Great professor. Very clear.
His notes are so clear and the homework is very easy. If you go to the lectures, take good notes and do the homework the tests are wicked easy. I've never gotten A's in math classes until his classes. Wish all prof's were like him.

HE made it easy to learn, I was a good class.
fantastic prof. i've heard that stats classes are pretty tough unless youve got a really good teacher--well I guess he must be one, cause I got an A with ease! discussion section was helpful, had an enthusiastic, helpful, attractive TA too :-)
Great Teacher! I wish I could have him for all of my math classes.
A great math teacher. I'm not good with math and he is very clear and goes a good pace that we can all keep up with. He's always willing to answer questions and help. Definitely take a class with him if you have to take math.
He is the BEST professor I have ever had. He was so helpful and made a very hard class easy. I realy feel like I learned a lot.
best teacher ever! really nice guy.
One of the best teachers I've had. His notes and explanations are clear and straight forward. He gives plenty examples of how to work problems and teaches at a perfect pace. Don't be intimidated by math, he makes it easy! He does expect attendence.
I hate math, but he made it seem half way interesting, best math professor here!
great teacher, very clear and helpful. i would have had an A but my TA barely spoke english.
Great class, taught well.
I LOVE U BRIAN BURRELLLLLLLL
Fantastic teacher...my TA SUCKED THOUGH!! Bri is a great guy! If you have to take math and you hate it, take it with him because he explains things well.
If you have to take a math take it with him. He is a very good guy.
Awesome teacher, the best math teacher I've ever had, he explains everything clearly...definitly NOT the typical flakey math teacher, awesome guy
had a great time. nice class. awesome prof.
Makes everything very clear. Conducts class well.
Very good professor! Helpful, nice and his tests were on exactly what he taught. Good guy! Take his class!
i love him. i made sure to take one of his classes every semester. probably the best teacher at umass-and hot too.i love him
he definitely wants his students to do well. if you're not a math kid, take it.
Great teacher, very clear
Class was ridiculously easy. I love math, but I have lots of friends who took this class that hate math and they all got A's too. Really nice guy, wants everyone to do well. Take the class.
Good professor, very organinized. Discussions are helpful.
Took it my freshman year...he's an excellent math teacher and always willing to help students. Even though I'm horrible at math I felt like I understood at least some stuff.
awesome teacher, helpful, call him at his office and set up a time, go to discussion. learned the most in his class.
I did not enjoy the stats class at all, and the tests were downright impossible i thought
Prof. Burrell is a very good math teacher. The way he explains it makes it so easy to understand. Not a hard class; just do the homework, go to class, go to discussions and you'll do well.
Professor Burrell is a really nice and helpful teacher. He teaches the material very well, so it is easily understood. This class is an easy A if you pay attention, show up, do your homework, and do well on the exams.
Great Teacher-works really well with students that have disabilities in Math. I would have never graduated if not for his understanding.
Excellent - Helpful and really cares about teaching. This is what being a professor is all about.
brian is an amazing teacher. i hate math but he made everything so easy and i got an A which ive never gotten in math in my life. definately take this class youll love it.
He teaches the material very specifically and gives alot of examples to help us. I've never taken stats before and I really enjoyed it. He sometimes takes attendance with the class exercises. But overall GREAT professor!
He is an awesome teacher and explains all the material very clearly with lots of examples. Go to class and do the homework and you'll be fine. Easy A.
def a class you can easily get an A in. hw's bring up your average and the tests are not hard at all. Just look at the practice exam that he gives you and you'll be fine.
Excellent professor. I have never taken statistics before and he made it all very easy and straightforward. Lots of examples, and always went over concepts from the lecture before each class. Cleared up confusion and answered all questions. Exams were easy, he gives you a practice one. If you have to take statistics, definitely take it with him.
this class was so easy. theres 2 tests, one of which is the final. the discussions basically explain anything/everything that went on in class and the TA goes over whats going to be on the quiz before you take the quiz. easy A
I couldn't stay awake in his class. I learned more in the discussion with my TA than I did in lecture because I couldn't follow him.
EXTREMELY easy class, especially if taken an advanced math previous Boreing lecture and hard to stay awake, but if you do not grasp math easily, he lays it out clearly. I barely went to lecture, but got an A in the class. Any misty areas, the TA was able to clear up easily. not much hw or studyin. alot of final exam q's taken from quizzes
He's a nice guy and knows his stuff but the class is really boring. Pretty much everyday I had to keep from falling asleep. Quizzes are given every week in discussion which really help solidify what he taught.
Easy class. you only have two tests the entire year. class is really easy to skip. all you have to really do is go on wed. to get the homework assignments and complete them and turn them in during disc. he's a pretty funny guy, just dont talk during class or else he'll embarass you and kick you out
FINALLY a math prof who has bridged the language gap between the mathematically inclined and the mathematically uninclined. I went to class and things made sense, it was great. He can seem a bit dry, but excellent prof, would take him again.
