Good teacher, learned alot
He was such a wonderful professor. I took his class 3 years ago and I still think about stuff he taught me. He is interesting and fun. Highly recommended.
best teacher I've ever had in HCC. Very clear, bright.
One of the few truly outstanding professors at HCC, of which, I can count on one hand. I'm teaching things I learned in his class to others almost word for word.
Great teacher. Knows his stuff. Loved taking this class and would take him again, if needed.
Very helpful teacher, made the class exciting and fun. Outstanding teacher. Can't say how much I have learned.
Great Professor
Took both his antro and govt classes, he made govt as "exciting" as it could be. Antro was very enlightening and interesting. Great guy, don't hesitate, take his class!
the best instructer ive had at hcc
Mr. Fisk is a very intelligent professor. He made Anthropology very interesting and easy to stay in his nearly 3hr. night class. Although the hair was a distraction at first, i grew to accept it and realized it was just... him. Take this class if you want to LEARN something new AND pass the class.
Great guy, really knows his stuff. He has awesome stories and makes the subject interesting. He may be one of the better Prof's at HCC. I go to USF now and wish I had more Professors like him. I would take his classes again if I had to.
I couldn't agree more with all these reviews. Brian is an excellent teacher. His Intro Anthropology class was one of the best classes I've had at HCC. Not only is it very interesting, but this class is is also an easy A.
His hair says it all. Old fashioned in style and ideas. A lot of information for the test. Not an easy A class.
he was exciting but he was not helpful. he's tests were the worst. Very monotone. the worst Govt teacher.
this guy was awesome. this is not an easy subject but he makes it fun to learn. he is a great teacher and i learned a lot from him.
Yawn! I am a geek and I will admit to it but this class, boring! He never reviews for his tests. He does have a lot of interesting stuff to say but unless you are a total dork that enjoys the smallest details, this class is not for you. Not an easy A, you will have to read, a lot.

great teacher , recommend totally students should come over from usf for his ant 2410 class
Boring proffesor period. Lectures all class long without any gap for students to participate. Has his notes from year 1970 and wants to keep going because time runs out soon and boy.. he doesn't want to skip one dear sentence. Tests are not that hard. The painful part is listening to him. Gives 10 points extra credit that you get by writing 3 paper
Great teacher and class!! I am glad I signed up for this class and will take him again!!!
By far the best teacher that I have ever had. I took him for three classes because I enjoyed him so much. Very knowledgable and not out to trick you.
Great professor, intensive notes, but just turn up to class. easy exams if you read your notes and the text (gives a few text based questions so text is recommended), easy A with points to spare.
Very fun and interesting class
Mr Fisk is great. Tries to inject humor often. If you want to talk to him outside of class, he is very easy to talk to. Those that don't like him, are the people looking to just skate by in school.
What a great instructor. Makes the class as interesting as it could possibly be. Gives you a great outline for notes on the board as he teaches. Very accessible outside of class and genuinely concerned about students. This teacher is one of the best. Fun having an old hippie for a teacher too. :-)
Take his class! If you show up and study your notes you will have an A and enjoy doing it. This guy loves his subject and loves teaching, what more could you ask for!
Not a difficult class. He gives you enough information in class to easily pass and probably get an A. A little book reading put with this and its A's al the way. He puts the information together very well and enjoys teaching it. Like another rater said. "What more could you ask for?"
Interesting class mostly but a bit outdated. I think it has to do with the instructor as well. If he was willing to look at new infomation that is proved in the scientific community it would be an embarrasment for him to teach what he teaches. But what do we care right? As long as we have it easy. Take him.
he is soooo good! soo nice! and funny!
Great instructor. His enthusiasm is catching. Easy A...but please everyone...start your ethnography early, don't procrastinate! You'll feel the pain if you do..Otherwise though, it's an easy A.
His lectures are easy and he is clear but his test are kind of tricky!!! I thought it was going to be an interesting class but it really wasn't. It really wasn't what I expected the class to be!!
he is a walking anthropological dictionary. you basically just copy the notes he writes on the board and this is what most of his tests are on. i liked his way of teaching and the class.
