By far, Prof. Herlocker became my favorite professor at Moorpark. He is a very sharp communicator, so the concepts were easy to learn, fun to discuss, and the conversations never became political (which I really appreciated). I left each class having had fun and realized that I'd learned something too. By far the most fun I've ever had in a class.
Professor Herlocker is one of the best teachers Ive ever had. The class was really enjoyable and the discussions were always really deep and stimulating. The points were well spread out (3 tests, online quizes, written essay) so the tests werent too high pressure. His lectures were always interesting and I looked forward to every class.
The tests were fair and everything was covered in the study guides. Most classes were a lecture and a class discussion, both were always really fun to listen to/participate in. I learned a lot about philosophy in this class, but he also taught some basic logic which really helped me in my other classes. Highly recommend him and his class!
Awesome class and awesome teacher! Mr. Herlocker was one of the best lecturers I've ever had and I never got bored in class. The tests and quizzes were fair and he helped me with the final essay so it wasn't too overwhelming.
Really fun class. Most days we had a quick powerpoint or a presentation on the whiteboard and they were always super interesting. Afterwards we usually got a few minutes to meet in small groups and discuss the presentation, then had a bigger class discussion. This class really makes you think and Mr. Herlocker is a really really fun teacher.
Mr. Herlocker is my favorite teacher at moorpark so far! He is super caring and always was helpful in his office. The class was very clear grading wise, 1 big quiz and 2 exams and some other stuff that helped buffer the test grades. I always went in for office hours before and he helped me review and always did well on the tests!
I was dreading to take this class personally because I never had interest in philosophy but after a few days of attending this class I loved it. This professor is so smart, funny and makes everything so much more interesting. The quizzes are easy if you study and other than that theres no homework. Quite some reading but not more than average.
After taking philosophy twice before I knew no matter what class I took the third time would be my last time at MC, but it was definitely meant to be with Brian, not only did I walk out of the class with positivity towards a passing grade, but I left with an experience that only Brian could give, he truly cares for the aspect of teaching.
If you're already familiar with philosophy his class is pretty easy, if not definitely take M01 with him first. He's a great guy but just a little unorganized, and you only have 2 exams and 1 quiz the whole semester so just show up, take notes, and participate. Otherwise, he's a super chill guy and you learn a lot in his class
Took his online Philosophy class and thought it was great. His powerpoints definitely help you understand the philosophers and get you ready for the exams. Would recommend, very accessible outside of class.
Hands down one of my favorite classes I had taken. Very caring & thoughtful professor. Before real lectures begin he will give you a taste of logic, which is meant to help you become a more critical thinker. What I took from this class is still used in everyday life. From someone who has pretty spotty attendance, you won't want to miss this class.
Its a good online Philosophy class however, the tests are proctored and it feels creepy being monitored through your computer so it makes test taking stressful and anxious.
very difficult, I decided to take this class because of the good reviews but his online classes seem to be the worst. He is a very tough grader and is stingy on his exams which are Proctored!!! the exam questions are in essay format so its not easy to pass. I have taken Philosophy classes before and he is the worst would not recommend.
I took professor Herlocker for intro to ethics, it was an online class and so I expected it to be very heavy on the reading, and it is, but the textbooks are cheap, the material itself is somewhat hard to understand, but he provides summaries on them with explanations. Do the discussions, read the books, and you'll do fine on the exams.
I tried his online course. He isnt a bad professor but Ethics is the most boring class I've ever had. I couldn't focus on the text for more than 5min. The entire first book from Plato was a million words just to say it is better to have bad happen to you than it is for you to be bad to someone else. Ethics seems to be common moral sense to me...
I took Professor Herlocker's Intro to Philosophy class. Several online quizzes based on the online reading. You'll need to write a several page essay. One midterm and one final. The final was completely written( fill in the blank/essay questions) and you must study hard to earn your grade. A challenging class that makes you work for your grade.
