Brian is AMAZING! Extremely funny, very clear and super helpful...really wants students to do well. I recommend this course to anyone, even if you never took philosophy - SUPER prof! :)
Ive had many professors, and all I have to say that out of all my professors, brian has been BY FAR the best! He's clear, hes funny, hes adorable, and his main goal is for his students to do well!!! If you dont take this course-well then your dumb, and if you do take this course-YOU WILL NOT REGRET I
I'm in my first year so I don't know too many profs, but Brian really is amazing. He's made the course so interesting- nothing like the text! He's very funny and extremely intelligent. I'm so glad I decided to take the course- you should too! Oh, and he's good-looking! ;)
Brian is great professor, I just worry that he's going to fall off his chair because he keeps leaning back in it
Awesome teacher, does a VERY good job explaining the readings in detail. I didnt even read the book but i took LOTS of notes in his class and payed attention, then I just studied my notes and got a B+ on his test. He teaches with such clarity, I wish most of my classes were like this one
Brian is AWESOME! Open to the opinions of all. He is clear and simple. Good wit and sense of humour put him in another class. If you read this.....keep up the good work!
One ont the best profs ive ever had. I have never understood more in a lecture in my life. He really knows what he is doing.
By far the best prof. at York.
Brilliant person and professor and is actually interested in the thoughts and opinions of ALL his students. Keep it up m8. Doing a great job.
good prof and so helpful... but not enough easy in grading!
i am in love with brian, i think he is really hot which has always kept me focused in the lecture. He showed a lot of dedication to the class and he really seemed to care about his students and there well being. I have never had such an awesome prof, so thank you. I will be sure to keep in touch, via email...
AMAZING AND FUNNY, ONE OF THE BEST, U WILL NOT REGRET GOIN TO HIS LECTURES.
he's a great prof, he's knows his stuff, and explains it in clear simply terms, and has a good sense of humour.
he's pretty funny especially when others try to argue with him
great prof - really makes the lectures interesting.
greaaaat teacher.... love his examples
Best professor ever. Love his lectures, keeps me interested and really knows his stuff. His teaching is easy to understand and fair marking. Would take another class from him again.
Great prof. i'd take another course with him again. Great at explaining things in simple terms, good examples, great sense of humour. Always willing to answer questions after class, very encouraging and helpful.
kept it interesting & entertaining
very smart guy, will change your life. make u think about things we don't bother to think. inspirational personality, too bad he wont be teaching anymore!

Great Prof. He will always make time to meet with students. Always replies to emails. His lectures are really helpful and he really knows what he is talking about. He can make any subject sound interesting and he sincerely tries to help students achieve good grades.
Absolutely love this prof, no exams, simple quizzes and one page essays, blessing from heaven.
Brian is a great lecturer. He is hilarious and engaging but the TA that I had made the class impossible for me to stay in. It would've dragged down my GPA by quite a bit, so I had to drop it. There are also no participation marks, so that's too bad. Those are the easiest marks! Nonetheless, Brian is great, but the TA was a killer. Beware!
very talented at teaching. knows his material insideout. amazingly well at thinking on his feet. do all the one papers(5) well, and the one final essay, and you'll do well. he's one of the best.
Amazing prof. His lecture was the most enjoyable of all my first year courses. If you pay attention, and do the readings you should get a good mark. His short papers and essays are the only real possible difficulties. :)
This prof is wonderful. He only teaches metaphysics and epistemology which are hard courses, so the course itself is fairly difficult. He however is the best possible person to teach you these things. His teaching is clear and straight to the point, and his gading is fair and he does evenything he can to help you understand.
Great prof. Very clear. Tough marker.
He makes sure that you leave FULLY understanding the content being covered in class. Often when people do not understand, it's because they are not attentively listening, not open-minded and not reflecting on all the ideas being expressed during class regularly.
One of the best. He is BRILLIANT. Its not an easy course so be prepared to work.
An absolutely amazing professor. He presented his lectures in a clear and concise way. I would definitely recommend having him as your professor.
His phil-1000 will change your life forever, get his section- quizzes are hard AF
This professor is amazing! Its my first year and I honestly recommend taking this class if you are a first year student and interested in philosophy. REAL FUNNY, crystal clear, helpful, and easy to understand. Probably one of the only classes I really look forward to going to! :)
I thoroughly enjoyed the course. He was really helpful and clear. To make it short and simple, he made metaphysics look easy and understa dable!
Cool Prof! Is very enthusiastic in his lectures
Lectures are always presented in way to keep the class interested and constantly engaged with course material. A bit of humour here and there to keep the class from being dull. one of my favourite prof's out my 4 years at york!
