Avoid this class at all costs. Dr. Ganley seems like a nice guy, and he seems like he cares, but his tests are the exact opposite of the lecture notes. The only reason I got a C in the class was because of the lab. Ganley is good when it comes to answering questions and responding to e-mails, but he is not a good professor.
He was a nice guy and went out of his way to answer WebCT questions and was very helpful during office hours. His tests were hard but do the book problems, practice test, and go to some office hours and you'll be fine.
Tests incredibly hard
Mult. choice tests too hard? LOL!!! This class was straightforward.
He gets a bad rep just becasue the class he teaches isn't easy. He is very good about going out of his way to help and clear up questions. He has office hours practically every day. I think the reason so many people have a hard time is that they don't actually go to class (8am). If you go, it's not that bad.
Thoese who cant do teach! Ganley can't teach though. He basiclly summarizes the book and move very quickly though material with little or no explantion. His tests are about as difficult as they come and he does little to nothing to assure his students are prepared for them. Practice test do not reflect the test and his explations are beyond poor.
after taking this class twice i will never again give the mizzou chem dept. another cent. gainly is a useless teacher. if you're "not ready" he won't let you go on to chem 1320. but with the curve apparently some people become ready! take chem at a community college and get your $$ worth
Its chemisty. Its going to be difficult. Just go to lecture EVERYDAY. You can even ask questions in lecture, and he will stop everything and answer them and re explain them until you can understand it.
He certainly isnt concerned with making certain students understand, or enjoy the material. His lectures are straightforward and follow the book almost verbatim. Dont ask too many questions........it will just confuse him and waste class time.
Goes through material very fast. He will stop to answer questions, but then keeps on going without really explaining anything. If you read the book you'll do OK.
Very hard class i took Chem I & II in high school and got A's i failed this class even with the curve. Don't take this class at Mizzou take it at a CC. Thats what im doing this summer. Very hard goes through very quickly. All test are math based NO concepts. Memorization required. I never read the text book maybe thats why i failed doubt it.
I failed this class the first time I took it - when I repeated it Ganley was the lab professor. He stayed after class with me for two hours every day, just to make sure I understood what was going on. Thanks to him, I passed with a B! Also had him for Chem. Capstone... He's one of my favorites.
Professor Ganley is one of the worst professors I have ever had. I have never had less than a B in my life and I got a D in his class. When taking notes in class the information seems easy enough, but his tests are nothing like what he goes over in class. His exams are virtually impossible to ace. Not to mention he has a bad sence of humor...
Having had chem for two years before, this class was really easy. However, if I hadn't had chemistry before I don't think I would have understood much. Ganley means well and I'm sure he's helpful in his office hours, but his letures weren't as lear as they could have been. Make sure to always do the online practice tests before each exam.
THis is the best chemistry teacher ever! Why? Because he actually answer questions and he doesn't yell at you for not reading the book:)
I think he was a great teacher. Sure he was kind of boring at 8 a.m. but whatever. He went over exactly what was going to be on the test and what basic kinds of problems would be on there. If you go to class and pay attention, you should have no problem getting an A.
The class wasnt that difficult if you paid attention and went to lecture. Yes, it means waking up at 8am, but it helps. The tests were difficult, but he helps those who seek it; Professors only care if you care. He gives u an exact ex. of the 20pt problem and the 20 MC's do require work. Hard to finish in 50 min. spend time wisely. Ended with an A!
Dr. G is more than willing to help you with the material. I think that if you do your part by reading the text (before lecture), doing practice problems(before the week of the exam), and practice exams while asking questions then you should be fine. As he told me, just remember that this is pretty much the base course, and it only gets harder.
He's a nice guy and his lectures are easy to follow. His tests are very hard, in my opinion; but if you do the practice exams it shouldn't be too bad.
If you enjoy teaching chemistry to your self, are willing to search for meaning why you have a professor at all, and already know chemistry, this is the perfect professor for you. You will learn nothing from him, so don't bother going to class, and nothing he talks about in lecture will find it's way to the exam anyway. Good luck.
studying for this class was definitely the worst. His lectures come directly from the book, but tests are HARD. I found that the best way to succeed on a test was a review session with a good TA. Overall, I would say AVOID this one.
Not as bad as I taught but his curving policy is what I would call BS. I went to class all the time at 8 a.m. and then found no use for it later on. Didnt go to any at the end and still wound up with a B. My TA was awful too. just read the book, thats all it is
Ganley is an awful teacher. Not only are lectures boring, they have nothing to do with what is on the test. His tests are pretty hard, even after doing practice exams/ study guides. Don't take his class!
He is worthless... worthless notes, worthless practice tests, worthless everything...If you want to pay him for nothing go ahead, but you basically have to teach yourself. Also, tests are extremely hard.
Ganley is TERRIBLE.
He is just very hard to follow. Especially if a student has never taken a chemistry class in their life. It is not impossible, but the test are very difficult to excel on.
I DON'T KNOW WHY SO MANY PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT DR. GANLEY. IF YOU GO TO HIS LECTURES AND PARTICIPATE IN LAB, YOU SHOULD BE FINE ON THE EXAMS. I HAD ONE TODAY AND IT WAS ONE OF THE EASIEST EXAMS I HAVE EVER HAD, AND BELIEVE ME, CHEMISTRY IS NOT MY STRONG SUIT. HE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING VERY WELL AND IS A NICE PERSON. EASY A OR B FOR THIS CLASS..
I had Dr. Ganley for 3 classes and found him to be extremely clear and helpful. While lectures can be dry at times, he only presents the most important information and his tests are fair (and much easier compared to other professors who teach the same course). Always available to help. Truly one of the nicest people I've ever met.
So there are two sides to this. If you had Ganley in 1310 like I did, the tests were extremely difficult and he was not helpful at all. Averages on tests were very low! However, students in Chem 1100 say they are doing well. Those lab points really bump up a grade so people do much better in that class because its easier. Two sides to the story!
He doesn't teach the subject and merely says that it is because of the rigor of the course. If you are a pre-med or pre-vet student and are content with a C in this course, then you and Dr. Ganley will get along great. if you are like me and are not okay with it, then prepare to dread his class everyday.
I had Ganley for Org 1 and 2. He is very accessible if you need help. His exams are hard but not impossible because he takes questions EXACTLY from lecture, which are all from material in the book. You do need to put some work into the class (it is organic chem), and if you do you will do just fine.
I had Ganley for Orgo 1 and 2 and thought he was fine. He posts all of his lectures on tegrity and so going to class is completely optional (no attendance points or anything). He also is a pretty funny guy (which you wouldn't expect) and throws random comical lines into his lectures that often go unnoticed but are very corney and hilarious.
Dr. Ganley is the man. I didn't even like science until he introduced me to chemistry and I fell in love! Thanks to Dr. Ganley's passion for science and his students, I am now a PhD Chemist at Cornell University! Thanks Dr. Ganley for everything!
So, I've heard Ganley is NOT the prof you want for General Chemistry, but I logged in just to defend his honor. He rocks at Organic Chem, and he loves it. And he made me love it too; I'm going to Grad School for it, after swearing I'd abhor chemistry forever. Ganley is awesome. And so is Organic Chem.
Yes, chemistry may be a hard subject but Ganley is a good teacher who is enthusiastic about student learning. Never had him for Gen Chem but Organic 1 and 2 have been just fine. I'm glad I got him instead of the other harder professor for Orgo 2!
I had Ganley for organic 1 and 2. Organic 2 is a really tough class, and requires a lot of studying. All lectures are on Tegrity, which is really helpful. Even though I received C's in both organic 1 and 2, I felt that Ganley was a pretty good teacher.
I knew nothing about Chem when I first went in to this class. But Ganelys class was fairly clear and straight forward, and focused his lectures on what was going to be on the test. Yes it required a fair amount of studying to get a good grade like any other class. As long as you use the printable slides for lectures and study, it isnt too hard.
Was not helpful and didn't seem to teach us what was on the exams. If I hadn't taken chem in highschool, I definitely wouldn't have passed.
I spent more time reading the book. I almost felt like i wasted my money because everytime i went to class I did not know what was going on. Also he doesn't talk loud enough during his lectures and on tegrity it sounds horrible. He doesn't explain well and he hates teaching this class. You can tell!
