Very good teacher and very knowledgeable/insightful. There aren't tests but there is a portfolio due at midterms and finals of all the work you have done in class... There are many, many journal assignments, but they actually teach you something and show you how to look at literature in a beneficial way.
Very informative and entertaining teacher. He tries to "tap" into all learning methods. There are A LOT of journals, no tests, but the journals can be tedious at times. Overall, pretty easy class, just be prepared to do homework most nights for journals.
al right ?not so bad...follow his instruction throughout the semester..
I took him for American Literature and it was a good class. The subject matter is interesting, but it's a very critical class. All of the assignments stress some sort of analysis or critique of the reading. The group project was hard because of the group I had, but it got us an A.
This is a pretty good class, its very insightful and informative and it really does provoke thoughs about american literature. It is in best interest you attend class, and follow THAT SYLLABUS. Overall being prepared and having an open-mind is the key to this class. Its confusing at first but just get used to his teaching style and you'll be good.
I did not enjoy his teaching style at all. He did not actually teach the class the students did. His mid term was based on the Just Teach it assignments and Bio's of the students which cannot be right or wrong because it is based on their opinions. I did not enjoy it and would only recommend his class as a last resort American Lit!
After reading the comments that there were mainly journal assignments, I decided to take this American Lit class. That is (no longer or) not true. There were at least 3 rather involved assignments, plus quizzes, and, of course, midterm and final.
After reading comments on this site that stated the classwork consists mainly of journals, I decided to take this Amer. Lit class. That is (no longer or) NOT true. There were at least 3 other projects that were fairly involved!
After reading comments on this site stating that journals were the main activity in this class, I decided to take this Amer. Lit class. That is (no longer or) NOT true. There were at least 3 other projects that were fairly involved, plus quizzes and, course, midterm & final exams.
He grades hard on test, but a great teacher. Always remember to do your journals every week!!!
He makes class interesting, make sure to read, other than that you dont have much Hw
he is awesome, do d journals frm benining, attend d class knw the theme of each chapter, do 2 presentation JTI & bio. Quiz, xam, class assinmnent even xtra cr. led me to an A after all hard work,,,if u R nt hard worker n don want 2 stdy text don take him...bt really gud prof!
Expects work done exactly as instructed. Participation is important.
Very good prof. He tells you what they stories are about and u dont have to decipher the meaning of them. What he covers in class is what is on tests. I really enjoyed this class and i dont even like english classes! make sure u dont miss class often he drops grade bcuz of it. TAKE HIM!
easy professor but focus alot on "in class participation".. take him in summer !!!!!!!!
This class really stressed me out. :/ He's an "okay" professor.. but there are some moments in class that were really awkward because of some things he said... If you're prepared to do a lot of work, take him.
Do not take this class unless you?re intensely passionate about literature. Expect lots of work. Hard Tests and quizzes.
Online course. Assignments very difficult, instructions not clear, he grades VERY hard, and took ONE TO TWO MONTHS to post grades on assignment. Mid-semester I had no idea how I was doing in this class. His PowerPoint lectures were well done, and I'm sure he'd be an extremely interesting lecturer in class, but I do not recommend his online classes.
Not recommended. He does not teach, you are expected to comprehend everything on your own. A lot of reading and "pop" quizes, exams are difficult as well. Participation in Service Learning is mandatory. I ended up having to drop the course because I didn't want it lowering my GPA. Pick another prof. if possible if you plan on learning anything.
Do not take his class EVER. Unless you wanna read all day and be stressed out about if youre passing the class.
worst teacher i have ever had...the class started with 30 kids ended with 4...he lies and says you didnt turn in paper that you did turn in...and cares more about the school mag. than his class he teaches...avoid if all possible...
This is a person who is hard to relate to, and is socially challenged. He loves "his horses" and you should probably too for the duration of his class. Absolutely don't skip out on class if you get stuck with this guy. Mr. Bodily maintains a huge focus on grammar, and grades with no mercy. Good luck.
I found the class to be very challenging. I really enjoyed the online videos and would recommend this class to anyone who is very organined only.
