Helpful but he's human
Not the microphone!! otherwise good
effective teaching style
keeps u on your toes; encourages active learning
Structured teaching style, to the point.
Funny; Unique teaching style, but effective
very easy to understand! great teacher
great prof. humourous, effective, makes you want to learn
Excellent professor, amazing teaching skills
Best prof I've had at UBC! Funny, effective, and interesting!
Excellent prof! Lectures are NEVER boring! Fair midterms...
One of the best
Well articulated. Hard exams. Demanding.
Very good prof, one of the best u can have in commerce!!! Very funny man!!!
Excellent step-by-step teaching skills....very effective!!!!!
clear teaching, fair exams, funny... can't ask for more
Great sense of Humor!
funny and effective teaching style. beware of the mic
Nice Guy. But scary.....
Very clear in lectures, but his online notes don't work too well when studying
Great Teaching Style
FUnny...very FUnny...
excellent teacher, very clear, lectures interesting.
good teaching skills
A lil intimidating, but a great prof. Funny, clear, knows how to teach his stuff
He rocks! Funny as hell too
funny guy, just hide the mic
Awesome teacher!
He's a fantastic teacher - by far the best prof, in any faculty, that I've had in 2 years at UBC. He wants all his students to do well, and he works extremely hard to ensure that everyone does the best that they can.
Best in the faculty, actually makes Commerce palatable, and dare I say fun! Microphone is evil (I suffered supreme embarrassment from it) but definitely keeps you awake and learning.

Makes class interesting, clear explainations, respects students, fair in grading, exam difficulty is very reasonable
Interesting prof, good explaination, makes students wanna go to class
The best prof. one can get. Extremely clear explanations and demonstrates care for students.
very good! caring
Super funny and nice prof. Fun class :D
Extremely wonderful prof. The Best professor in Commerce. Super fair.
he is ****, but a good professor
Good explantions, he puts a lot of effort into his classes. Always available if you need help, even if he is kind of a jerk.
Super-dee-duper prepardness at its best! Makes a dull course freakishly interesting. Can a be a big doof/jerk sometimes but overall very clear in his explanations. As an added bonus, his computer guy is super cute ^.^

Great teacher!
nice guy. funny entertaining informative.... make sure you remember his bruce lee impression for the final:S
no that helpful and a bit unpolite.
Really good lectures and really helpful in office hours
No Comments
Clear lecture and notes but TERRIBLE midterms and finals, he's MEAN and shows no mercy to students! I hate him, i hate him!!!...did i mention that i hate him? He ruined my second year GPA totally!
He's extremely friendly and approachable, even if he doesn't remember your name (due to his big class size)!
interesting class
good prof, but very intimidating... walks around handing students a microphone and asks them questions which they have to answer in front of 200+ ppl...hard exams
Awesome prof. Definitely the most approachable and interested in his students' success in the department. The wandering microphone makes you quick on your feet - and that's important.
One of the best profs in commerce! He's makes the material easy to understand. If you go to class, you won't even have to crack open a textbook.
He should be more friendly to his students...
BRIAN IS SIMPLY THE BEST
A typical self-absorbed, angry commerce prof from my viewpoint. though it is surely difficult to teach large classes, and teach them how to use excel.. i think he could do a lot better. then again, im thoroughly unimpressed by the entire commerce department.
very arrogant, always telling stories about himself, no one cares about your life graham, lectures are boring, but hes the only teacher that teaches a required course so theres not much you can do about it
I didn't want to give him 5s on everything, but his course is easy, he's very helpful, and he's very clear. I'd only deduct marks because he goes off topic so much and talks about irrelevant stuff, but he's just trying to help us understand and make a boring course at least a little interesting.
Very funny, but sometimes are also sarcastic towards students...Interesting class thou
Awesome teacher!
he is just amazing!!!!! He makes the course so easy to understand and also very interesting lectures.
has his own rules. strict. but a nice prof.