ProfessorHerlocker is knowledgeable about the subject, but he is not the best at explaining or engaging students. His lectures mainly consist of him debating students, then asking class to get into groups and discuss the question he was just debating with a student. Then, you take quizzes and tests from an online book that wasnt ever used in class
I took prof. Herlocker's intro to ethics online class, and let me tell you, I had to work for my A. Keep on top of your weekly readings and his lecture summaries, and you'll do fine. Bumped my grade up the 1% to the next letter which was very kind. Pay attention to his feedback on lectures, he notices who follows his critics and will help you out.
I actually can't believe the earlier student who said that he isn't good at explaining or engaging his students. That is truly unbelievable. He is honestly the best teacher I have ever had hands down. His lectures were mind-blowing and incredibly interesting. That was clearly just an angry student who didnt' get the grade they wanted. Easy A
Truly a gifted prof. I really really loved his class. I started taking a diff prof and dropped. So I was surprised at how much I looked forward to this class each day. Kind prof and not difficult
Professor Brian was an awesome teacher. He cares about his students and he wants the best for them, not only in class but in life. He has much more passion for what he does then honestly any other teacher I've taken at Moorpark College. To top it off, the class is easy. If you simply pay a little bit of attention, you will get an A.
Really an awesome prof. Cant say enough good things. Friendly and insightful. You wont be sorry if you take his class. I always looked forward to it
Im not sure why you would take anyone else for philosophy at moorpark. I really liked this guy. He was funny, passionate and super interesting. I loved our in class discussions. Really made me think (which beats constant lecturing). Not a hard class either. Not a blow off. But fair
Incredible class and incredible professor. One of those classes where you go in just to fill a requirement and then come out seriously considering switching your major from finance to philosophy.
Professor Herlocker is a gem and if you are planning on taking Philosophy he is a must take. Extremely knowledgeable and always available for out of class help. A great guy as well.
Professor Herlocker went above and beyond my expectations, especially for an online course. He is extremely thorough and fair. The religious philosophy material was very difficult but somehow, through his excellent teaching, I got it! When I didnt put enough effort into discussions, he noticed and asked more from me. Hes very conscientious.
This class is not hard. 2-3 tests (w/ study guide) and 3 online posts where you analyze primary texts and basically summarize them. Follow the forum instructions TO THE LETTER. U can Sparknotes the forum posts, just google "X Book Quotes" and use those as evidence to back up your summaries. Raise your hand 4-5 times in the term and you're good.
Very interesting class, learned a lot. Professor provides a "summary and clarificaiton" on reading material that is extremely helpful in studying and taking exams. Do the work and you'll get an A
Really great teacher. Had a deep love of what taught and knew exactly how to explain it. Learned so much in that class.
Professor Herlocker is one of the best professors I've had. He leads a genuinely fun class environment and forces you to think outside of your mindset and discuss with your peers. He is very open to opinions and available to have some amazing conversations even after class. He cares about his students and has a great sense of humor.
He is a very caring Professor but it is very discussion heavy. Quizzes are not too hard since they are online. He likes to know the student's thoughts during class discussions but sometimes group discussions go for too long. Would highly recommend for PHILM01.
HE WILL MARK DOWN YOUR ATTENDANCE GRADE EVEN IF YOU ARE SICK AND EMAIL HIM BEFOREHAND!!!!
I love meeting with the Prof. outside of class. VERY accessible to reach out to outside of class. Do get ready to read lots of heavy material. If you work hard in this class, you will most certainly pass the course. I loved talking to this teacher about life. Very open to any comment or argument I made in and out of class. DO take this teacher.
Mr. Herlocker is your Professors favorite Professor. His Philosophy Class is 95% lectures and you are responsible for taking notes and doing the online quizzes. As long as you show up, pay attention, and participate you'd have a good chance of passing, not because he is easy but because he's very good and teaching, his lectures are second to none.
Professor Herlocker was one of the best Ive had at Moorpark College. He cares a lot about his students and makes himself available outside of class. You can tell he enjoys teaching Philosophy. In order to get the most out of this class be open to discussions and participating.
The class was online and the modules were well organized. The textbook that is required for this class was very hard to understand and at times I found better notes researching online but if you base his quiz and exams on his powerpoints, you should be good. Only downfall is the recorded exams to make sure you arent cheating. Creepy!!
