Overall, I really enjoyed his class. At times it was a little boring, but then again it could have just been the material we were studying. He is very clear and fair. As long as you work hard you will do well. I really recommend his class.
He is the nicest man... and his class is very fun! not much work to do at all but he discusses many interesting points dealing with modernism. if you like modern art..music.. then this class is the way to go... its an easy A.
Lots of music and art. He is so nice. Pretty easy, but I learned a lot too. He's a great teacher.
This man is REALLY nice; easy-going class, not a lot of demanding work. You can never be right or wrong in his class; papers are not bad; he likes art & music a lot. Sometimes there are down periods in class - just do a little of the work so you'll be able to talk (he likes it when you talk).
I didn't enjoy the first few weeks, but I think it's mainly because I don't enjoy art history and analyzing art. He's really nice, though. Intelligent and (at times) even funny. Read the texts so you can have something to talk about during class... otherwise everyone is just sitting there twiddling their thumbs. He likes it when you talk
Prof. Culver is obviously an intelligent person who knows his stuff but he addresses the class like he is lecturing a group of five year olds. He's a good guy and gives decent grades, but he teaches college students classic literature like he's teaching toddlers the alphabet. If you've ever had any of the material before his class will annoy you.
Culver is a very sweet man and a fair grader..the class was boring at times but probabaley bc i learned alot of it in high school. I recommend taking this class!
the most boring class ever, but pretty easy
The Topics class for Modern Culture: Modernism in America is a great class. Some of the books are actually fun to read. You have to hand in informal responses that are like 1-2 pgs and can be filled with b.s. If you raise your hand (you don't even have to say anything smart)...you'll get an A. VERY EASY
hes a good professor. he knows his stuff and has a great way in teaching it. some days may be boring, others fun. u really learn and get a true aspect in meaning of art and what ur learning. just has 2 papers and he gives u the final and midterm a class before, which is great cus u know what to write. hes a fair grader and i took him twice. def tak
This class was sooooooooo easy!!! You just raise your hands, say watever...anything...his questions themselves are a joke. the books are fun to read...and the responses are about 14 in all..and only 1-2 pgs. he showed us our final a week before we actually took it so we knew exactly wat was on the exam. Raise your hand, hand in ur responses = A!
this man is the biggest idiot i have ever met. he has no idea what he is talking about and he analyzes books the way most people did in middle school. if you want to be bored to tears and leave each class feeling more stupid, take him. AWFUL!!
His monotone lecture=a Great lullaby!
He is a nice and easy going guy. But unless your truly into the topic, his lectures are extremely boring. I find myself playing my phone or sudoku most of the classes. He is easy going and not much work is need for him. So ask yourself, if you want an easy grade and suffer his lectures, it's up to you.
Culver's class is great. He's a super nice guy, boring, but it can be interesting. Not hard if you read what he assigns, really easy midterm and final.
he is a really nice guy, and he'll help you out with whatever you need... but i felt like i was in kindergarten in this class. it was so boring and so easy that it almost wasn't worth it.
Great class. Great professor. Culver is extremely organized, a major plus. As long as you read and raise your hand a lot, he'll like you. Exams are not that difficult as long as you read.
Do the readings (and response papers), go to class and raise your hand once or twice and you have yourself a B+ or better. I actually loved his lectures as he really knows his material. My favorite GSP professor by far, wish I knew about him before my last semester.. Great reading list too, Godot and the Modern Art lectures were AWESOME!
Class is a complete waste of time, he repeats the same basic concepts over and over again, class after class. Lots of quoting from the textbook. Everything is said with a knowing smirk, as if we're privileged to have his great wisdom imparted upon us. Very smug. Doesn't want you to think for yourself, easy A if you just repeat what he says.
He's nice, but so BORING. It feels like you're in kindergarten. People raise their hands and say stupid stuff, and feel like geniuses because he makes you feel that way even if you say dumb stuff. You don't actually have to do the reading, but as long as you pretend you care, and write what he says, it's an easy A.
