He's awesome!
He makes the subject very interesting & lectures outstandingly well! Very generous and kind. 1 Group project: paper & presentation-not too bad/ 1 MID & 1 final, both do-able. Attendance is not mandatory. But if you want to pass the class, I suggest you attend...plus he offers great mental stimulation and food for thought. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ! <3
awesome professor, makes the subject so more intresting. If you take notes in class you shouldnt have a problem getting an A in the class. The reviews are very good.
Awesome!!!! Knows the material incredibly well. Makes the class interesting.
Love Fonseca ! He is a gem at FIU ! the best of the best ! he really cares about his students && is motivating. Great experience ! he is really passionate & intelligent. do yourself a favor & take him!
Positive, Generous, kind... Overall great professor ! Loved the course ! and Fonseca is brilliant (: he is witty and kept us awake so early in the morning b.c he makes everything 10x more interesting. I learned so much from Fonseca & enjoyed hearing his experiences. He is a great guy! Best class I've taken at FIU ; wish he would teach another class
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Period. His genuine interest and passion for the subject made you want to learn and show up to class. Very straight forward and helpful. His goal is to help you and have you leave with a greater sense of knowledge. He will be one of the 5 professors you'll fondly look back on. Take his classes!
Fonseca is amazing ! I am glad I took this course & didn't drop it the second I saw the term "GROUP PRESENTATION" in the syllabus :) . He is very generous and sincerely cares about the progress of his students. He helped me so much throughout the course. I enjoyed his passion and the depth of his knowledge and experience. Fonseca is top-notch!
Fantastic professor, very accessible and really cares about his students progress.Loved Him!!! Must take!!!
Absolutely a great class! Teacher was great and helpful, I recommend this prof. to anyone =]
Pro. Fonseca is absolutely the best professor not only from INR, he is the best from FIU. His calsses are vere clear and dinamics. He knows about the subject. Take this class!!
Professor Bryan is one of the best professor at FIU loves teaching, and his priority is for the students to learn not just to do work and homework because is required. i had this class staurdays early and he would always had coffe (starbucks) in class awsome :)
He is one of the best professors I've ever had the pleasure of having. He has a real interest in students succeeding. I thought a 5 hour lecture would put me to sleep but he is a great lecturer kept me awake and interested. The assignments weren't too bad either. Highly recommended!
He is an INCREDIBLE TEACHER! He made my 6 hour Saturday SUMMER course an enjoyable one! He makes his lectures interesting, has a lot of funny jokes and anectodes and brought coffee for the students every class. He show's interesting videos, and taught me a BILLION things about South America that are very interesting!!! YOU MUST MUST TAKE HIM! =}
i can now have a intellectual conversation on the context of central american integration (social, economic, and political) thank you professor
Professor Fonseca is by far the best professor at FIU. I had him for two classes this semester (CPO and INR) and came out of both classes feeling good about my education. He is so funny and easy to relate to. He loves his students and help them where he can. If you want to learn and have fun while doing it take professor Fonseca! : )
This is the best professor FIU has. He really cares for his students and loves teaching. You learn alot in his class. He gives you all the tools to pass it should not be hard if you go to class.
Great semester, great professor! I took him for politics of Central America and intl relations of Latin America and learned so much!!! Attend class and there is no reason one cant score an A.
best teacher at FIU, this is my secodn time taking a class with him and i think he is awesome. The class is not easy but he makes it easy and the main thing is that you learn and he is not there to give you an F, he would make sure you pass with at least a B so read notes PP and your good to go. book i never used it.
I've taken Fonseca twice and would highly recommend for you to do the same! He is the best professor at FIU, hands down! He really cares for his students! You will learn so much from Fonseca!! His passion for the subject is very admirable. It's not an easy A, but a class with Fonseca is worth the extra effort!
Fonseca is a great professor. Aside from being really nice, he is also very smart and passionate about the material he teaches. His lectures are always interesting and entertaining. If you take the Saturday class, he brings in Starbucks coffee for the whole class. You can?t ask for more, he?s awesome!
Couldn't wait until the end of the semester to rate this Prof. He is excellent! Lectures well, treats students with respect, and makes every attempt to help us smarter on the subject. In just 6 weeks I already have a strong understanding of international relations of South America!!!
He is such a genuine person. He truly cares about his students,& does everything in his power to facilitate the material to u. There is 1 MD, 1 Final,& 1 group present./paper.U really donâ??t need the book, as long as u attend class & pay attention, u will do fine. I promise u will never regret taking his class, u will learn so much!!! He is AMAZING!
