He does not explain anything, and when you email him a simple question, he only tells you to go to his office hours to answer questions. The notes are super bland, and he does not tell you how he got the answer, only writes it down. The homework is extremely timely and hard. He has said that he enjoys making tests extremely hard as well.
I took this class as a base level math class, and I really enjoyed Professor Lockhart. His lectures were easy to understand and we were given an outline of every class notes throughout the semester. While there is a lot of homework, it genuinely helps you understand the material and will be an easy guide to ace every test.
Not to bad. If you aren't that good at math you need to work for your grade. He is wiling to help at office hours.
Homework is long and hard and he doesn't give you feedback on how to get the right answer unless you go to office hours. He also says he "doesn't believe in exam reviews" and he doesn't "believe in retakes" The only "nice" thing he does is replace your lowest exam score with the final if you do good.
Nobody in my math 140 class liked this professor, he openly attempts to trick us on the tests..
Makes his own exams and enjoys making them as challenging as possible. Don't recommend at all!
Very blunt and negative professor. He does not explain very well, expects for students to know the information beforehand, makes his tests SUPER hard and TRICKY and he stated he enjoys making the exams hard for his students. I do NOT recommend this professor unless you're extremely talented at math or else you have to very hard for your grade.
While I did not struggle in this class, it is easy to see why others do not enjoy Professor Lockhart. He enjoys making his tests in a way that tricks the students, and he will count your answers wrong simply for not writing them in the exact words that he would. I feel like I am studying more to counteract his tricks, rather than understand math.
Do not take him. This is his first year as a professor and nobody in my math 140 class likes him. (i know he gave himself that good rating) He loves to trick you on exams. We just took an exam and only 6 students out of 600 got a 100, AND WE GO TO A&M! This is a base level math class and it feels like calculus the way he grades and teaches.
HORRILE!! im sorry, i dont wanna be rude, but this man has really DUG DEEEEEP UNDER MY SKIN. i tried to like him, i really did, but his rude comments and inconsiderate grading are too hard to look past. I can't believe I am paying for a professor who wants his students to fail to educate me.
Worst Math Professor you could take. He does not care about his students at all! He also wants you to fail. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He doesn't care about his students and intentionally makes the class harder than it should be. AVOID!
This man is truly the worst math teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He is so difficult and grades so picky. When he teaches, he works out problems with no explanation of what he is doing. TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.
Absolutely terrible professor. He creates the tests on his own and if you don't write down exactly what he wants you get it wrong. I took AP AB calculus in high school and I am struggling to pass this course because he makes it so difficult.
He is probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He intentionally makes homework and tests harder than they need to be. He even said that the average for our first test was too high, so he wanted to make the second test harder. He does not care about the success of his students. TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!!
All I will say is do not take him. Horrible professor and horrible person too. Taking him is the only thing I regret doing in life.
I would not recommend this professor. I tried to get along with him but his grading is very specific. I had trouble studying for a BASIC math course even though I took AP Calculus last year. All I have to say is, this professor makes things way too specific and it hurts his students' grades.
This class definitely isnt an easy A, it relies heavily on tests that were true to the material, but time limits make them difficult. This professors puts a lot of work into his class, which means its not a blow off, but if you pay attention and try, you learn a lot. He is good at explaining the material but watch out for trick questions!
I personally never took this class but my roommate did and she 0/10 recommends this class. This professor told the class that he wants to fail them and makes the class super challenging. I personally have experienced my smart and driven roommate work hard and diligently in this class, and struggle though it. Not worth the money or the tears.
I really enjoyed Professor Lockhart's class because he made it pretty easy to understand the material. I would recommend him to anyone who has already completed higher level maths in high school but still have to take the course. The edfinity homework is great practice but his exams are definitely more challenging than the notes or homework.
He isn't that terrible; he's not a tenured prof, he's mostly taught high school so he's not amazing. Be careful of his tests/quizzes. He tends to be "creative" with tests and makes it seem harder than it is, but it's not that hard if you understood the concept. Memorizing how to do the math doesn't help in this class. Note: COVID times.
Poor to Decent teacher. But makes the test harder than it needs to be. Includes trick questions to bring down the average. I thought teachers were supposed to celebrate success. But Lockhart sees good grades and thinks it means its not hard enough.
This was the worst professor I have ever taken. He does not care about his students success and wants them to fail. He makes his tests and work way too hard for no reason. -5000/10 recommend this class. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!! He probably reads these terrible ratings and is proud that students think it is so hard.
Not a good professor at all. When doing hw and you get the wrong answer, it WILL NOT tell you what you did wrong or how to get right answers unless you go to his office hours. Does NOT give out reviews. Makes his tests SUPER HARD. Goes over notes, but does not really explain how he gets the answers nor how the 'formulas' work. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!!!
He is a solid choice if you had a good background in high school. The material was not hard at all as long as you take time and actually try. Lots of people hate his class but as someone who used the resources given it was easy to get an A. Pay attention in class and go to the week in reviews!!!!!
there is not one word to describe how bad he is... i am just gonna leave it at that
Took this class in Fall 2020 during COVID. Lockhart was a really tough grader and took pride in low test averages and sees good grades as the class being "not hard enough." Very exam heavy and has lots of tricks in the exams. Would NOT recommend this class to an incoming freshman.
Hes not that bad. All these reviews are from people who are doing badly in the class, but believe me it is not THAT hard. Hes a solid choice if youre decent at math. You dont have to be the best at it but be willing to study and try. The class is not impossible, I did really well. Dont listen to all these terrible reviews
Avoid this class if you don't have an amazing math background. I personally went to a small high school with not-so-great teachers and my highest level class I took in hs was precal. However, I was always the go-to person people went to for math help in hs. Now I am scared I'm going to fail this class.
He has admitted to deliberately making the exams "tricky". Since he writes his own exams, the homework is not reflective of the material we should know, and we do not practice problems that prepare us well. I would not recommend taking him. I went to office hours and tutoring frequently, and still had a hard time in the class.
Worst professor at TAMU. Will ruin your college career. Do not take him.
All these reviews about Professor Lockhart are really harsh. He really isnt that difficult of a Prof and he explains everything really well when going over it. I personally made a solid B without studying and my peers in the class think hes pretty easy. I will say the tests are tricky and he make it hard on purpose. Honestly a good Prof.
There is a lot of very harsh comments about Professor Lockhart, but most of them are just people who are not doing well deflecting their problems onto the professor. If you ask him questions, he will answer them and fully explain everything. Just do the homework and you'll be fine. Quizzes and tests can be a little hard, but they're manageable.
All of these ratings are unnecessarily harsh. He really is a good professor but you are going to have to put in the work and study if you want to do well. He offers lots of resources to be successful and if you're decent at math you'll do fine. Just make sure you watch the lectures and do the homework and you'll be fine
If you do not have a strong math background, do not take this class. He does not explain how or why he does certain things and the only class notes are problems he does in class. He is very bad at explaining why and people are afraid to ask him questions because he is rude and even when they do they don't get an explanation anyway.
I would personally rather take a shin to the ankle then have this professor again. The class itself is not difficult, but Professor Lockhart goes out of his way to make the class more difficult. I know the reviews are back and forth on this prof, but I hope you take my review into consideration. He is not the man for math 140.
Professor Lockhart is a great professor that explains concepts very well and answers questions thoroughly. The content is not too difficult and you will succeed if you do the work and study. The ratings here are way too harsh and not reflective of how he is as a prof.
