He is an alright teacher but will look at kinda crazy if don't get it right away. He made me feel real stupid.
Tough teacher, but very good. Tests are very difficult, but you learn a lot. Loves what he does, answers any questions
ughh, chemistry is bad enough, even worse when the teacher is horrible. stay away!
Mr. Abela is a bright man and also has a unique talent for explaining something multiple ways to ensure one comprehends. He is very compasionate with his students and is willing to go the extra mile to help. He is also passionate about chemistry and will do just about any experiment to illustrate what he is lecturing on. Great Teacher!!
Good teacher and willing to help, but he knows the material naturally and doesn't understand the student who doesn't "get it" right away. Fun class, great interaction, very difficult if math isn't your thing.
I really liked Mr. Abela's chemistry class, it was interesting and informative and the the labs were a lot of fun (we got to see a gummy bear dance :-D). The tests are easy enough if you study before and the homeworks easy and oddly fun. He's also a very nice guy and very helpful when you don't understand something.
The subject can be difficult for those who aren't good at math, but otherwise, he is a good instructor. He can be fast paced and he's too smart for his own good, so it reflects in his teaching style. He has a sense of arrogance about him, but he's very approachable and willing to help if you can get past it. Hes some what of a smart a$$,but its OK.
Brian is a very cool teacher and he sure does try his best to be in the same level with his students. if you slack off then you will do bad. he is not a bad teacher and he has some humor to him. there are times that if you ask him questions he will look at you blankly as if you are a dummy but so what he still helps you out.
he's a great instructor who's so smart it's hot. for you ladies interested in smart guys, bring an extra pair of panties. his class is really interesting and great. i love looking at him and listening to him.
Great teacher!
Great professor! clear on the study materials. If you study the notes and do the homeworks, you will do good on the test.
I think he is great. Hes very helpful and funny. He is very smart which can be intemidating . But i think the class is pretty cool. And it always help when the teacher is easy on the eyes.
If you are a hot girl/lady, i would advise you to take this class because this instructor seems to like to help ladies. He's kinda hard but if you pay attention and spend the time necessary to study, you do good. He's not such a good helper and is very arrogant. likes sceince but doesnt care if other want to learn it much.
I thought he was a great professor and the information was very easy to understand. Great to have a teach that likes science as much as I do
Tough class, this guy expects you to be a master at pretty much everything he says. He is super smart and expects you to catch on to everything right away. Hes hot and cold, he?ll be really nice and humorous one day and kind of a jerk the other. His test are really hard and labs are confusing. Dont really recommend it, but its not terrible. STUDY
I loved this class. Brian has a great sense of humor that made even the more boring parts of the curriculum bearable, and he is always willing to give extra help if needed. If you have trouble on the tests just drink BRONDO, it will make you WIN at TESTS, BRONDO it's what chem students CRAVE!!!!!
This subject can be hard to completely understand at times, but Mr. Abela will take all the time you need in order to help you succeed. This class is hard, with the tests being 10 questions each, completely free response, but if you are willing to study, you should do fine. He also grades on a curve, which is a very good thing. Highly recommend!
study, and work hard, and he'll give you the credit which you learned. if you dont pay attention then you wont do well
just practice what you learned and you'll do fine. he is not a bad teacher he just wants you to do well
amazing instructor, you should try him
Hard to grasp, although he expects it to be easy. But he helps u if u ask. Pretty good
Very nice guy, the class itself was tough for me, but he try's to make sure your understanding by explaining it a few different ways, easy to talk to and get along with.
He can be a nice guy, but sometimes when you ask for help he gets mad that you dont understand, and can make you feel really stupid. Needs more patience
Copy everything he writes on the board, make flash cards off of his power points, take your time on labs-they may save your behind. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS!!!. Start memorizing your polyatomic ions the first week. Do this and you will pass.
His class was super hard. He made his labs difficult to understand and perform. he also graded labs harshly. When you asked him a question, he tries to make you look stupid in front of the entire class and then gives a smug look like he's proud of doing it. I am taking chemistry at a university now and am doing way better. Don't take him!
He's easy to talk to, grades on a curve and helpful. I have heard that he gets impatient if you don't get it right away. Definitely do ALL the labs and take notes - download the power points too! His interest in the subject made me want to become a science teacher myself!
Mr. Abela is very willing to help his students succeed and will certainly take the time to help you understand things. Be aware though, that his tests are very difficult and each question is multifaceted. If you are mathematically minded, it shouldn't be too bad.
