Very cool, kinda funny, understandable
Great teacher, makes sure that you understand
Very good instructor!
He is fun and very into math and he enjoys teaching his students, he really makes math a joy to learn. I am very happy he is my instructor.
Take more time and explain the information and give more credit to the homework and more extra credit for those who really need it. Try to be encouraging not discouraging.
Sticking with this class was the hardest thing I've ever did. But it was also the smartest thing because I passed and in some strange way Mr. Balman helped. I still think we should get more credit for homework.
he takes a graphical approach to everythinghe's not the best guy if u need step by step instructionHe blasts through examples, expects us to check out the video lectures in mrc. hes good at sayin he'll help u but if u try to schedule somethin heisnt around
He goes fast over the material and his test scores are weighted to high. He should give more points for homework.
I feel that Prof. Balman is an excellent teacher. Truly dedicated to helping his students succeed. Must do the required work to get the grade. While material is repeatative, could be more patient in explaining concepts. Makes it apply to real life.
tough but fair
Mr. B is a great teacher. He always offers to meet with you if you have q's. I have never had a problem with talking with him if I schedule a time with him first. I am very happy with my choice and will try to get him next semester for intermediate math.
He is a great teacher and he is great!
Mr. B is the best math teacher I have ever had in my entire life, and i HATE math
Very nice and wants his students to succeed. I had no idea I could understand math so well before this class. Not at all too overwhelming.
He really wants his students to do well, but does expect them to work a little-especially if you fall behind. But he is always willing to work with you one-on-one in his office if you're struggling. For me, it was a very easy class.
Mr. B rocks. Math is one of my worst subjects esp College Alg. He's very flexiable and is willing to help you if you want it. If you don't understand something one way, he'll try to explain it to you to make you understand it better. He rocks!
Great teacher. It was a real pleasure to have him as a teacher.
i dont think he was very helpful, rushed thru things, took a graphical approach to it i'd prefer learning things the right way 1st then plugging #s into the calc a lot of ppl dropped my class and i know lots of students that didnt like the class beware
Mr. B makes Algebra interesting and is enthusiastic about the material. His lectures feel less like lectures and more like stand up material! Overall he's been great---very smart, helpfull, quirky, and kind of cute...
Friendly. Helpful. Good prof.
Balman is a wonderful teacher! I wish every professor could be so helpful. He will always make time for you in his office. He really wants his students to suceed!
I really liked his teaching style and he seems to really like what he does! Very nice guy and helpful! I want to take him for College Algebra!
Mr.B was great! Not very many professors are will to spend so much time helping students. I am terrrible at math, but i finished the class well because he took the time to help and re-explain things.
should have given my a letter grade higher then he did. but he's an excellent teacher.
BORING! But I learned there are 137 tiles on the ceiling.
great teacher..good sense of humor
rushes
Lots of homework! Tough but fair on tests.

Very boring ad lots of homework. Don't do it

This guy is awesome!! The most Patient Math teacher I've ever had!!
Mr. Balman rocks! Gives you credit for problems even if you get them completely wrong, as long as you show your work. Tells you exactly what's gonna be on the tests. He was an easy 'A' for me!
He's nice, but won't help you on an individual basis. He speeds through the class and his test are difficult.
He taught pretty well, he goes over everything, just do your homework and you will do fine!!!!!
I took hime for two different math classes. He moved way to fast and he does not grade you hamoework till a week after you turned it in. He does not explain things very well and his tests are hard. I would NOT take him.
I tried to pass his class, but I had to drop it $$$. I've passed inter. algebra now & I wouldn't take from him again. Tests are hard - he's not helpful, but he's nice.
I really enjoyed Mr. B. The class itself is a difficult class regardless of who is teaching it. I tried to pass this class twice before and had to drop both times. With the help of Mr. B. it was not easy but doable. Remember, at one point in time 2 + 2 was hard. And I think he's HOT!!!!
