Admitted that he is new to teaching Humanities(Lit.). So he is somewhat disorganized from just starting out. But he is quickly adjusting and focusing better on the material that needs to be learned. Easy reading questions and blogs that are graded simply for you doing them, not whether they are right or wrong.
comes off as a hard teacher, but once you get used to his standards you'll be fine. very good about returning emails. and is a fair grader, you get a grade for just doing your homework regardless of it being right, attendance is taken. i would say if you are up for a challenge and willing to work hard for your grade, then take him.
Thought he was hard to begin with, but once you get used to what he wants its pretty easy. He will give you all the help you need and is very nice about it. He is straight forward about everything.
Dr. Armstrong was super helpful and extremely nice. I thought the way he graded was very fair and he gives points for your efforts. Overall, I would definitely take him again! I's too bad he's not teaching 1102!
At times he was boring. but in the end he was a really great teacher. do your homework, he does not grade it according to right & wrong answers but if you tried and did your best He a flexible grader and LOVES TO TALK.Dont plan on leaving class until about 2 min after the right time.
Dr. A is a great instructor, but this class is by far the hardest class that I have ever been in! The readings aren't that bad and neither are the four-five questions or blogs that are required are that hard, but the lit exams are hard. I went to everything, did all the homework and blogs, made a 43.5 midterm and 55 on final and came out with a B.
always shows up to class, lets class out later than should, loves to talk and believes that if you make a C in his class you should be happy because its an "rigorous" course, even though a lot of information is learned- this class was not for the ones who are only taking english as a core requirement. Over 50% of your grade was just 2 papers.
Dr. A is a good prof. He acts like hes is gonna be super hard at first but its all talk. He is very helpful and very nice. He is extremely nerdy however, but is willing to do whatever it takes for his students to do good. Class is an easy A as long as you show up for class. Recomend!
Dr. A is one of the best english profs around!! He prepares students very well for 1102! He has high expectations but is very helpful. Attendance is not "mandatory" but if you attend all class meetings you get 2 extra points to your final grade! Easy and fair homework assingments! Is far one of the best professors that I had at ASU!!
Dr. Armstrong is a great teacher! He prepares you for the midterm & final so you know exactly what to expect-both were kind of hard but if you study you'll be fine. He also says if you do poorly on the essays or tests you can still pass. Easy hw & blogs that he gives you points just for doing. & no quizes all semester! I highly recommend him!
Just wrapping up the Spring semester & boy, it's been oodles of work. But Dr. A definitely made the class worthwhile. He brings new insight & life to every literary piece. He is the only professor you should take for Humanities.
Very helpful.. Would definately recommend!!
Great teacher. I wish he taught 1102!
One of my, all-time, fav professors. He's ridiculously nice, funny, and really cares that you understand the material. He is definitely someone that you'll want to keep up with after the class is over. I CANNOT recommend this man enough! he is definitely the guy to take for HUMN, as well as any of the other courses that he offers! TAKE HIM!
His class was like I was taking another philosophy class. I could hardly understand anything he tried to explain and I did well in philosophy. His "period concepts" were subjective and then he grades on that subjectivity. If you can avoid him do so. You won't get out of his class with ease.
I took Dr. A for 2001/2002 and I still love him as an instructor. I think he is the greatest! The class is tough, but you have to be willing to put forth an effort. THIS IS NOT AN EASY A CLASS! If you do the work, you can pull off a B and the reading stuff isn't too bad. I DEFINITELY recommend Dr. A for any HUMN that you need! TAKE HIM!!!
Absolutely awesome. He's ridiculously nice and helpful. I got an A, but I put in a lot of time and effort. A is definitely achievable. I highly recommend taking him. Go to class everyday and he gives your overall average +2. Loved him!!
He is incredibly helpful and understanding. The course itself is hard, but he helps to set you up for success on the Interdisciplinary midterm and final. Clearly outlines what you need to write to do well. Come to class every day and get +2 on your overall grade. He doesn't give you just facts, but a deeper appreciation of the material.
Dr. A is the best lit teacher I have ever had! I was scared to take ASU's 1101 because of all the horror stories, but I recommend him! I learned so much and he has very reasonable grading standards! I got an A but I worked for it. As long as you do your work and try you will do fine. Would take him again in a heartbeat
Honestly, this guy is a great teacher but he can be pretty boring at times because he loves what he does so much. I would recommend him for any humanities because he tells you exactly what to write your essays on and how to do good on them. If you want to do good on the actual tests, you MUST read the book because the quote id's are so hard.