By far my favourite prof of first year. I took philosophy as my elective and didn't realize how much I'd actually enjoy it. He made material very interesting, and had a great sense of humor I must say. There were no exams for this course, marks were dependent on online quizzes, short papers, and two essays. Very easy to do well.
By far my favourite prof of first year. I took philosophy as my elective and didn't realize how much I'd actually enjoy it. He made material very interesting, and had a great sense of humor I must say. Very easy to do well
Took the course as an elective for my first year. It's the only course that I actually really realllly enjoyed going to. He makes the class extremely enjoyable. Just hope you get a really good TA, because mine was terrible.
put of taking this course, cuz i heard he's a tough grader, he made up for it...i mean he's got a policy where u can send ur paper b4 deadline for his review as many times as u like! half way, thru the course, i realized I am learning so much i can't imagine graduating without his other (epistemology) course, which i can't tak cuz I am graduating!
Engaging prof. Very clear in his lectures. Fair in his markings. Classroom environment is excellent allows for debate and for you to present and support your arguments in class. Course set-up is good. And he was funny. As a philosophy student I feel the way he teaches is a good way to approach metaphysics and makes it easy to understand.
Amazing prof. If you're skeptical if philosophy is worth taking a course in I assure you this man can change your mind. Besides that the readings are overally wordy but the lectures are pure gold.
Huss is an excellent prof, I have had him for intro 1000 and metaphysics recently. He makes the most complicated philosophy manageable but you will have to work really hard to get a good mark. I will emphasize this he is a hard marker!! However you can email him for help so if you think you have an A paper email him and ask for thoughts on itALWAYS
The funniest professor I've ever had. Prof Huss gives an excellent in-depth analysis of the metaphysical debates and all implications of theories on any side of the debates. He has made me reconsider my philosophical position more than once and has proven that philosophy is not only hilarious, it is extremely fun. Would take Huss again.
My favourite professor by far! I looked forward to his class each week and was sad the weeks I didn't have it. For the assignments, he allowed us to e-mail him the assignments and he would read till he found a mistake then send it back telling us about the mistake, you could do this as many times as you want. He is hilarious and very passionate.
This man is God. Course is bearable, any undergraduate should definitely take his course! Loved it.
I've never had a prof like this. Huss is the best. It's hard to explain, but he really makes you want to understand things and then he makes you understand it! sO clear.
Really enjoyed taking his class. Makes everything super easy to understand and is a very knowledgeable guy. Great prof!
Inspired and piqued my interest in philosophy! Was there for me when I was having a quarrel with my TA, listened and took feedback seriously, and engaged the class in lecture. I would recommend this class to anyone who's seeking a general intro to philosophy. Very funny, charismatic man.
His class with him was probably the most enjoyable one in my first year. Very cool and relaxed environment in the class. His grading criteria were very clear and the quizzes quite easy. The best thing about the guy is his teaching style. The classes were structured in a way that allowed us to debate ethical issues, while he was devil's advocate.
Really funny and even gave a few inspirational speeches (at least I found them enlightening). Tutorials are not mandatory but lectures should be attended if you want to pass (quizzes are based on them). Overall, I enjoyed his class. :)
Wonderful guy. Puts up the text for free. Goes over material clearly and repeatedly until you can't possibly not know it. Thought-provoking and hilarious lectures. Generates interest in the material. If you follow his instructions directly, you should have no trouble getting an A/A+. He's not one to cheat you out of marks. One of my favourites!
What I love about Prof Huss is his attitude towards us. He knows he is popping our brains and he enjoys challenging us and see our eyes get wide open. After he shocks your system he checks on you asking questions like are you alight? Is this point clear to you? He cares about his students get out with something valuable. He is a real teacher.
Awesome teacher!!
One of the best courses i have ever had, and one of the best professors. The material that he uses is different from other professors and the way he presents it in class is very helpful and inspiring.
Best professor I had all year! You won't want to miss any of his lectures After this class I decided to minor in Philosophy This class requires you to write a few papers and quizzes. However, they are very simple. No Exam (final paper instead) A very fair class! Definitely take this course if you can! You won't regret it!
I would not recommend this prof. Currently in his class and do not enjoy it at all. Mediocre at best. There are much better choice at York U
You need to avoid this prof. All over the place. Marking is unfair and extremely picky. Lectures are boring, to say the least. Philosophy does not deserve this. Your philosophical perspectives will be punished. Avoid or face his incompetence
lecture wise he's ok since its never more than 2 hrs. However he marks really hard on the assignments, good luck getting an A on those
Brian is a very different prof to most. His class was very organic and we adapted the class to suit the needs and wants of students. The subject matter of the class can be quite difficult to grasp at times but Brian does a very good job of actually clearing up and working through any issues students may have with the subject matter.
