I thought he was a good teacher. Does a ton of examples in class and his tests reflect the homework and quizzes. Helpful to read the book also. He curves tests by usually taking 5-10 points off the total depending on how well the class as a whole did. He is just a nice quy and is willing to help.

His homework is impossible to do without help and my TA was more helpful than he was. Makes frequent errors when presenting in lecture and seems unprepared most of the time. Doesn't stick to the test dates listed on the syllabus, which makes things hard. Spends too much time on the easy concepts and not enough on the hard ones. Take someone else.

I took the Chem 2 flipped class and it was a very good way to learn and I learned the material very well. His grading can be frustrating since his exams are pass fail but you do get to retake them. Overall he is a really good professor and he knows what he is talking about and knows how to teach you. If you have questions just ask him.

I took his flipped classroom Chem 2, and it worked really well for me. I did poorly in Chem 1 because I didn't do well with the professor just talking at me, so being in a more hands on classroom helped a lot. His pass/fail grading system also really helped me be successful, and I liked having test retakes. It was a lot of work but worth it.

I took the Chem 2 flipped class which was way easier and taught me more than Chem 1 for majors. Would suggest taking the flipped class since you get to work in groups and the teacher and TA's are easily accessible during class. Overall, a pretty good professor.

If you prefer to learn from a textbook you can, though it isn't required. The flipped class was awesome. Gute was extremely flexible and understanding with COVID happening. He was actually well-prepared. Incredibly pleased with his class and he gave me an appreciation for chemistry. Definitely take his flipped class if given the chance.

Gute is an amazing professor. Before class, you have to take a pre class quiz. He gives you videos that help prepare you for the lecture. During the lecture, you go through practice problems and iclicker questions. After class, you have homework to complete for that day. 6 weeks of group work. His tests require a lot of work if you want to do well.

He doesn't have any exams, it's challenging problems you have to solve, but you have a week to do it and you can retake it. Complete the hw and checkpoints and just put in the effort and it's a solid B. To get an A, you need to have so many points for the "problems" and Hw, and the final was a presentation about a topic of your choice.

If you get your work done and apply yourself in the flipped chem class you can get 100% fairly easily. Brian listened to our feedback and made adjustments accordingly. He also is the only professor ive had at UMD to treat me like a person. He is easy to get along with and is overall a great professor.

They put in extra effort to help with class notes and homework questions in a timely manner. Overall loved this class and would 100% recommend professor Gute for chem 2.

The weekly assignments can seem overwhelming at first, but they're fine. It takes up about as much time as a normal lecture with light homework. He tried having a class discord this semester which really helped. He responds well to feedback and is lenient. He answers any homework questions on the discord quickly. And he really cares about students.

Grade oscillated between B+ and A-, but finaled at A-. Very responsive; discord = LIFESAVER: Classmates/TA/him clear up concepts rapidly. Homework-heavy, expect to put in effort. I found his videos/slidenotes broke down steps well. Testing material % is a high ratio to HW, so striving on HW helps prepare. Weekly group work - not fun, but managable.

Avoid at all costs. He accused most of our class of cheating on an open note quiz, emphasis on OPEN NOTE. He threatened the class, and took a month to reply to an important email because he was "suspicious that I was cheating" (I was NOT. I got a TUTOR) He went on a vacation for two weeks with no service, so we were left to fend for ourselves....

I've heard Brian Gute was a fantastic professor in previous sections, but in mine, he must've changed how he directed the course. If you take Gute, you will be fine, he is a decent - good teacher and cares about his students' success. His exams are slightly challenging, but he gives you his expectations of what you should know before the exam.

If there was one word to describe Dr. Gute, it would be disrespectful. If you have an issue in the class, get ready for every email you send to him to be blatantly ignored. The class itself is average difficulty, and the Canvas page is set up fairly decent. Assignments take a long time. Be prepared to be accused of cheating on open note exams.

Feels more like an independent study with a couple exams comparative to an actual class. You can pass this class without taking a single exam. The class is well laid out, and his expectations are clear and if you meet them you will be successful. It is time consuming and that's because chemistry is hard and this class is very math heavy.

I took this class during the summer, so the content was condensed from a semester into six weeks (which greatly increased the intensity). Although there is A LOT of work for this class, Prof. Gute clearly cares about learning and success in Chem 2. Quality class to take through UMD, but don't expect to be able to do the bare minimum and succeed.

Gute was by far one of the best professors I have had. For my class, he used a different learning model. The first exam, it caught me off guard and I didn't like it, however, it forced me to practice the content more and I have a way better grade than I would have in a normal class setup up/better retention of learning without stressing.
