The is an online class. yet it is a very difficult class surprisingly. Everything is from the book and his lectures are based around the readings. There is a lot of reading and also a couple writing assignments. He is very consistant with his grading and his lectures are clear. Don't take this class expecting an easy A. you have to treat it normall
Had him back in fall 2010. He basically teaches what you read in the book but is very helpful if you don't understand anything. The tests were easy too b/c he gave us a guideline with everything we needed to know (key terms and essay questions). Can get boring at times but better than other history teachers I had like Doan.Doan sucks.
Amazing online class. Casserly is very organized and clear in his instructions. With every assignment he sends it back to you graded with everything you did right/wrong. I hated history before this professor. I 100% recommend him. I'm a running start student and this was my first online class and I'm so glad I took it. Definitely try to ge
I love this class, and I've never been into history! There are 2 papers, that aren't bad, 6 quizes, a midterm and a Final. Drops the lowest quiz score! He is always clear on exactly what he wants from you, provides study guide, and cares about the success of his students. He is always easy to meet with about your grade and what to improve!
#1 ignore him the first day. He says scary things like "there are no multiple choice test". Seriously show up, pay attention, take notes and enjoy history from someone who loves the subject. He works with everyone. He makes himself available to help you with the 2 papers you have to write by office hours or emails. Great class
1st day, strict demeanor, relaxes and cracks jokes later in quarter. Very helpful, he knows his material and isn't afraid to answer your questions. Fair bit of reading, but attend every class and do the readings and you will do fine. He uses awesome analogies related to Seattle and history. I definitely would take his classes again.
Easily the best professor I have taken at BC. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject, doesn't assign unnecessary work, and he has an awesome accent as well.
LOVED this professor. He is very willing to help, prompts in class discussion, and is genuinely interested in what he is teaching. I really enjoyed this class, and would take ANYTHING that he taught just to have him as a teacher. Definitely my favorite professor so far.
Great teacher! Crystal clear, funny explanations that are engaging and fascinating. Extremely knowledgeable. Term paper is no easy task but he will help if you ask. Don't miss a day of class for lectures or attendance points. Seems very serious at the start of the quarter, loosens up/more jovial by about a week in. So glad I took his class!
This teacher is awesome! Early on he will be serious but dont worry, he loosens up as the quarter goes on. He can make funny jokes too, like one day he joked how the Disney film Pocahontas was inaccurate. Quizzes and tests are essays but are not too hard Only problem was the research paper can be a drag. But if ur taking history, take Casserly!
FANTASTIC history teacher. I took Pacific Northwest History form him, and he really knows his stuff, is passionate about it, and while he may come off as strict at the beginning of the quarter, he gets better over time and is a very clear, helpful, and fair teacher. Be prepared to at least skim all assigned readings, study a decent amount for tests
Class was pretty hard in my opinion. History isn't a strong subject for me, so I found readings pretty boring. He graded the major tests really hard, and want VERY detailed answers. Quizzes are pretty hard, but you can do fine if you study. He's a pretty tough grader, but is available to help and give feedback.
He is a great professor! This is my first quarter at BC, but he is very clear in his directions! Just participate and do as many of the readings as possible, you will need them for the quizzes and papers! USE HIS OFFICE HOURS! He is super helpful if you go in & meet with him! Also send him parts of a paper you are working on & he will correct it!(:
The hardest grader you'll ever have in your life. He is passionate about his teachings, and is mostly clear.
He is clear when he teaches class. Very hard grader. He should ease up on grading
HARD GRADER. Class was out of 1000 points total. Must have at least 950 points for an A. But grades harshly on essays (and midterms) and exams. Good luck.
He teaches differently then most history teachers-- you dont have to remember any exact dates, just where events would be on a timeline. We learned a summary of the history basically. Vocab is important. He assigns lots of reading, sometimes super long. Read everything-- it will help with your papers. Tests/Quizzes: Always written, short answer.
He is hands down the best professor ever. Although people say that he's a harsh grader, he is willing to help you out if you see him during his office hours. He assigns readings everyday and does in-class discussions often. I would recommend his class to anyone. I will definitely take another one of his classes again.
Great teacher, pretty easy. Mostly read out of the primary source book and only used the textbook for essays. Two essays, frequent quizzes, a midterm and a final. A lot of the quizzes were open book and all were short answer. There's a lot of group work and discussions. I think he graded fairly. I plan on taking more classes from him.