Go to class. No need to read the textbook. He's not bad.
Very funny prof, but needs to show respect for students in the class.
clear, but treats students differently
Extremely easy to understand, goes very slowly. Useless textbook - don't read it. Material is really easy and exams seem easy but somehow get lower grades on exams than expected - lose marks for little tricks you didn't catch. Seems angry when you ask questions. Very clear, pretty helpful, good class
Loves to share his personal stories, but they do make a rather dry class slightly more fun (but not interesting). Exams are acceptable, but the book is next to useless other than to look up some terms and extra practice for probability. Too many assignments. This guy knows more than he may seems.
go brian, go!

hes a good prof, but aparently hes not that nice during office hours or in hallways. He makes fun of students, its mean, but funny.
teaching techniques are clear but he is very mean and disrespectful to his students (especially if you tick him off)... Hard to get help from him... Makes you look stupid in class if you are not paying attention.
Auesome prof! People need to stop being so sensitive. He is hilarious!
He is moody, but he is really a great teacher. Do GO TO SEE HIM during his office hours. He is helpfull, just give him a chance.
the BEST prof i ever had at UBC. we seriously looked forward to going to his class cuz he makes it soo much fun. even though the material is extremely easy and mostly high school IT and Math and his "passing around the microphone" may scare some people but i wish all my profs were like him :D

Great prof, big ego.
Well he used to teach with David Dodge, and now David Dodge owns canada and brian gram is still picking up cans at ubc. The guy thinks hes so great, and his stupid lil fan club that licks his shooez. In 297 he was teachin quadratic eq for no reason. Try to avoid, but he teaches 290 so have fun.
Great prof, keeps you on your toes. If you get picked on, you very much deserved it. Pay attention! Expects a lot from students... but why shouldn't he?
You either love this guy or hate him. I think he is funny and I find his lectures quite entertaining. If you dont like having two hundred people look at you then he might not be the prof for you because he passes a microphone around the class and it can be embarressing if you arnt paying attention.
An extremely devoted prof who's abilities to teach are greatly underrated. He teaches classes of 200+ students and almost all students understand the material and can get throught the homework. It's very impressive! Thanks Brian!Easy to make small mistakes on exam but content is VERY fair and ALL material on exam has been covered thoroughly in class

A great prof and better person. Presents all the materials needed in order to do well in the course. Funny, Charismatic, Intelligent, and isn't afraid to put you on the spot. He takes time to teach you about what's important in life, so get over yourself and enjoy a good man do great work.

Effective, entertaining teacher. Makes a boring subject bearable. Explains concepts very well and slowly. The material itself is quite straightforward but Graham makes it even more straightforward. The exams are pretty easy, great relaxing course. Graham = Recommended.
this guy is not afraid to insult you. sometimes its funny, sometimes its not. it takes a certain person to like him. its an easy coures though. he goes so slow that you think he's a stupid, but he isn't.
The course material is pretty easy and like someone else mentioned, he goes soo slow. Some people found his jokes funny but I thought a lot of it was really disrespectful and totally should not have been said in a classroom. Anyway, love him or hate him, you're stuck with him for 290.
Brian is very clear in class, but not very helpful outside of the class at all. He picks on people in class (just for fun but sometimes very disturbing). I don't really recommend him.
Very funny guy, he could be a standup comedian! 290 is easy, and he goes unecessarily slow. I don't think his picking on students is disturbing, like some other poeple mentioned, but rather funny and the only thing that kept me from sleeping in that class!
Not as good as people say he is. Overrated. Scripted jokes and simply arrogant outside of class. The class wasn't tough, perhaps this caused people to like him more.
Brian's great! 290 itself is not the most exciting class, but he made it interesting. His classes were fun, I enjoyed them. The only downside is that he likes to pass the mic around and pick on people to answer questions. Overall, he's an awesome prof. Definitely take his class!!!