Amazing teacher
I have no idea what everyone is talking about! His class is very simple and easy, and he doesnt move fast. He always asks the class if they understand. He is very helpful. He tries to be funny, sometimes it doesnt work out. But if you have a chance to take him..do it!
AWESOME TEACHER! breaks down math in to easy to understand steps, and has a great set-up for your final exam taking the grades of all lower test scores. Will definitely take his courses in the future. Watch your cell phones, he's a dancer.
Great math professor! He explains everything very clearly and is always available for help! You can tell he enjoys his job which makes it easier to enjoy math!
Mr. Balman is very good at what he does and he knows his stuff. I am not sure what people are talking about when they say he rushes... He is very gracious and is open for slowing down and having "Parties" at his office. If you do the work you will succeed. He can be tough but you will leave knowing your stuff.Patient and a funny guy!A+!
more than a teacher he is a nice guy,I love the way he teaches.he uses lots of material and examples to relate the Math problems with real life which is the key for enjoying and understandig math.I bet you will love to be in his class.
Prof. Balman is the best. He has a rare sense of humor combined with an excellent sense of discipline and work ethic. I heartily recommend him as a professor.
Hes awesome! He will help you with any problem you ask him, and hes funny!
He is a great teacher, easy to understand and follow. His handouts are very helpful and if you don't understand something he will work with you till you do. he's also funny in a different way but good! i would definantly recommend taking any of his classes!
He is a great teacher, easy to understand and follow. His handouts are very helpful and if you don't understand something he will work with you till you do. he's also funny in a different way but good! i would definantly recommend taking any of his classes!
hes awesome! BEST MATH TEACHER IVE EVER HAD.
A teacher who genuinely cares and certainly puts a lot of effort into his lectures. Lots of homework, but to learn calc it's pretty necessary. Final exam grade replaces previous lower exam scores. My only complaint is that sometimes he would take the more complex path to an answer which can confuse some students. Overall, a great professor.
Mr. Balman is an awesome teacher. Very helpful and he's funny. While not everyone will get an A (Calculus is not an easy course), he'll do his best to help you reach your goal. If you keep up with homework, make use of his time in class and hang out at the math lab, you'll do fine.
Mr. B is quite possibly the best teacher I have ever had. He really cares about his students and he wants to see all of them succeed!!
He is the best teacher i've ever had. He helps you with all the problem you have until you understand it clearly. The test he give was not that hard, not too easy as well.
Excellent professor! He does everything he can to help you. Our class (college algebra) was given practice quizzes and exams before the actually graded quizzes and exams were given for practice. The practice sheets had the same kinds of problems as the real quizzes and exams. By far the best professor I have ever had!
Professor didn't make learning easy for me. He could have went into more detail.
take him! if you have any problems that you do not understand, he will explain to you until you get it. his tests are ok, but not that easy.
Dorky but in a good way. Gives homework daily. Very fair and helpful, will spend as much 1on1 time as needed and can be contacted at all times.
This guy failed me on the final test for not showing my work even though I got most of the answers right on the scan tron.
Mr. Balman is an excellent professor. He's very helpful and makes math understandable and entertaining at the same time. I would recommend this professor to anyone.
Took Calculus I in the summer. Great teacher, explains concepts well and moves through material fast. Show up to class and do your homework! Don't take Calc I in the summer unless you are really motivated. Takes about 2+ hours to do homework and even longer if you did not have Calculus in high school. The final is tough, takes time to get an A.
He is great. Took calculus with him and really enjoyed his teaching style. Explains everything you need to know. Put in the time to study and you will do well.
Mr. Balman is an awesome teacher!!
He is a really nice man. He will teach you no matter how stupid you are like me.
Brian is an awesome teacher!!! He is super helpful and really nice! I loved going to his class everyday!!! He is goofy, but makes math fun!!!