Can be boring at times, but cant they all. Do not think to far out of the box and things will go well. He is very helpful and will explain things until you understand. Humn is overwhelming but stick to his plan and you will get through it
Dr. A is a great teacher. He explains exactly what he wants on his essays and teaches you to think through the process. I was horrified of humanities before I took 2001 with him but he explains everything clearly and interestingly! Show up every day and he adds 2+ points to your grade. Must read the book to pass the quote ID's. He's a great prof.
He is a great professor!! I would recommend him anyday. He is always willing to help. He really cares about his students and does his best to help them. If you take his advice your grade will improve. Such a great professor! And so nice!
Great professor, but has a tendency to ramble during lecture at times. The class is difficult but enjoyable, and you will come out a much better writer than when you entered. Taking the time to meet with him outside class is a must if you want to make an A. I would definitely recommend taking his class.
He is a great professor! He cares a lot about what he is teaching. He provides a bunch of helpful things to help you do the best that you can. He does not give quizzes which is great! I would defiantly suggest him to anyone!
A VERY good teacher. I came into this class dreading ASU English and came out a better writer. Very helpful and clear, but does tend to ramble in lectures (but that's just his personality). Very lenient on deadlines and pushes them back. Overall the best professor I've had.
He will post everything you need on D2L. I'm taking him now and the class is pretty good. Nothing in life is easy but he makes humanities easier!!
Dr. A is crystal clear on what he expects from you. Everything is posted on D2L. The reading load is light and each week you have reading questions on the material. The midterm and final are essays which he will thoroughly explain what he wants. Easy grader if you do it correctly. Would definately recommend him
This was my first summer class and I was extremely apprehensive about it at first. Dr. Armstrong is the best professor I have had thus far in college. He truly cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. He tells you exactly what he wants and what he is looking for in the essays. Take advantage of his office hours because he is extremely helpful. The class is not an easy A, but a B is doable as long as you work diligently. I would take him again in a second!
I was very nervous about taking this class but Dr. Armstrong made it where the class understood exactly what he wanted and helped as much as he could. He kept everything interesting. He comes off a little quite at first but he def has a great personality. Not an easy A for sure but if you do the work and try, you will get a B with no problem.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! He gives out WAY more work than other english 1101 teachers do and you have a paper due almost every time you meet for class. Its an awful class, avoid it if possible.
I thought Dr. Armstrong was an awesome teacher! I wish he taught 1102! There are many writing assignments; however, throughout the semester he spread the assignments out more. I enjoyed his teaching and class very much! He really cares about seeing his students succeed!
He is really laid back and interesting to listen to. Whenever you need help on an assignment he is always there to lend a hand! I wish I could have him as my professor for ENGL 1102 next semester. If you are thinking about taking him, I would definitely stop wasting time and register for his class before all seats are filled!
Dr. A is awesome. He tells you exactly what he expects. He is a nice professor who helps students in anyway he can. If I could take him for 1102, I would. Best freshman english professor at GRU.
Likes: Records every lecture. Works around your schedule and his to set appointments. Very approachable. Very understanding. Dislikes: Haven't had any! He really cares about his students and he is a great professor. I recommend him for Humanities and English.
Dr. Armstrong is a brilliant professor. The class is difficult because it makes you think not just memorize. Dr. A. is willing to help if you are not understanding a concept and he gives review sheets so you can see how he words questions and answers. Great university professor.
Helpful and brilliant. Very benevolent personality. Hard worker too! He actually wrote some of the assignments alongside us. It is amazing how much he cares for the student. Make sure you take this professor before you leave. Easy B's, achievable A's. Can be meticulous at times, but that's part of his work ethic. He really makes the content shine.
Great professor. Very knowledgeable. I dreaded taking this class and waited to take it in summer to get it done and over with, now I wish I had taken it in a full semester because there is so much to learn from this professor. Do the assignments, attend class, and study the study guides and there's no way you'll fail. He's always willing to help u
Very clear directions, willing to help when asked, just a few papers and some quizes.
Let me start by saying that I understood everything that this professor went over in class, I took good notes, and I did all of the assignments. I got a B+ out of his class , and I don't know how. The only grades I got back were from two essays. No individual feedback was given on the essay. Very mysterious way of coming up with my final grade .
Dr. A is great with his students and will go out of the way to help you make a good grade. His HUMN 2001 is mostly lecture and you do have a lot of reading and papers to write, but if you show up to class and listen to his requirements you shouldn't have any trouble.