This course is not as easy as it seems. Going to class is very crucial for this course bc the text is useless and his exams are based on his lectures. Graham makes things easy to understand, but the course overall lacks practice exams, hws, and problems. Don't under estimate this course!!
Brian is an awesome lecturer. He will teach you absolutely everything you'll need to know to ace the course. Go to class, do all the homework assignments, and you should do very well because he is extremely good at explaining things and his notes are great. Plus, the course is easy. He puts a ton of effort into his notes and lots of office hours.
great prof! his lectures are very clear n interesting. midterm and final are fair. all the exam materials are based on his lectures. so go to his class. if u don't want to be picked, sit in the front. overall, great course and great lectures.
his lectures are very fun and interesting. he makes the subject very interesting even if its just stats. an awesome prof.
AWESOME! Even though the material in this class is not particularly exciting, I really enjoyed going to his classes. I love that he singles people out (even when it was me).....it makes the class more entertaining.
This man has the ability to make calculus seems like baby stuff. he is fun and easy to understand. that makes him a good proff! he is attentive to his students and understands that not all students learn at the same pace. HIS NOTES ARE AWESOME. he is funny and just as intelligent. worth taking over other finance proffs who cant speak english.
The best prof ever
Great and fun course. Very easy and entertaining. However, materials are flawed and teaches some very basic stuff.
Amazing teacher! Super clear and very helpful. Highly recommend him.
love the prof!!! hilarious. although the material is a little dry, the prof did a gd job of keeping the class interesting. i always look forward to going to his classes. however, dunt underestimate his mts or final-they are much harder than the hw, perticularly with the time constraint.
Wow - a great semester with a great prof. Thanks so much Brian : ) I still like accounting a bit better though. The course isn't actually that hard. I like how Brian lets us use the study guide to do questions in the book. It helps a bit in understanding the material.
he's NOT helpful AT ALL+he has BAD temper, he had a whole lecture (be4 midterm) answering individul ques, i tried ask him sth, but he rejected, tried to ask him afterwards, he got mad for that, i m not joking, this really happened, even on the final, he was tempered abt students not having seated quickly...unreasonable, unavoidable prof, so gd luck
Students only like him because he makes "jokes" in classes. I give him props for making the class interesting. However, he is snobby and looks down on people when they are not his style (i.e. who don't find his jokes funny, who asks him unintelligent questions, who have a hard time understanding the material). He always puts people on the spot...
Funny, and the mic keeps people awake in class. Fair exams.
Clear when explaining material, however, very rude to talk to, not helpful during class, was mad during the exam because kids couldnt seat fast enough? (although only one door was opened for 500 kids). scripted jokes, **** individual. you'll learn the material, but he's arrogant
Very good professor. Probably the best at UBC. Sometimes comes across as arrogant but on a whole keeps the students engaged and prepares them very well for exams. Thanks Brian.
He's more interesting in the second half of the year if you get him for Finance - he makes the course ridiculously easy, despite how hard it should actually be. I don't know how he does it, but the stuff just sticks in your head.
THE BEST PROF AT UBC! GREAT PERSONALITY, GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR, AND GREAT SWEET HEART. IN OTHER WORDS~BRIAN THE GREAT. ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE IN HIS FUN LECTURES IN BOTH COMM 290&298. I WOULD PAY NOT $630 BUT $6,300 FOR HIS LECTURES. DON'T MISS HIS LECTURES, KNOW WELL HIS NOTES FOR EXAMS. FAIR EXAMS AND HELPFUL OUTSIDE CLASSROOM. ALL THE BEST BRIAN!

I really don't get his hype. I really don't feel he is that great a teacher I think profs like jeff kroker are much better!!! He doesn't teach to the way he test you and he doesn't give you any pratice exams. Not impressed at all, its only slightly better than econ 295.