I enjoyed taking this class. It did take a lot of work to get an A but he was helpful. Having all the lectures on tegrity was also very useful in studying since all the tests are just based off of lectures. Also he curves the class in the end.
Pretty difficult class! He is not very interesting to listen to but you have to go to class to do well on the tests!! Important to do well on the first test so you have some cushion for your grade!
His lectures are terrible and he really struggles to explain things clearly. Rarely do people ask questions because when they do he can't answer them any better than the first time he explained it. I'm still taking this class, anyone know how big the curve is? I'm at a 62% in the class right now... The new book is what is saving me from failing.
Ganley was a great professor to take Organic with! His lectures reinforced the readings and his tests were VERY reasonable. The class takes some effort but an A is certainly attainable.
Don't Expect a huge curve.
Go to class is essential don't rely on tegerity. The curve of the last 1 or 2 points.
Very tough course, and very tough professor. Did not clarify overall test material, nor did specify curve. Was at a B before final until final and expected curve. Gave a 1% curve as well as mocking of students questions of curve. Average below 70%.Teacher was also extremely monotone.
Not a bad class, some exams ended up high. Class is not that easy.
Prof. Ganley isn't that bad of a professor. He makes organic as easy as it can be. Exams are multiple choice; 4 exams(1 dropped)+final+homework. The exams aren't that impossible. Just make sure you go to lecture, and understand the mechanisms (the foundation for understanding org.); don't forget gen. chem. stuff either. Understand the HW also.
Ganley is a good professor. The class is hard, but if you get a tutor and go to his office hours, then you should be fine. The test are a little tricky so be prepared to study the information that was given in class and read the book.
Easiest Chemistry class I've taken at Mizzou. Learn the material, and it's pretty easy to recognize concepts on the test. Going to miss him for Organic 2.
One of the most understanding and straightforward teachers I have ever taken. If he makes a mistake, he takes full responsibility for it. Great teacher! If you study, you'll be fine.
This class is not as hard as people make it out to be--but it is a challenge. It is better to overestimate rather than underestimate this class. =STUDY= and you will make it out alright. It is a time investment, but his tests are very fair. I occasionally emailed questions and he always responded clearly and thoroughly. Respectable professor
I enjoyed Dr. Ganley's class. He is the most fair teacher you will have. If you read the chapters and study the lectures you will do fine. He records every lecture on tegrity. Overall he is a very good professor.
He did not seem concerned with the fact that every test average was a D- and did not acknowledge that in any way whatsoever. Tests had very few questions, if you missed more than two you could not get an A on the test. Planned tests poorly by scheduling them before labs that pertained to the test, so many students had a disadvantage.
Good professor, but his tests are BS. They're 25 question multiple choice, so missing only a couple questions puts you in the D+/C- range on exams. On top of that some of the questions are designed to trick you so pay close attention. If the tests weren't multiple choice I would've enjoyed this class a lot more and probably have done a lot better.
The class averages on every test were no higher than a D, and Ganley doesn't seem interested in whether each student learns the material or not. All the lectures are online, and the textbook is roughly followed, but the questions are nothing like those in the book, and some are designed to trick you.
Dr. Ganley knows what he is doing, and will make the tests VERY rigorous. There is so much information to absorb. All lectures are online, which is extremely helpful. Attending class is key if you want a decent grade at all.
I highly recommend Ganley. He uses Tegrity which is awesome. His tests are fairly straight forward. He drops your lowest test score. The homework is pretty easy. I suggest reading the book in addition to watching the lectures. The book was extremely helpful. Overall, a good class. It is definitely possible to get an A.
Averages on the exams were mid 60's and very difficult. No point in going to class since Tegrity is used. Had a 78 before any curve and came out with a C+ so don't expect a large curve if any. Final was optional which was nice but in all honesty it would lower your grade if you did take it.
Classes are on tegrity, I took this an equivalent class to 1320 in high school, the class was review for me. He doesn't give out reviews, so you'll need to get other teachers, Overall an okay teacher, but typically your monotoned college lecture professor
Realize that this course is going to be rigorous no matter who teaches it. Dr. Ganley is about as fair as they come where grading is concerned and no his tests aren't impossible, but they are relatively tricky. My advice: study, study, and STUDY SOME MORE. Your grade will ultimately be a reflection of how much effort you put in... plain and simple.
Mediocre at best. 4.0 until this guy. The tests are poorly written (according to my husband who has a PhD in organic chem) and often contain mistakes. Avoid this guy.
For a regular Freshman level Chemistry lecture, the course is not that bad. It definitely could be worse. He is a decent speaker and if you happen to miss class, there are online lectures. Do all the online hw and quizzes and if you don't have an awesome t.a. I would definitely do some problems from the back of the book. Exams are not that bad.
Ganley is an awesome teacher! He is extremely fair, knowledgeable, and teaches a hard subject very well. He drops one test and makes the final optional! I had to miss an exam due to work and he let me take it in his office hours. He posts everything on online on tegrity. Study 8-10 hours for each test and you will definitely get an A!
He's a great teacher who knows what he's talking about. Class is on tegrity, so you don't have to go. The course material is not hard to learn, as long as you apply yourself, but the tests are crazy hard. There's a nice curve at the end, and the final is optional. I got C's on all the tests, but an A on the hw, and got a B in the class
He's extremely helpful if you email him, ask him questions in class, or go to office hours. I hear his class is easier than with other professors.
A very good professor, one of the best in the Chem department. Lectures are clear and organized, he really knows what he's talking about. Tests are very difficult, he does try to trick you. Study a lot and do tons of practice problems. Grade was saved when he announced the final was dropped!
Dr. Ganley is one of the best professors in the chemistry dept. His lectures are easy to follow as he is really good at explaining the material. He does a good amount of examples that help to see applications. Exams are tough, so study and get help if you need it. I would take another class with him.
The class covers some tough material but Ganley is a great teacher and as long as you stay on top of things and go to office hours when needed you should do well. You get to drop your lowest test and the final is optional. The fourth test is the hardest so nail the first three and you are set.
Ganley is a good teacher. I'm in his class right now and doing well. He does tegrity so you don't always need to go to class. The tests are hard if you don't study. But he provides practice exams and uses a lot of the same questions on the actual tests. If you do the work, this class is easy. He also drops the lower test score.
Tests are short, so each question carries a lot of points. Lectures are confusing and useless. No effort to explain material. Assumes you know everything. Basically reads lecture slides.
So glad I took Chem 1100 with Ganley. For every exam he let us bring in a regular size piece of notebook paper with notes and formulas, or whatever you wanted to put on it to help you for the exam. He drops the lowest exam score, curves the entire class, and the final is completely optional. Tests are pretty difficult but hey, it's chem.
He does a great job explaining concepts and ideas. Do not be afraid to raise your hand in class if you have any questions. Very fair with grades. Go to his office hours whenever possible and always ask for help when you need it because this class is very difficult and there is a lot of material covered. Organic Chemistry is a different language.
Dr. Ganley is a very fair professor. The homework is easy, but the tests are multiple choice and they are HARD! Make sure to go to the tutor sessions (they really help) Also sit in the front of class because he doesn't talk very loud. The final is optional and there is a fair curve at the end of the year. I would take another class with him.
Do the homework for a boost to your grade. READ THE BOOK AND DO ALL OF THE PROBLEMS. I only did a few for the first test and failed. For the other tests, I rewrote my notes, did all of the book work, went to tutoring, and always attended lectures. I got 90+ on all of them. Dropped test & optional final are great. He is a good lecturer and funny.
Ganley is a fabulous teacher. I had been warned by so many that the class was very challenging - I mean, come on! It's Organic Chemistry, that's to be expected. He is a brilliant man so prepare: the exams are tough. The homework is easy and the practice exams are NOT a reflection of what the exam is going to be like. He's so nice, go talk to him :)
He was a great teacher! You don't have to attend classes because he posts lectures online. If you do attend lectures, then sit up front because he talks quietly. He drops lowest test score & you get to use a full piece of paper with notes & formulas on it on the test. Also, use the practice exams that he posts on blackboard. They help tremendously!
