Good guy, will work with you
Brian is a cool prof. with a wry sense of humor.
He uses a lot of high tech to make the class interesting. He is funny with a dry sense of humor. He is not very flexible when it comes to tests, but they are fair. If you study, you will do fine. If you don't, then yeah, you'll do bad.
bates is very chill guy..easy A as long as you do all the work..very nice guy just show up youll be fine..he even doennt care if you turn in stuff late
Very fun and laid back professor. Gets the info across without boring the students.
Bates is a cool laid back professor. As long as the work is done and you have good attendance, you can pass the class with a good grade!
Boring! I had to fight off sleep every class! He speaks in monotone and can be quite repetitive.
Not boring at all. He has quite a wealth of knowledge and is very good at making the information easy to understand. Recommend.
likes what he does
Excellent professor. Very knowledgeable and helpful.
I definitely recommend Bates. This is one of the most interesting profs and classes I've taken.
it's easy to see through his teaching that he loves the subject, and makes his students enjoy humanities as well.
One of the best teachers at ARC. Very interesting and open minded to varying opinions. I learned so much from him!
Mr. Bates is very help and cares deeply that his students really learn something newfrom him. I really like him, even though this isnot a subject I am wild about.
doesnt cover all material, and what he does cover is like, here look at slides of famous paintings for an hour. then he gives 5 page inclass essays for exams. plus he's allllllways late to class. recommend different prof.
Mr. Bates has a natural passion for teaching, and for engendering class discussion. He is so well read that you may notice that he sometimes 'prioritizes' his response to a student's question--based on which source(book, etc.)he chooses to feature.
Very engaging! He knows his stuff and I learned a lot from him. He is extremely helpful and desires to help you succeed. I highly recommend him!
Prof. Bates has a good personality and is knowledgeable about the subject. He is one of the most lenient professors I have ever had and doesn't mind if you turn in assignments late. The midterm and final make up 2/3 of your grade. Tests aren't too difficult, but they are hard to study for since you don't exactly know what to study. Know everything!
He's a nice guy but his class is BORING. Tests and quizes are not from book but form his notes. Unfortunately he doesn't write his note down so you ahve to be a good note taker. It's a pretty easy class.
He is an excellent teacher! I really enjoyed his classes. He explains assignments well and is very informative and knowledgable about Humanities. I learned a lot from him.
HE IS A GREAT GUY AND WILL EXPLAIN THINGS TO YOU IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. HE IS EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGABLE IN HIS FIELD AND IS EAGER TO SHARE IT WITH YOU
I have taken several classes from Bates and really enjoyed all of them. He's one of those teachers who really loves what they are teaching, and it shows. Sometimes he gets involved in something and the class gets a little behind schedule, but he's still a great teacher to take. He goes out of his way to make class interesting.
I love Prof. Bates. He's super nice. If you get a chance to take one of his classes, do it. His curriculum is really well put-together and interesting, especially if you're into art.
This class was Great. The subject material was borning as hell. Brian was good at letting you know what was going to be on the test... (you have to pay a little attention in class).... but over all the class was a good exp. for me. I would take the class a

Brian is one of the best teachers I have had and has inspired me to want to teach humanities. He is VERY passionate about what he teaches and always creates some interesting discussion. I have taken all of the classes he teaches and loved all of them (although his Humanities of the Americas is the most challenging, as he designed the course). My overall favorite of Brian's classes is the first six week HUM 494 in the Fall semester, in which we discuss theater and go to Ashland.
Brian Bates is an excellent professor. He definitely has an interest in the subject he teaches and uses a variety of media in order to teach his students. He has sparked in me an interest to know more about Greek and Roman art and literature, and about Classical Humanities in general. I would definitely recommend this professor. He's awesome.
He reflected his interest in the subject and made it exciting for students. I also enjoyed his williness to encourage and accept extra credit by attending play/musicals/etc. outside of the classroom.
He's a fantastic instructor, passionate about his subject (as well as an expert in it). Very pleasant and likeable person. Show interest in his class, do the reading and prep for tests, and you'll do fine. He's definitely one of the most inspirational instructors I've ever had; his enthusiasm for the arts/culture is contagious.
I would find another professor for this class if you would like to emphasize a couple of topics rather than a 100. He bounces around too much, which makes you lose your interest fast. If you plan on making this class your life, you'll be his best friend! Just have a study group everyday after class and read the material at least twice every time...
Professor Bates is a really nice man. Sadly, his class is extremely unorganized with multiple poems, stories, artists, paintings that we had to know like the back of our hands. Extra credit is a joke and doesn't help grade at all. Seemed easy at first but got difficult quickly, and a class that was full with about 40 people dropped to about 15.