He is quite good at lecturing, but he has a "I am good, so I can be a jerk" attitude. Often is rude and refuses to help. Too little time given on the midterm, although the tested material was similar to the lecture and hw material. I think he tries to do what he believes is right, which is admirable, but he is just too abrasive for my liking.
without a doubt one of the worst profs ive had and will have... most arrogant person you will ever meet... you will never feel less prepared for a mid term or final... dont expect sample exams, topic reviews, part marks on anything or even to have solutions to questions.. FYI in his other life he was apparently a comedian...or so he thinks...
You will like him at first, then you will either a)think he's really fake and a jerk or b)love him cause he keeps class entertaining. The class material is so easy that he doesn't release any old exams or help you with demo questions. Because it's so easy he also marks the exams very hard (but the exams themselves are easy).
i like his jokes. he makes the class very entertaining, but the midterm was painful. people either do very well, or fail miserablly.
The class material is easy and Brian explained it in a very organized way. Moreover, it was very enjoyable to be in his entertaining class. However, my the midterm exam result was not as good as I expected. He didn't give us many practice to do. Students need to be very detailed when writing his exam.

not recommended.
mean mean man and does not give practice finals or midterms
I suppose you either love or hate Brian. I am not the biggest fan of his teaching style, and I cannot understand why the man won't provide more support for midterms and finals. Unfairly picks on people in class, makes jokes that are sometimes offensive, and acts so arrogantly that it's hard not to dread going to his class.
Makes class interesting and enjoyable. He's not mean (as some have said), he just wants students to participate from time to time. If you hate speaking in front of the class a couple times per term, what are you doing in Commerce anyway? Brian Graham rocks!
he's overly intense & enthusastic. very knowledgeable but treats students like they're airheads. he's approachable and helps if you ask. you need to go to class if you want to understand what he's talking about.
Brian's style of teaching makes coming to class not seems like a waste of time. His lectures are well structured and never short of witty comments/bold humor that some love and others find offensive. Whether you love or hate him, Brian's quite the character. Just play by his rules and you might learn a thing or two about excel. Got it?
Mr. Graham is a wicked guy. He runs a tight ship and a lot of people can't handle it. He confronted me for being on my laptop all class when there was no need for a laptop. He asked me what I was doing and I told him that I was just cruising facebook. If you are honest he will respect you, and you'll have success.
awesome prof, picks on people who dont pay attention, but what is the point of going to class if you dont pay attention? So overall really effective teacher
****ed. can't get his mind out of the gutter. pretty arrogant. swears a bit. but he teaches the concepts pretty clearly. so ignore his repulsive behavior and just listen to the class content (which is pretty hard to do)
He's a nice prof but he picks on people. Sit in the middle so he doesn't pick on you. The course, midterm and final weren't hard but I don't know why I didn't do that well. I guess he's too picky on stuff. He makes sure everything he wants is there or you will get no marks...
Absolutely fabulous. If you can appreciate his wit and interesting sense of humour, you'll love him. Even if you can't, you'll ADORE his class. He is without a doubt one of the top professors at UBC. He is clear, concise, and entertaining. Very little exam prep - beg old practice off older students. Does pick on ppl, but more in 290 than in 298.
Slowest finals marker ever. Don't be surprised if you don't get your mark until weeks after they're supposed to be out. Otherwise brilliant prof.
Brian Graham - you either love him or hate him! His jokes are funny in class. He's quite arrogant though (and sometimes not that polite), and he does pick on people in class. His teaching is excellent - very clear, and very helpful in office hours. Exams aren't difficult, but he's a picky marker! Many did worse than they thought they would!
Midterm seemed very fair, but then he was SO UNFAIR with his marking!!! My exam is full of check marks, the vast majority of my answers were correct and yet I got a 66%?!?! It truly doesn't make sense to me. Use pen because I wish I could complain for more marks.Focuses on what you don't know instead of what you know.