Awesome teacher! One of the best teachers I've had at Moorpark. He's really even in presenting both sides of the argument (even if in a class like Philosophy of Religion) and only revealed his position at the end. Intelligent. Makes you think and makes philosophy compelling especially on such an significant topic as this one. Highly recommended!
I might be biased because Philosophy is a tough subject for me, but his classes didn't feel particularly helpful. I had to do most of the learning on my own. The nail in the coffin for me was the weird recorded lectures. It felt invasive and SUPER unnecessary. If you don't think you'll have a problem with it now, you probably will when you see it.
I took this class on western religion online, and this professor clearly knows how to teach an online class. He posts PowerPoints with audio attached to them so that you can hear him explain things. Tests are virtually proctored and not open book, but he gives a study guide. 3 discussions, 3 quizzes, 3 proctored exams, and 1 1000-1500 word paper.
Not the best, not the worst. I took it online, so I didn't experience the "amazing lectures" that other reviews talk about. I wish he had reached out with the welcome letter/syllabus earlier. When we got our first message from him, we already had assignments due the next day. The proctoring software he requires seems very shady.
Definitely take him in an in-class setting. His in person lectures are interesting & he makes it easy to understand. However, his online teaching is different. The zoom lectures are less clear than in person & may be more confusing. All exams are taken through Proctorio. A lot of discussions, midterm and final, and a final paper.
This professor was awesome in my opinion. All the instructions are straight forward. This class requires a lot of reading in order to do well on the discussions and exams. The content is very interesting. He also clarifies all the readings you do in the class, so the content is made a little easier to understand. Personally, I enjoyed the class.
Gives clear directions. Feedback was prompt and informative. Was always available for questions. Explained the philosophers in a way that was easy to understand. Would definitely recommend his class!
Professor Herlocker is an amazing teacher. He knows philosophy very well and is enthusiastic with his teaching. I am in an online course currently, with no zoom meetings, but he still kindly holds weekly office house. He does use Proctario for his tests, so you must know the material very well to succeed. I love his class and am actually learning.
This is the most boring class, I took this professor online so but I will say that he is caring and is easy to reach in his office hours. First off, he didn't provide lectures for the class until late October, so the class was self taught in my opinion. Secondly, he uses proctorio which records you while taking exams which is super creepy.
This class was 100% the highlight of my semester. Steady but easy to digest readings accompanied by really helpful lectures that aren't overkill like the other online classes. Most times I'd use the lectures as a podcast or enjoy it as if I'm watching youtube. TLDR: Gives you space to learn. And you'll prob walk away with some good tools for life.
Professor Herlocker is a very detailed, caring and genuinely knowledgeable instructor. I took his intro to philosophy course otherwise known as PHIL M01, and I always felt that he was highly interested in giving nothing less than an informative, engaging course. His lesson plans never failed to be understandable, intriguing and thought provoking.
Professor Herlocker is a great man. He gives plenty of feedback and is available outside of class if you have questions. Read the content provided before the lectures it helps you understand the material better. If you want an A, watch all the videos and take notes on everything even if there isnt a quiz. Mr. Herlocker is my favorite professor.
He is a good teacher, just follow the lectures and take notes. Also go through the entire study guides for the midterm and final... it's a lot but memorize it.
Prof. Herlocker is easily the best Philosophy professor I've had and really sets the bar up high for pedagogical standards. I wish more professors at larger universities took notes from him. I took M01, M02, and M08 with him, with M02 being online. Online classes are fine and all, but once everything opens up, take an in-person class with him.
This was one of the most fun classes I've taken so far. Prof. Herlocker is available via email, or Zoom and is always willing to help. I learned so much in this class and really enjoyed the lectures. Prof. Herlocker cares about his students, that his students are able to understand the material and gain lifelong knowledge.
By far WORST professor I've ever had. He does not leave feedback and doesn't grade assignments till months later. He also forgets to post study guides until the last minute. Save your time and take this class with another professor.