When a class becomes painful to go to.. this is what you have to deal with. You feel like saying:"Dude, do you read at all? Skip your antient notes and breathe some fresh information. It might do good to you, not to mention us students. Shakes when confronted on the material he teaches. Has no answers for questions. Is this what you guys call great
What an awesome instructor. Love him to death. He'll answer your questions, bring in funa dn intersting objects of study. The best thing is..he's acutally done this job! He's not just teaching from a book, he's teaching us based on his experience. Pretty easy class iif you can write an ethnography...Take him!!
He is a knowledgeable teacher, and has a good demeanour. I like him personally. However the problem is attendance. Almost all of the exam material is drawn from his lectures. You cannot ace the tests unless you attend almost every class.
I really enjoyed his class, he made anthropology really interesting. You do have to be in class for notes because a lot of his test is on his notes but it is worth it. If you pay attention and take good notes you will be sure to get an "A"
I love him. He is one of the best Professors HCC has. He is unbelievable inteligent. He knows everything about everything. His tests are easy, his lectures are interesting. Only thing is, that he should update his information somewhat. Many things he mentioned in class where from the 70's. But overall his classes are easy and very interesting. And
He is a great teacher that speaks on every matter very clearly, all his tests are straight from the lecture. there are maybe one or two questions on the test from the book so dont waste ur money on the book
He is great just go to class and you'll be fine. He is very funny!
Only advise to pass the class; take notes and not just what he writes on the board, read the text book and COME to class. Not showing up will really hurt you for the tests. He does his very best to make the class fun, is available to answer any questions. Tests are easy & will reward those who show up and pay attention in class.
CLASS IS HARD AND HIS TEST ARE CONFUSSING. THE TEST COMES FROM THE NOTES WHICH ARE VERY CLEAR, BUT ANYWAY THEY'RE TRICKY. HES A GOOD PERSON BUT THE CLASS WAS VERY I MEAN EXTREMELY BORING.
Prof. Fisk is a great teacher, he lectures and writes a general outline on the board as he goes along. Sometimes he will throw some stuff in that does not go on the board to keep you paying attention. About 90-95% of the tests come from his lecture notes so make sure you go to class to get them all. Overall a good guy, knows his stuff.
I can't stress to you enough to READ, READ, READ the text. He is not joking when he says this to you in class. The tests are hard if you do read or take good notes. The class is all lecture based. There are no hand outs, pre tests, or class activities.
He's a goodguy, bottom line. Knows the topic well and has a passion for it, and is funny in his lectures as well. Only thing I cansay is attend most classes, as others have said on here. Nearly the entire test is based off his lectures.
He knows his stuff for sure. His classes are not only interesting but he has a great teaching style. He has a great sense of humor and throws in crazy answers to tests that made me laugh out loud! Mos def want to show up for class and take notes. I would recomend him to anyone. I had zero knowledge on anthropolgy when I started the class.
What a great guy! He really keeps me incredibly attentive in class, by speaking with such passion!
interesting lectures, writes everything important on the board. as long as you skim your notes befor class i say easy A
this guy knows his stuff, seriously. the material is pretty interesting and makes you think. he likes to pass around pics and show old movies. all his tests are based entirely on his lectures. the tests arent that hard and he grades on a curve and his tests are mult. choice and always have a random answer that is really funny. i HIGHLY reccomend
His lectures are clear and most of his tests comes from his lectures, so the more you attend class, the better you will do.
I love this professor! He is by far one of the most imteresting people I have ever met and a great professor. Make sure you come to class or you won't do good. He is very fair and writes almost everything on the board. I would skin the bold definition words in the text before a test though as he will through in a question or two from the book. Grea
This guy has got to be the coolest professor at HCC. Overall the way he teaches couldn't be anymore simple. He is almost character like when he walks in with his shabby suit case and coffee thermos. Hes always willing to answer questions on the subject and last but not lease he wont dock your grade if you dont share political beliefs.
GREAT teacher! Has a good personality & sense of humor. The notes are the EXACT information that you will find on the test; no unnecessary info here! Requres only one 4 page essay! Take the notes and do the essay, you will pass with flying colors..
