excellent teaching method, conversational lecturing i.e. not boring. Small downside: Tests were multiple choice but involved either noneoftheabove or alloftheabove in every question.

this guy is awesome. you gotta do a little work but he will keep ya awake. he is also one of the nicest guys on the campus. very down to earth.
He is a good professor, he makes you earn your grade and doesn't put up with the whiney people in the classroom. His class is a lot of work, but it's worth it in the end, he very respectful and is willing to stay after class to help you.
Very interesting class. If you take notes and listen when the TA goes over what is going to be on the test (you can ask him questions and nail down what exactly is on it) you will rarely be surprised. Great instructor.
Talks more about current events and less on what is in the book. Missed a lot of classes. Had TA teach to much.
great prof, teachers more on theories less on facts. essay tests. good lectures.
Very unclear.
he puts his test question online day before the test, just have to come up with the answer and when you get a grade back its unfair. you cant see what you miss until you go see a TA.
Multiple choice tests. Curves them based on logical arguments by students. He posts his final online a day before the test. Teaches from his own point of view. He hates Democrats and Republicans equally so he presents a more centered approach to teachng.
I wish I had taken his class when he posted the tests the day before :( Oh, well. Sounds like his class has gotten easier since I took it, so it's probably not too hard at all now. He hates democrats and republicans, yes, but he hates democrats more. He's a decent teacher overall.
He's a great teacher and very interesting. His grading is very fair and he offers opportunites for extra credit. You do have to stay up on current events.
Good teacher. Speaks his mind and from his own point of view, not out of the text. Tests aren't too bad. He gives random quizes over readings and Current events so you have to stay on top of that. He is pretty willing to work with you if you need help and he usually lets class out early, especially on Fridays.
he was a great professor you have to read but he's cute and laid back definitely easy to talk to
easy class if you have an access to the lecture notes since everything on exams was already discussed and given in lectures. exams and gradings are fair. He manages okay in a class where it is tricky to be politically correct.
Never showed up for class....had 3 different people teach for him ang them attempted to teach over stuff no one had covered. Take this class only if you have hours of time to devote and a strong interest in gov't.
very direct and cuts to the point. no fluffery allowed within those doors
The only complaints I heard were from students who: 1) did not attend lecture, 2) were not used to doing the reading for a course, 3) ESL students (this improved some during the semester when he began using a microphone for lecture. If you go to class, pay attention & do your reading you will find Prof. Bearry's lectures very thought-provoking.
Yes, he is hot. Unfortunately, you can tell he knows it. He is very knowledgeable and the material is quite dense. Always go to class because you can count on a quiz 50% of the time. Very laid back and personable.
Readings and lectures can contradict each other, making the exams tricky.
Great classes!
Informative and challenging material. Easy on the eyes!
best teacher ever
Very difficult class. Gave reviews before tests, then tests had completely different questions. Pop quiz every other class period. Test and quiz questions very random and abstract. Grading very subjective.
Biased, but upfront about it. (Libertarian, if you're curious.) Can play devil's advocate very well. Lots of quizzes, so you need to go to class, but he does a lot of discussion so it's fun. He's young, but he knows his stuff. He just sometimes has trouble conveying it. If you have issues with profanity, take someone else.
He's decent. But he has a group of students that eat out of his hands, its annoying, they're like lost puppies that follow him around, pretty pathetic, i don't know if he encourages it or is a victim of it....
Calls himself a libertarian, but the only way you can take that is jokingly. I've had to take 2 courses with him, 2301 and 3301, and I can tell you that over 60% of his lectures are devoted to NeoCon worship, especially when it involves issues of foreign policy. And forget about trying to debate him as he will always use straw man arguments.
This was my 1st semester taking him and for 2 of my classes. THE most INTERESTING and informative lectures I've ever sat through!! Doesn't impose his views. Plays devil's advocate. His weekly quizzes make you attend, READ, and understand the reading which equals A's. You'll learn A LOT from his classes. I'll be taking him again!
Okay, so he's said quite a few things that have made me really mad in class, but he does give his reasons. Don't bother with this class if you just want an easy "A." You'll have to memorize, but you'll also have to think. Go into the class knowing that you'll have to do some work, and that he has a bias (like everyone does) and you'll do fine.
