class is boring, a million different directions at once, tests long and hard
the tests are hard!
Where is the consistency, stick to agenda.
His tests are very challenging, but want you to work hard and succeed
Great intructor, great person...cool and hot
This guy knows his stuff, respects students, makes class fun, and will work as hard for you as you work for him. I highly recommend him!
Hard tests. Nice person and no busywork.
great guy, lots of info. hard tests.... *i'm gettin a c*
Hard tests. Hard to stay awake in his class...
He is very considerate and helpful. He knows his stuff and doesn't mind being challenged on points of view. Fun!! Great Job dr. Hesse COWABUNGA!
This guy is the best govt teacher the univ. has. he will work for you if you work for him. he is tough but very fair.
Easy on the eyes. Challenging on the brain. If you have to take Government, this guy is the one to take. His class is informative but fun.
Tough, but fair. Interesting. Don't mind going to class.
very hard, but very interesting. COWABANGA Dr. Hesse!
Great Teacher!!!
Funny young teacher, who is helpful.
the best government teacher at Northwest!
Good guy, good prof. Hard grading, but the class is interesting. Don't hesitate to take the class....also has great stories.
Great teacher. Young and spunky. Very helpful. Take notes and go to class and you will get a good grade.

A very fun class. It is quite a bit of work, and kind of tough, but it is fun and very interesting. You will do fine if you go to class and take notes, and also be sure to read outside reading.
If you actually want to learn something... take him. There are only a few extra assignments you can do, so you grade is basically based off of your tests. His tests are very hard too!!
100 questions = 100 points, 80 of them are straightforward. The final essay was harshly graded considering that you pull in no outside sources than lecture.
Take notes and study them, tests aren't that bad. He makes the class interesting and fun. Easy going funny guy with good stories to tell. Not much homework at all.
This man is awesome! I never had an interest in gov't before, it bored me. I don't miss this class! I love it. He applies the material to life and really makes you think. Take him, you'll learn more than you ever expected to in a Gen Ed class!
best teacher at Northwest. really cares about his students and works hard to make learning interesting. i would take him for as many classes as i could. additionally, he is very cultured and tells awesome stories about places he's been. ex: Africa very cool.
He makes his classes really interesting. Talks more about real issues vs using the book. His tests are all mulitiple choice and he's not bad looking!
Hesse is a great guy that really applies what he teaches to our everyday lives. Keeps things interesting and really makes you want to come to class. I recommend his class to anyone. COWABUNGA!
This man is remarkable. He is not only a pleasure to look at, but it is not bad to listen to him either. He is insightful and very will cultured. You will learn a lot from him.

Wow. I think I might take this class again just because its the best class i've ever had here. If you take your phone to class he will answer it. One time he answered a girls phone and it was her dad and he told her dad (before he knew it was her dad) that she was up dancing on the bar! hahahahaha BEST CLASS EVER TAKE TAKE TAKE!!!
Best teacher I've had. He's young and tries to make it fun and interesting. He had us laughing everyday about one thing or another. He's also really good looking, so that's a plus!;)
One of the best professors I have ever had. Keeps class interesting and makes it worth going to.
Dr. Hesse is the best professor I've had here so far. I learned so much in a class I thought would be insanely boring. He is energetic and excited about what he teaches, and it rubs off on the students. His tests and essays are challenging, but he's always willing to help you succeed.
This class was amazing... i want to take it again just so i can have him as a teacher. He was so good i even considered changing my major b/c my interest went up that much.
I love Hesse, he's soo much fun to have in class! When I started this class I wasn't interested at all and now i'm starting to notice things more and becoming interested! However, this class is not easy the tests 100 multiple choice which wouldn't be so bad if the questions weren't so detailed! He is willing to help you out though so thats a plus.
Great Teacher!! He is so funny and CUTE! I hate history and politics, but he made the class worth while! If you go to class and do the work you'll get the grade you work for. He really tries to make the topic interesting- and he even made me want to go to Africa...someday! Hes great! I recommend him to anyone!
Hesse is an awesome teacher. I am not a fan of gov't but he managed to make this class interesting. Just go to class everyday, take good notes, and at least do the ecompanion readings and you should do ok. He also gives a ton of extra credit to balance some of the difficulty of his tests. Worth taking. Hesse is the best government teacher at NW
Amazing!!! Take him!!!!