THE BEST PROF EVER. Extremely knowledgeable, very fair, and really knows what he is doing. I put in little to no effort and still did very well in the course because of how well he taught in lectures. Amazing prof. AND HE IS SO SO SO FUNNY. Wish I could take him again...
NOT a good prof. He is sarcastic and rude. Consists of 5 short papers, 3 quizzes, and a final essay. Course load is simple for a third-year course but he is a tough grader and doesn't appreciate "fluff."
Brian is an amazing prof, very funny and interesting. Beware that this course basically has something due every week, whether that be a paper or a quiz. Although, I actually felt like I learnt something from this class and Brian. Take this course/Brian if you want to challenge yourself and actually gain some knowledge.
Would NOT recommend taking a class with him. The final assignment in his class makes no sense and he doesn't help. He's rude and does not care about the students. Completely regret taking his class!
AMAZING PROF!!!! So knowledgeable. His lectures were interesting and he was passionate about the content involved in this course. Would strongly recommend him for this course.
One of the best courses I have taken at York. The classes are interesting and the grading easy. Show up to class and participate in everyday issues of morality which I found to be very interesting. Don' need to buy the book as he puts up the pdf (he wrote it). It's a reasoning course and this prof will make stuff simple and fun to understand.
very good prof, very easy assignments. as long as you go to class and listen to what he says, you'll do just fine. This class is a dream for a procrastinator like me, easy concepts to memorize for quizzes and the short papers are pretty straightforward and don't take long. 10/10 would recommend.
I lovedddddddddd this class!!!! Way to go professor Huss! It was the best class I took and I am actually sad that it's over
Best course I've ever taken in university. I use the things he taught me in all my classes. Going to class is important cause he clearly tells you what he expects for quizzes/assignments. Go to class, listen to what he says, get an A+.
He is an all around fantastic guy and teacher. He's so easy going and simple. Amazing at explaining things that typically seem complicated as something so easy. Talks to you like you are his friend not a student. Course work is easy, just quizzes and a short paper. NO FINAL EXAM!
I would avoid him at all costs. He makes things harder then they need to be and is the worst professor I have ever had.
He is the one professor in the sem makes me don't want to skip an hour and a half lecture (even when it snows). Dark humour has proven. He does care about students and sometimes being sarcastic.
This teacher is completely useless. The topics for this class were all over the place and frankly I felt like I wasted 700 dollars on a class where I barely learned anything about philosophy psychology. If you want to take this class and think it is easy then do it but its the fact that the way he teaches can screw you up. He teaches like a monkey
Worse teacher I've ever had. He's a friendly but everything about him I hate. His teaching style isn't good, the artciles were pretty much pointless and the essays were impossible as you had to do the essays before he taught the lecture. People inturrpet the readings wrong a lot of the times. impossible to argue, teacher wiould attack no matterwhat
I've had positive and valuable experiences with his courses. lectures are helpful, keeps discussions lively and makes material simple to understand. I found him HILARIOUS but can come off as sarcastic to some. Hes VERY kind and fair when it comes to grading. he made me love philosophy even more. I'll tell you he really is one of the rare gems.
honestly I don't understand why people are saying negative things about Brian. the only issue I had with this course was short papers as we had to write them before lectures. but overall not a big deal because he graded them fairly. no matter how difficult the course, Brian makes it easy, and makes you think critically. he's one of the GOAT imo.
Brian is the best Philosophy professor at York. I have taken several courses with him, so from experience I can tell that the negative comments are from students who don't show up to lecture, don't pay attention, or are too stubborn to change their poor habits. He will change your perspective on life if you're willing to listen and learn.
He is definitely one of my favourite philosophy professor at York! Although he does tend to give out bi-weekly quizzes, they were pretty easy if you do the work. Brian is also a great lecturer, he was accommodating and easy to understand. He's also very nice!
LOVE this class. He's so nice and caring and there were 6 quizzes and 6 assignments and he took off the 2 lowest quiz marks off.
Easily one of the best PROFS I've ever had at york. I learned a lot, he was engaging, and when I talked to him outside of lecture for help, he was just amazing - kind, helpful, articulate, and respectful. I really wish I could take another course with him. I could go on about how excellent he was.
Amazing prof. Creates a very positive teaching environment where you're always passionate about attending his lectures.