Very direct lectures. If you have a good background in math this prof will be just fine, but if you don't he will fly through some things very quickly. Tests are made to be difficult but they are manageable. Overall good prof and not as bad as the reviews make him out to be.
Lockhart taught an easy class, but always managed to throw in a few problems per test that brought my test averages down lower than I would have liked. A very nice guy who was able to explain the concepts we were learning pretty well.
He is very condescending, negative, rude, and not encouraging in any way. His cockiness about the difficult standard of his exams is honestly annoying and not helpful to students in any way. He looks for ways to snatch points away rather than award them for correct thinking. He makes everything more stressful than needed. He needs to be humbled.
do not take this professor if you are not good at math. once you get a bad test grade, you're basically down for the count. its hard to boost up your grade after you bomb one or more of his tests. it was exceptionally hard to maintain my D in the class, so if you're looking for a MATH140 class, dont take his, take someone elses
There is HW for every lesson but with the notes it really isn't hard. You also get a few tries on edfinity and can redo the HW if needed. I was able to do almost all of the HW before the notes were even completed. If you've taken algebra 1 in high school. 4 tests with multiple choice and a few free response and then there is a quiz every Friday.
Lockhart is a decent choice if you're already okay at math. Although he seems to pride himself for making the exams difficult (ew). Class was overall straightforward, homework was very manageable, but his class is extremely exam heavy so if you do badly on any you're in for a run. His final was rude and severely UNEVEN.
Goes through the bare minimum of the notes, not how to actually do the problems. Tricks you up on tests and wants them to be obnoxiously hard, will admit it. Not great at answering questions, makes students feel guilty for asking. Weekly quiz, 2 weekly homeworks of 10-20 qs, and 4 tests including final. Make sure you do office hours/week in review.
I found Professor Lockhart to be a pretty clear teacher. Assignments were very direct and I thought he covered the topics pretty thoroughly. However, I would agree that Lockhart lacks compassion for his students. I was able to do well in the class since I studied and am strong in math but he doesn't go out of his way to help students who need it.
I HAVE NEVER HAD TO STUDY AND TEACH MYSELF SO MUCH IN MY LIFE. HE BARELY WORKS ANY PROBLEMS IN THE NOTES. I HAD TO PAY FOR TUTORING AND DO EVERY SINGLE PRACTICE PROBELM IN THE BOOK TO KNOW WHAT TO DO. EVEN THEN HIS TESTS WERE STILL HARD AND TRICKY. GOODLUCK, I HOPE YOU LIKE TO BE STRESSED AND STUDY! I WOULD RATHER BREAK A BONE THAN TAKE HIS CLASS!
If you're already proficient in math and took higher-level classes in high school, Lockhart's class isn't going to be an issue. He explains everything in the notes as much as is needed. The key is to be on top of the homework and to review his quizzes before taking the tests. He's proud of being a tricky grader but the concepts aren't that tricky.
I was taking a lighter load, so I was able to focus on this class. The class is easily doable, if you start studying EARLY. Work out all practice problems in the textbook, and if you are stumped on some GO TO HIS TUTORIALS. He was nice and understanding when he saw you making an effort. Read exams carefully!
Professor Lockhart was a solid teacher. If you pay attention in class and actually do the problems with him instead of just watching, you should understand all of the concepts. Math 140 is easy math in general, so it is not too bad. Also be sure to stay on top of your homework or it can easily pile up.
Bret Lockhart mightve been the worst teacher Ive ever had in any subject. I passed Calc AB in high school with an A and I got a 780 on the math portion of the SAT but maintaining an A in this class was my greatest math accomplishment of them all. I averaged an A on all of the tests but Bret threw a curveball at us and I got a C on the final.
I signed up for this class hoping to have an easy gpa boost due to my solid background in math. I earned a 5 on the calc BC test and I found his tricky tests to be tougher than that material. He prided himself in knowing that his tests were not easy and that kids were not doing well. His teaching style was barbaric and explained nothing.
My dream was always to attend Texas A&M and I worked extremely hard to be able to attend this prestigious university. My first experience of college level mathematics has ruined math for me as a whole as Bret Lockhart and his lack of ability to teach. His tests had material that not covered during class, office hours or week in reviews.
Horrible teacher, tells his students that they need to do better when his lectures provide little to no structure with learning. Should've stuck to teaching high school. Tests are very difficult and you often have to rely on outside sources. Makes intro to Calculus feel almost impossible for anyone who doesn't have a solid background in Calculus.
Difficult and not very kind
He's a great guy. His lectures are very clear and straight-forward and leave little room for confusion. People who don't like him are mad because they didn't put in enough work and won't take responsibility. Professor Lockhart's class is very easy to follow and the amount of work needed to succeed is obvious. Would recommend him to anyone.
Lectures were just bad.
I really enjoyed his class. It was probably the best math class I've taken in my life. You have to do really well on exams in order to pass the class, however, the Final Exam replaced the lowest exam grade so you always have a chance to do better and get a better grade in the class. I highly recommend Prof. Lockhart!
Professor Lockhart knows his stuff and enjoys teaching Calculus. He does his best to take complex ideas and simplifies them. This class is difficult, but if you put in the effort you will do well. The bad reviews are just a coping mechanism, most of the grievances are with the math department and not the professor.
I took him in the fall and I almost did not make an A, the final saved me. He explains things well in my opinion, but doesn't elaborate well when students asked questions. There are quizzes and HW that are pretty easy for the most part, this class just requires a lot of studying.
Very good at responding in a timely manner. If he can't answer your question in class he will normally answer right away if you email after. Exams are a big portion of the grade and cover lots of material so studying/practicing often is a must. That being said lots of partial credit is available on exams if you show you know what to do.
I genuinely feel like I benefited from Professor Lockhart's lectures, and the structure of his class. Print out all of the notes at the beginning of the semester, and you'll always have something to come back to when studying for tests or quizzes. I was on Zoom, and we had all day to take the quizzes and they were open note. Highly recommend
He sucks. Told us we would cry after every quiz. Quizzes are hard. He teaches too fast and too arrogantly. Dude def has a big ego and thinks that he's the god of math. and that his students should not only worship him but also suffer in his name. During your nsc if you see that you don't have a choice but to take lockhart go ahead and drop ur major
He is rough. Teaches fast, doesn't teach thouroughly. Failing is likely unless you work your heart out.
Has a big ego and teaches like he doesn't like you. Teaches very complicatedly and doesn't give descriptive notes. Will take any chance to fail you even if you show that you understand the concept. Choose any other professor and you should be good to go. He is, however, good at responding to emails.
He sucks, I had thought all math professors were just bad in college because Lockhart's class was my first college math, slept through his class once and went to my friends 151 lecture instead. Oh my god I can not tell you how much better this professor was than Lockhart, Lockhart teaches fast, loose, and angry, do not willingly pick this class.
Typical rule stickler, his teaching style is kind of rough and it seems like he's genuinely trying to teach well but the way he responds to questions asked is kind of demeaning most of the time. Don't know if its an ego thing cuz the dude is nice outside of class but in class he's the "your professors wont let that fly" professor.
DO NOT TAKE! Horrible prof, doesn't want to teach and doesn't care about students. Said we would cry after every quiz, doesn't prepare us for homework, quizzes, or test. Have to come in with full understanding of cal to pass intro to cal. Not worth it. Take someone else if you have the chance. Having to get friends with different profs teach me cal
He was a very good teacher, the class is set up to be test heavy. He gave us hard quizzes but they were a small percent of the grade so they just helped us prepare for the tests. Lectures are posted online super helpful.
