Mr. Swanlund is a great teacher! Very Passionate, and expects alot out of you. Go to class, and you'll be fine!
If you want to get the most out of your education, or not, this is the Eng101teacher for you. He is super helpful, and very clear, and best English teacher I ever had in my life. I used to hate English, he opens a whole new world of English to students. A must take teacher, if you are attending CSUF.
Great teacher! Class is full of analysis, so it brings out a new world within English. Very easy class if you participate. No books necessary! I've never had a cooler English teacher in my life. Just know that he is a strict teacher, but very chill guy.
Definitely take English with this awesome person. He made class a lot of fun and interesting. It will be all about you, so don't be boring! Just take this class, and you won't be sorry as long as you do the work.
Mr. Swanlund has got to be the best 101 English teacher on campus. He really cares about all his students and makes english interesting. Just show up to class, participate, and answer all his questions to the class when he asks if you understand or not, otherwise he'll start clapping his hands for an answer. Overall, highly recommended professor.
Best teacher ever!!! He's so into his teachings its insane but it makes the class fun...he's never a meanie and is really helpfull...I strongly reccomend taking him. Not an easy A though
He is definitely a great professor. As long as you do all of the work, try hard, and attend class, it is possible to get an A.
this teacher made english interesting. The only class i looked forward to. I definately recommend taking him. Hes not an easy grader though, because he actually makes you learn.
He's a really good teacher and expects a lot from his students.
GREAT professor! Start off your first year at CSUF with the best English 101 teacher around. He's funny, HELPFUL, very nice, and.... very attractive. He looks like Thor :)
Good teacher. Very helpful. Very handsome as well.
GOOD TEACHER... He is a bit hard on following the MLA formats and all. He makes you stay throughout the whole time. If your taking his night class he does stay a little bit longer at times. YOU NEVER LEAVE EARLY. He is helpful nice and super funny. Makes you laugh and likes to make you think. HE IS HOT TOO ;)
My favorite teacher this semester. He was very helpful, and I learned a lot from him. His class was by far the most fun class I had this past semester. Definitely not an easy A. He makes you work for your grades. I strongly recommend his class to anyone taking English 101.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Best ENGL101 professor and his teachings are fun and he can be funny at times... Overall his class was one that I actually looked forward to going to :) He really makes you learn and he has taught me how to improve my writing greatly. Take him as your ENGL101 professor
I feel like he did not explain things clearly. Most assignments were given online and sometimes it was put up the day before it was due. Be sure you know all material given to you because he gives many pop quizzes. He is a pretty fun teacher. I guess I just didn't have as good of a connection with him as everyone else.
Nice guy. Passionate about the subject. Subjective grading. Fluctuating value given to assignments, like he changes his mind through the semester about the weighted value of each assignment. Lots of pop quizzes. People tend to like him a lot. I learned a lot, but he LAGS on posting grades and dodges questions regarding points and grades
As long as you participate and do well on your work, you should do fine in the class. If you're having trouble, he is open to helping students out during his office hours. I had a really good learning experience with him. The only downside is that he is attractive, and I would get a little distracted during lecture sometimes.
If you're a COMM major, you should try your best to get into his class. His lessons tie in with a lot of the teachings from mass communications and the like. He also genuinely cares about his students, so that's a nice bonus. As long as you actually show up and try in the class, you'll get a passing grade. Make sure to ask for help if you need it!
I would highly recommend this teacher because not only is he fun but you really learn a lot. It's true that he grades hard and that some assignments are shown the day before its due but that just shows that you always have to be on a lookout and be prepared. Overall, he's a GREAT teacher and genuinely cares for the students.
I think he is a terrible professor. He is condescending and makes malicious comments during class. He demands that his students participate, and then when I tried to talk, he just made me feel stupid. His grading is unreasonable. You read and write essay responses on a nightly basis. His comments on essays are unhelpful and rude.
Do not take him for English. When I talk to my friends in other classes, they never have as much work as I have. I struggled in his class.
We had to write journals that required critical thinking every night. This class was honestly an easy A, but i worked hard and earned it. Despite how hard the class was, i think he was a great teacher, very insightful and seems to genuinely care for our future. He's young with a good sense of humor. would recommend him!
I would seriously recommend this class to anyone who is serious about improving their writing. Ultimately, that's what I got out of it. There were a lot of writing and critical thinking assignments, but they ended up really helping me with writing assignments in my later classes. Mr. Swanlund is also really helpful, you just need to ask for it.
He gives a decent amount of work, but none of it is too difficult. You must try hard in this class and attend. But I highly recommend it. He is ALWAYS willing to help through email or office hours. He's also kind of funny.