Fairly easy class. Just go to class everyday and really pay attention. BEST Government professor at Northwest hands down! Loves the material he teaches.
Hesse is all over his stuff and he genuinely tries to keep class interesting. Best teacher at Northwest.
Well taught class. Easy to get behind if you miss a day, but Dr. Hesse keeps it interesting enough that you won't want to miss. Great class, I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.
Most energetic government teacher i've ever had. really keeps your attention for a 70 minute class. be sure to go to class every day, take detailed notes, read the eCompanion readings and you should do okay. final is essay so prepare for that in advance
Very intersted, but hard grader
Dr. Hesse may deviate from the lecture material occasionally, but it's all in the interest of blowing your mind. He's an excellent, enthusiastic & talented professor.
Great teacher, currently taking this class right now, and it was extremely interesting. By far one of the best teachers i've ever had. And he is extremely BEAUTIFUL! so that keeps you motivated to come to class ;).
Very enthusiastic and helpful teacher. Manages to keep his opinions out of his lessons. He grades kind of hard, but you learn a lot so take him if you want to do something other than just scrape by.
If you do one thing in college, take a Hesse course. His classes are interesting, engaging, and provoking. You get what you paid for in terms of credit (and beyond). One of his classes may make stomaching other sub-par professors worth it. Simply put: he cares and it shows.
Honors Course: He grades like an honors professor and expects you to demonstrate good knowledge of the material. Tests consist of multiple choice and essay and are challenging so read the book and readings he posts. Really cool guy and makes class interesting. He refers to his favorite topics as sexy. Its pretty funny. :)
Well I had him for Honor's government and it was really difficult but I felt I have learned a lot. Be sure to go and talk to him as he will give helpful hints about how to do better on his tests and what he is looking for. Participate in the class and do te readings! He is really fun and entertaining!
The class is hard, but a lot of fun. Hesse is full of stories and interesting facts. I was never bored in class. Watch out for the essays on the tests though.
He makes class very interesting, it is just the material that is kind of hard. He is a super nice guy and fun to listen to! He is clear as he can be, just the material is sometimes confusing. The tests are pretty hard and read your book and go to the SI's...those are also helpful! He is a great teacher!
I was very impressed by this class, and I feel that everyone should make sure to get a Hesse class in before they graduate.
Dr. Hesse is my favorite professor at Northwest. This class isn't the easiest class ever but it is one of the best at the school. He is also one of the most knowledgeable about the subject matter. I really enjoyed this class and everyone should try to take it.
Brian Hess is probably one of the best professor's I've had at NWMSU. I don't even like Government or Politics but he makes them interesting. Plus he's funny and attractive. Makes it easier to pay attention in class.
Hesse is, bar none, the best professor I have had a class with at Northwest. He is an engaging and challenging professor with a genuine love for his students and what he does. He really knows what he is talking about and is eager to get your interest. With as much work as he gives, he expects the same from you. It isn't easy, but it's worth it!
Humorous, informative, and full of real world knowledge (ask him about the T-shirt parties in Africa, or his adventures in Ethiopia), Hesse is undeniably the best instructor I experienced acquiring my Bachelor?s. His upper division courses require real work to acquire an A, but it?s no less effort than he is giving. Take everything he offers! Now!
Amazing teacher. NWMSU is lucky to have someone of his caliber teaching at the campus. Take every class he offers and you will not regret it!
DO THE READINGS!!! There is a crap-ton of them, but 4/5ths of the test questions are over the readings he finds on the Internet. 3 100-question multiple choice tests, that he will tell you if you "get the big picture" from the readings you will be able to answer them.... FALSE! On a happier note, the paper is easy if you ask for help.
Hesse's classes are engaging, challenging and fun. I didn't do well at first b/c I had high school study habits. The secret: show up,stay engaged(can't FB during class or you'll miss much),put in study time outside class. He doesn't spoon feed you, but is very willing to help you. Overall a great teacher!Learned A LOT!
Best prof. i've had. Makes a boring class fun and kinda interesting. Just show up for class and listen, and do the online readings. Tells you what you need to know for the three 100 point test and for the final. I would definitely take him over the other guy who teaches this class.
Best professor I've ever had, and I'm an Ag Major. Very engaging. If you only want a good grade, I wouldn't take him. If you want to learn something, he is the better choice.