Cool teacher. Just stay on track and you will get an easy A. His lectures are fun and not boring at all. I would recommend him for this class again for anyone. Just read the material and do your homework and you can get an easy A.
I liked him. He was friendly, and his art lectures were very interesting and knowledgeable. There was a lot going on, books, music, art, philosophy, if you skipped classes you might get lost. I easily passed by just showing up and doing the reading. He is very accommodating to students who miss quizes, and provides opportunities for extra credit.
He's passionate about the subject matter, but went though a lot of different stuff too fast. Learning names was too dificult, and lots of stuff to memorize. Shows too many slide shows which put you to sleep. But all considereing, he did get me kinda interested in some of the material.
Really easy. I missed two weeks of class (which included the midterm) and he let me make it up with no questions asked. Lectures are pretty boring even though the subject matter is really interesting. I'd still recommend him.
Good teacher. Interesting class. Pay attention to what he says in class as it will be what is mainly on the tests and quizes. Very fair teacher, very fair class. Your grade will be a reflection of how often you showed up and payed attention.
Bates was a fantastic teacher who grabbed my attention with his passion for the subject. Take notes on his lectures and you will do well. I am going to take another hum class with him even though I dont need it, its just he was so good. Really enjoyed this teacher.
Mr. Bates wants you to succeed! If you make the effort and do the reading you will pass this class. Just pay attention and take notes. The tests are based directly on what is covered in class and in the books. I would definitley recommend this class!
His class is a lot of fun. Come to class and at the end of your college career when you go backpacking around the world, you will be able to apply the knowledge from this class and impress your friend.
I took Prof Bates for Modern Humanitites and liked that class much better than this one. Classical humanities is much more literature based whereas Modern Humanities is much more art based. Attendance is mandatory, if you miss a day, you miss a lot. Test material is directly from lecture. He is a good teacher that wants you to do well.
Professor Bates is very knowledgeable about Mondern Humanities. However, I wouldn't have pass his class without the help of a Beacon Tutoring group which I attended two days a week. Lecture were sometimes off on a tangent but overall he is a good teacher. I would probably take one of his classes again.
If you read the book and take good notes from his lectures then you will do fine. He follows his syllabus with strict discilpine so watch out if you think this class will be very easy. Overall, this class was good for memories, cuz the extra credits gave me a save.
nice guy, but make sure you study hard and take great notes. he doesn't follow the syllabus and you don't need the actual humanities book, it's a waste of money. his midterm and final are hard, lot's of essays, he's not the clearist teacher, but he's ok. lot's of extra credit, and I mean a lot, it's what kept my grade up
Professor Bates is incredibly knowledgeable about American Humanities. If there was a downside to the class, it was the incredible volume of material it attempted to cover - pre contact Mesoamerica (Olmec-Aztec), the Incas, Contact, Colonial to Early 20th Century America. Some students also spent lots of time attempting to derail his lectures.
Prof. Bates is a pretty good teacher. He sometimes jumps around so pay close attention to what he says not what he writes on the board. Study your notes and you should do well.
I wouldn't rec. this class to a non-humanities major. Random questions on the tests, the essays can be brutal & sometimes boring class discussions. Lots of required text, too. Good class if you love Eng. lit. (Thoreau, Whitman) and the Meso Americans... Save it for a half hour show on the Discovery Channel.
This class is labor intensive. Only take if you have a lot of time to study. Only a few quizzes and a mid term and a final but lots of other little things including reading quizzes. Do not take.
Mr. Bates is a really interesting teacher. I walked into his class not knowing what Humanities was going to be about and am now walking out finding it has been the most valuable class I have taken. He is passionate about the subject matter and very knowledgeable. He has actually been to the places he discusses so he can talk from experience.
bates is very knowledgeable and a great guy. as someone who has a hard time with humanities, i struggled in his class. even though he lets you make up late assignments, this class takes lots of self-discipline. make sure you keep on top of the reading because he gives lots of pop quizzes that quickly add up and effect your grade.
One of the best professors at ARC! Cool teacher, wonderful personality!
bates is the best teacher ive had at american river. hes really easy and has a great personality. he will definitely make you laugh and everything he teaches you is exactly on the test. make sure to READ READ READ. great teacher, i would definitely take him again
I think Bates is one of the best teachers at ARC!! He's full of knowledge and got a wonderful personality. His quizzes aren't hard at all because he tells you exactly what's gonna show up on the test! I highly recommend him!