Great teacher. Very exact. Show up to class, take notes, study material and suggested homeworks, you will be fine. He gives plenty of examples so no one is left in the dark. Do Daily exercises and worksheets, and you will be fine, but he is a great teacher.
Brain Burrell is an amazing teacher. He lays the material out very clearly and gives you lots of examples. I never did well in a math class until I took this course. Easy A.
Brian is great. He is very patient and very clear and really loves what he is doing. He creates a positive enviroment devoted to your success. He's witty and entertaining. Best math teacher I have ever had. I love when he yell at people for talking. He's a genuinely nice guy.
Burrell is an awesome teacher. I hated math before the class started and had no interest in pursuing it. Now I actually understand and...like it. Yeah, I know. Make sure you get this teacher.
Very clear, is great at teaching math, uses the overhead all the time. Attendance not mandatory but class is helpful, hw every week.
basically this is burrell, notes everyday, all notes given on an overhead projector so you can't get them online, homework every week due in discussion every tuesday, short, one-page quiz every discussion(so make sure you go), 3 exams, and more importantly, he's not that boring in lecture
Tough exams, but a good professor. Really depends on who your T.A. is considering they're the ones grading your homework and exams, as well as grading your attendance in discussion section. BB is a hottie though! Definitely a perk.
Burrell was a great teacher, and very nice guy. Very clear.Going to class helps. He sometimes does class exercises in lecture to give you some more credit. Exams are very fair, and pretty easy.Get the textbook, it helps. I recommend this class. I got an A- with studying for only about 2 hours for each exam.
Easiest class I've ever taken! If you need an R1, take his class! He was a good teacher, except when people talked in lecture he would threaten to "eject" them.
cool guy
Notes are generally very in depth and clear. Gives plenty of example problems in class, which was very helpful on homework. Some homework assignments a little difficult to understand. Allowed for self-made "formula sheet" on exams.
Brian wasn't the best math teacher i've had. Doesn't make Calc very easy to understand. and he really needs to use a computer not the overhead. Overall though, a nice guy.
If you go to class, do the online homework, this class is easy. If you don't go to class, you're not going to do that well. Burrell is a pretty good teacher, and he's a nice guy, but this class is so boring.
Really nice guy, really wants his students to do well. That said, lecture is torture. So boring. Quiz and homework due every discussion. Do the homework and you will be ready for the quizzes and 4 tests (which are 80% percent of your grade, no joke. Ew.)
Excellent man. Hot too for his age ! Lectures are boring but hey its stats what do u expect? Ur grade all depends on ur TA. and tests/quizzes are not 80% of ur grade contrary to the comment below. All in all, easy A
Burrell is a great guy and teacher. His notes are clear and concise. He tells you what is going to be on the tests, but you must go to class to learn the material. Little use of book..just go to his lecture and do the OWLs.
Great Math teacher.. if you have not taken calc yet, you must go to class and take good notes in order to understand the material..Burrell always had a full class because kids with other teachers preferred him...he does a good job preparing you for tests and is not out to trick you.. Take calc with Burrell!
Great Calc class. He is very clear. Just go to most classes and pay attention to the lecture. Lots of good examples and clarity. Great professor : )
take the class. do it.
he was my professor for intro statistics and he made everything sooooooo easy to understand. his tests are exactly what you do in class. i'm taking another class with him this semester!
Very good teacher. He prepared us well for the exams and told us exactly what we needed to do in order to succeed in the course. Highly reccomended.
Seems like a real good guy. Helpful when it comes to making quizzes up, and very approachable. Knows his stuff, but teaches in an odd manner at times. Also buckled down by the atrocious Wiley Plus homework system. If you took AP Calc in high school most times its not even worth going to class.
Seems like a real good guy. Helpful when it comes to making quizzes up, and very approachable. Knows his stuff, but teaches in an odd manner at times. Also buckled down by the atrocious Wiley Plus homework system. If you took AP Calc in high school most times its not even worth going to class.
really great math teacher. he is always very clear about what he is teaching and the class is overall pretty simple.
Professor Burrell is great, he explains everything extremely well, and he wants us to succeed. He always tells us exactly what to expect for tests, no surprises, practice tests online, weekly homework and quizzles.
Really boring professor. I always wanted to sleep in his class. All he does is writes and talks. His homeworks and pretty easy but the way he words the quiz and test are different from the notes, but it was easy anyway. Lecture attendance wasn't mandatory but he gave quizs every week in discussion and homework was due every week in the discussion.
Tests are tricky. You really have to pay attention to minor details that he didn't go over in class. Class is boring, no on shows up ever. I thought quizzes were the most difficult. Homework system was easy. Overall, I thought he was pretty difficult.
If you have taken Calculus before this class will be very easy. If you have not.. it might be hard because he is not very good at explaining things. Dont buy the book prior to attending the class because we ended up having to buy an online version anyway. Cheat sheets are allowed on exams. Homework is easy.. Unlimited guesses.