One of the best history teachers I've had. He does grade hard, but as long as you do the readings, study, and participate you'll do fine. He notices if you do the work and take notes. He is very knowledgeable and explains the curriculum very well with visual powerpoints and videos. He will make time to meet out of class. Overall, great teacher!
This is the most helpful Professor. He loves his subject and is very happy to help students when ever needed. I highly recommend him to anyone even if you absolutely hate the subject!
Can be very nice if you are on his good side. Let's you have 3 free skips that don't effect your grade. Heavy participation and attendance points. STUDY for midterm!
Dr. Brian Casserly is pretty dope. I have over 100% in his class and so do others, basically as long as you kinda care and show up you'll do just fine. When he speaks it's kinda crazy cause he speaks so eloquently it's almost like he is writing an essay as he speaks.
He is super helpful and is very clear on expectations. There were extra credit opportunities which boosted my grade a lot. If you pay attention, do your work, and show up, you should be able to get an easy A.
I did take different history classes with different teachers in the past but none of them clearly explained the subject that we were learning in class. He is really good at teaching you what you need to know for the future and for finals.
This was defienetly my best teacher , always ready to help you whenever you ask him. Lectures was really good , you will get a lot of information there . Working in groups works great as for me too. Anyways it is defienetly a best class to take .
Let me start off by saying the Brian Casserly is probably one of the best if not the best History teachers I have ever had. He is extremely engaging and his lectures teach you so much. He does not appreciate screw-offs in his class as I would expect and he makes you earn your grade, but hey, what's the point of school if you don't earn it???
Awesome professor, he makes history so interesting and knows a lot of stories to flesh out the people you read about in the textbook. No exactly a tough grader but not easy either, if you work at your papers you'll do well, and he's forgiving as far as stylegrammar as long as the content is good. Awesome accent, awesome prof. Will take again.
I took Dr. Casserly's class because it fit my Winter quarter schedule. I went in expecting boring lectures and an ungodly amount of homework. However, I am pleased to say I was proven wrong. Casserly puts time and effort into his lectures and isn't like most teachers who will stick to the slides. He gives additional information that is very helpful
Brian is a great guy. He is VERY organized, prepared for class, always starts and ends on time, and occasionally early), gives great feedback, and is a reasonable teacher. I am not super interested in history, but he definitely made it enjoyable. Just be respectful and he will respect you. Not an easy A, but not a super hard one ether.
Brian Casserly is quite possibly the best teacher I have ever had. His lectures and slides are super interesting, he is always prepared, and he really takes time to invest in his students and make sure they are doing well. Not an easy A, but you'll succeed if you work for it.
Casserly gives mediocre lectures and is a great instructor overall. He is always willing to help you prepare for homework and the midtermfinal, don't be afraid to utilize his office hours because if you do, you're garenteed a good grade. Although tidious, try to keep up on daily reading assignments.
Dr. Casserly is an awesome teacher, the best I've had so far. He assigns a lot of reading, but as the quarter continues, it gets easier. His lectures are well prepared, very intriguing, and humorous. Definitely not an easy A; I put most of my time and effort into his class. But overall, a great professor and I would highly recommend him.
I absolutely loved this class and his lectures were really interesting (to me at least). He really awakened my inner history nerd and made be excited to learn about it. His home work and papers are easy as long as you follow the guidelines and he gives good feedback. I highly recommend his class! I plan on taking 250 with him so he really is good!
I DON'T THINK I HAVE EVER LOVED HISTORY UNTIL I TOOK THIS CLASS. BY FAR, THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. HE IS SO PREPARED FOR CLASS AND KNOWS EVERTHING, I MEAN EVERYTHING HE IS TALKING ABOUT. HE IS ALSO VERY CHILL AND FUNNY ONCE YOU GET TO KOW HIM. EVERYONE THINKS HE'S QUIET AND AWK BUT HES ACTUALLY SO FUNNY! TAKE HIS CLASS!
He did not give many assignmrnts, though when he did they were essays. He is a pretty harsh grader on essays, but if you put allot of effort in you will probably be fine, just pay attention to detail. He is a great teacher and makes the class very enjoyable, just fought on essays. I would take him again if I had to take another history course.
Highly recommend this class. Lots of reading, but lectures are consistently interesting and engaging. His lecturing voice demands attention in a way that makes you focused. Prepare to discuss w/ classmates, read textbook/ e-doc, raise hand in-class. He tries to make response to questions work. Overall just seems like the ideal guy to be a teacher.