I haven't even finished this class, and every single friend of mine in the class is trying to drop it. I'm actually in the class at this moment and he just told us to "turn on our dirty minds." This class is ridiculously hard, and the homework is never-ending. Also, he likes horses way too much for it to be normal.
This class I went into with high hopes. They were quickly smashed into a million pieces. If your one of those people, like me, who have always made high A's in English, and never gotten a bad grade on a paper. YOU DON'T STAND A CHANCE IN THIS CLASS. There is no mercy on grading or on the endless flow of work you will be putting in.
Do you want an easy "A" from a careless prof who doesn't give a damn, or do you want to be challenged and learn to write clearly, fluently, and gracefully? Take Bodily if you choose the latter. I love how the poster below mine vaunts his "high A" level English skills, yet doesn't know the difference between "your" and "you're." Idiots...
Dr. Bodily is very helpful if you approach him. His classes are not easy but you will learn a lot. Overall he is a good professor, very knowledgeable about the subject. I recommend him.
If you want a class that actually helps you learn. Then pick this class, the teacher is, hard, smart and loves horses. But if your a full time student with 4 or more classes, this might not be the class for you. So if you have 3 class you might want to take this class for an edge in the real world, but if you have four or more, reconsider. IMO
This class was VRY hard, the professor expects your best. Do not take this class if you just want an easy "A", however if you want to really learn I would highly recommend taking his class. I really enjoyed it.
Worst class
This class isn't difficult and Mr. Bodily is really entertaining and humerus. A little different but thats why I enjoyed his class. Do your five essays. Pay attention to his lectures. AND USE THE WRITING CENTER! Easy.
Dr. Bodily is a great teacher who cares about his students. he will not hand out easy A's, but you can earn one by following his guidelines. Some people may rip on him, probably because they did not show up to class or follow instruction. he had an interesting sense of humor. overall i enjoyed the class
Best prof. EVER!!! Very sweet professor who is passionate about English and knows what he's talking about! This class is COLLEGE level! Not recommended for the lazy butt students who want to get by doing nothing! obviously have to show up to get a grade. Really learned a lot from it! Students who choose to drop his class are seriously at a loss
Nice professor who is passionate about english. Did help me become a better writer, and for the most part I have made good grades on all my essays. But the tests are tough and you do have to give this class your all in order to pass.
Dr. Bodily was a great professor! The best thing about him is the way he conveys his lectures so perfectly! There can be no misunderstanding. If you choose to take his class, you will be happy with your choice.
Dr. Bodily is not very clear in his teaching. It takes him several class periods to explain our composition assignments and by the time we actually know what to do there isn't much time left. His lessons are also confusing and hard to follow and he doesn't explain well enough so you never really understand what it is you're supposed to be learning.
If you are the kind of person that requires collaboration between you and a professor DO NOT take this class. The professor WAS helpful, but only when he responded to the emails. Most of the time though, by the time he would respond the assignment was already due, so you are forced to make a guess in what you are suppose to do.
Dr. Bodily was NOT helpful. He never responded to emails. if you ask what qs you missed on an exam he will not answer. its not aot of work. 7 exams. 6 journals. and a paper. (which he does not help with) If you want an online class where you can actually talk to the teacher then Dr. Bodily is not your ideal teacher
NO ONE in the class ever understood our assignments and 80% of the class was taught by other students instead of him!! Half of the test questions we NEVER talked about and were over the most insignificant details!!I really reccomend NOT TAKING THIS CLASS
It's a sophomore level class and I expected hard but literature from the 15th century is difficult to understand. It was up to us to figure out the meaning, which is literature analysis. Dr. Bodily made the class interesting and opened the floor for interpretations but the tests didn't have to do with the stories, making it hard to study for.
this professor will fail you for having a medical emergency. turned in doctor notes even. the most horible teacher i have ever had!
I would recommend AVOIDING this class. It is an excessive amount of work - multiple readings, videos, chapters, exercises and weekly test. This class requires 6+ hours a week minimum just to keep up. He doesn't accept late work. And those weekly tests don't tell you what you missed and he won't tell you the right answers. What's the point? Wasted $$
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR.. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He will seriously fail you and his class online is not clear.
Assignment instructions were vague and graded harshly. Wouldn't allow late submissions and didn't offer extra credit.
