nice guy, a bit narrow minded, generally helpful
funny guy. A bit disorganized but well intentioned. Definitely a fair marker.
He is a little odd, and disorganized. Seems frustrated that his class is not up to his level intellectually. Funny, maybe, but in a mocking way I think.
humorous fellow; sometimes abstract in ideas; always willing to help; very learned & insightful; fair marker; messy notes on board, though...hehe...
easy to fall asleep in class. too many books to read compared to other classes. strange and odd books to read too. messy hand writings.
i really enjoyed his class. A pretty easy marker considering i got a fairly good mark in his class =) and he teaches very well too
was a bit pompous, lectured all over the board, hard to follow
The most non-readable handwriting I have ever seen, and he's not even a doctor. Doesn't really teach; most of the time it's students giving opinions in class. Funny though.
Brett is smarter than every one in his class. He will make sure you know it too. I like the guy though. He takes his shoes off somtimes in class which is ... confident.
It seems we're all unsophisticated compared to those with doctorates. You don't get a clean slate - if you're an undergrad, you see only the underside of the Dr.'s nose...
Liked him as a person, hated him as a prof. Lectures were very unhelpful. Tiptoed around discussing the readings, never really got to the point. Leaves his essay topics wide open and then docks marks when you don't write what he thinks is "right"
this guy is so condescending. it is unreal. taught me how to write a good literary analysis though.
I find him pretty okay in summer. All classes are basically him asking questions and then different students answering. Thank god there is no participation mark in the summer cuz i never read the novel. He isn't a hard marker considering my poor essays.
SO EASY~~~ not just me but all my classmates who have taken other english classes from other proffs thought so too. I enjoyed his class big time too
What are you guys under me talking about?? it's a easy class because of him... Other ppl told me that, but I didn't really feel it until I took classes from other professors...I missed him now...

He seems to teach with a hesitant mind. He's nice, and easy enough, but class sometimes is not worth going to.
while he might be a nice guy, as a prof he sucks. i didn't get anything from this class, aside from wanting to take a huge long break from any novels for a long time. he seriously needs to switch up the novels and make things more interesting!
From other people comments, perhaps this prof is better at teaching ENGL 110. I took his ENGL 112 and didn't find it very useful. He may be an easy guy, but he didn't explain things clearly in class. I didn't learn much from this course...
nice guy, answers questions in details, open to diff opinions, classes arent boring, tells u wat he looks for in assignments, marks easier than other ppl
Easy marker, helpful outside class hours. Interesting discussions, very open-minded. A little full of himself, but most profs are anyway.
Horrible. Had him over the summer and learned absolutely nothing. He gives easy marks though.
Hands out marks based on how much you agree with his interpretations. I've been speaking English all my life, graduated highschool with 95%, passed ENGL112 with a B+, but did horribly in this course. Didn't reply to requests to be contacted after class.
I learned most about Rhetorical analysis in this class. He is an aight prof, but needs to tell us more about his expectations on marking.
sometimes his lectures are interesting. I actually learned something from them. He marked quite easy...I didn't spend a lot of time on the assignments but i still got an okay mark.
Really nice prof!! I think he's one of the best Eng profs here. Taught well and was fair in marking. *2 thumbs up*
Lectures were boring but hes a nice guy and a pretty good marker.
Nice, helpful, friendly prof. He's often disorganized, forgetful and seems like hes making up his lecture as he goes along on the spot. Useless activities but its good if ur a lazy student. Marks fair but make sure u know what hes looking for.
lol he's a super easy marker. i had grammar mistakes everywhere and he still gives at least a C+. in the term paper i wrote BS, and he even commented "lacks a thesis. this paper doesn't meet assignment's requirements. is this an F? too bad it's a
I did not find him to be very helpful at all and the lectures were such a waste of time...we would go to class and he would just pace back and forth and talk about basically nothing. Even though his assignments weren't too bad, I didn't like him much for a prof.
This teacher is awesome. He is an extremely fair marker that tells you exactly what he's looking for. Although the lectures were a bit tedious, I enjoyed the class.
He's the prof to help you pull up your GPA "IF AND ONLY IF" you are very clear with what his expectations are.