It's Organic chem not a walk in the park. Go to class if you want to be an over achiever and get to know him. He does tegrity which is very helpful. Homework is due every week, use chegg if you can. I didn't use my book at all or the model kit. Tests are hard of course, can easily guess, curve is large for each exam, and Pete is very helpful!
I only attended the tests and got an A. Just start studying for the test 3-4 day in advance and watch the tegritys and write down what he says as well as what's on the slide.
This class is applying chemistry to life. You learn about different plastics, batteries, all about water, etc. You are off to a good start if you remember the stuff you learned in your high school chemistry class.. you will apply that to life. He has really boring lectures, but he puts every lecture on tegrity. Go to lab because it's easy points
I'm not a fan of chem and didn't do well with it in high school, but I got an A in this class. The tests are easy if you pay attention to the tegrities, labs and take advantage of the online resources that he offers. There are multiple recycled questions from his past exams that he puts up on Blackboard.
All around just not a nice guy, have to buy an access code for online homework. HE REFUSES TO HELP YOUR GRADE AT ALL. The worst part about him is the whole semester he talks about the large curve he gives at the end of the semester, the curve was 1.2%, which basically didn't help at all. I received an A-(was trying for an A) and worked hard for it.
This is a weed-out course. That being said, it is still very possible to get an A in the course. Perform well in the labs, they will save your grade. Do the homework they will save your grade. Grade is curved at the end of the semester. Getting an A on every assignment and a C average on the exam depending on the curve can get you an A in the class
As someone intending to major in Chemistry take this with a grain of salt, but this class is really not bad. Do the recommended book problems and write down ones you don't get. Ask Ganley questions. Ask the TAs questions. They are there to help and Chemistry is actually pretty fun once you get it :)
he talks from the beginning of the class about how there is a good sized curve at the end of the semester it ended up being .6%. so don't count on that for your grade. It was a real bummer when I had a 89% and thought I would be curved up to an A- and there I sat with my 89.6% from the curve. he's the only orgo 1 teacher so you have to take him :(
To be honest, he's not that great or bad. He clearly knows what he's talking about, but he seems to more glance over things than explain them a little too much for my liking. Personally trying to talk to him, he's a nice guy and willing to work with students if they need help.
Difficult class, I attended lectures and did homework, I have to retake it. LOT of memorizing and studying , at least 12+ a week for studying.
Loved Ganley, he uses tegrity for every lecture (which is an online video of his complete lecture), so attendance is optional. I rarely attended and relied on the videos and it worked. Just complete your labs and watch every video (or attend every class) and you'll do just fine as long as you're fairly smart.
Ganley can drop a few dime one-liners on you in lecture. Gives a pretty clear message of what you need to know for the test. He's monotone so I found it relatively easy to skip class and watch at double speed to make him a little more interesting.
His tests are usually not indicative what you know from the units. He puts purposefully tricky questions on the tests. You definitely need to do book problems and buy the solutions manual because it explains all the problems. Overall he kinda sucks and I usually would never blame a teacher for a subpar grade.
Gan-man is a classy and respectful dude. However, he is a bit cookie-cutter as his lectures don't deviate much from the book. Just go to lecture (or watch on tegrity if you're lazy) and/or read the book. Understanding the material will significantly reduce amount of memorization and make things easier on you.
Dr. Ganley is a great professor, he is extremely willing to help students and if you go to office hours it will save your semester. Organic Chemistry is a hard class so seek out additional help, that's what office hours are for. But overall as long as you're not lazy, go to lecture, and study on your own an A is easily attainable. Decent curve too.
Ganley channeled the textbook in his lectures, and since Klein is a great textbook, the lectures were clear and constructive. If you can count carbon atoms and embrace the "language" of chemistry (understand patterns of reactions) , the tests are a breeze. That said, he tests were annoyingly entirely multiple choice, so silly mistakes can get you.
Dr. Ganley certainly means well but many of his lectures merely recite the book. So read the book on your own and go to your teacher aids for help. I ended up with a B in the class. Tests are not curved and I could have/should have worked a bit harder. An A is definitely possible with hard work.
Ganley taught well, but you will definitely have to put in the extra effort yourself if you want to succeed in this class. He used Tegrity, so it was easy to go back and watch them over again if studying for the test. The class is very clear cut, but required a lot of studying.
There are 5 tests that are 25 multiple choice and there's no curve on them. Weekly homework counts for a big part of your grade (about one test score). I really hated how the grading worked. Multiple choice is a bad way to test for orgo in my opinion and for 25 questions if you miss more than 2 you're already at a B. Classes are boring
5 exams with the optional final, drops lowest grade of exams. Final can't hurt your grade. Lectures were boring and long (if Chemistry isn't your thing). Uses Tegrity for lectures. GO TO LABS!
Chem isn't easy no matter the professor but does a good job of explaining things and lecture isn't awful. Tests are multiple choice and he tells you what you're going to need to know. Doing all your homework and studying the night before and you should be good.
Nice guy, clear but boring lectures. You'll need the book. Practice tests are absolutely, 100 percent, nothing like the actual tests. Don't let those fool you.
Dr. Ganley is clear an concise in lecture and fair in his tests. So, if you go to lecture and actually listen their should not be a single concept you won't understand on the test; everything is there. Also, the practice and explanations needed for calculation problems are all in sapling. No searching for hours in the book and online.
While Dr. Ganley's lectures are not the most interesting, they are very important. You can print out his lecture slides and fill in the blanks. He test your knowledge over the notes, the book has more info than you need to know. If you study everything in the slides and then take the practice exams you'll do fine. Also do the book problems.
He is one of the best, if not the best, chem teachers here. Whenever I have a question, he's very non-judgmental and is willing to help. Unlike Perry, he doesn't automatically assume you have a good chem background and explains everything well. He's not just a great professor, but a great guy. He's great, chem still sucks though.
Material is dry and boring, and he lectures via tegrity. Tests come from notes and book. Unless you can buy a lab manual, lab notebook, and online access code, you'll need the textbook bundle. Get a good lab partner and ask the TA questions. Lab is sometimes harder than it needs to be, but the TA usually helps clarify the material.

This guy really deserves a higher rating. Seriously, chemistry is such a hard subject and I feel like people hate the subject/do badly in it and blame it on him. Ganley is by far one of the best teachers I've had. He's always patient when explaining things and most importantly, doesn't assume you have a good chem background.
Ganley makes this class understandable, but not when it comes to exams. The exams, in my opinion, should be less on multiple choice and more on workout probs. Lots of studying, especially from the book, so get help from him if you can. He either curves grades or adjusts grading scales at the end, but I had to retake his class this fall.
Easy A. Read the book because it help
Not an understanding professor. Rude and hard to approach. Doesn't seem to care about his students. The first couple tests are reasonable the last couple seemed impossible. Very monotoned. A lot of work outside of class is needed. He is very sloppy and makes a lot of errors when doing problems in class which leads to confusion.
Go to class and office hours. Hardly anyone does this and he definitely knows who goes. It is a hard class and tests are hard, but he will go out of his way to help you if you make your presence known.
A hard class if you are not already versed in chem. Ganley takes little time to explain, and rather motors on with the help of the three lackeys shouting continual answers to him from the front row. Though he asks for questions repeatedly, if I had asked all I didn't get, we would still be in class. Tests are designed to trick you. Ganley is rough.
It's a challenging class, but if you stay on top of it and put in the effort that most students aren't wiling to do you can get an A. I advise going to office hours, study sessions, and finding motivated people to study with. Get points where you can because they add up. Don't wait the day of to do sapling hw and read your lab ahead of time.
I didn't have a good chem background, so I really liked Ganley. He spoke NOT ASSUMING you have a good chem background. He's really patient when you ask questions and really helped me out. He's great.
Overall pretty good teacher, he talked too fast and quiet at times. The multiple choice tests became increasingly difficult over the semester. Def do the problems in the book, the sapling ones, and his old exams (some questions were verbatim). The amount of work you put in, will reflect your grade in the class.
5 exams total. Drop 1. Each exam worth 100 points & you can also earn 100 points from online homework. Online homework will not be enough to even help you understand anything. If you only do the online homework you will fail the tests. First exam I did all the homework, re-watched every lecture, & worked every problem in the book and got a C-.
