Was a good professor, although expectations for the course were not clear. He is a boring lecturer, and he graded the exams himself, so grading was very subjective. He knows his stuff, but could definitely improve as an instructor.
He was a good professor that was very approachable. Class covers a lot, but if you keep up, you will find it is very interesting.
I was really disappointed by this class. Lectures were boring, poorly organized, unclear, and often contained errors. Coggins seemed uninterested in teaching the class, and it was clearly his lowest priority. We got back 2/12 homeworks, and will not be getting our essays (an obnoxious and highly weighted assignment). Don't take this class with him!
Coggins normally teaches this class in the summer. The paper he assigned was an interesting idea but there's just too many students in the class for him to grade it timely. The lectures are really what you would expect for a science class. I thought he did a fine job in them and drove home important ideas.
SUCH a scrub. his lectures are full of mistakes, and he gets confused figuring them out when he gets called out and ends up having to send out emails w/ corrections. annoying paper assignment w/ barely any guidance that isn't handed back. TWO problem sets on test weeks (one is "optional" but is tested over and isn't put up until really late).
This class was not that bad. He's a thorough lecturer and easy to understand. His lectures occasisionally have errors, but he tries to fix them either during class or through email, unlike professors that just keep teaching you the wrong thing. The class needs adjusting for large size, but is otherwise very interesting. I enjoyed it a lot!
EX. EMP. LA. RY. spent over a decade at duke, including as an undegrad.
His lectures are good, but that doesn't translate to his tests. They're very nitpicky and unfortunately focuses a lot on minor details that he glossed over in class. This wasn't the worst class I've taken, but it's definitely one of the more annoying ones I've taken. Would only recommend him as a last resort.
my advice is to review the stuff after each lecture; if you keep up, then you'll find he's actually good at what he does; if you don't keep up, it's easy to find yourself lost in class. tests were very similar to practice, though the writing assignment is bs.
He's an awesome professor; he is very clear during lectures, interesting, and if he makes a mistake, he will be sure to correct it and clarify. You can tell that he really enjoys talking about the subject and he knows his stuff well. The paper is a little annoying, but admittedly not a bad exercise -- the guidelines were clear. I recommend.
Not a very nice guy. Tests were easy, but he expects specific answers, and will not go against TA grading (even if he admits they are incorrect) for the sake of "consistency". Regrade requests are ridiculous and it's nearly impossible to get points back. He seems to get confused easily during lectures. Doesn't really care about students.
This is the most subjectively graded science class you will ever take. TA's will mark you off on tests if your answers aren't word for word what's on the key, even if what you say isn't wrong. TA's will also refuse regrade requests for no reason. Basically, the material is easy but the testing is WAY too specific and arbitrary, and so is the paper.
The material for this class was easy enough, but you practically have to read Dr. Coggins' mind to succeed on his tests! The regrade policy is absolutely ridiculous and highly unfavorable for students. Students are required to visit multiple TAs who can decide to grant permission to appeal to the professor (or not, in most cases). Avoid this class!
He does not know how to run a large class. Exams were straightforward, but the arbitrary TA grading screws you. The figures he draws during lecture are convoluted and confusing, just look at the ones in the book. I recommend taking this over the summer when he is less overwhelmed, or senior fall so it doesn't go on your AMCAS.
Dr. Coggins is not a bad lecturer. He gets the job done and is helpful during office hours. The tests are very fair and are based on his lectures. However, the paper assignemnt doesn't help develop our writing skills at all. Huge waste of time for the students and the TAs. I strongly recommend taking biochem over the summer.
Prof. Coggins is a phenomenal lecturer. His lectures are well-paced and clear, he is very well-spoken (I have literally never heard him use a filler word), and there is occasional use of humortrivia. The class is extremely difficult, with a huge amount of material thrown at you, but the exams are fair and all the topics are integrated flawlessly.
Pay close attention to his lectures and just know biochem, only way to do well.