2 exams and 1 paper added up to nearly 70% of our grade. Exams were closed book, closed notes, and proctored!!! Luckily he graded holistically. We barely had any discussions and also learned by watching recorded lectures of his from April of 2020. COVID sucks but I think he could have done more. Despite that, still an overall positive experience.
Prof. Herlocker is a difficult grader (I got 8/10 on my introductory discussion becuase I did not cite MY PERSONAL LIFE). You have to rent/purchase a lot of books, which are difficult to read. His discussion questions are difficult and he is a hard grader.
Herlocker is a great professor. I highly recommend you take his in-person classes because he seems really passionate about teaching. His lectures are all online and the grading is mainly based on quizzes and a paper. He does use proctorio for his final exams which is a bit sketchy but it's okay.
Prof. Herlocker is clear about what assignments he wants to be done but he is a tough grader. He gives minimal lectures and powerpoints, then makes the tests closed book, closed note, and protorcted. My introduction was graded low for not citing sources, I do not know what sources to cite for my life. I did not learn anything from this class.
Really enjoyed his class. He is very knowledgeable about philosophy. Don't take this class if you aren't genuinely interested in philosophy, as it is not a show up and pass class--you have to work for your grade. If you take notes on lectures and study for the midterm/final, you'll pass. If you do the work, you can get an A. Would 100% take again.
He's alright ig even though i had an A the whole semester until the final :') but hes stuff is literally based on crash course episodes but the hw is easy the essay was moderately easy and his tests are semi hard he uses proctorio so u cant... ya know... but the final killed me lol
Awful professor, inattentive to students and nonresponsive to questions. Doesn't grade most of the work until the last week of the semester so you have no idea how you are actually doing in the class or what you need to work on to improve. Leaves little to no feedback on discussions or tests. Does not reply to emails and will not actually teach.
Brian Herlocker is by far the worst lecturer I've ever had in my academic career. He transforms an ordinary class into the worst experience of your academic career. Some of his discussion threads are also useless for learning. While marking an easy exam, he taught me nothing and was incredibly disrespectful. Best wishes.
One of my favorite professors I've had. He treats his students like people, and even extended a couple due dates per our request. He makes it very clear what he is looking for on tests and quizzes, and gives very informative lectures and encourges discourse. Class feels guided by the students, and if you study and take notes you will pass.
I took this class thinking it was going to be easy. It requires a lot of reading and understanding. He puts clarifications up but no PP. tests are all up to how much you understood the material because some questions really catch you off guard. Personally the material is interesting and if you really want to dive into it, I say go for it.
A professor who is genuinely passionate about his subject and teaching: the information was personally interesting to me and I would say he has an engaging personality and teaching style consisting of lecture and debate. There was manageable assigned reading and only 3 major assignments being, a final exam, a final paper, and a group project.
Professor Herlocker is a great professor and his discussions are always very interesting. He tries very hard to help his students understand the concepts he is explaining and always leaves room for questions without being condescending. He does seem depressed but gives a very manageable workload and is a great teacher.
I took this class in the spring and am just now getting aroudn to reviewing it, but I have to say it was one of the best classes I've ever taken. Such good in class discussions and debates and his lectures were truly awesome. He's also a really nice guy. He was very open to talking to me in his office hours and was friendly and open.
Professor Herlocker is great teacher, but his class just wasn't for me. His classes were entirely discussion based. You are graded by participating, which was tough considering I was lost for half the semester. I left classes confused because the information was very hard to retain. It felt like we talked about nothing for the whole hour
I took him online and wish I would've taken him in person because this man's lectures are amazing. We had access to very few throughout the course but he explained everything so clearly that the hard readings didn't seem as hard anymore. It is a very discussion heavy class and most of your grade will be based off that. Exams are also proctored.
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Herlocker's class. Originally, I wasn't too thrilled about needing to take this course as part of my degree requirement as I believed it wasn't going to align with my interests. Now, after completing the course I put it among the best courses I've taken in my college route. 5 stars ! I recommend this course for all.
