DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS !!!
This is the coolest teacher ever! He is a little out there but all the more reason to take his class. People don't like him 'cause of his religious views but highly recommend!
OMG!!! He is sooooo hard and when u ask him questions,it like he leaves you even more confused. His tests are hard and dont match up with his lectures, very detailed in small things students wont catch even during reading or or in his lectures
good profeessor, just take notes, and you will be good. he is very helpful you can approach him if you have any questions. He wanted all of the class to exhale. I highly reccomend this guy. The first day of class he said "There is no such thing as a stupid question" hence showing how open he is to helping the student understand.
Bartelt is awesome! He made it clear first day saying, "This is college, act like college students. If you think this is hard, you haven't seen much yet." This class is hard but study and take down notes, and it should be less difficult. He gives out a review before the test and it is extremely helpful.
To be honest, the guy rocks. Gives great documentaries, feedbacks, help with anything you might need in class. Don't listen to the bad comments, if you want to be challenged intellectually I encourage you take his class.
His classes can be challenging but totally worth it. If yuo realize this is college, not high school, take his class. You won't regret it!
This guy is ignorant ! Don't take him, you'll be wasting your time .
Lame teacher..
he knows everything.Sometimes he might confused you, (but it is not an easy class). He makes the class fun by his lectures and he has a very different personality, he is very passianeted about his work. Some students may like him, others may not, so what this is college!take some risk in your life and get an A in the class!!!!
This guy is just way too weird. he jumps from one subject to another in no time. wether you understand or not. Very sarcastic and rude. gives way too many boring personal experience. who cares! just teach the subject! D0 N0T TAKE THIS HIPPIE, CRAZY NUT!
this teacher is way hard!! he has a lot of information to give in a short amount of time, none of which really makes it to the test anyway. unpredictable but fascinating, good class to take if you're familiar with his stuff, if not you'll be very lost.hes a hottie
He is a fair guy. Just show up to class, take good notes, study for the exams, and you're all set. I got an A. Overall, an interesting professor with a unique mindset who really cares about the student and the learning process.
This is probably the worst teacher at LACC. His classes don't make any sense. He also thinks he's too cool. Please take another class, but not with him.
Bartelt is a very intelligent professor and knows his s**t, but if you are not 100% there with lectures, reading, etc., it will be hard to pass his class. 9 chapters to remember for 1st test & another 7 for the final! Nothing in between but lectures and lab. If you can remember that much info all at once-more power to you!
Tough professor but very interesting. If you want a college level class that is very challenging, I highly recommend him. He is totally fair, too, as long as you do the work he requires. You'll get a lot out of this class! I learned a lot!
Bartlet is an Amazing Teacher, not only does he make Anthropology interesting, he relates the information to us generation Y's clearly. because of this class my mind has expanded! take this class if you really want to learn. i would not suggest him if your looking for an easy grade.
Mr. B is passionate about the subject matter and wants his students to be too. He has very strong personal opinions that he brings into the classroom. I found him to be intimidating and condescending when I asked questions. Detailed notetaking, attention to labs, and comprehension of the material are necessary to pass this class.
go to class everyday, read the book, ask questions... and if you don't understand ask him again, he will help you out if you put effort. The labs are very fun! I wished we had more than 4, interestings movies, lectures.... BUT if you are a LAZY student, don't event enroll in this class!! Anthropology requires thinking and personal effort! great cla
Does anyone know the name of the book Mr. B is using for Anthropology 102??....Thanks! I highly recommend his anthropology 101 class...very interesting!
Does anyone know the name Mr. B is using for his Anthropology 102 class?....I recommened this class to everyone who loves adventures and learning about new things, you must have an open mind too, take this class, its fun!
This is really interesting class to those who are interested in knowing different culture and religion. The test are based heavily on lectures so make sure to pay attention. The report is kinda difficult to go about so make sure to do it on daily basis instead of craming it. because it shows
AMAZING professor. Plenty of real world anthropology experience. Stimulating lectures. The only kind of person who would call this man 'ignorant' on here must be extremely ignorant themselves. Right wing people, those that don't accept evolution, and jesus freaks probably won't like him. Just read the book and take notes. Simple.
I gave Bartelt a positive review while halfway through the course. I have now finished the course & take that back. The midterm was difficult. He gave little to no review for it, you just have to read EVERYTHING. His lectures are interesting but don't follow the book AT ALL. Midterm + final paper/presentation make your ENTIRE grade. Ignores emails.