Very good prof. Attend class. Marking of midterm is slightly unfair if not done the way he wants it. Homework is challenging, and not worth very much but helpful for the midterm/finals
His lectures are pretty good but he definitely has an anger management issue. He went postal during comm290 final and started yelling and screaming at a poor student. Even the proctors were shocked.
Alright overall. Very very particular with his marking. Picks on students in class and can be really arrogant at points, but that doesn't undermine his teaching capabilities. He notes are very clear and understandable.
Shallow, arrogant, demeaning, and a decent prof. Picky marker, but not impossible to do well in the course. Attend his classes and pay attention to his notes! He will give you very clear guidelines on what is expected. Helpful in office hours.
He is too arrogant and picked up students alot. He is so unfair to some of the students. if he likes you , he will be lenient on your exams.
Brilliant teacher. Clear and concise in his teaching, without leaving any details behind. Picky marking just means you need to fully understand the concepts and choose your words wisely in your explanations.
As a teacher - excellent. Both 290 and 298 were a breeze with him. Explains concepts very well and relates the course to real-world materials. As a person - meh. You either appreciate his humor or you hate him like there's no tomorrow.
Really good at teaching. Uses analogy to explain complicated concepts. Makes it easy to understand. Might be personal at times.
Very good prof. Takes lots of notes, and they are all relevant. For sure take finance with him!
Easy midterms and exams, just do all the given exercises. THe exams and midterms are in very similar formats! But not really respectful to students at certain times. If he is mad that day, he will easily be angry with little things and will even scold the TAs.
Good and effective prof. Exams are quite easy. can be arrogant and offensive at times
Pretty great prof...the only thing he dislikes is incompetency. He likes people who are prepared, so when you ask him questions make sure you know what you're doing and you've completely thought things through or else he will bash on you hard.
Great prof. Definitely reg in his class for 298. Explains concepts very well, make sure you attend class - whether it be 290 or 298. He writes his notes out in class and explains them at the same time so you gotta be there. In second year you should be mature enough to learn that skipping is not a good idea because no course is truly "easy".
Brian is the best teacher i've had at UBC, period. He is clear with the way he teaches and i strongly recommend that you try to get into his class. You either love him or hate him but either way you will learn a great deal from taking his class. Other teachers should strive to teach as well as he does.
Seemed pretty anal about forcing his 1000+ students to kill as many trees as possible for no good reason. Other than that, his lectures are clear and he can be funny at times. May come off as arrogant or offensive depending on your personality.
midterm and exam are straightforward. His notes are useful. Recommended.
This class is not easy if you are not good at math.Brian has been teaching this for 15+ years ,and you can tell why he can still teach all comm290 classes now by his teaching skills.
Mixed feelings about Graham... his lectures are great in themselves, very clear albeit slow and provides notes exercises to students for practice, which are reflected in the exams. But he isn't helpful at all outside the classroom, it's like if you don't act/ask as he expects then he gets confused/defensive and rubs you the wrong way.
Keep u entertained throughout the class. Make dry materials very interesting using the funniest example imaginable. Exam is very fair and easy if u study.
Extremely engaging professor. Doubt anyone else could make linear programming seem interesting. Sometimes comes across as a bit arrogant/rude. Don't get your own copy of the text, just share with a friend - you don't really use it. Go to class and take good notes (even if he says not to) - excel documents posted online are useless.
Graham is a good professor, conveys boring subject matter in a decently engaging, clear way. Content is not difficult, but take many notes and practice a lot - exams are given nowhere near enough time and posted notes/excel files are useless. Also beware: he's quite self-centered, arrogant, and will not hesitate to belittle you. But he teaches well
Brian is an amazing prof ! If you attend class and takes good notes you will do well. Don't buy the textbooks it is useless and confusing and study the homework the midterm and final is EXACTLY like the homework
His personality reminds me of Gateman, except he can actually teach and his exams are predictable. You will either love/hate him but its undeniable that he is an effective teacher. Go to class/tutorial, take notes, don't read the textbook and practice past exams. The course may seem easy in class but take it seriously or it will catch up on you.