He does his best to make the class fun, he's a genuinely nice guy. I wish he taught an easier class because he's a good professor just a boring hard subject he teaches. LOTS of reading. Like every week. And your papers need to be on point, you wont slide by slapping a paper together the night before. He's pretty funny too which helps.
Great teacher, even though it was an online class he always responded my emails. Dr. Bodily was a very helpful teacher. He cares about his students.
he need to improve on every his teaching skill
Dr. Bodily is a great teacher! He is very interesting and professional. He knows his material inside and out. However, he is a tough grader and his tests are not easy. If you put in the work and actually try, there should not be any problem.
no clear assignments, disorganized, no help, would not recommend
He's a vert smart teacher, but if English is not your best subject I would I avoid him. He is incredibly meticulous about grammar even for an English professor, and expects too much from his students. My biggest complaint would be the amount of homework he gives. I had a job at the time, and it was impossible to keep up with all the homework.
I personally didn't have very much trouble with him. Considering English is my second language (which I am still learning by the way), I believe he's a good teacher. he definitely does his best to make the class enjoyable and easy for students to pass.
He gives quizzes the first day or two just to get you on board to learn. If you do your work on time and follow his instructions everything would be fine. Also, there is one extra credit assignment he lets you do, I suggest you go for it since it can be the one thing that helps you pass. Take your time and do your work. Good luck you might need it.
This class is not for you if you are lazy because it is a lot of work. He is like a English google meaning he know his stuff and passionate about grammar and English. He is also a tough grader but if you put in work u will be successful. You can earn extra credit with service learning and green diploma. His class is also a lot of fun not boring.
Dr. Bodily is a very smart person but I would not recommend taking his class. He's really tough with grammer and the tests are actually really hard. The essays weren't too bad and were pretty clear but he is a tough grader. He does answer emails quickly though so if you ever need to reach him for a question hes there. Overall go with someone else.
Brett was honestly the most unhelpful professor Ive ever had in my college career as well as high school. He claims to help students but in reality, does absolutely nothing. Worst mistake Ive ever made was take this class.
Don't take this prof for any class. I had him for ENGL 1301 during wintermester and he was so unhelpful. He listed some extra credit opportunities in the syllabus, but when I asked about them specifically he responded saying "this is not really a good time of year for the extra credit offered in my class, instead do better on the next assignment."
Worst English professor I've ever taken. I took him for English 2327 and it's the most unorganized class I've ever taken online. He gives you a lot of work and expects it to be done within a week. Impossible if you have a job and idk A LIFE??!!! 0/10 would not recommend.
I took Bodily's class Spring of 2018 and he was not flexible at all when it came to grading papers. I asked him what i had done wrong and he did not give me a straight answer. He likes to say that he cares about his students but doesn't give his students a chance to correct mistakes or receive extra credit.
I would not recommend taking this professor at all. He claims to work with students, but does the opposite. He would say one thing and then do the opposite. Tough grader as well (for those wondering).
Hes a great professor. Im seeing a lot of negative comments about him but honestly I learned so much in his class! He is clear in his instructions and I passed with an A. (Do the service learning hours, He will bump your current grade to a whole higher letter grade, super worth it!!!!)
Se pasa de verga el wuey
Bodily is a great professor if you are actually looking to learn. If you actually dedicate time to this class you will pass. Follow the syllabus and youll be good.
Dr. Bodily is very passionate about English. A paper the night before wont cut it and if attending class isnt your best, avoid his class. Overall hes fair as long as youre willing to do the work and put forth the effort.
Professor Bodily is by far one of the worst professor's that I have had in my life, I do not recommend taking this class if you want to feel like an idiot 24/7. He is truly the worst, and I would scarce myself before entering the never ending criticism
Taken the 8-week course for English 1301 with Bodily will be involving many assignments due obviously. It is really all about dedication to come to class and do your work ON TIME. I do agree he is a tough grader but does provide fair feedback. I enjoyed his positive, and humorous personality within his students and others.
