Brett is incredibly passionate about Biochemistry and it shows when he is teaching. It was engaging to have a professor so excited about the smallest molecules and their reactions. He also was very flexible to student needs and taught to different learning styles, video, lecture, picture, etc... Also good time management with a large amount of info
Dr. Barbaro gave us illuminating lectures. Our textbook was extremely difficult and he told us what he wanted us to study. Thank heavens. He offered a lot of extra credit and dropped our lowest quiz score. No final. If anyone could get me through this class it was him. Thank you!
Quizzes are a bit difficult, but he's a very fair teacher - open to comments/ questions about material, willing to give extra credit. Very smart man with a lot of knowledge and passion about biochem.
Great online course! Multiple extra credit opportunities. Appropriate difficulty.
Prof. Barbaro is an excellent teacher who is accessible and down to earth. He is a researcher in the field and passionate about the material, but also really cares if you understand it.
Really nice guy, helpful and wants his students to learn!
Great class. A fair amount of effort is required to develop an understanding for the material. Great lecture format. Professor always available to be contacted, and provides feedback.
Prof. Barbaro was an amazing teacher to guide us through Intro to Biochem. At the beginning of the course, all of the material was available to study at your own pace. The lectures were very clear, concise, and well organized, which made reading the dense textbook a whole lot easier. If you are willing to put in the work, this class is great.
Dr. Barbaro made me enjoy and understand a class that I was terrified to take. He clearly knows his area of study and has the credentials to prove it. To get the most knowledge out of this class and do well, you must watch his lectures, take notes on them, and read the book to supplement the details. If you do this, you'll succeed.
Dr. Barbaro is a wonderful professor. This course was very fast paced, but doable. I worked full-time while still being able to receive an A in the class. I would highly recommend taking this course with Dr. Barbaro.
Dr. B is an awesome professor and makes biochemistry fun with different articles and videos to watch. He thoroughly explains topics, and is very open to helping his students understand the material better. Though the class has a lot of info, he responds quickly via email if there are any questions and gives many extra credit opportunities.
Great teacher, great class. The format is very clear. The lectures are well done. The quiz/tests are not easy, but they are not hard either. Dr. B is very reasonable and is willing to give out plenty of extra credit opportunities. The EC probably won't change your grade three letters, but if you are on the border it will bump you up.
I am always nervous that I will have an instructor that can't communicate course material well or is bitter over having to teach to introductory students. If you ever have similar concerns, you can throw those out of the window when it comes to Dr. Barbaro. The course was challenging but his enthusiasm is contagious. Sign up for his courses!!
Biochemistry is a challenging subject, and being that this class is online it may seem daunting to some, but rest asure Dr. Barbaro is an amazing professor, and this is one of the best online classes I've had the pleasure to take. Class is engaging, the quizzes challenge you to apply what you've learned, and Dr. Barbaro is always available for help
This is the most difficult course I've ever taken only because I was not familiar with the material. Brett loves biochem so much that it actually rubs off on you a bit. He grades fairly and is very communicative. Extra credit opportunities as well which is a plus! If I had to take biochem again I would definitely want Brett Barbaro as my professor.
I was definitely nervous about taking a biochem class, but Dr. Barbaro's enthusiasm and willingness to help made the class extremely enjoyable. Tests are a bit challenging, but there are always extra credit opportunities and ways to improve. He grades fairly and is easy to communicate with. I finished the class with a new interest in biochemistry.
Professor Barbaro is great! There is a test every Sunday on the lectures that week. There is a discussion board topic due each week. No midterm or final. Be prepared to study, his tests are fair for those who put the effort in. If you don't study, it'll show! There are also many extra credit opportunities that are very educational. Recommend taking
Easily one of the best courses and professors I've ever had. Dr. Barbaro focuses on the important aspects of the material and tests your understanding of it without going too overboard on the minutiae. If you put in the effort to actually learn and understand the material, you will do great. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Barbaro and this course.
