Very frustrating teacher who is unwilling to help when asked questions or see multiple sides of an issue. Its either his way or no way Grading is also unclear and hard.
Dr. Gibbens is a nice person from the onset. However, as the course continues one realizes that he has a few issues. 1) "How he envisions" an answer is the only way that you can answer and get points. 2) He uses a hardline approach to steal points from his students. It is beginning to feel like he is on a power trip. Generally speaking, stay away.
In Dr. Gibbens class, if you don't have the exact answer he wants, too bad. The other rater put it nicely, he envisions answers but gives no clear guide lines for what he wants them to be. The class has extra credit so if you take him it's not a big deal and you should still be fine. Dr. Mosser is good so it is a nice balance
Gibbens is a good professor. Lecture sometimes seems to drag on and it is difficult for him to make difficult subjects in class easier because of death by powerpoint. Other than that his test are fair, every once in a while a question may be worded weirdly leading to being interpreted different by students. Explain cloning and transforming better!
I think the class was quite hard in terms of the amount of the team work required, but Professor Gibbens was quite helpful in answering my questions. I don't have any problem as described by other reviewers. I even got some points back for one exam after talking to him about my reasons. He seemed pretty reasonable to me.
Intelligent guy but very scatterbrained. It seemed like that on tests he said there could be multiple answers but would have a direction in his mind that wasn't neccessarily stated in the question.
You will love him the first lecture, and then with every passing day you will hate him more and more. He has a big ego and is decently unfair in his grading.
Very mixed feelings amongst different students toward Dr. Gibbens. Finished Foundations I with him last spring, taking II with him currently. I have always found him to be a good instructor, very willing to help students and definitely passionate about the subject. Not an easy class, but put in the hours and you can get an A.
Brian writes very hard exams and is a difficult grader. However, if you are having trouble, see him during office hours. He will give you good tips for answering exam questions and tell you helpful ways to study for LRQs.
He is a terrible person and enjoys seeing people fail, as it gives him an opportunity to correct them/make them feel stupid. His ego is too big and he really isnt that great of a prof. avoid him if possible.
After taking Foundations 1 I really didn't want to take Gibbens for Foundations 2. However, I'm glad I did. There are no online tests which were terrible and his tests became a lot clearer. He provided practice tests which are very similar to the actual test. He is very energetic and clearly loves what he teaches. He doesn't hesitate to help also.
Professor Gibbens expected high quality work on class projects and gave difficult tests almost entirely based on his PowerPoint lecture material. Book reading should be supplemental to his lecture slides. He's funny and easy to approach, and is passionate and knowledgeable about Biology. Lecture can get boring, but pay attention.
Professor Gibbens is a fantastic lecturer! He is clearly excited about what he is teaching and I think I learned more because of that. He loves biology puns so look forward to those! He has high expectations but never expects you to read his mind. Ask him questions! He will answer with more than you ever needed to know! Tip: Review his powerpoints!
Dr. Gibbens is a great teacher, one of the better biology profs I have had. His exams are very difficult and I would HIGHLY recommend going over his powerpoint notes when studying for exams. Reading and taking notes from the textbook is a MUST. Do not expect to get a good grade by slacking.
The "lectures" don't teach the students anything. It's purely to do group work on a couple questions that have minimal relation to what's being studied. You're essentially teaching yourself biology by reading a textbook, because he's not teaching.
Dr. Gibbens is a great professor who is always willing to make the time to help his students! He clearly enjoys teaching and is really passionate about biology. Yes, his exams can be hard, but if you pay attention in class, he does mention what material will be on the tests.
Professor Gibbens is not doing this for the students. Giving vague lectures that have little or nothing to do with the mass amount of group work done in the class, teaching information that won't be on the test, or simply going against what textbooks teach, he is an overall unhelpful professor that does not have his students' futures in mind.
Brian Gibbens Ph. D comes across as very superficial and big on himself. He puts up a facade of caring about students, but it feels like he thinks that's what 'good teachers' do and he wants to be a 'good teacher'. The class content was acceptable. Feedback is lengthy, but not very informative.