Straight to the point, Not as bad as many reviews say, chugs through ALL practice problems and includes ALL steps for notetaking purposes. People don't like him because they get bad grades on the test, but as long as you take many practice test you should get an A no matter the teacher in math 151.
Honestly, probably not the best 151 prof, but his lectures are pretty good and he answers questions pretty well. He does make the quizzes unusually tough, but they're pretty similar to the questions in the notes, so look over those beforehand. If you've taken calc. in high school you should easily get an A.
Im writing again. I dont recommend this professor or even the class at all if you dont have to take it (non-engr majors). The coding part is irrelevant to learn and the quizzes are way harder and not helpful at all with learning at all. The homeworks are hard af and take SOOO Long. The class overall is hard if you suck at math. GET A TUTOR !!!!!!!!
My first-year experience as an Aggie could have been better had I simply gotten a different math professor. Quizzes were hard, but we had one of the best TA's so that was the only good thing that came from that class.
Professor Lockhart is cool. Just show up to lectures and follow along with him as he writes on the slides (which are posted on Canvas). He's also hard against cheaters.
The angry reviews you see must be from people took exception to the class itself. Lockhart provides very clear notes and has a good lecture. He takes time to help students understand topics. He gives no more or less homework than anyone else for Math 151. He's engaging, personable, and accessible. You don't need to avoid this professor.
He is the best professor I can think of. He is very fair in his teaching and if you want to challenge yourself I would choose him as a professor.
Honestly, Idk why Lockhart is so lowly rated. He is not that bad of a teacher and I only showed up half the time to class. Having previous calculus knowledge really does help though and maybe that's why I found the class to be not too difficult. If you do miss class, just rewatch on zoom and study with past common exams. You'll be fine!
I really don't understand the bad reviews for Lockhart. I haven't been to class in 3 weeks and I still have an easy A. Hard quizzes, but only worth 5% of your grade so it really doesn't matter what you get on them. His lectures are very straightforward and give you great notes for exams, hw, and quizzes. He posts all notes and lectures online.
Lockhart teaches fine, he solves problem fast but he has a demeaning attitude when answering questions. He's unapproachable and doesn't have a great personality. He's told us many times "You will cry after this". If you take him, you can get by but it could hit your gpa hard and its not worth it for ETAM.
I think a lot of people are much too critical of Lockhart. He isnt a great prof to take if youve never learned any calculus, but he is willing to answer questions and cares about students. Tests are pretty simple if you study old exams and actually put in effort. Most of the bad reviews are probably people who were too lazy to work for an A.
I'm honestly not sure why Lockhart is so low in these. His lectures, while not the most entertaining, teach the material well, and will help you better understand with little tips and tricks he adds in. He also records every lecture and puts it online, so you can watch them even if you cant go to class. He definitely was one of my better profs.
Was NOT a fan of Bret. Said at the beginning of the semester that his goal was to make us cry during quizzes, &just overall spoke a lot about how he wasn't able to care about individual students. It just felt like his lectures were really general & then exams would be from very specific instances we were supposed to learn from old exams & our TAs.
Any person that says he isn't a great professor was too lazy to put in the work. He was very helpful during office hours and his lectures were very helpful. The class as a whole is very test and homework heavy, you will get that with any professor. He made sure that you knew of the resources available to you and I would def recommend him.
Not the most enjoyable lectures, but material is communicated well and frequently makes time for questions. Quizzes are hard, but they're only 5% of your grade (and are not as bad as other reviews indicate). I did have prior calculus experience, though. Tests and HW are common to all professors. Lectures were recorded, so attendance is optional.
Bret is a G. He explains the material well and at a good pace. If you want to do well, just pay attention to the lectures and ask questions if you're unsure. The bad ratings he got are from people who sit in the back and use their phones the whole time. He has a zoom and records lectures so you do not have to attend in person.
Not too sure why ratings are so low for him, at the beginning of the year he tried to scare us by saying the quizzes and first test were going to be insanely difficult, but this was really not the case at all. I thought all of his lectures were clear and concise, and the homework was not bad.
Lockhart is a solid teacher very straight to the point. His attitude could come off as rude. I could see myself struggling if I didnt have previous calc knowledge. Class is extremely well structured if you follow notes and do common exams its very straight forward. He does give hard quizzes and does try to scare you at times.
While the course isn't super easy if you aren't solid in math, the homework does a good job of preparing you for quizzes and past exams are very easy to access. The tests are worth most of your grade so if you do a couple of practice exams before each test, they are really straight forward. Just put in the time before each test and you'll do well.
Hes honestly a good professor. Yes hes tough and sometimes a little too straightforward but he really does care about students, I respect him and will take him again for 152, got a 69.43 in his class which is a C but thats my own fault. Just make sure you go to class for 151 if youre base is weak in calc 1 already.
Lockhart is a solid choice if you've taken calculus before. A lot of people complain that he goes too fast, but the truth is he goes at the pace required for the amount of material. He explains things clearly, gives plenty of outside resources, and gives plenty of grades. Weekly quizzes, labs, homework, and four exams.
He wasn't the worst to have for calc, he did make his quizzes difficult so we would study, luckily they were worth a very small percentage of our total grade. He did have some of the highest averages on the common exams so if you put in the time you will do well on exams. The only thing is that he was a very negative dude and tried to scare us 24/7
151 is common exams so the prof will not matter for tests. Quizzes once a week and are tough but only worth a fraction of final grade. He is really good at explaining problems and answering questions. Definitely recommend attending lectures. Does a review day in class before every test where you can ask specific questions. Homework every week.
Boring lectures so I self taught a lot of it. Quizzes are hard but barely affect your grade. The common exams are basically the only things that matter for your grade so study a lot for those. It was nice if one of your tests was a lower grade than you final, the grade on your final would replace it. Ok class but would not take again
This is from my personal standpoint. Don't get me wrong, he is very smart and willing to work with people. But if you have never taken Calculus before, don't try it. You will have to do waaay more studying. He has high expectations, and goes deep in lectures. Again if you never took Calculus before, don't take his class. If you have, go for it.
lockhart wastes no time in class during lectures, regularly points out what should be worked on and what will be on the quizzes or tests, and albeit his quizzes are hard but give you a good range of how well you are doing in terms of comprehension. The only reason you would fail his class is simply not willing to study efficiently, ITS CALC people
He's not the worst Professor, but he's also not perfect. He does have very good lecture and tells you what are on your quizzes and exams. It's just his expectations are high in the class. For those who have not taken Calculus before, I strongly advise you study and not slack off. Otherwise, you will end up having to drop his class or take the fail.
He is the best prof - love him so much. He is scary at first, but he is excellent at teaching Calc1 and is really passionate about his students.
He is a good fair prof. Taking him for MATH152 now.
Very efficient and well organized. Lectures go hard. Chats with students before lectures. Provides great resources. Exams weigh heavily, and he does his best to ensure student success. His communications about expectations, assignments, grading were very clear, and I didn't ever feel like I was asking a 'stupid' question in his hall. He cares!
Professor Lockhart is a very solid lecturer and the printable notes are excellent. If you have never taken Calculus before, this class may be difficult but it is still very doable. He is very clear about what will be on the exams and quizzes if you just pay attention.