He is by far the best political science professor I have had. His lectures do not bore but captivate. Reading in this class is a must, and if you do you are sure to do well in the class. In addition good note tanking is required, some test questions come from the notes and not the book.
very thought provoking lectures. keeps things interesting but beware his tests are very difficult. all question have a "none of the above" answer choice which drove me up the wall the whole time. keep up with current events.
Guy is just awesome, very hard class but he always uses interesting readings out of his books, all essay tests so you gotta know your stuff but if you can make the arguments on your answers he gives you a good grade because he can tell you know the material, great teacher and is always willing to help
Excellent teacher, with a ton of passion.
Im taking pol. theory and we have to read a lot of books! But he is VERY cool and helpful and understanding, and has a lot of knowledge about this subject!!
Not cool. His comments about my religion made me extremely upset and I'm not one to argue so I stayed focused on the class. I learned that I can't disagree with him and he is chalk-full of bias. Don't take this class if you accept teachers irrationally berating students.
The last commenter said "Don't take this class if you accept teachers irrationally berating students." Following the applicable rules of grammar, I presume that means, "take this class if you reject teachers berating students," which is strange because my peer seemed to be complaining about that exact thing....
Bearry's class is hard. Don't take it if you want an easy A. If you want to pass the class you have to show up and you have to do the reading. There are quizzes on most class days. If you are late you cannot take them. Failing/missing more than 3 hurts your grade. Don't bother arguing with him unless you know what you are talking about.
Had 2 classes Fall '09 with him. Got an A. Got a C. Expect reading. Expect him to follow the syllabus. Expect him to be entertaining/opinionated/highly educated. Expect him to welcome criticism of his opinion. Expect not to take this class if you cry easily. Earned my A. Earned my C. I absolutely recommend him. Peace.
during one of his laborious, and ultimately failed attempts at relating a topic from the book to modern day issues he asked us all one morning to identify which of us were christian and which were not. as a devout atheist and overall pragmatic person i found this to be a terrible lesson and poor taste in lecturing techniques. there's a lot of this.
Likes to talk a lot about current events, but his facts are most often wrong or exagerrated--sometimes he gets called out on this--and so the points he tries to make from his facts are wrong and gravely not-thought-through. And it's his very aggresive, patronizing, obstructionist viewpoints that get everyone hot and bothered. Going to class is a miserable waste, but at least that's all you have to do. His views are so wrong and angry that if he didn't force kids to come (5pts/test) no one would.
He's a great lecturer and extremely interesting. I'm a Chem major who had him for Govt 1, and has since taken 3 of his upper level courses because I love his style. It's easy if you do the work, and I learned so much. His devil's advocate style and occasional use of profanity keeps students engaged.I'd keep taking his courses if I wasn't graduating
I hated this class. Dr. Bearry seems very one-sided in many of his arguments, even though he attempts to convince you he is not. Beware, if you have an opinion of your own, he will not like it, and may barely even listen to it.
He is a nice guy. There are some points in his lecture where it hard to understand him. He does use profanity so if you dont like it don't take his class. on his exams you will have to go back over them because he will occasionally be proven wrong. I think he it to theoretical sometimes.READ THE BOOK! (mostly terms). BTW: HE's very attractive!
Bearry is a really cool guy, he is funny and makes a boring subject interesting. His tests arent bad as long as you take good notes and he is gererous with bonus points for attendance.
Bearry is awesome. Curses like a sailor, but it adds to the effectiveness of his lectures. Tests are easy if you pay attention and memorize the definitions in the text. Adds massive attendance points to each test and to the final grade if you show up for every class. I'm liberal, but his conservative rants we're amusing. Overall great professor!
Really knows how to keep the class engaged with an interesting teaching style. He can be offensive if you're thin-skinned, but most people will probably be alright. Reading and attendance are both necessary, but neither are a waste of time. Keep up and you'll do fine.
His class is hard but I did learn quite a bit in his class. If you want to learn, take his class, if you want an easy a, don't. He gives you extra credit for attending class. Has a LOT of reading and current events. And his tests are pretty hard.