Iv'e taken Dr. Casserly for two quarters now, and he is by far the BEST teacher at BC. He is very professional and KNOWS HIS STUFF. He explains everything extremely well and will always answer your questions in depth and cares about your learning. He involves students in the lecture, which makes it more engaging-can be funny too. All around great.
I dislike history, but this class was actually engaging. His lectures are clear and informative. He assigns several short and long essay assignments (as well as extra credit), but provides good help if asked. You'll do well as long as you attend class, finish assignments, and study for the midterm and final. I would definitely take his class again.
Great teacher. Wish I could take more classes from him, but they regrettably don't fit into my schedule. Also, his voice is great. Just sayin'
History used to be my least favorite subject, but I'm considering a minor in it because of him. He found perfect balance between lectures, class participation, and group questions. The readings, while plentiful, were relevant and interesting. He's extremely knowledgeable and interested in what he teaches and also very approachable. Really fun guy!
Dr. Casserly made me appreciate history in ways I never thought I would. I always recommend him to my friends for history. Have to work for that A but definitely worth it. Instructions are always clear and students know what is expected of them. Always there to help and a friendly approachable guy.(:
Best history teacher I've had. His lectures aren't boring, and he gives time for you to discuss the material with other people. To get an A in the class, you need to pay attention and take notes, show up to class, do the homework, and you have to do really well on the essays, because he's a pretty hard grader (he doesn't grade hard on homework.)
Dr. Casserly was a great professor! His midterm and final are fairly easy but his papers are tough. He is there if you need to ask questions and will even read over your paper and give some feed back. Over all best history teacher ever!
Professor Casserly was a great professor. He assigns only 6 homework assignments in a quarter and 2 papers, along with the midterm and final exam. You can expect to get A's on your homework assignments really easily. The papers are harder but he is very helpful, especially during office hours!
Dr. Casserly is a great professor. His class was really organized and his lectures were detailed but clear. There were a lot of discussions in the class. Homework assignments were easy A's and the essays were not too difficult either.
His lectures are perfect and easy to understand, but he's a tough grader. He expects you to be an effective writer (papers in this class are so much harder than ENG201 wt..). If you an easy A, this class is not the right class for you. RIP me.
Brian is a wonderful teacher, he gives great lectures and will let you redo a few assignments if needed, there are a lot of readings and it is beneficial to you to read makes class discussion better, his class is easy to take notes in and there are a few extra credit opportunities. Great teacher nice and understanding, wants you to succeed.
He grades pretty easily and gives everything back right away with information on how you can improve your score. He also gives you a chance to redo certain assignments to make sure you get a better score. He answers emails overnight and is always available to help with class work and essays outside of class. AMAZING LECTURES! I would take him again
By far my favorite history teacher that I've ever had. He truly cares about what he's teaching and wants you to understand it also. Gave great feedback on papers and homework assignments and always responded within a day to emails. If you put the effort in and try on the assignments you will be rewarded.
Casserly is an amazing, phenomenal teacher. He's clear, very engaging lecture style, and focuses on what's important. It's not all dates and names. He has high expectations and if you work hard you can go far in his class. He genuinely cares about his students, is a very reasonable grader, great sense of humor. TAKE HIM RIGHT NOW!!
Professor Casserly is a wonderful teacher who gives interesting lectures and balances lecturing and class work. Taking this class, I learned so much about history. Medium difficulty with weekly homeworks, 2 essays, and midterm and final. Highly recommend class and teacher!
He's a really funny guy overall which makes classes/lectures interesting. Doesn't let lack of input from students slow down the class, but does expect you to participate. If you have the choice, take him.
Great teacher would definitley take another one of his classes
Teacher is very passionate and knowledgeable about history. He gives good improving feedback, and is not too hard in my opinion. He is a slightly harder grader than most teachers I've had, but he gives you lots of opportunities to keep your grade up. Lectures can get boring, but overall he was a really great teacher!
Brian was an amazing history teacher! I'm that type of person that hates history but the way he lectures is so interesting and easy to pay attention. He has a super nice personality and is willing to help you even outside of class. I would definitely take another class with this professor.
I LOVED Dr. Casserly! He is very passionate about his work and he's very knowledgable. I sat in the front row and his loud voice frightened me sometimes, but that is the only negative. He offered extra credit and drops your lowest HW grade. The class overall is very chill and I feel like I learned a lot.
