESTS. BEST CLASS to fulfill the GE. He is an EXCELLENT teacher.
very good professor. never wanted to miss a lecture because they were so interesting. very smart man. strengthened my faith in god. taught me what is real and what is just a misinterpretation or misconception about the bible!! easy teacher
He was very helpful and made the class fun. I never missed a class. He makes it very interesting. If you just show up you can pass because everything is from what he says. he doesn't give big papers just 5 2page papers and only quizes no midterms. th
Great class, great teacher.
KNOWS his material. He has the largest private library on ancient christian writings in the country. Passionate about the subject and it shows. If you disagree he won't argue but give the historical background for your argument (and his). Provides optional material for understanding and easy quizes.
One of the best teachers ive had. Take this if you want an easy A. He practically gives you the answers on the tests. If ur a hardcore christian you wont like this. But if ur a pretty liberal christian then you'll like it. Its a good experience.
Truly knowledgable of subject matter, wrote extensive notes before each of his lectures. 5 short essays, 5 quizzes, and a take home final essay. Straight forward, if you can well stay awake. No ventilation in room at all, fell asleep way too easily each time. Good honest professor
Truly one of the best instructors at SJSU. Taking his classes is one of the highlights of my education. He definitely knows his stuff when it comes to the area of religion. Five short two page essays and 5 quizzes (he drops the lowest score) and a final. Very generous curve on top of that.
He is great, helpful, funny and some times corny.
Fun, energetic, informative, fair
Prof. Walters is excellent, the best professor I have had in all four years in this university. I can't imagine someone more fascinating as an instructor or as a person. His knowledge is incredible and spontaneous. If you take one class on this campus, anything Prof. Walters teaches is worthwhile.
Remarkable thinker. Able to say a lot about everything. Kind and approachable. Handsome. The best class I've ever had on this campus. Highly recommended. Single, I believe.
Brilliant spontaneous thinker. Friendly guy who is always willing to answer questions and help you better understand the subject. Ultimately, this class was the highlight of my semester
Prof Walters is the most intelligent thinker on this campus. His insight is second to none I've encountered. He is cute and funny (in a sweet, dorky way) and full of energy. You have to take this guy ... it will change your life forever.
This guy is awesome! Very funny and intelligent. You could only wish other professors could be just like him :)
Awesome professor. One of the best lecturers I've encountered. Makes topics that can be hard to digest (or boring) more interesting and understandable. Exams requires a lot of studying and memorizing. Other than that, there are only 5 short essays due (they are fairly easy to write). Curves in the end.
This is an excellent professor who is extremely brilliant as well as entertaining. He is very prepared for each class, provides outlines (that he follows), is a fair grader, and a genuinely nice person. He is the best on campus, as far as I am concerned. My only issue is that students often have no idea how lucky they are to have him teach them.
This guy rocks!! Totally smart, knows his stuff and actually wants you to pass his class. And get this! When he says something will be on a test he means it. He doesnt waste his time trying to confuse you. You rock Mr. Walters! I ill be taking more of your classes, count on it!!
Likewise this class was an enlightenment; you will never hear this stuff anywhere else. I came to Rateyourprofessor just to give this guy props! You Rock Walters! Provides reading but just for show; he 'd rather just teach than give out hw and essays and tests -which is friggen awsome- but the school makes him I bet Lol! A MUST HAVE GE!
He was a very.....interesting and funny teacher. His topics are very intriguing. Anyway, you need to study for his quizes but his essays are really easy. He curves all of his tests. It's not hard. I recommend taking his class.
Prof. Walters has done the impossible, he found a way to make this class worth taking. His humor and honesty about writing is refreshing and his off-beat personality suits this class well. My only complaint is that I did not take this class at the beginning of my college days. On a more personal note: he's a nice man with a sincere desire to teach.
You must take this class. You will be jipped if you leave SJSU and don't take him. He is so intriguing. This is not a hard class. He made me want to change majors! He is funny, smart, interesting, and a great lecturer. Big warning: TIME FLIES IN HIS CLASS....He leaves you wanting more...