He has an excellent lecture style. 75% of his exams are based on class lecture; therefore, one cannot afford to miss a class, and the rest is information in the text. He gives a challenging class; I truly enjoyed both his Anthropology class and his American Government class. Great teacher!
Cool professor, doesn't curb grades even with a difference in opinion. Will take him again this upcoming fail. HIGHLY SUGGESTED.
Thoroughly enjoyed this class. Attend class + take notes + read text = A
Professor Fisk is awesome. He's interesting and gives you tons of applicable knowledge rather than useless crap to memorize just for tests. I didn't know much about Anthropology until I took this class, but now I'm seriously considering becoming an Anthropologist. I hope to take another one of his classes next semester. I highly recommend him. =)
His class is very interesting, it can be boring something but he does a good job making sure you know things, just make sure you study your notes and never miss a class.
This teacher loves anthropology, you can easily understand why he is teaching this subject! take the notes, and study them pretty well and the test wont be too bad. do the essay its okay. if you do not believe in evolution dont take this class, it will be very boring. overall good class if you enjoy anthropology
Great professor and this has been my favorite class this semester. Attendance is absolutely mandatory! He covers alot of material and his tests can be tricky but if you study real hard you should do fine.
best teacher u wanna take for anthropology, he is cool, his test would be funny you would al least pass with C if u pay attention in the class. he is funny, helpful, communicative. overall i m going to take his other class too, cuz he is the best!
He tells you at the beginning the class WILL NOT be a rehash of what you learned in high school and he holds true to his word! You have 4 test, equally spaced and all based mostly on lectures (take more than the notes on the board) and secondly on the book (read text!). He makes the Gordon Rule extra credit. This class was great, take him to learn!
Wonderful, and very interesting! His teaching style is very effective. He is very pleasant and I learned alot.
He's great I learned so much from him.... I will recommend him to my friends
Awesome Professor. Loves his job, very creative, funny and intuitive. Was a pleasure coming to his class every week.
Excellent professor, he makes you get interested into Anthropology. I have not one complain about him.
EXCELLENT TEACHER!! I highly highly recommend him! His class is easy to follow, he brings in fossils to clarify his lectures. The class requirement is to TAKE NOTES, his lectures are simple to follow. Textbook is more of a guideline but is still necessary since some questions on teh test are from the book. (maybe >10) I made an A on the first test.
GREAT CLASS, THIS TEACHER IS GREAT, HE MADE EVERYTHING VERY ESAY TO UNDERSTAND. PERSONALLY I AM NOT FIRST LANGUAGE SPEAKER, AND SPEAK ENGLISH JUST FOR FEW YEARS AND I WALK AWAY FOR HIS CLASS WITH AN A.READ YOUR BOOK, COPY THE NOTES GIVEN ON THE BOARD, AND STUDY ... EASY:-)
This dude rocks! Simple lecture style: He says it, then writes it on the board, then explains more detail while you're copying. Then reseats. That may sound boring, but he makes it interesting. Test are 50 multi-choice, and based off notes and the book, which is an easy read. One 3 pg paper due (mandatory for FL, and worth extra credtit). Easy A!
Excellent Professor, great attitude.. Attend class, take notes of lecture, Professor will give you freebies, most questions based on lecture, some from text.. Fun class!
Professor Fisk is a great professor! Make sure you show up to class, take notes, and pay attention. You'll do great!
He's quirky and awesome, and was actually an Anthropologist.
Great professor! Straight-forward and pristine lecture/teaching style. Make sure you read the txt too, questions on exams vary from "according to your professor..." and "according to your text...". If ur absent get the lecture notes! Awesome professor :)I i wish he'd teach POS2112
I took Prof. Fisk for Intro to Anthro, Cultural Anthro and Am'n Government. He is my favorite Professor at HCC because he brings his personal knowledge to, and cares about, his students. Plus, he's an all-around awesome guy. You have to do the work, of course. Take him if you enjoy going to college to learn something new.