This course is set up so that each week you have 3 lectures, a discussion board assignment & a test. The workload is not difficult, but be sure you have good time management skills to cover all the lecture material for the week. Professor is also very generous with the extra credit opportunities & rewards initiative on researching related topics.
Good teacher overall. He has good powerpoint lectures but, reading the textbook is very important because you can't get the most important info from the lectures.
I enjoyed taking intro to Biochemistry from Dr. Barbaro. He incorporated what he does professionally and gave us resources outside of the textbook to refer to. I felt adequately challenged by the course material and found his direction to be engaging and positive. I would definitely take a course from him agian.
Best teacher ever.
Dr. Barbaro is passionate about what he is teaching and this is evident in his lectures. He created a community with the class, encouraging students to interact with each other. He is fair and a great communicator. You will work hard, I studied the lectures, and read for hours each week - but tests are fair and manageable. Highly recommend!
Dr. Barbaro is an excellent teacher and clearly explains concepts. He is very passionate about biochemistry and this is expressed in his teaching. He knows the material very well, but also admits when he doesn't fully understand a concept to a deeper level. Dr. B also connects with students well and creates a positive environment (even online)!
Having taken biochemistry at my home university, this class was 1000 times better. The lectures were clear, work load was manageable while working full time, take advantage of the extra credit (the extra points I received brought my grade up by almost 2%), and I feel like I actually learned a lot in the short period. I loved this class!
focuses on what you need to get out of the course. Very little fluff. Very interactive and encouraging. Gives you what you deserve.
Dr. Barbaro possesses excellent knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. He doesn't read from the book. He doesn't drone on and on. He presents the information in a clear manner with plenty of extra material to reinforce the subject matter. He offers opportunity for extra credit and the required discussions are more interesting than most.
Amazing professor. Took him for online Intro to Biochemistry at UCSD and was blown away by his thoroughness, intellect and teaching ability. He is clearly engaged with his students, encourages participation, genuinely listens to each student and, yes, provides plenty of extra credit. Grading and tests are honest and fair. Study and its easy.
There is a test every week on roughly 3 chapters, and according to him, he only tests on what he lectures. This is unequivocally untrue, as every test has included information from the text not mentioned in the lectures. I wish that I had figured this out sooner and stopped listening to the lectures completely and instead just read the book.
it is an online course but you do need to invest a great amount of time there. Great lecture and i've learnt a lot from the course
Awesome teacher. Study hard for tests.
Good lecturer, but a bit of a rambler, even on prerecorded lectures for an online class. Overall, the material related to what was on the exams (you'll need to read to supplement, but that's a given). Clearly passionate about the subject and aiming to get others interested.
One of the top 3 online courses I've ever taken in terms of ease and knowledge to appreciate for life. And I've taken over 10 courses online.
I enjoyed to take this class! Thank you!
Dr. Barbaro is clearly passionate about the field of Biochemistry and wants his students to be able to learn it well. He identifies a lot of the concepts to clinical, outside application in order to make the material relatable. I would absolutely recommend this course to other students. Must pay attention to lectures and study but it's great!!
Professor Barbaro was a dream for an online biochem course - he gives ample extra credit opportunities, his lectures are thorough and he is eager to help you succeed. Highly recommend taking this course!
Great class, great professor. Clear lectures, opportunities for extra credit, amazing visual aids. Thank you!
There were two professors, Dr. Barbaro and Dr. Weinstock, and they're both awesome teachers. They made the class enjoyable, related many concepts to real world applications, the expectations were fair, there were many opportunities for extra credit, and there are freaking *updated* transcripts of the audio lectures--that was literally the best!!
I really enjoyed taking this course with Brett. Biochemistry can be challenging, but Brett has a great understanding of how to make the material relevant through fascinating videos, great slides and clear lectures.
Dr Barbaro takes an exceedingly difficult, dense subject and makes it fun and interesting. Great lecturers: this is where his course shines. Considering the amount of time one must spend viewing and reviewing lecture material, cross-referenced with course text, a great and enjoyable lecture is essential. This is what you can expect!