Awesome class! I entered dreading the topic and now find it fascinating. I don't think this would have happened with another professor.
A fantastic and enthusiastic lecturer who is able to extract the essential from a huge bulk of material. Dr. Walters is intellectually challenging and rewarding.

I just finished Dr. Walters' class on Western Religion. What a rare opportunity. Ever have one of those professors who you know has more to say than he does? Walters is like that. He is seldom stumped in class and runs it half lecture/seminar. His wisdom is amazing and his approach is fresh and rewarding. You gotta take this class. I'll take anothe
Take this class. take it under prof Walters. he knows wht he's teaching. He knows his material. Its a simple class, yet it teaches you alot. I had my doubts b4 going in. But after his class, I know where i stand. He's a good dedicated lecturer who only wants to show you the truth that he has learnt, and nothing more. Trust me, take his class!
the best teacher i've ever had at SJSU. very interesting and knows what he is talking about. captivating. i recommend any of his classes!!!
This class was soo awsome. It was interesting and I really enjoyed it. He is a great teacher. the quizzes and finals were hard because it is so much to remember. But he gives you study guides for them. You do not need to do the regular readings, just read what is assigned for the papers. Go to class because of pop quizzes!
loved his class, didn't pass it cuz i got behind in the reading, but I still loved his class.
He's a great guy and is allways willgin to help. He goes above and beyond to make sure students succeed. Classes often go off on tangents and I can't say that I learned as much as I wish I had, but I still really enjoyed the class. He is always willing to help (and I mean ALWAYS!)
Wonderful teacher; best I've had on campus. Funny, thought-provoking, quirky, and smart. Better than an iPod, more meaningful than a boyfriend, more helpful than Wikipedia. Tells you everything expected of you and provides detailed assignment sheets. I can't imagine why everyone doesn't take him. Walters will make you learn yet make it applicable.
This class should be required for everyone in order to get a degree.
All I have to say is Prof. Walters knows his stuff. To the T! He has like the largest library on early christianity on the west coast of something like that. Class is great and you learn alot. Quizes and Exams may be difficult but he gives study guides that prepare you. Overall, great teacher and great class.
You gotta take this cl**** to believe it. Prof Walters is funny and friendly yet expects you to learn. He is enthusiastic and nutty, but approachable, not like a few others in the department. I'd take anything from this guy. He has lots of images to show and many cartoons relating to the topic. Most don't know it, but he is on the radio a lot.
Very helpful and answers any question. makes class very fun!
This class is the best class that I had ever taken. He is kinda intimidating at first, but as you get to know him, he is fun and approchable. He eats at TOGOS every Mondays and wednesdays. Very COOL teacher. He definitely knows what he is teaching.
AWESOME CLASS! Looks at Bible and Judaism and Christianity from a very factual and HISTORICAL perspective. He's no Bible-hugging zealot. FASCINATING lectures. There is an essay, and it is hard. Otherwise--TAKE the class. OH! He doesn't have a textbook, but sells a CD for $88 with ALL you need for the class. You're going to want to buy it.
Fascinating teacher! You know the question " if you could invite one person, dead or alive, to dinner, who would it be..." Walters makes my list. He really knows his stuff and gets it across to a very broad audience in a ridiculously interesting way. His curve is crazy, so even if you get and F, it's still a B.
This guy is one of a kind. I have taken classes for twenty years and have never encountered anyone quite like him. His knowledge is amazing, but his ability to communicate it is even better. This course should be mandatory, because you leave it realizing how much you were not told in church and how little the media seems to know about religion.
Nice. Approachable. Smart. Funny. Informative. Clever. Unique. South Park. Library. Single. Media. Dr. Pepper. Writer. Quick. Friendly. Wish I Knew Him Better.
This class was easy in the sense that I didn't have to do much reading outside class, aside from the reviews and class was once a week. The 4 quizzes and final were hard so you need to study a lot- don't procrastinate! Walters has a great personality and trys to make class fun... VERY passionate and loves Dr. Pepper.