Awesome instructor! Enjoyed the teaching techniques and attitude during classes. Homework heavy, but it's best with math classes. Always helpful, very understanding. I will take my last math class based on what he's teaching that fits my requirement.
He is not a good teacher. If you have a hard time in math DO NOT TAKE HIM. He will tell you to refer to a friend or the my math lab. Very unhelpful.
Started out confident and liking this class, then wanted to drop midway through. He only helps if you pretend to understand right away and suck up.His explanations go over your head and he doesn't instill confidence in his students.Has favorites and is too busy to sit down and work out any kinks you have on problems. I'm done with math after this.
Mr. Balman is a great teacher. He really takes time to work with students 1 on 1. I would recommend no other College Algebra teacher but him.
Mr. Balman has his hands full with his Elementary Algebra class(like the one I was in). Most people in Elem. Algebra don't like Math and he makes it easier to digest. People who say he doesn't help them probably did not show up for class, or pay attention when they should have. He is a kind man and HEAVY homework that MAKES YOU LEARN!great teacher
I took calc from balman. It was a very tough class but he was a very helpful professor. He is always in his office ready to help. I think he lives in his office actually. Also he responds quicker to an email faster than any professor. He has a tough demeanor but he's actually a pretty nice guy.
Mr. Balman is kind hearted man who cares about his students success. Calculus is a hard class, but Mr. B did everything his ability to make sure the class understood the material to pass his exams and the final exam. His sarcastic humor is a riot, but do not take it personal with what he says. GREAT PROFESSOR with 20+ yrs of experience.
Brian is the best math professor a JCCC. His tests are kinda tough, but if you did the homework and show up to class, you will do fine. He has a mean look, but he has a heart of gold. Great professor.
My favorite math professor ever. He stresses homework heavily, but excellent teacher. Never any surprises very upfront and honest.
Honestly the BEST professor. He encourages students and is willing to help at anytime. If you struggle in math, he is the one to take. He explains math in the most simple ways. He gives a bit of homework but it's for the benefit of the student. I am horrible at math but I managed to get through it because of him. GREAT PROFESSOR. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
great teacher, very helpful whenever you need him, also has a great sense of humor
Great professor. Homework is checked for a grade, but if you do at least half, you should be good. I took his class over the summer, and if you attended class and did your homework, your final replaced lower test scores.
Great Professor!!! I have always struggled with math, but he was very nice to always explain things in and outside of class to ensure I understood the material.
LOVE Mr. Balman. I truly wish more teacher were like him. If you put in a little time and effort, he will make this course totally worth it. He finds interest in his students and you can see the love he has for helping students. Hands down best teacher I've had at jccc. TAKE HIM
Not an easy A but it is still possible with hard work. Mr. Balman is super sweet and will work with you and help in any way you need. He is understanding but you need to show up everyday in order to understand the material.
I had to take Calculus over again because my first professor wasn't so great. I really understood Mr. B. I had no clue on integrals taking calc 1 over the spring and crazy enough taking Calc 1 with Mr. B over the summer I understood integral with out a problem. Expect him to incorporate and explain why you learned what you did in the past.!!!
His class isnt an easy A but he is SOOOO helpful and nice that if you come to class, try, do your homework, and pay attention youll do great!
he loveth math. that's all that matters when we students are concerned. he knows how to get everyone understand math.i loved this class. take it if you want to really know what you're doing in math.
I love Mr. B! He really tries to help everyone understand math instead of just how to do it. He assigns a lot of homework which is turned in for credit and so you do have to work hard, but he makes it worth it. I felt like I learned a lot in his class.
Brian Balman is an amazing Prof and great individual! Math is not in any way easy for me being a student with a disability... But Mr balmans level of compassion, care, and empathy was incredible! I went to him a lot for math help and he was great. Mr. B saw something in me that I couldn't see in myself...I made a c but he was proud :) thank you :)
Professor Balman was a great. The expectations were set out clearly at the beginning of the semester. Just make sure you do the homework, it does count towards your grade.