Great lessons! Explained things very well and simply. Makes you laugh. Awesome videos. Hints about what will be on the exams. Extra credit opportunities keeps everyone involved.
Lots of opportunity for extra credit. Dr. Barbaro explains a difficult subject in a way that makes it more "user friendly" and easier to understand. This class was taught with another instructor, Heather Grandin, and she is really good, too. Very friendly and helpful, gives good feedback on weekly assignments.
The class is not very hard, most of it is straight forward. Graded on only 10 quizzes instead of a midterm. Tons of extra credit, and eazy points for alot of dicussion board partcipitation. I would take him over n over again for all my pre medical reqs, and being online just makes it so much more convientent for me. Easy A, pay attention in lecture
Easy A for online biochem. Spent 1 hour on this class per week to take the open book test and write the discussion post.
Professor Barbaro is a great educator who takes time in this lecture to discuss everything his students need to know. He is very clear about the material and gives good feedback on assignments while offering plenty of extra credit opportunities. While this course is not difficult per say, it does require a great deal of effort and diligence.
Biochemistry with Dr. Barbaro was one of the best online courses I have taken thus far. He is very knowledgeable of the subject matter, offers extra credit opportunities and has an organized class structure via Blackboard.
Brett is a pretty good lecturer and has a nack for putting difficult science concepts into real world context. Great online class, I learned a lot even though I took Biochem already years ago in undergrad. Good choice for a professor.
I am a medical professional and took this class prior to a fellowship in oncology. I learned a great deal from Dr. Barbaro as I had specific information I wanted to learn and he exceeded my expectations. He caused me to go deeper, elevated my understanding of genetics, and gave me new tools to care for my patients. Outstanding professor.
well designed, welcoming class and clear explanations. No final, one test a week for 10 weeks and weekly discussion boards. Extra credit available if you need it. Most DB involve researching a topic and posting a paragraph, other weeks youll also reply to at least one of your classmates posts as well. I didn't need the book. No busywork.
Very much enjoyed this online course. If you watch the lectures and study a bit, you should do well. Some of the exam questions are challenging, but very doable. Would definitely take again.
Presents material in an easy to understand format. Doesn't make you memorize lots of facts and pathways. Links you to many videos and websites that help to solidify what you're learning. Wish all my science professors were like this!
Professor Barbaro' course was organized, with clear expectations, and answered so many of the question of why things happen the way they do in the cell. Its clear he loves what he does, and transfers a sense of enjoyment and awe into his lectures. Funny. Able to communicate difficult things in understandable ways. Not overwhelming/time management
Dr. B is very passionate about genetics! Some of the quizzes are tough but there's plenty of extra credit opportunities!
Really great online biochemistry course! Lectures were easy to follow and there were plenty of extra credit opportunities. Dr. Barbaro seemed eager to learn from his students in addition to teaching, and I would definitely recommend this course.
Dr. Barbaro's enthusiasm for genetics comes across in his lectures, and he manages to make an online class seem more personal. I would definitely take another class from him!
really enjoyed professor barbaro's genetics course. lectures were concise: he was very clear about what was important for the exam and what can be dismissed. course consists of weekly exams + discussion board posts. pretty easy course in my opinion, especially if you already took biochem/molbio. but you definitely will still learn! worth ur time.
Dr. Barbaro was a great professor for online Biochemistry. He was super clear in his lectures and he always tied it back to real life.
This is one of the very few classes I've taken where I really felt like the professor truly cared about making a good class. I really appreciate how Dr. Barbaro took the time to point back to things we had seen in previous chapters, very briefly review them, and explain why we are seeing them again which made learning new topics so much easier.
Professor's Barbaro's class was very manageable. I worked full time and was able to do well in his class. His lectures are straight to the point. We have one post and quiz due every week. The exams are difficult but will only test you on lecture stuff. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities. He is a great communicator.
Rigorous and thorough. Made me interested in a subject that I previously thought I hated.
