very interesting class, great teacher
You'll never sleep in his class. Very interesting.
Best ever. It is worth it. You come in ignorant and leave educated.
this is the most amazing class, i will ALWAYS remember what i was taught.
One of my hardest classes freshman year but I LOVED EVERY BIT OF IT!
VERY difficult tests-teacher is great. I don't feel I gained much from the clas
This class pushes you in a wonderful way. The challange was worth it
Always an interesting lecture.
HARD TESTS!!! Awesome lectures, gets you really pumped. Don't remember much.
Awesome lectures! Take this class! Difficult tests. Learn a lot!

You think you know a lot - until you take the tests. But he is an amazing lecturer-even on 2 hours of sleep, I did not fall asleep in his class. I would take it again, despite the tests.
Awesome teacher! Really passionate about what he is teaching! Extremely difficult tests!
Awesome teacher! Tests are ROUGH! Learned a TON!
Loved this class! One of my favorite yet at BYU. Everyone says the tests were hard, but I didn't think so. Just think like Latimer.
good lectures, study hard for the second midterm on economics if you suck at it. get to know your ta's in order to succeed.
Not very personal, but tons of fun. I appreciated his clips of "The Wall" and "Braveheart." Great lectures, hard tests. By the way, HE IS MORMON. Don't let him fool you.
Darn good for teaching people to live.
really good teacher, knows his stuff. read all the material. do not miss lab! hard tests, but worth it for the amount of learning involved.
Great Professor, great lectures. One of the best at BYU. Also very entertaining. You WILL learn a ton.
Simply the best lecturer at BYU. Also gives some of the hardest tests on earth.

Very difficult tests. Fun lectures. My TA was horrible, which made the class harder.
He is probably one of the coolest people have ever met. He is really smart and open-minded.
Wonderfully intelligent. Very good use of media and outside resources. Tests actually expected us to know the information in-depth. This is the way an education should be.
Professor Latimer is awesome, awesome, awesome! His class was one of my favorites of all time! His lectures are absolutely amazing! He is intimidating at first, but he is a great teacher and he is hilarious and entertaining. Take his class!
Fantastic professor. He keeps his lectures entertaining with tons of clips and a wry sense of humor. Some of the hardest tests I've ever taken, but I learned a lot and really came to appreciate the material. If you can take his class, by all means do!
Lectures were very fascinating and the TA's were helpful. Loved the singing, dancing, and entertainment. Lipalicious.
The best professor I've ever had. He's open-minded & challenges his students to be as well (not common at the Y). He is passionate and inspiring. His lectures are entertaing. On our last lecture he got a standing ovation! Harder tests.
Very charasmatic, those tests were a B though.
Great teacher, awesome class. Tests are intentionally vague and difficult.
Very good lecturer and very interesting class. This was one of my favorite classes. Not boring like usual history classes. Tests are hard, but there is a nice curve. Highly recommend this professor for this class!
He is a good teacher who does an excellent job of getting his points across. His sense of humor is good as well, which helps make the class even more interesting. The issues he covers are applicable to daily life. The tests are moderately difficult, but only cover things that he talks about.
Awesome teacher, makes the subject very interesting and easy to understand - so interesting that I can handle 2 1/2 hrs at a time of it! (Which is amazing, because I have a very short attention span)
I did horrible in this class because I didn't ever read. However, I looked forward to every one of his lectures. They were the best lectures of my freshman year. Great teacher who gains love and respect of students throughout semester, helping us to be more open-minded in the bubble!
The best college professor I've had. His lectures were stimulating in a way that made me want to go out and improve the world. He seemed to have a good knowledge of the subject, and encouraged an open-minded approach. This class was more than just tests and reading-it was about learning.
I really enjoyed taking this class from him. The class was 2 1/2 long, once a week. One can imagine that this would be pure hell, 2 1/2 hours straight of history. But he kept it very interesting - I never got bored in his class. I learned lots and have a much higher regard and respect for history.
Bro Latimer is a great lecturer. The class and tests are hard. Make sure you have a good TA (mine was horrible!) since they have huge influence on your grade.
Good lectures. Used a lot of multi-media and interaction. Tests are not that fun. More difficult than the average class.
GREAT teacher and enlightening class. Tests are really hard, but the lectures are great and if you work hard you'll do well. This is one of the very best classes I've taken at BYU. I loved it!!