One of the best professors I have had so far at Umass. Really wants all of his students to do well and tries to makr math fun and easy.
Should be an easy class if you've had any calculus before. He wants his students to do well, his lectures are clear and he gives good examples that may be on the exam. Wiley was annoying but it's free points, 6 spark quizzes he drops lowest. 2 midterms + 1 final. Practice exams online are what you can expect to see. Scale of 85%+ on exams as an A.
he explains materials clearly, one of the best professors that i have encountered.
He is by far the best professor I have had here so far. He is clearly in love with what he teaches and uses real life examples to teach, making class interesting. He keeps class interesting and takes notes the same way as the students making it a lot easier to understand.
he was pretty clear. just make sure you know some basic calculus before taking this course. theres big scale at the end of the semester. online homework sucks though and costs money, and you dont need to buy the book cause its online with the homework.
He was an easy professor if you have taken calculus before. No prs or anything, 3 exams, easy homework. good guy no complaints
I'm not a big math fan but he made it interesting. The tests are pretty fair overall. He does a good job teaching the material. I'd recommend taking him if math is not your strong suit
I think he is one of the best professors at UMass. He is passionate about math, and he made the course material very clear. If you go to lecture, the weekly quizzes in discussion and the tests are easy. My TA for the class wasn't helpful at all, but i guess it depends on which one you get. Highly recommend him!
Really effective teacher. Made everything extremely clear. Always answered questions. Class was not hard to go to.
Very clear, interesting professor. Extremely reasonable in terms of homework, will not give assignments other 132 professors give if he feels they are unnecessary work.
Burrell was a very honest and helpful professor. If you go to class and SIT IN THE FRONT you will do well. Go to office hours- it was extremely helpful. Final exam is very close to study guide. Short, easy quiz every week. Study hard and you will do fine!
Awesome teacher. Definitely shows interest in the students learning and success. He teaches very clearly and is very helpful for office hours. He is the best math professor I had at Umass for 131 and 132. If you want to do well in these tough courses, take him.
He is boring but good.
A very good/easy class, especially if you have already taken calc before. Burrell is very good at telling you what you need to know for tests. I appreciate his patience. He knows how students feel about math and he tries to make it as easy as he can while still helping you learn. Math is hard to teach, so props to him.
Great professor. Very patient and clear during lectures. Gives great review tests before an exam.
Good guy. Understandable lectures. Great test review. Easy tests. Take his class
The class is okay. He's a good professor, and his exams are all multiple choice, which can be a downfall sometimes. The hw is pointless but easy to get an A on. The quizzes suck cause theyre online and open response. Not a bad class to take. Takes care of both R1 and R2 math requirements.
If you've taken calc before you'll be fine, his course is easy. If you haven't I would recommend a different teacher.
Burell is always very clear and tells you exactly what to study for exams. All his exams are 20 multiple choice questions, except the final which had 30, but if you understand what he did in class they are not difficult. He makes calculus a LOT easier than it was in AP Calculus.
Prof. Burrell is a great professor. This class is very easy if you've taken calculus before, and an 85 is an A which makes it even easier. Burrell makes everything pretty clear and shows how calculus can actually be used in real life. There are 2 exams, a final, several online quizzes, and regular online homework.
This class was so easy. I took Honors Calculus in High school so I breezed through this. Burrell is a really nice guy and he will help you if you ask for it. If you don't go to the lectures you WILL FAIL. Buying the book is useless, just buy the online code. Good Luck
Burrell definitely knew his stuff however he wasn't able to communicate the material very clearly. Very organized lectures however and easy to take notes. I wish he did more step by step example problems though because I learn math better that way. Overall a pretty decent professor.
He gives lots of good examples in lecture; they were so good and understandable that I never had to use the book for reference, I always studied straight from the notes. The tests aren't that hard as long as you study enough for them. I highly reccomend taking this class to knock off your R1/R2 requirements.
GREAT TEACHER! I have taken 3 different stats now (high school and at my other college) and he is by far the best teacher. I am not a math person but he explains things SO well and the TAs are beyond helpful. His tests are just like the practice ones,no surprises. The homework is not hard, and if you need help examples are easy to find in the text.
Professor Burrell is awesome, helpful, and explains everything very clear. Also the TA's and the discussions are super helpful. If you study for the tests and go to the review sessions you will do fine (there were never any surprises on tests). Take Stats 111 it is very interesting and easy :)
Calculus 127 wasnt a bad class. If you had never taken calc beforehand it was no big deal, he still explained problems and concepts pretty well. He did not do a lot of step by step equations. The tests arent bad.
Professor is clear and explains the problems well, but does not go step by step. The exams are fairly easy; only 20 questions and plenty of time. I had never taken calculus, or pre-calculus prior to this course but I was able to understand. Fairly easy gen ed requirement.