Lectures are dry but if you take good notes, do the homework, and work out the questions at the back of the chapter you will get at least a B on the exam. Very clear what to expect on each exam. I found I learned more from the book than lectures, but he is very fair at grading. Must be an independent learner. Hmwrk points count big, so do it.
He's good at explaining concepts, but goes so quickly through the slides that it's really hard to pay attention while writing things down. I found that I learned most of the information from the book. Definitely work all of the book problems before the tests, it helps a lot. Tests are just 25 MC so you can't miss more than 2 if you want an A.
Although easy going, he doesn't say enough. At points, homework was posted 2 days before it was due, without any announcement of doing so. Make sure to read the textbook, as he isn't going to cover a majority of the exam material in class.
Organic is hard on its own but Ganley makes it that much harder. Hard to pay attention in lectures, but he does use tegrity so that is nice. Tests are only 25 multiple choice so if you miss 3 you already have a B. Wouldn't recommend but I think he is the only one you can take.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD OF ALL PROFESSORS! He only makes class even more harder by making tougher exams and if you miss few enough, your grade goes down! Had to retake this class this semester but only improved to yet another mediocre grade, even by working on textbook problems, in which IMO aren't much helpful! STAY AWAY FROM HIM!
He is an okay professor. I had to teach my self for the most part, and I used his lecture as an outline. The whole semester I was borderline between an A- and B+. He barely curved, so I ended with a B+ and I'm still salty about it, I would recommend reading the book and doing practice problems
Ganley was fine, but he made organic chemistry more difficult to understand. I skipped quite a few of his lectures, read the book and was just fine. As long as you read the book and do a ton of practice problems you'll probably be ok. His tests are really difficult since they are only 25 multiple choice questions. Also, it's all just memorization.
Like many others, this class was a requirement for me. He is a bit boring, but teaches concepts well. He talks about "the curve" throughout the semester but DO NOT RELY ON IT. I had a 90 and he only gave like a 2 percent curve and I ended with a 92.4 A- that he refused to round up. Miss 2 on each test and your A is gone. Worst grading system ever
Great professor. Would recommend him over others. I know many kids in the other Chemistry classes that would actually come to Ganley's because he gives better lectures.
Ganley is a super nice guy, but he is very monotoned (not his fault). Hard to pay attention at 8 am. He tries to be helpful though.
I like Ganley. Chem is hard, so people sometimes take it out on the professor. If you put in a little effort though, it's really not that hard to get a B, or even close to an A. He's smart and helpful, especially in a big lecture hall. Take the notes, do the homework. It's fine.
Don't take organic 1 at the same time you take the lab (chem2130). Lol I had bad tests grades- 72, mid 50s, low 60s. Third test was in low 20s. HW is worth 100, try to get all the points. I went into the final with a 70 (with dropped test , got an 80 and ended with a B- it was at least 6% curve, for me at least. No curve till after final.
I've had Dr. Ganley for 1320, 2100, and 2110. Be prepared to study your butt off. The tests are difficult, but multiple choice (don't let that fool you into complacency). Make time to study the book as his lectures are basically a regurgitation of it with a few helpful hints along the way. The class is curved. Might be the hardest class I've had
Only test over whats taught. He goes really in-depth sometimes which leaves you lost but won't test over a majority of it. If you understand the practice test well you should do well on the test. There were a few Q's on each exam that were tricky, but most were fine. He talks really fast so I stopped going and understood things better on tegrity.
I understood the material by going to his lectures, though he does talk fast, so tegrity is helpful to go back. No EC even when only 20 other people there, so don't bother going before break. The third test is very difficult, but overall they're not bad. Don't buy the book. Practice problems and powerpoints are online and that's all I used it for.
One of the best professors I've had in my college career. What sets him apart from other professors in his department are his knowledge of the subject mattter, accessibility outside of class, and ability to field questions in lecture
Ganley was a great professor and made chemistry easy to understand. Grading is not complicated. Do the homework every week. You can miss two on the exam and still get 100%. If you're struggling, practice problems are a must. The ones at the end of each chapter are equal to the difficulty of the problems on the exam.
All of my friends failed all of the tests and so did I. He doesn't give study guides, tips, or practice tests so you go into test blind. He lectures straight from the text so I read the chapters to study and it doesn't help at all. Also doesn't do much to help you out with questions and concerns. Definitely the hardest class I've taken so far.
This was one of my hardest classes Ive ever taken. You need to show up to class, labs, and do your homework to even think about getting a decent grade. Tests are really hard. He is not helpful in office hours and makes you feel dumb. Drops lowest test grade which is nice. Most class averages for tests are around 40-65%. All around terrible class.
Ganley's class is 500 points: 400 from 4 out of 5 tests and 100 from online HW. You get to drop a test, which is amazing. The only problem is he's a bad teacher. He's monotonous and boring. You learn WHAT happens in organic chemistry but not WHY, which is annoying. All lectures are online, which is nice. Just study a lot and you'll do well.
Ganley moves fairly quickly through the material, but he explains it well. He posts his powerpoints on canvas and records all his lectures on tegrity, so it is easy to go back and review. In Chem 1100, the tests are pretty easy as long as you study.
Lecture material does not match exams at all. Horrible averages on every exam and non-relevant questions.
Ganley is one of the best profs I've had at MIZ. He has clear criteria on what should be on the exams as long as you pay attention in class. He is very willing to work with you outside of class and his office hours as long as you are putting in the effort. Huge plus: he's actually funny and nice. Listen in class and you'll get his subtle jokes. WIN
Tests are SUPER HARD and he makes it seem like they'll be easy with easy class notes/tegrity, tests over super specific nonimportant details and concepts instead of the important stuff. Went to his office hours after not doing too well on the last test and all he said was "know the powerpoints" which is not at all helpful because thats what i did.
Course went about as well as you would expect for your average organic chemistry class. The horror stories are true: exam averages were 72, 72, 62, 60, and 67. Curve at the end of the semester seems to favors people who did worse in the class. If youre really bad at doing practice problems on your own, youll struggle in this class.
Ganley is a nice guy. A lot of the negative reviews come from the difficulty of the class. Orgo is hard but ganley is very clear about expectations. I do admit that the test format is less favorable (25 mc worth 4 points each), but it is manageable. My advice is to read the book and do practice problems, you can't learn successfully otherwise.
A lot of people don't like Ganley, but I always have. Never went to class, just watched all of the tegrities. Everything he tests over is on tegrity. Never opened the book.
Don't know what most people are talking about. This guy is great! He makes chemistry very straightforward, and much more palatable. I would certainly take Dr. Ganley again. His grading is very fair.
Ganley is good. His lectures make me tired. Warning, though, do not study the lecture notes for the test. Focus on the textbook. Work through the problems at the end of the chapters. Do ALEKS before the day its due.
I was honestly expecting Dr. Ganley to be a terrible professor, but he actually wasn't at all! Chemistry here at Mizzou is hard and I took this course with a different professor before and it was really bad, but Dr. Ganley's tests are at least multiple choice although hard and he did a huge curve at the end of the semester that bumped my grade up.
I personally thought Dr. Ganley was a great professor. He made chem 1 relatively easy to comprehend. You could miss two questions on the test and still get 100%, which was nice. I just used the powerpoints to study and did well. I would definitely recommend him over other professors for gen. chem 1.
Dr. Ganley was positively outstanding. Chem 1320 is a huge lecture but Ganley was able to make it personal. Chemistry is hard and amount of content he has to cover is borderline excessive, however, that's not his fault because it is just a overview of a large topic.
Dr. Ganley knows what he's talking about, is very knowledgable. Grades were based on 5 exams (can drop 1). You need to read book and do problems at end of chapter. No points given to homework which is where I disagree with him. All other classes receive hw credit except summer class. Overall, you'll do well if you put in work (cliche but relevant).
Orgo is a hard class by nature, but Ganley makes his expectations very clear, and his exams don't have any surprises on them. He does move very quickly through lecture material, but they are all posted on Tegrity, and as long as you take notes, do the homeworks, and ask for help when you need it, his class is challenging but very doable.