Doesn't explain well when you ask for extra help he doesn't give it. He tells you to drop if you don't understand.
Take him but be prepared to do all the labs. Pay attention to ALL the slides. Don't be fooled by the slides he skips because he might test you from it. DO ALL THE LABS AND PAY ATTENTION TO LECTURES AND SLIDES. Pay attention during reviews and be prepared to work in a study group and to pull all nighters. Other than that he is AMAZING!:)
Hard teacher but its college people gotta study.
Tough class. Gets annoyed when students don't understand his lectures. I witnessed him raising his voice just because the student couldn't understand what he was talking about. I personally think someone else is grading them,(students). We had a group of 5 with the same answers but yet different grades. Happened throughout the semester.
If you have the slightest interest in chemistry, his class will be amazing. He knows the material and will help students, but don't expect him to teach you components of the class that should have been mastered in the pre requisite courses such as algebra.
Mr. Abela is awesome!! I read all the negative feedback and was super leery going into his class. If you haven't taken Chemistry before, I HIGHLY suggest you know what you are getting into before you take the class. He is super hilarious and is pretty open. Be prepared to laugh. Learn your polyatomic ions now, you WILL need them all semester.
Amazing class! He is really goofy! get a study group in lab! Each chapter and test relates to the next one so make sure you remember everything! All you need are the powerpoints! As someone said before, write down everything he writes! study everyday so you don't get behind. Do the practice questions, they help a lot but they aren't on the test.
Make sure you take notes, print out the power points so you can fill in the information because the power points are pretty blank. Listen to everything he says write down what he writes down on the test he goes by his definition. He gets side track sometimes but he's a funny guy. Lastly DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS they help a little.
He is an amazing professor! Chemistry is a tough subject to begin with so getting an A is hard work. I took the summer class so it was pretty intense, but if you show up everyday, take good notes, and just try your hardest, you can pass this class with at least a B. He is pretty straight up and some students don't like that.
I am taking him for summer right now and well yes, its a lot of info in such a short time. you have 3 tests and 1 final. He curves his tests so thats good and he ,ight get a little frustrated sometimes when a student doesnt understand , but he is more nice of a guy than anything else. His lectures are good and if you take him make sure to STUDY!!!
Abela has several students who have taken his class returning to retake the same class because they failed. Someone who took the class with me asked for help at one point and he told them they will have to face the fact that they will need to retake the class. His online powerpoints are completely blank, meaning if you miss the lecture, RIP.
Be prepared to work for your grade. You need to review the lectures / PowerPoint. Do the practice problems. And if you dedicate the time to study and memorize what he asks of you then you can easily pass the class. He is not an easy professor but he is readily available if you have any questions with lecture or lab.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. The tests are about 10 questions long and are all free response. The labs will not save your grade you have to do well on the tests to get a good grade. This class requires a lot of your time so don't plan on taking a lot of hard classes at the same time. He is funny and laid back but is a hard grader.
Having had to take 1A twice, Mr. Abela presents a difficult class that demands discipline from students in order to succeed. It is essential to practice concepts and methods for calculations shown in lecture slides. He has a reputation for being a bit impatient, but with a casual demeanor. However, lessons learnt will prove invaluable later on.
He is very knowledgeable and respectable. He's funny, and witty. Although attendance is not a requirement, I suggest you do not miss one class as it will set you back quite a bit. Study and perfect your polyatomic ions, nomenclature, and math. If you didn't do well in the pre-req math, you'll struggle in this class.
Mr. Abela is such a great teacher! Yes the class is difficult because of the subject but he takes his time to explain the lectures and labs. If you don't understand something, he'll pull up a chair and teach you one on one. Very patient. He also has a great sense of humor. Just be ready to study, study, study. If you don't try, he has no sympathy
This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. I did not feel prepared for what was on the tests whatsoever. He does not make sure you understand the material and continues on the lectures no matter if you understand or not. The tests were graded on a curve but throughout the whole pool of chem 2a not just my classroom.
Didnt like his class at all. When myself and other students would ask for extra help after class he would seem so annoyed to assist us. And if he would try to explain it again and you wouldnt understand, he would get very angry and upset with you. He expects you to learn the material at that point and time. I had to drop it.