Casserly is a great professor. I genuinely hated history before I took his class and he was able to make history interesting and fun to learn. We had two papers that were worth the most points. Exams were easy. ATTEND CLASS. Participation and Attendance matters for him! Was willing to meet outside of class. Definitely recommend him.
He was a really awesome teacher. His lectures are interesting and easy to understand. He grades the homework pretty easily, but is tougher on the papers. However, if you go to office hours he'll look at your whole paper and pretty much tell you what to write. The midterm and final are easy and he gives extra credit.
Brian Casserly gives AMAZING lectures but is a super tough grader. He slaughtered my papers but does allow for revision and extra credit opportunities which is nice. Midterm and finals are easy just go to class and pay attention to the lectures. Personally would not take his class again because he is such a tough grader.
He's amazing. Clear graded. 2 papers that he helps you outside of class with. He gives as much effort to you as you give to him. 2 tests, lets you bring a flash card with notes on it for the exam. 6 Hw assignments, pretty simple and clear, takes lowest Hw grade off your grade. Also offers extra credit. Take him highly recommend.
Casserly is a fantastic professor. His lectures are energetic and informative. His grading standards are very clear. He is very funny and helpful to students. One of the very best at Bellevue College.
I have had this teacher 3 times before, and have enjoyed all the classes. I got an A out of his class all three times but they were not easy to achieve . students have to work hard. But he does a very good job making sure students know the material. Lecture heavy but very fun lectures.
If you need to take a history class and he offers it, take it! I had 148 with him and he had great lectures and kept the class interesting. I am not a big history fan, but his class was fun for me and I received an A. he is also open to meeting outside of class to look at papers before due date. There is also extra credit.
The best history teacher I have ever had. Made lectures interesting and easy to understand, while still cracking jokes along the way. Clearly states how the work is expected, and drops the lowest essay grade at the end of the semester. Lecture heavy, but uses powerpoints to split them up well and make them easy to follow along.
Brian is a really nice professor. His lectures made history more interesting for me. Homework assignments every week, which are very easy to understand. Lots of readings for class but I never read em. 2 big papers; he's a very tough grader so don't wait last minute to do the essays, spend a lot of time on them. Overall, Casserly is great.
Humanities are my thing, I usually get As in history and English classes. This time I really had to work for it. The A I got in this class did not come easy. Casserly lacks specificity when it comes to the 2 big essays. Use his office hours and give him your essay to review prior to the due date.
He is not a bad teacher if you have to take him. All classes were lectures and sometimes got very boring. One homework a week which were a 1 page essay. There were two papers. The first paper he lets you revise for a higher score. Utilize him for the papers. He will tell you what to write. He knows what he is talking about.
Dr. Casserly is a fantastic professor. His lectures are great. He is very helpful and has a nice sense of humor. He does a really good job of keeping the class engaged. I have taken 2 of his history courses and loved both of them. Other than an essay, the workload is very limited. His grading standards are not tough. Overall a great option.
Very good professor that answers questions thoroughly but will admit when he doesn't know something. Reasonable grader that will help you with the paper outside of class. Two papers, you can revise the first and extra credit opportunities. Highly recommend. I usually HATE history but glad I took him. Very good for HST 148 also.
I don't like history but Dr. Casserly made the topics very fun and easy to learn. Lectures were very cool to listen to for a morning class. Mini essays due every week (that aren't very hard at all) over readings; you choose the prompt you want. 2 major essays were not easy but not super hard either. It's not really required but participate a lot!!
His lectures are really interesting and he has a strong voice that keeps your attention. He is very straightforward and clear with what he expects you to do on papers and homework. He does take attendance, so go to class or you'll start losing points after 3 absences. Also, you are taught almost everything in his lectures so don't skip class.
Lectures were repetitive. Homework assignments were all of the same nature. Accessible outside of class. Relatively slow grader but he is fair. Do your homework and seek clarification from Dr. Casserly.
Mr. Casserly is my favorite teacher on campus. He is professional yet funny and makes the most boring sounding subjects more interesting than any avenger's movies to date! I've taken all of his classes since I have started at Bellevue College and if you put in the effort you will NOT be disappointed with this king among men.
He is a GREAT history teacher. I have really enjoyed this class and him as a professor. He is super nice and really knows what he is talking about. Lots of good discussion in the class. You have one homework assignment every week (a one age paper).