If you take good notes and read the book you will be fine. He can be a little touchy at times, but he is very knowledgeable. His mid term and final can be hard if you don't study. If you show up to class and study you will be fine. Attendance is key in Dr B's class. Work for that A!
super fast, very exciting class at a genius level---amazing, will change your world view---study!---super fun, every day large amounts of new material, extremely challenging but worth it!!!
He knows and loves what he does. Excellent teacher. It's not hard to get a good grade.
Great person and great professor. He is clear what he wants and gives a lot of very interesting information. The best class I ve ever took. Hoping also to take Anthro 102 with him!!! Thnx Professor Bartelt.
great teacher. you cat argue against that point logically. if you dont like him then you got offended by something he said about religion or something similar. he breaks everything down perfectly, but you need to take great notes and give 100% effort. great teacher if you want to learn and open minded bad if your super religious aka close minded.
First day of class I really thought I was going to like this guy; he's hip and out there etc., whatever, and has lived an interesting life. I loved and still love listening to his personal anecdotes. With that said, he can be condescending and rude like someone mentioned, so it's hard for me (personally) to approach him and ask questions. Caution!
I did not like Anthro before taking his class. Yes, he does come off negative and treat students like they have learning disabilities... But he has found a way to completely intrigue students, very passionate about subject. Just don't miss class a lot on tests is from class notes. Not so difficult once you get into it. I completely recommend him.
Great teacher. The only problem is he talks to fast never really understood him, to take his Anthro102 class i notice i must need a tape recorder thats how fast he moved in the lectures honestly if you can write clear notes by hearing a teacher talk then this may be the class for you!
Knows the subject but can be biased. He tells students never to put down others culture or religions but he always talks smack about Christians. Although I'm an agnostic its really not cool when he talks smack about others. Other than that he moves through the material fast but his test are straight forward and he prepares you for the tests.
This class isn't difficult, it just isn't easy. Don't add this class if you're a slacker or if you take offense to things easily. You need to study for the exams. Bartlet is a wonderful professor and an amazing hominid.
Anthropology is hard + difficult tests, but he is a good teacher!
His class is really hard, but it's very interesting! you don't really have to buy a textbook. Most tests are based on lecture so you should take a note in every class! First, I got F on mid-term, but I worked really hard on my presentation and essay so finally I got B! If you have any problems or questions, you should talk to him.He will help you!

Don't miss because his lectures are very informative He doesn't take roll only in the beginning but you should particiopate in class. It's part of your grade. I enjoyed the class but take good notes.
I learned so much in this class. He has a great way of engaging the room and making the subject interesting. That said, the class was hard and I worked my ass off for my grade! He grades on a curve and is really fair, constantly checks in with the class to ask if everyone is getting it, and related the material to everyday life. Very good class!
He's a Hard A__. If you've been spoonfeed your whole life, He will be your Wake up call. If you want an engaging thought provoking class that will have you thinking in ways you didn't imagine possible, then take this class. If youmiss lectures you will be at a loss come exam time. Engage yourself in the lectures as well! Take Notes & Read thebook
I had Bartlet for both 101 and 102. His classes were enjoyable and interesting. His biggest fault is that he is very set in his beliefs= if you disagree with him you are wrong. The tests are hard to study for because of the large amount of material that is covered. Decent classes, but I wouldn't recommend taking him.
Good teacher, class attendance is NOT mandatory but the notes are crucial and there will never be anything on the test he did not explain in class, so dnt be absent. the textbook is necessary, he expects you to have read what he will discuss in class. the videos he shows are imp. take notes on the discussions that follow these. nice to look at.
He teaches the class in a great way. There are many times when he'll crack a joke and it's what makes class fun. He is a hard A, because he requires short answer responses, and essays. But is that why you're really going to choose a professor. Based on their tests? His class is easy as long as you read and pay attention to notes and discussions.
I was really interested in anthropology before I took this class, but Bartelt really turned me off to the whole subject. He thinks he is so cool, but really he is just another pretentious hippie. He thinks he is god's gift to academia, but I didn't learn anything from him.
I took anthro to fulfill IGETC, but his passion & intelligence were inspiring. He's a bit intimidating so I was scared to ask questions, but he is clear and helpful. A little difficult, at least as far as LACC goes (so, not far). He favors short essays to multiple choice tests. Book isn't mandatory, but helpful. Just attend lecture and take notes!