Mr. B is probably one of the most clear and proficient math teacher I have ever had. He is actually hilarious and super fun. His only negative is that he assigns an insane amount of homework problems and his tests are impossible. He does this to prepare you for the final, but if it wasn't for his test, I'd rate him higher, still, he's a fun guy.
Mr. B is a great teacher. He is careful to both show the math side of things and to explain the concepts in everyday language too. He picks the even numbers corresponding to the hardest homework questions for in-class examples, which is useful. There is a ton of homework, but you'll do well if you work hard.
One of the BEST teachers ever!! He is very kind hearted. Also, he is good at explaining the concepts of math. I really enjoyed his class and was sad to see it end. You can tell he loves math, he loves teaching, and he really believes in his students. I never believed I was good at math, but after taking his class, I now know I can do it.
At first, the only reason I took this Pr. was because I thought his name was Mr. Batman. Luckily for me he is an awesome, funny guy. I don't personally like math and I struggle with it, but if you go to class and do your assignments, he makes it clear and is willing to sit down and work with you. A very wonderful man.
This guy will literally break math down in the most simple way and then build upon that understanding one layer at a time. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Has a really "dry" sense of humor but it fits his character he will have you laughing in no time. By far through my academic career he is in the top 3 best teacher's.
Mr. B likes to teach. He likes it when his students show up for class and do well on tests. He seems impatient if you do ask for help in class and he really flies through the material, so if you have been out of school for a while definitely take a refresher course before this one. He assigns a lot of homework, so be ready. His humor is great!
Mr. Balman (a.k.a. Mr. B) is a great instructor to take for College Algebra. My Intermed. Alg. instructor told me that I had "Chose Well" for this class and was right. He was more than willing to assist students who needed help in this course. His witty sense of humor keeps you entertained throughout the entire course and will have you laughing.
BE WARNED: Does not use D2L, you will not be able to see your grades, the syllabus, etc. online (I was able to see my grade for *the online work only* in the program he used for it)! This caused huge issues for me personally, though others may be fine with it.
Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. It makes a difference when they actually CARE about the students succeeding. He gives lots of inspirational advice if you pay attention. It's a very tough class, but if you put in the work I promise you'll do great.
Best math professor I've had. Genuinely cares about his students and is very accessible outside of class. He's also a pretty funny guy which goes a long way in making calculus more palatable. His classes can be rigorous, but he's very up front with what you should expect. If you're willing to put in the work you will thoroughly enjoy his class.
Mr. B is a wonderful teacher to have. If you have to take Math 241 at JCCC, take his class. His humor and willingness to help others made the experience more memorable. The homework and the class might've been rigorous, but he made it easier. This class isn't a breeze. As long as you take the time to do hw and participate, you will be golden.
He was an excellent teacher. I took slower paced College Algebra and he was very thorough and his humor made the class more enjoyable. I would highly recommend! I hate math with a passion and he made it not too bad.
Amazing teacher, he makes math fun. I am horrible at math, and he helped me many times, understando concepts that I had a hard time grasping. I had to take this class, I am glad he was my teacher.
Professor Balman is probably the greatest professor I have ever had in my 2.5 years of college. He genuinely cares and makes sure you understand. Yes there is lots of homework, but its a math class that should be expected. If you have the chance to take his course do it. He makes math enjoyable and easy, all while making sure your prepared.
Mr. B was one of the best math professors I have ever had at JCCC. If you have the chance to take his 5 day college algebra class TAKE IT. He was so funny and made math enjoyable. Yes there is a lot of homework and tests are graded heavy, but he wants to make sure his students succeed. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
He does not explain the material thoroughly and expects to you to know things from grade school. He expects you to read his mind. When you asks questions, he does not explain and does the problem for you. It made me not want to ask any more questions. I attended every day and did all my homework and still barely passed.