He posts all his lectures online which is really great if you have an 8 am class. The homework assignments barely have anything to do with lecture but are easy. Offers extra credit and drops lowest test grade.
Pretty monotone, but not a bad professor by any means. Lectures are straightforward and helpful, but you really need to read the textbook to help it sink in; just a difficult subject. Posts all his lectures online, which is a godsend! Exams are fair, all multiple choice. Requires lots of studying, but definitely not an impossible class if you work.
Ganley is easily my favorite professor Ive ever had. He uses tegrity and you can drop one exam and 6 homeworks. Go to office hours for any help, he doesnt make you feel dumb for asking questions. His exams are very fair In regards to what he covers in lectures, but reviewing homework problems helps a lot too
Ganley was a great Orgo 1 professor, tests and material mirror the book (no having to hunt in Tegrity for discrepancies), and depending on how comfortable you are with the material you don't necessarily have to go class. Very approachable and my peers were able to contact and receive help from him and the TA on a frequent basis. Good stuff.
You don't need to show up to this class as long as you go back and take notes off his online lecture later. Ganley is a slow talker and boring but if you speed up the lecture you can get through it. He is a forgiving professor and always there if you need help. The TAs are also a more accessible option for help and a great study tool.
Ganley is honestly wonderful. I was a terrible Organic Chemistry II student, but he REALLY tried to help me understand. He worked with me every day of office hours and gave constructive feedback. His tests were difficult, but they weren't outside of expectations.
Great Chemistry teacher. Super organized, gets grading done quickly, always at office hours, answers emails promptly. Organic Chemistry is a tough class, but Dr Ganley teaches it well. He also makes himself available for extra help - there is usually a group in his office working problems during office hours. Good guy all around and very fair.
Organic chemistry is a tough course, and it is a professor that makes a tough class bearable or not. Lectures are boring, and information and images are taken straight from the textbook. There isn't any variation from the information in the book. All lectures are on Tegrity; coming to class isn't necessary. Tests are all multiple choice.
Lectures are key for his classes, am taking him again for orgo 2, and is a great professor. His teaching is at a good pace, gives fair exams, and keeps things interesting. Print out the notes and write on them.
If you need Organic chemistry TAKE IT WITH THIS MAN! Its a hard class no matter what, but he is largely available whenever and will help you work through problems and hint at what is on the exam. Study well before each test, I'm talking at least 10 days. Tests are multiple choice, he takes best 20 out of the 22 questions on all exams.
Organic is tough, but Dr Ganley makes it very doable. Go to lecture, or at least watch the videos to get tips on problems, and tips that will help you on exams. Exams are multiple choice but don't expect to cram and do ok. Go to TA exam reviews - very worth the time/effort). Super available for extra help - daily office hour. Solid guy.
This class was difficult, but doable. He teaches well, however at the end of the semester I ended with a 89.9 % and there was "nothing I could do" to get the extra one point, which is very frustrating since one of the grades was a pop quiz the first week of the semester on "things you should already know". Great teacher but don't expect niceness :(
Exams are easy if you study. Don't limit yourself to lectures. Reading the book is what got me my grade. My study advice is to start 4-5 days before exam. Look at notes, then read book chapters and do problems at end of each chapter. Homework is a non-issue. Can drop 1 exam. Reaction charts at end of each chapter are major key. Go to office hours.
His tests are super tough but can be prepared for by going over his lectures repeatedly and doing many practice problems. If you go to office hours you'll realize he is a great guy who loves what he does after he gets to know you. My best suggestion would be to rewrite the notes after each lecture to make sure it is understood & go to office hours
Had a really great time learning organic chemistry 2 from Dr. Ganley. His lectures are very clear and he records all of them so you can go back later and review material.
I did not need to go to his office hours but he is very accessible outside of class. it is nice he records his lectures so you can go back and rewatch them if you miss class. overall not a bad teacher. He is good at his job
You don't have to show up because he puts all of his lectures online. His tests are really hard, he picks the littlest details from the notes and puts it on there, not the main concepts you would think of. The class average was usually in the 60's, he does drop your lowest test grade which is helpful and the homework and labs help boost your grade.
He posts lectures online so attendance isn't mandatory, but it can help if you have extra questions. He has a question box in the back of the classroom to drop questions in in case you don't want to ask in front of the class. If you do the online homework assignments and study, it's fine. He posts sample tests that very similar to the actual exam.
Simply put--Dr. Ganley is an amazing professor. He is incredibly clear about what subject material will be on the exam. Additionally, he wants you to succeed. Go see him in office hours!! He will always help you until you fully understand the material!! Do not be intimidated by what you've heard!
Records all lectures and no in-class assignments so you do not need to go to class. Make sure you watch his videos if you do not. Tests mainly over notes. Drops lowest test, 10 extra credit points on tests and can use cheat sheet. Must do well in lab and ALEKS, TAs will help a lot, go to office hours. Good and nice professor. Usually curves class.
Ganley was an alright professor. His lectures were good because he gave you the foundation and also some good examples. Beware, you will be spending at least 5 hours a week on ALEKS. In the beginning, it was so difficult but it honestly got better towards the end of the semester. I hate chem and got an A-
Highly recommend taking Chem1320 with Ganley! His lectures can be rather boring, but everything is clear and understandable. Additionally - he is always ready to help outside of class and after lecture. Lectures are also posted via Panopto. ALEKs is a pain in the butt but Ganleys ALEKs deadlines are pretty fair.
He was a great Professor because his exams were always fair and his lectures were good! You don't have to go to class because all the lectures are recorded. The only thing I hated was the ALEKS it took way to much time.
Ganley understands his students and wants everyone to do well; I would encourage anyone taking chemistry to choose Ganley because he is very knowledgeable, and he makes the class at least a little more interesting.
Dr. Ganley was a great Chemistry professor and really helpful. He makes sure you really know the material and are prepared for exams. If you show up and do all the work you should pass no problem.
nice guy, posts lecture recordings so dont need to go to class, does a lot of example problems, 4 tests are pretty easy if you understand lectures-drop lowest & can miss 2 & still get 100 on all, online textbook-dont need to read, lab is fairly easy, online ALEKS homework is the most frustrating thing ever-takes forever & is harder than tests
He can be tough, but he wants you to succeed. If you put in the work it's not hard to do well.
if you take survey of organic chemistry with this professor hes incredibly hard and exams are unfair. The class average of our last exam was a 66. This was after our first exam when the avg was a 72, so naturally people studied a lot harder to do better, but its so hard that the *class average* was a D! Hes nice but his exams are impossible
Dr. Ganley understands that most of us are just taking the class as a required Gen-Ed. In lectures, he clearly outlines and explains the content In an in-depth way that is still easy to understand, even for those of us who aren't exactly Chem-oriented. Only downside was the homework as the assignment program he uses, ALEKS, can be hefty at times.
Second time taking this class and I highly recommend him. He breaks the topics down making it easier to understand the concepts and also helps ALOT in office hours if need further help understanding. Clear grading criteria and HIGHLY RECOMMEND him over other professors at Mizzou for this class!
Prof Ganley was a fair grader although many were upset with his stance on no partial credit. In his class we used a software called ALEKS in order to do homework and exams. The exams were incredibly difficult but could be prepared for through ALEKS practice questions. He's not unfair but he will make you work for your grade.
Ganley is always super understanding with grades and his exams are not too hard! Just pay attention in class.
Dr. Ganley is the best Chemistry teacher I had at mizzou. Organic chemistry will be hard regardless of the teacher, but Dr. Ganley presents the material in a way that makes it more digestible than average. Some test questions are about hyper specific topics covered so make sure to take note of those examples, and if nothing else, read the book
He is amazing! I took his General Chem 1 course as well as Survey of Organic Chem. Organic was all online due to Covid, and he made himself extremely available with tons of office hours for outside help. He wants you to succeed! Organic chemistry is a very difficult class, but he helps you out a lot. Best professor I have had so far!
Chem is going to be hard no matter what, but take it with Ganley if you can! He posted all of the lectures online, so I didn't have to go to class. The ALEKS homework questions were quite tedious, but YouTube tutorials help you understand if you're having trouble.