Signing up for this class I thought it would be a breeze but the teacher assigns so much homework and is not organized. He recently just assigned a paper that is due during finals week ( basically in a week), if he had posted it before hand I would have organized my time more correctly.
Hated this class online. Lectures were long and boring, but necessary to watch. Tests are recorded, and no notes are allowed; they were very difficult. He grades very tough on discussion posts, and takes his time with grading. Make sure to watch the review lecture before any tests. Avoid this class online if possible. It was HARD to get an A.
Honestly, probably the best professor I've ever had. I only took it because I need a humanities crediit, but it ended up being so incredibly interesting and insightful and he was kind to me when I had an issue come up. Take him in person if possible. You'll be glad you did.
I love his teaching style, it was very helpful for tests with full summaries of each chapter and videos going over everything. BEWARE THOUGH, he's a VERY tough grader. There was very few assignments so if you got one bad grade you were kinda cooked. Also, most questions in tests AREN'T multiple choice, they're short paragraph answers.
Don't take this class with this professor! He is not understanding and will not answer emails and will not help you when you need it. I took this for gen ed and he didn't answer or put comments on anything I did wrong. I use to enjoy philosophy but this class made me hate it. It has nothing to do with philosophy. All he cares about is Plato.
Very interesting class and professor! Took this class for credit. He was very nice, lectures are informational, readings were interesting. Had quizzes based on lectures and readings everyday though which was a lot but it's summer courses. He uses proctorio so be aware of that, final paper due at the end of the course. Overall not bad! Barely an A.
Good teacher, really strict grader. Tests are FRQ, closed note, & you need to really understand the philosophers to do well. STUDY LECTURE VIDEOS & SUMMARY/CLARIFICATION! Discussion posts & final essay are IMPORTANT—don't slack. Quote lecture videos a ton in discussion posts & essay. Hard class, but possible to do good if you dedicate time to it.
Good professor overall. Very lecture heavy, so be prepared to watch a lot of lectures that may not always be the most entertaining. The midterm and final are easy if you use the study guide, but study a lot and take notes on all the lectures.
I failed this class becuase I wasn't prepared for the abundance of reading and lectures I also didn't put the effort in which resulted in me falling behind and losing motivation. Professor Herlocker is very nice, fair, and he respects his syalbus. I personanly wouldn't take his online course again but I think I would enjoy it if it was in person
Professor Herlocker is not a good teacher, the lectures are hours long and there are probably 20 through the course. The discussion assignments by far dropped my grade the most, even if you meet all requirements in the rubric you'll still get an 8/10 with little to no feedback on how to improve. Avoid if possible. Professor Morgan was much better.
50% of your grade is exams. Uses proctorio for all exams, so know your stuff. Closed book and notebook exams. Not really a lot of homework but expectations are unrealistic. Personally I got a good grade but I would not recommend anyone to take his class.
Brian Herlocker is a very caring professor. He wants all his students to succeed. He is understanding, and will take time out of his day to meet with people. His class is hard, but worth it. He is very knowledgeable of the material, and you can tell he has a passion for teaching. I would take his class again. Great guy.
I took an online class with this professor. He would take forever to grade the assignments and no matter how good you thought you did on the discussions he would always give you 8/10, nothing higher. He responds to the emails and gives you opportunities to redo your work, but like I said, he takes forever to grade and is a very tough grader.
Professor Herlocker was an amazing teacher. There was a lot of lecture with somewhat dense information. Open note quizzes for each lecture (or couple of lectures). Some reading assignments that weren't terrible. Overall, Herlocker became one of my favorite professors. His class was very inspirational and has changed how I think and view life.
Professor Herlocker is a very nice guy, but when it comes to his class and grading, he's extremely harsh and absolutely unrealistic. that is once you get your grade of course, cause that'll likely take about a month after each assignment. be ready to wait 2 weeks after your final for your paper grade and class grade. this is a warning… don't take
Good guy and a good teacher, he cares a lot about his subject matter and is very knowledgeable about it. I took him in person and he really wants engagement. He can be a little disorganized but he's reasonable and enjoyable to learn from.