I looked forward to his lectures. Very prepared and relevent. One of my favorite classes at BYU. Tests weren't easy, but he made it interesting so it wasn't hard to study.
Best teacher I have had at BYU. Classes and lectures very interesting. Tests are hard but he implements a really good curve. Overall I loved the class
Lectures are fun, but have little to do with the tests. A lot of your grade depends on your TA, and getting one of the good ones is hard. The tests are honestly ridiculous. One of the worst classes I have taken in university, and I actually looked forward to taking this class before I was in it. Teacher is arrogant when you visit him in his office.
The lectures are amazing. It is like watching an episode of the History Channel. Dr. Latimer is truly a master of his subject, and extremely intelligent. I thought that he was not arrogant at all, he is just always thinking, and may be a little distracted when you talk to him. I'll agree that a good TA is a must for this class.
Take this at the SLC-Center! Once a week, no labs, no papers or homework, no service hours! Latimer is BYU's greatest professor, and he teaches a great class. This was the first class in which I actually felt enlightened after each lecture. Latimer uses lots of fun videos. He tells you beforehand what will be T/F, Matching, etc on the curved tests
I have never hated a class more than History with Latimer. The lectures aren't clear and dont match what are on the tests. If you take a class from him, make sure to do all the reading - if you can figure out what your are supposed to read because he doesn't have a syllabus schedule. I would rather die than take another class from him again!
AWESOME lectures. His tests are hard but it is graded on a "super curvve". Very very entertaining. I recommend him to everyone.
Who cares how hard his tests are! Everyone does bad on them. It is curved don't worry. The best part about this class is how cool the teacher is. Latimer made the class very interesting. He has teaching down to an art and kept my attention the whole time. Bottom line, tests can drive you crazy if you let them but DON'T! Just enjoy his class.
Definitely take this one with Latimer at the SLC center. The lectures are a little long and sometimes hard to understand, but Latimer is way cool and incorporates lots of movie clips and humor. Tests are hard, but there is a SUPER curve. My 68% on a test turned into an A-. Its way worth it. I would definitely do it again! Take it from Latimer!!!
I have never been in a class where I was interested in the lecture despite the fact I didn't really understand it. His class isn't boring but it's hard to understand the point he is trying to make. His final is killer...he tells you that the review covers everything but it doesn't at all. However, he has a super curve which helps a lot.
This teacher is terrible. It's extremely hard to understand what he's talking about at all times. He fails to answer students' questions without lacing each answer with sarcasm or criticism. There's no syllabus, and no telling what's going to be on each test. I too would rather die than take a class from him - DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Latimer is sweet. Such a cool guy. His tests are seriously impossible, but SUPERCURVE will be your best friend. I sucked on all the tests and still got a B+ in the class. It was worth it, Latimer is an amazing teacher. He is very entertaining and smart. He knows his stuff. COOL guy
Wow. Ok, so I really did not like this teacher. He was my least favorite teacher I have had at BYU. I drove up to take the class on Wed nights. I really regret taking his class. It was so hard to understand what he wanted on tests. The average score on tests was below 50%. I even saw someone get 15/260! And they actually filled out the whole test!
He was my favorite lecturer in many years at BYU (including grad studies). The tests are tricky but not impossible. I TA'd for this class for a year and I know it makes a huge difference if you get a good TA. I felt bad for some of my friends/relatives who got rotten TAs. And don't get on your TA's bad side, they have a lot of grading leeway.
I really enjoyed him, lots of fun and really well-organized lessons. He talks pretty fast so it can be difficult to understand him.
I REALLY enjoyed this class. Yes, it was tough at times but VERY, VERY rewarding. great teacher, I would recommend him to anyone. If you actually study for the test than they are do-able, even if you don't get that great of a score the curve really helps. lets face it, AmHtg is hard, why not at least make it an enjoyable class, Latimer does that!
Latimer is a joke. If you actually want to learn anything, do not take this class. His main concern is being funny. Often, he does this at the expense of his students. He is unprofessional and times and is unclear in his expectations of students.
Hard to understand, he talks fast and mumbles. Kind of offensive while trying to be funny. tests were IMPOSSIBLE. However, was willing to work with me when I missed the final because of bad traffic. nice guy, but very dry humor. i didn't really know what to study for, his lectures were hard to understand.