Culver is a great guy, great prof. Just like others have said, read the material, go to class, raise your hand. He will never say you're wrong and really takes your thoughts into consideration. He doesn't force his opinions on you, lets you think for yourself. Exams let you tell him what you've learned rather than what you don't know. Great class.
Lovely man, but a bit boring at times. You can tell he's passionate about what he teaches. As long as you do the responses (easy but annoying) and raise your hand once a week, you have yourself an A. The reading list starts out crappy but the last few books are amazing. Not a bad class at all. I recommend it!
Really nice guy and loves his subject. The class is very structured. The workload is not unreasonable. You will write two papers, and both the midterm and final are essays that you write in class (gives you the prompt ahead of time). He emphasizes discussion, so do the reading and speak up in class.
He is really nice and all that but he does not give out As to everybody. He actually is a pretty hard grader. A LOT of READING and CLASS PARTICIPATION is CRUCIAL. His tests are not too hard but he rarely gives out anything better than B+ and A-... Don't take if you want to get A for sure.
very smart professor. culver is all about class participation. make sure you do the reading and say something in class. he is a hard grader. there was 3 papers. 1 counted as a midterm. and the final is an inclass paper. dont expect an easy A.
His class is boring. He's not an easy grader.
Agreeing with everyone else, Culver is SUPER SWEET and enthusiastic about his class, but that enthusiasm couldn't compensate for the boring material. Go see him for papers if you want an A, and speak up in class, participation is big, and easy. Overall, nice teacher, boring (sometimes painfully boring) material.
What's great about Culver's class is his tireless enthusiasm about the generally boring subject matter. All you have to do regularly is look at his reading questions and participate (he loves it). He's also ALWAYS very willing to help and clarify. My one criticism is that sometimes it felt like he was talking down to us, which can be frustrating.
If you dislike learning about art or music: describing it, comparing it, and recognizing it. DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS. The majority of the class deals with art or music. Culver is quite passionate about the subject material and seemed to be pretty helpful. However, the class is not easy, and there is a ton of reading.
A great professor who explains everything crystal clear. Make sure to always do the response papers and read and you'll be guaranteed a pretty good grade. :)
BORING but easy. He greatly appreciates participation it since awkward silences happen after every Q and it helps boost your grade. there were 3 essays & 1 final exam. final was an in-class essay & he gave the Qs ahead of time. His essay Qs were always kinda confusing so go to him so u can figure out what he wants. sparknotes helps. got an A-
Prof. Culver's class was great. I learned a lot about what "modern" means. We listened to some very interesting music and read some fantastic literature. The art discussions were a tad broad, but I can see them being very rewarding for someone looking for a crash course in modern art (1700's-Today). Very easy class if you listen, speak, and write.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU HATE ART AND MUSIC!!! Boring class and whatever you learn during class is basically useless for the final. He does assign the one essay Final exam before the exam but it is extremely subjective. The essay questions are very vague and subjective. I chose his class because he was apparently easy but it regret it.
I liked Culver's class at the time, but now I especially appreciate it after having taken II and III. Culver is obviously interested in his topic, never thinks a question/ answer is stupid, and is overall very nice. I found his class very clear so I never went, but he definitely seemed as if he would be more than happy to help someone outside class
Extremely solid guy, really picks up on the little things in the curriculum that make you laugh. His jokes will help you remember all you need. No midterm exam just a paper. Most of the time you don't even need to do the readings he rehearses it in class on his own. Very kind-hearted dude, doesn't call anyone out. "Doesn't like surprises".
Culver is a genuinely nice guy who is incredibly interested in the subject. Reading isn't required as it's never brought up in detail. Four papers and no exams. Class participation is really big, but just 1 comment each class keeps him satisfied. Easy A if you see him about papers beforehand. Take him!!
Culver is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's extremely interesting to listen to (and I didn't like art at all before his class). Always willing to help, not a hard grader if you just follow his structure. Participate in class and he'll love you.