Great professor, I actually learned something from him and was a real Anthropologist that went to Colombia University. I would take his class again if I could. He really cares about all his students, and I was sad his class ended. It was nice showing up to his class every week, such a stress free environment. Study the notes, go to class and read!
Very good teacher! Writes all the notes on the board and gives you time to copy him. I study for 30 minutes before the tests and always got an A!
Fisk has worked with pillars of the global anthropology community. Take notes and focus for an A, he often gives hints or even freebies. One GR paper for extra credit points. The dude is truly inspirational. This guy doesn't have to teach at HCC, he genuinely cares. If youd like an uncut dissection of our times you must take this course
He knows what he is doing and is very good at. If you study the notes and read the chapters, A is inevitable. I wish i could take his other courses.
Very nice guy. Notes are super clear. You can tell that he loves what he does and he made me love it too! If you miss a class get the notes from a good notetaker in your class. Read the chapter you'll be talking about in class beforehand so that you don't get lost and then STUDY his notes for the test! Oh, and DO WELL ON THE ESSAY! It really helps!
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING PROFESSOR .. LITERALLY HATED ANTHRO BEFORE I TOOK HIS CLASS.. IT IS SO INTERESTING IN CLASS ALL THE TIME AND HIS EXAMS ARE PRETTY EASY IF YOU WRITE NOTES IN CLASS. HE WILL TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT WILL BE ON THE TEST
Great Teacher, makes this subject really interesting!
This class is not hard as long as you take good notes, pay attention in class, and skim over the required chapters in the book before each test. He is a nice professor and wants his students to do well, but will not put up with any crap. Also never expect to get out early because he uses every second he is given in class!
Fisk really enjoys anthropology and it is apparent through his lectures. Textbook use isn't frequent. The tests are 4/5 lecture notes and 1/5 text.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was a tough class, and he certainly knows his material Attendance isn't mandatory, but there is no classwork just 4 - 50 multiple question tests throughout the semester He words questions tricky but if you write down what he writes on the board you can pass with a C without any real struggle Oh and don't expect to get out early
HE COVERED SO MANY CHAPTERS LIKE 3 OR 4 FOR EACH UPCOMING EXAM.I DID LEARN INTERESTING STUFF BUT IT WAS SO MUCH TO STUDY, I FELT CHEATED WITH THE GRADE I GOT CAUSE I SPENT DAYS STUDYING FOR EACH TEST THIS CLASS REALLY BROKE MY SPIRIT FOR A LITTLE BIT HE GIVES SO MANY NOTES BUT WHEN YOU TAKE THE EXAM SOME STUFF THATS ON THE TEST ISNT IN THE NOTES.
I enjoyed the class mainly the second half! The first hald was dry to me but the class was very interesting. you really need to study everyday in this class to ensure you are grasping the material because he gives out a ton of info at once. there is one easy paper.
Mr. Fisk is by far one of the best and most passionate professors I have encountered. He bases exams primarily on lecture notes, some skimming of the text will help. Mr. Fisk CLEARLY states his expectations for YOUR success. He makes the course extremely interesting and informative. Do your job as a student, he does a great job of teaching.
Professor Fisk is an amazing professor, I enjoyed his lectures very much! It is very easy to take notes in his class, even if you write slow. His class covers everything (prehistoric, present events, economy, politics, culture, religion, family etc), be ready for a fun class. He is very well-rounded!
Professor Fisk is a great teacher, he tells you what he expects of you as a student on the first day. His lectures are amazing, and if you like taking notes his class is perfect. His tests are based mostly on his lectures, therefore, missing class is not recommended. If you study and take notes, you can earn a good grade in his class.
I liked professor Fisk very much, but if you are looking for an easy A do not take this class. He is a very knowledgeable teacher, very very smart but he is not easy. Lots and lots of reading, I had to read all the chapters by my self, he goes over them but moves wayyyyyy to quickly. He has a very different way to teach. There are 5 test. STUDY!!!
By far the best professor I've had at HCC. I learned so many things about the world in this class.
Hands down the best professor I've ever had at HCC. I really do wonder what someone like him is doing teaching at the community college level and hope he sees this and knows his students love him. He really knows his material and handles disruptions with grace. I'm always excited to hear his lectures because he just waxes poetic without any guide.
