He is super nice and is always willing to help. He also lets you out early quite often
focuses a lot on class discussion, but he really wants his students to question and think critically. Fun class--very casual atmosphere and he doesen't talk down to you.
I had him last semester and he's really awesome. Class is fairly easy, but he really wants everyone to participate in discussion. The final paper kinda sucks, but the rest of the semester is fine
He is perhaps one of the best teachers I have ever seen in action. He makes you think, and wants everyone in class to participate in discussions. These days stand out. 1. Led the class outside to chat... just because. 2. Turned off the lights and put a candle on every desk inside... to read.
he is liek a precious young/aging punk. he is so cute and has such cute style! ooh and hes so intelligent and aware of social norms and gender norms.. and he totally is goofy and a werido and makes things fun.. and gets u thinking critically. PLUS hes so down and totally ur homeboy!
Awesome teacher (even tho he looks like a young punkish guy haha). Very fun classes. talks about ANYTHING, no matter how risque. He even cancels lab mid way through semester. He's kinda a hard grader on essays, but he's available to check your paper before hand. He made me like english class!
Prepare to do about 5 essays and 1 research paper. You read about 5 books, most of them are entertaining... like others said very helpful but you have to put the effort into getting your grade.. He is big in participation. Overall not an easy class but not to difficult. ATTENDENCE is a must
I don't like english, but enjoyed this class. I just didn't like all the reading that was needed.
This class is very entertaining. If you like English and critical thinking then this is the class for you. Don't hesitate to ask him questions, go to class, take notes, read the books (they really arent that bad), and TRY on the essays. PARTICIPATION is a big thing but come on thats not that bad... overall AWESOME teacher, I got great insight!
One of the best professors here at UMBC. Keeps everyone involved even though he is a hard grader on essays.
the stuff you do in this class is nothing like what you should learn in English 100. You have to read 6 books and an essay for each then a research paper on the 6 books... so if you dont read the books your screwed.. ALSO he takes ATTENDENCE and if you miss 3 you get a grade lowered.. and if you 5 YOU FAIL.. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM!!
Great teacher. He expects college students to do college work and is big on class participation. Best teacher I ever had.
wow class is pretty boring. you talk about the same stuff everyday. he grades essays pretty easy though and there are no tests!
Expect to think in this class, grades essays a bit hard. Psych majors will have an advantage during discussions. And he is an interesting character. i.e. "Is this class really just mental masturbation?" need I say more
No Comments
Class is pretty boring but you have to attend because he takes attendance. Tough grader on papers and class discussion is VERY important (10% of your grade). No homework except to read the books and no quizzes so you better be a good writer and active participater!
Loved his class. For English, you want him. He is a harderish grader, but he makes literature interesting. Once he turned off all the lights in the room, took out candles and we read by candlelight for a class! Sometimes he took us outside too.
Pretty hard grader, but very funny, he tries to make class interesting. You definitely want him for ENGL 100. Every other teacher I have heard people complain about
I love this guy/class! He's totally the best english teacher I have had yet! The class bring up interesting critical thinking, fascinating ideas and I would definetly suggest it to anyone taking english 100.
The best english teacher at UMBC! He is so interesting, makes the class fun and it never feels like ur in a boring old english class. I took the class as a junior so i've had many manyyy professors and he is def one of the best.
Everyday is an experience with this professor. He is all about promoting critical thought. Your grade is based off 6 papers, participation, and small quizes just to make sure you are reading. He is an average grader but a very interesting guy. I loved his class and it was fairly easy to get a good grade. Just read and work hard on the papers.
Less than 25% of class time is actually used to improve writing skills. This instructor basically gets paid to whinge about his political opinions in a required course using straw man arguments and endless rhetorical questions.
Very playful guy. Doesnt take the class seriously and grades papers unrealistically. I do not recommend him.
He is a very interesting guy, he talks about new ideas and encourages the student's new ideas. You have to read about 5-7books but they are very interesting also. However, he grades essay in a weird way. If he doesnt like your style, he will not give you a nice grade. But overall classes are interesting.
Great class! Brian will talk about anything and is by far the best teacher I have ever had!
talk alot in class and try to write what he wants to hear.