He assigned a lot of homework, but, that helped me excel in the class. He does it for you, so you can succeed, and is always ready to help.
Mr. B is the single best instructor I have had for a course. Ever. He is homework heavy but this is necessary for the successful completion of any math course. I have learned more from his class than any other math course. Take 171.
He is a really tough grader and make things difficult for you to understand
Mr. B is a great math teacher, one of the best. All you need to do is show up for class, do the homework and you are sure to pass. I am terrible at math and testing, but at the end of the semester, I got a pretty good grade on my final & he brought up all my previous test to the final test score. He is very nice and wants you to succeed. TAKE HIM!
Mr. Balman is a good lecturer and he really loves calculus. Expect a hard class with lots of homework. He told us to expect 5-6 hours of homework a night, & it was like 3+ hours at least per night. I recommend getting the solutions manual, as he does grade homework. His tests are not that bad and they prepare you for the final. Some EC is offered.
Nice guy who LOVES math. Plenty of dad jokes. Lots of homework, but nothing too bad unless you procrastinate. The quizzes ARE the test. The only I thing I wish he did was to stay a little more up to date with grades since I still didn't have a grade in the class during the middle of the semester, which is tedious for those who want to drop.
Brian is certainly a unique professor. I was in his summer Calc 1 course which is rigorous. He is funny and seemingly serious at the same time; due to this, the lecture will keep you focused. He is wise and caring. If you want an easy-A this is not a class for you. If you want to do well in the rest of your math career this IS a course for you.
Awesome professor. He's hilarious, and cares about his students. He is accessible outside of class, and he explains stuff really well. He does a great job preparing you for the final
Mr B. knows what he is doing. He is an incredible teacher. He's been in this game for a long time, and he knows how to get you through it. He'll make you work for it, but as he says, you get out exactly what you put in. Homework after every class period that helps you learn. Great test reviews. Gives partial credit. Funny and smart guy. Take Mr B!
Mr. B assigned a lot of homework, but it all prepared me well for the exams. The lectures were all well done, and the note packets helped greatly. The dad jokes were also much appreciated.
By far my favorite math teacher, tring to get him for all of my math classes!! 10/10 I DO recommend this amazing teacher!!!!
Mr.B is a great professor, He does assign a lot of homework but it is not short of what you should be doing at this level. The homework you do is for your own benefit since the concepts and Rules you will be given will sometimes feel overwhelming but thats when the homework comes into play. You have to do it or you wont make it. Put the Time in!!!
This was a summer online precalc. course. Lectures and exams were done via webcam conference. Prof. Balman guided us through this comprehensive, fast-paced course in a very effective manner. He always answered questions and encouraged participation. He kept things fun and focused on what we needed to know for calculus. I highly recommend him.
Professor Balman was an amazing teacher. He is the best math teacher ive had ina while. He explains things well and has a good Amount of dad jokes. Expect an hour or 2 of homework but if you pay attention in class it will be easy and go fast.
He really cares about his students and really wants you to succeed. He routinely tells you "Once!", meaning he will get you through this class so you don't have to take it again, because he truly cares. He stayed after class if anyone had any questions. He was accessible outside of class. I was nervous at first but did end up enjoying his class.
The class is enjoyable if you genuinely enjoy math. It does get very hard so you actually have to spend hours doing the homework assigned, but simply just doing the homework carefully can get you a good grade on tests. The professor was good at teaching and his tests are just like what he teaches in class
Dropped class after 25 minutes. people could not access online textbook, said we should figure it out. First day, students asked him to slow down on the notes, told us to pick another class. has no patience when asking questions, rude, easily agitated and uses fake 'dry humor' to belittle students. I bet he is great teacher, terrible person.
His online college algebra class is the worst class I have taken at JCCC. Let it be known that I am a very hard worker and achieved an A (stressfully). He rushes through notes, does not elaborate on math processes, and is very unforgiving. Whether you are good at math or not, don't take this course. Incredibly insufficient learning material.