HES A BOSS
Very clear and concise. Class isn't too hard, basically just pay attention in class. Homework is all online and can be pretty annoying. DO NOT TALK IN CLASS, HE WILL YELL AT YOU. other than that he's pretty awesome and I would recommend taking 127 with him.
85 is an A and with Wiley an A is really just an 80. Wiley is the terrible online homework but that's the same throughout all Math127. So as far as the actual professor goes, he's terrific. I have friends in other classes that come to mine because he's the best. The class is in Marcus, but he's the best Prof for this class
Burrell is probably the greatest math teacher I've ever had.. Including HS teachers. Although the class is gigantic he makes it really easy to understand the material. I had no previous calc knowledge and managed to get an A- in this class. Go to class, if you can't borrow someones notes. Do the online hw and you'll be fine
He does a really good job at trying to explain things, but sometimes his voice makes it hard to pay attention. Definitely sit closer to the front, and take good notes. Test are easy (multiple choice) and homework is all online.
Burrell is wicked laid back, easygoing, funny teacher who knows his stuff. Always go to class and take good notes or at least copy them down from a friend since he has a fairly fast pace and only skims topics. The much harder questions that you'll be tested on are on wiley- NOT in class. S.I sessions are so helpful at a much slower pace
Burrell is a wicked nice guy, even if he's a little boring sometimes. One problem with the class is that the department head runs it so he doesn't make his own tests and hates the book we use. But he's very easy to learn from and if you don't get something, the SIs are really helpful.
Dr. Burrell is a great teacher, but know your Algebra and Pre-Calc before taking his class. While he is great, the fact the Math department uses WileyPlus stinks. Homework for any given section is only 6-10 problems, FAR too little for you to get a real understanding of the material. Be sure to attend the SI classes or the math lab for help.
Great teacher. He explains everything in great detail and is able to clarify any problems.
Nice guy, really tries hard to make class interesting. Lectures can make you feel like you aren't accomplishing anything; discussion is where you do most of your learning.
Great guy and a passionate teacher however the examples we do in lecture are far too easy and once you get to hw/exams you're screwed. This class is not easy even if you aced 131. I think I would still recommend him though.
Extremely easy class. 85 or above is an A. All multiple choice tests with a study sheet you can use. Does everything he can to prepare you for the exams.
I never went to class, and only went to discussion, and I received an A- in the class. The lectures move very slowly, and all of the material taught during the week is condensed and explained better in discussion. There is a short quiz every week and homework due in discussion, all of which are easy. Definitely get the book!
easy, clear, and notes online!
8am class was rough with him. Hard to keep my eyes open, but not a terrible class. He took away the cheat sheet so don't look forward to that. Not bad, but definitely not my favorite!
I took Honors Calculus in high school and was told this class would be manageable. So not the case. His notes and explanations are confusing and the tests don't look a lot like the review sheets. HW is easy and all online. I would try to take this class with another teacher or not take it at all. Way harder than expected!
Burrell lectures with decent clarity and prepares you fairly well for exams. Most questions on exams won't be a surprise. Burrell sometimes gets off topic but is usually helpful and class is worth attending (but not mandatory). If you took AP calc this class will be a breeze. Overall try to get Calden but if you cant Burrell is a close second.
Prof. Burrell is a nice guy and his class is pretty easy. It is AP Calc all over again. You don't even need to go to lecture in order to do well. I would definitely take this class.
This class is really hard. Everyone who says its easy took AP calculus in high school. You will fail otherwise or barely pass with an extreme amount of studying. Pre-Calculus won't prepare you for this class. Take it with Adena cause she is the course chair. 90 grade scale, no cheat sheet, harder curriculum. 2nd exam class average was about a 50.
DO NOT TAKE BURRELL FOR MATH 127! Cheat sheets are out of the window, so the class is really tough now. He doesn't even know what is on the exams. Adena Calden makes the exams, so if you can, take her class. If you can't, then just go to her lectures anyway.
Professor Burrell knew a lot about Calculus, but taught his class like students knew something about calculus already. If you have not have previous calc classes it might be a little difficult. Explained material well with many examples. Exams were difficult but do-able if you study review packets and work/notes. Would recommend this class.
If you have never taken calculus before you will STRUGGLE with this course. The first exam was reasonable and even though I never took calculus I managed to ace it (by going to review sessions) but, the second exam was unreasonable. The class average for Burrell was probably a 50..difficult class to ace!
Class is really easy and the homework takes about 10 minutes per week. Very easy
Brian is an excellent lecturer. He speaks slowly and clearly and has very good handwriting. The material can be difficult at times, but he does a good job breaking it down. The discussion sections are a waste, but he makes them mandatory by having weekly quizzes. Otherwise, if you go to lecture and pay attention, you should be all set.
I was very impressed with Prof. Burrell at the beginning of the semester, but as we finished integrals and got to series his lectures became overly esoteric and not very helpful. I found myself skipping class to watch a 15 minute youtube video and learning the material far more effectively. If you're a math major you'll enjoy his in depth proofs.