Very hard grader that gives to the point where it becomes ridiculous, also no extra credit what so ever, assignments are way to difficult to understand.
sooooo tough. everything has to be perfect with him. be aware please. if you have an attendance problem, dont take him. he has a 5% point penalty for each class you miss. After 4 or 5 absence, you cant pass the class. lots of exams, papers etc. save yourself
I got the chance of taking my DC class with him, and the review from this site actually frightened. However, things went actually very well with him. Just read the textbook material and the tests shall be easy to pass (there's nothing on quizlet, just FYI). He timely returned emails, allowed me to have video conferences to understand things in ppr.
Be prepared to read and write. He gives out a lot of work. Also, it wouldnt hurt to show up for class. You dont want to miss any assignments. Besides that, Professor Bodily is a good teacher. He genuinely wants to make all of his students become better writers.
I took Composition I online with Dr. Bodily and I had a terrible experience. He answered emails two days later. Also, he wouldnt give any feedback on the papers so I was pretty much on my own trying to figure out what to do.
Dr. Bodily is passionate about writing and won't waste your time and money. If you want to learn how to write, he is the professor for you. If you want a easy A or you are a cheater, don't take his class.
If you can change professors, do it. Now.
While looking at the reviews when I first started this class I was left in shock and thought I would have a rough time in this class! However, as I took the class I realized that Professor Bodily was an amazing professor! His class is organized very neatly and all are accessible to your needs and even provides extra credit for the writing centre.
Dr. Bodily's papers are more interesting than other classes and you can take tests as many times as you want for the highest grade. Tests are funny. He gives extra-credit. You write 3 major papers and 1 reflection paper, take 3 tests over the lessons, and do a grammar presentation. Not a blow off class. You learn a lot. I use his lessons at work.
I took his 8 week course and nothing about it is easy but i mean college isn't meant to be easy. He is very engaging into his students and does things like professor for a day so you learn from your own classmates, usually starts the class with a good laugh and also offers good extra credit. He is a tough grader, but he helps when asked for it.
He is really tough grader, but there is other assignments that you can earn good grade. The class gets boring sometimes.
I took his class for 8 weeks and it was pretty great. I thought it was going to be a hard class but it really wasn't. JUST WORK FOR YOUR GRADE! Only 4 essays (not long at all), 4 exams of 50 questions(some questions he makes it easy so you can pass), and 1 group project (that is super easy) show up to get a grade and he gives a lot of extra credit.
Avoid him if you can. He doesn't give back great feedback. A mediocre proffesor, just not the best.
Not fair at all with grading, tried so hard and spent so much time on his assignments just for him to be so harsh and I asked for help, did all extra credit I could, etc it was evident I was trying and he didnt care kept failing my assignments, he should be working at a top university not a community college if he wants to be that tough
Not a good teacher, simple as that. Talks a lot about his work(and in general) and it's not even good. Plus his grading criteria is for his own understanding because he has no clue how to grade or direct a class. If you read this do not attempt to pursue anything that has to do with Brett Bodily.
probably my worst professor, this is coming from a kid with a 4.0 GPA. I would ask specific questions in class and he wouldn't know how to answer them. doesn't answer his emails. and doesn't explain what you did wrong so you pretty much need to figure it out on your own. do not take his class if you care about your grades unless you want to fail
Great professor. I enjoyed his class. The instructions were clear and I enjoyed the assignments. He helped me publish my story in the college magazine.
Oh, you'll need the extra credit. Put that in your schedule now. You'll also be so busy you can't do other stuff. Boy does he talk about himself and his love for horses. Seriously, this guy romanticizes horses in his syllabus and it's in the test. I'm serious, he calls his students snowflakes too. Very professional of him. (Being sarcastic here)
Dr. Bodily is great. A lot of people hate writing, but he teaches you how to write for real and the papers are not too long. You can take tests as many times as you want and there is extra-credit. Not a hard class. He answers emails really fast and gives you feedback on papers. No textbook required. Do the work and you'll pass.
Terrible. Avoid if possible.
Took in Spring 1, was very nervous about the class because writing is not my best subject but Prof . Bodily has so many detailed assignment guides that he actually makes writing seem less intimidating. 4 drafts /peer reviews & 4 final drafts, writing center is extra credit, 3 exams, very responsive to emails! Not overwhelming at all, do recommend!