Dr. Lockhart was super organized, told us in a very straightforward manner what was expected of us. Quizzes were made very difficult to prepare us for the somewhat less difficult tests. Kinda strict with tests because cheating, but it was still ok. Sent clear instructions on what to do, but he emphasizes graphs which kinda sucked for me personally.
Lockhart doesn't play when it comes to work and especially when someone cheats. Please try to pay attention and attend week in reviews and do old common exams. He doesn't explain to the extent that the quizzes or exams do so beware, so try self teaching yourself. He only shows sympathy if your dedicated to math. So don't play around.
Bret isn't the worst Professor on Campus. I believe there is a lot he can do to better shape his class. I feel as though his expectations for everyone are set high. I've taken Calc before so the class wasn't as difficult for me, but I can only imagine for those who never took Calc previously before coming here.
Lockhart explains things very clearly. I never felt confused during any of his lectures, even when the material was challenging. He is very easy to access outside of class. Yes, he does make the quizzes hard, but in turn, they serve as great practice for the common exams, which matter so much more than the quizzes. A very good math teacher.
Math 151 is not an easy class, with 3 common exams and a final, most of your grade is determined by exams. That being said, Lockhart isn't as bad as everyone says he is, he has 3 office hours per week and is always there for them. He goes through lectures and problems faster than normal, but if you ask him questions he will answer them thoroughly.
I took 8am's two semesters in a row to have him for math 151 and 152 because he's so amazing. He teaches difficult topics in understandable ways and gives tips and tricks on what to memorize and how to think about problems. His quizzes are hard-ish but good prep for what you'll see on exams. Really caring guy, wants to help you do well. 11/10
I took Lockhart for 151, didn't like him at all. I took 152 with Onica, had to drop it, now I'm taking it again with Lockhart and I really like him. He is extremely to-the-point. Math 152 is a very difficult class, I doubt anyone could teach it better then Lockhart aside from JD Kim.
Had him for math 152. Good teacher and explains well in class. He provides all the necessary resources you need to understand the material. The quizzes can be difficult but are a minor part of your grade. He is understanding and fair when it comes to grading disputes or unfair point deduction by a TA. I would definitely recommend him.
I had him for 152. His quizzes are really not as bad as everybody makes them seem. He just takes the hardest or most confusing parts of a lecture and puts them in the quiz, nothing really surprising. Lockhart posts all of his recorded lectures after class which is nice if you miss a lecture.
Lockhart was a fantastic professor. His lectures were extremely clear. If you ask a question he answers it completely. I would recommend him highly for MATH 151 and MATH 152.
he's a really good prof, but you gotta keep up with him especially in lectures and not zone out (print the notes and take them!) he's good at explaining things conceptually sometimes we gotta ask tho
I had professor Lockhart during his first-ever semester teaching MATH 152. I never would have guessed it was his first-time, wish I'd had him for 151. He's great professor and is very helpful with questions in or out of class. Hard quizzes but aren't worth much. He's super funny and brutally honest so be prepared. 10/10 would take again.
After reading reviews for Lockhart, I was uncertain about signing up for his section but I had no choice because it was the only one left. Surprisingly, he's not as bad as some reviews made him out to be, maybe because I've only had him for 152. His lectures are mostly understandable and the quizzes and labs are pretty easy to understand.
horrible
Honestly a really chill professor. I took him for both Math 151 and 152 and pretty easily got an A both times, he's really good at knowing where his students are at and adjusting. He does move fast in lecture sometimes, but posts completed notes and a recording of the lecture. Quizes are a little hard, but nothing that he doesn't go over in class.
Such an amazing professor! He explains difficult topics in a way that is easy to understand. Tests have problems comparable to the notes. Quizzes are harder but are worth 5% of the total grade so doing bad on a few doesn't hurt too much. The labs are annoying but overall fairly straight forward. Overall 10/10 would recommend.
I had Professor Lockhart for 151 and liked him so much I took him again for 152. He is very to the point and does occasionally go a little fast, but he records the lectures so you can go back and watch them if you miss anything. He writes out everything he's saying and gives lots of little tips and tricks that are very helpful. Would def recommend.
I think he's good and nice, lectures online, cengage hw, notes online, I've only had him but i think he's great. He will teach the entire time but you can skip bc the lectures are online.
I had prof Lockhart for 151 and152. There are weekly quizzes that he tries to make pretty challenging to prepare for exams but it's nothing to be too worried about. He recorded and posted all lectures so it won't be the end of the world if you miss class. He's very strict about cheating, which is kind of annoying because he talks about it so much.
Really great dude. I completely clutched the A because of the final which replaces your lowest exam grade. He also did some type of homework grading curve I don't understand. Also dropped our lowest quiz grade. He wasn't especially great at lectures, but he uploaded them to zoom and stayed on schedule. If you get him you'll be fine.
I took 151/152 with Professor Lockhart. His lectures were straightforward and fairly fast-paced, but he always stick to the lecture schedule. There are weekly quizzes but nothing he didn't teach. He is strict with final grades but replaces an exam with the final. There is a lot of content to learn but he does a good job of getting the ideas across.
Awesome math prof! I heard Calc 2 was a weed out class, but the way he taught made things make sense! The exams are not too bad if you look at past exams, and his notes outline every weird question they could throw at you.
Don't listen to other reviews hating on Lockhart, he's a great professor. All 3 common exams were easy/fair. As long as you do multiple past common exams before each exam you're essentilaly guaranteed a B+. Lockart explains concepts very well and makes sure everyone understands before continuing. quizzes are very doable and only make up 5% of grade
Dr. Lockhart was a great professor I had him for Calc I II. He may be a little boring, but his notes are straight to the point and thorough. His lectures were not mandatory, but I encourage you to watch them since he posts them on canvas. To get an A in this class, just do multiple common exams until you can do the questions in your head.
The class is a hard class in general, the prof can't do anything about that. I had him for 151 and intentionally chose him for 152. Amazing prof. Very patient. He cares a lot for his students. Take him if you can. The others are just salty that it was a hard class. It's a weed out so, no choice. I love Lockhart, def made it easier to learn.
Professor Lockhart was absolutely great to me last semester. He covered things in depth and was super suggestive and willing to work and help make his students lives' easier. Now no cheating!! You can get through this class handily if you pay attention. He was easy to message outside of class and as for in class, always ready to answer questions.
Lockhart was a great professor. He's very organized in how he lectures, solves problems, and even the way his canvas page was set up. His recorded lectures were helpful when I was doing homework and studying. His quizzes were hard, but they pushed me to study more. Do the homework thoroughly and take lots of practice exams and you will be fine.
His class is only difficult if you don't already know Calc, slack off, cheat, and don't study. He doesn't give easy grades. Quizzes can be difficult and he doesn't give extra credit. Study old common exams and do the week in reviews. He doesn't give extra credit so every grade counts. For those who already know Calc, the class should be easier.
I had him for both 151 and 152. He's well organized and the notes are easy to follow. The quizzes can be tough, but he makes them that way so we study hard for the exam, which will be easier than his quizzes, so it rly pays off. Also, the exams are common so practice old ones and you'll be fine. He cares a lot so ask for help if you need it.
I took him during the summer semester and I won't do it again. His exams were unnecessarily difficult if it is your first time seeing cal 1. Basically half of our class dropped. I had to study 12 hours a day for two wks straight at the end to be able to clutch a B. He does respond to all questions and is v organized, though. Good personality.