Awful!! Biased, dumb and completely stuck in his understanding of sexual politics (which is all he will discuss). Not prepared or organized or helpful during classes. Scattered and doesn't know how to mark. Avoid his classes.
1)Interested in Canadian literature? Do not take it with Grubisic(he doent believe in it). 2)He is lazy and seems to dislike teaching. He sees himself as a lierary professional. 3) He is a good GPA booster if you're a bad student and probably a GPA decreaser if otherwise: Bs all around! 4) Horrible
Stuck in his own little world and won't fill you in on his expectations, yet if you don't somehow manage to pick up on them you will not do well. Unhelpful, and likes to critique. Completely scattered, would leave lectures hanging and not pick up where he left off. Would not take him again.
Great teacher, marking was very fair, we always knew exactly what he wanted. Also workload was very reasonable so that was great.
Not the greatest prof: he does a lot of pacing back and forth and drawing boxes and arrows on the board with little sense of dialogue or unification in his lectures, but he's so easygoing and laidback that it's hard to be mad at him for it. I'm not complaining.
He is the most unorganized, scatterbrained and unclear instructor I have ever had. He was marking our final papers during the final exam! He did offer some interesting insight into the novels studied in the course, but he did not necessarily teach anything. Boring, uninteresting + RANDOM!
Seriously avoid this teacher. I agree with all the comments about his expectations - unless you can figure out his very unorthodox views on everything from religion to sexual politics to alienation and identity, good luck. Lectures consisted of a whole lot of nothing-get used to watching him pace and make a total mess of the board.Unfair marker too
he is an easy prof if you write what he wants. if you dont agree with his view of things you most likely wont do well.
nice prof, easy marker, good reading material
Well-intentioned is Mr. Grubisic, but the class itself has a general atmosphere of inexperience and awkwardness. His assignments in theory promote the ideas of ENG 112, but he seems so terribly nervous that he cannot effectively get across what he is teaching. Helluva nice guy, though.
hes the best eng prof ! he's very easy going..i was sick and wasnt able to hand in my research essay i emailed him and he said nth about the assignment but take care. he went over the in class materials i missed very thoroughly. extremely nice prof and interesting. i hated english before but now i love it!
Very easy markers and a very nice Prof. Doesn't care much if you don't attend class. lectures were a little boring.
He's only easy if you do exactly what he wants. Otherwise you will get a C. He's kinda arrogant. One student called him Mr Grubisic, and he told the student to call him Dr. Grubisic. He wasn't joking either.
he markes 1oo level courses easier then 200 level courses.
hes super easy!! but he gives out bad notes... all he does is just scribbling on the board and u dont get much out of it... but anyways, hes a very easy going prof though...
his class is very clear.. the material the students discussed in class is somewhat helpful.. sometimes i thought i know the stuff by heart but i was definitely disappointed in my grade.. pretty tough grader.
One good thing about this guy, is that he picks some really interesting essays. He's abit on the wild side. Problem? I wished he would have been abit more clear on what he EXPECTS.
Nice and easy! If you do not understand his expectation, just keep asking!! Overall, he is very helpful!
He was a great prof. It was a fun class to be in and I also learned a lot! I got my first A+ on an essay in university :) He's a cool guy too! Altho his handwriting leaves something to be desired.
He doesn't even know the proper MLA style citation. I checked one of the texts I bought from UBC bookstore to make sure, and he IS wrong, BUT HE JUST DOESN'T ADMIT IT. Even my Engl 112 prof said how he cited the sources were wrong. HE IS THE ONLY ONE THINKS HIMSELF IS RIGHT. UNCLEAR ON WHAT HE EXPECTS, AVOID THIS GUY.
This guy is useless as a prof, his course outline makes absolutely no sense at all. I totally agree with the statements that he lacks clarity, i have never met a prof that is less organized and less clear than this guy. i dont get how anyone can understand him.
Office hours don't guarantee a body inhabiting them, does Not tell you what he Really wants. In university, I would hope to be given a short list of expectations for an assignment and then receive open-mindedness beyond that. No such luck. A comment on my midterm was essentially, "no, that's not the write interpretatin of the piece." Pompous, too.