Awful professor take in with Benincasa instead. He doesn't explain well if you have never taken calculus before. Started going to a different class because he was so awful.
Burrell is such a nice guy and genuinely cares about statistics. He designs the class so that it is easy to do well as long as you attend lectures and go to discussion. One homework and quiz a week which take place in discussion so you have to go, but it helps a lot to understand the material. No surprises-he always puts up a practice test too!
This class is really hard if you have never taken Calculus. He doesn't teach he just reviews the material because he expects that you already know the basics. I suggest you only take this teacher if you are good at calculus other than that take the other teachers for this course or else you will fail.
Impossible if you've never taken calc before. Professor speaks gibberish and writes gibberish on the board. WileyPlus is a joke. No extra credit. If you fail the test you may as well kill yourself, fail test=fail class.
Agree with what others have said, as the semester goes on he seems to spend less time breaking things down. Also agree with discussion being a waste, if not for the quizzes. YouTube and tutors are more effective then he is in general. Make study groups if you aren't good with math, he wasn't very helpful with office hours.
I took Calculus in high school and was confused in his class. Terrible professor, very unorganized, jumps around different sections every class. Stopped going to his class after the first test and went to Calden's instead.
Professor Burrell was an awesome professor, you could tell he really knew what he was talking about. go to lecture and discussion and you should be fine!
Very good professor. I had no prior knowledge of calculus but he explained everything very clearly. Do the work and the class is easy. Towards the end of the semester I skipped many lectures and still got an A. I don't recommend this but if you stay focussed for the 1st half of the semester it's definitely possible to teach yourself the rest.
Great teacher, easy to understand, very helpful, and in general a nice guy
Pretty easy class! Attendance in lecture isn't mandatory, but go to discussion! There's a quiz every class. Never went to lecture and got decent grades! just study and you'll be fine
I took Calc 3 with him and it was the best math class I've taken so far. Very clear and organized and he goes over the material often and prepares you very well for the exams. Teaching aside, he is such a nice person and very understanding, don't be afraid to go see him during office hours. I very much recommend him!
I wasn't too crazy about him during class, but he's a good dude and prepared us well for exams, giving us a decent idea of the types of questions that would be asked. I did have to get help from other TAs and other professors in the tutoring center, but I think that's par for the course with Calc 2.
Really great professor. I took AP Calc so I already had some knowledge. Glazed over some pre-calc topics, but explained others well. Exams can be kinda hard, but pay attention in lecture, do assignments, and practice problemsexams and they're doable. Overall, would recommend, especially to those with previous calculus knowledge
Not bad. I did not take Calc in high school and he does teach with the assumption that you took some calculus so this was a bit of a struggle. However, he is a great guy. He knows what he is talking about and he will help you if you need it. The class was pretty tough though if you have not taken any Calc.
I never took calculus in high school so I went in with no knowledge. He kinda expects you to have already taken calc so I started off behind and found it very difficult to catch up. His teaching style is confusing and he's not very clear on what concepts are important.
Brian is a great guy. Very intelligent and interesting. He's a published author and an amazing teacher. I would love to take another class with him. While calc 127 is a very easy class for those who have taken calc, he was a very inspirational teacher. Tests are easy if you do the practice and homework isn't hard. Take him if you can. Recommended.
Great guy, painfully boring class, especially if you have 3 or 4 other classes. Discussions are mostly a waste of time but you're required to attend. TA's from Asia and hard to understand. Quiz and homework every week. Everyone just wants to get out of the discussion. The only interesting part of the class is the last section on hypothesis testing.
Brian's lectures are confusing if you have not taken calc already. He assumes you know steps and will skip over them. He is not big on explaining what he is doing (he will just do examples). If you don't need it broken down for you he will be a good teacher otherwise it is hard to follow. Exams are fairly difficult and require much studyingreview
Professor Burrell is one of the best math teachers I've had in my academic career so far. He's a super clear lecturer and is always willing to stop and answer your questions - which he always does with grace. If you've taken calculus before, this class is a breeze, if not, it will take some work, but Brian does a great job of covering the material.
A lot of people in my lecture struggled in this 100 level class, but that definitely has something more to do with the TA's than it does with Prof. Burrell. I found him to be a really effective teacher and he's incredibly intelligent. You must go to lectures to succeed and pay attention the whole way through. If you do this, you will be golden!
Prof. Burrell is one of the best professors I've had. He does some math in his head a lot so, unless you ask, it might be a little confusing. But he's super patient and does a lot of example problems to make sure you understand the concept. He tells us what specific sections will be on the exam too.
Great guy, really clear and easy to understand. Happy to clarify and help. A little bit boring, but not terrible for an entry-level stats class. I found the TAs to be helpful and kind.
Burrell is the best math professor I've ever had. His lectures are clear and he stops often to make sure the students are following. He is straight forward about the material that appears on the exams. Highly recommend!