Great class worth waking up early for! The professor makes it great, the class is easy as long as you pay attention to him and his class lectures and notes. He is always willing to answer any questions and the coffee in the am is great! take it if you want to know what teaching should be like
A great professor! Best in the department. I wish he taught more classes.
Basics: 2 exams, 1 group assignment/presentation. Brian is a fantastic teacher and the reason this class is easy is because he teaches it so well. Attendance not mandatory but definitely recommended. You will learn so much. No interest in Central America until I took this class. Now I signed up for 2 more classes with him. He is that good!
Professor Fonseca is absolutely amazing! He will never let you out early but he makes his class interesting. He really looks for class participation & he is extremely patient. He also makes himself readily available for students who freak out over exams. He gives a review that will guarantee an A. The only thing I didn't like was the group project
This man is amazing! His teaching style is similar to the Socratic method. He makes learning easy, thought provoking and fun, there's no way for you to fail really just read the Powerpoints and your textbook.
Fonseca is amazing! You will learn a lot. He makes the class interesting, and brings speakers! midterm, group project & a final. I will take him again
I took the class as an elective and I'm really happy I did. Fonseca a great professor, extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. the class isn't hard but you will learn a lot. one of the best professors at FIU he actually cares about the student!
Brian is the funniest most caring and interesting professor I've ever taken at FIU. I'm about to graduate and regret I didn't know about him earlier. Classes were hilarious, topics were interesting & he's knowledge goes beyond books. He gives great reviews prior to exams & wants to help. Do yourself a favor and take him.
Hands down the BEST professor I've taken in IR. He is caring, intelligent, and open to discussions and different opinions. He gives you all the resources to do well both in exams and in papers. He is very fair and always available to students. I'd take any class he teaches, he makes things easy to understand and class is never boring. Take him!
Prof. Fonseca is amazing. A true master of his craft. His teaching style is great, you learn a whole lot, and he really captures your interest on the subject. I wish he could teach more classes! INR was by far my favorite. HIGHLY recommended! :) take him!!
Great professor! He is one of the niecest teachers I have ever taken at FIU. He really knows his stuff. Mid-term , FInal, group presentation. He gives greats reviews for the test ! :)
I took Prof. Fonseca Spring 2014 on Saturdays. He is one of the best professors I have ever taken. He cares about his students, is very knowledgeable on the material & makes class interesting. I enjoyed his class so much that I am registered for another course with him in the Fall. I highly recommend him.
Awesome professor. Lectures are engaging and interesting. He is funny, respectful and understanding. Two exams, two short papers and a presentation. Grades fairly...Just take him :)
This was one of my favorite IR classes I've ever taken. This professor is GREAT and super relatable. Attendance is not mandatory but necessary. You can just attend class and get an A in this class. I will definitely take this professor again. Class consisted of 2 tests and a group presentation/paper. I HIGHLY recommend this professor.
He is an awesome professor and super approachable. I took for Central American politics, he is so funny. He lets you pick the way the midterm is. my recommendation is to do part essay and part multiple choice because if you don't do so hot on the multiple choice aspect he helps you out with the essay. also he gives extra credit. Totally Recommend.
Professor Fonseca is one of the best professors FIU has to offer. Not only does he have first hand experience in working in and with many Latin American governmentscountries but he also goes the extra mile and explains all the material in an understandable manner. Tests are straight forward and he gives you notes and slides to use for studying.
This class was amazing! Professor Fonseca does a great job at keeping the class interesting. Midterm, final, and group project, all very straight forward. He gives you all the slides and reviews to make sure you get a good grade. Gives extra credit. Great class, great professor! Take it!
The second course that I've had with Brian and I'm taking another this semester! Classes are fun and straightforward, you'll know everything you need to for the exam. One papergroup project, midterm and final. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. Bonus: Ask about conejo island.
Excellent professor, very helpful and understanding. Explain very well the material and the material taught is usually very interesting.
TAKE HIM! TAKE HIM! TAKE HIM! Trust me! You will learn in any of his classes. I recommend Brian highly!
This was an excellent class. The professor engages the class in relevant in interesting discussions. Consisted of a midterm, final, and group research paper. He covers materials in class, and emails you the material as well. Provides a great review for both the midterm and final. He is very approachable and offers help. Definitely recommend
Probably the best proffesor I've ever had. Totally caring towards his students! He is extremely knowledgable about the material. He has lived it! Working with other country's and governments! He is there for you and super clear about assignments! The best part about his classes are his lectures! Very energetic and fun and learnative!
Great class, and great professor. The material is presented in a captivating way. Interesting discussions. Highly, highly recommended. I would definitely take again.