Best professor I have ever had! he makes boring stuff so interesting and inspiring! I would recommend every nw student to take his class! even if I am no longer in nw anymore i still miss his class a lot.
Definitely the best professor I've ever had. His class wasn't easy, but I think I learned more in his class than I have in all my other college courses combined. He's engaging, helpful, and overall a great professor.
Hesse is by far the most fantastic teacher you will ever have at NWMSU. He is wonderful!
After a brutal and boring round of Intro to Government with another professor I retook the class with Dr. Hesse. Government was not something I really cared for but Dr. Hesse made it entertaining and interesting.
I took American Government with Hesse and I enjoyed it a lot. I wouldn't say the class was easy by any means, but try not to miss class or you will be very confused. Also, he's super entertaining and very concerned for his students. If the class ever gets too tough he's super easy to talk to and does what ever he can to help you.
GO TO CLASS. You will be lost if you do not attend lectures. YOU READ ALL SEMESTER. Exams were filled with information from the lectures. Overall, his lectures are amazing and full of details and examples of his adventures to Africa.
Hesse's class is not easy, but he is an amazing and inspirational professor. He has a true gift and passion for what he does, and has a way of making you feel empowered to do good. There is a lot of reading but it's all relevant reading to today with information that will be useful to know later in life.
Awesome professor! Easy to talk to, doesn't dumb the material down, but will help you any way that he can. Very passionate about helping people and about politics. I loved that he presented every side of the political issues, not just his side. If you work hard for him, he will work hard for you. There are a ton of readings! Make sure to do them
Dr. Hesse is an awesome teacher with a lot of knowledge. His classes are hard. You have to read a lot of articles, but for his more specific classes, there are no textbooks. I took International Conflict Resolution and loved it! I definitely had to work for my A, but he is a great help and wants to see everyone succeed!
Great teacher and really good at relating topics to current events. if you do not read you will not do good in the class.
I'm not sure if I learned about Africa, or just imagined us going on an African safari together. He is very easy on the eyes, but the class is definitely worth it! He is very passionate his class which makes students passionate as well! Take African World if you get the chance!
If you are lazy DO NOT take him. Read and learn a lot. He is funny and be prepared for long tests. 80 questions and 15 pages.
You must like Government. You read every day. No textbook use. Hard grader, class averaged a D on research paper. Go to the SI because it helps if confused.
Hesse is an amazing professor. His tests are long and hard, but if you do the required reading before class and attend the SI sessions you will be successful in the class.
You need to do the readings for each class or you will fail the quizzes and tests. The whole class is based on the readings. The research paper was odd. Half the class didn't turn it in and the other half failed. If you read, you will pass the class. Hesse is excited for you to learn and be prepared for him to try to get the class involved.
Hesse is a great teacher and he really cares about his students. He does make you read, and for our class it was articles over big issues and current events. He gave us pop quizzes over the readings but they weren't that hard if you read them. He's very approachable and down to earth. His lectures are always involved and I looked forward to them!
Hesse is a great teacher! Be prepared to work for your grade in his class. You'll talk a lot about current events in today's politics. Lots of opportunities to get points! He makes everything really interesting and always finds a way to tie one subject in with the next one. You can tell he actually loves teaching and wants you to learn.
Hesse is very personable and likes to get students involved. He is super great outside of class and gives good feedback. You have to show up to class or you won't pass. His tests aren't easy and can be tricky, don't expect an easy A. There is plenty of extra credit opportunities so take advantage of those and you'll be set.
Read the assigned lecture materials, they are vital to passing the quizzes. Hesse often encourages discussion and enjoys people who participate. He is open-minded and enjoys one on one discussions with his students. He makes you work for the grade but he is invested in your success. One of my favorite professors.
Hesse was one of my favorite professors. He really makes his class interesting and he finds so much joy in teaching students. The only thing I had to do was read the textbook and actually pay attention in class.
Hesse is not a very personable professor. He'll ask if anyone has an announcements for the good of the whole. When you talk about your personal life, he'll say it's not relevant to the class. He is also rude when answering emails, amd there is so much work for his class. he's not as great as everyone says!
I am writing a review because Dr. Hesse cares so much about his students that he actually checks this site. Dr. Hesse has made a profound impact on my academic life at NW in a very positive way. His lectures are enriching and life-changing. Plus, he truly cares about who you are and your life outside of class. His classes are amazing and so is he.