The absolute most inspiring intellingent professors of my entire college career. I finished the class last semester but remain inspired by Dr. Bartelt's passion. Definately reccomend this class to anyone taking Anthro 101 or 102
Dr. Bartelt is one of the most inspiring professor on LACC. He is passionate in what he teaches. If you take his 101 class I recommend you come prepared, the text is a bit difficult but it is worth the knowledge. Plus take Notes, their more helpful then the text.
Pay attention in lecture & take extensive notes! Perhaps, the only downside of Bartelt is that he is VERY narrow-minded with his opinions and is EASILY enraged when a student doesn't accept them. Other than that, he's an extremely passionate professor and he has an attention-grabbing teaching technique. Recommended.
Cute:) but pretty narrow- minded. A good teacher, he wont BS you. He is actually doing you a favor by preparing you for four year schools and not bypassing your education. He is nice to look at and charming at times. But stubborn. Just keeping you honest.
I think Professor Bartelt is probably one of the very few teachers at LACC that actually does his job. I think people take him for granted because he gives you the real deal. He gives you a COLLEGE education. He isn?t into notes or busywork like other professors that is in ways reminiscent of high school. No, he actually goes out of his way and put
All too often, community college students expect the teacher to work for 'them.' They are coddled and given leeway on far too many infractions such as tardiness or paying attention in class. The fact that Prof. Bartlet not only doesn't tolerate such laziness but calls it out? Refreshing to say the least. The most passionate teacher I've had at LACC
One of my favorite professors at LACC. Straight-forward, down to earth, intelligent, and challenging.
Ok the class is hard, but only if you don't go to lectures or read the book. He teaches to a high level and its up to the students to keep up. He is kinda hot in a dreadlocked hippyish way, which is nice.
I found Dr Bartelt to be pretty easy and my most recent class with him was fun. He is very accommodating to students needs and is willing to spend extra office hours making sure his students understand the material. He is very passionate (about anthropology) and wants to share his experience with his students.
Midterm, essay, and final only. Although he is very passionate and educated about Anthro, he is also VERY unorganized and arrogant. He does not follow his own syllabus or dead lines and ridicules students when they ask questions, than wonders why people don't participate. The class is easy if you attend regularly (he does not take attendance).
This class is not easy, but he is very passionate and the material that you need to know for test are taught. He will not open door if late first two weeks. Midterm, Zoo paper, Final, short research paper. Not impossible to receive an A if you study lecture notes, and read. He is helpful in office hours, and attractive in a different but good way!
You should never judge a book by it's cover. Professor Bartelt knows a lot more than you think.
Very intelligent professor and interesting class. I really liked his teaching style. he only takes the attendence on first days, hedoesn't care if you attend or not, but if you don't listen to his lectures and read the book you won't pass the class. The midterms are not easy but the reasearch paper and zoo assignment will help alot.Highly recomend
Pro.Bartelt is the best at Lacc. knowledgable on the subject, extremely helpful when u have a question. He want u to understand at deep level not memorizing it. Midterm, Final, zoo trip and other short disscusions makes up ur grade.Read the book n take note. Plz respect ur prof. n the students. Some ppl just keep on interrupting n wasting time.
I hope this comment is not deleted this time.Prof has a horrible attitude w students. He doesnt treat us well because he assumes ALL of us are lazy.Students dont participate because he intimidates us.He replies to questions as if we were stupid. He's disorganized and lectures have lots of grammatical issues that make it uncomprehensible.Horrible prof
Straight to the point, respect him, hell respect you. Hes knowledgeable and likes challenges. Make sure to ask for permission if you want to record his lecture. Very passionate about what he does. Interesting person!!!
This professor is a total awful, and denies the facts he doesn't like!
Grades on a whim. Unorganized. He even lost a students midterm test and just gave him a B when he asked for it back. Seriously true story. Horrible DO NOT TAKE.
Dr. Bartelt is extremely passionate about what he teaches. He requires students to work and learn. So..he is intimidating and sometimes mean. If he sees participation he'll respect you that much more. This class does require interest and work! Read, read, read and take notes! Attendance is necessary. You need to take notes to study for the final.
Much writing required. Little feedback. I hope everyone evolves into Prof. Bartelt, it would be a much more positive world.
Very interesting class! Lectures are good, but he is HORRIBLE at communicating with his online students. I had emailed him at least 10 times through out the semester ( and I was in the short term class so everything is on a very short time budget) and he never got back to me once. Very disappointing! Many other students in my class said the same!