Lots of writing, very difficult papers but once you get the hang of them you shouldn't have a problem staying B or above. Kind of boring lectures sometimes, but interesting if you do the reading! Overall I would take him again. He has a nice personality and wants you to succeed. Lax about attendance if you let him knowget your work done.
Dr. Armstrong is really helpful. If you ever have a question for him, he answers his email very quickly. My only problem with his class is that it was a lot of homework for an intro class. He also has a social way he expects papers that is very hard to get used to.
This was a fun class, but you should avoid it if you hate writing. The prof is very helpful, and a cool guy. Watch out on your papers though, FORMATTING IS KEY. Take your paper to him the week of and ask him about your formatting, and he'll point out if something is wrong. Other than that, follow the rubrics to get an A.
He is perfect. Please take him.
Dr. Armstrong is a great professor. He's very thorough and organized. However, he is somewhat of a slow grader. The workload was heavy. There were quizzes, writing responses (250 words min), discussion posts, reading ?'s and a final paper (1000 words min). You will read a lot. If you want to be a better writer and critical thinker take him!
DO NOT take his class unless you have a passion for writing! This class is essentially a writing class with a focus on world religions. This semester we have (4) 1000 word min. papers, (8) 250 word min. writing responses, and like (14) Reading Questions -these are easy. No tests thankfully, but I'd almost rather have tests than all these papers...
Do not take this class online if you think that you are going to breeze through this course. He has lectures and outlines online quizzes etc. With that being said. He grades on FORMAT NOT CONTENT. Meaning give him EXACTLY what he is asking for and it wouldn't matter how terrible your responses are. Just read the texts and respond how he asks
Avoid at all costs. Grades papers based solely on formatting and changes his formatting expectations every paper. I thought this was a humanities class not English. Work load was crazy.
DO NOT take the online class if you don't plan to have homework, EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. The class wasn't too hard but the workload is ridiculous.
Dr. Armstrong is very knowledgeable on the topics, but his class is very based on discussions and papers which take up a lot of the class.
I have taken Dr. Armstrong for several philosophy course. He is one of the top professors on campus. He is very intelligent and can be difficult to understand but for the most part, he does a great job of making sure you understand. You'll read and write a lot but it is interesting and you will leave the class having learned something. Grades easy.
One of the best professors at AU. Be warned that the majority of your grade comes from papers, so if you're not a good writer I would choose another professor. However, his class was thoroughly interesting and he's incredibly knowledgable about his subject and passionate about teaching it, so he's a great choice!
Dr. Armstrong is the best. Take him. He makes Philosophy relatable and fun. He's very helpful, utilize his office hours for the writing assignments. He is very clear on what he wants and how he grades.
I took PHIL 2010 online during the summer. Although there was work due pretty much every night, it was easy work (Keep in mind it was a summer semester). But he was very flexible with his due dates, you could submit an assignment due at 12:00 AM at 12:54 AM. Or even over the next couple of days. He was really nice and understanding!!!
Armstrong is one of the best professors at AU. He is very clear about his expectations and communicates what you need to do to pass. He spends time researching not only philosophy, but also how to be a better teacher. Generally cares that students learn and applies his time to that.
Dr. Armstrong actually knows what he's talking about when he opens his mouth. There are moments when he is momentarily too smart (he's super intelligent and it shows) for his own good - but he's super good at reading the room and using lamens terms when needed. You will GROW under his instruction. If offered the opportunity - TAKE THIS MAN'S CLASS!
Clearly committed to the job and super knowledgeable about the material. Always willing to help understand concepts and gives good feedback on discussion posts and papers. DO NOT take this class if you are even slightly lazy. Be ready to write. Lots of work but an A is possible with hard work and dedication.
Dont take him if u have a full load and this class is just a graduation requirement! There is 1-2hr hw due every class day. There is online quizzes about every 2 weeks and you only get 1 min per question to answer! Also there are many papers that he grades extremely hard. Please be aware of this before you sign up for him. Hes a really nice guy!
Dr. Armstrong grades more on format than content, this is basically freshman comp 3 with focus on MLA formatting. He takes a very long time to grade papers and return them so you will not have the chance to fix formatting errors on the next assignment and will lose points again. The only feedback about your work is peer review.
Professor Armstrong clearly articulates the criteria for graded assignments and is always available for after class appointments and via email. It is evident that he values his students and their learning. He allows room for late assignments, but does expect you to attend class --as most professors do--. I highly recommend taking his class!