Metaphysics can hurt your brain, but Prof Huss makes it fun. Text is broken down into several readings from a collection of Philosophers. Interesting pieces, some dense and harder to parse than others. Prepare and attend lectures. Reach out for help or guidance if need, he is responsive, gives actionable feedback and marks fairly if you put effort
This professor is amazing!! If you have him for a class, be ready for a good time. He makes learning philosophy so enjoyable and exciting.
Took this class in the summer and it was amazing. Professor Huss delivers the content in such an engaging way you can never be bored. If you have a chance to, take a class with this professor, you won't regret it.
He's the goat of profs imo, his phil lectures are peak, you just gotta involve urself, the TA's are pretty sub par though.
Very straight-forward, keeps you entertained with his humour, he demonstrates his knowledge of the course so well that he almost instantly knows how to respond to any question you throw at him and it helps you to not only be prepared for the quizzes but truly understand the difference between the right and wrong notions towards a philosophical view
Brian is a funny, approachable and knowledgeable lecturer. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures as the course content was so interesting and he picked a great textbook that was accessible. 98% of the grade is weekly quizzes that are only 4 questions and are open book so quite an easy pass, 2% is the course evaluation at the end. I recommend!
Easily one of the best profs I've had. Probably the most I've ever been engaged in a lecture. If he had one fault I would say he's too willing to answer questions from students, but really that's more on the students then him. If you're looking for a fun and interesting bird course then I would highly recommend PHIL 2080 with prof Huss.
I liked how this course was entirely quiz-based but he made up for that by docking major marks for minor errors. Got a lot of 80s on the quizzes, and a few 50s even after attending class, taking notes, and reading the textbook. My only issue with him is his pickiness when it comes to grading. Highly recommended, his lectures are out of this world.
Like going to church, such dynamic delivery. Would recommend this course to everyone. Really teaches you how to structure an argument, debate both sides, & find fallacies. Quizzes can be unforgiving, sometimes /6 (1-2 errors really bring your mark down), but you can drop the lowest 2. Do the readings, ask questions, read quiz questions carefully.
Looks like a promising professor when I first met him on day 1
no hate to brian as a person but this man loves arguing with students way too much. he very frequently entertains (quite frankly) irrelevant questions and it would take up nearly the ENTIRE lecture. sometimes i would leave the lecture more confused than i did entering it. he is funny tho i'll give him that i guess
I've always liked the highly respected Professor Brian Huss! Great guy! Truly the best in the business, and believe me I know the business! We love professor Huss, don't we folks!
Brian is the best prof i've ever had. engaging lectures, he is unbiased, he's witty funny and extremely intelligent, there's a simple grading scheme, if you do ur readings ask questions and listen to lectures u don't even have to “study” for the quizzes. ended up taking more of his courses this year after the lovely experience i had last yr
Super engaging and entertaining lectures that you won't wanna miss. Genuinely had the whole class laughing every time. Marks were based entirely on short quizzes which were fairly easy if you paid attention to the lectures.
Professor has a horrible work ethic, doesn't actually care about students whatsoever, funny person for sure but that's all. One of the worst professors. NOT accessible outside of class at all; if you think you're getting an email back or any help for anything, it isn't happening.
Brian's lectures are very engaging. The assignments were not very demanding.
Lebron James
Professor Brian Huss led engaging and interactive lectures, receptive to students' questions or comments. Everyday Ethics chapters were straight-forward and quizzes covered content discussed in-class. TA Nate Malcomson is an intelligent scholar and fair marker.
One of the best professors at York and deserves his rating. I took Intro to Ethics (PHIL2070) in the summer and even though the lectures were 3 hours, his teaching style keeps everyone engaged. Plays devils advocate of each ethical theory to give you a full understanding. Has his own book. Quizzes were easy, TA wasn't the most lenient though.
He was one of the most engaging professors I've had. He makes the material incredible accessible, and as a science/STEM student who had no previous experience with taking a philosophy class, I felt like the handouts were comprehensive, the lectures were easy to follow, and the tests were extremely fair.
pretty interesting course but he went off track too much which took away from lesson time. broke topics up in an easy to understand manner. clear expectations.
Walking into a Prof, Brian Huss lecture is like walking into Oracle Arena on February 12th 2000 to watch the All Star Dunk Contest. He's that good at lecturing. Course breakdown only involved short quizzes and short papers, both of which are very fair, marking is not hard either. Just come to lecture, you wouldn't want to miss it anyways its peak
Best prof I've had in my three years of study. you might have forgotten what 'teaching' actually means, and he's gonna remind you. test are easy if you pay attention in class and understand concepts.
Insanely reasonable. Didn't use a textbook - we used his book. He's a normal guy who knows his stuff and doesn't pretend to know what he doesn't.