He is a great lecturer and has a knack for explaining difficult concepts and processes in easy to understand terms. I found his lectures informative and entertaining.
The curriculum developed by Prof Barbaro is often administered by others. The curriculum he developed for Biochemistry class is split into 66.6% tests and 33.3% research discussions which must be properly cited.
The perfect course for someone who is looking to take an online pre-req for a pre-professional degree. All of the veterinary schools I applied to accepted it. The book isn't necessary, however if you have questions its much easier to find the answer than wait for a reply. You need to be dedicated, but you can do it. Extra credit is major!
I took this class for Pre-PA reqs. I was very scared to take biochem, but I am so glad this is the class I took. UCSD ext., is a little more expensive than CC, but I learned a TON, never thought I would get an A but passed the class easily with an A. Weekly discussions & quizzes. No tests/final/papers. 1000% would take again and recommend!
Sorry to say but the class was like a joke. The textbook sucks and the recorded lectures are just summaries of the textbook. It doesn't feel like you are receiving any real instruction. People only like this Professor because you can get an A with doing almost no work. I learned very little!!
Like ALL classes, if you do the work, you will succeed. Someone's comment, to me was unfair, the comment on this site is something like the person didn't learn anything. The book could use work, but Br puts emphasis on lecture and reading. Perhaps "office hours" to ask questions would be nice (even virtually). You get what you put in to it.
I work full-time, so this was a great option with limited time. Brett keeps lectures as entertaining and relevant as Genetics can be. No graded homework, so the emphasis is on lectures. I recommend adding some graded homework to force people to study and focus in on topics. Weekly quizzes make you study everything. I really enjoyed the class.
Great course. So much goes on behind the scenes in tiny cells. You need someone like Prof. Barbaro to explain how it all works. The course does not focus much on the reaction and mechanisms, so its not too chemistry heavy.
I read reviews on Reddit and on here and thought this class can't be too bad.. but it is. Tests are T/F and also A/b/c/ only type of answers. Also, the questions and answer choices are so confusing and convoluted.. and really not related to any thing he talked about? The exams are horrid. This is the first review i ever left for a prof.. pls avoid
I loved Brett Barbaros / Terence Wong's class. He takes very scientific and dry material and explains it in such a way that it is informative, engaging and enjoyable to learn. There are opportunities for extra credit reports as well. I would like to find out what other classes he teaches so I could take those. Thank you!
Definitely would not take another course from this professor again. Contradicts the textbook and says the text book is wrong, but still wants us to read the textbook for the class, which seems like a waste of time if the textbook is wrong. Tests do not reflect what is learned through the lectures and textbook.
I actually really enjoyed this class with Prof. Barbaro. It was asynch so you watch the lectures at your own time. The course is graded on discussions and quizzes. I currently have a B with one quiz left and I also have the opportunity to turn in extra credit reports (as many as you want). I feel it's soo possible to get my A. Take this course!
Professor Barbaro explained the lecture very clearly through asynchronous videos, but there were weekly assignments that helped keep the structure of the class going. I really enjoyed this class because I was able to study on my own time and it's great for any Biochemistry course you may need for graduate school! Most schools take this course :)
Dr. Barbaro was clearly passionate about the subject and shared a lot of real world knowledge in lectures. I liked that he focused more on understanding important concepts than memorizing moot details. There are weekly discussion posts and quizzes. Discussion topics were thought provoking and more than enough time is given for quizzes.
Prof Barbaro is an amazing teacher. He is clearly passionate about his work which makes it a lot easier to listen and follow his lectures. Prof Barbaro truly helped me understand in full detail everything taught in Biochemistry. I would absolutely recommend anyone to take his class if they struggle with Biochemistry.
I liked that Prof. Barbaro made sure the lectures covered the most important info. relevant to an introductory genetics class. Weekly discussion posts gave students the opportunity to connect lecture material to the real world and interact with classmates. Quizzes were open note (plus) and there are plenty of extra credit opportunities (plus)!