DISORGANIZED CLASS. You'll potentially have piggy backers in your group projects and of which there are SO MANY. Not fun at all, tests are often vaguely worded and so are the lectures.
The class is poorly organized and a complete waste of time. Anyone who enjoys learning about biology should take a different class as the majority of time in the class is spent on group projects and the lectures are on random topics that have little to do with any career except biology research. Learning comes from reading the textbook, not class.
Where to begin. There is SO MUCH busywork in this course, and you are tested on his "lectures" where he doesn't teach you anything and doesn't go over answers. They expect more on tests than they ask for. He enjoys making your life difficult. And metacognitions. You have to reflect on the same questions almost every week and it's terrible.
Brian Gibbens PhD is one of the least professional and least helpful professors you could ever ask for. He is an extremely tough grader and provides little explanation for the points he takes off. His attitude towards his students is one of superiority and he DOES NOT care about the students. Tests are based on his poorly designed "lectures."
He aight. He obviously works really hard and he really does know his stuff. During the LRQ portion, he did an excellent job of articulating why certain answers were correct. He can be a bit condescending at time and the big exams suck. All in all though, I plan on taking him for 2003.
This class is extremely interactive. If you are not an independent learner, you better learn to be. If you get into the course, it's really fun. Brian is very passionate, but can be condescending. He definitely knows what he's talking about and provides many personal experiences to enhance learning.
Brian is not the best biology instructor I've had. He has this facade of caring about his students and wanting them to succeed, but doesn't actually care that much. His tests are challenging, and good luck if a question is tricky and has multiple answers. He will only give credit for similar answers if a large majority of the class struggled.
Be prepared to not be taught much & not be given answers to questions when you ask. You'll spend excessive time doing busy work. He is also very disorganized (what he says, the syllabus, and what the assignment calls for may all be different). He's a nice guy but extremely unhelpful in teaching biology and gives tons of useless busy work
He does not care about the individual. He focuses too much on the projects in class than individual learning.
He makes the exams pretty challenging and assigns useless group work that he claims will "help you in your future endeavors." You're basically expected to teach yourself from the textbook and apply it. His class is barely about biology and more about learning to work in a group and suffer through difficult tests.
He tries to be funny and make class fun, but it doesn't really always work. As a person he is great, but I didn't love him as a professor because of all the work he gave us and the tough tests.
He doesn't explain the material often, so you have to learn most of it from the book. Nice guy, but very difficult. Difficult too do well on his sections of the tests.
Professor Gibbens is a nice guy and he's always willing to help if you go to him with questions. Not much material is covered in class, so you have to learn most of it on your own. Some questions on the quiz can be misleading, but he's usually open to discussion about them. He can be kind of condescending in his feedback on group projects.
Professor Gibbens was a tough grader. Pay attention to his presentations during class because that's what will be on your exam! He does give you the powerpoints which is extremely helpful. Beware, he can be very condescending if you ask a question. Make sure you read the textbook before his quizzes because the questions are very detailed!
Brian is such a nice guy and he lectures with passion and excitement. His lecture powers points are filled with wonderful notes and pictures! He gives the classroom a happy atmosphere and he makes me smile. He is much better than Peter.
Dr. Brian Gibbens is not a terrible professor. However, he clearly is not in academia for the right reasons. Students ask him honest questions, and do not get straightforward answers. He is good at lecturing and loves to speak, but expects students to know an excessive amount of background info. I did okay in the class, but hated his arrogance.
Dr. Gibbens is really nice, provides fantastic feedback (I have become a much better biologist), and is always willing to help out students. Students often describe him as condescending and I have not found that to be the case. I have enjoyed my time in class with him and would pick him again if I had the choice.
Super nice guy. Plays music before class. Energetic. Passionate about biology. Cares about students and their understanding of the material. Throws in occasional current events/discoveries/news about biology. Able to effectively communicate his knowledge to students. Can get off topic, but still does a good job of lecturing.