Latimer is the best instructor you'll ever have.Class is NEVER boring and you'll leave wanting to start a revolution. His tests are extremely difficult but the curve will save you. Daily quizzes on text. Attendance is mandatory.
Fast lecturer, but if you do the homework you'll do great. He illustrates points very clearly with movie clips and class-involving examples. The class moves so fast that his curve is necessary.
Best teacher I have ever had. I knew nothing on the subject, but found myself talking about the things I learned in class throughout my every-day life. You learn amazing stuff. I don't even like the subject, but found I loved my class. You will love him and the class. I got an A. Simply a teacher that will change your life.
Awesome teacher, best class I have ever taken, would highly recommend to anyone who wants to actually learn.
Incredible Teacher! Very entertaining, but he entertains with a purpose. Favorite class.
He is slightly crazy but a genius! I loved his class because he gave us the history side of things without making it boring. He inspres and makes you think a ton. His tests are REALLY hard but the curve is huge. Lots of reading and movies to watch, but I will definantly take another class from him!!
Professor Latimer was hilarious. His dry humor made lectures interesting. The tests were killer but not impossible. Reading before class isn't mandatory but it is helpful. American Heritage is a hard class, you might as well take it from an awesome professor.
Quirky, but very funny and informing. Takes a while to get used to his teaching style. Loves to have daily quizzes where several, if not all, of the answers are "False". When in doubt, choose "False" on T or F questions. Uses a curve and offers extra credit. You have to read the D&C and the manual if you hope to stay afloat!! Tests are tricky.
Latimer is a stud. He talks really fast but after a while you get used to it. I think its funny how BYU students get offended from his comments. Welcome to the real world zoobs. Stop living in a bubble. His tests are incredibly hard but his super curve helped me to get a B in the class. I learned to love this class but pushed myself very hard
Grade based 100% on tests. Super hard test but an awesome curve
Grades are based 100% on exams. They are super hard but he has an awesome curve.
Took his class at UVU and I absolutely loved it! He's super funny and makes jokes continuously while still staying on topic. His tests are crazy hard but his "super curve" saved my butt! I would defiantly take any class from him again
His lectures are mandatory to go to and are extremely hard to follow. I never had any idea of what I would be tested on because he went on so many tangents. He is a nice person but avoid taking D&C from him. EXTREMELY confusing lectures make for impossible tests.
Latimer is the man! His lectures are super funny, and if you take good notes, then you should be fine for the tests. Just make sure you know the material because the tests ARE hard! He gives a good extra credit opportunity, and he'll be flexible. Just note that he is not good at responding to e-mails.
Latimer was the type of professor I expected to have going into freshman year. He lectured the whole class and your grade was based on tests. That being said, he was excellent. I loved his lectures and they were well made and funny. The tests are terrible but, he grades on a massive curve, our first exam was 58%+ an A!
This professor is funny but i haven't learned a darn thing from this man
Get ready for the hardest most confusing tests of your life. Wish I could give you tips for them but afterwards I felt like there was nothing more I could've studied the questions were just worded super weird and informal. God bless the super curve though! Do the extra credit!!! You won't know your grade until the end. He's funny thats biggest plus
If you love films, TAKE LATIMER. He's extremely helpful. Willing to stay after class to help you. His lectures are deep, and full of interesting information, film clips, and quirky things to help you remember concepts. His tests are HARD. But if you study really well, you'll do okay. Plus, he has a literal SUPER CURVE. LOVE HIS CLASS! He's amazing.
Prof. Latimer is awesome! We even watched movies for homework... how awesome is that? I learned a lot from his class, especially about different perspectives of history, and how those are influenced by our culture and other factors. Super interesting, funny guy, great class. Easy? No way! Tests were really tough, but he does use a mean SUPER curve.
His tests are probably the most difficult i've ever had in college. He speaks very fast, and covers far more material than should be required for a religion class. As a human, I liked him. He was very tolerant, and explained things in an interesting way. So its a toss up, he grades hard and requires a lot of work. But the class is interesting.
Take Latimer before Harvard picks him up. 2.5 hr classes flew by. You won't find a teacher who uses media more effectively. Straightforward and inspiring class. Universities need more non-PC, honest professors like Latimer. Offers tons of extra credit plus a super curve. Latimer is the way to go for AH100 no doubt about it.