My first class, Cultural Anth. was a wonderful and exciting class covering all aspects of the most prominent social cultures of the world. Dr. Bartelt uses visual aids such as personal videos and documentary videos. I was particularly interested in a presentation on Gay men in New York who celebrate each year with a drag show.
His first words on the first day are: Welcome everyone. I want you to know that this class is taught at the University level. If you feel you may have problems, you might consider choosing another professor. I have had 3 semesters with him. I am looking so forward to next semester with him. We have become friends. I am honored.
He is good professor, he will teach you what you need to know about Anthropology. But I have to advise you that he is not an easy teacher for those who do not like to study. He is really clear with his class,he states since the first day what he expects from everybody. He does not take roll at all. If you really want to learn take this class.
He is real strict regarding attendance, and expects the whole class to engage in discussion. We got an extra assignment since people were not participating. He also switched the final paper date so be flexbile. Class is hybrid lecture/online. For midterm you have to read book, but not for final. Kind of moody too. Not a pushover, study!
He is not easy, but if you study, you will pass the class. It is a really good class. If you want to challenge yourself, take it!
Don't take Bartelt!!! He knows a lot, but he has no respect for his students.
I loved this class. I took it online and I got a good grade. I believe he is very smart and made me think a lot. Just read his assignments very well so you are able to answer the discussion and essay questions. He gives great feedback which makes it easy to know what he wants.
He is really knows a lot about the topic but he does not respect students. He is always yelling out. DO NOT TAKE HIM. I made a big mistake.
He is an intelligent man there is no denying that but arrogant and very unhelpful I was scared to give my opinion because what I said was never up to his standards, and he is always right, beside his arrogant personality, it actually is a very interesting class and I did learn a lot read the book come to class and pay attention
He is a good instructor. He is crystal clear on all his points and opinions. I took him for a winter course and although it was a lot of information, his lectures were coherent and easy to follow. Now, his attitude is a turnoff to most people. I did not talk much because I did not want to sound stupid.
He is not crystal clear at all. If you want to feel stupid in a class, take Dr. Bartelt :)
Getting an A or a B in Dr. Bartelt's class is not an easy task. He teaches the class at a University level. Don't pay attention to his attitude, he has the right to be who he is, pay attention to the class, pay attention to his lecture, that's it. We are not in college to like or dislike professors, we are there to learn...
Great professor, really knows his subject. He does seem to have a low tolerance for ignorance so make sure to read, or eles you wont have a pleasant time in his class. Read and youll be fine! Overall, I loved every minute in his class.
be careful if you are a good student just do your work and don't mess around; he has a really bad reputation at school. He does not behave as a professor. He uses school and students.
Worst professor ever :(
grades on a whim! very unorganized professor.
Dr.Bartelt knows his stuff. He is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable about each subject he teaches. I can understand why students would feel intimidated to speak, as he can come off as arrogant, but he likes participation. Attend every class and take notes. No homework. Few tests (essay questions/multiple choice. Take him if you want to learn.
Take his classes in person. If you're interested in non-Westernized ideals (respectfully, I don't mean appropriating other cultures), you'll love his class. He discusses the different states of consciousness and how to reach them, and more. Midterm is 7 essay questions. Final is creating your own religion and performing a ritual with your group.
He is very arrogant and self-centered. Students felt intimidated to make question because he knows everything. I have serious doubts of students who emphasize his greatness.
His class was alright, but don't take it so lightly. Reading the books are important and to make it easier for you, find your interest about his class. And don't be thinking that taking this class will be like hogwarts. We had a lot of jokes the First day. There are some Interesting Facts in this class though.
It was all bogus. Class is disorganized, professor grades assignments in the last minute, is very bias, and is unclear with what he wants.
Just not organized
Prof Bartelt is not the classic american college professor, as he doesn't teach something that can be so easily defined into couple paragraphs. His class is for students determined to open their minds and put in discussion everything they know about human evolution and culture. The topics that are brought up are up to date, interesting and spicy.
Great teacher, straight forward. Very direct, he doesn't tolerate people that are not respectful during lessons. Kicks out people that sleep or that use cellphones. He wants everyone to participate and have an opinion. He stimulates debate, communication, ideas. Analyzed subjects are super interesting. This class will make you a better human being
You never get a chance to talk to him. He never responds to your questions for the assignments. And if he did, it's after the assignment was due.
He seems like a good professor but not really. Worst instructor I ever had.
Although I received a B in this course, I have to say, this professor is extremely inappropriate, rude, and useless.
He is very smart and educated. But he thinks that he is always right and you are wrong. NOT a good experience.