Taking this class online has left me very dissatisfied. Yes, he replied to emails quickly, but none of his responses really helped me. Throughout the course, there was little or no contact with the students. Perhaps he's a better professor in person, but I despised this online class.
Take this man's class at your own risk. With this professor, I had one of the most terrible experiences of my life. Didn't seem like he cared much about student's grades and terrible communication skills. I would send him an email with a question, and he would never respond in a helpful manner, answering none of my questions. 0/10 experience!
I like this professor. He does not grade hard at all, as long as you meet the word count you'll be good. I will say his exams are tough you have to make sure you actually do the readings and pay attention to the powerpoint lectures.
Condescending! He should not be a teacher.
i was shocked at how many bad reviews prof. bodily has on here because he is literally so sweet and helpful ! i actually learned how to be a better writer. however, this class takes a lot of time in order to be successful. 2 hours roughly of homework in between meeting days. tests are super specific (even the syllabus one).
I am not even done with the semester, and am taking an ENGL 1301 class with this professor. When I asked him about regrading my exam because the answer I wrote was correct, he said computers want the exact answer. You do not have a criteria saying write two words only and such so how do you expect us to do that. Worst professor ever.
Beware of taking his class online, worst professor ever. He would say that he would help outside of the classroom, but he is very difficult to reach out to. Do not take him.
Great professor! He knows a lot and he's really nice. He helped me with my job application and I got the job. You can retake tests for higher grades, rewrite papers if you ask, and get extra credit. He responds to emails quickly, and he will chat with you on Blackboard. Do the lessons, don't skip class, do the assignments and you will pass.
Dr. Bodily's course was one of the courses considered hard but worth it in the end. If you want to improve your writing I will recommend him. Took the 8-week course and had an essay every 2 weeks and also had to watch videos for my writing. Also, there was an exam for the videos. You will pass as long as you manage your time and do your work!
the worst class i ever take, a lots of homework, he don't take any excuses for sick people! don't give another chance, firm not trying to be friendly, if you miss a homework instead of encouraging you he ask you to drop the class. i did my best ended up crying because he was tough with his words, i doped the class. don't do online
Caution. Do not take him.
I had Dr. Bodily back in the fall of 2022. I loved his class as he allowed me to grow as a writer and gave critical feedback to fix my weak points. There were four papers, and though he grades brutally harsh, he provides thorough feedback so you can improve your paper with a writing tutor for a 100. He also lets you retake quizzes for a 100.
Professor Bodily is fantastic! I was lucky to have his class, and I'm so grateful I took it. His lectures were unforgettable and inspirational. I never felt sleepy in his class; they were incredibly interesting. He's the best professor ever! I'll always remember him, and I highly recommend taking his classes in person. He's truly awesome!
This class should not have been as difficult as it was. He is by far the worst teacher I've had so far. DO NOT take his class especially not an 8-week as I did because you will get a whole lot of assignments thrown at you.
Extremely tough grader and homework heavy. Although you can probably get through the class, expect to be very burned out in the end.
Harsh grader. Opportunities for re-takes and extra credit aplenty + gives good feedback. Do not take (8 WEEKS ESPECIALLY!) if you can't make the time for it or struggle with time management - doesn't tolerate late submissions without valid excuses (certificates, qualifications for disability etc). Stressful but worthwhile if able to handle workload
I put my too much time and effort in this course to get an A but at last I got B. Proffessor doesnot give good grades even if we put too much effort. there will be class presentation and 4 research paper. But there will be chance to re write research paper and professor allows you to get consult of library tutor but also i didn't get good grades.
Helpful but a bit tough
You can retake quizzes, tests, and rewrite essays, but he is still a tough grader when it comes to those essays. There will be 4 composition assignments/essays and 4 exams, the rest being participation and quiz grades. Extra credit is also available with tutoring from the campus.
Tough grader but doable work.