He is by far one of the greatest teachers I have had because he is a teacher first. His 2.5 hour lectures flew by and he kept my attention the entire time, which is not an easy feat especially in a history class. No one uses media better than him. However, his one dark spot are his tests. They are very challenging because they are tricky in wording
Professor Latimer was a good guy, but by far my least favorite professor I have had. Your grade is based only on test performance and extra credit. Might still be impossible to get an A on his tests even with open book/open notes. His lectures are FAST and quite hard to follow. Offers extra credit too, about a full grades worth.
Latimer is the most interesting and intelligent professor I've ever had. I took AmHer & World Rel. w/ him; they were my two favorite classes at BYU. Informative & entertaining lectures. You can get an A if you go to class, take good concept notes, & study for exams - he doesn't do handouts for lazy students. But he'll make you a better person.
Latimer is a brilliant and hilarious teacher who will inspire you. If you bomb his tests, it's because you skipped out or didn't study enough, and even then, he will rescue you with Super Curve. He expects you to know ALL of the material from the lectures and the homework, including docs. Don't complain about the tests if you don't do all the work.
Amazing teacher. Very prepared, entertaining and funny. You will never be bored in his lectures. You will have a lot of videos to watch and reading to do. Only grades are tests and sometimes a paper. You must go to class that is when all of the material is taught!!! You will be asked to think broadly.
Extremely entertaining! You wont fall asleep in his class! His lectures are awesome because he uses current events, short film clips, and object lessons to help you remember each principle. The only problem I had is that he talks super fast. He grades on a very generous curve. I would highly recommend reading the chapter before class!
I took Professor Latimer's class Fall 2016 and it was my hardest class. The only thing on your grade is tests and his tests were super hard. He grades on a curve but Canvas doesn't show the curved scores so I never knew exactly how i was doing in his class. PowerPoints on canvas but they don't have everything he discusses in class so go to class.
Latimer was an amazing professor. His lectures were always fun and interesting. Taking notes is a must, as well as reading the textbook. He really only grades tests and quizzes, so if you study for them you'll do fine.
I have a rough time following his lectures. He does not publish a class schedule but will make online announcements about chapter readings 2 days before the next class. Lack of assignments leaves me in the dark about what I am supposed to be gleaning from lectures and readings. Online organization is messy and riddled with his proprietary terms.
I loved this class! Professor Latimer was so inspirational and fun. He makes the 2 hour class go by very quickly. Take notes and make sure you pay attention to the lectures. The tests are literally impossible. I would spend 8 hours studying and could barely get a 60%. Thank the maker for the Super Curve.
I honestly do not understand why Latimer does not have better reviews. This class is sooo worth the drive to SLC. Study hard for the tests, and super curve will cover the rest! You might feel like you bombed the tests, but then with super curve, you can still manage to get an A. Class is long, but entertaining! Definitely worth the drive to SLC!
If you're looking for an easy A, don't take this class. It's way hard. Hardest tests I've ever taken. That being said, he has a big curve at the end, as well as big extra credit opportunities. Didn't touch the textbook - tests are lecture heavy. If you're chill with getting an A- or B+ then this is an pretty easy way to get AHTG out of the way
Some students need A's in every class, others just want to get there GE's done. If you are the first, then stay away. Take AHTG at BYU, read 100's of pages, do tons of work , and walk a way with your A. If you're cool with an A- or a B then take Lattimer! You'll enjoy every class, watch cool videos, do decent on tests, and pray for the super curve.
He's a hilarious teacher, makes class super interesting, and makes fun of himself a lot. However, he was the toughest teacher I have EVER had. Even with the "super curve", I got a C. My advice: read the darn textbook (also make sure it's the right edition), study, talk to him about what you don't understand, study, do the extra credit, and study.
For a 2 & 1/2 hour night class he kept interest pretty well for a lecture. Like good laughs & all. But he talks @the speed of light. He grades about concepts rather than memorizing names & dates. But doesnt thoroughly explain the concepts for understanding. Bombed tests & studied like a maniac. theres a curve. pretty chill for an AH class tho tbh
Brett Latimer, (like his distant relative burned at the stake - Hugh Latimer) is a voice out of the midst crying out from atop the walls trying to warn us mushy minded kids about what is happening to our country and inalienable rights, as we take our country for granted, and assume it will always be the same as it was for our parents. Well its not
Latimer is by far the best professor I have ever had. His lectures are fascinating, and he is hysterical. He teaches material differently from any other AH teacher you'll have, so if you don't attend the lectures, you will fail. His lessons go beyond names and dates, and emphasize important, useful ideas. Grade curve is insanely helpful.