Brian taught Calc I very well by staying on topic and taking you through numerous problems step by step. During his presentations, he displays a persona you would not expect to come from a person that loves numbers. He comes off as very social and welcoming to human interaction. I highly recommend this professor to anyone!
He seems like a nice guy, but his lectures are so boring. At the beginning of the semester he told us he would NEVER let us out early, and he was not kidding. Guy could have nothing more to say with 3 minutes left and he'd still make you sit there. You only really need to go to the discussion because that is where you take the quiz and hand in hw.
Brian is a good teacher. He is very clear when teaching a topic. His lectures can be boring but they are really important to go to. The discussion is where you pass in homework and take quizzes. This can be very helpful and boost your grade a ton if you have a good TA.
Clearly passionate about both mathematics and about teaching students. It was great listening to him speak. His notes were crystal clear and made it easy to review for homework and for exams. Adequately prepares you for everything. Really nothing to complain about. Hands down the best instructor I've had at Umass.
Fairly short homework due in discussion every week before a quiz. Long and boring lectures. Discussion grade is more participation than quiz grades. Some TA's grade quizzes and exams harshly, but he will give you points back for some mistakes on their parts. He doesn't use moodle at all so its hard to know your grade. Overall, an okay class.
Clear in lecture and well prepared. Professor Burrell really knows calculus and would not only explain the math but outlined the types of problems students should prepare for. Of the questions I asked after class or during office hours I always received a clear and complete answered. Granted, don't expect grading to be a walk in the park.
Professor Burrell was a great teacher for Calc 1 (Math 127)! Though many students took this class who had already taken calculus in high school, I HAD NOT, and Burrell made this class totally doable even with no background calc. He is so personable and is a great lecturer (so great you won't even open the textbook)! Take it with Burrell if you can!
Though this class claims to require no prior calculus knowledge, I was sometimes struggling with an entire year of calculus already under my belt. Professor Burrell goes through the course material quickly but he is usually very clear. There aren't many assignments for this class so you have to make sure to stay on top of the ones you do have.
This was a solid class. His lectures are not too bad. He makes them interesting. Seems like a cool guy. He is easy to talk to if you have any problems or need help.
he is super clear!! i live him .
I struggled in this class having never taken pre calc or calc. Brian was a funny and caring guy but moved quickly. Do all of the homework in case you dont do well on the exams. I did poorly on all the exams except for the final which was far easier than expected. Go to the math help center in LGRT for help with the homework -it was a life saver.
Lectures can be boring and dry. But he does many examples in class and explains it in great detail. Sometimes he adds a few jokes and likes real world applications. Many of test questions are very similar to old homework. Seemingly accessible after class. 10 min Quiz every discussion meeting per week, but pretty easy.
Although the course content in homework and lessons weren't exactly useful for a good portion of the exams, Brian was an outstanding professor. He really knows what he is doing, and he is very helpful with any questions. The homework is really easy and should result in a huge grade booster. If you have any experience in Calc, you'll be just fine.
I had never taken a statistics class before and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy this class was. There are only 2 exams, but you have weekly quizzes to practice what you learned and the TAs are very accessible.
Professor Burrell is a great guy that shows a passion for what he does. He is very clear with the lectures, but if you skip them don't expect to get a good grade. The exams are multiple choice, so it's all or nothing, which is the only challenging part of the course. Show up, do the hw, study, and you'll get the grade.
Brian is a really fantastic teacher. While his lectures can be a bit dry he makes calc 127 as bearable as possible. One thing that really stood out to me was that I could email him at any time of day about anything and he would get back to me in minutes. Definitely, would recommend him for this class.
Although the lectures were sometimes boring, Brian did a really great job creating this course for students to be successful. 12 homework assignments, good TAs and he always gave us many examples for each problem. The midterm and final account for a majority of the grade but he gives review packets and the tests are always fair and not very hard.
Brian is a good teacher, he is very clear and doesnt try to trick you on quizzes and on the exams. He doesnt post his lecture notes so you have to go inorder to do well in the class. The final and the midterm are each worth a lot of points, so if you dont do good on one you might not get a good grade. But hes a very good teacher.
He was all over the place in lecture and extremely boring (with a huge ego). I sat in the front too so I wasn't being distracted by anyone or anything. Only HW and 3 exams (including final) count towards your grade. Do bad on one? You are screwed. I dropped this just so my GPA wasn't messed up. I suggest Adena Calden instead.
I didnt take any calc class in HS, so I was a little worried going into this class. Luckily Brian was a great teacher. He explained things in a tangible way and got straight to the point of what we were learning. He was so helpful if you had questions too. If you go to class and pay attention, youll do great. I'm pretty average at math and did well
prof Brian is honestly the best prof on campus and I would live in his lectures if I could.
Good teacher. Usual big classes so make sure to go to discussions. TA's are also super helpful, arguably more helpful. Attendance is not mandatory but its good to at least know the material if you are gonna skip or get notes from a friend. He assigns book work for home work so that's a need. Homework every week, quizzes in discussion, and 2 tests.