Really fun class. Interesting course material. Focuses on art & music. Loved the way he linked the 2. Very easy. Only complaint is that his interpretation of material is all that matters. He will listen to your opinion but ultimately, he is right. Go with it and you'll do well. No tests, just essays.
Tells you exactly what he wants from you. Really cares about you doing well. Go see him with drafts of your papers before they're due and participate a lot and you'll do well. Can be a little boring at times, but that's the nature of the material. Does a great job of making it interesting. Highly recommend him for cultural courses!
NOT AN EASY A. People obviously do not know the definition of an EASY A. Take Salemi if you want an easy A. VERY focused on music, sings in class, gets very boring. You tell him what you think but ultimately his opinion is more valid and basically tells you that there is no wrong answer but then acts like you say the dumbest things.
Do not be fooled. This guy is no easy A. He has 3 essays and one final. He basically won't give you an A like ever. And his instructions are confusing and unclear. I worked for hours on the last essay and got a B. He tries to be so helpful, but he only makes things more confusing. Be warned
I took this class because of all the previous "easy A" comments, but I don't know if he had a change of heart or what. He is INSANELY strict with attendance, even when I was 2 minutes late ONCE he said that it would affect my grade. His papers are also incredibly long, and gives very vague prompts so you don't know what he wants. Would not take.
Culvz is the man. Actually love him and his green sweater so much. Has such an amazing voice, should try out for American Idol. Not hard, sit in front, participate, and he might call you Satan but gotta love him.
His class is boringly easy. He talks to his students like they are 5 years old and expects you to finish every single dumb sentence he says, but nobody ever feels like it because the questions aren't even real questions. And he'll ask the same questions and say the same obvious things over and over again. Easy class, boring if you actually care
Definitely a knowledgeable teacher. He assigns basically all essays--2 open-ended ones and 2 "exam"-type essays. He is very clear on what he wants in the prompt and is looking to see that you are responding to what he is trying to teach you. His jokes might be lame, but I thought they were hilarious! Office hours don't hurt!
Professor Culver is a great teacher. His classes were interesting and engaging . The love he had for the subject he teaches is infectious and makes you love the class that much more. Participate a lot (which is easy to do his questions are there on a silver platter) and you will get an A.
Really just an awful class. Horribly boring and the man is pretty annoying. Talks to us as if we are children. It's easy to participate, but the essay grading, unlike stated in the previous comments is much worse. Don't trust his grading; I went in spoke with him once about a grade, and turns out he missed an entire paragraph.
He's alright. He's enthusiastic about his lectures, but you don't have to try hard in this class. No one does the reading or questions he assigns, since he tells you everything during class. Essays are a bit harder, but if you do the bare minimum of an essay's requirements, you'll get a good grade.
If you want an easy class this is it. You have to show up but participating is easy. No tests expect final with you get the prompt for before hand. Three essays that are pretty easy. Didn't read a single book in two semesters i took CF I and II and i got an A- so its a pretty good class. I actually learned a lot in this class.
Literally the most demeaning, horrible teacher I have ever had. Would give back papers with low grades with no apparent reason. If you don't agree, with him, you're wrong. STAY AWAY!
Sweet but boring. Culver looks like santa claus in a grey blazer, talking to students like they are his elves. Although he is passionate about the topics discussed, his classes aren't really engaging or specifically interesting. Grades are a mystery as there is no clear grading criteria. Just take him if there is no better option.
He's so nice! Will make sure you thoroughly understand the work and will make occasional jokes that lighten things up. He lets you know two to three weeks advance about a paper and will try his best to help you. Great guy!
Professor Culver is really nice, but boring. Write all your essays couple days before the assignments and bring to his office hours - he will correct everything and you will get an easy A. Take home midterm and essay for the final.
Culver is very enthusiastic and passionate about what he teaches. He has a good sense of humor which adds a lot of color to otherwise boring course material. His assignments are pretty run of the mill, a couple of essays and a final exam, to which he grades without bias. He makes it very clear what you need to do, I will be taking him again soon.