He gave me such a hard time and i barely passed this class. Makes you work your butt off for the paper and doesnot even grade you for it. He offers extra credit to rewrite the essay if you work with the tutor. But even after all the extra time and effort i put to do the essay rewrites, he didnt give me marks for a single paper !!!! Very difficult
This was the worst class I have taken for credit at DCC, harder than my Science and English classes taken at Texas A&M. Such a unnecessarily hard grader for a class that just fulfilled a requirement. BTW the quizzes only pop up if u go through every module. Would consistently give me 10 points off of stuff for no reason, seemed like just because!
grading transparency
I highly recommend avoiding this ENGL class. The instructor is extremely unfair in grading and no matter how much effort you put into the assignments it's impossible to satisfy him. Many students, including myself, have struggled and nearly half of the class dropped within the first four weeks
Good professor overall, he got back to my emails within a day. this was a flex course so there was a bit more work to do during the week but nothing hard just time comsuing. make sure to read/listen to the lectures and turn in work before the deadline he gives and extra day to turn stuff in. not a harsh grader and gives feedback.
Whatever you do, do not take a course with him
This professor was very unpleasant. My section was an 8-wk online course consisting of weekly readings and quizzes. While his class structure was easy to understand, the quizzes' content and his grade system were unfair. The questions he provided over the readings seemed extremely subjective and when he graded the paper, there was minimal feedback.
It's not hard as long as you keep up and do all the assignments and rewrite the essays if you failed.
Professor Bodily's class is challenging but worthwhile. While he's a tough grader, he provides great feedback and opportunities for revisions. Using Unstuck study alongside the free textbook helped me stay on top of the heavy workload.
He was an ok teacher, but it was a lot of work just stacking up, and when explaining the paper assignment it was to much and just adding a lot to make more work.
Great professor, one of best at Dallas College. Gives retake quizzes and rewrite papers but you have to work with a tutor. He wants you to learn and work hard. Keep up with the schedule and take advantage of his options and you will do fine. He gives a lot of feedback on papers and gives extra-credit. Don't use AI on papers and turn everything in.
Just take this class when you don't have any option left.
He's a great professor. Gives really clear feedback on writing assignments and the lessons are all very informative. If you follow the instructions on the writing assignments you shouldn't have any issues. He can be a little tough about grading but it's only because the instructions are very clear and he cares about you becoming a better writer.
Took online class with him. Organized. Syllabus is clear and schedule tells you what to do and when to turn in work. Lets you turn in 24 hours late. Gives extra credit, lets you retake quizzes and rewrite papers. Make sure you go to tutor for rewrite credit. Not easy class but you learn a lot. You have 4 papers and a lot of quizzes.
Great professor! Took his 8 week course at North Lake but half the class was online so had to do online lessons and quizzes. Class lectures were good. You have to teach class for 15 minutes. Not bad. You write persuasive letter, research paper, story response, and reflection essay. Papers are enjoyable and you can rewrite for a better grade.
His grading is unclear. He does not teach anything, let the tutor do all the work. No matter what you write, you will get a bad grade and ask you to go to work with a tutor.
I had Bodily for a 4 & 1/2 week summer course & struggled greatly. He will not take any late assignments. He seems knowledgeable and I do think I am walking away with better writing skills, but it was at the cost of a lot of stress. He is a very difficult grader, near impossible to please. There is around 13 quizzes and 4 writing compositions.
Professor wants everything done to the tea. I was ahead in my assignments and he took awhile to grade them which I don't mind but if it's to the point where you're not given a chance to correct the assignment he doesn't care enough to understand your time. Late work even with corrections is declined. Dont bother asking for your grade to be helped
Took online summer class. He is organized and easy to follow if you look at the Syllabus and calendar. Stay on schedule or miss deadlines, but he gives you 24 hour deadline extensions. You can retake quizzes and rewrite papers for a new grade. There is extra credit if you go to tutoring. There are 4 papers. You can pass this class.
Tough teacher
I got a very low grade in this course because of this professor. There were four assignments, and if you don't meet any criteria for the assignment, he gives you a zero, not even five points. I didn't missed any of his class but still got 95% in attendance. I don't recommend anyone to take his class.
Do not take the class if you want good grades. He does not help with assignment due dates and grades papers in the worst way possible
One of best professors at North Lake. He's nice and allows retakes and rewrites for new grades. You get extended deadlines. Lectures are funny and interesting. Go to writing center for extra credit. Class moves fast and there are daily assignments, but you can do it. He wants students to learn and get good careers.
Hes, a really good teacher, gives you enough time to complete assignments.
very tough grader.