Class is super enjoyable and his lectures flow really well! There are weekly one-pagers and one or two big papers, but no tests. He is accessible on campus and will review papers with you, allow you to revise and resubmit them, etc. He doesn't post class notes so attendance is important, plus it's for points. Good sense of humor- highly recommend.
I have always hated history classes, but he makes it very interesting. There is one homework assignment each week, and two papers. You listen to his lectures and learn and then just answer a question that fills up half a page. Really great professor, he wants to see you succeed. You need to participate.
You'll be hard pressed to find a better professor at BC. Fantastic lectures- great ability to keep students engaged. Very funny. Fair workload- there is basically one homework assignment per week, an essay, a midterm, and a final. Dr. Casserly is hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had in my academic career.
It's hard to know what he wants to see on the homework and essay assignments, so make sure you take advantage of his office hours, or email him for clarification. Especially for the essays: if you ask him (politely) to look over your essay outline, he'll virtually tell you exactly what he's looking for. So use office hours!
He is a very friendly professor. He follows a simple philosophy: you reap what you sow; if you put in the effort, you'll get good grades. His lectures are enjoyable and informative. He is available outside of class. He gives constructive feedback. Be prepared to read the required materials and participate in class.
He's the best history teacher ever , I hate history but he knows what he's teaching and he goes over things very interesting , no quiz not test He's amazing all I can say .
hes the best
Professor Casserly is an awesome history professor. I took is HIST 250 previously and he was super knowledgeable about his subject. I'm currently in his HIST 205 and it is just as good.
One of the best history professors, and professors in general, that i've had. His lectures are great and the discussions in class are always really interesting.
He is such an amazing professor. His class was filled with tons of information and his lectures are never boring. There are no tests/quizzes in this class, instead there are two papers that are very straightforward. He is always letting students know when he is free to meet regarding the class, and will give students great feedback whenever needed.
Best history teacher Ive ever had
At first, I expected this class to be boring and all lectures. While there is a fair share of lectures, Brian is an amazing teacher and intrigued me with every one of his lectures. There is a lot of reading to do and lots of papers and homework to write, but it is nothing too hard.
He is always available after class. He lectures everyday. Almost every assignment is an essay so get ready to write. Is a bit biased at times when grading.
Lectures are always engaging, and I have learned so much throughout this course.
Lecture everyday but particpation counts. 8 hw assignments (1 page double-spaced) and 8 in-class assignments (usually with a group and you just answer some questions).Lowest hw and class work gets dropped. 2 papers (100 and 200 points), one day for each paper in which coming to class is optional0he makes it extended office hours.
Brian Casserly is one of the best professors I have taken, period. His lectures are better than any TED talk out there, he engages the classroom by injecting life into history and going the extra mile to describe events and historical figures as if he knew them personally. If you enjoy history, like at all, then you'll be blown away by his classes!
he is super nice and a good prof. there are no tests but instead weekly 1 page papers and big papers instead of midterms and finals. ususally pretty easy but he grades kind of tough so you have to put in some effort. dont really do anything in the class but listen to his lectures and take notes. he assigns articles to read each night but i didnt.
Professor Casserly is a great professor. He lectures well and is very specific when lecturing. He does not as for much in class. If you listen and you put in effort, it is an easy A.
Casserly is hands down one of the best history professors at BC. He is lecture heavy but makes it super interesting and engaging. There are 6 HW writing assignments and 2 big papers. Make sure to show up and participate in class since that is part of your grade. Overall, put in the work and you'll get an A!
Professor Casserly is one of the best teachers i have ever had. His lectures were informative and entertaining and he was very clear on how to complete assignments correctly. He cares a lot about his students and wants them to succeed not just in his class but in college in general. I would heavily recommend his class if you like history
Dr. Casserly is an amazing teacher. I had him for history 147 (US History). His lectures are amazing and he gives participation points at the end of the quarter which boosts your grade up. There are 8 homework assignments (every week) and 2 papers (one for mid term and other for final), and he gives great feedback if you suck at writing like I do.
Mr Casserly is a intuitive professor and a great public speaker. I would take his classes again. A very solid instructor.
Brian Casserly is the best Professor I have had during my college career. He is very straightforward and clear on what he expects out of his students. He always makes times for his students to answer any questions. He also makes the assignments on Canvas very easy to understand. Definitely will be taking him again and cant recommend him enough!