He is awesome!! He breath of fresh air. He gives his honest opinions even if you don't like it. Not to mention he is a Hottie. His tests are based on definitions mostly and current events. Study and don't procrastinate and you will be fine, if needing a couple points go talk to him in his office. He is very helpful and cares. Not an easy A BTW
I thought this class would be boring, given the subject, but it was one of my most interesting classes that semester. Course isn't too difficult as long as you go to each lecture and take careful notes. Tests are pretty fair and straightforward.
His tests are based on half lecture half text. I didn't care for the class mainly because of the size. We started with 490 students and therefore it was hard to hear his lectures at times. Also it is hard to ask questions due to his quick pace and long winded opinions. His class is no cake walk! I had to study the hardest I have ever studied.
Awesome professor, awesome class. He is a great lecturer so going to class wasn't bad and he heavily rewarded those who attend. I averaged and 83 in this class but ended up with an A- because of his attendance curve. Just go to class, pay attention, and you'll be fine. And he's fine as hell.
Go to class and you will pass. Make sure you go to class. Did I mention going to class? Lectures are great
Excellent and knowledgeable professor. Really knows his stuff. Highly recommend him.
You'll really hav to listen and tak notes. He'll giv us assign read'n but his lecture isn't base on what you read. His lecture style is bad, he gets off subject. And since his exam is base on his lecture and read'n,you'll prolly fail. You must be thr for attend. Our TA told us if we attend lecture evry single day, you'll do fine but thats not the case:[
He is an expert on his subject but has a weird way of lecturing it. He literally stands at the front of the class and talks while you furiously write down notes, so you have to listen carefully. He's also a little intimidating to talk to face-to-face. Tests are 50% readings, 50% lecture material. You have to study hardcore to get an A.
Hardest class ever
At first, I thought it was just me. I personally am not a fan of the political sciences, especially government... But... it wasn't just me. THIS CLASS IS HARDDD. Perhaps too hard for a govt class... My only C, way to start off the year...
I personally think the professor's lectures are really interesting; he curses alot, but mostly for emphasis. Contrary to what alot of people may say, he really does take what his students say to heart, and whenever I asked him any questions, he was actually very patient with me. Just pay attention in class and read the books and you'll do fine.
Very easy class. Just take good notes. Don't bother reading the book until a day before the exam and you should be able to get an A. Also be sure to be there everyday because he adds on an extra 5 to 10 points to the final grade if you missed 2 or less classes.
Great teacher but won't go out of his way or go into too much detail. His lectures are divided into giving out info and arguing with him whether his opinion is the same as yours or not. in order to get an A attendance and reading are a must!
Easy teacher. The only grades are four tests, and all the question on these tests come from either the reading or the lecture. He also adds a 10 point curve for attendance so if you come to class and get a B or B+ on the tests, it's very easy to get an A+ in this class.
Pretty easy class. Read the readings and pay attention in class amd you'll do fine. He curves the tests quite a bit. Sometimes he gives pop quizzes over the short readings and those count as bonus. Overall a good teacher
Very easy class if you attend lecture and do readings. 8-10 point curve on each test (attendance based) and 10 point curve at end of semester (attendance based). Lectures are interesting, and reading is required. Very little pop quizzes, but they don't count against you... only bonus.
He is a good teacher
Dr.Bearry's a little intimidating but as long as you pay attention in class, you'll be fine. Test questions are from the reading and lecture. Occasionally, he does give pop quizzes over the short readings. These pop quizzes just count as extra credit on the tests though. Attendance counts as bonus at the end of the year.
Fantastic teacher. You will actually learn something in his class. If you have less than 2-4 absences for the entire semester you end up getting a 20% curve. Take this class. He's a great teacher and the class is not going to stress you out
Terrible teacher. I never learned everything in class. I'm not good at Government and I had an extremely hard time in the class and I still feel like I learned nothing.
His lectures were very hard to understand. He talks extremely fast, and he doesn't have any outlines, notes, or powerpoints for us to follow. His exams are also very hard, and his curves are usually 5-10 points. Attendance is mandatory- at the end of the year he curves your grade up a letter grade if you miss less than 3 classes.