If you pay attention to lecture and stay caught up with Aleks homework, you will do just fine. Ganley is definitely a good choice for this class, he is decently thorough in lecture and Aleks topic review lectures. The tests are also through Aleks which is somewhat nice because you know exactly what to expect.
Ganley is a good professor. Orgo itself is hard to learn, let alone teach. I took it during covid & the zooms during the class time were not mandatory. Only complaint is that we had to watch lectures on our own then do practice problems in class which made it feel like 6 credit hours instead of 3 because you used time outside of class to do notes.
I took Dr. Ganley for my 1320 class fall of freshman year. The course itself is not hard, you just have to put the work and effort in. I recommend asking questions and watching informational videos if lectures and professors dont answer your question. Overall he is a nice and understanding professor. If you work hard, you should have no issue.
cares about students & wants to help, posts lectures then does practice problems on zoom & answers questions (no attendance pts), homework can be frustrating but get 30 tries, 5 multiple choice exams are hard but doable if study a lot & understand reactions & can drop 1 except last, organic chem is hard but he makes it possible to do well
Organic Chem isn't an easy class, but Ganley makes it bearable. Take as many of your chem courses with him as possible.
Ganleys the goat. I hated Chem 1 and 2 but Ganley single-handedly taught me how to work hard and get a good grade that I deserved. I took him for Orgo 1 and 2 and he is the reason I no longer despise chemistry.
I had Ganley for both organic chemistry 1 and 2. He has recorded lectures then the scheduled lectures are example problems about the lectures. This class is exam heavy, he will likely curve if the average is low. We also got to drop an exam. He really cares that people pass and wants people to ask questions. Promptly helps students that need help.
He is a good teacher with a lot of knowledge in the subject, occasionally the lectures can be a lot (never more than 35 mins tho) but his office hours completely make up for it. He is available more than any other teacher Ive ever had and he treats no question like a dumb question, will work on same concept 100 times with you until you get it.
He is a very nice and understanding profesor, he genuinely wants to see you do good and is very understanding about grade rounding. Really respect him and he tries to make class fun
You learn from ALEKS, not Ganley. ALEKS will take you hours to complete, and his lectures are just problem solving not contextual understanding.
Took his class for Chem2 and taking it for OChem1 in Spring. Lectures are prerecorded and class time used for going over how to do homework problems. Exams use questions from homework. Allows formula sheet for exams. 4 exams, drops lowest. Lab is easy if you have a good TA. Nate was a very good TA. VERY helpful. 300 enrolled, 35 students in LEC.
Dr. Ganley is one of the best professors I've had so far. Many people dread taking organic chemistry, but Dr. Ganley made the course actually fun and enjoyable, as well as the great TA we had at the time. He is always available outside of class and gives good help in office hours, should you decide to go.
Professor Ganley is great, the online lecture format and optional, without penalty, attendance is great for night owls or people who simply aren't ready to be up at 8 am. Prepare to study in this class or just be completely lost, there is a lot to learn.
After taking 4 semesters of chemistry at Mizzou, Ganley was 100% the best professor I have had. The issue with other chemistry professors is that they only care about their research and do not care about the success of their students. Ganley is a teaching professor and he cares about his students. He actually explains concepts clearly.
Professor Ganley is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I took organic chemistry from him. He is clear with his learning objectives, helpful with homework and understanding concepts. If you just listen to his lectures, do the homework, and do all the problems in the book for practice you are sure to have a passing grade. Very talented teacher
Teaches using the flipped lecture which is problematic for students like me who favor active learning. Does not gradually introduce topics or use easy examples for discussing topics like nomenclature as the first example. Does not curve under any circumstances. Too restrictive of grading scale.
I wish all my professors were Ganley. Live Love Ganley
If you want a professor who teaches Ganley is not the professor for you! While attending his "lectures" are flexible it is not mandatory and you have to watch his lectures outside of class as he only does a kahoot style game in class. Your time management skills need to be immaculate to be able to do well in his class.
Ganley as a person is awesome. He is very chill and has great responses to off topic questions. If you like in person learning, then this class is not for you. His "lectures" are just review over the notes, which can be helpful if you are struggling on the homework or didn't understand the video notes.
The classes are not mandatory and he only does iClicker in class. You need to watch his lecture videos outside of class which is great if you have a lot of free time and like to teach yourself all the material, but if you're like me and you need someone to actually teach it to you while you can ask questions, this class is gonna be hard. No curves.
He teaches this course with the flipped classroom approach, so you basically have to teach yourself the material. He sends out the panopto videos that he recorded in previous semesters then just works through practice problems in class. By far the worst grade I have gotten at Mizzou. Try to find a different professor. Half the class withdrew.
This class used a flipped classroom where majority of the learning was done through a program called Aleks and pre-recorded lectures. Class time was used to do practice problems. The lectures are only helpful for getting a better grasp at the concept but the tests come directly from Aleks. Your lowest test score is dropped(final included).
Lectures are online and the in person portion of class was just I clicker review questions not for attendance points. A decent amount of online work but it did not take much time and was easily accessible. Tests were fairly easy only 20 multiple choice questions.
Ganley is a clear and helpful professor; I recommend watching his recorded lectures, tgeb go to class for optional IClicker practice, put your best effort in labs, and complete/study the Aleks online homework problems and you will be successful. I would recommend to stay on top of your own learning though and ask questions when they come up!
i loved ganley!! his lectures are flipped, so i only ever went to class if i needed help with a concept from the chapter we were on. aleks takes time but is user friendly. tests are aleks questions and are 20 mc questions. overall not too hard, just study the aleks for the tests, show up to your lab and participate, and finish the aleks on time.
This man is amazing. As long as you watch the lecture videos and do your Aleks, you will be golden. The tests are super easy if you do these two things. Attendance isn't required, but I went as much as I could and it helped a ton. (Also I may be biased as a Chem major)
Ganley is the GOAT. If you are wondering if it's worth it to wait for a semester where you can get Ganley instead of Keller, the answer is YES. Please do yourself a favor: if you can take any class with Ganley instead of Keller, do it. Ganley's exams are as advertised. He does not try to trick you. If you study and do your work, you will get an A.
Dr. Ganley's class is very fairly graded, he is honest when saying that the tests are the exact set up as the homework, so just know as long as you grind out a lot of studying on ALEKS you will likely be do fine on the tests. My biggest advice is that as long as you do well on your homework and labs you will be fine.
Posted all of his lectures online, and class was just review of homework problems. Very easy to watch the lecture, do the homework, and get feedback quickly.
The in-person lectures are purely practice problems that correlate to the online lecture released the day before (ie. a flipped format), which I personally greatly appreciated. Also, in-person lectures aren't mandatory which was always nice in case I was sick or was running behind in the morning. He is knowledgeable and adds humor in lectures too!
As long as you do the ALEKS problems, you're set! The exams are all exactly like ALEKS
Only homework you get assigned is ALEKS which should be an easy 100 but there is just a lot of questions. Tests were mostly just questions from ALEKS so make sure you do that. Attendance isn't mandatory and you just do iclikcer the whole time which isn't for points but it really helps you understand material.
Dr. Ganley is a very good professor. Lectures are optional and he uses class time to go over the homework assignments. The lecture component of the class is online so you watch those on your own time. As long as you keep up with your homework assignments (ALEKS) you'll do fine in this class.
Ganley is an amazing professor. He uses ALEKS as a base for homework and tests, and I personally learned really well by using it. His grading criteria is clear and he gives you all the resources to succeed.
I know a lot of people don't like how Ganley does a flipped classroom but I find it awesome. He uses a software called Aleks which you have to spend kinda a lot of time on but he pulls questions from it for the exam. If you take your time and understand all the aleks problems this class is a breeze.
His class is flipped with it mostly being lectures online, and in person working through homework problems. ALEKS throughout the semester with 4 tests, and labs weekly.
His "in-person" courses are an absolute joke. "lecture" is 20 minutes of clicker questions and not explaining anything. He posts all his actual lectures online. The course shouldn't be labeled in-person. His lectures are useless anyway because he pulls all exam questions from ALEKS. I learned more from ALEKS than his lousy excuse for "teaching".