No chance for extra credit, books are over 200$ and is required, yet all the test are lecture base? Said he didn't say things I cited him on in essay when clearly had it written in notes. Very hot headed and close minded, HE'S ALWAYS "RIGHT".
Professor Fisk was one of my favorite professors at HCC. I'm a senior at USF now, and the information that I retained from Prof. Fisk's ANT2000 & Cultural Anthropology classes have been beneficial to my journey through Academia. I miss his classes, and urge anyone to take them.
Worse professor ever!!
I loved Professor Fisk. He was very informative, interesting and really knew what he was talking about. If you skip class a lot, don't like taking notes or don't like studying, you won't pass. 4 Exams, with one paper is all the grades you get. I learned a lot from him; I would definitely take him again.
HCC is so fortunate to have Fisk. Knowledgeable, laid-back, funny & understanding- he cares about his work & students. Expect a lot of writing, great documentaries & discussions. Attendance is crucial, but if you love anthro, you won't want to skip. Field work & ethnography provided great experiences. Exams are take-home essays & books are cheap!
Test are based on his lecture, so if you miss class, you'll most likely fail. He gives really nice clear lectures, so write everything down, and study your notes! He's overall really helpful if you have questions, he makes you write a easy paper, You learn a lot of amazing information!
Fisk is all around a good guy. His lectures interest me and inspire me to become an anthropologist. You don't need to buy the book. Most of his test questions are out of his lectures. (About 3 per test are in the book, but you can figure those out) You do need to come to class if you are going to pass. He has 4 multiple choice test & 1 Gordon Rule
This professor is very good at what he does! I enjoyed his class thoroughly. He really gets into his lectures and makes them enjoyable for his students. Tests are based mostly on his lecture with a few questions from the text. Gives plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion. Would definitely attend his class again!
He really knows his stuff and is wonderful to listen to. He's funny and casual. More than 90% of exam questions are from lectures. Great professor. I would take him every class if I could!
I love the way he explains in the lecture, he is the best professor I could have taken. If he could teach every class that would be wonderful!!
Fisk was actually a pretty good teacher. You don't really need the textbook and his tests are actually quite easy. Only downside is lectures.
Brian Fisk is a well-educated anthropologist. His background makes it obvious he knows what he's talking about. While I recommend him highly, get ready for a lot of work; his tests are multiple choice but challenging, his Gordon Rule paper is graded pretty strict, and he has a bit of a sardonic humor. Good luck!
Class is not hard at all, but you need to read. Its very unclear what to study for but its doable. Mister Fisk knows what he is talking about ant he is very compassionate. I really enjoyed having him for this class. There are only 4 tests and a paper.
No homework, only one essay and 4 tests. He is one of the best professors Ive ever had. He really knows the content and how to explain it to us. Use the textbook if you want to get an A on every test. It was a very interesting class and I definitely recommend to take it with him.
Pros: He has his lectures down pat. He's very approachable and is willing to help you. Cons: He does not use Canvas at all. His lectures are not recorded nor do you receive anything other than one handout. Advice: The majority of the exam questions come for his lectures, but some questions are from the book so read it.
He is a phenomenal Anthropologist. I gained so much information and knowledge from his class. I have purposely kept all my lecture notes. I am so thankful I was able to have him as a professor. I understand he will be retiring in the next year....
Hes really great but for the class I took we only had 4 exams and one essay therefore, if you got a bad grade its hard to fix that. You can skip class but a lot of the questions on the exam are from the lecture (I still recommend reading the online textbook). He writes the notes on the board for you. Its easy if you study its hard if you dont.
Graded on 4 tests and one Gordon rule essay. Majority of questions come from lecture notes with a few from the textbook. If you don't read it you can still get an A. He writes all the notes needed on the board so all you have to do is copy them down and study. Essay is required but added as "extra-credit" points to overall grade.
I had professor Fisk close to 10 years ago. I still think about him often. By far my favorite college course and professor. My major had nothing to do with anthropology but his knowledge and impact has stuck with me to this day. This man is legendary.