Awesome knowledge & love the lectures - no sleeping or drifting off in his classes 'cause he keeps you engaged. Learned more about the Bible & early Christianity than you thought possible. No judgement or prejudice for or against the religions discussed, just the facts.
Prof Walters is the most helpful and patient teacher I've ever had at SJSU. He listens to the problem and then helps you solve it in a very clever way, not being preachy or officious. His use of the English language is amazing and his sense of humor is refreshing. I will take another class from him soon, and you should also.
I had Brent Walters in the last century! I graduated in 2000. But, Brent Walters is one of my all-time favorite teachers.
Brent Walters is hilarious, engaging, intelligent and has great respect for his students. I graduated in 2000, but still remember his class and rate it among my all-time favorites! He makes you think, but really gives you exactly the information you need for tests. As long as you pay attention and focus, you should'nt have a problem passing!
really funny prof. uses a cd as a book. all the info/lecture stuff are in there as well as the words and stuff for the quizzes and final. tests are kinda hard, so study for them. curves the class, so that's the good thing. tends to show a lot of overhead images.
Fascinating lectures. Professor Walters knows more about the history of Christianity and everything related to it than anybody I've ever encountered or heard of. His knowledge is encyclopedic and his classes always keep your attention.
His class was very interesting. I respected everything he said and his points of view. I learned a lot and he really made me think about the bible. The only thing I did not like about his class is that he does not provide any outlines for lecture. I found lectures hard to follow and not too organized. He gives great study guides.
I would definitely reccommend Prof. Walters. He is very knowledgeable and taught me a lot about writing. He is approachable and kind but tends to digress onto different subjects ie: religion. He grades on a curve and that is very helpful. I recieved an A.
To succeed in this class, make sure you get the CD and the review sheets for each quiz/exam. The answers for the test come straight out of the CD (Glossary and other sources), so put together study sheets with those entries for each of the review sheets and you'll do fine. This process is much more important/useful than the lectures or class notes.
I loved going to this class and hearing the lectures. He gives all the info you need for the quizzes that he gives, instead of having midterms. He does everything that he can to enable you to succeed and it's up to you if you want to seize the opportunity. Sad to see the class end. A really great professor with a honest personality.
He is an amazing professor. He always makes sure you understand the material you are learning and is happy to help you outside of class. His lectures are very engaging and interesting. He gives you a study guide for all quizzes and exams. He's also really funny and a professor you can easily approach without feeling intimidated or inferior.
Creates a fun enviroment. exxtremely easy an approachable. But, rips you off for $100 for a CD.
Cool teacher. Easy.
Prof. Walters knows the content of the course inside out, but his exams are ridiculous. Strict memorization! I remember the study guide had 40 terms, and if you think that's hard, watch when he combines it all for the final. 4 exams: 1 essay, 1 MC, 1 t/f matching, 1 other one and the final has all the formats. there's a massive curve and 6pg paper
Incredible teacher. Best I ever had. Nice as can be. Smartest guy on this topic I can imagine. Approachable and well liked. Nice appearance. Has radio show, no wonder.
Pure genius. Prof Walters' lectures are like a symphony of various disciplines and facts. By far the best I've had and only those who do not attend class would say otherwise.
When I heard that a fellow student wrote untrue statements about Prof Walters, I had to submit my take. He is brilliant, and the person who wrote badly of him does not attend class and is arrogant and positional. Anyone taking this class knows the truth. Prof Walters is an amazing teacher but some cannot hear without prejudice.
Very knowledgeable and helpful. Just do the 2-pg essays and do well in the quizzes and the final.
Really great professor. You need to purchase a CD which has everything. Gives a study guide, so there are no surprises. Also there's a curve, ended up getting an A-Best to take the class if you haven't been exposed to religion.Interesting facts about him:has a radio show and likes Dr. Pepper.