Professor Barbaro makes genetics easy to understand. I thoroughly enjoyed class due to his passion for the topic he is teaching and it was a bonus to get to hear about some of his PhD research. When a class is self-paced and online it is easy to just go through the motions, but with weekly discussion post you fully grasp topics studied that week.
Good course but be ready to spend time learning concepts autonomously. Direct interaction with professors is not common due to online nature of the course, however they are passively available via email. Dr Barbaro did a great job of talking about his experience. On occasion they had practice quizzes which were super helpful.
This class was clearly laid out. Workload was very manageable. The quizzes were difficult and I found myself second guessing a lot, especially if the answers included "all of the above". But they are meant to be difficult since they are open book, notes, and internet.
Textbook and lectures provided more than adequate preparation for the weekly quizzes. There was plenty of opportunities of extra credit. Brett explained the material well, and practice quizzes were available to pinpoint areas of weakness.
Great Professor, very funny and will respond if you have questions.
Awesome class, Tricky tests, LOTS of extra credit opportunities.
His quizzes were ridiculous and did not reflect anything that was in the book or on the lectures. He frequently stated in his lectures that the textbook was incorrect but he chose the textbook. He also never responded to questions on the discussion board when students were confused.
I took genetics at UCSD extension (not sure if I put the correct class number up top). The course is created by Dr. Brett Barbaro and the active professor communicating daily and grading quizzes and papers is Dr. Katrina Yamazaki. The course laid out by Dr. Barbaro is very thorough and gives you a good feel for genetics.
His hours long lectures are extremely dry and monotonous with very little information that's helpful or actually on the exams. The exams also contain questions that are meant to trip you up, which does not lend to your learning experience. Most of the points you lose in his class are due to awful phrasing of exam questions, just to make life hard.
Dr. Barbaro is a fantastic professor! I started multiple online biochem classes, including UC Berkeley and other reputable institutions, and Barbaro's series through UCSD Ext. is by far the best. His lectures are thoughtful, creative, engaging, and entertaining. He uses outside resources well, and keeps his lectures direct and accessible. Thanks!
I enjoyed my session with Professor Barbaro. Our biochemistry class utilized a format of one discussion post and one quiz every week to test retention of lecture concepts. The material tested was fair, and reflected what we covered in lecture. I do not think my textbook was mandatory, but it served as a useful resource for quick reference.
Dr. Barbaro made a complex subject digestible. Organic chemistry was helpful but not necessary for this class. He shared recorded ppts of each chapter. One short write up per week with a quiz at the end of each unit. Dr. Barbaro did an amazing job with this class! I learned so much. I highly recommend!
took Biochemistry w/ Anila Madiraju who use materials of Brett Barbaro. Consists of weekly 200 word discussion posts and weekly quizzes. Class is asychronous. Every quizzes are pretty straightforward, Quiz 4 had the lowest mean so beware and actually study. Even if you do bad on couple quizzes still can get an A due to Extra credit. great course
UCSD Ext Genetics class w/ Terence Wong and Brett Barbaro is great!!! Lots of extra credit opportunities and class is of weekly discussion posts & weekly quizzes. Quizzes are doable, take time to understand the lecture slides. Prof Wong uses Barbaro's material so he is the one you communicate with. very sweet and prompt with grading and replies!!
This course was intimidating since I didn't have a good undergrad experience. The way professor Barabaro developed the course was easy to follow. All lectures were available on canvas and as ppt with transcripts on both. The organization of the course and clear lectures really made this course enjoyable. I highly recommend taking the course!
The class structure was amazing. There were weekly discussion posts and quizzes that really emphasized the material. All quizzes were open note/book/internet. There are no exams. I really liked the structure because it forced me to study every week. The material is complex and difficult, but the structure of the class makes it really manageable!
Dr. Barbaro's lectures are amazing. He explains things very clearly and fact checks everything, even correcting the textbook or modifying it to his expert knowledge. The lecture subtitles are even accurate. No cumulative quizzes or tests, just weekly quizzes. Plenty of opportunity for EC. Well organized and would recommend to anyone.