Go to class - all materials from notes in class, don't open textbook. Coggins gets a lot of hate on yikyak, but he grew on me. Clear lecturer, not the most interesting subject, but not terrible. Very fair exams, writing assignment is no longer required. exams are multiple choice and not cumulative. likes beer - will test on in biochem context
This is underratingly one of the easier pre-med classes. Its a lot of memorization, but the material isn't terribly complex and the tests are pretty straightforward. No lab component and optional friday discussions also makes this class very nice
Lectures are super dry and boring, but I think that's probably because of the subject itself. You can tell he's passionate about it but just doesn't do a very good job about getting anyone else excited about it. Students don't really respect him, either. His tests are almost exclusively on his lecture so you need to attend class (Fridays optional)
Coggins is one of the best lecturers out there. Indeed, the subject matter is a little dry, but he does an excellent job of teaching it. You have to go to class to do well, but the tests are pretty fair in general. The class also gets more interesting towards the end, and Coggins does a great job tying together themes from the entire semester.
Coggins is an eloquent speaker and writer but extremely boring lectures. Course is generally very easy (haven't taken a premed class in a while as an engineer) and just proves my point that most premeds tend to complain for no reason. 100% memorization. No skill.
Clear lecturer w/ all test material taken from lectures (don't buy textbook). 3 exams (25/25/35% of grade) + weekly online/open-note quizzes (15% of grade) + weekly homework (ungraded). Many practice exams are posted, which are very helpful. Lots of content & it's very cumulative, so lectures can become hard to follow if you don't study regularly.
I enjoyed his class and the material was really interesting. The exams are fair, but you need to keep up with the material and make sure to attend lectures because his tests are based on them (no need for the textbook). Do the problem sets and the previous exams and you'll be ok.
Dr. Coggins is the man. I did badly on the first test, and he was willing to meet with me outside of class to help raise my grade. I eventually understood and really give him a lot of credit for his encouragement. That said, I did NOT like the grading format - the tests were worth 25% of the grade each and undroppable. Would take him again though!
Prof. Coggins is an extremely clear, albeit uninteresting, lecturer. Focus during his lectures and take notes, you will have excellent resource, which you need because exams (85% of grade) are entirely based on his lectures. Study thoroughly with the practice exams he gives, and you should do well. A bit of a victory lap class after orgo I/II.
Prof Coggins is knowledgeable & connects the material to real life, discussing medical implications of the info (which is great, since most of the students are premed). He makes it clear what you need to do to succeed and the tests are super straightforward. You need to memorize a lot but conceptually the class is not too hard. Highly recommend!!!
Coggins is a great professor! Solid lectures, although they can be a bit confusing at times. He is happy to clarify concepts after class and during office hours. Tests are challenging but fair and based on lectures and problem sets. Definitely would take again!
Sweet adorable caring man. he's a teddy bear. made biochem bearable... but it was still hard, because it was biochem. pretty easy to get away with a B or so. great problem sets. posts lecture slides. really eager to help out and loves his subject so much. great guy. would recommend.
Dr. Coggins is truly a great professor. He gives super clear and articulate lectures with easy to understand slides if you go to class. Textbook not necessary - all the material from lectures. Hard in that there is a ton of memorization. But he gives you lots of past exams that help studying immensely. Psets and recitation helpful, not required.
Coggins is a fair teacher. No textbook necessary, and his instructions are clear. If you pay attention to his lectures and do all his practice exams, you'll do well. Find the TA that works for you and let them help you better understand (I rec Steve).
I came into this class expecting it to be no work because other premeds said it was 'super easy'. It is easier than orgo/physics and you can do well by straight memorization, but don't slack off on the first test because unlike orgo, you can't replace the lowest test with the final. Make sure you put time in and don't underestimate the class
Dr. Coggin's passion for biochem makes his lectures clear and enjoyable. Lecture slides are very streamlined; I recommend recording his lectures for reference. Exams are straightforward, and Dr. Coggins posts all prior exams the week before for practice. While this is an "easier" premed class, be prepared to work hard -- lots of memorization.
Legendary man through and through. Took us on a chemical journey from day one. No textbook necessary, his lectures provide the information needed on the exam, so try to not miss class. There is a good chunk of this course that is memorization-heavy but Coggins presents it well. Would recommend
this man honestly just knows how to teach. he makes fantastic, direct powerpoints. his lectures are extremely well organized. he tells you exactly what he wants from you, in terms of what to memorize, what will be on tests. he provides tons of practice tests and practice problems. literally finally someone who wants me to do well
Very clear and straightforward lecturer. Tests are super fair, and he's so accessible outside of class. Lectures got a bit dry at times, but the material was interesting, especially the last third of the class.