Bates is the best of the BEST!!!
Professor Bates is by far the best professor I had at ARC. I'm an ESL student and I managed to receive an A in his class with not much effort. Bates possesses a great personality and is always there if you need help. There are a few quizzes, midterm and a final which aren't hard at all, because he tells you exactly whats gonna show up on the test.
Bates ROCKS!!!
Prof. Bates is the best teacher EVER! I took the summer 310 class; it was fast paced but totally worth it. Just suck it up and do it! I learned so much, he is very helpful, do the reading and the assigned homework, let's you do extra credit. I can't say enough about his class and teachings.
Revelation: HE TALKS IN MONOTONE!! No variation of tone and level. You think no biggie? Students zone out and fall asleep. The way he structures the class is strange. Doesnt follow syllabus much. You need his "disc" more than the book. He is knowledgable, but I dont recommend. He is all over the place and its hard to know what to study in his class
Bates is a pretty good professor- not the BEST one though. What irritates me is that I'm passing his class with an A right now and I made the mistake of buying the insanely expensive textbook that I haven't even used yet. He means well, but it can get very boring- a lot of students fall asleep!
Professor Bates is awesome. He really knows what he's talking about. His class is easy, you don't need to read any homework just pay attention in class and take lots of notes! Dont bother with the books, theyre not needed. He gets a little off topic sometimes but he's great and doesnt require attendence. Just take notes in class and an A is easy :)
OMG he's awesome
He's a cool professor. Speaks clearly. No homework. LOTS of Reading. So READ!!! Study for quizzes and you'll pass. Taking notes is a bit difficult so you will need to review some stuff again on your own and READ.
Professor Bates is a cool professor but the way the class is set up is a little confusing and hard to follow. Take lots of notes and you'll be ok
Incredible teacher. Took for Hum 300 and 330. Never interested before, but he is awesome. Didnt use book for 330 though. Take notes on EVERYTHING and you will do well. Seriously thinking of adding Humanities to my degree. I would only take him for humanities, he is that good.
He was an awsome teacher, i barely paid attention in class but some how i absorbed what he said and did good. you do have to do some work but you dont mind it because its not that bad and very interesting. Take his class
I enjoyed his class. He offers a lot of extra credit which is great. The class can be a little boring but he keeps it interesting. didn't really read anything out of the book and the disk but I still passed. I'd take his class if I needed a humanities class..
I took Hum 330 with no desire to, but I passed the class and ended up very interested and inspired with humanities. Great teacher, very helpful and dedicated.
He never told you what would be on the test and on the tests he put things you never even learned.. gave illiad questions when we studied the oddesy yet we were never required to read the illiad. Very boring class and he always seemed distracted. I HATED the class and just left
Easy class, great teacher. Had no interest in Humanities before, but probably going to major in it now.
HE IS REALLY HARD TO FOLLOW. I TAKE NOTES WELL BUT WITH HIM I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO TAKE NOTES ON. HE GAVE US A LIST OF TERMS TO KNOW FOR THE MID TERM AND THEY WEREN'T EVEN REALLY USED. THE MID TERM WAS MORE CHARACTERS AND THE CLASSIFICATION OF SCULPTURES BY TIME PERIODS. HE SEEMS TO BE LAID BACK SO THAT'S NICE BUT THE BOOK & CD ARE USELESS.
I had no interest in Humanities before, but now it's my favorite class. Bates is very knowledgeable and has a good sense of humor. Just come to class every time, take notes and you will do well in his class.
I had no interest in Humanities before, but now it's my favorite class. Bates is very knowledgeable and has a good sense of humor. Just come to class every time, take notes and you will do well in his class. Also, plenty of extra credit options. You can also ask for more.
Classical Hum. 1 midterm & 1 final(both have in-class essays). occasional summaries and video responses. take notes! it was a good, interesting class and hes a very good explainer, but pay attention to due dates! usually there was confusion of when or what is due. lots of extra credit opps. doesnt use d2l, but he has a CD, and a similar website.
Bates is a good professor, and the content he lectures on is interesting, but his class is not very easy. You need to take notes on everything he says and read almost everything in the sayre related to to his lecture to get an A. Also, he tends to ask some really random questions. Final and midterm is worth 2/3 of grade, rest is mostly quizzes
Honestly I hated this class. His lectures are not very organized, we had to cram a bunch of information at the last minute for the final, and he is pretty rude. Most people in the class had no idea what was due because he doesnt follow his syllabus. If your already interested in this subject sure take him. Otherwise find something else.