His expectations are quite clear, as are the outlines for the essays. Most essays he had us do had a broad topic, which left a lot of room for creativity, something I haven't otherwise experienced at UBC. I actually enjoyed doing the work for this class, and he's an easy marker too! Also, essays didn't require a lot of time to write-and I'm not an

I really wouldnt advise you take this guy if you are interested in english, he is fine if you just need some lit credits, but he is an awful prof and it is quite obvious he doesnt care at all about the class or the material, but he doesnt care if you show up either, so if you just want the credits he is ok i guess, overall though, a terrible prof
Tends to pace, ramble, and make ridiculously messy concept maps on the board in lectures. However the assignments were very broad in topic, which kept the class interesting, and he was a relatively easy marker.
Dr. Brett is extremely helpful when it comes to questions or even personal problems (like you can't do this or that because you have problems with your life) HOWEVER. PLEASE BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL when it comes to reading this instructions...DOUBLE or TRIPLE check with him to see if that's what he asked for.
Brett was a great prof. It's important to maintain your personal style in writing for his class, as he marks more out of interest than emirical symatics. I also found it helpful to ask lots of questions, not only to achieve clarity, but to keep him from getting lost in his own head. Good prof overall, also cute and funny.
Not a bad teacher I guess, but rather boring.
Genuinely nice guy. His lectures are kind of all over the place, but in a good way. Can push his own interpretation of a text a little too hard, but is helpful if you talk to him outside of class about anything. Plus one of the more understanding teachers if you have problems outside of class. A good novelist too, I might add.
Confusing during lecture, he's all over the place. He can be funny tho.
Undeniably arrogant. Really seems to dislike students. More than once he called an end to our classes because no one would participate in his rather obscure discussion questions. He constructs a strange, tense class atmosphere. Perhaps he should retire to the attic and write more novels? Brilliant writer, but just not a caring, engaged pedagogue.
Brett is a great guy, i really enjoy his class. He is very specific on instructions on what he wants you to write, allowing the course to be easy. Hes really open to talking about anything and often gets off on a funny tangent and will dismiss class early. Definatly one of my favorite profs
messy, disorganized. going to class is basically useless. he was rude and curt with me. has made me dislike essay writing.
Extremely arrogant and self-important.. pretty much laughs at people's questions. if he doesnt like what you write about in your essay, you get a bad mark. coming out of highschool with 99% in english, i got a C in his class. grrrr
I think Brett is a very good professor. He is very straight forward on his marking. Follow his guidelines and you'll get an A. English is my second language and I did great on all my assignments. If you hate reading, you should take this course with him because we only read like 6 short stories.
Despite the messy writing I think this prof/author was great. He's really funny and the workload is very reasonable. Just make sure you follow his directions CAREFULLY! Also, he looks much diff. now.
He is a really easy teacher! Take him take him! Not much reading not much discussions! reasonable load of homework
He is the best prof in the engl department compared to other profs who teach english 112.Not a lot of assignment, and most of them are take home.If u include wht he asks u to do,u will be fine on ur assignment. You dont need to buy the book tht he asks u to buy cause we only read 3-4stories from it. Highly recommend you to take eng112 with this prof
If he mentions that he's going to give an outline for an assignment on a certain day, go to that lecture, otherwise, you don't really have to show up to class, he doesn't even take attendance or mark for participation. He's a really approachable prof., and i'm horrible at english and still pulled off an A, just follow all directions precisely!
He is extremely arrogant as another student mentioned. Told us he refused to answer emails on the weekend because he "doesn't work weekends". Lectures were 10 min long, MAYBE, and the rest was all reluctant student discussion. Not much point of going to class, honestly.
just follow the templates he provides when writing an essay. If you follow every single formula; an A is guaranteed.
very messy writing, good prof overall
An extremely fair marker, can't complain. He breaks down each assignment for you so you know EXACTLY what needs to be done, and if you do what he asks, you'll get a great mark. Lectures often ended 20-30 minutes early.