Brian has to be one of the BEST professors FIU has. There so much to be said about his classes and himself. Classes are always an unique experience and Brian goes above and beyond in helping his students succeed. Amazing, amazing, amazing!
Professor Fonseca is a great professor! He's very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. He knows practically everything that's going on in Latin America. Class requires effort but passable. Also, pleasant to look at!
This was such a great class. Very engaging. Probably one of the best classes I have taken at FIU. Highly, highly recommended. Professor Fonseca is an outstanding and captivating instructor. I think we would be great at any class, but his in depth and personal knowledge from this course really made it interesting.
This professor is really nice BUT he rambles on and on about things that do not pertain to the lecture at all... did not reply to many of my emails as well. the class is a group project, a midterm and final.
Professor Fonseca is mediocre at best. Not only does he not discuss the assigned reading materials during lecture, he also fails to respond to emails. He would rather discuss his own personal political stories as opposed to the course materials.
Highly recommend the class and professor! He is great! This U.S. Department of State Diplomacy Lab is a bit different then traditional courses. It consists of a semester long research project. There is a few assignments due and weekly meetings. Fonseca is extremely knowledgeable and helpful in anything you need. Very flexible and understanding!
Best professor in the world.
Having Brian Fonseca teach Diplomacy Lab was a job well done on behalf of FIU. His manors, way of presenting the material, and engaging the class is by far the best. I would definitely take his class again. If you're looking to bust your butt and gain information that'll challenge you, I highly recommend taking him for a class.
Every now and then you come across teachers that change the course of your future either by example or by being able to see potential when you couldn't... Professor Fonseca is one of those teachers. He's highly dedicated and a wealth of information in topics from Cyber to IR. Dont finish college without taking a class with him!
One of the best professors I've had in a while. He inspires students and really knows his stuff. There's no dull moment with him. 10/10.
Prof. Fonseca knows exactly what he is teaching and it would be tough to find another college professor with the knowledge that he possesses. He has made a career for himself in national security and can easily translate it into the classroom. Solid knowledge base. I would recommend him and any of his courses, of which I have taken two. Awesome guy
I always found the assigned readings extremely enjoyable because the material had to do with my area of interest. This course explored the fundamentals of national security thoroughly. Professor Fonseca's lectures were always informative and fun to participate in. I enjoyed this class mainly because the the topics that were discussed.
Expected more from this class, unfortunately the structure did not exactly help. Take this course with someone else if you really do want to get the intended results of improvement. I personally did not learn anything new.
Professor was just a cool laid back guy who really knew a method of teaching that connected with the students and integrate them to learn. He's not afraid to get comfortable and just open up about himself. He's quite an important figure and someone you will simply like to know, interview and learn from. He's a champion!
Amazing instructor who is one of the few professors I've had who truly, really cares about every single one of his students. He's the busiest person I've ever met in my entire life and is involved in everything but still makes time for students. His lectures are super interesting and conversational, and his teaching methods are the same. 11/10
As long as you do your research for his papers you should be fine.
Has vast knowledge on topic and makes lectures interesting and engaging. He likes to hear opinions of students and have discussions. Your grade is solely dependant on how much effort you put in. Best professor at FIU!!! I have taken at least one class of his every semester since I started. Take him, you'll learn a lot and enjoy it. No book needed.
Never learned so much from a professor. Anyone who complains about his classes simply doesn't try. Taken all the classes he teaches and sad that there aren't anymore I can take. Although he is extremely busy, he will go above and beyond for his students. Has a wealth of knowledge and experience. He genuinely wants all his students to pass. Amazing.
Here, in this class you choose a research topic with a group under a mentor. There are 5 annotated bibs, 2 diplomacy simulations, 2 research summaries, 2 peer review feedbacks, 1 draft team report, a final presentation, and a final paper. A lot of work but you learn so much. The problem is having an unreliable team, so choose wisely
Pros: Easy grader, Great lectures, Smart Cons: Can be vague with assignment criteria
Professor Brain was amazing even thought we only had for half the summer and the work load was a lot he still manage to make it fair and easy.
The ISS6658 course was great! Although there is quite a bit of reading in this course, it is not boring textbook reading, it is thought provoking. The professor was awesome, he was a very fair grader, the assignments had clear instructions, was extremely communicative throughout the course, and very understanding. I highly recommend this course.
This class is amazing. I've never learned so much from a professor in my time at FIU. He knows so much about EVERYTHING and you'll definitely learn from him. Also, this class gives you the opportunity of a lifetime to do research that matters. Best professor ever and the best class ever.