We have to turn in a journal every time there is class. So there is definitely homework. Participation is required to get a good grade. There's 3 at home essays and 2 in class essay. He's also kinda funny.
He is very nice and funny. willing to help students. You will have a lot of homework and some pop quizzes. You have to study very hard to achieve your grade. No pain no grain is true on his class
Do not take this class. He tries really hard to be the cool teacher and succeeds. But when push comes to shove, he is completely unhelpful. All the assignments he gives are really hard and he grades very difficult. You will try your absolute hardest and probably end up barely passing.
Mr. Swanlund was very helpful, he helped me with my essays during his office hours every time an essay was due and i got an A on all of them. He can be Anal about formatting your paper the right way. Also make sure you follow directions, even to the smallest things you might blow off like reading the syllabus when he asks you, he will hide clues GL
He is very helpful, even though I didn't pass, I still like him, very nice and funny, always be there for his students
His name is amazing. I wish he would have gone by Brewster, I could have done so much with that name. He's a great teacher, very odd guy, into his craft. Takes attendance, in class activities, uses titanium not books, grades fairly, and is always clear about due dates and dets. Midterm/final do require studying- intelligent guesses only go so far.
He is very outgoing and funny, although he does have a serious side. He is always willing to help, just email him or go to office hours. He does try to be understanding, but he grades a bit harsh, so don't try to rush an essay on something last minute. Just make sure you go to class and follow instructions and you should pass.
He is such a mean and unhelpful teacher. He expects you to be an amazing college student and doesn't clarify what he is looking for in your work. He expects you to learn everything for homework and he rambles about stories in class. He is a hard grader to students because he never taught you what you were supposed to know. He gives out useless quiz
He is a hard grader but he will help you. I loved this class! We choose the essay prompts and gives us a week to write one essay. Most fun English class!!
He is very rude, judgmental and curses when it is not necessary. It is hard to respect this teacher when he is so rude and arrogant. He gives a lot of homework that is not useful. I personally did not learn anything in this class that I did not already know. If you ask a question he thinks is stupid, get ready to be made fun of during class!
He a really great teacher he funny and really cool and yes even though i didnt pass he class he was helpful and always there to help students but you have to ask for help too i would definitively take this class again.
Professor Swanlund is an extremely helpful professor! He always tries to make you think outside of the box and wants to help you succeed. He makes you challenge yourself and I really enjoyed this class!
Swanlund is by far one of my favorite professors on CSUF. He is a tough grader, and does not assign any extra credit. If you don't go to him for revisions, or go to the writing center do not expect an A in the class. He grades papers based on the rubric, so if you cover everything on there you should be fine. He has cool exercises so go to class.
Bruce is super chill. Put all readings online so we didn't have to buy them. Great professor really respected and cares about his students.
It took me about a half a semester to get used to the way Professor Swanlund runs his class. He is funny but also ruthless in a way, especially with online deadlines. Pop quizzes were grade killers because there's no way to prepare for them. They're really on random stuff. Read directions thoroughly. The class content was actually very interesting.
He is a hilarious professor that can make a lecture about commas interesting. However, there is a ton of work in the class and there will be pop quizzes! Do all your work and make sure not to fall behind or it will cost you.
Not fun, he tries hard to be funny , gives so much work, pretty rude. do not take. gives so many pointless assaignments
Honestly a very bad teacher. He always gives us a huge packet on something he never taught us on and expects us to learn the material by next class. Assign an essay that was due over break and gives 0 points if you submit it late. To strict on grading and to much homework for a GE class. Never take this professor 0/10 hotness.
Great teacher! Go to his office hours and ask for help! Your grade depends on how hard you work.
Professor Swanlund was cool. He was really funny. when he says to read the syllabus on the first day, do it. and read it that night bc there's an assignment that goes with it. You have to write 3 essays out of class & 2 in class. It's great bc you don't have to buy a textbook. Do what he says & check titanium after every class & you'll pass.
Look a lot of his students has many different opinions. when I took his class at English 301 for my required course, I figure that he was unpredictable. He's a tough grader on the first essay, second essay and the third. The writing center is mandatory and they did not help me at all. he is very approachable and answer emails.
Currently taking his class and all I can say is big mistake. If you like pop quizzes and unknown due dates, I highly recommend him for you. That's what you get. Every time I have the class I feel anxious and dread going. He will give you homework every day and when he doesn't you will feel like you forgot to do something. Don't take his class!!!
