Why is it that the test average on a music test is 62.5? 10% of music 101 gets A's? I was counting on an easy A, but instead I got a block of torture. Why not just stick your head in a blender?
Horrible teacher. Tests require you to pick out 10 seconds of a 30 minute song on the first try. He won't play it again. Take this from a different teacher.
This class was difficult because for the tests, you have to identify few-second clips of songs that may be up to ten minutes long. Many of the songs sound alike. The actual music history was interesting, but reading assignments were long. Test material seems irrelevant to the point of the class.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE TAKE THIS CLASS FROM THIS INSTRUCTOR! HE'S A **** WHO GIVES NO PREPATORY INFORMATION TO THE TEST! U GET MOUNDS OF INFO & NO WAY TO ORGANIZE IT TO KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BE TESTED ON!!! MUSIC IS MY MAJOR, I KNOW A LOT ABOUT IT, & I'LL PROBABLY BE GET A D! ****!
Not as easy as you might have heard but Bro Harker is a nice guy and does care for the students. If you have a concern he will listen to you. I actually enjoyed the listening portion of the tests. You can listen to it all week long to get it down as you study for your other classes.
This class is VERY difficult. To Dr. Harker's credit, I learned a lot about Jazz music and the knowledge has stuck with me. I received a "B" grade, which is the lowest grade I have ever received at BYU (I am a senior). Overall, I think the B was worth it because he gave such great lectures.
I don't know what everyone else is talking about, I found this class to be fairly easy with a minimal amount of work. I found the lectures to be interesting and easy to understand. I think the big thing is if you like jazz or not. If you don't get very excited by it, don't expect a high grade.
I loved this class. If you have a love for jazz, it is super fun. Really interesting lectures. You do need to study hard for tests, but he tells you exactally what you need to know. As long as you read and highlight all the bolded words in the book and learn them, you will be fine. the listening part is easy if you put a few minutes into it
Harker is a great teacher. He knows what he is talking about. If you take good notes and read the text you will do well; however, if you do not you will do very poorly. I have come out of his courses much more informed and with a better understanding of both music 303 and 304. Anybody who thinks otherwise is just lazy.
Compared to Music 301 and 302, this class was a walk in the park! He spends a lot of time on the stuff you actually need to know. Sometimes his lectures can drag, but if you pay attention and do the reading, it isn't that difficult. I enjoyed this class.
He was an awful professor. He didn't know the material about which he was lecturing, he spelled words and composer's names wrong on the tests and was an awful professor. I don't recommend taking any classes from him! He refused to give perfect scores on exams as well, saying that no one should be getting perfects.
Very clear in both his expectations and his teaching style. Tests have a lot on the music, so it's a good idea to go to class because he spends so much time on the music. For a music history class, which are notoriously difficult, it's not too bad. I would have definitely have gotten an A if I had gone to class each time.
I took the Jazz History class from Bro Harker. His lectures were interesting but you have to know a lot of little details in all the songs besides the title and artist. The tests were hard but he does give a review sheet. There is a lot of reading you have keep up with to get a good grade. there are no other assignments to help boost your grade.
I thought Harker did an excellent job and is a good professor. You do really have to study, and the listening exams are tough. But I came into the class with no jazz knowledge and not a lot of interest in jazz, and left loving it! Not easy, but this class is worth it!
Take his history of jazz class! His classes are very informational and interesting. He is a total music geek and it is obvious he's very passionate about it. He does look for specifics in his tests, however, and you pretty much have to memorize the book chapters to do well on the test. It's not too hard, though. Loved it!
History of jazz is sweet class especially if youre into music at all. You need to know the bold words and people in the book for every test. Get with familiar with the songs and know the form. You have 4 tests with 2 parts to each and 3 listening charts. Thats it. Harker is a good teacher and loves jazz.
I think Harker is a really nice professor. The tests were tough but his lectures are very helpful and if you take good notes you will get a good grade. I liked the class a lot. I would recomend this teacher. He is very nice and really wants to help the students.