Overall, a great professor!! He explains concepts clearly and makes them easy to understand. He uses relatable examples to make this possible. He also lets you know where in the textbook you can refer to if you want a more detailed explanation, but I didn't find myself looking in the book often. The book is mainly used for homework questions.
Brian is a funny and great professor. Though the matrix is hard and the classes are short, his notes and examples are helpful and his exams are easy. The Wiley homework is annoying and much harder than his exams but work towards a checkmark and you'll be fine. It helps to have prior calculus knowledge.
Hands down the best calc teacher I've had. He teaches for the exams so you won't go to an exam and be faced with anything you haven't seen before. Delivers the material in a clear, concise way. Lectures aren't mandatory but you can't rely on the homework (which is annoying to deal with but an easy A) so go to class to learn the exam content.
Great man. Clear lectures. Everything is well explained and if you don't end up understanding, the TAs will definitely clear things up. Weekly homework assignments that aren't hard at all and will take at max an hour to do. Weekly quizzes as well which are easy if you go to lecture. Midterm and Final are very similar to the quizzes.
Great teacher for a boring class. Brain is extremely clear in his lectures and examples and tells you exactly what you'll need to known fro the midterm and final exam. Weekly quizzes and homework due in discussion. If you go to lecture, not a lot of outside studying is needed, just be sure to do the homework and go to discussion.
Definitely go to class because he will give you example problems and show you how to solve problems. The first exam is the easiest, so try to get an A. The second exam is verrrryy difficult, but Adena Calden makes the exams, so this isn't Burrell's fault. Go to class, study, and do your homework at the Calc Tutoring Center.
class was difficult. he was a good professor and tried to teach the material in an easy way. Make sure to get extra help if struggling
Brain is a great professor. He has a very dry sense of humor and usually sticks to what he's talking about. He moves very quickly but explains everything very clear and very thorough. If you go to every class and pay attention and put in a little bit of work you'll be fine.
He was a great professor. I thoroughly enjoyed taking his class. He was very thorough during his lectures, and he made his lessons easy to understand. The discussions are very useful as they go over problems for review. Weekly homework is pretty easy, and the exams are straightforward. Would definitely take another one of his classes.
He was very clear and very thorough. It was obvious he cared about the students and wanted to make sure we were well prepared. He told us when the homework wasn't enough practice and directed us to where we could find more problems. Highly recommend.
Professor Burrell explains everything clearly. I never took calculus before this and I found him to be pretty easy.
Brian is a great professor who explained things very clearly and answered the occasional questions if people asked. The class isn't easy but theres optional small group sessions and review sessions before exams outside of class that are available. First exam was easy but last 2 were hard. Prepare for the exams and you'll be fine. Some online HW.
Prof Burrell is my favorite math professor. His lectures are very clear and he prepares his students well for the exams and the homework. For Math 233 there was no written homework, only Webassign, yet Prof Burrell made a point of preparing us for tricky questions on the homework. I also find him to be a pretty funny and nice guy.
Very easy class, almost to the point of boring, but he makes it interesting. If you've taken any statistics class at all before, it will be extremely easy. He uses textbook for weekly homework that is due on the Wednesday discussion along with a quiz. If you get Janelle as your TA, you're set; she's amazing. Just do the work and it's an easy A.
Dont take calculus if you did not take it in high school. Brian isn't a bad professor but this class was tough. Go to SI reviews and test reviews. Tests are 25 multiple choice so if you get a few wrong, youre already down to a B. Be careful and take calculus BEFORE this class!
Brian makes statistics clear and not scary. The 8:30 lectures aren't mandatory, but they are really helpful because chances are, your TA will be garbage. Thankfully, Brian is a good lecturer. Weekly quizzes, but two get dropped, and two exams. The midterm was just like the study guide; the final was harder. The class is scaled though!
Lectures are honestly pointless. I had this class at 8:30 and went to maybe half of the lectures and passed with an A. You do have to go to discussions though as that is where all of your homework and quizzes are. Discussion didn't do much for me either. Be prepared to teach yourself the material. Try to rent the text on kindle.
For a generally easy class Burrell made it so much more confusing. He never had any type of structure to his notes just writing random problems on the board from homework that hadn't been assigned yet. Extremely dull and generally seemed like he had no idea what he was doing half the time. Easy testing as the criteria is not too complex.
I'm so glad I was in Prof. Burrell's section. He explained concepts super well, and took special care to tell us which problems were most crucial for grasping the material. He's one of the best teachers I've ever had at preparing us for the specific exams we take. Would absolutely recommend!
He is very clear in his approach to explaining the materials. He gives lots of practice problems and does not mind rephrasing if what he said did not make sense. This class is not one where you can just show up and expect to pass. You have to put in work but as long as you give a good amount of effort, you should be fine.
Professor Burrell is great. He always looks through upcoming homework and tells you which problems are gonna be tricky. He also tells you the main things you should focus on for the exams. His lectures keep you engaged and teach you everything you need to know. I always look forward to going to lecture and he is very receptive to questions.