Not a bad prof cuz assignments were graded fairly...this course is pretty intensive during summer. Messy writing & notes, and he didn't explain things very clearly...but at least he's eager to help everyone in the class =)
Not a bad prof, terrible and incomprehensible writing, if you follow his guidelines and format exactly you will do well, don't waste your money buying the textbook you only read 3 stories from it and never touch it after, overall pretty good guy
Fair prof.Relaxed teaching.Very clear in his instructions and gets straight to the point.Easy to get an A if you follow his instructions closely.Although I ended up w/ a B despite trying very hard.Note:DO NOT try to do anything 'extra' or 'unique',and just simply follow his instructions and and you will get an A.Not much work.Overall Great Prof.
Good prof overall. Wish that he had included poetry in his lit course but instead he chose to use his own novel...but other than that he was an interesting and intelligent prof.
Very good professor who cares for his students. Always willing to meet outside his office hours since I had a timetable clash with his. As others have said, relatively easy to get an A as he breaks down the instructions to a lot of details
He's a wonderful teacher that really boosted my interest in english. You'd be lucky to have him as a teacher! Follow his instructions and you'll do well. Attendance is not mandatory but you will definitely struggle if you do not go. He's honest, straight forward and a bit of a hipster ;) Take advantage of his wonderful teaching!
He's great!
I suck at english and i got A-. Easy marker, i was actually getting pretty high mark but then i bombed the finals. Just do everything he asks you to and you will get at least A-. I got higher mark in his class than any of my english class in highschool
Brett is by far one of my favourite profs! He is super chill in class, and is really insightful. We read 5 amazing novels for Canadian Lit, which he picked, and had interesting opinions on. He is really funny and easy to talk to. Additionally, he's a fairly easy marker, as long as you make a good case for your argument. Take his class!
He's a very relaxed and approachable prof. And stands out as "different". I guess some people will see him as arrogance because of his style of speech, but I think you can feel that he's really not.
Best Prof. I am not good at writing, he helps me a lot.
awesome proff. easy marker. and maintains interest in class
One of the easier 112 profs for sure. However, he admits to never giving A+'s for take-home essays. However, he gives very detailed instructions. Final grade is composed of two presentations, one in-class essay, three take-home essays, and the final. No attendance marks. Attend classes (or get notes from a friend) and follow instructions given.
I was really lucky to have him as my English professor. English is my second language, and I was so afraid to take an English course in University. BUT!! I loved it! It was actually a GPA booster. You should go to class and keep all his handouts, and FOLLOW the format of the examples in the handout.Just follow what he wants.
Even though attendance isn't mandatory, ATTEND ALL HIS CLASSES. He basically lays out everything you need to do in an essay to get a decent mark. Just follow EXACTLY what he says.
Had him during the summer. Clear prof, clear outlines and outlines, do as he says. Marks fairly, and not too harsh. Made me appreciate taking english for once rather than considering it a burden.
Brett was a great professor. His class was pretty well structured from the get-go. We knew exactly what we had to do at the beginning of every assignment. He gave us reasonable expectations and he marks really generously. I would definitely try to get him as my prof.
Brett has a very structured course and it's fairly easy to get by. Follow his instructions well, hand in your work and you should get a very decent grade. Final is partly dependent on whether or not you can successfully write a correct rhetorical analysis which can be ambiguous when it comes to deciding explanatory or argumentative.
I wasn't happy with the idea of having to take English in first year, but Brett made it an amazing experience. His workload is smaller compared to other profs, just FOLLOW THE RUBRIC EXACTLY (it's super important to include every small detail like pagination, spacing, font) and you will get a really good mark.
Brett is a great person! He's very helpful. There's only 3 out of class essays. 1 in class rhetorical analysis. The final is 2 essays (1 rhetorical analysis and 1 persuasive essay). He is very generous with grading. As long as you follow the structure he gives you, you should get at the very least a B. The average for my class was a 75.
Great prof!! He is funny, really nice, and explains assignments very thoroughly. He is also an easy marker. Textbook required for the class was only used twice.
Brett. Is. Awesome. Do anything you can to get into his class. Have always hated english but he made it my favourite first year course. Such a cool guy, classes are interesting and he tells you exactly what he wants for every assignment. Understands we have a lot going on, so very small workload. Follow his instructions and you'll easily get an A!