Unless you have all week to dedicate to his class do not take it. He has a lot of work for you, this would be a course for someone interested in the subject, he does a very bad job motivating students to get into the topic.
He is rude and talks down to everyone. ohh and please dont have any kind of opinion because if it does not correspond to his you will regret saying it.
He's a good professor. Very laxed however some take advantage by not coming to class prepared and engaged. Thats all he wants! You gotta give a little to get a little people. Very simple approach no curveballs besides the quizzes (which are often warranted) All of his courses are interesting to say the least although Anthro 101 is a bit more complex because of the science involved.
The professor is really unorganized and doesn't explain any of the readings into depth. It was a terrible class and there are only two unclear essays and a final.
Terrible teacher.
I took Bartelt this semester, but I wouldn't take him again. This guy is not an easy professor dudes; plus he uses his class as a sort of psychotherapy.
He's a professor who loves what he's teaching. He can be a bit to handle, but he cares about you and if you are getting it. He's a little intimidating at times, but always willing to help.
I wouldn't take professor Bartelt again.
The worst professor ever. I will never take any class with this teacher again even if they guarantee me an admission for Anthropology school.
Inspirational amazing professor who's making the world a better place by putting some spice into your young brain. He makes you think critically and teaches you how to think of the world in a global perspective
This is the worst teacher I ever had.
There's no way of tracing your grade and really no way of knowing what he wants. He also has a huge ego, and doesn't respect students at all. He is a very unpleasant man. He made me question the validity of the entire discipline of anthropology. Avoid him like a plague. I have never ever felt so discouraged by a teacher. He is condescending.
This professor seems to think that, even though his class is for college students, he is talking to postdocs and frequently starts yelling when people don't know the answers to his, often times absurdly questions. To make matters worse he creates an atmosphere so tense in the class, nobody wants to answer him - which led him to get furious.
Don't take him. He's arrogant and hot headed. I'm surprised he's allowed to teach.
The thing about Professor Bartelt: he has 15 years of higher education from USC in his field. He's incredibly intelligent and passionate about Anthropology. During his class, you may lose sight of his humanity (yes, I see the irony) due to his intensity on the subject. Stop whining, read, do the little work he asks of, and you'll survive. Barely.
I read some of the comments, I still took him, big mistake!
This is what an actual college course is like. There's no hand-holding, no easy grades, and you actually have to read. If you can do that, you can pass. As for the ridiculing students, some of the questions he gets are so annoying and obnoxious it would irritate anyone. If you want to actually learn, take it. If you want to be babied, don't.
took 121102 same semester yow said he wouldn't spoon feed & didn't. mean moody snappy knows his stuff. I actually enjoyed lectures & retained info. girls HE thinks are cute got As. operative words HE thinks. unfair but ... lots of reading writing group project in 121. hes interesting definitely prepares you for university & for that I thank him.
Dr. Bartelt is not the type of professor to sugar coat the students lack of reading or class participation. Some people don't like his style because he is straight forward and will get in your face, at times this can be intimidating. Never the less as a student in his class you get respect by putting in work, being opinionated. Plain and simple.
One word. Arrogant. Really smart man but really such an meanie when he is in a bad mood. He is a good professor and he is fair but he really needs to work on his personality. All his classes require a fair amount of reading and of work. You've been warned. Oh, and he'll make you feel stupid when you ask questions. :(
Worst teacher I ever had.
honestly, this professor is a good teacher. he may be mean at times but if you show determination he will give you a chance. when he gets upset it is frustrating to everyone.
The worst instructor at LACC. You will regret taking him as professor. He intimidates students then he wonders why they don't participate. I would not take him again.
Terrible teaching method. Elitist attitude.
extremely knowledgable and cultured man screams at his students (often unnecessarily) very clear about what he expects, straight forward shares truly inspiring stories about his travels, I respect him highly i enjoyed his lectures very much, one of my favorite classes i've ever taken
He's helpful if we have questions. He is very straight forward and sticks to the syllabus. Not sure why students complain I mean do you want him to spoon feed you? The professor is one of my favorites that I have had at LACC. He is very resourceful. His power-point are very helpful. Yes the tests are hard but doable. Just study! U cannot wing it.
He's tough and yes he is arrogant. I never read this and took his class. And yes he does have 15+ years experience in anthropology. And heck yeah, I would be too. He's passionate about his craft - granted. informative classes, lectures. Do the reading and ask questions you'll pass the class.