He was an ok teacher. There was more reading and writing than in most English classes (We had to read 7 novels and write a paper on each one). If you like reading and writing you should be fine.
Very interesting professor. You only have to write about 4 to 5 essays. But what I liked most about this professor is that he grades your essays primarily based on your ability to demonstrate critical thinking instead of minor mistakes such as grammar and word usage and whatnot. You do not have to be an eloquent writer to get a good grade.
By far my favorite teacher. He is so enthusiastic about his teaching and makes you want to come to class. Be sure to participate, he's really big on that. The novels are pretty interesting, they are not boring at all especially "The Handmaid's Tale." No tests, just papers and you can e-mail them to him ahead of time for his feedback.
LOVE LOVE LOVE him! The BEST prof i've EVER had. I wish he'd start teaching something besides eng100 so I can take him again. He's totally hot (<3), very intelligent and evokes critical thinking. 5 essays, 1 research paper, and participation is vital along with attendance, but with dunnigan you wont want to miss class but rather look forward to it.
Quite possibly one of the best professors I have ever had. Immensely interesting, wants to hear other (even contrary) opinions, and loves what he teaches. Extremely helpful (you can email him your papers ahead of time) and grades based on content (even if he personally disagrees). Funny, but he rekindled my love of philosophy. HIGHLY recommended.
Took the summer session. I looked forward to his class and did well but I wrote top-notch papers. The discussions were amusing and his grading was reasonable. Understanding person and nice person. You must attend class and do the required reading, though. I recommend him as your professor - you will enjoy his class if you have an open mind.
Tries to draw critical thinking from various students, and often does a fairly decent job. He often repeats the same questions in different words however, may just be us not being responsive though. His reading syallabus is demanding at first, but turns out it's not really held to (good thing). Probably 3rd best proff I ever had, love the class.
You could sum up everything Dunnigan teaches in one lecture. His class should be an easy A but it's a huge a waist of time.
Brian is easygoing and entertaining. he has great insight and energy to spare. his books are interesting. The teacher doesn't force his opinions on you, but rather lets you think about issues for yourself. He touches on everything from the relative morality of murder, to Malcolm X's change of heart. Very interesting class.
His teaching is ok. Expect to read a lot. Though he loves to mention how objective he is, this is not a constant truth. He can be insensitive. Things like racism or genocide he will qualify as wrong, but topics like sexual assault or subjugation of women get "all opinions welcome" or "there is no wrong answer". If you're sensitive to this avoid it.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Only class that I enjoyed attending. His grading system is straightfoward, he grades fairly. The lectures are hilarious and you can go offtangent like crazy and get full points. Definently enjoyed having this class and it is a REALLY EASY A!
AWESOME TEACHER!! Not as much reading required as everyone has been saying but defiantly manageable. Very interesting lectures and entertaining. Pushes you to critically think. Really cool guy.
Prof Dunnigan is byfar one of my favorite professors so far in my college career. i don't know what i got yet, as i am still in his class but he seriously makes you think. i learned so much from this class. i came into this class just wanting to get my english credit over with, but he is very interesting..he is pretty hard though on his grading
This teacher is AWESOME!! One of the best teachers I have ever had. He involved the super orgasm into lecture, thats how hilarious he is!!
He is an awesome teacher and really helpful. You just have to write a lot of essays and he makes you think critically. He is also REALLY hot which makes you pay attention to his class. I have sexual fantasies about this man.
he is SOOO Hott!!! and i can't help but pay attention in class and smile : )
Really loves teaching.
Take Dunnigan! He is a huge promoter of thinking critically for yourself. Now, unlike the others I didn't have "revelations" towards English (because he never focuses on grammar), but I always enjoyed going and learning something new. Attendance and Participation are MANDATORY. Overall, great class. And.. it doesn't hurt that he's good looking.
Very helpful if you're having trouble and kind hearted.
AWESOME. He is the best. Very helpful and discussions in class were very open and easy to get points. Overall great professor
Wonderful Teacher, you do one paper per book plus a research, and then like 2 or 3 like one page things. Class attendance is a must. If you participate are speak up in class everything will go great. Longest paper was research paper, 7 pages (nothing at all) Take him!
WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!
The information he taught was good and innovative. He doesn't keep grades posted. He lied and said that I didn't participate in class enough, although I was one of the many who volunteered to do everything. He isn't very reachable.
Dunnigan sets the standard for what professors AND teachers should aspire to be. Helpful, engaging, intelligent, are a few of the virtues he possesses toward teaching and will do just about everything in his power NOT to leave you in the dust. Neigh sayers of this popular professor should be silenced. His methods should be kindled not killed.
He's a rambler, but pretty interesting. Unfortunately, the class material itself is pretty boring, so he can only do so much to make it appealing. He normally picks "controversial" books and you write simple essays for them. Longest paper is 5-7 pages at the end of the semester.
He's a fun, easy-going professor. There were three books for my Spring 2011 semester, which were "V for Vendetta", "The Handmaid's Tale", and "Geek Love". There was a 500-750 word paper on each, and a 5-7 page paper at the end of the term. Easy stuff, cool guy.
best professor i have ever had IN MY LIFE. encourages critical thinking and is really interested in students success. TAKE THIS PROFFESSOR. not hard. just read the materials and participate in class.
One of the best professors I've ever had, and an interesting man. When you first see him, all your preconceived notions of what professors should be go out the window. He's a brilliant, and really gets you think critically. Also, he's easy on the eyes and just has this refreshing youthful charm about him. TAKE HIS CLASS!
He was an amazing professor. He was so helpful and nice. Never said anything negative and had the best personality. He made jokes all of the time, and was super easy to approach. He would even edit your paper before it was due, which I highly recommend. Not too hard on the eyes either!!
I have always loved english so I looked forward to this. We only had a total of five papers all semester, and he piled the last three on at the very end. Rambles on about the most open ended things. Its hit or miss with him, and there is no way of knowing whether he will love or hate your papers. Completely inconsistent. Not profound imo.
This professor does not use blackboard and because the majority of the 5 assignments are piled at the end of the semester, you could have a high A and have it drop down to a C after the last day of school. His niceness does not make up for the frustration I've had with his grading system.
He is by far the best professor I have ever had in my life! He actually makes me interested in the topics he brings up. He also chooses very interesting books to read for class. You will love being in his class!
Extremely nice and approachable. The kind of person you want to grab a bite with. Very articulate, and gives mind blowing lectures. However, his grading system is terrible. I had 4 papers and a participation grade. He does not post grades on Bb, so nobody knows their grade thruout the semester. Still, I would recommend his class.
All around solid teacher. Very good experience :) Would recommend
He is nice and open minded. He says something he always ensures it does not offend anyone in class. However, his grading system is very poor. 10%is in participation which is ridiculous since one kid in my class never raised his hand and blurted out everything. The last essays had close due dates and disregarding students have other work and exams.
Interesting and thought provoking class. Classes almost always discussion and participation is required every class. 5 major essays are the majority of the final grade, fair grader and respects opinion as long as you explain your thoughts. great teacher and easy to talk to!
Must attend class since he does take attendance but class is not at all boring or dull. Doesn't expect over the top writing skills though you better read and take notes for the exams and papers since its concept questions and no secondary paper sourcing.
So I felt like the class was remedial since I had already taken a couple AP English classes, but I still think the class wasn't a waste of time. The material is interesting and I enjoyed hearing Mr.Dunnigan talk despite his constant disclaimers on things he said not being his actual opinion. He's rather dorky, but it's cute.
I would not recommend this professor. While Professor Dunnigan is a nice person, he is not a helpful teacher. He rarely responds to his emails, is unclear about assignments, and an inconsistent grader. Expect significantly more work than other professors. He is the only English 100 teacher that I know of that is giving a final exam as well.
Great personality! Horrible Professor! He gives almost no commentary on graded Essays besides "more devlopment". I emailed him several times with no reply. He is big on participation with unreasonable expectations. He talks for 80% on the class but wants every single student to participate ever class period. Pre-Medders stay away. Not worth the B.