He talks very fast and doesn't allow laptops, so it's pretty hard to catch everything he says. His tests are HARD and are heavliy based on the readings (from the textbook he wrote). That being said, he is a funny guy and genuinely wants everyone in his class to learn the material, as well as talk about it in class. I will be taking 2302 with him
I've taken him three times now. He is by far one of the best professors on campus. He's passionate and opinionated. I enjoy going to class every time. He has a good balance of talking about history and definitions and also talking about current issues. He adds points for good attendance so make sure you go ;)
Definitely one of the harder government classes I've had to take but definitely NOT the most boring. His lectures are extremely interesting as he integrates current events and history together. He is very open-minded and allows for a lot of student-teacher interaction, even in a large lecture class. Make sure you do the reading and attend class!
Excellent professor, his lectures are extremely interesting. His class is just plain old lecture style no power points or visual aids just listen closely because what he says twice always shows on the exam. His class is not super easy but if you attend class with few misses you get curved a letter grade. And yes you have to read at least a little.
Prof. Bearry is awesome, I really didn't want to leave his class, he really makes you work but you appreciate your education much more, read the readings he assigns and take hand written notes, he let's you use your notes on the quizzes which are often, you can't use laptops or tablets which is good, his tests are essay format, take his classes
Took Dr. Bearry twice- Govt 2302 was much easier than 2301 I think. No projects, all lectures and tests. He really wants students to attend/pay attention. Textbook was written by him which makes it somewhat tedious (because it sounds just like him) but helps make the course easy to follow.
Great professor. I had him twice in GOVT 2302 and in PSCI 3301. He doesn't use any visual aids, he mainly just lectures. He relates topics to current events and tries to actually make students understand the material. You cannot avoid reading in PSCI though, but their not too difficult reads. GOVT tests were online for the FALL semester of 2013.
Write down everything he says. He jumps around topics alot, and doesn't make clear what he wants us to know for tests. His tests are hard, they are about 40 questions each, about 10 of the 40 are the REALLY vague and tricky questions.good luck!I made an A with a some decent studying+ extra credit. He's a really nice guy, gives back points on exams!
Dr. Bearry is a great professor. He is very interested in this subject and will state his opinion even though it may offend you. Make sure you go to class and write down everything he says. Reviews are just like the exam. Learned a lot from him.
Mediocre class. 4 "posts" or mini-essays, each worth 5% of your grade (they're easy), and 4 exams each worth 20% of your grade. The exams were about 40-50 multiple choice questions and you had 60 minutes to take it. Lots of reading for the course, and one of the required books is identical to the last half of "We the People" from Govt 2302.
I took his online class, which had 4 essays and 4 40 question exams. Was able to just review his lectures before taking the test and got an A. If you need it he gives out extra credit too.
4 exams usually 50-40 mins long; given 60 mins to finish. His exams are online with material from both his lecture and the book so make sure you read! If you miss 3 or fewer classes, he'll curve your final grade a whole letter.
Dr. Bearry is a great teacher. You must go to class to get materials not in the book. Test is over lectures and book readings so if you miss a lecture you can be screwed. Doesn't use powerpoints ,but his lectures are entertaining and fun to listen to. He will state his opinion and is very passionate about what he teaches. P.S. No phones or laptops
Amazing when it comes to political theory and is a master of it. He will tie current events to the readings for relevancy. If you are a think skinned liberal Democrat or Neo-Con, expect to have your party criticized & don't crywhine. I am a conservative GOP guy but he is always correct in his brutal critique of those in power, which I enjoy&agree.
If I rated Bearry back in '08 when I got a D in this course, it would be have been 3 helpful, 1 clarity, 1 easy and stay away. That being said the university has taken a lot of the course out of his hands because it used to be brutal. It is very easy now regardless of who you take, go to the lectures, he takes attendance and he'll make you think.
Self-absorded professor that teaches from a textbook that he wrote! Exams are hard and not curved.
Pretty difficult class to be quite honest. The tests are definitely no walk in the park and he gives a lot of questions from the textbook that he wrote, which is very boring and almost as if hearing him talk in writing. Then the other part of the questions are from his online lectures, where you actually do have to listen to him talk.