This class was tough for me, but it's objectively an easy class. Go to lecture and don't cram. He doesn't use a textbook and his powerpoints by themselves are kinda vague, so go to lecture. He makes the tests very reasonable if you put in the work for it. Overall a very fair and intelligent teacher and course.
Professor Coggins gives very informative lectures, but he tends to be monotone which makes it easy to tune out during lectures. He provides plenty of practice test materials for exams and his tests are definitely fair; the TAs are also flexible with their grading. Coggins overall is a great biochemistry teacher, and I learned a lot!
Excellent professor. His lectures are very clear (although if you don't attend lecture, the powerpoints can be kinda confusing), he provides several practice exams to test your knowledge, and his exams are very fair. Course is structured for you to do well provided you put the work in.
Coggins is the mom to Baldwin's dad. (Gooden's the crazy uncle I guess) Great prof, very measured and easy-to-follow pace. Material is interesting and it's clear Coggins knows it inside and out. He cares about students and their performance, but won't make special exceptions or anything. Easy course if you don't push it all to the night before.
He has a magical way of lulling you to sleep with his voice. Explains things very well and slowly but he cares about teaching and the material. It's not hard if you prepare smart for the 3 exams. The "final" is a 3rd midterm. Just do a whole bunch of his practice problems and the past exams and you should get an A. Lots of memorizing though.
Dr. Coggins is an excellent professor. He is a clear lecturer and extremely intelligent. All of the material he covers is so relevant. He is always available to answer questions outside of class, which is very helpful. He wants us all to do well not only in his course, but in our future careers. Overall, course is challenging but intriguing!
His lecture slides are not very detailed so you have to go to lecture. I recommend recording his lectures since he talks kind of fast. He definitely knows his stuff and is a great teacher. But he is kind of condescending esp. when you ask questions outside of lecture. I remember him telling me once: "oh, you just don't get it." Interesting class!
You can tell that he's extremely passionate & knowledgeable on the subject. Tests are clear & straightforward. Weekly graded quizzes on Sakai. Definitely rewatch the recorded lectures because he goes through the material fairly quickly but if you put in the time and effort, you will do well. Lecture is needed to understand his ppt slides.
Exceptionally rushed, and constantly says, "Rewatch the lectures if you didn't understand something." This essentially gives him an excuse to be a poor professor, pushing the burden on us to catch the ridiculous nuances he likes to test. The tests and quizzes are worded so poorly that it's not even ambiguous; it's clearly asking for something else.
This was my first biochemistry class and Dr. Coggins made me discover a passion for biochemistry that I didn't know I had. His lectures tie in a lot of concepts to everyday life and I found it very engaging and interesting. Tests count for most of the grade in the class but the content is presented clearly so if you study, you will do well.
Goes super in-depth into the material to make sure students are grasping it. Easy to tune out when he goes on tangents and frequently rushes through the important parts of lectures, but otherwise good at teaching. Comes off as condescending quite often. Tests are writing-heavy. The last part of the course is definitely interesting, though.
He is the best Biochem 301 professor. There's just no competition at all. .
Dr. Coggins' lectures are very dense but very informative. He explains clearly, and his class prepared me extremely well for the MCAT. But he doesn't respond well to questions and often makes you feel stupid for asking them.
Took this over summer session I which is extremely fast paced but Dr. Coggins still made sure students were able to understand everything clearly. Go to lecture or you won't understand his PPTs. Test heavy, 3 exams worth 85% of grade, but very easy if you go to lecture and understand the concepts. Overall, very enjoyable class.
Dr. Coggins knew his stuff - he always knew the most recent research findings surrounding a particular topic. He was also a great lecturer; he explained things very thoroughly. His slides are a bit annoying because on their own they don't help too much, but overall a great professor.
One of the best professors at Duke. Coggins really cares about his students learning and is willing to help outside of class and he made the material easy to understand. Definitely take biochemistry with him!!
Test heavy class, but Dr. Coggins cares about his students and is open to questions and provides good feedback. The material is challenging at times, but if you have to take Biochem at Duke, definitely take it with Coggins.
Love Dr Coggins. He is a really smart guy and connects so many of the lectures to outside applications. He's pretty funny and can sometimes rush lectures when there is a time stamp he wants to reach. He always answers emails and I recommend going to SAGE for this class. Also, generally an interesting class.