Very good teacher. listens to every person's questions and makes sure they understand. Good at explaining abstract concepts. No extra credit, but he drops the lowest test score (including the final). Only homework outside of studying for tests is 4 concert reports, which you get credit for just doing them. TAKE GOOD NOTES, and study before tests.
The class consists of 4 2-part tests, a journal for 4 concerts, in-class writing exercises, and 4 listening charts. He's a great teacher who is very informative and loves the subject. I enjoyed the class, but the tests were difficult, asking for a lot of details from the textbook. A hard class, but definitely worth it if you love jazz.
Pretty boring lectures for how interesting the subject matter could be. He definitely knows his stuff but just isn't the greatest teacher. Listening and written parts to each of the 4 tests. The listening is pretty tricky but you can do well on the written parts without too much studying. I like Jazz so that helped out.
Really boring class, tests are hard and he doesn't care about students understanding. The worst teacher I could ever have during my 4 years at BYU. Too much irrelevant information. Take this class with Dr. Hinckley!!!!
If you're even slightly uninterested in Jazz, do not take this class. The material is really boring, and he focuses on a very select set of musicians. I wouldn't recommend taking this class. All of the tests are extremely hard.
Take excellent notes!!!!! This is probably the hardest part. I had this class evenings on wednesday and always started dozing off halfway through. However, I made it out with an A because of my notes. The test questions follow the lectures/book very closely so review those beforehand and you'll be fine. Plus he drops 1/10 tests including the final.
Very organized and straightforward. Go to every class and take notes, this is where 80% of the test comes from. Read the text outlines online instead of pouring over a boring textbook. I've had many classes from him. He is helpful and willing to work with you. Tests aren't hard if you study for them and READ THE ANTHOLOGY! Loved the class.
Very straightforward class. Take good notes because the tests come mostly from the lecture. Very helpful.
Dr. Harker is a great teacher. He kept us interested in his lectures and involved students in most of the discussion. BUT, The tests were hard and he doesn't prepare students for what will be included. It's a toss up, you never know what details he wants you to know. Anyway, I would say take it from Howard. His class is more fun (and easier).
Terrible professor. Talks way too much and doesn't test us on what we cover in class. He says "we have to learn it on our own through readings".....then why are you here? Don't take it from him.
Super boring class. Bro. Harker just lectures the whole time in a super monotone voice. Unless you LOVE history, this class will be super boring. Tests are also pretty hard, you have to study alot. Nice guy, but boring and alot of boring reading.
I thought Dr. Harker did a great job teaching this class even though he normally doesn't teach it. Test questions are such that "either you know it or you don't". So if you're not interested in putting time into this humanities course, you'll have a hard time on the tests.
Pretty boring class but relatively easy and straightforward. Take good notes and study a little and you can get an A without a problem. Professor Harker seemed disinterested in the material most of the time and the lectures were not engaging. Take from someone else if you actually want to learn something.
I'll be honest, I am not a student with any musical talent but this class seemed easy to me. It's obvious that Prof Harker likes what he is teaching and he answers questions very helpfully. Tests are not that hard as long as you do your part and study. Attend every class and take good notes and you'll get a good grade on this class.
So, he's not a regular religion teacher, but Dr. Harker's class was really wonderful in helping me to understand and apply the teachings in the second half of the Book of Mormon. If he's on the religion list: TAKE HIM!
Listening and written tests were extremely difficult to prepare for. Expectations were not clear. Knowing jazz helps, but won't guarantee you a good grade.
This class was so detail specific. The listening quizzes and tests were so difficult for me. They are so hard to study for and he was unclear about what would be on them. I learned a lot, but it was a lot harder than it needed to be. The textbook has a lot of extraneous info. so it is hard to read.
This course was so much fun! I learned a ton of interesting stuff about music and genuinely enjoyed class. Grades: weekly online quizzes (open book), tests, and concert reports. He let us do 2 extra reports and skip the final--it was awesome! Not too hard at all. Attend class bc you get your info from lecture, not the book. Would def recommend!