The lectures were very thorough and more detailed than expected. Dr. Barbaro knows his material. Weekly quizzes not cumulative. Weekly homework involve reading articles and writing discussions. I learned how to cite research which I appreciate. Dr. Barbaro gave the lectures but Dr. Uranga was amazing too! Easy A if you put in the effort.
Professor Barbaro is such an incredible professor and teacher, he is so willing to answer any questions and truly cares about biochemistry so much. I would definatley take his class again if I have the chance to!
Professor Barbaro is a great professor! Expectations are clear, he includes interesting information in the lectures, and grading is very fair. Watch the lectures, and you should have no trouble on the quizzes.
Very good professor. Dr. Barbaro and Dr. Wong are great at communicating assignment deadlines and expectations. Dr. Barbaro is a great professor and is good at explaining genetic concepts. He clarified important biological concepts for me. I highly recommend this class if you need to fulfill a pre requisite.
Explained the material in a clear and concise matter. Kept it interesting. Would take again.
I took the Biochem class facilitated by Dr. Heather Grandin, however, the course material was created by Brett Barbaro. He synthesizes dense information in a way that's easier to grasp. His lectures were straight to the point and followed the outline of the textbook. Quizzes will be on the lecture material so pay attention to the PowerPoint!
Structure of course was amazing. Took it through praveen, lots of extra credit. Make sure to study lectures hard
Would take again
Took through Praveen! Easy A. Each week: a discussion post I would spend about an hour on, then there is a multiple choice quiz with about 20 questions to complete in 40 min. As long as you read the chapter and/or watch his lectures, you will pass the quiz. Both are not really necessary. I felt really unengaged and course material seemed outdated.
There were many Extra Credit opportunities which really helped to boost my grade. Also, there were extra videos and links that helped to understand material better.
I took 171897 Genetics through the UCSD extension. He is one of the greatest professors I've ever met. He surpasses the knowledge of the author of the textbook and revises the information in the PowerPoint. I wish I can take his different class in the future. 100% worthy to take this class.
Wonderful Teacher ! Would take again
Overall I thought the class was interesting and fairly simple as long as you study. I watched the lecture videos, then read the chapter and then reviewed sections that I would have trouble with understanding. I would take those sections and find youtube videos to watch to better understand. Highly recommend. Good Luck!
Took genetics with Dr. Wong being the grader, but Dr. Barbaro's lectures. Grades for discussion boards were graded by Dr. Wong - As long as you followed the instructions + met the requirements, he gave full credit. I'd say some quizzes were a little rough but overall Dr. Barbaro pinpointed in lecture what we should know and had practice quizzes.
Overall great professor and great course! I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to get a thorough introduction to biochemistry!
Excellent class.
Dr. Barbaro is very informative and knowledgeable of the material. He responds to emails promptly. Lots of extra credit and a lot to learn from him.
Difficult class but doable. Quizzes were quite challenging and required you to apply what you read/what was in the lecture. Weekly responses need to be well thought out and researched otherwise points will be lost. Took class with Dr. Barbaro as course leader. Would recommend.
Not asynchronous despite the syllabus saying so. 60 minutes for each exam with 40 questions each. The quiz questions are extremely nuanced and difficult (don't attempt to cheat they are fresh questions each week! Won't lie, I never received a grade below an A- throughout my undergrad. This class brought me to tears every single week without fail.
This was the first Chemistry course that I took which had NO math. Thank God! Course has a quiz and discussion post due each week. Yes, the quiz questions are tricky, because everything is open-book. After watching the lecture videos, make sure to READ the textbook! Student's who ONLY rely on the lecture videos/slides won't do well on the quizzes.
No math - hooray! Tough class, but combination of lectures and reading made material understandable. Written discussion topics each week were really interesting and also helped with integration of the material. Quizzes were difficult, even though they were open note/book. Questions required thinking and analysis to demonstrate understanding.
