exams r fair, helps us learn, homework is ok but has answers. He helps if you visit office
Great guy/person. Easy to get along with but class is brutal... if you take him, only take this class because you will have no time for other classes. Lots of hardcore homework. You basically learn on your own but he is always 100% willing to help and is helpful. Tests and quizes are brutal. Labs are fun and easy. 65% is equal to a C but good luck!
Must use textbook. Tardiness doesn't bother him, but you need to attend class to pass. Tests are EXTREMELY hard, 50-60% class averages during my class, he did curve them slightly though.
He is a genius type. Very fair and considerate to each person's effort. And, he has great passion for teaching. He's young minded, like a older brother. Test was hard but you will get better than you expected
Lectures on the basics, trys to prepare us for applying basic principles. Not an easy class, but is helpful to drop by office hours. He is very helpful when asked. Labs are reasonably interesting and usually related to text coverage.
WoW!Lord Jesus, this guy is something.he taught this class a lot that when he is explaining it..hes talking about it like it is a review to us. Not helpful at all...but also students dont stop him or ask any question! The key to pass this class read your book, teach urself and go to class(he may say something that the book won't explain clearly)
This teacher makes you work hard and learn. if you do your home work, quizes, and attendance you will get an A. all tests are take home except final, don't work as lazy, work hard i am sure you will get an A, and his is very helpful teacher.
Doesn't really teach. Read the book and study it, that's the only way to learn. Rambles on and on, and is boring. Can't remember him actually teaching that helped me understand.
Class is very difficult. I found myself putting most of my time and energy into this class in order to get a good grade. The professor expects way too much out of what his students can accomplish in a week in his online class. He is very knowledgeable, but not very helpful. If you take him online, expect it to be a full-time job.
Online homework is easy and free, tells us if it is right - hints are sometimes useful. Tests are hard, but gives extra credit. Lectures are as good as can be expected, he tires to connect the ideas to real life examples. Labs are reasonably fun and enlightening.
The first test was fair but not easy, the homework is reasonable and related to the test. The sample exam was really similar to the test. The class has been good to me so far
This is an online course that requires regular participation. I thought I was failing due to exams, but as it turns out exercises and participation give me an A/B at the moment. The class is very smooth, predictable, & interesting. My only complaint: blackboard exams are horrific, the campus should do something about the website responsiveness.
Not hard, but challenging. He makes his class fun, Iclicker, homework, and labs bring your grade up. Extra credit on exams, fair grading. I would recommend his class.
Very good professor. He's much easier to follow than any of the other physics teachers I've had, and has a great interest in what he teaches. If you do all of the homework and all of the labs, you will naturally get a good grade on the tests.
THE HARDEST ONLINE CLASS EVER! So many exercises and hours and hours of videos each week. Too much! Final took 3 hours! Grades fair but if you don't have hours for homework don't take this class!
I got 60/100, 31.5/50, 20/50, 85/100(final), He dropped the lowest score. I did every Homework n Lap sheets. Then, I got A. I reall suprised because my test scores were too bad although the final was easy. If you don't get A,that's because you didn't study PHYC at least 4 hours a week alone(except class time)or you give it up.
I'm taking his summer class and everything is going well. Homework and labs are easy. he really doesn't care too much about them and lets the students to turn them in late.
The hardest online class I've ever taken. WAY too many hours of videos to watch. The exams are extremely difficult - none of the material put on them is from the homework. Some of the questions are so general that they are impossible to answer. I did EVERYTHING required and barely passed and I am a 4.0 student. Take only if you have 30 hours a wk.
Online class was not any easier than taking an on-campus course, so don't choose this class if that's your reason. A lot of required videos and homework, and tests are brutally hard. Honestly, I feel like Mr. Carter makes the class harder to weed out people that thought it would be easier online. That being said, I got an A because I studied hard!
This class is the worst class that I've ever attended in Grossmont.Lots of friends told me that PSC 110 would be a good choice since it is not hard, and it is interesting. However, when I took this class online this semester, it just became my worst nightmare.Take it if you want to be a scientist. Tons of work to do and super hard test.terrible!