Professor Harker is really a man I look up to. He gave me an appreciation that I wasn't expecting for musicians over the last few centuries and for their achievements. I thoroughly enjoyed this class. I had to study about 3 hours for each midterm, and about 5 or 6 for the final, but I did well. I would definitely recommend him.
I took Professor Harker as an evening class once a week. Hardest part about the class is staying awake during the lectures. He basically goes over what the tests will be on in class. Much less work than other Music 101 teachers, max one hour per week. Pay attention, take good notes, memorize the songs, and you'll get an 'A'.
If you're looking to take MUSIC101 for the GE requirement, take it from Harker. I took the once-a-week class that was 2 1/2 hours, but he always let us out early and gave us a break. That being said, don't skip class or you'll miss really well-done lectures. He knows his stuff and explains things really well. I thoroughly enjoyed the class.
Brother Harker was a professor that truly cared about his students. He knew everyone in the class's name by the first day of class, and really seemed involved in the class. He was always happy, and very knowledgable about the class content. Great professor.
Bro. Harker knows what he is talking about but assumes everyone else does too, even if you're not a music major. He doesn't offer any test prep at all or tell you really what you will be tested on unless you ask him. Lectures can be boring. Tests are harder than they should be. Interesting subject, so take the class, just from a different teacher.
He is pretty good and i think he teaches the subject well. It is just SO boring. I would reccomend finding another teacher for this class. I think some people in the class really liked him though, so you might like him as a professor. Tests are also pretty hard too, you have to study A LOT.
I'm not very musically inclined but I did recognize that Professor Harker was a great instructor. I would have failed if it weren't for his lectures; he explained concepts from the book in a way that I could understand. The homework load was reasonable. Three tests plus a final, but they weren't too bad. Just listen to the required songs often!!
Harker's class requires a lot of reading and listening, both to his lectures and the music you'll be tested on. He doesn't post his powerpoints so you have to go to class. Study groups saved me with this class. The tests are all in-class, which is nice.
I've taken History of jazz and 303 from Dr. Harker. I love the way he approaches educating his students, leaving much to discovery but also directing us towards advanced thinking. I actually remember what I have learned in his lectures. His tests aren't made to fool you and he lets you know what you need to study. Tests are based off of lectures.
Very knowledgeable, but expects too much of a Music 101 class. This class isn't for music majors, it is a GE and shouldn't be treated like it is for Music majors. Tests are hard and it was very hard to know what we were going to be tested on. If you can do well on the test you will get an A, chances are you won't though. No curving either.
Love his lectures but the tests are hard...
I took Music 101 for the general credit and I was really impressed with how much I actually learned. I came to understand and appreciate music so much better. The class has a lot of listening and some readings each week. You also have to go to 4 concerts outside of class and write short reports on them (makes for good dates!).
Dr. Harker uses powerpoints and lectures that he does not put online, so you have to come to class if you want the information on the test. I didn't do the textbook readings and I was fine, but you have to bring the Anthology (from Bookstore) to class every day. He is open to help outside of class, but really makes you work for a good grade.
Dr. Harker really knows his stuff. However his class was rather dull and didn't include lots of student participation, despite a class size of 30-40. The exams were all in-class. He required lots of memorization of concepts, solely to regurgitate them on the exams. I forgot them all just days after the exam.
Caffeine up before his classes because they're like Ben Stein narrating CSPAN. Doesn't tell you what to expect on the tests - obviously wants you to become a freaking expert on his life's work. Asking what you're going to be tested on seems insulting to him. Acts like his is the only class you probably have.
Zero test prep and mocks people who ask questions about what to expect on the test. Good luck.
Taking M302 and M303 was my least favorite part of being a music major at BYU. While Dr. Harker seems like a great guy, his teaching style is pretty bad. His tests aren't actually hard, he just does a horrible job of preparing the students. It's a brutal class for 2 credits, and it sucks because it's required. The more recent reviews are right.