Great and awesome teacher! Lectures were never boring and each day you learn something fascinating about early Christianity. Has a great sense of humor and knows how to engage his students about the Bible. Very interesting class and from a Christian's point of view, it was fascinating to learn stuff they don't mention at church.
i was sad when the semester was over because i would have so much fun in this class, i had to miss it once and am still sad i did. he is an amazing professor and his lectures are chalk full of information. the only way you couldn't like it is if you don't go. there are no surprises in his exams. oh and he loves Dr. Pepper =]
This class was ok. If you are religious, i dont suggest taking the class. The tests and papers are challenging, and i found the course not very interesting. 110 dollar cd?! class is on a curve, so its not that easy to get an A. Hes funny but can say some remarks that people could take offense to.
Intelligent & well-versed. Material was interesting, but easy to get lost sometimes during lecture. Hard to communicate w/through email and sticks strictly to overheads and lecture. 4 short papers, 4 quizzes, but a 200 pt final! Provides study guides and grades on a curve, which is helpful but lots of memorization.
Brent was the most eye-opening professor I've ever had. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking further truth and context in the Bible. It is amazing how many times he blew my mind by exposing common misconceptions of popular Christian belief. Super nice, funny, and intelligent. This man is a walking encyclopedia of Biblical knowledge.
Impossible to communicate with. He will not return any emails or phone calls, so no use trying. Lectures had some interesting material but could get boring.
Lectures are agonizing to sit through. He jumps around alot and gives out way TOO MUCH information. He bases his grades on 4 quizzes, a 10 page paper, and a final exam. There is no homework, but his tests are rather hard. He makes you memorize key terms. The quizzes range from 30-50 terms and his final is based on 100 terms. A good memory is key.
Professor Walters is by far the best writing teacher I've ever had. He's consistent, thorough, approachable and funny. He doesn't dumb-down material, and his criticism is always constructive. At first I was stressed about the class, but he grades more than fairly so I did well. I could listen to his lectures over and over. A very enjoyable class.
Prof Walters is the most intelligent teacher I have taken during my academic life. He is insightful and clever and bases his conclusions on history rather than myths. He is cute and funny, smart and witty, and this every student should take into consideration. His Rel 90 class will change your perception about religion as well as your worldview.
He's a very enthusiastic teacher. The tests and quizzes are a bit challenging because there's so much material to memorize. I didn't find the class interesting.
Professor Walters is witty and brilliant. I did not know at first if I liked his approach but in the end it was the only one possible. His looks grow on you also; he's quite handsome. More important is the breadth of his knowledge; it is unsurpassed. And I have taken lots of courses on this subject. His class on Bible history is amazing.
Prof Walters is clever in his approach to HUM90. He challenges students and his powerpoint presentations for each lecture look professionally done. I took his course due to a friend's recommendation, and I'm glad I did. I learned more from him than all other teachers last semester. He is witty, smart, and yes handsome (but in a geeky sort of way).
The readings for this class were mostly from academic journals which are not the easiest to digest, but they opened my eyes to the value of a true liberal arts education and for that I'm extremely grateful. I only wished his lectures stayed more on point since he often ran out of time before finishing his lecture slides for the day.
While I was initially intimidated at his knowledge, Prof Walters's explanations and written prompts helped a lot. I had no idea how much work went into college-level research; you sure learn in this course. If you want to be a better writer this is the class to take, but not if you are lazy. I found him approachable and charming (but professional).
Prof Walters opened my eyes to the nature of education and on being a teacher. Throughout the semester I was amazed at his approach to the topic, because he was very prepared. He is very approachable, but I recommend that you meet him at his office; he will treat you like family. SJSU is lucky to have him, and I plan to take everything he teaches.
I just ran into Prof Walters this semester after taking his course last year. What a nice man. He answered my questions even though I was no longer his student and he was just as charming and funny out of class as in it. If he were only younger ... anyway, I just wanted to say that he is genuine out of class as well as in class.
The most intelligent man I have ever spoken to or known. Loves pop quizzes when attendance is low. Answers any question regardless of relation to topic or obscurity. Very knowledgeable & interesting to listen to, he doesn't mind if you respectfully challenge his idea. Will challenge your "knowledge" on religion and expand your worldview.