Really bad teacher. Doesn't really teach you rather than just show you and expect you to learn from it. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Homework - easy. Labs - easy. Tests - Not so easy. However. it is quite possible to do well on the tests when he has them online. This means you can use your book, but you do have a time limit, so don't spend huge amounts of time looking up one answer. He is very smart, but I wish he could dumb it down a little bit for people like me :p
While perhaps not entirely excellent in his teaching approach, he does teach enough and more. It is up to the student to supplement their education with whatever they feel they don't get in class. He clearly states his office hours and is quite helpful with problems. If you take his course, expect to have questions. It will likely not be easy.
Carter is an excellent teacher and down to earth dude. Has homework and videos to watch online. Do not put it off till last weekend. Had no interest in science until this class. Not an easy A! be prepared to work and learn if do the footwork everything in his class will follow.
Cool guy. TERRIBLE teacher. Worst experience with a teacher thus far at grossmont.
If you need to take a lab for physical science. Definiteley take him! The labs are a bit difficult at first, but you'll quickly get the hang of it. Labs are 80% of your grade. "Quizes" are 10% but he never actually gave us a quiz. Final is 10%. And you only need an 85% in the class to have an A. However, attendance is mandatory. Great teacher!
good online class home work is easy test you cannot go back and check class is easy work is minimal
Prof. Carter is a nice guy but he is not a very good teacher. He presents concepts poorly and I found his methods of teaching the chapter contents relatively ineffective.
No disrespect to Mr. Carter, but he was not helpful in learning entry level physics at all. His curriclum was solid, and it is easy to get an A in his class if that's all your after, but dont expect to get much out of the class as he clearly does not teach to the level of the class.
Hands down the worst teacher I have ever had in college. If you want to pass he is easy because homework, participation, and labs are 60% of your grade and he drops an exam. If you want an A, good freaking luck. He doesn't give partial credit on exams and his lectures are completely worthless. Most(!) of the class failed the first exam. Thee worst!
Carter is a brilliant physicist but an awful teacher. He teaches concepts poorly and often ends up on tangents while lecturing. An easy class to pass since HW, labs and participation are 60% of your grade. Make sure you study all of the HW problems at the end of the chapter and you will be solid for tests.
Super smart, super funny, but I didn't learn much physics in his class. His lectures were useless, so I stopped going after two weeks. But, with the help of some Khan Academy and my textbook, I pulled off an A. His tests are really hard. Fortunately, exams are only worth 40% and he drops a low exam, including the final. DO THE HOMEWORK AND LABS.
Took this class and learned a lot. Physics is tough and Prof. Carter knows it well. He made it very understandable with the lectures. He is also a great guy and is always willing to help everyone understand things they are struggling with. I switched my major to Physics after his class. Best Prof. at Grossmont by far. Carter is 100% Legit!
This teacher has a very blunt teaching style. He has opinions about the campus and shares them in a funny way during class. He is the Physics Chair, so he can. For Physics 140 he gives 4 tests, one of which is the final, and he drops one of them. As a result you can drop the final. He gives around 15 labs, with one dropped. His class is good.
Bases his tests off the hardest questions in the book. Hard to follow his lectures because he doesn't write each step or draws diagram with bunch of lines. He teaches so many classes that he assumes we all know the same things as the other class.
Took physical science online. The tests are hard, don't assume you can get away with not reading all the material because the class is online. Some of the material we had to watch was questionable, such as documentaries "debunking" climate change and recycling, neither of which were relevant to the tests or textbook. He will respond to emails tho.
If you are at all busy do not take this class. I was taking 5 classes and working two jobs and he expects you to do so much work! There are at least 8 hours of videos, about 50 pages in each chapter and there are no study guides for any tests.
Brian could be a good professor - he knows the material and the labs are well-organized. Unfortunately, he likes to ramble on during lectures and doesn't teach the material; you'll have to teach yourself. Tests are very difficult. Class attendance dropped drastically after the first few weeks because no one wanted to be there.