Dr. Armstrong types his notes as he lectures and constantly clears his throat, it is distracting. Doesn't upload grades online. Late grader. Goes over lecture time every single class. Lectures not engaging. Boring. Talks and reads at you during lecture. Talks to you like you have a PhD in PHIL
Knows philosophy and does an excellent job explaining it so that you can understand it. Class was fun as we got the opportunity to apply philosophy to a movie throughout the semester. Excellent teacher!
Dr Armstrong is very nice but when it comes to writing papers is very confusing. After receiving a failing grade on the first paper I completed the second a week in advance of the due date to get his feedback and it was always "not good", even after inputting his corrections (I've gotten A's in English). Unfortunately I had to drop his class.
This is in no way an easy class, be prepared to spend hours writing a paper just to get a 50 because of citation errors and comma splicing. Far too high of expectations when it comes to papers. A very kind, flexible man but he grades so hard and assigns so much work I struggled to hold the motivation to turn in anything for half the semester.
He is terrible at getting things back to you. He doesn't give actual rubrics for papers, and that's all you do. He isn't upfront about everything he's grading for until you complain about your grade, but then it's too late. Didn't put in most grades till after drop date. I would never recommend to a friend in a program where GPA is important.
Dr. Armstrong is a great professor. He is very clear about what is necessary for assignments and has very engaging lectures. Would definitely take this class again!
He is fantastic! He gives a good amount of work, but if you pay attention you'll be fine! He really wants his students to learn.
Look Im sure hes a nice guy, but heres the thing he treats his intro level philosophy class as if you are a philosophy and English major. And God forbid you take him during the summer where you have 2-3 Assignments due every day and a paper due every Sunday. Also grades you extremely harsh for MLA formatting. Dont take him honestly.
DON'T TAKE THIS MAN. If you're anything but a philosophy major, don't. He grades and teaches as if this is graduate school for philosophy. In my 4 yrs of college I have never struggled so much in a course. He's a really nice guy. Just has expectations that are way too high for an entry level class. Good luck on papers. Everyone fails them.
I took philosophy in high school so I thought this would be a decent class for me to take to knock some free credits out of the way before I graduate. This class was HARD- when it really didn't need to be. He grades extremely late/harsh and is not helpful when you reach out to him for help. Would NOT recommend unless you're a PHIL major.
I think some of these recent reviews are a bit harsh. Yes, Dr. Armstrong can be a tough and picky grader but he is always helpful and will show you exactly what to improve. He's also a really nice guy. My only criticism would be that he is known to fall WAY behind on grading assignments and rarely grades them by the time he says he will.
This was by far the hardest class I've ever taken. Dr. Armstrong teaches on a PhD level and expects your work to reflect that. Do not take him if you can. I barely passed and worked insanely hard. There is no reason an intro class should be as difficult as this one is. Avoid him at all costs.
Professor Armstrong is a very nice and caring Professor but his lectures, assignments are very confusing. I promise you’ll leave the class more confused and with a headache. If I would’ve known this was how the class was going to go I would’ve never chosen it, I only chose it because I needed an extra class.
Philosophy majors should be here. Very in depth, cumulative material. It's HOW to think, not what. With this being said, it's intro ethics but felt higher level. Tons of reading and rereading. Comprehension is crucial. Dr. A is a kind, intelligent professor, but this class was far more involved than I expected, and it usually exceeds lecture time.
Cares about students and their understanding of material. Difficult course but he always is wiling to help!
This professor isn't very well at answering your questions and sometimes redirects and not answers. If he does answer you he will drag the answer out and spend a whole 30 minutes on one question.
Choose a different professor if your worried about your GPA. Papers are used as exams and graded subjectively. He doesn't have a rubric for the papers and gives you pages of ambiguous instructions. Also, I didn't receive feedback that helped improve the way he wanted us to write. Terrible experience for a philosophy class.
I took Dr. Armstrong in Spring 2020. Good professor, but a difficult class. Make sure to complete readings Qs before class. When it went online, discussion posts were utilized. Dr. Armstrong was a strict grader, but showed you what to improve. He fell behind on grading often times. He was a guide in me developing my critical thinking skills.
Dr. Armstrong's lectures were very interesting, although sometimes we would talk about the same things in the next class and it got repetitive. If you show your interest and your understanding of the material you will get good grades on your essays. I enjoyed the class and the readings overall, although sometimes frustrating waiting on grades.
I took this as an online class over the summer and I struggled. He sent an emailing saying to not take more than 2 classes or work part time due to the amount of work. He does not provide any formatting for his WR so you do not know how he wants his papers. He is also strict on MLA formatting and doesn't give good feedback to help you improve.