Bates is a professor of vast experiences. Most of his slides and the course CD were taken and created by himself. If you have an issue of any kind regarding his course, schedule an appointment with him, he will help. If he writes it on the board it will be on the test. Notes, the course CD & Open mindedness are a must for success taking this class.
I took a Humanities course from Prof. Bates, and while the class itself wasn't too exciting, Bates himself is a great man. He has a sense of humor, and is really passionate about what he teaches. Note taking is a MUST in order to pass the class. It's a lot of information. Most of the slideshows he has are pictures he's taken himself.
Such a great class! We had two tests, some hw, and a few activities. He had fantastic lectures and I learned so much. I honestly didn't read the books and I passed the class because he explains them very well.
Bates iis an excellent professor. He mainly does projector lectures to show you the art so make sure u take notes on the art! and also anything he writes on the whiteboard will be on the exams(2 total). ALso plenty of extra ccredit but will only boost you by 5% but stilll better than nothign!
He is a very nice man and funny. His teaching is very scattered though and his lectures can become a little tedious at times. He also made several mistakes on my grade so make sure you always check yours to make sure he doesn't miss an assignment. Not a bad class overall though. 2 tests, a number of assignments and 5% extra credit allowed
Great teacher, great class!Professor Bates is funny and caring. Just do the work.
Boring class! Every1 in class can barely keep their eyes open. Lectures are disorganized, and he either stays on 1 topic too long or not enough. Hard 2 know what is important to take notes on. Never read the book.Few quizzes, midterm/final are multiple choice and an essay portion. Lectures & tests can be wordy. Prof is nice but not worth taking
Unorganized, not helpful, cant stay focused in class because he is extremely boring. Hardly covered material what was on the tests. Never used expensive book. Everyone in class is barley passing due to lack of teaching. Do not recommend taking.
He's unorganized, and questions on tests aren't what is discussed in class. Only a few quizzes and 2 tests, he doesn't keep up with the syllabus and doesn't use the book so don't waste your money. Buy the Disc though, you'll need it. Do extra credit and study your butt off. Don't take unless you're serious about Humanities.
I don't know where the previous students get the idea Mr. Bates is unorganized, because he is clear on what he teaches and everything on the test was mentioned in class. He is easy going, funny, and helpful. I highly recommend him.
Professor Bates is a great teacher. He loves what he does and it's obvious that he is extremely passionate about Humanities. The second half of the semester consisted of 2 books and art and was crammed into a short period of time. He has tons of assignments and 2 tests consisting of an essay and 50 questions plus quizzes throughout the semester.
horrible class, horrible teacher.. Very unorganized and harsh professor. Hated the class. Doesnt explain very well. Class is hard and hard to follow him. don't recommend taking this class
Professor Bates is a fantastic instructor. Bates knows his material very well and makes what could be a very dry subject interesting and relevant. Take notes (especially anything that is on the board), read the material and you'll do fine.
Very knowledgeable guy. If you have questions he is more than willing to help you out. Make sure you come to class though because he'll talk about random things that aren't in the text and have them on the quizzes. Super fun class!
Bates is well versed in Humanities and expects his students to know just about everything he's learned over the years in a very short period of time. He lets you know what will be covered on tests and quizzes. His final and midterm are very thourough, make sure you study for in-class 4 page essay. Great guy, very approachable.
Prof. Bates is extremely passionate about the subject of Humanities. He caters to all learning styles, but tends to stray from the course curriculum. Therefor some may become a little lost. If you get behind...it is your responsibility to seek assistance from classmates. He will not acknowledge emails requesting 'what have I missed?' replies.
I enjoyed taking Professor Bates class. I learned much about the early North and South Americas. Much of the test material comes from the lectures. He writes very little on the board and does not use power points. Be ready to take notes from a fast paced lecture.
Be prepared to do a lot of reading. He assigns two textbooks as well as a cd-rom and Huckleberry Finn. The assignments are easy. There's only a midterm and a final and a quiz every three weeks or so. His lectures are scattered and unorganized. If you don't follow his exact instructions he'll give you an incomplete and you'll have to do it over
Professor Bates is a pretty laid back teacher who likes to joke. My experience having him as a professor was a good experience. He's clear in what he expects as far as assignments. He reminds students about future assignments and quizzes. When putting in an effort to read, study, & do assignments, this class is an easy pass.
