This class is very fast paced, but the teacher is very clear that it not hard to keep up with it. Just attend the class and take good notes and you should do fine. Very nice guy and available after class in case you need more help. His tests and quizes are straight foward no trick questions!
Hayes is perhaps the most straightforward and honest teacher I have had, which also makes him the most effective teacher I have had. While he moves at a very fast pace, he clearly outlines everything you will need to know throughout the course and makes himself available if you need extra help. Highly reccomended.

guys! that class was hard for me but in a good way. He wanted us to learn and thanks to him I got a lot of knowledge. He goes fast with the material but he didn't collect any h/w. He is the best math teacher I've ever seen.He goes fast but you understand everthing clearly.If you need help he is always avaliable for students. I did not think that I could love CALCULUS before his class. And he is funny too. You will not regret!
he is a very good teacher. explain very well but very strict on grading quizez and exams. be prepare to work hard when you are taking this class. if you are a slacker, DON'T take his class. you will not pass.
He was a nice man, with cheezy jokes. He means well, but he moves very fast with the material. If you dont understand math easily, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS! I will assure you, that you will fail! If you are decent in math, you will do fine, because he is a really friendly person.
While Mr. Hayes and I have never exchanged more than a few words, I've taken 3 of his classes and I consider him to be the best teacher I've ever had. He's always clear on the material and offers extra help if you require it. His classes may not be the most exciting, but he teaches math very well. Be prepared to work though!

Mr. Hayes is the best math teacher! My whole life I have had bad math teachers and it was awesome to finally get a great math teacher. He explains everything very well and is very helpful. I wish all of my teachers were as good as him. You need to take his classes!

Not a fan of this math teacher for MAT131. The way he teaches was like as if he was in a rush. tardiness and absences affects grade. Which I think that we're not in high school anymore. He assigns homework but the homework does not go towards your grade. Which I think it should, and yea it helps to study but it would be nice to get some points..
he is the one of my best teacher in triton. He is teaching the math in fun. :) and he is so helpful.
Definitely an easy teacher. As long as you keep up in class and take the notes to understand what he's saying it's an easy A-B. If you don't take the notes it's a mistake because his whole class is note related...quizzes are basically from the notes besides....he gives hard questions on tests, but if you look over your notes you'll do fine
I hate the way he teach because he only teach 1 way and if u dont get it ur lost and on ur own. I drop the class because I wasnt understnading and he wants you to do everything by hand and he treats you like ur in high school when your in college.
i kept up with my work & was happy with my grade. very fair teacher and willing to help. i enjoyed his sense of humor + positive attitude! perhaps 1 of the best professors ive ever had! i highly recommend his class to anyone as long as they make sure to take their notes/do their homework! anyone who disagrees is just a lazy student-GREAT PROFESSOR
I hate the way he teach... boring class
terrible....talks to fast never clear on anything you will always be lost boring dry annyoing makes you do test corrections that effect your grade negatively treats you like your in high school. doesnt engage the class just eriible
He's a strict kind of person, therefore expect no phones, chatting or anything of that nature. He gives hard quizzes and tests, but it all comes out of your notes and class examples. He really knows his stuff and explains things clearly.If you stay on top of your homework, you'll do well. Got a b in the course. Would take him again without a doubt.
he is a very good teacher. His lectures are clear, as long as you go to class, take good notes and study a lil, your grade won't be lower than B.
He is strict, precise and highly organized. His quizzes are hard, but every question comes from the lecture notes. Do not expect multiple choice format.These quizzes WILL prepare you for the final exam.I love the way he teaches, and I like his personality. I highly recommend this teacher, he is definitely one of my most favorite teachers at Triton.
His pace is too fast for an everyday class. He is too strict with notes/ if its crinkled just a bit don't expect a 100%. Tricks you on the tests, Makes his tests too long for the 50 min time frame. He treats you like you're still in high school. Talks about math wizards and Math jail. Sad attempt to be funny.