TAKE HIM! He truly cares about his students and is usually willing to help. If you like dark humor then you'll have fun in his class. Besides he's adorable and I wish I could take many more classes with him.
This class doesn't require a textbook, he has his own document to save you money :) His work although is very tedious, if you don't fulfill one requirement from the prompt he will take off points, so just make sure you follow ALL instructions. He makes assignments fun and will 10/10 take him again given the opportunity.
Should have read the reviews before picking the class. A lot of assignments that aren't related to what we are learning. He gives a lot of pop quizzes and will give you homework almost every day. On the other hand, he is funny and doesn't require a textbook. But I advise picking another ENG101 professor
RUN TITAN RUNNN!! Super rude and won't make any exceptions. Too much work for a 101, the work doesn't even make sense with the course if you wanna actually learn take another professor. This isn't easy either, I worked hard still got a bad grade. Makes you memorize 50 fallacies. Don't do it dude.
too much work, daily hw assignents, harddd grader , hardest class ive ever took
Not to be questioned, Mr. Swanlund is an inspirational professor. I love his lectures and activities, which truly meet college standards. The only problem is he is tough at grading. Follow up all his requirements and you will be good.
Amazing professor with high expectations. Swanlund showed relentlessly day in and day out that he cared for the subject of English and was always there for his students. His humor made the class great and his passion translates to him students. Overall amazing person put in the work and you should be fine in the class.
He himself is a funny professor and brings cool topics to the table with the journals he gives EVERY CLASS. Breaks down essays that can make it easier or harder at the end. Very picky grader. LOTS of HOMEWORK. Overwhelming workload with other classes.
If you really struggle with English I advise a different profesor, although Swanlund will make you become a better writer he is a very tough and picky grader. Attendance is apart of your grade, so go to class because you cant make anything up & theres a lot of assignments. Quick to email you back, likes to see progress. Try hard and youll be ok!
Professor Swanlund knows a lot about English, especially the writing process. Although we had so many homework assignments throughout the semester, I learned a lot from his class. He does grade hard; however, he gives a lot of feedback that you could use for future endeavors. Overall, great class and would take again.
He might be intimidating at first but just don't be afraid to talk to him and ask questions. His class is not hard at all, he cares about what you write and gives you as much feedback to make your paper better and then, in turn, he gives you a better grade. He is a really cool professor and hw is super easy so don't worry. TAKE HIM it's NOT BAD
Lots of learning on your own, definitely dont expect to be given anything in this class you have to work for it. Essays are 1 after another and he does give quiet a bit of homework on top of that, so beware of that. He can be pretty funny, if you like dark humor. It was an okay class overall...
First off, this professor is a very tough grader. And I mean TOUGH. Good luck trying to pass his tests because they are hard. He does have a funny personality but this does not make up for the immense amount of stress his homework load puts you through. Overall, I would get a different professor when trying to take this class.
I could understand how this might be a great professor for those who like English courses, but I really recommend taking another professor if you can. He posts assignments and doesn't talk about them so you can figure out on your own. He is also a very tough grader and if you are just trying to pass for G.E. do yourself a favor, don't take him.
There are about 2-3 assignments due every week. He's a really tough grader when it comes to the weekly journal, essays, and other assignments. There's a large load of work ( outline, rough draft, peer review, workshops) and once you're done with one essay, you're starting the next. I learned a lot but and he's an approachable guy, but very strict.
The coursework is heavy considering that it is a G.E. class. The syllabus gives you a glimpse of how much you're going to read, it was 7 pages long double sided. He is incredibly inconsistent with grading and you have to go on an investigation to find the first due date for the assignment.
Unnecessary amount of work. Can become a really stressful class. Essays are a really long process and everything is graded, from outline to first draft to your final draft etc. Like I said the workload is heavy, soooo many journals! I didnt think he could be that bad, but now Id definitely recommend you AVOID this Professor. Take anyone else!
For a GE class that is unrelated to my own major, this was my hardest class. During a pandemic, he expects you to have enough time to do all of the assignments he gives every week. For those that are full-time students, it definitely piles on top of other classes. However, he is easy to reach out to if you need help.
Papers, papers, and more papers. This class was work heavy considering it was a normal G.E. course. He is a cool guy, don't get me wrong. Though this class will really push you to your limits and keep you on your toes. The textbook is provided by him in a document so he saves you $. Make sure to read EVERYTHING he posts on canvas or you'll fail.
Professor Swanlund overall is a great instructor. He has high expectations for his students and wants them to be great in their writing. His deadlines/due dates for his papers come quickly as he does not want students to procrastinate writing essays until the last night. His grading is understandable and his feedback is good as well.