He has really structured assignments where he expects a specific format, and as long as that is followed, you can get a passing grade. Most of the class materials were emailed to you. I would recommend him for those who are good at following directions, but not for those who like to be creative with their writing.
Great English prof. I don't like English and I actually enjoyed his course. The class felt like a high school English class. His course is set up easier than the rest of the ENGL 112 profs. If you follow his instructions, you will do well in the course. He doesn't make you buy any textbooks.
Amazing prof, super helpful
Brett is an awesome teacher that really cares about his students. He makes assignment guidelines clear and is willing to help students on papers. Would recommend him for anyone taking a 100 level English class
Great professor!
Participation is not required but it is helpful. It really is just research and work out of class for the essays.
Hands down you will not find another English professor that can be more sassy than him in UBC. And easy-going. And an easy grader. And does not require textbook.
I loved Brett. I never really enjoyed an English class until this one. He was always cracking jokes, and his lectures were pretty easy to follow, despite his awful handwriting. Make sure you take notes and attend every class. He literally spells out how to get an A on every assignment. If you go to class and follow his instructions EXACTLY, easy A.
Brett was a super easy grader, as long as you very carefully follow his instructions. He is super laid back and really interesting and hilarious to listen to. His final was very easy as he tells you exactly what to do and the assignments are not very challenging.
Great Prof, his 15 lies told as an adolescent article is hilarious and I highly recommend you read it! Great Prof and Great class! Would take him again.
Brett is a great guy! Interesting and thought provoking lectures- funny dude. Generally easy marker but you must follow his instructions well. He tells you exactly what to do for every assignment and even the final exam. Chill and genuine guy.
He has a very strong personality (so be prepared). attend class for thematic guidance (recommended). essays - extremely generous with giving you space to explore your own ideas about texts. it was one class where i had the most creative freedom to express myself and my opinions. but its important to produce quality work of high standard and depth.
Really great prof!! Super laid back but also super caring if you need some help! You barely have to do any reading in the class. Super straight forward with expectations for the essays.
Great professor with a strong personality and messy handwriting. Manages to keep the class focused on a class that no one REALLY wants to take. Fair marker, approachable for questions, and overall nice guy.
Brett was an AMAZING prof. I really didn't want to take English 112, but he made it very bearable, and maybe even fun! He has a great sense of humour, and is very helpful in his office hours! I'd seriously recommend taking him for ENG 112, and make sure you go to his office hours!
Took this class because it was mandatory. The novels were alright but not particularly interesting to me. Don't take his class if you don't like speaking in class or have trouble understanding the deeper meaning in novels. Also he speaks quickly and I had a hard time keeping up with his train of thought. Definitely not a tough grader though.
TAKE HIS CLASS! he may seem assertive in class since he puts you on the spot His grading is very fair-you get what you work for! He is VERY clear about how essays should look like, sentence by sentence which makes it easier to write. Follow his steps and you will do fine which is why I like him since he tells us exactly what he wants. GOOD PROF!!!
Honestly really fun guy. Hes a really nice person to talk to and he always manages to spice up his lectures with his personality even if English is not the most fun course in the world. In regards to marking, hes fair but by no means easy; hes not an easy grader or a hard grader.
Brett is quite possibly the most wonderful English prof I've ever had. I enjoyed his class thoroughly, and the books he made us read have become some of my favourites. Super funny guy, can be a bit hard to follow along during lecture but still loved it.
Tells you how to write a proper essay, gives reasonable marks
He doesn't use canvas, so make sure you go to class. It was an easy class if you read the books. However, he made us buy and read his book and spent the longest period of time (half sem) analyzing it. Probably one of the worst books I've ever read. Also, he never stops walking, super distracting and creepy.
Great professor, great energy -- he's always enthusiastic in class and excited about what he teaches. I learned a lot from him. His classes are filled with great discussions, so I also learned a lot from my peers too. The selection of books are interesting and genre-based (includes his own work), and definitely expanded my repertoire.
He's laid back in lectures, but has high standards for class essays. He moves around a lot, which adds energy to lectures, and he makes great use of the space. To best appreciate his instructional style, you'll need to appreciate his lateral thinking, and apply that to your work also. Show up, be a critical thinker, and participate in discussions.
