he sucked

Hentschel gives me EXTREME anxiety - he is a horrible and RUDE professor that does not spark anybody's passion in ecology/biology at all. Although the course itself is not too difficult, Hentschel made it excruciatingly painful, unpleasant, and boring. Horrible learning environment.

He's just rude. Avoid if possible.

he is the worst human being, i think he is over compensating for something. he keeps pausing in class and starting at students to like intimidate them, he flashes a laser pointer at students, and all over just awful. You are not going to learn anything in his class, he literally reads his own slides.

I would say he has to be one of the absolute worst teachers i have had in my time at SDSU. He has no passion for the subject he teaches, and literally just reads off his own slides. He makes his exams exceedingly hard, making you memorize the tiniest facts, and berates the entire class for not being "smart enough" when the average is a 53%. Avoid!!

I don't normally feel strongly enough about a professor to write a review but let me tell you this prof is a real pain. He has a very immature way of calling people out in class for being on a laptop and wastes so much of class with his monotone, super slow lecturing. He has no passion for the subject and makes the test MUCH harder than needed.

He is probably the worse teacher I have ever had. He berates students in class and tells us we're not trying hard enough when the class average on a test is 50%. He is extremely monotone and has a way of making something that is interesting sound so boring, he does not teach he just reads off his slides and expects you to remember everything! Avoid

Absolutely, by all means, do NOT take this class. The tests are near impossible to pass and his lectures are incredibly boring. He "intimidates" students in class like a weird uptight high school teacher and its embarrassing to say the least (he ran up to a student to shut their laptop during lecture one time). Worst professor at state.

A really, really terrible professor that leaves students heavily confused at the end. The only real purpose of going to the lectures are the iclicker quizzes, anything else is worthless as you wont be retaining any information from his teaching. Learning about animals should have been interesting but he pretty much ruined it. Avoid if you can!

I was motivated to go and make sure that this prof. had a bad review by yours truly. - unprofessional and rude to students and disruptive to learning environment - monotone and puts next-to-no effort into his lecture slides - little to no communication and the worst professor I have encountered - I COULD GO ON FOR DAYS

I've never felt so strongly for a professor before. He doesn't care about what he's teaching, he spends more time trying to call out students who are doing other things than paying attention to his boring lectures. Please avoid this guy if you can, you'll be doing yourself a favor.

I looked forward to the second half of bio204 because of high praise by previous students who had prof. EKDALE. After his first lecture, I have dreaded coming to class (clicker attendance). Hentschel has done nothing but discourage, humiliate, and outright blame students and technology for low averages. He does not realize that HE is the PROBLEM.

Gives no guidelines or study guide for tests. Cares more about getting students in trouble than teaching them. Talks slow, extremely boring.

He is a TERRIBLE professor- without a doubt the worst professor I have ever encountered and quite possibly one of the worst humans. All he cares about is getting students in trouble and humiliating them in front of the class for laptop use or talking. He just reads off his slides and blames his 50% test average on us. Absolutely avoid at ALL costs

If we were to make a tier list of the professors at SDSU this dude would be garbage tier. Literally the worst professor I have ever had during my time at this school. His tests are insanely hard compared to the 1st half of the Bio204 course and somehow his lectures are even more boring. Only post I've ever made on RMP and I did it cuz he sucks much

No professor has irked me to the point of writing an RMP until this one. The topics for the 2nd half of the class should have been very interesting but this guy just butchered it with his monotone voice, attitude, and overall horrible teaching style. He expects students to know every little detail and gives no effort in answering student questions

OK basically I want to chop his ponytail off for multiple reasons. 1st being that he gives poor study tips, so poor that average exam 1 score was 50%. He thinks that is ok just bc one student/transformer scored 100%. 2nd, he's extremely condescending and seems to enjoy degrading students. Lastly, some lecture info doesn't match the text #concerned

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. Expects you to know every single thing he lectures. One question on the exam was which group had the least amount of species?! Average for 1st exam was 53%. No curve. Terribly boring lectures as he reads directly off of his PowerPoints and adds no enthusiasm. Class isn't hard if you study for tests. Attendance is only mandatory because he uses clickers. He is very condescending and also makes extremely inappropriate jokes that make all students very uncomfortable. Avoid him if you can, but usually not possible!