He is incredibly strict, which Is fine for his no phones no talking policy because you are there to learn. When it comes to tests and quizzes he grades very harshly and will take off points if your work is not perfect. The class is too fast paced for someone who is learning Calc for the first time. His tests are more complex than than the homework.
Had him for Calculus. Overall a great experience and my favourite teacher ever. He has strict attendance and grading policies which are fair and made clear on day one. Has a quirky sense of humour I enjoyed. Its a university calibre course with respect to difficulty and what you'll learn. Doing well in his class means your ready for the next level.
He's a great at teaching! I learned so much in so little. I didn't do very well on the tests due to bad habits. You really need to do the homework and memorize every note in order to do good! He's very strict and a very hard grader, but like he says, its all in the notes.
Really awful professor. No multiple test. Must do test corrections no matter how many you get wrong! Oh yeah and no points for the corrections. Homework every night (50+ From text book) DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Professor Hayes takes the tough subject of Calculus and makes it "easy" to learn. He's very clear and is not only an expert in the subject matter, but is an expert on how to teach it so that students learn the material. Expectations are made clear on Day 1 and are not unreasonable for a class of this caliber.
I dreaded the whole semester! A lot of homework, notes, and studying. Hayes will teach you the impossible. He is very thorough, strict, and straight to the subject. I would take him for all future math courses because I know what to expect. If you are not a strong student or good at math. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER
Overall he's a good person but he only grades quiz and test so if you do bad on one you doomed!
He is very organized and very clear in lecture. Students need to be patient in writing notes. He gives informational and very helpful notes. He is very meticulous in quizzes. Overall, he is a good Math teacher. You'll have good grade, you just have to do your part as a student.
He's tough but very clear about what he expects since day one, so don't leave everything till last minute. Very great at teaching the subject! He's very knowledgeable about what he teaches and not only that, he has a way to make a hard problem seem a lot easier. He's also quirky and funny. Would definitely take another class with him again.
Honestly would not recommend this teacher for anyone who has trouble with anything fast pace. Personally wouldn't take another class with him.
Mr Hayes is tough but fair. I didn't put as much effort in as I should have, but he was very clear about what was expected from everyone. He is kind and sometimes funny but takes math very seriously! Students that don't understand Mr. Hayes are maybe a bit lazy. This is a real deal teacher. Expect to work hard but also learn a lot. I like Mr Hayes!
If your looking to learn, this is the class for you. If you are looking for an easy class, then take a pass(In that case why are you even taking calculus?). Great teacher that tells jokes corny enough to make some laugh and others groan. Explains how and why things are done. Quizzes and tests are brutally graded, math "grammar" being graded.
Not only is he a tough grader but he's super strict about the littlest things. His methods are a little weird to me. All homework won't be collected until the day of the midterm, you have quizzes everyday. It's too scattered and gives out too many papers, it's hard to stay organized if he's giving you unnecessary papers.
This Professor is very Strict with grading. He does teach the subject matter well. However you need to literally memorize all the notes and ways to solve a problem in order to pass the quizzes and tests. I dropped this class because i felt his grading policy was too harsh
First off, I am and have always been very good at math. On the other hand, this was the hardest math class I have ever taken. Its not even college level but this teacher for sure makes it feel that way. I received an A, but had to work extremely hard for it.
I had him for Calc I. It was pretty tough in the beginning and then I got used to his style of teaching and grading. If you want an A you gotta work for it. Brutal grading, sometimes marks the whole problem wrong for one mistake. You have to be perfect in all your annotations. Notes will save you. Homework it not mandatory (still do it though).
He is the worst teacher Ive ever had. He is rude and mean. If you dont get the material and ask a question, he gets mad, doesnt answer your question and makes you feel dumb. He stands by the door looking at his watch and if you are one minute late (YES ONE MINUTE) he doesnt take your homework and gives you a zero. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Do not take this class he is very pick with the way he wants things done. The way he dwals with homework and notes are odd and makes it more difficult. If you are 1 minute late he will not let you in.