Professor Casserly always provided lots of helpful feedback on assignments that I would be able to use for future assignments. He answered every question with an abundance of information and always made himself available for office hours. I really enjoyed his class and learned a ton!
Brian Casserly is the best professor at Bellevue College! He is organized, always prepared for class, well acknowledgeable of the subject he teaches. Participation needed every week a 1 page HW assignment based on the reading, 2 essays total (3-4 pages) as mid-term and final. Group discussions regularly to discuss readings. Books are necessary.
Dr. Casserly's lectures are amazing. He keeps everybody entertained with small jokes here and there. He knows exactly how many assignments and papers he is going to assign (8 homework assignments and 2 papers). He also grades based on how engaged you are and how often you come to class. He gives 3 free passes to not go to class without losing point
Dr. Casserly is the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are truly engaging and super informational. He has a super clear grading criteria and is always willing to give students advice. Every day I would look forward to this class because it is the perfect mix of information and humor. If you ever have the chance to take a class of his do it!
Casserly is a really nice guy. Available to meet with if needed, which I wish I did more. Lectures are really interesting and enjoyable. Weekly homework assignments based on assigned articles. HW isnt too bad but a little rough for me and I would consider myself to be an ok writer. The papers are worth a HUGE percent of your grade and kinda hard.
Lots of material to pore over in US foreign affairs, but Casserly is by far the best teacher Ive had yet at BC. That history class was phenomenal!
Great professor. I recommend him 100%. He makes you work for your grade and he gives out great lectures.
Lectures are interesting but explore events at surface level. Easy to do well & has office hours for help. Graded on weekly discussions, quizzes & 2 papers (pretty short). Not much analysis done in lectures (not much compare/contrast, continuity/change), doesn't connect time periods, but lectures are still interesting!
Prof. Casserly was hands down one of the best teachers I have had. His lectures were engaging, and his workload was very organized and at a good amount as well. We only had one quiz and discussion a week, plus two papers in all. The quizzes were simple to do as long as you listened to his lecture recordings. Really great teacher!
Definitely my favorite class experience at bc. This was my second class with Dr. Casserly (also took HIST250). He gives really good lectures, take good notes. He asks for a lot of reading, but I used quite a bit of discretion and got an A. Highly recommend Dr Casserly and these classes.
Brian is the best professor I've had at Bellevue. He has an astonishing learnedness and careful consideration for the subject of history. Just take his class, you will not regret it. Canadian accent (huge perk) and he consistently delivered the loudest and most thought-provoking lectures of my life. Teaches you career skills and work ethic also.
I withdrew from one of his classes in the past because I thought retaking it later would be easier. I was wrong. He gives decent feedback but he is not willing to work with you when it comes to improving your grade. I contacted him a few times regarding my grade in his class and he is not forgiving. Not a difficult class, just not a caring prof.
Very tough grader but if you utilize office hours and discuss your assignments with him you will get a guaranteed 100% on them. Class is organized, weekly quizzes and discussion questions and 2 papers.
I absolutely loved Dr. Brian and his US HIS III course. He is such a good teacher, he grades fairly and gives great feedback. He really inspires you to learn history. There's two papers each quarter, but you have plenty of time to do them. His weekly quizzes are easy if you pay attention on the homework and reading. I would 100% take him again.
Mandatory class, weekly quizzes and discussions which are very long. Two papers but he grades harshly.
Professor Casserly started off fine. Though the amount of work that is given is unrealistic. He gives 5, 30 minute videos a week that of course take longer because he doesnt give the slides. Along with lots of reading material. His discussions werent bad, though the quizzes were unrealistic a 10 question quiz was out of 30.
Casserly was a decent professor, although I didn't really get to know him. He is very lecture oriented but some of them were actually very interesting. There are usually weekly assignments due on Sundays which gives you plenty of time. I will say for discussions and papers he is a confusing grader; I lost small but frequent points for minor things.
Excellent professor - tough but fair and very helpful. Don't expect his classes to be like High School - he treats you like a college student and expects you to work hard. I feel much more prepared for classes at a 4 year college after taking his class. Knows his stuff and would definitely take again.
Prof Casserly was concise. Lots of reading/lectures/docs during the week & I had to catch up on the weekend. Very nitpicky about writing. Gave extra cred opportunities towards the end and was willing to meet outside of class on zoom (be ready for awkward silences tho). Semi-stressful class, esp. if you are an overachiever/perfectionist like me
I learned SO much in HIST 214! Dr. Casserly is the best professor I've had at BC & overall one of the best professors I've ever had. It was challenging- I easily spent 15-20 hours a week on this class. The lectures were very detailed and the class materials were engaging and memorable. SO glad I took this course!!