This guy is so rude to students and should not be a teacher!!! You do not need this kind of negativity in your life so stay away!!! In addition to 1000000 hw assignments and clicker points, he tests very hard so it will be a struggle to get a good grade. Probably one of the worst teachers I've ever had just by how rude he is.

Just don't!! Avoid this professor if possible. He is rude to students & lectures are very boring. His exam are extremely hard!!! Go to lecture to get the clicker points and do the assignments so you at least have an opportunity of passing the class.

Hentschel is one of the worst professors I have ever encountered. He makes jokes that just makes the class uncomfortable, is very monotone, and is one of the rudest human beings I have ever encountered. Try and avoid taking his classes, you honestly won't learn anything and will hate your life. I've never despised a prof so much until I had him.

If i could give him a 0/5 i would. Hands down the worst professor I have ever taken. Takes semi interesting material and finds a way to make it boring. Rude to students. Class average for a test was 50%, you have to know EVERYTHING, because he refuses to provide study guides/hints.

The first half of this class was taught by Dr. Lluvia Flores Renteria (who is amazing!!), the second half is taught by Hentschel. Professor Hentschel is one of the worst professors I have encountered at state. He is mean to his students, teaches such an interesting topic in such a boring way, and makes inappropriate jokes. Very toxic experience

Probably the WORST professor you will ever experience in your college life. He has no regard for the learning environment of students as he just reads off slides without further elaboration and gives no effort to answering questions. He endangers student safety by pointing lasers at their face. A disgrace to professors everywhere. Please avoid him!

MOST AWFUL PROFESSOR EVER!!! Do not, and I mean DO NOT take him. I have had bad professors in the past, but this is a professor who genuinely does not care about his students one bit. Would rather cause anxiety and stress than help. Gets mad at us when we leave bc he goes past the class time and test is nothing like hw or clicker questions. AVOID.

Worst professor I have had in my entire undergraduate career. Incredibly rude, arrogant and disrespectful to students. He is a horrible lecturer and his exams do not reflect the lecture material at all. Has no desire to help students learn and instead derives pleasure from making inappropriate jokes and embarrassing students in front of the class.

Mandatory attendance. With each lecture he posts an outline of terms you need to know EVERYTHING about (300-400/test). He then procedes to ask unnecessarily specific test questions regarding specific animals he covered for about 10 seconds in lecture. 50% class average on first test. No study guides, assuming its bc he knows theyd be useless anyway

It seemed that "Dr." Hentschel developed an unsettling hatred for our 300 student lecture because a handful of students used their phones or laptops during his deathly monotone and uninspired lectures. This left the entire class suffering for the remainder of the semester, as "Dr." Hentschel is less a doctor/professor and more an insecure bully.

Don't ever take your friends clicker into class or use your laptop/phones/speak. He is a bully and rather spend lecture making the entire 300 student body anxious and uncomfortable than take time into teaching and helping us. He is condescending and flat out mean and his tests are incredibly hard. Don't bother asking questions, he won't answer them

Take this class with literally ANYONE else. Avoid him at all costs. wait for the semester when Ekdale is teaching. His tests are ridiculously hard with no guide of what to study and on top of it he makes the entire class feel stupid for not knowing the material. Don't ever talk or even breathe wrong in his class or he'll call you out for it.

If you are easily triggered by sexual references please do not take a class with him. He made many people feel uncomfortable with his phallic jokes up to the point where people skipped class. He also placed TAs to catch anyone who had additional clickers, so you will want to make every class. Do yourself a favor and take this course with Ekdale.

He was the worst teacher I have ever had in all my years of school. His lectures were extremely boring and he read straight from the slides. He was passive aggressive as well as degrading towards the entire class, he essentially called us stupid. Exams were impossibly hard with no study guide or guidance to prepare yourself. Truly an awful teacher

Worst class I've ever experienced. He is rude, boring, and enjoys degrading students and blaming them for failing his tests when the average was 50% with no curve. He makes way too many sexual jokes and doesn't allow laptops or phones in lecture AT ALL. No study guides for exams that are insanely hard and way too specific. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Extremely hard class, don't understand how he expects us to learn all this information and then make his exams EXTREMELY specific and difficult. If you were to cheat and try using your notes, you would definitely still fail. Wouldn't recommend at all. He is very rude and doesn't seem to care much about his students

Hes super demeaning, does not care about his students at all. His exams are too specific and not fair game at all. Really uses his tenured status to his advantage to make you wonder how you made it to college. He literally gives me depression, avoid him at all costs.