I was dreading this course because I am trash at chemistry, but he makes biochemistry into an engaging class where everything clicks together. The end of the course is especially interesting because he makes it about the human body and diseases.
I was dreading biochemistry, but Coggins has perfected the right way to teach this course. He'll mention current research and medical applications concerning a specific topic, and you learn a lot about disease, beer brewing, nutrition, etc. You'll definitely gain a newfound appreciation for all the little cells and proteins that make up your body.
As someone really interested in biochemistry, this course was a letdown. It felt more like an MCAT prep course than a biochemistry course. We covered mainly physiology and metabolism while glazing over key concepts like protein synthesis. That being said, Coggins does really care about students and has amazing resources to help students learn.
Nice guy, talks too much about the MCAT, doesn't realize there may be students taking biochem that won't become doctors in the future. Tests are easy if you regurgitate what he says in lecture, so take good notes.
Dr. Coggins makes sure you actually understand what you're learning so you leave with a good foundation and not just a memorized/forgotten set of pathways. Need to make significant effort to understand thermo, mechanisms, regulation but he explains concepts well and if you go to lecture/SAGE and do the psets the class is honestly not super hard.
Best lecturer I've ever had. Makes biochem as easy to understand as it can be. Super nice guy and genuinely knows everything about this subject... you can tell he's been teaching this class for forever because the organization is perfect.
He is excellent at teaching and is clearly passionate about biochem. The content itself is very interesting but taught in a well thought out and intentional way. He does speak slowly and record lectures, so you could skip class and watch at 2x speed on your own if you keep up with recordings. Love the ties to current research and events
Dr. Coggins does an amazing job at catering this class to premeds and ties in many medical applications of the material into his lectures and exams. He likes to throw some obscure questions on each exam, so make sure you review random and fun (almost tangent) topics that he talks about in class, as it will probably show up on an exam.
This class is pretty much a second weed-out class for premeds but I wouldn't say it's as bad as orgo in terms of difficulty. Coggins teaches it pretty well so as long as you pay attention in lectures and use good study strategies, you'll do fine.
Dr. Coggins' class is easy, but his grading criteria are, beyond doubt, the worst I've ever seen. There is a lack of words for how terrible he is as a prof/person. He tailors the class for people who have the time to join SAGE, as he can't host OH. After taking every premed/eng class at Duke I know he is the worst prof to ever step foot on campus!!
As a chem mjr, he made me lose all the love I had for chem. He is disorganized, his exams are not clear, the weekly quizzes are nonsensical, and he is condescending. I aced every single assignment, exams 1 and 2, and somehow ended with a B because he takes the answer key and twists it against you. He is THE WORST prof @ Duke. He should retire asap.
Awful instructor. As someone who got an A, I must admit it was a lot of useless work. Dr. Coggins says that this class prepares for the MCAT. WRONG! 50% of this class never appears and he never mention stuff that appears (what about teaching us what's anomeric carbons). He says some steps are trivial and never explains them, proceeds to test them.
I would rather take the whole of the MCAT twice in one sitting than look at Coggins again. This says something.
Really really well-organized class, super interesting content, and clearly passionate about biochemistry. Make sure you truly understand the material and pathways, and keep up with the content. Dr. Coggins is the best premed prof I've had at Duke. His lectures are very clear and the exams are fair.
A lot of work but you will definitely have some applicable and clinical takeaways, which I found interesting (also mcat content). Sign up for Sage (facilitators are amazing)!! Use the heck out of Ed discussion. Lots of practice is a must (psets and practice tests), bc he wants u to answer things a very specific way sometimes.
Studying his lectures and material will get you a good grade. Practice exams are the best study material. Unfortunately, a lot of his questions are very vague while he asks for a specific answer. This would be fine, but tests are 25% of the grade making one big mess up detrimental to your grade.