He definitely knows Physics but the lectures do not always follow the textbook in content or style. He has emphasized topics that the book skipped over and vice versa. Many times he solves problems using more advanced methods than the book does and confuses the class. He would be an excellent lab instructor, but in class you need to teach yourself.
This class was UNBELIEVABLE. The amount of homework I had to do was over the top. Brian Carter genuinely cared about his students but how the online class was run, he couldn't help you if one of your videos stopped working. If you take this class, be prepared to be frustrated at how much time you spend watching dumb irrelevant videos.
This class is very difficult, yet easy to pass. There are HOURS of videos due each week & many exercise problem's to work through. There are 4 exams during the semester, the lowest score dropped. If you do okay on the exams and watch all the hours of videos and do the exercise you will sure get an A in the class.
If you have a lot of time on your hands then this'll be a good class for you. All you do is watch a total of 3 hour videos and answer tons of questions each week. Theres no help at all, test are difficult because there are no study guides. You have to be on top of things or else you'll get left behind.
this guy would be a great teacher if he actually took the time to explain how to do the math, i swear its simple stuff no harder than calculus, but he does not teach the information well at all, goes off on tangents about how his day sucked or something literally every day, 75% is a B but it still wont come too easy, tests are hard
I'm taking his online class this semester. Hours and hours of work each week. Mostly videos. It's not too bad though, as long as you spread out the work during the week. Everything is due on Sunday at midnight. Responds back to emails quickly and is pretty helpful. My only complaint is that there aren't any study guides for the exams.
This astronomy class was definitely a challenge. Each week there are about 4 hours of videos and about 20 text book questions. The thing is each question has a part a, b, c... This class is very time consuming. I would say you have to spend an hour or two each night to do well in this class. Sadly, there are no study guides for the tests.
ASTR110 Dr. Carter was such a great Professor. Yes there were hours of videos and lot of easy fill in the blank questions but they were all relevant and interesting. Science is not my best subject and I emailed him after the first exam letting him know. The grades are curved. There is not a study guide, lowest exam is dropped. Easy to contact too.
Lectures were made up mostly of homework questions, in which he would pick questions at random to practice. The way he would show us how to do these problems was frustrating, as it often left me confused. I came out of that class without much knowledge gained, and very frustrated. Other students felt similarly. Least desirable instructor I've had.
Science is not my thing. 8 hours of videos and homework each week. Only got an A because of his grade curve. This was the hardest & most tedious class I have ever taken online.
Terrible. Definitely does not help you. Don't even think of taking online classes, for if you had any technical problem and SEND A PROF OF THE PROBLEM YOU HAD, HE WILL NOT HELP. Lot's of ridicules exercises that you spend between 10 to 20 hours a week to do and their grade still won't help you much for they're not worth a lot, the exams worth more.
Tons of homework. Barely taught the entire semester. Hed come into class, complain about his morning, then tell stories for the rest of class. Labs were explained poorly. Get ready to do ridiculous amounts of homework.
I wish I took the reviews more seriously! Starting out the bookwork is like 3-4 part questions (for only 1 measly point), but by the end of the semester there are parts a-z questions for the same 1 point! He has up to 30 videos a week averaging 10-20 minutes which is ridiculous. NO study guides. A LOT OF BUSY WORK. Beware his online classes!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Each week we have 6-10 hours of videos to watch(you have to click buttons throughout the video for credit, and cannot leave the tab or it pauses), along with exercises to complete(must get them correct for credit). His tests do not give enough time, and you cannot go back to previous ?'s!! he doesn't teach/post at ALL!!
I wish I took the rating more seriously too. His online class makes you watch approximately 5 hours worth of video per week on top of spending a few hours answering questions. Not worth it at all. Do not take him
Wish I had read reviews before taking this class. The amount of videos and difficulty of homework are completely uncharacteristic of an INTRO class. This suuuucks and I can't drop because I need this class this semester for my degree. Don't take this course with him if possible. I am overloaded because of this course.