He's a good person, but grades really harshly. All the classes involve lengthy discussions on very detailed portions of books, but tests cover a wide range of poems and topics that weren't discussed. Little feedback, doesn't post grades. Not worth taking Eng 210 with this guy
Buy the books. Go to every class. Exams are based on class discussions and imp. details in books. Not hard if you pay attention. PARTICIPATE! Write 3-4 essays. Give yourself at least 2-3 days to write, edit and re-write. You can also email your drafts for him to edit. He is a fair grader. Doesn't rush class. Pretty laid-back. Do not slack off.
Would not recommend this professor. Arbitrary grader and didn't update grades until the last day. Plenty of easier teachers you could enroll with.
Best professor I ever had. This is the only class I actually looked forward to attending just because the guy is hilarious and class discussions are fun. The work is easy, all the papers were under 10 pages (usually 7 pages max) and the books he chooses are SO INTERESTING, they're really easy to write papers about. I wish I could have him again.
He's a hilarious guy and chooses good books to read. Was very helpful with essay feedback if you go to his office hours. Fun guy to talk too.
She has a particular writing style and she expects everyone to write the same. What she expects is not made clear and you're left confused! I really want to like her, she seems to be really nice. But, I CAN NOT!
Great professor. Interesting class. Doing the reading and put effort into your work, easy A
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. His lectures makes you question your current view on religion, government while connecting literature. BIG on philosophy, very chill, open minded, you will NOT REGRET taking this class Frankenstein, V for Vendetta 3 (500-750 word) papers, 2 tests, 3-4 in class assignments AttendanceParticipation mandatory if you want an A
Attendance is definitely necessary, if you miss more than 4 classes, you won't pass. There's no leniency for that, excused or not, so go to class! I found his sense of humor hilarious and he's a very nice teacher!
He grades the first paper easy then as he goes on he grades papers harder. He always offers to read rough drafts and gives really good feedback on them. He's a good teacher, but he takes forever to give you back your workpapers.
Dunnigan is a great professor and his lectures are interesting, He is one of the tougher graders as far as English 100 goes, but then again its English 100.
I don't like his grading skills. He doesn't use blackboard and sometimes he loses his students papers. He never gave me a clear calculation of my grade in his class but was very arbitrary when grading . He's a very chilled guy but he needs to work on his grading. and fix his blackboard use. Also, he is a very disorganized man
I took him for a second time for ENG 392 and he was a great teacher to have yet again. If you need help, he's there and he's very approachable. His comments are entertaining to hear during the small group discussions and he has some pretty good insight. I definitely recommend him as one of the better professors at umbc.
Participation matters !!! To me , his lectures were pretty confusing , he likes to relate everything in book with history or philosophy or things you never heard of . However , that made the lectures interesting I guess . Have an advice for pre-med ppl , don't take it , choose something more practical ..
Gave good feedback on papers and interesting lectures. Also he's very easy on the eyes.
He's a great guy, pretty interesting too. I would definitely take ENG100 with him again. I took him over the summer if you focus you'll get an A
He's a pleasure to have as a professor. He's hilarious and is really amazing at making lectures entertaining. Overall an amazing person. But make sure you come to class and participate, or you won't pass.
My class experience was 3 hours of this man's random opinions of life. He's funny and cool but spends the majority of the class off topic. He counts participation and you cant miss more than two classes a semester. Don't take him.
Prof Dunnigan is a cool guy and his lectures were interesting. He is nice and funny when you talk to him personally. His grading is not too bad but it sometimes seems random. HOWEVER, he grades participation very strictly. Be SURE to speak 2-3 times PER class because the participation grade will make or break you.
He's pretty awesome. Felt lucky I got him for my first semester. As long as you speak up, even a little bit every class, your participation grade will be solid. Even if it's just word, at least he knows you're engaged with the class. The papers themselves aren't half bad either. Time consuming yeah, but it is college mate.
Prof D was pretty chill, class was philosophy heavy. Gives decent feedback on papers, but vaguely graded. You can find all books online. Keep up on reading b/c he gives pop quizzes. Exams are heavily focused on the supplm readings. First 1.5 month was a repeat of ENGL100-fell behind on the syllabus, so last 3 weeks of class was exam, essay, essay.