I took Dr. Bartelt online and despite what others say, he was very helpful and the material was interesting. The test are tough but if you study the modules, you should pass. His test also consists of essay questions so organize your time well. The only negative is that he takes a while to grade, other than that, his course was great.
Great instructor. Very helpful and does not joke around with other material you won't need. Very clear and tells you what to expect for texts and final. He is cares about his students passing, but you do have to study and work hard for it. Would take again.
Are you kidding me how is his overall rating a B it should be an A++++. He's an amazing teacher and he's clearly a very intelligent human being to begin with. Never got to complete his class but I will def take it next semester. Can't wait everything that comes out his mouth is pure bliss. He's my favorite scientist fer sure!
One of the best professors at LACC. He teaches at the UC level. Be ready to read and think CRITICALLY. I took all his classes and they weren't easy but not too difficult and I got A's in all of them. Do the reading, do the assignments, and study for the tests. simple as that.. you may even get the chance to study abroad.
Not a good professor at all. Takes a verrrrrrry looooong time to get your grades back. Does not responds to questions in a timely fashion. Gives only two tests the mid-term and final. But they are hard, very hard. Gives study guides but only a few questions on the study guide are even on the tests. Find another instructor to take this course with
Takes a while to grade homework so you're going through the class not knowing how well you're doing. Test are hard, the study guide was no help. He's absent from online a lot so it's hard getting any questions answered. Left his students worrying about the Final that never posted. Pretty much exactly how the last person described it.
He's a great teacher with a wealth of knowledge on the subject. However, don't try to question his opinions on certain things. Just sit back, do the work and you'll get an A
He's an amazing professor. He is tough, but his experience in West Africa is very relevant for this class. Read the book, go to class, take notes and you will be able to pass. My life changed completely after taking Anth121. If you are planning to take this class be prepared to open your mind. It's a lot of reading but you will learn!
He is a brilliant man, but very arrogant. He hate whenever student ask questions and is all over the place when it comes to test(which are very hard and the study guide does not help). DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
One of those classes where you listen to the lecture and you'll pretty much be good to go. I skimmed through the book before exams and he allowed notes for the midterm! Sometimes he gets really into it and talks quickly but if you just ask him to repeat it he will. He's really interesting and passionate about what he teaches. You'll never be bored.
Professor B. Is a awesome teacher he wants you to be open minded in this class to not center a particular world view in the class, yes you have to read to keep up with the lectures he does not read from the book he wants u to engage him ask questions participate he has a PhD in this field take advantage not many community colleges do.
If you go to college to learn and prepare yourself for a life of thinking I ABSOLUTELY SAY TAKE THIS MAN'S CLASS!!! if you are slugging through life then I'd probably take a Commo 101 class. this man is passionate, loves his students, loves intelligent let me stress the word intelligent dialogue, and simply put is THE MAN!!!! do your best!!!
The professor is knowledgeable in his field, as any professor should be, but he is arrogant. Incorrect responses in class are borderline mocked by the professor which feeds into a cycle of no one wanting to answer his questions, which causes him to insult the class. He will ask for an opinion in a paper and dock points if it differs from his own.
Dr. B's anthropological field experience is extremely relevant to the class material, and you will quickly be able to tell that he knows what he is talking about. You won't really need the book, except to type a few essays about a few articles, but that can vary depending on his mood. The biggest thing is the field work. Do that right and you pass.
Dr. Bartelt is challenging and a bit arrogant, but interesting and brilliant as well. Midterm was tricky, but he graded it on a curve and allowed an open notes final, which was much easier. Overall, one of my favorite professors because he is a real anthropologist who has a lot of experience in the field. Recommended for serious students.
Bartelt is one of those professors that rubs you the wrong way at first but then you come to realize that most of the perceived arrogance is caused by years of trying to teach his passion to students that aren't willing to either put the work in or put their beliefs aside. He's super passionate and inspiring. Class isnt easy so you must work.
He has combined anthropology with philosophy, just agree with his opinion (philosophy) and summarize it in your own words and I guarantee ull pass
I would not recommend this instructor, the learning objective doesn't match the grading criteria. He's done meaningful work in his field, but he may not be the best teacher though.
No direct (right/wrong) answers, it's all based on your understanding of his presentation. But if you disagree with his views you will fail!!!! Do not take this class, unless you are easily influenced and believe EVERYTHING a stranger tells you.
Just read the book, do homework, participate in class and study for the midterm and the final! This class is very easy just as long as you do all of the above. Great Professor. I might not agree with a lot of his religious and political views, but you can't deny the fact that he knows what he's talking about when it comes to Anthropology.