He is a terrible professor; he shows no leniency in his grading and is very particular about the terms you use when answering questions on the exam. He doesn't provide office hours, so the best way to prepare for exams is to do the practice exams and focus on how he answers the questions. I would not wish this class on my worst enemy
impatient when we ask questions after lecture and tells us to rewatch the lecture or says he doesnt know how to answer our question. rude and makes students feel discouraged. no office hours either. he is longwinded, disorganized, confusing. his lectures are boring i always fell asleep. tests are tricky. clearly no passion for teaching. worst ever
Dr. Coggins teaches biochemistry well in the most objective sense. While the lectures themselves could've been more interesting, everything was very fair. The tests are formatted with some open-ended questions which require you to demonstrate a strong understanding of the content. He gave out some extra credit opportunities which were cool.
Dr. Coggins teaches you all the biochem information you need to know and the class is very informational & tests are fair, but the class is taught in a boring manner & there is lots of content to memorize. Try your best to stay on top of the material.
Coggins is a straightforward lecturer, but this class is a lot of memorization. Go to every lecture and annotate slides by copying down everything he says. Tests are fair, he won't ask a question on something he hasn't taught. But, he can be petty and will test on lectures that were the least attended. Extra credit gives a good boost to your grade.
While the semester hasn't finished yet, I wanted to say that Coggins has been an awesome professor. He's a chill dude, willing to answer questions before/after classes, and does a great job of explaining things in lecture. His slides are great, he gives Xtra Cred opportunities, and his tests are quite fair. he makes a difficult subject fun to learn
BRUH BEC did not teach us the material that is on his exams!! Very hard to learn when you are being taught material up until the week of the exam..
I would not listen to these other 5/5 reviews. He's recently changed up his course structure and its a lot worse now. He canceled our last extra credit project with barely notice because he 'didn't have time.' He's grouping the topics a bit differently, making the course worse as opposed to better, and doesn't even have office hours. Terrible prof.
What a careless prof... Did not stay true to his word about problem sets, exams, or anything really.
Does not care about his students and you can tell.
BRUH BEC did not teach us the material that is on his exams!! Very hard to learn when you are being taught material up until the week of the exams. it was so annoying.
Un-curved class can be difficult not impossible. Attendance is not mandatory but keep up with class and weekly quizzes or else you'll be overwhelmed quickly. Very stingy with extra credit. Provides lots of good resources--practice tests, Ed, problem sets, etc. Every detail from lecture matters. The heaviest memorization class I've taken
Lecture slides were updated so they were better than in previous years. Tests are graded pretty harshly and they look for things that aren't explicitly asked for in the question. But do regrade requests and he's pretty fair. Some extra credit opportunities although less than previous semesters. Do all the previous tests he gives and you'll be fine
Petty, unforgiving, bends the rubric against you, and will test on extremely low-yield material if a lot of people skipped the class. Exams are weighed very heavily, so a bad test day can make it exponentially harder to get a good grade. I stopped looking both ways when crossing my street on my way to lecture. Would not take again.
I wouldn't listen to the Coggins hate. He teaches you everything you need to know, no more and no less. The tests are very fair with predictable questions and lots of available practice. An A in an uncurved class can be difficult but he is very generous with extra credit. Opt into SAGE and go to lecture!
Coggins was solid. He gave up to 3.5% in EC added to your final course grade, which I think is very generous of him. His tests are straightforward, just a lot of memorization. Never went to lecture and he faithfully posts recordings so just watch those. Good prof!
Coggins is incredibly knowledgeable and gets you inspired, because he genuinely believes in the importance of biochem in our lives. Material was interesting, but lectures sometimes got dull (just 3x a week, repetitiveness). He is petty and tests on material he spent little time on, but explicitly mentions what he doesn't test. 1000 past exams help.
If you're in biochem you prob don't have a choice. last third of the class is the most interesting. Coggins is NOT a great lecturer + slides are v dense. Content for the second exam is A LOT of info. But, there's to 3.5 extra credit points added to your final grade! I struggled in orgo but did well in biochem bc of the million practice exams
If he cares so much about attendance that he's ok with sabotaging the entire class by giving exams that aren't representative of the material covered, then he should just make attendance a mandatory part of the grade. Not to mention he showed up late to the final and gave exams that were missing half the pages. Truly a miserable class.
Questionable dude, and lectures can be dense, but still a very interesting class. Extra credit is very generous and a 2-3% grade boost is easily possible. Very low workload outside of midterms. Its very doable to do well if you stay on top of things just study hard since theres tons of content and exams can be tough but are fair.
Mid and boring. class wasn't too hard, but pmo