Bad reviews because he doesn't stand for cheating. But he is an amazing professor who will prep you for the quizzes and tests. Lots of practice problems in class with clear explanations, made cal 2 easy.
He is a tough grader and very strict. That applies to nomenclature, grading policy, code of honor... Quizzes are difficult but are worth only a very small portion of the grade, and his method of teaching is one of the best I've seen. He is very good at explaining concepts. I feel he genuinely cares about people learning. See annex for grades.
Honestly, I've taken Lockhart for a couple of months so far, so my opinion might change later on, but these reviews are very wrong. The quizzes which he assigns are not very hard. He posts lecture notes and videos online, and the WebAssign is pretty much the quiz. Just figure out the why and how to every problem and an A is very achievable.
Professor Lockhart is a great guy and professor. If you haven't taken a calculus class before he might be more difficult but he is very easy to follow. Exams are very similar to the past common exams that are posted online so be sure to study those. Homework is not very stressful. Overall a good professor, I don't understand the bad reviews.
I honestly really like Professor Lockhart. I do think his quizzes are unnecessary as they don't really prepare you for the test but his logic behind it makes sense. He wants you reviewing weekly so the tests aren't as hard which was true. His lectures were straightforward and good. Common exams are your best friend!
I had 8 am class with Professor Lockhart and he is always energetic and ready to teach! He is a great teacher and gives us many different ways to memorize functions and it helps out a lot. The quizzes are difficult but its only to set you up for the test and he is always accessible during his office hours.
He expects you to know a lot of the material but is really good at teaching. He goes at a good pace and records his lectures. Most of the quizzes weren't horrible as long as you really understand every problem on the homework and notes. He suggests timelines to study which are really helpful if you follow them. Do a ton of practice exams.
Great lectures, the quizzes people freak out over aren't really bad at all, overall made 151 really easy
Really good professor, clearly cares about what he does. My only concern would be if you've never taken calc before.
Professor Lockhart does an excellent job walking through the various examples introduced throughout the course. Very often when something in the course material is presented in a confusing way, he has a simpler explanation that works just as well. His quizzes are hard, but not impossible, and do well to prepare you for exams.
Lockhart was very clear in lectures. He told us what problems mattered most. He gave us all the tools we needed to succeed.
Lockhart cared about his students. He loves getting to know his students. He is a great teacher, and incredibly merciful. There was a cheating scandal at the beginning of the year that he handled incredibly well. His quizzes are rather hard, but that is for your own benefit! Take this professor if you have the chance.
He is great if you have learned some or a lot of calculus in the past, but not so good if you have not learned calculus in the past. If you have already taken calculus before, he's the best teacher for a recap.
A wonderful teacher that gives you straightforward information and his lectures are easy to follow and to the point. He knows what he's teaching and is good at explaining how to solve each problem, 10/10 would recommend taking his classes.
an incredible prof who really cares about his students' learning! def recommend him for 151. he's got VERY good lectures, i didnt even need to use youtube to learn anything, he was that good. use previous years' common exams to ace the exams. extremely well organized and very good notes. my bf who had another prof came to his class instead
Professor Lockhart is an amazing professor. He explains lectures really well, and he is accessible outside of class. He also uploads his lectures on canvas, which is really helpful when studying. I would say if it's your first time taking calculus study more than 3-4 common exams before your exam and make sure you know how to do each question.
Lockhart is a great professor. His notes are easy to read and understand. His lectures are top notch even though there are times he goes fast. The common exams are not too bad if you study since there are practice common exams. The quizzes can be hard at times but they only take 5% of your grade. Overall, a great teacher to have.
Professor Lockhart's lectures are very straightforward with several examples. He uploads all his lectures to Canvas so attendance isn't mandatory. Quizzes once a week are purposely difficult to prepare for exams. Previous common exams are posted and a great resource to study as tests are very similar. Tough class but a good grade is manageable.
Lectures will be him working out problems then answering questions. He also records lectures so you can watch them later. If you never took calculus before, this class will probably be difficult. His quizzes are somewhat difficult and they force you to work through the problems in a short amount of time. He drops some grades too and final was fine.
He records all lectures!!! I loved this because I had 8ams and I was still able to watch lectures later and succeed in the class. He is direct and shows you how to do all problems with our notes packet. I like when teachers demonstrate questions and exams are not hard if you understand all the notes. Quizzes are difficult and happen every week.
He is very knowledgeable and definitely a must-take. He really cares about his students. He likes soccer and tells us about his son's soccer league. Weekly quizzes are hard without practice, but count for only 5% and really improve your skills. If you are struggling go to the math help sessions or ask him questions. Homework usually isn't that bad.
im gonna say things i havent already seen here -seems mean but v caring. genuinely passionate about teaching -scares u to make u work harder. in the end its not that bad -very generous drops and ec at the end of the sem -answers questions patiently -best organization ive ever seen! notes+lectures posted if you study common exams, youll get an A!
Lockhart is a great professor. His notes are easy to read and understand. His lectures are top notch even though there are times he goes fast. The common exams are not too bad if you study since there are practice common exams. The quizzes can be hard at times but they only take 5% of your grade.
Super organized, posts all notes and lectures immediately after class. I didn't go to most of his classes and just watched the lectures later on my own time. Homework is online through Cengage, quizzes can be challenging but its often a variation of the hard examples he does during the lecture, quizzes are also only 5% of your grade so no worries.
The tests are the main part of this class, so be sure to do the common exams. The quizzes are only worth 5% and they're not particularly hard, just requires effort. His final was much like the common exams that were administered. Do old common exams. I liked his lectures but I rarely went to class and still got an A.
Lockhart was an incredible math 151 prof. His lectures are extremely helpful and easy to follow. Homework only once a week and a weekly quiz. The quiz is not hard as long as you've been paying attention in lecture and did the homework. Overall, easy course and as long as you study and do the common exams the tests are very easy.
Great professor with great passion to teach his students. I took my 151 with him, and it was a great experience. Definitely would recommend someone take math 151 with him.
disregard 5/5. he pays to remove bad comments from ratemyprofessor, he seems to want his students to struggle in his class, impossible to respect
The only way to get a A in this class is to have taken calculus in high school. Very tough grader and will not round up your grade.
Tough quizzes, lots of hw, but he makes calculus easy to understand as long as you put in work outside of class.
Good and clear notes, you go over concepts before quizzes so that was helpful.
I took Dr. Lockhart for 151 and 152, and he is a really great professor. Lectures are easy to understand, exams are not too difficult, and the homework load is not that big. The weekly quizzes are very hard, but they are only worth 5% of your grade and they definitely help you prepare for the exams. Overall, you should definitely take him.
Great lectures that really help you understand the material.
Lockhart is great! I took him for 151 and 152, both follow similar grade structure. He records all his lectures and uses a note template, has great lectures which makes learning the material easier. His quizzes can be hard, but they hardly weigh anything, and force you to study the material as you learn it each week. This makes exams easier!
Took him for 151, and loved him so much I took him again for 152. His quizzes are tough but really helpful in preparing for exams. Hes got a sort of tough love vibe about him, but overall would take him again.
Professor Lockhart is very knowledgeable in this subject and has good in-depth lectures! I would take him if at all possible because I think he is one of the best for this class! The weekly quizzes are difficult but will prepare you for the difficulty of the exams.
Good lecturer, begins with the basics and builds up to the more difficult questions. The math department made the tests more difficult this semester, but he tried to teach us what we needed to know to excel. Was fair in grading and provided us with what we needed to know to answer every question. Fair grader and test writer, wanted us to succeed.