He is a very chill and laid back teacher but I don't understand how he grades his papers. I did more writing in this class then I did in my writing intensive class. Class participation is key. Pop quizzes here and there. Make sure you read bc he's gonna ask the most random questions. Keep up supplemental readings, thats the bulk of the exams.
So funny and straightforward and keeps the class entertained! pretty hip
Professor Dunnigan really knows what he is talking about. As an English major, I was very interested in the book discussions we had in class. Be sure to keep on top of the supplemental readings as they often make appearances on pop-quizzes and exams.
He was the best English professor in my educational career!! His socks were amazing and he made me enjoy coming to class every day at 9 am! But he aint that easy you have to read and talk in class! He's great though 10/10 would recommend
Great professor that cares and has interesting, engaging lectures. Assignments include minor or major essays, and the final is also an essay. Two main books - a novel and a graphic novel.
Professor Dunnigan is hands down the best professor at UMBC! This is not your standard English class. He creates interesting discussions and chooses interesting novels. I recommend him to all my friends and would recommend him to everyone. BEST PROFESSOR!
Somehow got an A in this course, despite taking it in the summer before college. Thought this class was going to be easy, but the fact he drops a letter grade for missing 2 lectures is quite biased. Very tough essay grader. Cool professor but difficult topics.
Prof Dunnigan is probably one of the best professors in the english department. Really engaging topics in class and a fair grader. However, one of the books required for class was used no more than 3 times and I paid 35$ for it. We weren't tested on it or anything it was just used for background knowledge.
He respects every each student. His lectures are mixed with humor and useful background information. He makes you feel comfortable and enjoyable in class. There is alot of papers and books to read but the books were very interesting and he thoroughly explains the rubric for papers and gives it way ahead of time for you to prepare.
He either grades really easy, or I'm an amazing writer. A paper I got a B on in HS that I added to he gave me an A+! There are a few papers, each dealing with a different theme/book, but he picks good, interesting books for the semester. Really enjoyed his class, but do PARTICIPATE!
Dunnigan is a very friendly, relaxed, informal guy. Class was fun a lot of the time, and we got out early often. The grades are paper based - we'd have one big paper due while three others were to be written and due at the same time. The required readings are what's discussed in class, and you get a participation grade based on how often you spoke.
He is an awesome professor hes relaxed and informal. As long as you read the supplemental readings the night before and the novel readings you can earn an A or a B (depending on how you write). His papers are easy and not long (about 2-3 pages). Take his class!
Mr. Dunnigan is so fantastic! He is a caring, witty teacher who respects his students and tries his best to have us engage. He is also very philosophical, has one thinking of the big questions in life. We do a lot of papers, so beware, but that's expected. You need to participate and come to class! Thank you, Prof. Dunnigan for a great semester!
I loved his class! His lectures were interesting and funny and we usually ended early. Really easy class as long as youre a good writer (I put an average amount of effort in and got an A). There were a few 3-4 page papers, a research paper, a final paper, and some other small writing assignments. The books he picks are good and easy to understand.
I took his summer class online and it was not great. His feedback was not clear and did not help towards improving my writing. All of the lectures discussed Philosophy and all assignments focused on writing.
Great professor! Really turned your usual English class into something much deeper. Has made great accommodations and easy adjustment for the online format. Really interesting books/ topics discussed.
Professor Dunnigan is very passionate about his Introduction to Literature course. We read Frankenstein, V for Vendetta, and a Raisin in the Sun. I think there were a couple essays, of which it is very important to write about what you actually think and interpret, not just copy some analysis from the internet. Expect to read and participate a lot.
Professor Dunnigan is a very nice and understanding professor. He chooses interesting books to read and beware of philosophical tangents during his lectures (I happen to enjoy them but I can see how some may not). He gives helpful feedback on every paper and always encourages students to attend his office hours or to email him if any qualms.
Hands down the best professor I've had so far. I was dreading this as an online zoom class at first but it was entertaining he made it interesting it wasn't boring. He is very nice and is willing to give early feedback if you email him. I never struggled in English so it was really easy for me. His standards are clear and not difficult.