He's super boring and seems like the easiest A ever, yet he might unpleasantly surprise you at the end of the semester with the grade he gives you. In the beginning, it wasn't that bad, but through the course of the semester, the quality of his lecturing was deteriorating. To be fair, his essays are actually extremely easy.
Prof Culver is very knowledgable on the subject and his discussion concerning art was interesting, opportunity to learn a lot. He tries to explain everything very carefully and likes to make sure you understand everything. I think great for people whose first language isn't english (like me). The class isn't really hard and you learn A LOT!
One of the best teachers hands down, he really tries to be mindful of people with different viewpoints and doesn't just support one. You should definitely take, he gives out the final before and other than that it's mainly 3 essays and they're very interesting to write about and easy to get done in the time he gives to work on them.
He's very nice and helpful, actually makes me interested in works that I wouldn't understand if I read it by myself. He tries to make sure you understand what's going on in his class.
Prof Culver has been one of my favorite teachers during my time at NYU. He is extremely passionate about his class and is also very organized. Attendance is not mandatory, yet if you do not go you can be a bit lost. He also has a great selection of readings!
Culver is the ideal prof. Not too many assignments, clear grading criteria/expectations, not too much HW or reading usually, gives plenty of time to do papers, and is highly accessible + gives great feedback. He's super nice, funny, passionate, and encouraging. He clearly knows his stuff but allows students to give their own opinions
Prof Culver is the sweetest prof you'll meet at NYU I swear. Even in an online course he's so lovable, funny, and all around such a nice guy. Really clear on what he wants from essays, gives plenty of time to go over the assignment sheets, and is always willing to answer questions. Really great class environment
Professor Culver is super clear with what he wants from his class. Lectures are based of the his readings that he assigns or the text at hand. The things he wants you to get from this class, he will walk you through. With papers, which make up the majority of your grade, he has super clear guidelines of what the outline should look like.
Dr. Culver is great honestly. Love when he sings in class. His expectations are very clear and so are his readings. If you just pay attention in class and participate (participation questions are easy) you will do well. He is very passionate about the material and his lectures can be very entertaining.
Culver is one of the few LS professors who actually has a lecture planned with slides. His class is quite engaging. However, be warned he is not as easy as he seems from these reviews. His grading of papers is unpredictable, so try to go to office hours as much as u can
This class isn't too hard, but the class time is pretty mind-numbing. It's challenging to stay awake, but Dr.Culver tries to keep things engaging. He's a good choice to get your ACM requirement out of the way
Culver is very insightful and knowledgeable regarding the arts; His lectures are unparalleled. As long as you take notes in class and participate you'll be fine. He is a very tough grader regarding his essay's but thats why I like him. Additionally he'll answer any questions you have if you show up to his office hours.
Honestly if you don't do a single reading all semester you'll be just fine as long as you pay attention in lecture. He's always trying to draw connections to different time periods/genres so take notes on those ideas specifically and especially. Culver is AWESOME and actually a really fun guy to be around. Makes things interesting all the time!
Great attention to detail, lots of reading, but if you pay attention in class, you'll be fine. Both final and midterm are papers. Your thesis needs to be supported by lots of evidence and details. Be sure to go to his office hours, it is very helpful.
super nice and understanding. i always went to office hours and he was great. but in class he asks us the dumbest questions about the readings. but he makes it so easy to participate which is good. papers are quite long but not hard at all. write more than required! pay attention in class & TAKE NOTES! would def take again bc it was an easy class
He is super chill, his lectures are always fun. I can see that he loves what he teaches. You don't get a lot of work--just 3 essays and that is it.
he's funny sometimes and to his credit he makes lectures interesting, but he can be a bit much. also didn't respond to a lot of my emails which is annoying. grading scheme is 20% per essay (there are four, including the final which he gave us four days to complete) and participation is worth another 20% so definitely go to class and participate.
culver is not a professor you should take if you want an easy class, contrary to these other reviews. he gave us four essays and they all could make or break your grade, stressful especially because the last essay he gave us THREE days to write. he is not understanding and he can be quite ignorant to student circumstances.
pretty easy class since its just essay work. however, his grading can be a bit harsh. he is funny though but also slightly intimidating because he is somewhat strict about the contents of the essay
Attendance not mandatory but participation is huge part of your grade. Tries to keep energy up @8am but not a great lecturer/unfriendly person esp outside class, If he likes you (at random) you will be fine, if not, good luck. Essays graded harshly (no rubric, little to no guidelines) Genuinely an unpleasant professor, take someone else.