As a senior, and English minor, I figured that taking this class wouldn't be THAT bad... I was wrong. As a person, Dr. Armstrong seems nice, but as a professor, he is the toughest grader you'll ever meet. he may respond to your emails in an hour, or answer in three days... who knows. if you are needing a class for an elective, just think twice.
Great person but a difficult grader. I believe he grades papers as if they are his own, which sounds great but in reality if you don't articulate something as he would, your paper is not going to be good to him. I know this for a fact because most papers for philosophy are subjective writing but are graded otherwise...saying this, be careful.
As a professor I really enjoyed Dr.Armstrong, but as a subject I struggled in his class. He definitely knows what he's talking about, but I think he forgets that no one else understands. If you're taking this class go. to. tutoring. Be prepared to be confused.
Dr. Armstrong is a good and caring professor. There are no tests, and most of the grades came from take-home quizzes that are questions from the reading homework and papers. He isn't a tough grader, so it's not too hard to do well in his class. He gives really detailed and personalized feedback for each paper.
While I did not find the course to be interesting at times, it seems that Professor Armstrong was very passionate in his teaching. I highly encourage participation in his class if you want to learn the material better (and so it doesn't feel awkward in class). He cares for his students and is willingly to help others understand the material.
He is very passionate about the subject and does his best to ensure it is understood. He is a pretty easy grader and will give details on what you can improve throughout the course. I would definitely recommend taking this course with him, he is amazing!
I recommend you NEVER take this class. I had an extremely hard time with this professor. The reading questions and quizzes were a breeze, but as soon as we got to the writing responses, the tough grader came out. He said you could redo them, but if you did he'd never change the grade. Unless you absolutely need this class, I'd keep my distance.
He's a nice guy but gives out a lot of homework. There are two assignments due before each class. You have to write papers for his class, for which he does not give clear grading guidelines. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY A because it is not an easy elective. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU HAVE A FULL COURSE LOAD!!! confusing lectures!
I took him Fall 2023, decent professor. If you're not interested in philosophy, I would not recommend. Concepts can be pretty confusing & can build on one another, you have to understand pretty much all of it to do good on the papers. Learning the basics makes it a little easier but if you don't have outstanding reading comprehension, good luck
DONE TAKE HIM, VERY TOUGH GRADER, SPENT ENTIRE SEMESTER, MIND YOU WITH A HEAVY LOAD OF CLASSES, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HIS CLASS, DOES NOT GIVE GOOD FEEDBACK AND HE DOESN'T EVEN GIVE YOU PROMPTS.
Professor Armstrong is a really nice guy who cares about his students. His class wasn't all bad it's just his grading. He won't grade papers for weeks so when you write your next one it's hard to know where to improve.
Class consisted of reading questions, quizzes, short papers, and the final paper. Makes reading questions and quizzes easy to help boost your grade. Prompts for papers can be a little confusing at times, but he is quick to respond to emails and is very helpful during office hours. Very nice and caring.
Just don't take his class if you have other options. He is a very though grader. He also gives a lot of work. And he takes his class way too seriously. Don't even get me started on attendance.
Very punctual professor, everything is laid out and his rubrics and expectations are clear. Overall really solid guy, very kind and lenient on deadlines. Tries to help students as much as he can. Clearly very passionate and well-informed about philosophy which makes the class much more interesting. Tough grader, lots of work/papers.
Considering philosophy is a very confusing course, his explanations worked great! He was very flexible about meeting with me for deeper explanations and answers emails very fast. I will say he is a slow grader but most of the papers are film orientated!
Honors: PHIL 2010: Very Very Difficult Class; Always Pay Attention & Focus In; Lots Of Reading & Taking Notes; Always Participate In Class; Very Very Difficult Grader; Difficult Short Papers To Write; Very Confusing Class; Do Not Take This Class If You Think This Is Easy; Must Work Together With Classmates; No Final Or Quizzes
I love the professor—he's caring, considerate, and keeps things organized, but the content can get dense. Make sure to pay attention, take good notes, and go to office hours—all the things I didn't do. If you stay on top of it, you can get an A instead of a C like I did! Shoutout to Dr. Armstrong for being considerate with my grades.
This class is a very hard class, and it requires a lot of deep thinking and good attention/enagement everyday. However, at a 9 am class, I was mostly looking forward to Armstrong's personality especially when you talk to him before class. Only thing is he does grade slow so try your best on every single assignment especially on the papers.