Professor Barbaro is so passionate about this course and it really shows. He is so funny and cracks jokes throughout the lectures which I appreciated. His expectations are clearly stated in the syllabus. Our work consisted of textbook reading/lectures with a quiz and a discussion each week. He provides so many opportunities for extra credit!
Professor Barbara did a great job of breaking down and explaining complex content in an understandable way.
Dr. Barbaro is great. I really enjoyed this class!
Great professor! 10/10 recommend. Lectures are easy to listen to, he has a soft voice that isn't boring!
The professor made the course very enjoyable and explained the material very clearly. He made concepts that are complex much simpler and I would say he does care about you as his student. He provided much opportunity for Extra credit, and was accessible if any questions were asked. I would take this class again most definitely.
Dr. Barbaro's lectures were very thorough and informative! That said, supplementing with book reading is a must to get best posible grades on the quizzes. Weekly discussions are very involved and require citing sources and research, which es great learning experience as it expanded on the course material.
The course itself was informative with weekly lectures, discussion posts, and quzzies. Professor Barbaro would give good feedback and was prompt in his responses. He was a great professor. Would take again.
Great professor who makes the material engaging. The lectures and textbook are helpful, and there are plenty of extra credit opportunities. I found unstuck AI to be a useful study tool alongside the class resources.
this was the perfect professor to take biochemistry with. he was very straight forward with his expectations for each assignment and for every quiz. very accessible for whenever you had questions and graded everything very quickly. would definitely recommend!
This course was horrible. Our instructor never answered questions on DM or by email, took weeks to grade assignments, crappy test questions. I would have rather taken the course with an instructor that was present.
I learned so much this semester. I appreciated your lecture style and loved the discussion posts—they helped me dig deep and make real-world connections. Your passion for learning inspired me. I actually find myself thinking about some of my discussion post responses in my daily life because I was able to make so many real world connections!
Prof Barbaro was awesome! Took the Biochem course. Highly recommend! The online asynch format worked best w/ my schedule and all his exams were fair. Lectures are easy to follow. Discussions take some time, but are very interesting. Gives out EC for above-and-beyond work and a 100pt EC report at the end that was my favorite & most intriguing part!
I really enjoyed this class and the lecture material was interesting. I would definitely take a class with this professor again.
Great professor Dr.Barbaro, lots of reading and listening to lectures, weekly discussion post, open note tests, not too bad if you prepare accordingly
As an online biochemistry course, the structure was well paced and the course guidelines for each week are clear. Since it is a 10 week course and week 11 is the final, it is lecture heavy with weekly quizzes, discussion posts and responses. Overall it was a good course, the professor is easy to reach out to and there was extra credit as well.
Take Prof Barbaro for Biochemistry! He is super nice and understanding. He gives great lectures and the quizzes matches with lectures well. Overall, I truly recommend him for Biochemistry.
Dr. Barbaro was awesome! His lectures were clear and easy to understand, which is helpful for such heavy material that is covered. Just make sure you study for the quizzes a.k.a. tests every week, and you will crush this class. If he taught other classes I need, I would absolutely take him again.
You can definitely succeed in this course if you keep up with the weekly material and take advantage of the extra credit offered. The lectures are interesting and not overly long. Notes with transcripts of the lectures and powerpoints are provided. I found this course to be so enjoyable and I am no fan of chem! Easy to do while working FT. 10/10!
Great professor, you can tell he wants his students to succeed despite difficulty of the course. You can also tell he pays attention to each student as everything graded provides insightful feedback. This class does require a textbook but the lessons personally were more helpful and helped retain the information better!
I was nervous to take this class at first but this professor made the class very enjoyable. You can tell he really cares about his students doing well as the grading criteria is very straightforward and he leaves comments on every submission as to how to improve or to keep up the good work. His lectures are concise and he offers extra credit!
Professor posted lectures that he narrated which helped to understand difficult material. The weekly discussion posts were helpful in understanding new material. He was understanding and always available to answer any questions!!