Markets himself as a professor, when he's an adjunct (lacks PhD). Not aware of events in his "area of expertise" (Latin America). Instructor often repeats what students can read in newspapers or blogs. Has an interesting relationship between the university and private sector.
I took this class with Professor Fonseca as a two-semester class. The course is made up of a few in-person and virtual assignments, but the main focus is working with your selected group on one, in-depth research report. Prof. Fonseca would give good feedback and was usually very understanding even if the group ran into significant complications.
Professor Fonseca is one of the best professors I have had at FIU. He is very professional, knowledgeable, and cares about his students. He is also very accessible and nice to deal with if you have any issues or concerns. I learned a lot in his class, and the subject matter was very interesting. I highly recommend this course.
Class is not difficult, you just gotta manage your time. 4 discussions, (500-words), and 1 reply (200-300 words). A midterm, (proctored through lockdown browser), a final policy memo paper (5-7 pages), and an assignment of you talking explaining what your paper will be about. All tedious but very doable.
You need to take him. He's always given feedback on your presentation. He's very clear on what we should be expecting on the Diplomatic Lab. He'll provide a different project that we will chose, choose the project that interesting to you.
Great professor and TAs, inspired me to become an INR major. The research you do in this class can become a lot but it's really fun and rewarding, especially if you like your topic. The entire class is working towards one major presentation, but it's group-based so make sure you learn to work with them. If you don't, good luck girl..
After taking his class, I was initially interested in having him as a mentor. But during a 1:1 meeting, when I shared that I was considering a position outside of FIU, the conversation began to feel uncomfortable. I didn't feel encouraged or supported in pursuing my goals and left unsure about seeking his guidance again.
He's constantly busy and traveling which makes him slow to respond. I needed help on an assignment but didn't hear back until three weeks later, but I had to go to another professor for help.. The content is simple, an easy A, class is interesting, but the lack of responsiveness made it harder than it needed to be. that's why he's rated as "ok"
He's hard to reach at times & needs to be mindful of what he says. but he try his best. he is interesting to listen to, I never wanted to sleep in his class, & it's an easy A.
I dropped this course because he didn't respond to 2 of my emails about his assignments, and I was worried about failing and didn't want my GPA to tank. He finally responded when he realized I dropped out.
Took Fonseca's national security course and loved it. Reinforced my interest in a career in national security. There was a lot of reading, but he added videos and podcasts which made it more dynamic. He was accessible when I needed guidance. Provides his cell on his syllabus and was immediately responsive to my text messages (on a Saturday).
THIS MAN IS MY GOAT. Dr. Fonseca is the greatest professor of all time. He is responsive and will help you no matter what. He can be busy but will always make time for you. Dr. Fonseca has delivered the most outstanding lectures about a range of global issues. His class is amazing and super interesting for public policy. Truly not enough words.
Dr. Fonseca is an incredible professor both in and outside the classroom. He is the professor you would want to have in a research course since he provides clear guidance and feedback when you engage with him. Make the most out of his class and pick his brain about everything.
Dr. Fonseca is truly one of the best teachers I've ever had. He has a vast knowledge of global issues, which is only compounded by his decades of experience. He genuinely cares for each student's success and will work with anyone willing to put in the work.
Great professor! Clear assignments, understanding with extensions, and truly wants students to succeed. Tests can be challenging but fair. I've taken him twice, and I would gladly take him again in a heartbeat. 10/10.
Professor Fonseca is one of the nicest professors at FIU. He is always willing to help with whatever you need, even if it isn't directly related to the class. He is a wonderful professor and an even nicer person outside of the class. He does travel a bit and that does sometimes affect the class schedule but his TA's are always there to help.
He is a really good professor, he always sticks up for his students and helps them out however he can.
For the second half of this class, he is a bit more relaxed and expects the students to know what they are doing if you've taken 3034 before. For students starting in the second half of the year, he helps walk you through similar to if you took the first half of the class.
I highly recommend Dr. Fonseca. His wealth of knowledge and experience inspires thought-provoking conversations inside and outside of the classroom. His kindness and investment in the next generation are evident in every interaction and initiative he undertakes. I am very grateful our paths crossed.
Professor Fonseca was awesome. Really kind and caring while creating a great learning environment! I would love to take more courses with him.
The entire class was very fun, especially when he brought guest speakers. It's heavily team-oriented, so expect to do a lot of group assignments.
Course labeled as an “Internship” its not. no placement/help is provided by the professor. Most of the class is spent writing 1 paper, with 4 meetings. Discussion often centers on the professor rather than course material, as there is little beyond the paper. Canvas modules are empty. only one class was recorded despite being told all would be.