The class is still hard if you struggle with exams. Do all of your ALEKS because those are easy points and get a good TA. He was a funny dude and I would rather take him than other chem professors but it is still hard.
If you took chem in high school (even regular, not ap) and were decent at chem, you should breeze through this class. He is super helpful and the hw is infinite tries. (I had him in the fall). The exams are majority pulled hw questions and are so easy.
I love professor Ganley, he's funny and knows how to teach. Lectures are online, and in-person class is going over ALEKS problems that help with homework and exams. Exams are entirely based on ALEKS problems, so make sure to do those. Didn't use the textbook at all. Labs were a little hard and didn't make much sense half the time.
I liked the way he set up his class in a flipped lecture, but it puts a lot of the note taking effort on the students, which can be difficult if someone has a busy schedule. He lets you have a one-page sheet of paper on exams, and you can write whatever you want. Not the best teacher I've ever had, but definitely not the worst.
I loved Dr. Ganley! He knows his subject well and was super good at explaining things! I do wish lectures were not in the flipped style, but having him do homework problems in class made his exams even easier than they already were (based solely on homework problems, and you can have a cheat sheet). Take him for Chem 1320!
Great professor, answers questions and lectures are optional. You basically use one website and if you keep practicing then the exams are easy. Main information is given via pre-recorded lectures. Overall loved the class.
I would def make sure to get him for chem1320. He makes you watch all the lectures outside of class time on your own and just does iclicker practice problems in class, so you have to be very self-motivated to learn. His tests are also multiple choice, but only 20 questions so it can hurt your grade. He drops lowest test score.
ganley made orgo 1 so much easier than I expected it to be. he uses a flipped classroom, so make sure you watch the lectures before class to understand the in-class practice. grading is made up of tests (you drop your lowest score) and your online homework assignments (pretty easy if you know the material, and you have a long time to do them).
I really don't like the way his class is set up. It put a lot of pressure on me to teach myself. His online lectures don't really present the info the best. The whole class grade is based on exams and he pulls questions from the homework for the exams. Took a lot of time for me to learn and never did well because Im not the best test taker.
I had Dr. Ganley for Chem 1320,1330, and now 2100 and I loved him for all three! He is definitely better for Chem 1 and 2 but still really good for Orgo. All his exams are based off the homework so you can just study that for the exams. He does a flipped classroom so if you don't like that don't take his class
I took Ganley for 1320 and 2100 and I would take him again. I love this teaching style and he is so approachable and always willing to help.
Dr. Ganley seems like a nice person, however he is not the nicest when it comes to coursework. He does not budge on his "policies". A lot of people I know are not doing well and he truly does not care and thinks it is all our fault. his flipped style sucks and lectures are 50+min most of the time. Thankfully, I will get an A but only because myself
Dr. Ganley is an amazing professor. He has always had a strict outline of grading. He cares about teaching and helping you understand the principles of chemistry. He will really break things down for you if you go to his office hours. Please remember!! If you are terrible at taking quizzes, this class is not for you. Majority of the grade are tests
HATE his teaching style. Whole grade is based on the 5 exams and he refuses to curve or give extra credit. His exams have questions that are never talked about except once for maybe 7 seconds during a 60 minute lecture online. His iClicker questions in class are not comparable to exam questions. Almost did not pass the class bc of the exams.
Tests are hard and require you to study lots before the exam, but with lots and lots of nonstop practice questions, you will be fine. Do not listen to the other reviews the class is hard because it is organic chemistry but doable if you put in the work. This class is test heavy but again do the work and homework and understand it!!!!!
I had Dr. Ganley for Chem 1 and he has not changed. I hated his online lectures. he has a flipped classroom in which you do problems in class. make sure you do well on the first few exams, they only get harder. he really cares about chemistry but wants his students to understand the material. Overall I wish I could've had a different professor.
Flipped format class room that is not executed will. Very difficult exams that require a lot of studying to be semi-successful. Averages on exams were ~70, this can be seen in his previous course grades as well. The only positive is that the class grading scale is curved.
The reviews do not do justice for the teacher. Ganley teaches one of the hardest classes at Mizzou, it will not be easy. Comparing him to the other chemistry professors, he is one of the best. He even gives built-in extra credit for the exams. He is very approachable and thoroughly explains topics. He makes one of the hardest classes doable.
Doesnt teach
Cant learn using his online lectures. He sounds like hes actively trying to sound as monotone and boring as possible when doing these. The lectures are 30-50 minutes long but you will have to pause to write everything down so it takes a lot more than 30-50 minutes. 9-10 hours of chem recommended per week. If you do take, take less of other classes.
Chemistry is hard, but Dr. Ganley made it as easy to understand as possible. He does flipped classroom so you watch the lectures outside class. I went to office hours for a few hours a week and it showed via my test scores. He also quickly responded to any email I would send asking for help or clarification on content. 10/10 reccomend
Professor Ganley's CHEM1320 class is well-structured. The flipped format takes some getting used to, but the ALEKS practice problems and unstuckstudy ai make studying a breeze. Exams are fair - just stay on top of the material.
Everything is online
Attendance wasn't mandatory. Flipped classroom. Lectures were online, and he solved problems during lectures. ALEKS was weekly assignments but helped me understand the material better for the exams. Can drop one exam.
He's chill
aleks, aleks, aleks...
class structure is easy. Tests pulled from homework, which he goes over in the lectures. allowed an 8.5x11 inch sheet of paper both sides, of notes. do the homework and prepare a good cheat sheet, periodic table is given on tests. semester grade is based on homework completion by due dates and your 3 best test grades(out of 4 tests including final)
He posts lectures ahead of class and just practices problems in class, but attendance is not mandatory. It is a homework heavy course and drops your lowest test grade.
Dr. Ganley is a chill guy, but if you actually want to do well in this class, his lectures are a waste of time. My one recommendation that helped me through this class is watching Roxi Hulet on YouTube, just search the topic. You do not need to waste time on actually studying; a good cheat sheet is the key to this class. Take note, put it on sheet
big class so never talked to him. lowest of 4 exams is dropped, no quizzes. aleks (hw) is good practice (but takes long) and prepares you for exams. at end of year, your aleks chart is a grade which if you do the work boosts ur grade. lectures 3 times a week where he goes over aleks but doesn't take attendance so its optional.
This class is a flipped classroom, so the lectures are online and you go over questions in class. If you understand the lectures, I would not recommend going to class. Professor uses iClicker, and the questions are posted but if you don't go to class, you may not know the answers. The labs can be a bit tedious, but a good class.
This is my third year at Mizzou, and so far this is the hardest class I have ever taken. It is a flipped classroom, and the lectures take forever to finish. There are only four exams throughout the semester, and one is dropped including the final. Your grade is heavily dependent on exams. The exams are only twenty questions long.
I do not like how this class is formatted. Flipped classrooms do not work for every student but this was the only chemistry option. Only four exams but lots of homework and material. Do not recommend.
Lots of homework on Aleks the platform used for assignments. He was not clear on when things would be due, so sometimes you would have Aleks due every Friday and sometimes every other friday. Exams make up a majority of your grade. Online lectures.
You might as well call this an online course with the lack of effective in-person teaching, heavy reliance on the Aleks program, and the fact that you can skip every single one of Brian's monotonous lectures and still pass the class. Be prepared to teach yourself chemistry because this "flipped classroom" style is not a good way to teach.
There was a textbook for this class, but we didn't have to use it. Homework is worth 40% of your grade, and tests/final is worth the other 60%. We take three tests and one final, but he will drop the lowest one. He posts lectures online and then does only practice problems in class, so attendance is not mandatory. The videos are long but helpful.
Ganley is a super quick grader and you will have your exam grade by that same night. there is a lot of content but if you keep up it really isn't that bad. class and online lectures are opptional. search up roxi on youtube for each aleks problem and you are good. work hard bc ur final can be dropped and you dont have to show
Would recommend! All grades are done through ALEKS and 4 exams. ALEKS is easy to navigate, and you can find example problems easily. You get a cheat sheet on the exams, and your lowest exam score is dropped. Lectures are not required, but by going you can see some good examples! Study hard and you will succeed!
make sure you complete all the ALEKS and study for the test, you get a cheat sheet every exam and one test is dropped.