You will probably bomb a test or two but his curves are legendary. A very, very great professor. He does care a lot about his students and understands how hard this class is. As far as AH goes, this is the class to take, especially if it's in Salt Lake. He's so funny and I learned so much from this class about the world. Take him!
Hes a great Professor! Hes funny and definitely knows how to engage his students. He helped me a lot in passing, and Im sure if you talk to him you can figure something out. Show that you care. Like any profesor if you come to class they are more willing to help you out.
I loved Prof. Latimer's class. For AHTG, he is the teacher to take it from. I'm serious when I say I was really sad when the semester ended. His classes were always engaging, thought provoking, and funny. It is decently hard, but I've seen much harder. He is also very understanding to our load and tries to lighten it up if he feels its too much.
Tests are insanely hard
Probably the best teacher I have ever had. Ive never felt more informed about countrys history and economic system. Latimer is straightforward and intelligent and I was dying throughout the lectures of laughter. The tests are extremely difficult but if you study you will do well. The answers are always there for you (multiple choice, matching).
American Heritage with Professor Latimer was the best decision I've made. I took this class over the summer so it was highly condensed, but he was so amazing at teaching the material especially since the class was all online. He made the 2 1/2 hour lectures fun and engaging. Tests were HARD but the curve was awesome. Highly Recommend.
I know he looks hard but, trust me, you need to take the class from him. Definitely worth taking in the Spring/Summer. Just take notes on every video he shows in and out of class!
HILARIOUS! This is the funniest teacher I have EVER met. He made jokes all the time and was just hilarious. He had wonderful curves and did a great job giving us chances for extra credit and help. Great teacher!
Honestly my favorite professor I've ever had at BYU. His tests are hard but he curves everything so as long as you study you'll do fine. He is absolutely hilarious, making the class so much fun. He is amazing at teaching and makes the concepts super easy to understand. Best class ever.
He is the best choice for American Heritage. No assignments (quizzes, papers) except for pre class readings and videos. There is an extra credit opportunity. The tests are really hard, pay attention to what he says. He curves it, so as long as you stay around the average you will be fine. Best AHTG class if you dont want to do that much work.
I LOVED this class. I was prepared to take a horrible class over Zoom but I loved this class more than my in-person class. Professor Latimer is amazing. He shares opposing opinions on issues and allows students to present their opinions. He isn't afraid to challenge their opinion and make them think. He is just so freaking great. Highly recommend!
Definitely my favorite professor I've had here at BYU. Prof Latimer is hilarious and makes lectures very entertaining. You learn a lot in this class. This class is test heavy, but he grades on a curve, which helps a lot. For taking American Heritage, Latimer is the best professor you are going to find.
Professor Latimer is the best!! He has very fun and interesting lectures that will keep you awake the entire time. He is also very lenient when you go to him with problems. He also has this thing called a super curve, so basically as long as you work hard in his class you will succeed.
Professor Latimer is a great professor and understands the importance of a grade. You'll do great if you show up, pay attention, and do the prior assignments. I will say, he is tough to understand sometimes and it can be difficult to see the bigger picture in his lessons.
Latimer is hilarious, lectures are long but he makes them enjoyable. I took the class in Salt Lake expecting it to be easier than the ones in Provo, didn't find that to be true. Tests are the only things he grades on, and they are so hard. He tests about different analogies no other professor has ever taught. Do the extra credit!
This class is hard. BUT he is an understanding professor, and theres a supercurve so that most people get a B. You'll pass his class, and you'll learn A LOT of things that are very applicable to today. It's useful information. Lectures are packed with information but also very entertaining, he's a funny guy. Super understanding as well.
A must see and hear. Awesome
Very very conservative and repeatedly inserts his own politics into class. Told us all we should go watch 2000 Mules. Required us to watch at least five PragerU vids a week. Claimed liberals advocate for post birth abortions as well as used countless other Fox News type talking points. Should not be a professor if his goal is indoctrination
Prof. Latimer is hilarious. Lectures were very entertaining. You will laugh. Definitely best AHTG option at BYU. No homework/papers, just readings and videos. The tests are REALLY difficult though. Latimer makes a decent grade accessible through curving the tests and offering a lot of extra credit. You can tell he loves his job and students.