Professor Bartelt was by far one of my favorite professors to listen to. He does not write down anything on the board unless it is confusing or a hard word to spell because he expects everyone to pay attention to his lectures and take notes from listening. Very few tests and homework and one big project at the end. Very interesting lecturer!
First things first, Professor Bartelt teaches at a UC level. If you want an easy A, do not take this class. This is college, you need to work for the grade you want. Also, it can be quite an enjoyable class for you if you actually do the readings! He gets annoyed and angry when people don't do the readings because you're expected to participate!
A lot of people have issues with his style but I find him to be refreshing. He clearly knows what he is talking about and is passionate. Attendance is not required but he usually allows open notes tests so if you're not there you're SOL. Participate. visit his office. He likes people who make effort. Ethnography is most important part of grade.
This class was hard specially the Midterm and Final.. The Exam consist of Essay question and 2 hours is not enough time. This class is not easy at all. :-/
Not worth taking this class even though Professor Bartelt is a nice guy. He infact teaches in a UC level like said. He even clarifys he doesn't give an easy A. Prepare yourself for this class with lots of reading. Although there is only about 2 papers to do he does takes it seriously. And he doesnt explain twice on lectures or writes it down.
Good lectures. If you have a question or comment, he hears then out and answers nicely. However, he's extremely arrogant and exams are EXTREMELY tough. Most people take him because there's like 2 antho profs & the other one is too early, BUT TAKE THE OTHER ONE. I regret taking him despite reading these reviews all because I wanted to sleep in.
Brian Bartelt has displayed his inability to teach. I regret ever knowing that such a teacher exists. He is cruel and does so because he knows he is not being watched by his peers or by a higher power in the education system. At first he was a good teacher, but then he shows his true colors when he insults his students constantly.
Brian Bartelt is part of the problem that most students face in America. He belittles his students right before his Midterm, if you take his course you will see what I mean. He is incredibly mean and should not be allowed to be an educator!
I just think the world of this man! if you are a sheeple don't take this class. if you are a sheeple just be able to back your stance with some thought. if you want to be liked drop out of college and find a full time social media job.
I would never take this class again, or any class taught by him. Nor would I recommend it to anyone. Ever.
I am an international student, I honestly dont understand all the awful comments HERE. English is not my first language and Dr Bartel made it perfectly clear, amount of work is correct, 5 papers, 1 midterm in class, a fieldwork project due at the very end of the semester (very interesting bc you chose your topic)1 take home finl EXCELENT TEACHER !
Very educated man teaching a wildly interesting subject. That said, this guy is the worst educator I have ever encountered. Regardless of earning an A, I would NEVER recommend him nor take another class with him. Bartelt should be doing research not teaching. Hes degrading, demeaning, and discouraging; just awful, destroys all possible enjoyment!
Alright, where do I begin? Professor Bartelt is phenomenal. But he takes to few, and few take to him. If you aren't interested in anthropology and you're not very bright, don't take him. If you are sensitive, take a different teacher. If you are willing to listen, you will learn more in this class than any other, and your life will be changed.
This class it's self isn't hard but he is not a very encouraging professor. He's very passionate about Anthropology but sometimes he is just rude. He constantly told the class how we were all failing and then would say how he hates millennial because of things like sagging pants. Take a different professor.
Dr. Bartelt is not that evil y'all, calm down. HOWEVER, he could be tough when it comes to midterms and finals. Oh yeah, read the book and do your assignments. This is college, not high school, so critical thinking matters! His passion for Anthropology has given me some much insight and understanding towards the world we live in.
hes very passionate about what he teaches and it shows. Yes youre encouraged to participate in class and if you comment or say something that isnt correct he will correct You BECAUSE thats what professors are supposed to do. Grow up, take notes, and pay attention; this man has been doing this for decades unlike most of us taking his class.
Lets be honest if you complain you dont belong in college
Professor Bartelt is passionate and believes in education as a tool of empowerment. He does not tolerates useless slubs going to school just to get financial aid. it is funny how stupid people think the cause of their stupidity is in the teachers expecting them to excel. Don't take Bartelt's class if you don't want to put effort to learn and grow.
Prof. Bartelt is a very intelligent professor, however his style of teaching is not for everyone especially if you are not one who shows up to class regularly. If you reach out to him for help and participate in class, you won't have a hard time. If you are showing disrespect or loss of interest in his lectures, you will have a harder time passing.