Homework can definitely be stressful, but Ganley will work with you and reply to questions!
Really great professor. Attendance was optional, most of the learning was done through videos. He gives you a full page cheat sheet for each exam, all multiple choice exams, and lowest exam grade is dropped. 100 points for exams (3 counted) and 200 points for homework, which is easy to score well on, just takes a while to complete.
The class is a flipped classroom, so all that happens during the lectures is that he goes over practice problems with iClicker. You learn the material through the videos, but it is also pretty easy to learn through Aleks just by doing the homework. If you took a chemistry class in high school, and did well you will be pretty well off.
Ganley is very easy. There are 4 tests including the final and you can drop one of them. He uses the flip style class model, meaning he posts the lectures online for you to watch and then just goes through examples during the actual class time. Super easy class. The tests are just problems from Alex (the hw program).
Dr. Ganley is a great professor. The class is not overly challenging, as you are able to drop one exam. Exams questions are taken directly from the homework, and you get a cheat sheet. Great class, great professor. If you can, try to take chemistry with Ganley.
His lectures are not necessary to attend if you understand what you are learning. You are expected to watch his videos outside of class and learn the material that way. His lectures only go over questions from the homework. He lets you have one dropped exam which can be the final. His exam questions are pulled directly from the homework as well.
Dr. Ganley was an amazing professor and I definitely recommend him to anyone who needs to take Chem 1400 (in the fall) or Chem 1410 (in the spring). Attendance isn't required, since he just reviews over the homework and does practice problems for everyone. This course is based on mainly two things : exams + homework. He also drops your lowest exam!
Very good professor. Lectures aren't mandatory, but he goes over all the homework topics and possible homework/exam questions, so it is super helpful to go to class. All exam questions are things you go over during class, are on the homeworks, and you get a formula sheet. Overall great professor.
I've had him in two different chem classes. His teaching style really works for me personally and I really enjoy his classes. I'm not really a visual or audio learner, I tend to learn by doing and he gives plenty of opportunity for that without having to stress about doing poorly and affecting your grade.
The class is a flipped class. All he does during the class time is go over practice problems. If you took chemistry in high school and did well, you'll have an easy time.
Ganley is the best chemistry professor you can have!
Clear grading criteria
Attending his class is a waste of time. Lectures are not lectures but practice problem sessions. I would recommend chugging practice problems. This is a rare example of material taught by a professor rather than a professor teaching material.
Love the structure
Ganley is very very clear with his expectations. You have 4 tests (1 dropped no matter what). Points for completing the online homework on time, and then points for completing "Pie" by the end of the semester. Pie is basically like review and mastery of the homework questions. Overall not too bad.
Used the flip classroom structure, which wasn't really for me but Ganley was overall good. Allowed 1 dropped exam out of the total 4 exams and was homework was easy to complete and to get points back at the end of the semester.
I am not a fan. Goes through material very fast.
He uses a flipped classroom style, attendance for lecture is not required and he only goes over practice problems. The homework is vigorous, make sure you pay attention to the deadlines. Ganley himself is nice and good at explaining things, it is only the way the class is structured that is difficult.
He bases EVERYTHING on ALEKS, except the online lectures(skip them btw). Tests are ALEKS questions, so write your processes down on the sheet you get. ALEKS itself is frustrating at best, and torturous at worst, but he goes over everything in class. I feel like I haven't learned anything from this course, except how much I vehemently hate ALEKS.
Can't ask for much more in a chemistry professor/class. I just took both 1400 and then 1410 w/ Ganley, and without a doubt the best case scenario for a chem professor at Mizzou. Grades are just homework and tests, the tests are literally just homework problems. If you put effort into this class and study homework consistently, an A is very doable.
Dr. Ganley is a good professor who does care about his students, but his online lectures are very bland and hard to learn from. He pulls questions directly from the homework problem sets. He drops your lowest test grade in the class and allows you to drop the final. Overall, not a bad class, and his tests were not too bad.
You don't have to go to class. Roxi Hulet on YT is your best friend; she explains every Aleks hw problem. One test gets dropped. DO YOUR ALEKS HW!!! It's worth a huge part of your grade. Ganley is a chill guy and will answer questions if needed. I never went to lecture and I was just fine in his class
Lectures were not mandatory but offered great practice problems. Exams are easy if you fully UNDERSTAND the material. This means truly understanding the mechanisms behind the chemical reactions. It isn't an easy class, but he gives you all the tools, you just have to learn to use them.
Ganley's class is extremely easy to manage. Tests are decently spread out and there is a lot of time to prepare. Attendance is not mandatory, but extremely helpful if you are struggling. Had him for both Gen Chem 1 and 2. If you have the option to have him as a professor please take it!
I love Dr. Ganley. I really enjoy his chem lectures, and he responds to emails quick I didn't ever go to class, because it's optional, but the flipped classroom model gives you all of the information you need. If you do the homework, you will get an A, easily. Test questions are the same as homework questions (just different #s).
Dr. Ganely is funny lowkey. The lecture class for gen chem is super easy and straight forward (I'm just not good at chem) but the lab portion genuinely made me miserable. Exams are in-person and just the questions discussed in class. Homework isn't too time consuming.
Going to lecture isn't required which is cool. its not a hard class but the dude just doesn't teach. I go to lecture and he instantly goes straight into doing practice problems. You kinda have to teach yourself everything and figure it out on your own. Labs are unnecessarily complex and don't really add anything to the class. Its a very meh class.
weekly homework on aleks, which means little to nothing. exams are the only things that matter. only 5 assignments in the gradebook at the end of the semester, 4 of them being exams and 1 being the overall completion of homework. if you are not an amazing test taker, you cannot get an A in this class.
he is a good guy but the class is kinda insufferable. lectures are online and attendance isnt mandatory, it just feels exhausting. lab is the WORST. tests are pretty easy if you study/go off the homework. cheat sheet allowed which helps. lab just sucks A LOT.
the online text book is NOT required. he says it is but we never used it even once. i opted out of it and it has been 100% fine, save your money.
Ganley's course is SO manageable. People complain because they expect to get by w/o studying. He goes over HW in class, and also opens up the room for questions if needed on each topic. The exams are the homework questions, so if you practice those, you should be fine! However, labs are so awful because of the TA's with sticks up their behind...
This class is easy and the people who complain are lazy. All lectures are recorded and attendance is not required, however you get 15 bonus points for attending 60% of lectures (lectures are just going over homework). Super easy if you have prior chem knowledge, but also if you don't just watch the lectures and do the homework and you'll be good.
just awful. he can't be bothered with anything. ur final grade is composed of 4 exams and basically one semester long homework assignment. exams are 60% of ur grade and are only 20 questions long, so u can't get more than 5 wrong per exam if u want to get an A in this class. gross
Use Roxy on YouTube. She explains everything on Aleks. Tests are Aleks problems
This class was probably one of the easiest classes that I will take in college. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you get bonus points for showing up. Lectures are online and in class Dr. Ganley does homework problems. If you have any prior chem knowledge, you will not need to watch the lectures. Also, you get to drop 1 exam. Very manageable class.
Dr. Ganley does not teach. The class is just iClicker questions from ALEKS while you figure everything out on your own. The lectures might as well be optional. He leaves everything to incompetent TAs and gives no guidance. His office hours are a joke too. Exams are easy, but that's the only redeeming part. Total waste of time and tuition.
He records lectures and posts them on canvas, then just goes over practice problems in class. Your lowest test score is dropped, you get a full page cheat sheet on the tests, and you get unlimited attempts on the homework so really the hardest part of the class is just remembering to watch the videos.
He's really smart, but if you ask him questions deeper than the content goes even outside of class he doesnt super like to answer them which kinda sucks. there are only 6 things in canvas, and if you attend 60% < of lectures you get 15 points of ec.
If you have previous chemistry knowledge and can learn things on your own, he's easy and his tests are pretty easy. If you don't know anything about chemistry and need a lot of support from a professor, don't take him. But you do get bonus points for showing up to the lectures 60% of the time and he is good about answering questions in class.
Great professor, but don't go into tests without at least a couple of hours of prep, lock in for the first 3 exams so you can fade the final if you're happy with your grade