Lectures are pretty engaging, workwise there are only 4 essays which you get a reasonable amount of time to complete. He's a really nice guy and as long as you show up, pay attention, participate now and then, atleast skim over the class readings and understand the material being explained you'll be fine.
Four essays across the class... I got a B+ for the first paper, but once u start taking notes and using what he says in class in ur essays, it definitely becomes doable! Participation matters. Culver is always friendly and bright in class! What a wholesome guy
It's my first time rating. It was a fun class overall and he explains materials quite clear. BUT he's VERY RUDE outside the class and not understandable at all. VERY HARSH in essays grading, the reasons he gave are elusive and changing each time. No rubric in grading at all. His feedbacks are mostly negative, but not helpful for your work as well.
Despite asking the silliest questions on class, he graded papers very harshly by making deductions for super minor details that he has never clarified when assigning them. Very rude during office hours and replying emails. Maybe your grade heavily depends on whether he likes you.
While Culver was an okay professor, he does not have a clear grading criteria and grades harshly. He does not give any sample essay examples leading students to not know how they should write their papers. If he is your only option it is fine, but try to steer clear.
Amazing professor, i wish I could take Culver's class next term! he is so engaging and excited to teach arts and cultures! on top of being my favorite teacher this term, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of page numbers and quotes and leads the class discussion SO smoothly.
lowkey do not take him
Professor Culver is very knowledgable and you will learn a lot from taking his class. The class itself is interesting and a good combination of lecture and discussion. If you participate, pay attention, and use what he says in class for your four essays then you will do well. Go to office hours for help with the essay assignments.
Chill guy. His lectures are very engaging. Takes notes and you'll do well on the essays.
He expects us to do so much when he's just standing there in front of the classroom, swearing half of the time. I hated it. He's so boring, too. He swears so much, constantly using words that we don't really wanna hear. His assignments are so unclear, and the way he explains things is horrible. But he expects the best and eye-satisfying results. ㅗ
just don't. if u want a terrible person "teaching" you ya help yourself.
My fav LS prof. Just write down whatever he says in class and write them in your essay. Answer the questions that he posts beforehand and it's easy participation.
I have no idea what kind of right mind would give this professor a 5/5. He is a nightmare please just trust me. I trusted the rate my professor rating and took his class. Now in all honestly I never want to learn this subject every again. If you wana ignore this and take his class? Be my guest. Just don't come crying after, saying I was right.
if you got other teachers just take their class. dont waste your time here.
hes kinda racist
I mean, he's my favorite professor so far at nyu. His class is not that easy, needs you to give your own opinions. BUT he's always willing to help you, just as he reminds you to listen carefully to what he says, that's the hint. You'll get a lot as long as you participate in this class and think, he really made it interesting with his knowledge
Prof. Culver gives great lectures. You can learn a lot about arts and cultures stuff. He is encouraging for in class participation. Work on your essays.
He's passionate about the subject but can be condescending with how he teaches. Midterm/final essay prompts are convoluted and his grading criteria is a bit unclear, so make sure you understand. As long as you take notes in class you will have plenty of material for the papers.
Great Professor - TAKE HIM! He is nice and extremely knowledgeable. A little hard to reach via email but his course load is fairly manageable.
Overall seems to be a nice person but can give off icky vibes sometimes. if you are an active listener and participant during class you'll have no problem. class could get boring. he also makes you read stuff that he wrote himself.