He is a very nice and passionate professor. However, he has a pretty unique teaching style. It is imperative to show up to class and study hard. It is a fun class as long as you are willing to put the effort in to learn. His class can be heavy so just make sure to take that into account as you plan your classes.
I do not understand why everyone is hating on Dr. B, he is one of the best professors I've ever taken, I feel like his lectures turned my worldview around, I've taken all of the classes he offers and I would take them over again. Don't be sensitive, show up to class, don't be afraid to reach out to him and learn and he's amazing and very helpful!
His class seems very easy. You have to make sure you attend every single class. You also have to read the material before the next class. He does talk and can sometimes go off topic and really get into his lecture. this class wasn't for me. I'm a visual learner and his teaching style is more of just talking.
Don't like Dr. Bartelt? I'm immediately wary. This man is brilliant beyond belief - an absolute gold mine of wisdom and experience & if you're smart enough, you'll take full advantage. There isn't enough space here to gush - but if you're a true academic, you'd be doing yourself a grave disservice to miss the experience that is this professor.
So I took the course this summer its only 5 weeks, it took tell week 3 for the class to figure out he didn't actually want our opinions, he wanted his own opinion written back to him. which made it hard to give feedback for points.
He gave me a 6/10 on a discussion, basically because I don't share his beliefs. The prompt was if creationism should be taught in schools. Discussions should not have a right or wrong answer, and yet I was penalized for saying it's good to show both sides and let people decide what makes more sense to them. He was sort of rude about it as well.
He's highly intelligent and passionate about his field of study. He doesn't take attendance and assigns very little homework, but you're expected to be self-driven and stay on top of your work. Loosely structured course with a few quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final, and 1 project. He's fair, and only tests on things he's covered in class, so don't skip.
Bartelt is the best that LACC has to offer. He tends to be very direct which can be intimidating. If he disagrees with you, you'll definitely know it so It's important to back your opinions with solid reasoning and get ready to engage in class. He is lecture heavy, but it's college so if you plan on advancing, its probably best to acclimate
Dr. Bartelt is the best anthropology professor! He is very passionate about his field, and his lectures are very insightful. Get ready to read and take notes! Many people get thrown off by his straightforward demeanor, but it's because he doesn't have time to deal with nonsense. It was a good class to take during this covid transition
very straight forward about the course syllabus and he sticks to it. Lectures were optional but if you went it always helped to talk about the previous modules and better your understanding. Very accommodating. Replies fast to emails and is always there to help. Easy class if you stay ontop of readings. He is very passionate and encourages debate
replies to emails fast. outlines course very clearly. grades fairly. easy quizzes and tests. modules he writes covers everything. one research essay where he gives really good feedback. lectures optional but it helps to talk about material and he tells interesting stories. stay ontop of your work, read the modules and you'll do really good
Fascinating professor; down to earth and passionate about anthropology. He seems to care about his students, or at least the ones who actually want to take the class. Participate, read all the material he gives and ask for help if you need it, he's a good human and a great teacher. Would take his class again.
Expectations are not clear, and the pedagogy style creates an environment where you cannot ask questions in class without being unpredictably belittled. I did not enjoy the communication method, and I felt that it perpetuates a poor example of how people should respect each other in academia resulting in a devalued learning experience.
He makes his class as difficult as possible for his own ego. He clearly has a lot to prove as the only anthropology professor at LACC. Trust the way he behaves, not what he says. He belittles students who ask questions to draw attention away from his poor teaching. He's a career student who disrespects other responsibilities & differing opinions.
Needs improvement on his communication with students. No clear grading policy. Questions posed for discussion posts are highly specific to respond to. Does not offer more than 24-hour period for tests/quizzes (this is an online course). Does not offer a prompt response if there is an issue. I had gotten the impression I was bothering him w/ ?'s.
I took Anthro 101 and Anthro of Religion and enjoyed them both- particularly the religion course. I will admit Prof Bartlet is intimidating but his lectures and personal history are fascinating. You will definitely need to do the reading and come correct with any essays. These courses are not "easy A" situations but you'll be fine if engaged.
This is a fully online course with no meetings. Not a bad professor, not much homework, but it seems that he grades the discussions based off his own beliefs. I have received lower grades on discussion questions and responses from him that suggest he disagrees with me. A weird way to grade. Still passed the class.
Professor Bartelt is knowledgeable, but can be rigid in his views. The course workload is manageable, but discussions may be graded based on alignment with his beliefs. unstuck study proved helpful for study prep.