Dr. Gibbens is great. He is very passionate about biology and definitely ties to help you learn the material well. He really does set you up for success so just study everything he teaches you and you'll be fine.
Brian is really approachable and is very good at answering any questions you may have. He taught the GCD side of Foundations I, but I found myself sometimes having to teach myself the material since some of the in-class activities he had were unclear. His tests are more specific and more short-answer based. I'm unsure whether I'd take him again.
The most helpful, can go to him w questions w/o feeling dumb. Passionate about teaching, breaks down topics well, powerpoints are informative (& funny), if you download student version there's "speaker notes" that give more info. Fair grader, can go talk to him about stuff if you have grading qs. Second sem taking him, would recommend.
Professor Gibbens is a great teacher, and he really cares about how you do in the class. He is very passionate about teaching and biology in general. His tests are very difficult, he throws in a lot of nit picky details
Brian gets a bad rep from being somewhat over-enthusiastic now and then, but he is overall a great professor who cares very much about his students and is VERY willing to work with them to help them understand what they did right and what they did wrong. The structure of foundations sucks, but Brian's portion is very straightforward.
By far T H E W O R S T professor I have EVER had. So incredibly condescending and rude. Useless projects and homework. So much reading, and ALL the learning was done outside of the classroom. He assigned a HUGE group project that lasted the entire semester and causes so much unnecessary anxiety. I write this as a sincere warning....
WORST PROF EVER. Does not care at all about his students. Uses his lecture time for pointless information about random scientists and stuff no one cares about. Be prepared to memorize the textbook and write it down word for word on exams. Unless you want to cry every night and be stressed, dont take this class!!!!!
Switch out of this class if you can. He is condescending and only pretends he cares about his students. The tests arent that related to the quizzes and are extremely difficult. This class was definitely a GPA dropper.
He is okay but the final is hard.
He is very condescending and will rarely answer your questions in a useful way and might even walk away while you're still talking to him, even on the project that is worth a ridiculous amount of points. His tests rely heavily on textbook information and the grading is highly specific to the textbook as well. Maybe just don't take the class.
Overall a decent professor. Lectures were fairly clear. The overall class has many flaws due to how its set up, and not entirely the professors fault. Sometimes feedback would be given, and then when asked again the response would be different.
Brian was an okay prof. Not terrible, not fantastic. His quizzes are pretty easy (read book), but his tests are pretty hard. He changes his answer to the same question on a daily basis, so a solid answer is almost never given. This can be especially frustrating when completing the group project that is worth 40% of your grade.
Gibbens is knowledgeable and it always willing to help with the GMO project. He always answered questions, but sometimes made them more complicated in the process. His weeks of the class are definitely the harder ones but he's really great at explaining and always willing to help if needed. Overall, he's a pretty good choice for foundations.
Brian was a great guy. Lots of small points and group projects. Very caring and helpful, tests were a little tricky, mixed in with reproducing diagrams straight from previous tests/powerpoints. I'll let you in on a little secret, he has FAT stackaroos of candy in his office, go visit him.

Dr. Gibbens was much more lenient in the second semester of foundations compared to the first. He made his tests much easier by explaining what would be on them and including questions from the practice test on the real tests. You can tell he really enjoys his job and is quite humorous. He is pretty picky on the long term projects but overall great
Gibbens is a very caring professor. In the second semester of foundations, tests were easier. Pay attention during lecture and study his powerpoints. Quizzes are based off of the assigned readings, tests are from lectures and quizzes. His expectations for quizzes and exams are clear of what you need to know, but you have to work for a good grade.
Look Brian is a nice dude but this guy is picky. Especially during the GMO project, it really seems like he doesn't exactly know what he wants because it seems that the rubric changes as you make your project. Everything is graded in a super odd way and the class feels like it sets students against each other. You will be nailed for trivial things.