Bates is EXTREMELY passionate and intelligent of humanities. He is approachable and a great guy. Go to office hours and talk to the man, he has many interesting stories! Definitely a college level class, in which he expects you to be on top of the readings and artwork. Tough class, but learned so much. Very fair, you get what you earned. avg grd: C
He is an excellent professor! He is super laid back and funny! He is very knowledgeable and experienced in what he teaches. 95% of the pictures shown in class are ones he has taken himself. He made this class interesting and fun to go to. He has a ton of extra credit. I totally recommend this class for an easy A and an enjoyable experience.
LOTS of ready easy class if you read, very friendly teacher
Professor Bates is super nice, and makes sure you have everything you need for the tests. His lectures and powerpoints cover the most noteworthy aspects of each chapter. He also offers a pretty good chunk of extra credit points that will help your grade.
Extremely condescending. He would yell at us for the most random things. One time he told us we should all just leave his class. When we asked questions, instead of answering them he would make a snarky remark about how he JUST went over that, or how can we NOT know that already? The class is hard and the rude prof. makes it even harder.
He would yell at us for the most random things. One time he told us we should all just leave his class because we were too quiet. When we asked questions, instead of answering them he would often make a remark about how he JUST went over that, or how can we NOT know that already? The class is hard and not being able to approach him made it worse.
Prof. Bates was amazing! They way he teaches makes you care about the subject and gets you really interested in the topics. He barely has any homework, just a few projects and a few quizzes. He's very easy to talk to and easy to approach, very personable. Highly recommend, I took him with 300, 310, and 330 just because I liked the classes so much.
His lectures were interesting for me. He's a good teacher.
His lectures lacked structure, he would just draw scribbles all over the board and go into these tangents that were unrelated to the topic. I could never take notes because he would jump all around with his lectures. Make sure you do a the readings or you'll be lost.
He was a horrible teacher. Half of the class did not even understand what he was trying to teach. I had to drop out with a W and so did many other students. He is very unorganized, unclear, and very sloppy. He doesn't give study guides and expects you to learn the concepts yourself out of nothing. He's a great person but a very bad teacher.
One of the worst classes I've ever taken. He jumps around in his lectures. Offers zero notes. He puts a pictures on the board and gives his personal opinion on it, then asks about the smallest of details on examsquizzes. Most of the class dropped out and was failing heading into the final. Avoid this class
There's no structure and lectures are all over the place. Also not very many assignments so your grade is based on the final. I got a B but definitely dreaded this class.
This professor can be hard because you have to study for his tests and read the books, but if you attend the classes, and study, you will get an A. He evens gives the essay prompts before they are due. I did not have any trouble with his way of teaching, he expects us to know the material, and he was pretty easy on the group projects.
Worst teacher ever. My friend told me to take this class. I regret taking it because he's one of the worst teachers you will ever have. Don't listen to people when they tell you to take a certain specific teacher, even if they are close to you. Everyone is different, and if you do not life and die for humanities then you will NOT pass this class.
THE WORST teacher ever.. If you can't remember a sequence of pictures, who drew those pictures, where they were made, etc. in 20 seconds or less on each of them, you will NOT even get a C in this class let alone pass. You WILL need photographic memory beyond human comprehension to pass this class. If you plan to fail a course then take this class.
Worst teacher ever. I would never recommend taking this teacher. Lectures are sloppy and unorganized. He has the worst teaching style ever. He wants students to look at random photographs on the projector and remember what he said about it. He doesn't even have a clear criteria when he shows his videos in class. I tried with all my life and failed.
This professor is cool to talk with but his teaching style is horrific. I would never recommend stepping inside his classroom.
This was my least favorite class. Probably the worst class I've ever taken in my life. He is an extremely hard grader. He does not go over material that will be on the test and his lectures are not organized in the slightest. I hated this class and would avoid it at all costs.
Interesting lectures, easily understood if you listen and take notes. Lots of group assignments and reading assignments. Never opened the textbooks nor the books assigned to read, just took really good notes during class on them and passed.
He knows his stuff. Good teacher. Learned a lot. There is a good amount of homework assigned. Got an A+.
He is very knowledgeable, and I learned a lot.
Nice guy, came in clutch at the end of the semester, saved my grade! The class wasn't always the same thing every time so it made it a lot less boring. Not too heavy of a work load but studying and preparation for class and tests are crucial to passing. If you put forth a decent amount of effort and participate in class passing shouldn't be hard.
This was by far my least favorite class. His lectures are boring and he gets mad at the class if there isn't a lot of participation. He released my class 45 minutes early TWICE because he got mad that the class wasn't involved enough. It was nice to be released early, but that took away from time that he should've used teaching us the material.
Unclear on what he wants you to know, but he's a nice guy. His tests can be difficult, and he likes essay questions.