Underachieving professor. He has a PH.D. I went to his office hours for help because I was struggling in his class. We went over some of the practice problems and he got the, wrong multiple times. Does not know his material, but expects a lot out of his students. DO NO TAKE! I learned the hard way.
I can honestly say I was very overwhelmed with the number of videos we have to watch every week and you have to pay attention or you'll miss the cues and have to start all over. Additionally, it was very annoying struggling with a question and being unable to get the assistance e you need from the professor because he wants you to figure it out.
If you are taking this course for GE credits, beware! This course while graded on a generous curve, is difficult and extremely time consuming. Videos range from 2-6 hours and are assigned weekly. Assignments take even longer. Amount of time allotted for quizzes is not enough. Material covered on quizzes way more detailed than in textbook.
I am a straight A student with intense dedication, and this class was a nightmare. I am pretty sure Brian Carter hates teaching, or at least hates students. His methods for my online course were abusive and I cried more than once. I missed entire days with my kids because of the 20 hrs a week required for this ONE of my 4 courses that semester.
Professor Carter is the worst Physics professor ever, he is much worse when you take him over the summer, if you take him, you are gonna have to learn most of the stuff on your own. Summer class with him was so difficult some people either failed and had to retake or dropped not even a week in. Take him as a last resort if you plan on taking him.
Carter is the worse professor, he gives an unnecessary amount of problems on hw. Tests were even more difficult than hw. He is not really much help when you ask him, he makes you feel completely dumb as he has a super complicated way of solving problems. I should have taken the bad reviews on him more seriously.
Gives way too many questions for wileyplus hw. No matter how much I studied, I still end up doing terrible on his exams. I think he gets a thrill from watching students struggle in his class. He makes intro level classes like this one difficult for no reason. He will make your life miserable if you take him as your physics professor.
I would not recommend to anyone never communicated anything after the second week of class and has an insane amount of online homework.
I am a hardworking determined student who took a full load of courses, including Astronomy 110. Hardest course Ive ever encountered. The videos are over the top and I honestly didnt learn anything from this course. The test are a minute per question. The exams were 100 questions in 90 minutes. The course material didnt match the test.
I will admit. He is a nice guy and good life coach, but in terms of a teacher no. My first complaint is that he does not lecture, but instead talks about anything and gets easily off topic. Online labs are terrible. The homework is nothing like the book. The book has mistakes. Deducts you 10 points if you get it wrong. Does not respond to emails.
Worse physics professor at grossmont in my opinion. His tests made no sense because there were so many questions in such little time. Going to his optional lectures over zoom to learn the material didnt help because you would just end up being more confused. Stay away from this professor, especially during summer!
Overall he was not a great teacher by any means. I took this class online so his in person classes might be different but he put no effort into putting together the material. He assigned MANY videos each week that were both long and repetitive. The questions he assigned were vague with little help to find the answers. The quizzes were very hard too
Professor Carter does not hover over students and his class is for students who work independently. His teaching style prepares students to succeed when they move on to a four-year college. Professor Carter answers emails in a timely manner and works with students when they reach out. Be ready for a lot of homework and trick questions on quizzes.
I admit his labs were easy, but he gave so much hw and the last 3 exams were really difficult. A lot of people were so confused on what to do the first week that a few of them ended up dropping 3 days after class started. If he was more organized, he would have been a better professor. Do not take him during summer!
This class is very video heavy and hard to keep up with if you don't start the videos the day they come out. The questions and textbook reading need to pass the quizzes on top of that are also really hard to keep up with. I would suggest taking a different professor if you are interested in taking an astronomy class.
Was my lab professor, but his lectures were missing steps for our lab and I had to go to his office hours many times. But allows lab reports to be submitted until the semester ends and isn't a harsh grader. Overall, he's nice but his lectures aren't helpful and you need a class group chat to ask for help.