Incredible teacher. Very clear assignments and clearly passionate about his subject matter. Dates and assignments are quite clear. He has no bias and clearly is well versed in history and language. His lectures have a great deal of focus on original intent. Possibly one of the best professors in my college career.
Brilliant, charismatic, great lecturer, a true intellectual, AND a wonderful person!
Good class's & easy to pass
The 4 test are killers along with the 200 question final, good thing he grades on a curve. But awesome professor.
Knowledgeable and Witty. Easy class, but you need to work for it.
I had Walters for HUM100W and HUM85. HUM 85 was really easy, read the articles, and do the prompt questions a week or two into the semester. No final for either class. Show up once in a while since its a once a week class, he remembers faces. Other than that, sit back and just listen, he tends to tell very amusing stories and goes off on tangents.
Prof. Walters is the best teacher on this campus. I just graduated after six years on this campus and he was my best professor of the lot. He is approachable and humorous, and for my money he was the best bargain at the university due to his breadth of knowledge and skill at delivering it to student familiar with the material or just learning it.
4 quizzes and one final that are pretty tough, they're are all on a curve so thats a plus. He is very passionate about the topics, but the lectures are so long. There is no book but a pricey CD that he has and is essential for the final and term paper.
I would not mind spending an entire semester with Brent Walters just asking him questions and learning what he knows. The smartest teacher I've ever had, Walters is not pretentious but honest to the facts. I find him funny, cleaver, insightful, and kind. I highly recommend him as a teacher. He is not afraid of controversy and listens well to others
Professor Walters is great! He truly wants his students to pass his class. As long as you show up to class and turn in the work that he assigns, you will at least get a B. To get an A in his class just put in a bit more work such as correct your papers as best as you can. I highly recommend going to his office hours, since not many do so.
Beware if you take your own Christian religion seriously. Whether you follow theology closely or not, he does a really good job at convincing you about what he sees as facts. His class was extensive with a lot of GREAT material, but I felt like he could be kind of one sided and too sure about some facts that DO have different interpretations.
Dr. Walters is one of the coolest people I've ever met; however, he may appear distant at first. He is funny and approachable, and at times remarkably insightful. I would like to be his aid, in order to learn his real personality, because I find it difficult to believe he not a genius. While very professional, he is charming in an old school way.
Best professor at San Jose state!! This class is one to take if youre interested in religion but dont come in thinking you know it all. Prepare to learn and unlearn. 3 quizzes, final, and paper. Study ahead bc YOU NEED TO STUDY; he curves so youll be just fine. You need to try hard to fail this class. Its truly a gem at SJSU.
Just took professor Walters in the spring and it was by far the best course I've ever taken for a general. bible history and literature is a must have, you will not regret going to San Jose state if you take this class.
I wouldve loved to take this professor but IN PERSON. Online made it so much harder and since the lectures are so big whatever you memorize from the class is all you can use. He doesnt send lectures or anything like that. Hes very caring and passionate. Definitely recommend his in person classes. Not a big fan of online.
3 quizzes (3rd one was the final), term paper, no hw. Curves everything, so it's easy, BUT no feedback about what was wrong on anything. Grade letter was returned by email, nothing else. Doesn't use Canvas, only email and zoom. Likes it when you talk to him and have your camera on in class. Text on screen, but elaborates verbally so listen.
Continuous lecture, mini breaks. Completely monotone throughout the whole thing. He really cares though for his students, and he has a cute kid. His mic quality is kind of terrible though.
3 tests, one paper and that's it. Lectures: 3 hours long, lots of mini-breaks, most people tune out halfway. Tests: easy, he looks for general knowledge, answers don't have to be crazy specific. Subject matter can be difficult to listen, but he's a nice guy, just wants people to care about this subject, so a little effort can go a long way.
Rewriting my previous review which was the one before this. Apparently, it is his last semester of teaching and is retiring, so he did everything in an easy way since they can't fire him anyway!
Talks lightly that you can't even hear him, even sitting close to the front. Doesn't utilize canvas or upload slides to it to review. Not tech savvy. Has a unique way of doing research papers, so you have to relearn. But is very easy!