His lectures are so dull and are not available online so you have to pay attention to all the boring parts if you want to do well. the fact you cant even review your notes online is silly. Thinks his class is very important
This class is way too hard for a general 101 class. Expectations of memorizing exact 20 word definitions, being able to identify a specific piece of music from many time periods, and very tough merciless tests. Lectures are dull, hard not to sleep through. Don't take it with this professor if you want an easy art credit.
Easily the most difficult class I've taken and as a 101??? Really? He talks so slow, I put his lectures on 1.25 speed since I was taking his class online on-demand. Because the tests weigh so much in your grade you have to take them seriously and study REALLY hard if you want an A (I re-watched lectures at 1.5 speed in order to get a 90%).
I thought this class was going to be really hard but prof harker does a good job at preparing you for the tests. although his lectures can be really boring, you need them to do well on the exams (textbook info isnt on the exam) make sure to know the listenings VERY well! there are listening sections on the exams. pretty easy, just put in the work
I really enjoyed learning about the music things in class. I started out not so great for my grade, and didn't do well on the first two tests. However, I reached out to Professor Harker and he gave me a better idea of how to go about the class, which really helped me. I ended with an A. Good gen-ed class.
I had Dr. Harker's music 101 class on demand, which meant I never actually got to talk to him in real time. However, his lectures were very interesting and he made it very clear how to get an easy A on the tests and in the class. He would literally reply to my emails within minutes of sending them, and he was always so helpful and kind.
Professor Harker is really great. I took from him online so I would watch his lectures at 1.5 speed lol. He has 4 tests and a research paper. I dont love the writing but I learned a lot from the lectures and tests. He puts everything you need to know in the syllabus very clearly. He is so nice, always emails the class and holds weekly office hours
Professor Harker was amazing! Watch all his lectures, take good notes, and you will do well on tests. I have a music background, play 5 instruments, and have taken AP music theory in high school so it was a BREEZE, but I believe even someone without a music background can pass this! Make sure you have a good ear for listenings of the music though!
He's a great Professor, he is really passionate about music and is a great teacher. He knows his stuff and helps you understand. He is actually really funny in his own way and I thoroughly enjoy attending class. You really only have one assignment a week and you will always get 100% on them plus four concert reports. The tests are pretty easy too.
I have no music background and class was easy. Must attend 4 concerts and write reports. Tests are online in testing center and pretty easy, have to study but straight forward questions. 1 assignment per week and its like a game, you can answer as many times as needed to get 100%. Lowest midterm dropped. Prof. is very passionate and knowledgeable.
I loved taking Music 302 with Dr. Harker. His lectures were really informative. However, I would say that it's really hard to get a good grade without coming to class. That is your best bet for acing the tests. I had to study quite a bit for his tests. But I feel like I learned a lot and have a better appreciation for the music and composers now
I loved taking History of Jazz from Dr. Harker. He really knows His stuff and gives super clear examples of different styles and genres. I also felt he was super respectful of the culture and history of jazz music, and barely talked about white versions of jazz. Lectures are super important, can't miss them if you want to do well.
MUS 302 is somewhat hefty, but this professor is seriously underrated. Very clear with expectations, very helpful in lectures, and cares a lot about the material. Homework load really isn't that bad. Exams (3) somewhat hefty but once again you go in knowing exactly what will be on the test. Is a caring and a fair lecturer/grader.
Lots of lectures. Must attend four concerts outside of class. Exams are reasonable and he drops your lowest one, but if you don't study, you will definitely struggle.
He thinks his class is very important. He doesn't share his slides, he doesn't have recordings of lectures, and he doesn't make study guides. Exams are poorly written and reference obscure details. Lectures are boring. We have to use a paid service for homework. He loves what he teaches though.
my husband and I who were both in the class planned to go on a vacation (before we even go into school) and the in person test happened to be when we were gone. I asked if we could take it before or after we get back, and his advice was to reschedule our entire family vacation. or not to go on vacation during school. not very emphatic or helpful.