You can really tell that Gibbens knows and cares about the stuff he teaches. He is good about answering his emails, but he is super picky. His LRQ and exam questions are really hard. He also takes off random points for the GMO project for things he does not like or are a matter of opinion. The best way to do well is to bombard him with questions.
Gibbens is a really nice guy and was always willing to answer questions. He worked really closely with my group throughout the GMO project (we had a TON of questions) yet he still took quite a few points off on the final project... Even on things HE told us to do. He's very nitpicky but is a good teacher and is very passionate about what he does.
Dr. Gibbens is very passionate about teaching, and he is easy to approach for questions, to which he gives thorough responses. He responds to emails immediately which is super helpful, especially after moving online. His material is difficult, but pretty straight forward. Studying the in-class activity and notes will help with his test questions.
Dr. Gibbens is one of the most caring professors I have ever had. He truly wants all of his students to succeed, and he is always making jokes and always smiling. He truly has a passion for teaching, and this makes his class so much more enjoyable. It is a little difficult, but that is the nature of the class. There is a decent amount of work.
DONT TAKE HIS ONLINE BIO CLASS! All learning and note-taking are through the textbook so no lectures or slides. To top it off you have an endless amount of assignments and quizzes that are due every week so you don't really get the chance to fully teach yourself the material. Honestly worst class I have ever taken! Save yourself the time and stress
I love Dr. GIbbens! He grades tough but he wants you to do well. He always responds quickly to emails and makes class fun. The material isn't easy but he makes it extremely clear what he expects you to know for the exams. Weekly quizzes are super easy. This was my 2nd semester w/ him and you can't go wrong with him as your Foundations professor!
By far my favorite professor last semester. He was funny and was really engaging. He was also pretty lenient on grading tests, but really strict on grading the group project. Although there were pretty clear guidelines and he was always willing to give feedback.
Gibbens is really passionate about biology, which made his lectures intriguing because he wanted his students to be just as interested in the course material. However, attend lectures!! A lot of quiz and exam content is on stuff that isn't necessarily in the reading. Quizzes are based on self teaching, so READ. In-class activities are CRUCIAL.
Extremely passive aggressive and vague. He always pointed out the issues in assignments but would not elaborate on what could be done to improve them. He always contradicted himself and talked in circles when my team asked him questions, especially with the LTP. He would ask for a general idea but then demand specificity and vice-versa.
Gibbens teaching style requires the student to teach themselves more than he teaches them. Additionally, be prepared to study as Gibbens's tests and quizzes were notably harder than Kennedy's (the other professor). Additionally, pray that you get a good group because that will pretty much determine the entire semester for you.
Strict with deadlines (late work won't be graded). Didn't give much in way of preparing for exams. Gave extra credit opportunities and exam retakes though, and listened to student feedback and was understanding in regards to student struggles on assignments and exams. TAs for this course were great.
Took remote. An average week consisted an overview video (10 min.), textbook assignment (~1 hr), 10 question team homework and a 10 question quiz. Overall, prof. was strongly reliant on the TA's and LA to respond to any emails or questions. The exam was oddly specific, especially for being an intro course. On average I spent 30 hrs on course work.
1 group assignment per week, all done through discussion boards. Lots of small assignments to make up points if you do bad on exams. TAs were amazing! Took a lot of student feedback which was nice and changed due dates/changed things. Allowed retakes if we all did bad. Practice exams sucked though & didn't relate to the content. Not too bad overall
Professor Gibbens was a great teacher to have, especially for an online Biology course. He was kind and wanted students to learn. He posted weekly mini-lectures that weren't required but covered all the important takeaways from the book. Exams were easy, and he allowed retakes for both. If you have any common sense, you can easily pass this class.
Awesome bio professor, is very passionate about the evolutionary concepts. the class is difficult but as long as you're interested in the material you'll be motivated enough to study adequately. he is willing to set up appointments outside of class and office hours. make sure to do the readings and take good notes.
He is good at explaining. Biology is also taught as a joint class with two professors. In general, I preferred his lectures a lot more and he was helpful with the final project. The tests are difficult though, but that could have been the other professors influence.