Really good at teaching the material. Sometimes can go a little fast but he records and posts his lectures so you can watch them at home and pause when needed. Good guy, and will interact with you about things that aren't math-related.
I had Lockhart for 151 and 152. I chose Prof Lockhart again because his lectures are detailed and contain helpful tips for weird things that could potentially show up on exams. If he says something is important star it in your notes. Additionally he posts lectures online which allowed me to take notes on my own time and sleep in. Study for quizzes!
Honestly, he's one of the better math professors I've had. I was behind from a bad experience the semester prior with a different professor, and had to retake math 152. I wish I had taken his 151 and also his 152 the first time around.. His lectures are basically just working out problems, which he does a great job at. Overall, he's great and cares
Great professor I took him for 151/152. His quizzes were kinda hard but he drops some at the end of the semester. His lectures are easy to follow and he is easy to understand. Definitely would be my #1 choice for calc if I had to take it again, I just wish he taught calc 3 so i could still have him.
Great prof, just remember that everything that he does will set you up for success which includes his pretty difficult quizzes so make sure to study those every week and attend lecture.
Lockhart is stubborn and likes things done his way, but is an incredible professor and will prepare you very well. Only math prof I know who posts recorded lectures, which is really nice bc if I was sick / over slept / he went too fast in class, I could go back and watch the recording and take notes at my own pace. His quizzes are notoriously hard.
Lockhart was a great professor, his notes are good enough to prepare you for the exams and his quizzes aren't terribly hard. The department decided to make the math courses harder, so the difficulty can't be attributed towards the professor. Go to class, pay attention, and if you understand the material well enough, you'll do fine.
His class was very hard but he's a very good lecturer. Highly recommend.
VERY good at teaching. Attend 100% of his lectures, take notes ACTIVELY, review your notes at the end of each week (be consistent about this), finish all homework a few days early & do all practice common exams before each exam. An A will be an absolute no-brainer. Finals are very hard so study thoroughly for it.
I had Professor Lockhart for MATH 151 and 152, and he's the best math teacher I've ever had! He does many example problems in lecture, and if you take good notes and study them, the exams are pretty easy. I highly recommend him!
Lockhart is great at teaching. Always attend lectures and take notes. His quizzes are always difficult but it makes the exams feel easy, and he drops some at the end of the term. He is very strict but in the best way possible.
Effective teacher with decent lectures and an abundance of material provided prior to sections. can be a little callous at times but all things considered he's pretty approachable. Do not underestimate tests, and if he says something is a good idea, do it ASAP. Great person to talk to and gives decent feedback and good for pointers when stuck.
Just no
Lockhart is a wonderful teacher! You can tell that he enjoys what he does. Make sure you have a good grasp of how Canvas works before his class - most if not all of your work will be found there. Make sure you go to class and take as many notes as you can, and make sure you stay on top of homework.
Lockhart is very strict, no excuses in his class and this can translate as he doesn't care about your learning/student experience. Utitlize his class groupme, zoom recordings and practice exams. Attendance not mandatory. Studying is very necessary as his exams are rough, usually a step above HW's and quizzes.
Excellent professor, explains math in a way I've never had a teacher do before. Definitely a big nerd, you can tell he loves what he teaches. Be prepared for homework with webassign, video notes, and weekly group quizzes every week. The class is very manageable if you stay on top of things and go to class. Can be a bit blunt sometimes.
Lockhart was a really great professor who truly cared about his students and the grades they received. He would try his utmost hardest to make sure that everyone understood the material. He is very energetic and loves talking about his kids. I 100% would take him again and am taking him again for another math class. He is not for everyone though.
Lockhart is a caring professor he might come off a little strange to some but he is one of the best math teachers I have had. Go to every class and do not miss any because you will fully understand what he is teaching if you are there. Has quizzes on Fridays but are take home and relatively easy just work with friends.
I had already seen pretty much all the content we had in highschool already, but Professor Lockhart had some new techniques that he showed us that were really helpful. He's a good lecturer, easy-going guy, and despite me having this class at 8am 3 times a week I never minded going. Great teacher!
If you go to class you'll be fine. He gives weekly group quizzes that are super easy, while other Math 140 professors give individual quizzes that are more difficult. He is so good at explaining things and is easy to follow. I think he's the best math 140 professor by far!
He has to teach based on the guidance of the math dept., who is satisfied with C/D average test scores and aims for them to not be high. No extra credit, just do well on the first exams and study hard. We got a curveball of a 3rd exam, rly unfair, and simply to satisfy the math dept. who must approve everything taught. Most prof will be the same...
Great professor, challenging class. Quizzes could be done in groups & were due midnight. He records all of the lessons and posts the completed notes. He wants you to do well in his class and it shows by the number of resources he provides. Tests are hard but go to the math center and study ahead of time and you will get an A.
Class: Tough, time consuming. Multiple HW's + a quiz due every week. All exams are really hard, math dept has it out for freshmen and tests way harder than what is on HWs + quizzes so beware. Professor: OK. Very organized and offers lots of resources. His attitude is off putting but he's just strict and concise on what he wants/needs.
He's aware that he purposely make the tests tough. According to the "math dept" our class avg cannot be "too high". He complained that we did too well, or above the other profs sections on exam 2 so he made exam 3 extremely hard. His lectures are important and it's crucial to get on top of this class because there is so much content.
The tests were hard, especially the free response questions. They were a little more difficult than the notes and homework, but if you go to class and get the basic concepts, you can apply them well. Find a group to do homework and quizzes with. He wasn't the most approachable but did his best to help. Utilize the math learning center resources!
Pretty mid. I stopped going to class halfway through the semester because it wasn't helpful to me. I don't recommend this unless you're good at math. Exams were difficult but fair. My biggest complaint is that Professor Lockhart was not approachable; I am sure he cares for his students, but the few times I interacted with him, it was not evident.
Professor Lockhart is hands down one of the best professors for Calc 2. His lectures are very easy to follow and he cares a lot about his students (he was even willing to write me a LOR). The final was pretty easy, especially for a notoriously difficult class.
Professor Lockhart really knows and understands the material that he teaches. He doesn't rely on the textbook, but communicates the material in a way that makes it easy to understand. He also posts every lecture. i-Clicker once a week, typically on Friday so you can plan around it. Study and understand his quizzes and you will do well on the test.
I am horrendous at math, it's not his fault I made a C. He's about as good of a math professor as you can get. His lectures are recorded if you don't feel like going, but he has quizzes every Friday that you can work in groups to complete so i'd recommend going. Don't procrastinate on the homework, it takes longer than you think it would.
Professor Lockhart made the units incredibly more difficult than they needed to be and if you can avoid having him as a Math 140 professor, do so at all costs. He expects you to know upper level calculus and does not want to help at all. He is too smart to be teaching an entry level math course. He does not care about your grade at all.
FRESHMEN STAY AWAY! Horrible professor, too much homework, 4 difficult Tests with no wiggle room for mess up. He was bullied by the math department all semester; and never took up for the students; the last 2 tests were difficult on purpose to tank the class average! Horrible Grading system, you never know what your actual grade is till the end.
Lockhart made the class easier than other professors and communicated when things would be graded by. He posts the lectures online and the weekly quizzes are easy.
Where do I even start.... Do not take him I promise you it is for the greater good. YOU WILL MOST LIKELY FAIL THE FIRST EXAM IF YOU HAVE NEVER TAKEN CALC. He is a really tough grader, and isn't approachable or much help when it comes to studying for tests or doing homework.