He knows the material very well and seems to genuinely want students to get it. However very particular and inflexible. Won't repeat what others have said but just know a lot of time and energy goes into keeping up with all the rules. If you need that time to actual get the content because math isn't your subject, consider taking another teacher
On the one, he is very organized. On the other hand, however, he doesn't enjoy explaining himself. Several times I've raised my hand for explanation only for him to say "see me after class." Also, expect to use your textbook 'til it breaks. His plan seems to be to teach you the basics in class and let you figure the rest out by yourself.
He very strict and unreasonable. Expects students to be in class 15 min early to turn in rewritten class notes. Everything needs to be done his way. Cannot write on the back of the notebook paper, he wont accept it. It wont matter if your answers are right. You will not receive full credit if it if it is not solved the way he wants. He's horrible!!
Do not take this class if you if you are some one who is late because you will lose 5 points for being ONE MINUTE late He does not like to repeat himself if you have a question he'll say "okay we need to move on". You'll have quizzes everyday but he won't grade the homework. He teaches VERY fast and won't slow down if you not understand. I dropped
WORST TEACHER EVER. DONT TAKE HIM. I took his summer class last year and the class started out with about 18-20 kids. When I ended up dropping because of how horribly he taught and graded, there were only 5 kids left including me. FIVE KIDS ONLY. Now I know I ended up dropping his math class, but even I know that percentage is ridiculous. None of his tests are multiple choice and if you don't follow his steps exactly HE WILL MARK IT WRONG. And if you ever ask for help his response is always "Well we need to move on". Does not care if we learn the material or not. I repeat. Do not take him.
I took his class in the summer of 2015 . He is tough but fair. He clearly explains to you what is expected of you and what the consequences will be for not meeting those expectations. He is very organized. He gives you a lot of homework but this is math, so what do you expect. Do not bother taking his class if you're not prepared to work hard.
Very knowledgeable about the subject but strict af. He takes points away on tests for the minimal things. Absolutely flips if he sees a phone out a desk. Class started with about 20-25 kids and there was about 6 including myself left at the end. I had to work hard for my grade
I took his class Fall 2016, he is very organized but a lot of outside studying is required. Notes that are taken in class are to be turned in for a grade, as well as homework. Take this class and this one ONLY, I would not recommend taking any other courses along with this one, too much time and dedication is needed to pass this class.
Best math teacher ever!!!He is really tough on grading, but he explains everything very clearly, leaving no doubt for what he expects from you and how you should do it. If you are looking for a easy course just to pass, forget about him. If you want to actually learn something, he is the best! Also if you like sarcasm, you will find him hilarious!!
He's a really thorough teacher. His lectures are detailed, but you MUST study/practice outside of class to pass. He's a stickler for details. HW is optional, but highly recommended. He's usually free after class to discuss HW/course questions. I think he's a great teacher. I had to work really hard, but I enjoyed class. May not be for everyone.
This guy will beat you over the head with homework and you have rewrite and turn in your class notes for credit. Definitely the hardest class I have ever take. If you're not serious about math and just need to get though it I would highly suggest finding another professor. It was a terrible experience. But I somehow got a C.
HE IS VERY DIFFICULT. Even for an 085 course he challenges every student the same so if you're having a hard time so is everyone else. I had to drop because of a personal illness, but I was DETERMINED to get past this class. He's very meticulous and particular about the way he wants work done. He is NOT a bad teacher he knows his stuff.
He gives great lectures, knows the material well, and makes it really easy to take excellent notes. However, he is picky on tests and will deduct points for any minor error, though he gives partial credit which balances that out. Test corrections are mandatory and don't give improve your grade, rather taking 10% off your test every day late.
Wouldn't recommend taking Hayes. We started with a full class and by the time it was midterm, more than half of the class had dropped the course.
He wants notes as homework assignments so be prepared to give this teacher your all. Full time student and a full time job? Its a struggle to balance his assignments and your personal life. Be aware and prepared
If you pay attention in class and actually study your notes, youll pass. Quizzes are every other day in the beginning and you actually need to study your notes because he takes off for little things. Study and your good. Dont purchase the online book. I never did homework and got a B.