Do not take this class. If there is anything I can ever recommend to anyone EVER, it is DO NOT take this class. If you mess up one thing with the MLA formatting, you will fail. Will tell you to keep revising your essays, and after you have revised it 3 times, will still fail you. Incredibly tough grader for honestly no reason. Don't do it.
Mr. Swanlund is a funny guy, and he can be somewhat entertaining during class. However, he gives way too much homework for a class that's supposed to be a GE. He is also a VERY picky grader, and does not have any mercy when it comes to formatting errors.
Overall he's a decent teacher with a funny personality. I personally wouldn't take it again because I felt like the quality of my papers suffered because we had to do them in such a short period of time. But, if you don't have a busy schedule otherwise, he's a great choice because he gives good feedback.
He's a funny guy if you enjoy his dry humor, and he's very passionate about whats he teaching. It's a challenging class if you're not a strong writer already. ALOT of homework, I was doing more work for this class than for my major required courses.
Do not take this professor. He is a tough grader. He never gives one more attempt for an assignment. And also his assignments are really difficult. And he is really picky grader. If you are not good at writing an essay, and if you care about your GPA, do not not take him.
If anyone is planning to take ENGL301 whether its for GE or your major, DO NOT choose this professor! Hes nice and has a great sense of humor, but he is a VERY picky grader and the assignments are ridiculous.
These reviews are far off. You can't expect an upper div course to not require some work. His homework is SO easy. Quizzes are online which is nice, also very EASY. You can correct each essay for up to 13 extra credit points. Your presentation will be recorded on video so he saves you the stress of doing it in person. Barely assigns readings. FAIR.
Mr. Swanlund is an amazing professor and I enjoyed our time together thoroughly, I would defiantly take him again next semester if I had the opportunity, - Grace
Condescending. Directions: vague, contradicting, & so are due dates. Penalizes alot of pts on small details. Presentations due during spring break. no,did not give us more than a weeks notice. Not helpful, seems like he wants u to fail rather than reply to his emails when you're reaching out for Q's. total pts not set in syllabus. adds irrelevant
Don't take this class, he's a picky grader. He assigns quizzes that are 10 question but makes you watch an hour long lecture for the quiz. Also he his timeline for essays, rough drafts, and research are crazy with the amount of homework he adds with it. If you have to take this class save yourself the countless headaches and stress.
Do not take this prof. He is rude, makes people feel dumb, he puts down women, saying they should be in the kitchen, cleaning, or cooking. He is all about stereotypes and if you try to disagree with him he will get mad at you and start a big argument in-front of the whole class. does not actually go over his slides and will tell you to go over them
He's pretty cool and willing to help if you email him but grading is something else. You write three big papers throughout the course, one where you can pick the topic. He is very very picky in outlines and how your answers in discussion posts should be. Assigns the papers within a week after the previous is submitted, leaving no rest.
He's not very caring or considerate for students time and mental state. Made me question about my writing abilities and felt illiterate in his class. He picks and chooses on his grading, he claims he's straightforward for the grading, but hes not!! My mental state dropped significantly in this class for how critical he is.
He is a VERY tough grader. Sometimes he would expect you to get everything PERFECT and would criticize all essays. He would also make the assignments all due the same or the next day which is very overwhelming. If you have a passion for reading and writing, I recommend getting another professor.
He does make class engaging and is very passionate but he is super picky when it comes to grading so keep that in mind. Not a terrible professor but many of his comments just seem nit-picky and he doesn't clarify. I once asked for feedback in person on my essay format, corrected the issue with him, and still got marked down for it regardless.
He loves grammar so you better hope you know how to read/write proper English, otherwise he'll mark you points for the smallest things. This sentence is probably making his eye twitch if it's incorrect. I don't have it out for the guy, but save yourself the time and take someone else. He's very punctual and likes things his way.
DON'T DO IT. Take someone else, his amount of work is ridiculous. Unless you're MAJORING in English STAY AWAY. Tons of quizzes (easy), 5 min video presentation on the 2nd essay (during spring break). LOTS of work. NOT the best idea when you are full time.
so on a personal level i dont like how he teaches but you know what you have to do he can be a tough grader
I would not recommend this teacher. He low-key was rude when I had to miss when I traveled for soccer. He assigns so many assignments that are due the next day basically. No late submissions. grades so hard for no reason.
Honestly he's really ruthless on his feedback from his essays, it kinda makes you feel bad. 3 essays , you get enough time to complete them, weekly discussion boards. don't recommend.
very picky grader and picky with his feedback