This man goes out of his way to make the tests incredibly difficult. He uses groups of animals that were hardly discussed in class as multiple choice options on the test. So, if you study your notes you will still feel extremely unconfident. Did not show any compassion for classes going online. Get deathly sick and ask for a hw extension? "Too bad"

Median Final Exam average 62.8%. Directly from the email he sent us after grading the final, "Students might wonder if Exam 4, which was more difficult than the previous three exam will be "graded on a curve". The answer is no." Good luck with this required class!

Sure he may be knowledgeable, but he boasts it in a sense where his teachings do not correlate to tests or any kind of useful info students need to excel in any STEM major. awful. terrible. not sure why this dude seems to have a hatred for teaching and for all of his students. assumes the worst of students and won't tolerate any deviations. miss class with valid excuse? doesn't care and won't give you the info on what you missed. need clarification for a test? no study guide is given. not a pleasant teacher and sdsu won't remove him

prefer taking this course with anybody else. Do not take this professor if you don't want to memorize everything. The average for his classes is C which is crazy. beware beware

The worst professor I have ever taken at SDSU. never met a teacher who is excited to set up students to fail. To even attend office hours you had to ask questions that he hadn't answered yet, so no asking for clarity. made the class extra hard in an online format but gave students no extra help. Never take him or expect to fail the class.

Some ppl complain tests are too crazy/specific. Definitely right in some aspects, but in others, no. Like 25-50% of questions on big exams came from prior quizzes (which had 2 attempts). Read textbook for first half of his part, skip second half. Frequent, short-burst studying is your bff. Student-unfriendly, uncaring prof. Used Respondus.

If you can, even if you need to take an extra semester, avoid taking one of his classes. He'll tell you that you can get a C by doing everything except the tests, this is true. However, if you're a bio major, you can't do pass or no pass. His tests questions are not covered in lecture and due dates will be mid day, NOT 11:59, no exceptions.

This class made me feel stupid along with the lab. He has really high expectations which I only believe I could achieve if I treated this class as a full time job. Average of the class= C, so make sure to do well on exams. He tries to be funny and get our attention in lecture but its impossible with this tone and the way we felt about this class.

Just no. His exams are so difficult because he choses such irrelevant/insignificant details to test you on. You don't have to read the textbook but he mentions that the lectures don't cover all of what is on the exam, so it is good to do so. Not to mention, he just does not care about his student and will give you no sympathy for ANYTHING.

If you are looking for an easy chill lab senior year, this class is not it. Everyone ends up falling asleep in this class. Lectures are tough and not engaging and labs ARE pointless. He grades insanely hard and expects you to memorize every detail from 18–20 pg articles on top of lec + labs. As a 4-unit class, it can really hurt your GPA. AVOID.

If you want to have 50 question, 50 min tests and be tested on memorizing multiple 10-20 page research articles + everything in the lectures, then this course/professor is for you! DONT take this class even if you are actually interested in marine bio. Mostly everyone does bad on the exams (shocker) and no curves. Straight up a GPA terrorist

He's rude condescending, and belittles students for not instantly understanding the material. Takes points off & extremely hard grader. Class is 5 H Mon, 1 H Wed + 2 more for lab groups - unbelievable. Impossible exams, mid-day deadlines, and expects undergrads to design full research experiments with little guidance. His smile creeped me out.

Do yourself a favor and read the other reviews. Major red flag. Please do not risk your time and effort for this class just to get a "C". He doesn't believe in student success and loves to see students fail. Does not care at all and thinks his class is the "best". After all these negative reviews, I do not know how he is still a professor.

Just like the other reviews said, majority of this class was UNBELIEVABLY hard. The material is not hard and the class itself should not be He just has a way of making everything overly difficult and complicated for no reason. Please do not take this class even if it's your last choice. There are so many other options, wait a sem or wtv. PLZ.