He is a very good professor and really wants his students to understand the course material. He explains things very thoroughly, does a lot of practice problems and tells you exactly what will be seen on the exams and quizzes. His lectures can get boring, but he tries his best to keep things interesting. Homework is not difficult.
Never been a math person, but this class was very easy and probably the best math class I've ever taken. Information was given clearly and in a way that was easy to understand with many example problems. Discussion sessions are mandatory for the quizzes and to turn in homework but weren't very helpful. If you go to lecture, you'll do fine.
I had him for Stat111. He was a really good teacher and basically covers everything in the book. That being said, I HIGHLY suggest you go to his lectures because he teaches exactly what's going to be on the quiz. There's a quiz every discussion, but you take it at the end and he drops your two worst scores. No tests except the midterm and final.
While AP calc has made this class a breeze, the applied calc to the economy and markets were new to me, so lectures were a must regardless of my knowledge in calc. Notes aren't posted online, so either have someone send you the notes or go to class. He was kind of a hardo but overall an easy class for me.
He is so disorganized and doesn't even know what he's teaching
Brian makes this Gen-Ed class one hundred times more difficult than it has to be. He literally forgets that this is a 100 level course, and seriously the only reason I passed was because of the TA's. Seriously, one of the hardest classes I've ever taken which wouldn't of been so bad if it wasn't for the professor.
The class is designed poorly. The online HW requires a calc but the tests do no. Class time is split between learning how to HW and test work. There are multiple sections of the class and Brian doesn't make the test. Material he emphasizes isn't emphasized by the other lecturer who makes the tests. Brian's a good guy, and he has a huge vocabulary.
The exams have been designed to not use a calculator however the homework you need to use a calculator. Rather than teach the course to fit the exam type with no calculators, they teach it to fit the homework and show you how to use the calculator to find the answer. You are stuck teaching yourself when the exams come. Review test nothing like exam
The tests are not made my professor Burrell, and often the information he focuses on is not on the exam. The practice exams are helpful, but seemed to never be anything like the actual exams. There are multiple homework assignments every week that require a calculator, but calculators aren't allowed on exams.
I can't blame him for the quality of the course, but he would say that if you don't understand what's happening in class, just go to office hours. He ALWAYS would start an important lesson with two minutes left in class. I liked him as a person but not as a calc prof. The first exam was easy, but the second and third were annoyingly difficult.
Brian Burrell was quite possibly one of the best professors that I have had so far at UMass. In class, he explains the material clearly and the information provided in class is exactly what you need to complete your homework. I really enjoyed how this class was structured and overall enjoyed the class thoroughly. (as much as you can enjoy math)
I am terrible at math but this class was pretty easy. Still didn't enjoy but it's doable if you do all your work and go to every class. Textbook is like $30 online and you need it for homework. Graphing calculator is REQUIRED so plan on that expense as well. TA's grade everything so check their work! I caught some grading errors! final is worth 40%
Great guy, if you have questions about the homework he will go over it during class. He answers all the questions that you ask. Make sure you study well for tests. 3tests total.
One of my favorite professors from UMass. Structures lectures based on old exams and what may appear on future exams. He's also kind, considerate, and accessible outside of class. 10/10 recommend.
Prof Burrell is very straightforward and made stats completely understandable, even for someone who typically hates math. He fills pretty much every second of lecture with info so it can be a lot but he answers questions very clearly and is very approachable. Highly recommend.
Brian does a good job of explaining the material and makes math as interesting as it can be with his great personality. He does many example problems during class which is helpful. Exams make up most of the grade, but they are not ridiculously hard. If you do the hw and study you should be okay and I'm not a person that's good at math!
Fairly easy class as long as you go to the lectures and discussions. Attendance not mandatory but missing a lecture may make it harder to do the homework and take the quizzes. Should definitely bring notebook to write everything he says down. He explains things well and a bit fast but is always open to answer questions and has TA's to help too.
Im awful at math, like really bad. I was nervous going into this class but it really hasn't been that bad. If you're bad at math, try not to skip class. If you can easily pick up on whats going on just by reading the textbook, you don't have to show up. The discussions go over basically everything (shoutout Daveed, great guy).
Lectures are super straightforward and easy to follow. Same thing with weekly homework and quizzes. Show up, follow along, and you'll be fine (even if you're not great at math).
He didn't do live Zoom lectures after we went online, which wasn't great. Calc 3 is pretty easy as long as you're competent in differentiation/integration
If you're good at Calc and/or do the work, he has everything you need to succeed and doesn't ever try to trick you into failing. If you aren't any good naturally and don't plan to work at it rather hard, his format will not save you.
Literally went to every lecture, and had no idea what was happening. Loved the professor but the class was one of the hardest things I have ever completed and felt like the professor didn't explain things well. Did all the homework and got 100% on it but still somehow almost failed the class.