Professor teaches with exceptional clarity and engagement: the concise video lectures distill complex biochemistry into digestible concepts, while and extra-credit research tasks push students to apply theory critically. The rigor balanced support, offering timely guidance that deepens comprehension and fosters genuine enthusiasm for the material.
This course was extremely beneficial as I was able to successfully grasp the concepts of life at a molecular and atomic level. The course was intriguing and well-paced. I, along with others in the course, took this with the hopes of checking off a prerequisite for PA school and this discussion heavy course helped me on my path to a practicing PA!
Professor Barbaro was amazing! He always provided clear feedback and there was opportunity for extra credit as well.
Lectures were great and easy to follow.
Dr Bárbaro was a good instructor. The class made an extremely complicated topic very approachable, and it was designed by him. I don't think there is a better class for the price accessibility and quality of instruction. Every thing is very, clear I recommend this professor
This was a well-organized course. I work full-time and the requirements around this course was very flexible for me taking it online. The professor was passionate about teaching, engaged, checked in weekly, and had accessible office hours. Highly recommend!
Dr. Barbaro did a fantastic job with communication and organization. His course was fast-paced, but he had material available ahead of time and responded promptly to questions or concerns. I appreciated that the coursework overlapped with some of the work he has done in the real world. Without a doubt, I enjoyed learning more about biochemistry.
Dr. Uranga, is an excellent professor, she was always very clear and responsive with her instructions and always willing discuss any material in class.
Dr. Barbaro is clearly passionate about his field and explains concepts very clearly in his lectures.
He was very knowledgeable and was always willing to help. I'd take his class again!
He is the best Biochemistry proffessor you can imagine of
Great professor. Loves to break things down. Super clear language when he speaks, meaning he explains everything and stays on topic. Lectures had clear structure making the textbook readings easy to navigate and study. 10 quizzes, 10 discussions, and 1 final. Multiple extra credit opportunities.
Very knowledgeable professor checks in every week and is there to help you with whatever you need. I wish he taught more sciences. Def take him
Great professor, gives good feedback on discussion posts and requirements. Some test questions and answers were worded in a difficult way but he made the material easy to understand overall. I would definitely take a class of his again if needed.
I personally appreciated the .pdf files with Brett's subtitles on them because he provides such great insight and a great deal of information on every slide. Brett Barbaro, along with others did an outstanding job in putting this course together, and it motivated me to learn and ultimately do well in the course.
Very knowledgeable professor, and very caring. He did weekly emails to update us on the material and whats due. His lecture videos also came with lecture slides that had subtitles, making it easier for note taking. Theres 10 quizzes, 10 discussions, one final exam and optional extra credit assignments. Would take a class with him again if I could!
great experience!
Always available for questions and teaches difficult material in a way that's easy to understand with lots of videos and examples. Awesome class!
Great professor. Understanding and willing to set time aside for students if needed. Lecture and textbook heavy but the lectures are thorough on what you need to focus on. Discussion post and response every week with a quiz between 20-40 questions open book/notes. Great for people who go to school full time or work full time.
He did a relatively good job of making difficult concepts clear and when there was confusion over the lecture slides, it could be easily understood by reading the book. Also extra credit is offered which helps augment the difficulty of the tests.
Very knowledgeable professor, and very caring and wants his students to succeed! He would weekly send email updates to make sure we knew what was due and the material that was being covered that week. His lectures that were uploaded had subtitles making it easy to take notes and follow along. Would take another class with him if possible!
Mr. Brett Barbaro is an excellent professor who genuinely cares about his students. I took this course online, and I appreciated that his assignments really encourage critical thinking. He allows students to create their own discussion questions, which makes the coursework much more engaging. He is a very fair grader and gives extra credit.
Very well put together course.
I took his online asynchronous course through UCSD extended studies. Professor Barbaro was approachable, clear in his grading system, and thorough with his material content. We had weekly quizzes and one discussion post per week with due dates on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. The schedule each week was the same so it was easy to keep track!