It's honestly the worst professor ever. He hardly explains anything throughly. What he lectures or put on his power points are NOT even really on the dang exam or tests! Worst professor I have ever took. If I would have known he was this horrible I would have went somewhere else to actually learn! The SI is awesome because she explains clearly!
This professor is not the best at instructing but he is far from incompetent. What future students need to know is that this class will likely require them to take time and effort into learning outside the classroom and to ask help from the professor and supplemental aide. This class should be approached with an impassioned and conscientious mind!
Great guy, really funny, and doesnt keep class boring. tough grader. Extremely precise in his answers, for instance I once got the answer as 9.0% and the answer was 9.01%.Pay attention to ALL the small details and when you get home after lecturing on a chapter start the corresponding practice problems. Seriously dont miss class.
I took this class last semester so my review will be incomplete, but I do remember that it was very clear what I had to do to get an A. Clear instructions, great lectures; pay attention and study a lot. The homework he gives and practice problems/guides were key to success, do those and you'll get an A. student aid also provided, utilize tools.
Lectures are good but passing these tests seem impossible. This is 100% a math class and the tests are mostly word problems. I knew and understood the "practice problems" material very well yet didn't find them helpful for the tests AT ALL. Many of my classmates had taken the same class/instructor before and failed their first time.
I took Mr. Abela this summer 2018. I really liked him. He made Chem seem easy. If you pay attention and do all your work, you should not have a problem. I had an awesome lab partner, which made my life so much easier. I did not do well on my first test and that hurt my overall grade.
Even though I received an A in this class, it was my least favorite class I've ever taken. The instructor seems to expect everyone to be a chemist before even taking the course. I do not recommend this instructor. Tests are insanely hard. Be prepared. He sometimes has days where he's in a good mood and class isn't too too bad.
funny guy, easy pass, just study lul
This is not an easy class. The tests are pretty hard, there is a "none of the above" option on all questions. Be prepared to study a lot for this class. Lectures weren't that helpful other than the math problem explanations. Make sure to look over the practice problems he gives and definitely study the slides. Don't buy the book.
Lectures that are on stuff we arent learning yet. Expects you to already know chemistry and will talk down to you like you are dumb if you dont. Didnt seem to like answering questions. Talking about Star Wars instead of the stuff we desperately needed to learn. I dropped. I wasnt going to get an F on my transcripts. Went to COS and passed.
What makes this professor stand out is how he handles a question. This is the first class I ever withdrew from. That alone exemplifies how bad a teacher he is! Hard teachers can be great ones, but his temper is just plain bad! If you take him, pay attention to how he handles questions. Dont be fooled by his smile. Avoid this man!
Lectures are not mandatory attendance but labs are and his lectures trail off a lot into other things. He got impatient when my group had questions and was short but with other students he would take the time and give thorough explanations. He's not a bad teacher but with the difficulty level of coursework I wish he was more student oriented.
If u don' go into this class knowing at least high school chemistry be prepared to not know anything. Mr. Abela talks to the whole class like we already know what he is talking about and will literally throughout the semester say things like (you guys should know that). He is not a bad person Just bad teaching Curves all test. No exam reviews.
If you want to be lectured on Star Wars and tested on Chemistry you've found the right professor for you!! Abela expects you to be a chemist upon entry to the class and talks to you like you are dumb when you ask questions. If you have an option FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!
Good professor , pretty tough if you do not put in the work . Listen carefully to his lectures and take good notes.
No matter how much you practice unless you had an extremely good chemistry teacher in high school your not going to pass with the grade you want. Furthermore, there's no point in showing up to lectures or labs. its a waste of time because he goes of topic, and to make matters worse he skips problems because he assumes we know them already.
He has no deadlines, everything is due at the end of the semester so you "can work at your own speed", he's fast paced, speaks fast and speaks to you as though you know the periodic table off the bat. lectures aren't attendance mandated but labs are. I have no choice but to retake. I felt out of place and he gave no guidance
His class was actually not that bad. A lot of the reviews on here scared me, but it's a chill class if you take time to learn the material and GO TO SI SESSIONS. It's chem, so you have to be prepared for it to be a little difficult. Overall he's a really nice guy and isn't like what a lot of the reviews on here say.
The class was tough, all he does is read off the slides, none of his assignments have due dates and arent really organized. Other than that, hes a pretty chill teacher.
Professor Abela was straight forward during the first lecture on how the class would be. He is approachable and willing to answer any questions.