The sheer amount of work in this class was astronomical. It equated to about an average of 20 hours per week for 4 credits. When the class submitted suggestions on improvement, the response was overwhelming. 80% of the class reviewed there being far too much work. Gibbens responded that this was in our error for not properly managing our time.
Professor Gibbens is super passionate about biology and really cares about his students! His assignments are not bad at all and the in-class tests are way better than the take-home tests I've heard about in other Foundations of Biology courses. He makes biology very approachable and fun!
Teaching style is hard to understand, but harder to understand by the assistant professor. Once offered a quiz without even going over the lecture content, while having an exam the day before and also not going over the content. Class revolves around team work the whole semester. I would not recommend this class.
He tries very hard to make the class interesting and engaging. There is a lot of work in the class but, I feel most of it has purpose engaging students into Biology. He is very respectful of students with disabilities and will work with students outside of class.
I have a junior with a 4.0 and I just failed the first exam. DO NOT TAKE THE ONLINE CLASS! Labs are pointless, so much group work that determines a lot of your grade, way too many assignments. The exam overviews are terrible. Way too much for one class with little instruction and a bad setup.
I do like the professor, professor Gibbens, but the TAs weren't the best at doing their job. I didn't like that we had two different places to complete a lab: on SimuText and on CANVAS. The labs did seem very pointless and I didn't learn much. My advice, anything that has to do with LABS or SCIENCE TAKE IN PERSON!
I enjoy Gibbens as a person but I know that lots of people struggled in his section of the class. He covers dense stuff, so if you aren't already familiar with it you'll have your work cut out for you. A lot of brute memorization is required so make sure you study for tests and quizzes. Also, like Foundations 1 this class is super group-focused.
I think Brian is a good guy overall, but his grading is very nitpicky and the class is very heavily centered around group work. I think its more how the class is designed than it is his doing, but its very difficult to get an A in the course unless you do well on both exams and the GMO Project. That said the averages for both exams were 68% and 54%
You can definitely tell Brain knows what he's talking about and he has a true passion for Biology by the way he talks about it. You can tell he's well experienced although can be a little difficult to reach as far as office hours goes.
I would best describe his teaching style as lazy and frankly a mess. Most of the learning was from the textbook. There was a quiz on the material about 1/4 of the way into the lecture. Lecture really did not focus much on the material it was base level, so much of the lecture veered off into odd in class activities.
Very enthusiastic
If you have the opportunity to take foundation with Professor Gibbens, I think you should take it. He has been by far my favorite foundations professor so far. He is gives very interactive and easy to follow lectures, that prepare you well for exams and quizzes.
If you have the chance to take foundation with professor gibbens you should take it. He gives very interactive and easy to follow lectures. I thought they prepare you very well for all exams and quizzes without needing too much extra time outside class to understand material. You can tell he loves to teach.
VERY picky grader, he will not tell you something is required, but will doc points for it not being present. He's an okay professor. Get ready for quizzes every Monday 1/2 way through the lecture; if you do well on those, you'll do well in the class overall. If you slack off and don't do well on the quizzes, you will not get an A.
He is an amazing lecturer and tests were very fair. Highly recommend!
DO ALL EXTRA CREDIT ~2.5% grade boost. Gibbens is a great lecturer & very interactive. Group project worth 25% of grade (peer eval important). Hope you have a good group otherwise it'll be awful sem. Weekly Monday quizzes mid lecture, some questions are common sense but still do readings. Exams aren't bad. Taught with Furniss, hes better professor.
He appears rather friendly on the outside, but in fact, he is dark and lacks kindness at heart. Even with limited authority, one may still increase the burden on others through procedural or detailed means, making the work unnecessarily complicated and difficult.
Gibbens was a great professor and offered a lot of help inside and outside of the class. The class had three exams and a group project. They offered a lot of in-class activities, as well as study guides, that can help prepare you for the exams. I would recommend Gibbens if you had to take him as a professor.