No matter what your circumstances are, avoid Hayes by all means. His goal is to fail you and your job is to struggle against that- well, no thanks. If you don't solve problems in the exact same way as he did he takes off the whole credit, even though your answer is right. Spend hours studying and got a C. Retook it with Jablonski- high A.
For 085 we started as a full class of around 22 ppl, by last day, our class dwindled down to 8 ppl! It's not that he's a bad teacher in any way, it all boiled down to him being extremely specific with grading & format. It was a lot of work & most people don't want to bother with that! He is incredibly smart, I learned so much from him & he's funny!
He talks too fast and he teaches too fast. He goes crazy about phones. Hes VERY SPECIFIC about everything and tutoring doesnt help because its not his way. He shows you instead of teaching us. He expects us to teach ourselves. All questions are asked after class. Also doesnt give out evaluations. From 25 to 8 students. Most have Cs or failing.
I had him for Math 110 and he was really amazing. He starts with a good review of the past course and he build up on a strong foundation. He explains every thing thoroughly and expects the students to show him they learned all the details. He is strict, and he upholds a high standard.
Speaks quickly and seems to get frustrated when you ask him a question. He is very critical of students and does not hesitate to call them out.
Worst teacher ever. Doesnt teach the curve balls he throws on tests and quizzes and secretly wants everybody to fail. He is an awful teacher. Do not at all take him for anything and I do not at all reccommend him as a professor. He is unclear and over-complicates things. Doesnt answer questions at all, like I said, he wants you to stress.
Would not reccomend to take Brian for Mat 131. All class he just does problems over and over on three white boards, and expects you to know everything. He nit picks about every single little thing on tests, and always talks about his pens and how he will mark up your paper if you make a mistake . There are far better Calculus professors.
BORING lectures! He literally writes math problems on the board over and over again for the entire class period. Could hardly hear what he is even saying since he talks so fast and low. You will be taking notes every day and they will be due the next class day. Out of around 20 students more than half dropped his class last fall 2019.
Honestly he is one of THE WORST math professors I have ever had. Its literally all problems and when someone even asks a question its like hes being interrupted from his performance or something. I had a great teachers last semester and before that one too. Then going from him is a whole different ball game its ridiculous. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I think that Mr. Hayes is a phenomenal teacher. He is extremely tough on grading but hey that's math - if you get a calculation wrong as an engineer you might end up taking away peoples lives. If you're okay at math and like it you'll do well in his class.
Although I got all my answers right on my midterm I got an 88 out of 100 because he knocked points for the smallest things during the process of actually getting the answer. He expects you to study notes 24/7. absolutely zero engagement in class from students and he just talks the whole class. Had a rough night? good luck he'll make you fall asleep
Most concepts were derived before we did practice questions on the board. There are probably one to two quizzes per week (I had this class three times a week). There was lots of non-mandatory homework, which I highly recommend doing. The textbook is very technical and extensive, and professor Hayes explained the material in it concisely. Recommend.
i dont usually rate anyone but i wanna save you the trouble and to avoid him. find a different professor. hes a tough grader the kind that will take off points if you dont even circle your answer for test/quizzes. i emailed him a few times and doesnt really respond back. you can get the same kind of teaching from him from watching youtube.
This professor is probably one of the worst that Ive ever had. He IS a tough grader. Anything you write that doesnt make sense and you write for yourself to remember he WILL take off points for them. Say if you were to write the original problem again, he would take points off. He took 4 points off of one problem for me. Do not take his class.

Tough grader. Doesn't look at the right answer, just cares about work, if you got the right answer but didn't show the right work he will take half of the points off. Takes off points. Flies through the notes and does't go back, tells you to rewatch his recording like 100 times. Doesn't teach, just writes on his yellow paper. Boring class.
He has absolutely no sympathetic. Tough grader. I asked for an excused absence due to personal issues beyond school. And still managed to take 10% off my test because I failed to email him and get the test corrections inwhen his class was the last thing on my mind. Do yourself a favor and never take his course. If I could give less than 1 I would.