Very Interesting Character, overall good professor.
Very questionable sense of humour, however, one of the best profs I have ever had. He has a B.Ed. and this is extremely evident through the clarity of teaching. Brian has made a huge impression on my learning and I will be forever grateful for the Excel tools that he has taught me. Don't buy the textbook, go to labs, and don't be late.
Brian explains every concept perfectly to the point where even an Arts student would understand what's going on. He cracks jokes consistently throughout class, most of which are actually hilarious. Anyone who mentioned below that he is arrogant/rude/mean should drop out of school and apply for daycare work. Awesome prof
Very helpful teacher that explains concepts very clearly and assumes nothing (E.g. Even teaches students the basic algebra steps he expects). The fact that he's an amazing professor allows him to teach such a difficult course that has quite challenging concepts. Great guy!
My least favourite professor I had so far at UBC for various reasons. You either love him or hate him.
Very organized way of teaching but the lectures examples and content were too simple compared to the midterm and final. Needs to use complex examples in class so students are better prepared for exams.
Not approachable but tries to be. Boring course yet he puts an effort to make it interesting. Exams weren't predictable despite the practice we got through assignments.
Don't recommend this professor, get a different professor if you have an option. Class average was way too low for my section (64%)- hmm maybe this reflects his teaching or the exams itself were too difficult. Either way, that is way to low of an average.
Brian GRAHAM is very good at explaining topics in class but he does not provide proper notes and is not very approachable outside of class. His lectures are quite entertaining and he makes everything look easy in class, had a hard time catching up on my own. Midterm was ok with studying but could not finish in time, Final was hard
Not a recommended prof. Even if you don't attend class you can still do well since the lecture notes posted online are super easy to understand and the lectures themselves are sort of useless. The final on the other hand was far from easy and many questions were unfair.
Arrogant is one word to describe him-he literally degrades/condescends students in class.
Avoid this professor if you can for various reasons.
Exams will kill your GPA no matter how hard you study. Take this course with a different professor because you won't learn much in his class.
So perhaps you'll either love or hate him, but I found Brian to be a very organized and effective teacher. Class notes were great, and his explanations were crystal clear. Helpful in office hours. His exams were fair. Go to classes; exam questions can be from his lectures. In the end, average was 71 across sections, within the Sauder's guidelines.
Good teacher, clear lectures. Messed up the first online exam and that resulted in a very low midterm average (60%) but some of the blame is on people who didn't take the course seriously.
Brian is a great professor. His sense of humor may offend the more conservative minds but hey, you're a 18-20 year old person and in this day and age you need to have a sense of humor. Well spoken and much better than the alternative 290 prof, take him if possible.
Is a tad condescending in lectures sometimes, but also cracks a lot of jokes to lighten it up. I'd take him again for sure.
Overall decent professor, though he tries very hard to be funny and hip. The end result is a misguided parody of what the previous generations think the next generation is like. Clear explanations, and though the material is boring, he presents it in a fun way. The way he tries to shame students into shape is ineffective and a waste of time.
slides on connect have literally nothing to look at. force you to go to class
I'd say brian is a risk to take. you can either do quite well or fail misrably. 100 people failed in a class of 550 students who were taking brian but the average was still 71. so average does not clearly represent what people can expect to get.
He is just great, super smart and sassy. His lectures were helpful and very clear. The exams were a bit harder than our expectations though.
Explained concepts well and exams, while challenging, were pretty easy.
Brian is the best prof in First Year Sauder. He invented COMM 290 and definitely knows what he's talking about, inside and out. I wish he was my dad.
Brian's the definition of a beauty - he makes learning excel interesting and ridiculously easy.
Absolute beauty. Brian Graham is the man. Take his class, great prof and a genuinely caring instructor.
Explained things well and clearly but I never found him exceptional in any way. His lectures were moderately engaging and he did seem to respect his students.