Professor Lockhart will not curve, but he is the best mathematics lecturer I've had from 151, 152, 253, and 308. He makes concepts easy to understand and he recorded and posted lectures so we could watch them as many times as we needed.
He does NOT curve the class. He leads you to believe there will be a curve in the end. Exam 3 is the worst! Then you have to take the final and you will fail. You will spend all your money on tutor john and still fail his test because he doesn't use numbers, he uses letters. DO NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE!!! class average was failing.
Professor Lockhart makes this class way harder than it has to be. He makes the tests insanely hard, teaches really fast, and does not explain things very well. If you have the option to take this class with a different professor, then do it.
Teaches at a substandard. For a math 140 class, he made tests much harder than they needed to be. There are so many other professors you can take and research into so for your sanity do not take this professor.
Not a good professor. Averages on the tests are in the 50-60 range, and he does not curve at all.
do not take!! goes over material very quickly, and homework is nothing like lectures. claimed he made his tests "easy" when the class average was in the 50s. all exams had failing averages. also does not curve at all. he made this class much more difficult than it needed to be, and offered little to no help, went to office hours and that did nothing
Terrible professor. Would not recommend to anybody.
He expects you to already know calc before the class even starts. He does not explain anything and makes his own exams. He also teaches way too fast and makes you feel stupid if you ask any questions. He thinks his exams are easy but class averages are no better than a 55. I would not recommend
I took Professor Lockhart for Math 140 and 142 and absolutely LOVED him. I would say that the material is hard if you are not a math person, but Lockhart is good at explaining topics in lectures and gives you everything you need to be successful on each test. He also posts lectures on Zoom so going to class is optional unless there is a quiz.
Only take this professor if you feel that you are pretty decent at Math/algebra, his exams are not very forgiving. Not very leniant on late assignments, and is very strict on the honor code. Made the 3rd exam 10x harder than the previous exams because our section "did too well on them". Led to a failing grade average for the exam.
Professor Lockhart was the best calculus teacher. He really cares about his students and wants you to succeed. He does weekly quizzes but they really help to prepare you for the exam, and he doesn't try to trick you. He usually drops a few grades at the end. I am not a math person but his lecture's were good and helpful! Take him for 142!
Professor Lockhart was a good professor, he cared about his students and wanted to see them succeed. That said, he goes through the notes and lecture material fast at times, his exams can be difficult, and he will not curve. However, I am not very good at math and had no prior knowledge of calculus, and was still able to do alright in the class.
I am terrible at math. I'm not a math lover by any means, but Professor Lockhart is great at teaching. I think he should be in charge of the math department because he understands the students. He wants to know his students and is funny too. He does group quizzes and can be pretty funny too.
Some of his exams are a little rough, but you can make up those points through his collaborative and open-note iClickers and quizzes. He really loves his job and is passionate about teaching calculus, and he's just a really nice person in general. I highly recommend taking his class :)
Calculus is a difficult course but Lockhart explains each concept well. Time was an issue on exams at times. If you study hard you should be ok! Study the notes and the quizzes gives you. He really wants you to succeed and anybody who wrote a horrible review is just bad at math and it has nothing to do with his teaching abilities.
Overall this class was decent and organized. Lots of webassigns but they didn't take too long. Lectures are recorded so attendance isn't required. Tests were difficult sometimes and he would blame students for the low test averages instead of reflecting on the tests themselves.
He is definitely not fair. Exam times are super short max 30 min except the finals.
If you pay attention to the lecture and study the minimum amount, it is easy to get a B. The professor gives a lot of information about the content of the exams at least a week before you take them. Professor Lockhart doesn't curve but makes hard concepts very easy to understand.
Professor Lockhart is great at teaching calculus. While the exams can be challenging, his lectures, quizzes, and care for student success make the class manageable. Unstuck study AI was a helpful study tool alongside the class resources.
Pretty easy class if you have some basic knowledge of algebra and pre calculus. Studied the test review the night prior to each exam and ended up getting an A. Attendance is semi-mandatory. He will do quizzes and i-clicker occasionally (typically once a week) so as long as you don't miss that you're chilling. Lectures get a bit boring but whatevs.
Prof Lockhart acts like he's too good for his students. He treats first-semester freshmen like juniors or seniors who know all there is to know about the class and barely explains content, only practice problems. Not only that, but he does them extremely fast so if you're taking notes in a notebook, you may as well give up.
Professor Lockhart is pretty good at explaining concepts, and this course isn't too difficult if you have a good knowledge of Algebra 2 and PreCalculus. Group quizzes are helpful, WebAssigns are annoying but not difficult with multiple attempts. My only issue was that he made tests harder than they needed to be.
He's a really good teacher, some of yall just don't do whats expected and complain. He explains everything very clearly and is super helpful if you ask questions.
Math 140 is basically an algebra/pre-calculus review, so if you were good with those in high school, you will do fine. Professor Lockhart goes through the material quickly, but throughout his lectures he will ask for questions. Attendance is not mandatory, however there are iClicker questions and quizzes during class.
Tbh I actually really like prof Lockhart. Math 140 itself was not super difficult for me, but he explains everything and I thought he was a good prof. Tests are harder than they should be, but if you have basic knowledge of concepts you'll do decent. Lots of out of class homework though, but thats the class itself not prof.
I don't know why Bret gets hate; he comes in clutch when you need him. He explained things very clearly and taught in methods that would help you remember things for the exam, plus I loved his nerdy anecdotes and jokes. He doesn't tell you this in the beginning but he drops two iclickers, quizzes, video quizzes.
I was scared to take Math 140 because I am not a math person. But this class was not hard if you pay attention. You should do the homework but it's not that hard. His quizzes are all open notes, peers, and TAs so it is easy to make a good grade. Professor Lockhart is a great guy and teaches very well I would tell anyone to take him.
If you have a decent background in math, TAKE LOCKHART! He does go fast, but he is a great professor. His tests are not any harder than what the homework and quizzes prepare you for. He sends out lots of resources and makes an effort to be accessible. Don't let people scare you out of his class; if you do your work, you will succeed.
Prof. Lockhart was great. I'm not a math person, but he taught well and makes it possible to do well especially if you took pre-cal in high school. Lots of outside sources he provides for help. I overslept the entire class once and he let me follow him to his office hours and take the in-class quiz there.
Many people disliked Prof Lockhart, but I like & respect him. He's honest & straightforward, which can seem blunt/rude, but I appreciated it. After teaching in high school & college for so long he understands our thought processes & fully explains the 'why' behind concepts. He also provides new/different approaches. Just listen, try & put in effort
Very passionate professor who loves teaching, and knows a good amount of higher level math! This class was difficult for me tho since I didn't take precal or cal in HS, so it put me very behind. His teaching style is very fast and if you don't know calc before, it is very hard to catch up. Exam 3 was a killer w/failing average. Final sucked most.
He is just hard to work with.
Lockhart is clear and informative and I can tell he genuinely cares about his students. He deserves a better ranking on this page. He makes everything easy to understand and I enjoyed his personality as well. Stay on top of your work + come to class and you will be successful! Be smart when studying and you can guess what will be on the exams.
Lockhart is great. He teaches everything really well and stops to make sure everyone understands. deadlines are strict but he will drop the lowest two grades in each category. textbook is super easy to follow and hw isn't too long. Tests really aren't too hard. if you took Calc AB in HS you are gonna be fine class is sooo easy knowing clac.