Tough grader, and not kind or understanding of circumstances. Doesn't teach the math, more so just writes formulas on a board and expects you to comprehend. Hard tests and quizzes. I would not advise taking his class unless you are a math wiz. If not please consider another professor.
Mr. Hayes was a great professor. Homework was used as a tool for your own understanding, to be able to preform optimally on tests and quizzes, which is what made up a majority of your grade. He also makes it very apparent what you need to be able to do for quizzes and tests, so that you aren't blind sided by questions without seeing how to do it.
He was one of those professors you could tell from day 1 that he would be a problem. There are 2 midterms (worth 20% each) and a final worth 30%. The rest of the class is quizzes. Homework does not count as a grade but he still assigns a stupid amount of it. He made a box to put phones in during class and would yell at students if he saw a phone.
Mr. Hayes is one of the rare math teachers that can actually make math fun. He slips in subtle math-related humor to make the class more engaging. Homework is not for a grade, so you need to be ready for quizzes and tests, which make up 95% of the grade. He also tells you what will be on the quizzes/tests based on the homework.
Professor Hayes is an extremely strict grader, however, if you take notes in class and pay attention you will be fine. Often times the notes are nearly identical to quiz and test problems, so there will be no surprise questions. He may be a tough grader, but he clearly lays out what you need to do. Very little student participation.

One of the best professors I have ever had! Yes, he was a tough grader, but he was a phenomenal professor! For every test or quiz, he made it clear what would appear, and the questions were similar to class work. Put in the work and effort, and you will be fine. Class was homework-heavy, but it was never checked; it was more for you to practice.
The best math professor I have ever had in my academic career! This course was not easy but it is not impossible to get an A. My best advice is to create a study group and study the notes everyday. Don't try to miss class because his lectures are long but very useful in regards to information on quizzes and exams (which are your only grades btw).
This is the second time I have taken this professor. He is amazing! I felt this class was taught very well for the fact I took it during the summer. He was very funny and truly helped us all succeed. Everyone I spoke to in that class loved his style of teaching. Pay attention during lectures and study your notes! Homework is not graded :)
He doesn't believe in putting in grades until the final exam. He is super strict you can't even have your phone on the desk. He grades your notes based off neatness and exact everything. A point was taken off for the wrong date being put. He yells at people who look into his classroom while they pass by. Won't allow turn ins after deadline.
Smart guy but super strict. He doesn't take any excuses and is strict on the most random things. He's very particular about formats and doesn't believe in grading until the midterm. Doesn't allow phones at all. So many people drop his class within the first week simply based off his behavior. extremely particular.rude.
Took this class in the spring of 2024. The amount of time you have to put into this class is ridiculous. In the beginning of the semester we had over 20 people and by the end we had about 7-8 people. The material is not hard it's his way of grading and how particular he is on how to do certain problems. Definitely doable if you put in the time.
I have taken AP level math classes in highschool and this is 5x harder. He gets so upset over phones out. He assigns a lot hw. Mid term and final are worth 70% of your grade. You have to do the math his way. I'm gonna try my best to thug it out and study. Wish me luck.
Please avoid this class if you can. No homework—your entire grade depends on a few tests. No flexibility, no partial credit, and effort isn't considered. I have a high GPA and still had to drop it, losing $700. The teaching style is rigid and out of touch. Not worth the stress.
Wow, that was definitely the hardest class I took at Triton. Class started with 30 people and ended with 8. My advice is to avoid this class but if you can't be ready to study all the time in preparation for the quizzes and exams. Good luck everyone, you will need it.
He will take a point off for ANYTHING, even if you get the answer right. If you are going into this class switch teachers immediately.
Great professor. If you are serious about STEM this is the professor you should be taking to prepare you for higher courses.

If you take this class be ready to give up 4 months of your life studying just to barely scrape by and he is the most petty grader takes off points for writing the formula down and your whole grade relies on 4 tests and some quizzes and gives lots of homework that Does not count for a grade.