I had to take Northwest history as part of getting my teaching credentials. I expected the class to be really boring, but it was actually very interesting. Dr. C knows his stuff. He expects you to work hard but he's very helpful. I learned a lot and got a new appreciation of the place I've lived all my life.
Tough but fair grader. Class was more interesting than I expected. He was understanding when I missed some time due to being sick - worked with me to help me catch up. Willing to meet on Zoom to give feedback on assignments, papers, etc. Wish I could take his class in person and not online.
Grades strictly so read the criteria carefully. Understanding teacher, responds to emails and gives feedback when asked for. Information was laid out nicely, it was easy to access and understand.
You get assigned 3-5 lectures almost every week and a bunch of other small-medium-length articles. There are weekly quizzes and discussions which take a bit of time. If you procrastinate a lot, this class will be very difficult for you. There are two big papers, one in the middle of the quarter and one at the end. Be mindful of your time.
It's been a few years but I LOVED taking Dr. Casserly's classes. I took three of them when I was at BC and I could not recommend them more! The lectures are quite engaging, and the homework is pretty easy, especially if you enjoy history.
really good teacher, generous with extensions as long as they are reasonable, classes are really fun to be at.
Great class! It might be a bit stressful if you are not into history. Weekly discussion post (~800 words); 3 papers (~1200 words); Weekly quiz for the gradings. 95% cut off for an A, seems tough but indeed when you submit the assignments and papers on time, it won't be a big deal as professor grades your work loosely. Be prepared to read!
take the class trust
Great professor! Every week, there is a 750 word discussion post and one quiz. Lowest score at end of quarter gets dropped. There are 2 papers and a participation grade as well. Extra credit for lots of points is available near the end of the quarter. Take this class if you want an A.
I do running start and he was my first teacher, and he's the greatest professor. Each week there is a 750 discussions post and one quiz, but all of them is easy if you pay attention to the lectures/readings. One thing i like abt his class is that by the end of the quarter he drops your lowest scored discussion post and quiz. I recommend this class
Professor Casserly is super smart and will share his wisdom throughout the quarter. His lectures were informative and surprisingly interesting. You do a lot of readings, but staying on track is pretty easy as long as you do the readings. Weekly quizzes and discussions, but everything are covered throughout the twice-a-week lectures and readings.
If you are thinking about taking this class- do it you won't regret it. Professor Casserly is an amazing professor who knows so much about the subject. The work load is about 4-30 minutes recorded lectures, and a multiple choice quiz and 500 word discussion post due on Sunday, along with two additional papers. He is a pretty easy grader.
Lrian Lasserly bro gave me an A- in the class on the last day and just dipped
Dr. Casserly is an amazing professor! His lectures were interesting to listen to, and you can tell how much he cares about history. Graded on weekly discussion posts (500-word post and 250-word reply), a 10-question quiz (pretty easy if you pay attention to lectures), and 2 papers (he's a fairly easy grader). Offers extra credit assignments.
Prof Casserly is super understanding and clear with his information. It's somewhat easy to get full credit on module assignments as long as you follow the criteria. He makes everything easy to understand and almost anyone can succeed in his class.
Good class and professor overall. Not too much work but still enough to learn the content. Easy to reach him outside of class and was pretty understanding. Really knowledgeable too.
Great online course. We had a lecture video and some readings/primary sources to review each week along with a textbook segment. Simple discussion post (500 words) and 10q quiz each week. Quiz was timed at 15 minutes but simple if you watched the lecture. Very reasonable workload and grading, a great prof to take if you need a history credit.
This professor was amazing. On the first day of class he seemed like he was gonna be another strict professor but he definitely was not. He answered questions perfectly and he really knew what he was talking about. He was extremely confident in his lectures and he encouraged proper historical thinking skills. Definitely take this professor.
I've taken HIST250 and HIST205 from professor Casserly, and very much enjoyed both classes. He's very knowledgeable and passionate about the material, and covers topics in a matter-of-fact way that makes them very understandable. He assigns quite a bit of (quality) reading, but you can skim it if you understand the material. Highly recommended!