Professor Harker is very kind, but this class is objectively boring unless you're super into old music. Every class is roughly 2 hours long of you just sitting in a room listening to music blare at you. I struggled staying awake most of the time. It's not super hard if you can memorize all the facts about each song and composer, but it's boring.
He is really nice but this class was definitely my hardest this semester. The tests were pretty difficult and I didn't feel prepared for them. Reading the textbook isn't necessary, but because the lectures were confusing, I would recommend reading it.
It's straightforward. Lectures are posted online, attendance not for grade, but I recommend attending class. His lectures are thorough. Tests are difficult if you don't watch or attend lectures. Expect to study if you want a good grade. Your grade is made up of only quizzes and tests. Don't worry. It's not bad if you stay on top of it.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I learned from Music 101 and how I began to care more about classical music. Dr. Harker emphasizes slowing down and appreciating art while learning about its background. It is an adjustment at first, but his class will change your life.
He is the best professor I could ask for for a music history course, funny lectures and the workload and tests are fair for what the class is. He is forthright with what the test looks like. Be sure to read the textbook, it will help. I am taking him again for 301, fantastic professor!
Not a hard class if you are familiar with music and composers. He drops 2 assignments and 1 exam. You have to go to 4 classical music concerts and write a report but it isn't hard if you go to the music building and look at their schedule of free concerts. Class is only 1x per week though, it gets long but never goes the full 2 hrs and 50 minutes.
This is the best music history professor you will ever have. His lectures are engaging, he wants each student to excel in this course. He makes himself available for help and does not sugar coat the history of music. His tests are hard but he sets you up to do well in them. (I am not a great test taker) TAKE HIM FOR MUSIC HISTORY!!!!!!
Passionate about Jazz. Slides are wonderful. Lectures are interesting and super useful. Go to class, you will WANT to go to class because he is kind, caring, and engaging. 10/10 I wish I could have him for every music history class.
I loved this class! Attendance technically isn't mandatory, most of the content on the tests was stuff that was discussed in class, so missing probably isn't a good idea. Don't be intimidated by the length of the class, he hardly ever released us after more than an hour and a half. I felt so great after every class, I'd definitely take it again.
Dr. Harker was amazing! I've heard this class is notoriously difficult, but Dr. Harker made it so straightforward and fair. He prepared us very well for tests and there was never anything on a test we did not learn in class. There are 5 tests each 10% and if you studied, it was easy to get an A on every test.
He was great! Lectures were long but he made them feel easy-breezy. There was a lot of material, based only on the lectures -- I was nervous about the exams but none of them were cumulative, even the final. Passionate about music history, made me excited about it too :) Great excuse to go to music performances, too. *Textbook was online.
Readings/textbook aren't necessary but lectures and homework are. Must take notes on lectures to do well on tests as prof. doesn't post slides. Made music interesting, no background needed. Drops lowest test. Must attend 4 concerts and write reports. Can tell prof. really loves music, he made class great even while dealing with injuries.
This class is a breeze, especially if you have a background in music. I did all the homework within the first week or two of class, so it doesn't take long to do. The tests are so easy, probably the most tricky thing is remembering the forms that all the pieces are in. But if you have the chance to take it from Dr. Harker, please do!
I wish I could say something good about Professor Harker, but I can't. I could have gotten an A without ever coming to class and just doing the reading and assignments. The classes were redundant and unnecessary. He has a sleepy, slow, boring lecture voice. The class is easy, but I don't recommend it.
As far as the knowledge he has got it and knows a lot about music. However, I would only recommend his section if you do not have any other sections available to you. The biggest issue is his lectures are rather dull, which is a shame because the topic is interesting, but the lectures lack engagement and passion which turn me off when I go.
Dr. Harker is awesome. The homework is really straightforward and he tells you exactly what will be on the test. Don't skip class because everything on the test is from the lectures and his slides aren't that easy to navigate. There's one group project. Also his lectures are NOT boring! They are very interesting and I think he's hilarious.