This professor makes the concepts clear and straightforward to understand, so pay attention during the lectures and do lots of practice problems. He is genuinely a good professor, but just make sure to put effort in too! It's just a matter of knowing what you have to do and staying on top of everything.
Lockhart is a super nice guy, definitely cares about student success, but he goes over a lot of topics assuming you already know it. Overall, not a bad class, especially if you took AP Calc in high school. Class content really isn't hard at all, but I found the exams to be harder than what was gone over in lecture.
Class is easy, materials are easy...if you already knew it. If you don't, don't expect to really understand what is going on and be prepared to study a bit. If you knew the stuff coming in, you don't need to study at all. The prof does a POOR job of teaching and does not help students understand, but rather just to do problems, which doesn't help.
Although he is a professor, he does not like when questions are asked during lectures, and would often make students feel discouraged for not understanding the material. The exams were always extremely difficult, and he was not good at helping students prepare for them. TA's were also no help either.
Not a good professor, doesn't really teach things and excepts you to already know them.
Any problems people have with Prof. Lockhart, they really have with the math department. Nazi Germany gave more freedom to its people than what the TAMU math department gives to its professors. Lockhart is a chiller. I had never taken a lick of calculus, and I've been able to keep up. Just actually do the homework, you will learn a lot that way.
Very fast paced and hard material but super straightforward guy. He will be honest about where he expects you to be at and when. 2 Webassigns a week and a couple video quizzes but totally manageable. Exams are hard but nothing that is not covered in homework, quizzes, and lectures. Quizzes are open note and he will help you if you ask. Great prof!
Very good Professor who is easy to understand and is reasonable with his work. I would recommend him!
Lockhart is a great professor, explains concepts well, and is helpful when he can be. Math department doesn't allow much flexibility so this makes him seem harsher than he is. His exams are hard, but that is expected. Getting a C in the class because of dumb mistakes on exams and am I'm not great at math. Put the work in and you'll be fine.
He's super cool and caring. I like math and I took calculus in highschool so none of the material was new for me. Weekly homework, semi-weekly in class quizzes (doesn't give a lot of time for them), three exams, and a final (replaces lowest exam). Will do drops depending on what his department allows. He's fun to talk to and will answer questions.
Idk how to feel ab this prof, I had his wife &loved her, ik that their family is going through a lot so I don't want to be too harsh, I think he made the class more difficult than it had to be, like "ppl above him" would be mad if his class did too good on exams, and hw/lectures would only "help with concepts," pretty easy if youre good at algebra2
Great guy great professor, any beef with him is really with the TAMU Math department. I'm genuinely awful at math hence the D (still got the credit lol). He cares about his students and despite personal matters in his own life he made every attempt to be there for us. Exams are hard but he tries to give slack especially after spring break.Great guy
Professor Lockhart genuinely cares about his students' success. If you're willing to spend time outside the lectures to learn the content and practice, you'll be fine. Calculus is difficult to learn in one semester, so students without prior knowledge may struggle.
dont take him over the summer. he makes things way too complicated
Lockhart is a great prof. He teaches fast but is a very good teacher and wants to help students. Any complaints that I have about this class are not Professor Lockhart's fault, it's simply because I don't like math. The class is hard but that's just the nature of calculus, you'll be fine but be prepared for a lot of work.
He is a really good professor and explains everything very well, but class pace is difficult (Summer).
He's ok, but he definitely makes the exams harder each time and it's confirmed by a bunch of the math 140 tutors too.
Lockhart is great, he really only follows the University given notes and home-works. He does not stray outside of that, and there is an expectation that you have reinforced math from high school. If you are struggling, he does not really like to answer questions so I would recommend Hands On Grades Up or the TA's
Taken Spring 2025. Calculus at A&M is very difficult. I hated this class, but Professor Lockhart was not that reason. Professors under this course are forced to follow a strict curriculum and tests must reach a required level of difficulty. Professor Lockhart is a great person, and he taught very well. He even made his exams on the easier side.
I took AP Cal BC in hs, but his methods of teaching is a bit complicated and confusing. I knew my algebra/pre calc basics, but when he taught them, they were different technique, sometimes even more confusing than what I was taught in hs. Doesn't answer a lot of questions in lecture. Lots of hw but the hw/quizzes don't help as much on the test.
He is unable to answer questions if not worded specifically in his way of thinking. Office hours were a joke and his exams are a lot more difficult compared to other professors.
DO NOT TAKE! The only thing he tells you is that you are going to fail! If you do take him, I'd start praying right now!
Has some of the hardest tests in the math department, quizzes are hard. He is very cold and if you ask a question thats not to his liking he is gonna be rude answering it. He goes through hia lectures very fast and kinda just expects you to know the material already.
Worst prof possible for 142. A student asked him to explain how a concept is used in real life. He said, "I could explain that but you guys are my business kids, not engineering, y'all won't be building bridges, you don't need to know that." He is not personable and won't even shake hands. He also has the hardest exams and provides no study review.
His exams are extremely difficult and nothing like the homework or practice exams given. I feel as though he makes students feel bad for asking questions. He degrades our ability to do math a lot. He doesn't teach like all the other math 140 professors, so going to the math 140 tutoring just makes everything even more confusing.
I took math 142 last spring and the tests were extremely hard, but he always made it clear which type of questions would be on the test. He explains complex math in a very understandable way. He was also always nice when answering my homework questions before class. I recommend getting a whiteboard and doing the practice problems in the textbook!
He's not terrible but I do think you have to be pretty proficient at math already before going into his class. My main issue was the tests (which I should have studied more for anyways). But they are kinda hard to study for bc there's no review. He basically recommends everything which isn't really helpful in narrowing down.
I dropped the class because the teacher was extremely difficult and unapproachable. He didn't allow students to introduce themselves and expected us to already know material he never taught. The exams were far harder than the practice problems, making it nearly impossible to succeed even with serious studying.
I had him for math 135(math for teachers) and he was great. He clearly cared a lot about the class, and the tests were not too hard if you just study the homework's and quizzes. Lots of group, open-note quizzes and overall, he was a kind professor.
Lockhart is a good teacher! He goes over what to focus on studying for each exam. Exams are pretty straight forward and most of the quizzes are open note, group quizzes. He does teach pretty fast, so having a good foundation in math is beneficial. There are occasional mandatory attendance days, but I recommend just showing up as lecture is helpful.
Professor Lockhart often makes students feel bad about themselves. He does not like it when you ask questions. I am not sure if it was because this was his first time teaching a class that was not high-level, but his patience was very short and he was very neglectful in actually teaching and explaining rather than just saying a bunch of words
Don't take Lockhart for math 140. He is very degrading and doesn't allow students to ask questions. He teaches towards kids who already have a strong math background, and makes it known that if you don't you will struggle. He makes his exams extremely hard and nothing like any practice exams or anything he tells you to study.
He was a fine teacher. He was quite gracious about extra credit and drops at the end of the semester. However, he was boring at times despite a good knowledge of the subject. He seemed to care about his students a good deal and fought to bump up to the next letter grade if at all possible.
Professor Lockhart is genuinely a sweet guy. I think he gets a lot of bad reviews just because he's direct, but he's amazing at teaching. Would've gotten an A if it wasn't for silly mistakes on exams, but they're pretty easy. Honestly just do the work, don't procrastinate studying at all, and go to his office hours, they're very helpful.