Anyone who gives this teacher a bad rating on here is just upset because of something petty and unrelated to Brian Balman. I dont like very many professors Ive had, and I rate most poorly. However, Brian Balman was by far my favorite teacher Ive ever had. Hes absolutely hilarious, very kind, and super reasonable with homework and exams.
Passionate about math and respects students. Encouraged questions and class participation. Stayed on the zoom call after class to answer questions. Class moved at a fast pace. Homework could take a few hours but no busy work and he would grant a few extensions. Not an easy A but if you genuinely want to learn, Professor Balman is a great choice.
I think that Prof. Balman was amazing. I took his class online and outside of getting up at 7am, I enjoyed going to class. Prof. Balman truly does care and he is always there to go out of his way to help. If you like to skip class, more than likely you will struggle because he lectures directly based on the homework. I highly recommend his class.
Mr. B was truly one of the best professors I've had. He was able to explain the content in a way that was not only engaging, but simple. He genuinely cares about his students and is always available for questions, especially if you ask him to send you a video of him completing problems you're stuck on. BUT, always do your homework. It helps!!!
I have always struggled with algebra. Mr. B is by far the best algebra professor I have ever had. He is clear when teaching and you will always know what you need to know for tests. He wants you to succeed which I can't say for most other math professors. For anyone struggling with math, take him! Lots of homework, but it helps! Promise!
LOTS of homework. Is a good teacher but moves really fast & sometimes doesn't even work the problem out but instead just has us take a picture of the work already done. Does give test reviews & never does pop quizzes. Always says what exactly will be on quizzes & gives a heads up. I can see how other would like him, he just didn't work for me.
Professor Balman is the best teacher I have ever had hands down. I came into his class "not a math person" and after taking him for College Algebra and Pre-Calc I am seeking a very math intensive degree. If I had the choice, I would have Professor Balman teach every math class I would ever take in college. I highly recommend taking this Professor.
Homework almost every night. His teaching is slow but also is very helpful at certain times. He is willing to help outside of class. Only reason I struggled was because I don't do good in trigonometry. Not a lot of tests and he shows what the whole semester consist of so you can plan ahead. Enjoyed his class but homework was annoying.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. He was super helpful with the assignments and granted extensions for when things get difficult. I wish he could teach all my math classes. He has a clear schedule and rarely switches unless class is behind. The only problem is that he waits to long to put in grades
Professor Balman is passionate about math and you can tell he truly cares about the subject and this is demonstrated through his emphatic, clear lectures. If you do what Professor Balman explicitly says to do, you should pass the class. Make sure to complete the homework in a timely manner. Work on the final review as soon as he gives it to you.
He is a very nice person and tries to give you opportunities to get better grades if you show up and participate, however, I thought his assignments were way too much and sometimes it felt like he speeded through some of the units which doesn't help when you're in a 50 minute class, it was very difficult to understand a lot of stuff.
Professor Balman is a fantastic professor. He is clear and concise on what is expected of you throughout the course. He just overall puts a smile on my face with his humor even though it is math. Class is homework heavy so be prepared to a do some. Don't really want to miss a day because then you will be behind. Your grade will reflect your effort
There are 4 tests not including the final that make up 60% of your grade. Homework problems can be a lot, so you need to plan accordingly. The textbook is $50, I used it. Quizzes are take home, and the reviews/quizzes look exactly like the test. If you study well and get to know the concepts you should be fine. I should've just studied. He's cool.
The professor himself was very nice but the way he taught wasn't very efficient. There was time consuming homework every single night. My class was only 50 minutes long so he went very fast which also didn't help.
Professor Balman is great, he really cares about his students. He teaches math as more than just a part of school, but as something used to grow your brain and help you for the rest of your life. If you don't attend class he won't dock your grade but you might miss quite a bit of content.