Personally, I wouldn't take his class again for several reasons. He lectures the whole class and his powerpoints are very hard to follow. He also isn't very specific on his grading rubrics, I emailed him once to ask about something I believed I had done right and his response back seemed very rude to me.
He is amazing at his lectures and they are very entertaining class doesn't drag on. But you have big essays and tests that are very hard.
Hesse is super funny and and a good lecturer. I would take his class again- for anything other then American government. If in the past few years of politics have worn you, this class will destroy your mental health. There are no breaks between modern content and at one point class was listening to people get shot in the capitol building on Jan 6.
The lectures are entertaining but make sure you attend class throughout the semester. he will purposely try and drag your grade down so much if you miss class. he will give alternate and harder assignments for just you if you miss more than a couple classes and will give you different final assignments for your end of semester grade.
hes super conservative, and he will argue with you in class if you have different opinions. he is very inappropriate about sensitive topics and i leave that class angry almost every day.
Mr.Hesse is nice. However, if you struggle with tests or have test anxiety, that's basically all this class is. There are weekly quizzes on readings, and the readings take hours to do. His lectures are entertaining. The class is graded on a curve and you get extra credit for not missing a class.
I'm unsure how people got that he was overly Republican, I had a lot of great conversations with him and he's super open-minded to all opinions. One of the most personable professors I've had. As long as you do the work on time and pay attention you will excel. I could tell he really cared about his student.
Hesse's Intro to Gov class was very interesting and we talked about subjects that you didn't talk about in high school. He is a pretty tough grader and we took a lot of reading quizzes, but if you actually read the material you can find the answers very easily. You have lots of chances to bring your grade up with his many assignments.
Brian is amazing, I have taken all of his classes and I wish he had offered more. Once you get used to his lecture style, it isn't as difficult as many may think. Take bullet point styled notes with everything discussed, even reference pictures he uses in your notes, it helps. Show up, pay attention, and engage in the material. He knows so much.
He was one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is very conservative and tries to put those views on his students, even if he knows it or doesn't. His assignments are not always related to the topic and the reading are so lengthy and you can tell that he only chooses the conservatives answer for our Friday quizzes not the accurate answer.
He likes to know why students think what they do and often plays devils advocate to bring different perspectives into the class. Some find this uncomfortable since they might never had to support where they get their opinions. His lectures are amazing. He cares about his students. I found him to be challenging but fair. He loves teaching.
Hesse is a great professor. He knows what he's talking about and is very engaged with the class, & very funny. The class is lecture heavy, and there are long readings with quizzes 1-2 times a week. He provides many extra credit opportunities than can boost your grade, so there's no reason as to why anyone should get below a B in the class.
Such a great professor. Has very interesting stories to relate to certain topic discussions in class. Quizzes every Friday which aren't too hard as long as you really pay attention to the reading and take notes. Genuinely very passionate about what he does and really cares about his students.
Do not take Hesse. All of the other teachers are way easier than him and he is not worth it. He cares about everyone but studying for exams is near impossible as there are around 6-7 slideshows with 40 slides each that you are supposed to study. He does not offer any study guides and the exam portion of the exam is very hard.
Brian Hesse may be one of the best professors I have ever had. He is so funny and makes coming to his class a great experience. Some occasional readings, but overall not too much homework. Extremely personable. His lectures are fun and it is easy to catch on to the material. I 10/10 recommend him
I loved having Hesse as a professor. He loves what he is doing which is clearly shown in his lectures. His energy made it fun to be in class and learn. There are quizzes worth 5 pts that are based on readings outside of class and you had to read them to pass the quizzes. Overall his assignments were pretty straight forward and simple.
Good professor. Quite funny. Uses AI to create all of his lectures PowerPoints, with the AI stamp still being visible. Test are so incredibly easy, however they're very repetitive questions, get one wrong and more will follow. Cares for his class, and gives weekly quizzes. quite a bit to read, but you can just skim through. Pretty fun. Pretty easy.
Dr. Hesse is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are interesting, and he tends to throw in a lot of jokes to keep the class engaged. Does a great job of exploring both left-leaning and right-leaning sides when discussing politics.
I loved having Hesse. He is passionate, understanding, and very funny. You can tell he enjoys teaching his classes and is very interactive. It keeps you entertained for the whole class, and makes all the concepts very clear. Tests are so unbelievably easy.