I took this class to meet one of my requirements for my ADT. This class was very poorly structured. We spent more time on YouTube and talking about his personal life than actually learning physics. We did not open the textbook until over half way through the semester. His syllabus was incorrect. We were behind all the other physics classes.
I didn't even last a week and I was able to tell that his class was going nowhere whit his methods. The couple of classes I took with him he didn't even talked about physics other than an accumulated 30 min at most. He told us that he only had a few more years to teach so it did not really matter if he actually taught us or not.
Using Stemplosion was very frustrating & had to pay $25 +the textbook. There are about 100 "exercises & videos" to do per week + discussion &quiz. There are no lectures/PowerPoint (read the textbook chapters, watch videos, and answer questions). It first told me that it wasn't for credit so I got behind. Stemplosion is outdated & irritating to use.
Brilliant guy, not so good of a teacher. Likes to show off his math skills instead of teaching towards students. Explains concepts in ways that make sense to him, not students. Fairly easy labs, stemplosion can be annoying. Tests are graded solely on the answers, not the process. Would be a much better professor if he explained concepts clearly.
Professor Carter's class is very difficult. Lectures are too fast and hard to follow. Office hours are unhelpful, and exams on the Willey platform are extremely hard. Grading is delayed, with no timely feedback. I dropped the class due to these issues. In conclusion, DON'T TAKE IT WITH HIM
AVOID IN SUMMER! This guy is God awful, he is not a teacher. He skims through textbook chapters for like 20-30min and spends rest time solving problems and rambling to himself. I watched him spend 45 min on a level 3 question getting it wrong twice before he finally got the answer. I found a YT vid that solved it in 8 min. Thiswill ruinGPAavoid!
It's all true. Sidetracked easily, constant tangents (NEVER bring up MAME). Short lecture followed by hours of chapter problems. His left-handedness combined with his outdated overhead camera setup makes note-taking difficult. He'll spend an hour on a problem, but you get 15 minutes to do it on the test. Goes through a forest's worth of paper.
Teaching is pretty hands-off and uninvolved from this guy. I'm currently taking the online accelerated course, and it's LOADED with PBS videos combined with fill-in-the-blank exercises from the textbook (StemPlosion). The videos often feel irrelevant to the corresponding textbook chapters and seem like a waste of time. Make time for the videos!
Very hands-off teacher. If taking the accelerated online course, you need at least 20hrs/week to do the homework and watch all of the required videos. They are mostly outdated and only slightly relevant to the chapter, but worthless in regards to the quizzes. Stemplosion's grading is super precise and frustrating. Try to get a different teacher.
If you want to get success in Physics class at Grossmont never ever take class with this professor. He wont grade the assignment till last day of the semester and he is very tough.
no feedback. didn't explain things well and goes very quickly. five tries on homework with no guidance and aren't shown how to do it if you get it wrong (how it is in calc). in person class but tests online, a few digits off=youre wrong, doesn't grade work on exam. how are we supposed to learn if we have no feedback? never though i'd drop a class
tests are just terribly designed.
Simple & Easy A type of professor. All exams are open note and taken on Zoom. There are two paid homework sites, one for homework and one for lab. They cost about 100 total. All works are easy. There are two labs work per week (short term, 1 for exam week), and Zoom meetings are not required for attendance. Downside: Requires good self-study skill.
The class is thought by giving you a physics question and you have five tries to learn how to do it. If you can't do it then you move on with no explanation. The labs are online which is interesting but clunky while he brags about the amount of work he put into creating the online lab in his videos from 3 years ago.
I took this class online & he was very nice over email and genuinely did help me out but he does not lecture. He just assigns like over 6 hours in mandatory unskippable videos to watch each week. He doesnt even teach you just makes you do so much busy work. If you r taking for credit take him cuz its easy but if ur interested in astronomy no.
Brian Carter was quite possibly the worst teacher I have had at grossmont. He refuses to show grades till the last 2 weeks of the semester, his lectures are just tangents about which person(his wife mainly) he hates today. He also hates athletes. I really tried for that A but he just treated everyone in the class bad and 2/3 of the class Withdrew.