I hated history before I took this class. Dr. Casserly was super enthusiastic about history and very clear about what you need to do to succeed. Lectures were mandatory, although I looked forward to attending every one because of how interesting he managed to make things. Definitely worth taking if you love history, or if you want to love history.
This class had essay assignments every week and quizzes. I want to say this class is tough and need a lot of extra time outside of class. Quizzes were easy if you listened to the lecture carefully. The lectures were awesome. He was very passionate about teaching history. Also at last he drops the lowest grade on quizzes and assignments.
Really enjoyed the class with Prof. Casserly. Classwork was pretty easy for the most part, just make sure you pay attention and take good notes. Midterm and Final were challenging but doable. You are given six different essay prompts to study and gather evidence and he chooses two of the options as the prompt for the test
Every class is an easily digestible lecture. Homework often includes reading historical sources that will be discussed the following class, so it's a good idea to actually read them. Basically had no trouble understanding anything in class, and he responded to emails in a timely manner for any questions I had
Professor Casserly is absolutely amazing! Before taking his class I was not fond of history whatsoever, but his teaching style and everything about his class just made me love it! I encourage reading everything he sends out as it will help during class discussion, and if you're someone who has a quotebook, know he will have many iconic quotes!
Very passionate teacher that knows what he is talking about. Super reasonable grader, offers extra credit on exams, and communicates expectations clearly. Would take another class by him just to take another class by him.
Brian Casserly is a great teacher. I learned a lot in his class. His class is a well-oiled machine. He has "themes" that he focuses on that make understanding change over time easier Eg. "workers' rights", and "status of women". He has readings assigned 3- 4 times a week. They took me 30 minutes a day.
Great professor and very passionate about the subject he teaches. History lectures were fun and he is very nice. HW is usually a weekly quiz and a written response. MIDTERM AND FINAL is 6 essay prompts, study them, you can have a note card and then he will choose 2 and you can pick which one to write about. A bit of reading but its manageable.
Very lecture and textbook heavy. Always open to questions both in and out of class. Balanced the heavy subject of World War II well.
Professor Casserly makes the course quite manageable. The weekly assignments are straightforward, and he offers helpful extra credit opportunities. unstuckstudy proved a great study aid alongside the readings. Overall, an enjoyable and rewarding history class.
He's very helpful and creates an immersive environment in all his lectures. There are 2 main essays and a lot of classwork handouts, but overall very easy to follow if you stay on top of your work. Grades a bit tough on essays but as long as you put in enough effort, it's an easy A.
Difficult grader, not an entry level professor. Do not take if its your first year.
So chill and funny, genuinely cares about his subject matter. As long as you are a good writer you'll sail through this class.
Brian Casserly is a basic teacher and is pretty good lections
He is a really good professor, Homework is just a 500 word paper and a short quiz each week. Pretty easy class overall but If you go to class every day, its a lot of lectures, but they usually are somewhat interesting.
great professor. homework was a quiz and 500 word paper, and he would let you choose between 3 prompts. mid term and final are very easy, just picking a prompt and writing what you know. Offers extra credit and doesn't mark off attendance for illnesses and encourages you to stay home if you're sick (lucky if you are taking winter quarter)
Hes a very good person, gives awesome feedback. 2 tests, 8 quizzes and 7 homeworks (500 word papers). very knowledgeable, been teaching for 17 years. However, I don't recommend taking HIST146 with him. the workload is just not worth it for a history class. I've easily spent more than 50 hours on just homework for this class while should've been 10.
Professor Casserly responds extremely quickly and is accommodating based on your situation. This class is participation heavy, meaning you have to contribute to the discussion to earn points. Overall, I loved his lectures since they were engaging and easy to digest. Finals consist of a timed essay with a written notecard.
Professor Casserly is such a caring professor. He responds to emails very quickly and makes sure that you understand the material of the course. There are 2 tests, but you get a notecard for reference. You need to participate in this class, but he makes that easy as well. He is a very funny professor as well. HIGHLY RECCOMEND!
The professor has a clear and engaging teaching style, making complex concepts easy to understand. They explain material step by step, often using examples to help students with key ideas. They are approachable and willing to provide extra explanations when needed, and their lectures are well-organized and easy to follow.
long lectures but not in a bad way necessarily. one or two assignments per week, midterm was just a short essay (like a timed write almost) and a pretty chill class.
Really reasonable, I liked the class and how he was organizing it
Great class. I keep getting flagged trying to write a comment, but you should take this class.