Overall, his class is super chill. If u just come to class and have read the assigned readings you will do fine. Although he doesnt put a lot of emphasis on attendance I would recommend still showing up. The class does consist of reading 4-5 books but when it come to paper writing hes an EXTREMELY fair marker.
Brett is a super chill prof. He doesn't really care if you come to class and doesn't mind if you to choose to not participate. Although the amount of essay writing is not bad, GET READY TO READ. But overall, really nice guy, is a SUPER fair marker and very accessible outside of class.
Engl 112 was so chill with Brett. He ends class early half of the time to allow people to work on essays. He did not require us to read any textbook or books. We simply had to read some online articles for a couple of written assignments. He is very clear on the format he wants for the essays, so follow it and you will do well.
While Grubisic is a funny lecturer, he is a hard marker. Unless you agree with his viewpoint and write exactly what is said in class, you won't get a good mark. Therefore, participation and attending class should be MANDATORY. Grading rubric is unclear; though from experience, he looks for analytical thought and original writing. Overall, MEH prof!
His lectures were confusing, the covered info wasn't really relevant to any papers projects or tests. Grading criteria was SUPER vague. Was extremely disrespectful over email, often not answering questions or clarifying instructions. Felt like a waste of time asking him for help and forced his students to pay for his own writings for class
Bretts class wasnt the worst. I did it over the summer so it was 4 essays, one 3000 word journal assignment, a mid-term essay on 5 books, in 6 weeks, which was pretty intense. The essay questions were very specific and offered no wiggle room to write on what you wantbut thats what the journals for. Also, his book was the worst, period.
Super chill prof, doesn't care if you show up, and marking is very fair. This particular semester was thankfully bereft of poetry. Books were readable and fairly short. Final was in keeping with the rest of the course.
No required reading. Gives you lecture time to work on graded assignments. Clear grading criteria which he goes over in detail during lectures, follow his instructions/ask for feedback for good grades. I took the 3hr evening class, usually lets us out an hr early.
I like him as a person but I didn't enjoy his online class this year. It was lecture heavy with little discussion and I wish we could have gone deeper into the material and that he challenged us more. I felt generally unmotivated but it was a tough year. He did go easy on us with grading which was nice.
Brett is wild which never makes class boring. However if you are into structure you won't find it here lol. One of his books are always in his reading list, and yes they are a bit hard to get through, his writing is pretty similar to his personality. Pretty nice grader, if you put in a solid effort you should get nice results. Has cool cats too.
I think Brett is a fair marker, and is pretty chill HOWEVER, his reading list is pretty standard and he REALLY likes to hear himself talk. Online class seems pretty useless, mainly gives his opinion on the book, and if you don't agree, just don't tell him lol. Overall chill, but very boring and not suitable to those who actually enjoy english.
Generally a chill prof, and not a hard marker if that's what you care about, but he will make you read his own books, which I found pretty uncomfortable given how personal the book we read was.
I judged him too quick. He is actually a pretty good prof with a very good understanding of the subject matter. He gives good pointers. You should include his notes with your own thoughts on the subject matter to get an A in this class.
Prof Grubusic is such a caring teacher! He is definitely a hard marker and is vague about assignment instructions, but he is really understanding. Take his class if you can!
Brett was an amazing prof and I found his class very doable. He has a lot of insightful opinions on our readings and I found these fun to hear! Although, he encourages his students to have their own opinions for the assignments and support them by evidence. However, his grading criteria is vague. But I'd totally recommend!
Brett is the best English professor I've had. He is easy to talk to and always happy to discuss essay ideas with his students. His lectures are entertaining and he shares many great ideas that help his students form their own understandings of the novels. He is supportive of students' ideas, a very fast grader, and a wonderful professor overall.
We had a small class of like 20 people, so our class had many discussions. This class can be passed by just reading the assigned books. As an engineer, this class was less time-consuming, much better than WRDS. I read 1 of the assigned books and after getting 98 on my first essay I began to put my efforts into my other classes and still did decent.
Professor Grubisic's ENGL110 class was surprisingly manageable. While attendance is mandatory, the readings are straightforward. Using resources like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helped me stay on top of the assignments. Overall, a decent course if you engage with the material.