I was also very iffy about taking his class BUT, this is my second time in his class (Chem-001A & B) and he is honestly a very chill professor. Everything is due at the end of the semester so you go at your own pace. At the end of the semester he will look at the overall class grade and decide whether to curve the final which was 20% of our grade.
He LOVES chemistry..but assumes you understand it immediately. Feel comfortable asking questions and for help. However for a complex subject he is too hands off. The class is basically powerpoints/ self guided labs. Your grade is ALL from tests and a final. I know NO chemistry but tests are open notes so I passed. The experience was overwhelming.
I took Abela back in Fall 2021 and I was scared at first to take the course. Overall I enjoyed the class! He has good lectures and definitely take advantage of the free tutoring that gives with the class! It definitely helps to understand more and be consistent. He allows notes and is helpful/considerate when it comes asking questions.
He gave great lectures and would answer any questions during, but in lab he was the opposite. Lab was basically on your own and if you tried to ask him anything he would usually be rude. Labs were not hard but you need to pay attention to what they are teaching you. A quiz and exam for each chapter and a lab quiz for all labs. Study, pay attention.
Good lecturer, terrible in labs. He sits on his phone the whole time not helping students unless asking for help. Unfortunately chem is naturally hard, so you would think he would be a lot more hands on, unfortunately not. Labs are very important. Very test heavy. I honestly recommend him to be your very last choice when selecting teachers.
He definitely left the learning up to you and how much you were willing to participate. Since attendance was not mandatory it is easy to procrastinate. Do not procrastinate if you want a passing grade. If you want to be prepared for labs attend lecture but all your directions can be found in your coursework.
His online chemistry course can be challenging, but he is very accommodating in terms of assisting students in person on campus or online via Zoom. If your working hours conflict with taking an in-person chemistry course, this is an excellent online course to take.
I will never take this man again. He makes students feel very dumb about themselves because they don't know basic chem. I think his lab is the worst science lab I have taken at west hills. He doesn't help no one at all even if you have questions about the lab he expects you to know answer. Any teacher is better than him.
i should of never taken this guy for chem. he teaches like everyone knows what he's teaching. like, he expects everyone to understand what he's teaching. during lab he'll just sit there and make you do the lab and he'll sit on his ass and watch youtube videos.
Gen-Chem1 is a difficult course. Mr. Abela does not have mandatory attendance, but wet labs are mandatory, he is a great instructor for lecture portion but for lab he just explains quickly and then sits down for the rest of the lab, he's always willing to help but also is a bit intimidating. This class in all honesty is learn by yourself.
Attending the laboratories was required in this awesome class even when lectures weren't. He would do his best to assist you with any questions. This course consists of homework that must be completed before the conclusion of the semester, which are tests and quizzes. All in all, I had fun with the experiments, and Abela made chemistry exciting.
This professor was really good. He helped me a lot by breaking things down for me. I am not good at chem or math at all, but he took his time to slowly teach me.
Offers in person and option labs, with some mandatory labs. Class is about 100% made up of exams and quizzes. Really hard to bring up grade. Good lecture, only thing is he has really sloppy handwriting and writes small. Offers very little assistance with labs, very vague. Can be quick to anger in lab. Chill person to talk to, laid back.
I took the 6-week summer course, and it's very manageable. He clearly explains his expectations, and if you follow them, you can easily get an A. Labs are super easy with simple instructions. Exams and quizzes are open notes. Honestly, I don't know how anyone could fail this class unless they purposely try to. Easiest chemistry class ever!
Don't let the negative reviews get to you, his class is easy to pass theres no way of failing. He has a clear criteria and as long as you listen in lab, you will be fine since you're on your own after he tells you what to do. Lecture is optional, just be present for every exam/quiz (including lab quizzes) and you can leave. Listen in lab fr fr.
Very chill nice dude, easy to talk to and very relaxed demeanor. Very organized and manageable class, labs only require attendance. Always available for extra help or additional support. Class is always interesting and easy to follow.
not gonna lie chill guy. just show up to class. Mine was a hybrid. Lab, 2 quizzes that's it if you want a good grade then its possible.
I had him for general chem and it was fairly easy. Attendance is mandatory for credit. He doesn't do a great job at explaining concepts in class, but he uploads a long lecture video for every chapter. You will have to devote a lot of your time to studying if you truly want to understand the material. There is a quiz for every lab, which is about 25