His is a very good professor. If you need help you can always go to his office hours. Helped out a lot. Can jump from one subject to another but writes notes and he does have pop quizzes so read every reading. Overall he is a great professor.
Bearry is a master of political theory and it shows. That being said, he tends to go off on tangents and sometimes loses the main point he was trying to come across. He is usually good about clarifying if you ask him after class though. His lectures are super interesting but they are hard to follow.
Dr. Bearry is the best professor i've had, his style of teaching will make you learn, but only if you go to class with an open mind and take good notes. He's a master of political theory and that's basically one of the most essential elements to know about government. UTD drops the ball because they don't teach the great philosophers anymore.
Dr. Bearry is a phenomenal lecturer and will make you interested in politics and theory even if you aren't interested now! He is a laid back guy and relates well to the students while still making sure you learn the material. There are 4 tests, each 25% of your grade. He gives points for being in class which he adds to your exams.
One of the best lecturers I've ever had. He said this was his first semester using powerpoints, but it REALLY helped. He's pretty funny and he explains everything very well, and gives you extra points for attendance. Tests were tough, but he curves them. You need to really read the textbook.
Dr. Bearry has some distinct strengths and weaknesses depending who you ask. He does give brilliant and captivating lectures, and he does drop an F bomb or two which is great. However, you have to be in class... period. The structure of his courses makes for a miserable experience for those of us who tend to play hooky from time to time.
Coming into this class on the first day I was super worried I wouldn't do well. However as the semester progressed I found myself seeing that it wasn't that bad after all. If you go to all the lectures and read a little you won't have any issues making a high grade in his class. Great Professor!
Decent lecturer. In govt you expect a prof's views to leak into their lessons; in Bearry's class it's less leak & more soak. One resultant problem was constant off-topic tangents (e.g. about how "cool" guns are). Another was that vocab terms were defined within the framework of libertarian ideology and thus often didn't match textbook definitions.
Eh, mixed feelings about this class. One one hand, Bearry's lectures are interesting and show his knowledge. But on the other hand, his vague test questions sometimes over stuff not covered in lecture, heavy reading for hw, and sometimes downright false reccomendations of what to study for tests disappointed me. Take this class at Community College
Very dynamic and passionate lecturer. It's incredibly rare that you get a Tea Partyer as a government and politics professor, and it was exciting and new. If you attend all the lectures you get extra credit for attendance, which is otherwise non-mandatory. 4 exams, pretty straight forward. Taking again for the next course in state and local politic
He is my favorite professor. I am actually surprised to see his ratings are pretty low. His lectures can get boring if you HATE government. His honesty makes the lectures very entertaining. When he gives off specific examples based on real-life events, just take them as "food for thought"; don't get carried away. Read on track, and you're good.
He's a good professor.
There are 4 exams total. Exams cover both lecture and textbook stuff. No hw is ever assigned but he does offer a good amount of extra credit assignments. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does give a BIG extra credit if you are there.
Pay attention during lectures. Take good notes.
Dr. Bearry seems to be passionate about his work, but rarely shows up to class (and almost never informs his students until the last minute - which was unfortunate for me because I took his 8am). He makes his own exams, and they are fairly straightforward and based off of his notes/textbook. Did not learn much from lecture though.
I had three classes with Dr. Bearry while he was at UTD. He is incredibly intelligent, well spoken, and clear about what will be on the test. Now, his tests aren't easy, but he usually gives an insane amount of extra credit for having near perfect attendance. If you show up, you will pass, and he give griping, hilarious, and informative lectures.
Hilarious lecturer! Exams are almost entirely lecture based, although he gives reviews which are usually the test questions the class before the exam. He also gives a huge amount of extra credit for those with great attendance, making it almost impossible to do poorly unless you never show up.
Dr. Bearry was pretty chill and laid-back. I would have liked for him to enunciate his words a bit better during lecture, but it's nothing that anyone wouldn't be able to understand if they paid attention. When I had him for government, the only grades were 4 exams. Attendance can boost your grade, so ATTEND CLASS! Tests are on lecture and book!