I took Eng Composition hybrid class in the fall and I loved it. Professor Dunnigun engages the student by asking different questions that help with critical thinking. Just be prepared to participate, it matters. It is not so hard, you just have to contribute at least one reply for the discussion and you are good.
His lectures alone are worth taking him for your English credit. Really fun class and the readings were interesting.
Chill professor. Typical english class, start your essays early, read the assigned readings for your book, participate in class and you'll have a smooth ride.
I loved going to this class even though it was just an annoying GE credit. I found some of the essays fun to write and I got lucky with the books I got to read. PLEASE participate if you want this guy, he loves it and it gets awkward without anyone participating (you are also graded on it). Felt like a philosophy class.
His lectures are more philosophical and discussing books than teaching English. Participation is a grade. Try starting on papers early because you need to put a lot of thought into them. His feedback is good but slow because grading takes forever. He gives extensions for the papers if you need, but only for 1-2 days. Overall good prof and class.
I love Professor Dunnigan, he is supportive and caring, and the workload was manageable, with 4-5 essays as the basis for your grade. If you stay on top of the novels and essays and ask for feedback, you will ace it! You do have to talk in class which makes up 10% of your grade but other than that, I would retake this class with him if I could!
Super fun lectures and caring professor. However, he is a harsher grader. There are books to read and essays based on the books. About 4-5 I believe.
Honestly he's a chill teacher however the quizzes were so random... so it was difficult because it's not like you can study ahead of time because he asks the most random questions ever
Course is extremely back-loaded, with only 2 papers due in the first 14 weeks of the semester and 3 papers due in the last two weeks (two of which are 10 pages each). Doesn't give clear instructions for the papers, then takes lots of points off because we didn't write it exactly how he wanted. Feels more like a history class than an English class.
This class is simple as long as you read the books and participate in class. Professor Dunnigan was always flexible with deadlines with valid reasons (so long as you spoke to him before the due date about any circumstances), and always was willing to read our essays and give us feedback before we submitted.
Had Dunnigan for a 7 week summer ENGL 101 class online. Class was easy and he graded on criteria more than anything else. Follow the instructions and you will be fine. He was a slow grader and I often didn't get a rough draft grade back until well after I'd turned in a final draft. But, because he was not a harsh grader this wasn't a big deal.
I loved Dunnigan's class! No matter how bad my day was, this class was random in the best way. He values all opinions, whether "good" or "bad," and listens with genuine curiosity about different views. Grading is a bit tough, but as long as you can back up your views, you're good. He's accommodating, open to questions, and always willing to help.
Overall, Professor Dunnigan is not a bad professor. Great sense of humor and applies his hilariousness to the class extremely well. The pop quizzes came out of nowhere with some of the most random quiz questions ever. Was extremely jammed up towards end with 3 papers being due within 1 full month. Wish there was more clarity on how to write papers.
Professor Dunnigan's class is engaging, with thought-provoking discussions on the assigned readings. The workload is manageable, and Unstuckstudy proved helpful for essay prep. Stay on top of the work, and you'll do well in this class.
I don't say this lightly: best class I've ever taken. Prof developed this class and it is very important info in today's political climate. There are various types of media (newspapers, posters, comics, etc) from the women, gay, and civil rights movements. I took another one of his classes in a later semester because it was so impactful to me.
Professor Dunnigan was really nice and thoughtful in the essay feedback. He definitely wants you to dig deeper on the topics that you write to make sure that you are understanding all of the different perspectives. Great teacher!
You are graded on participation, but participating is relatively easy to do and complete. He gives recorded feedback on all major assignments which are pretty useful! He isn't a tough grader if you follow all guidelines. His energy even at 9am in the morning makes classes interesting and the filler assignments, if you pay attention are easy!
Professor Dunnigan is a really great instructor. I will say is that his class is writing intensive which is given in any English course but his prompts are very ambiguous and difficult to understand. If anything is unclear just go to him, he clears any concerns up. He absolutely wants you to succeed just be sure to communicate with him.
This is relatively basic English course, although high school does not teach you nearly enough when it comes to writing clearly. Thankfully, he gives a run down of all the necessary factors of an essay. He is a patient grader and cares about everyone receiving a passing grade. There are a lot of assignments in general but very completable.
