Very very nice man, easy to get along with.Go to class, likes puntuality and quizs
interesting teacher, great guy, easy course if you take time to do well

Definitely sexy!
Best CJ teachers @ GVSU. Awsome friend. Test are hard. read book.
My favorite professor. Really made class interesting.
very very nice guy, great prof. not so clear at first but just give him a little
Awesome.....
really nice and wants to be there.
AWESOME professor...has experience in what he teaches, has fantastic stories, knows what he's talking about...even though I was in a big class, he knew my name and asked about my life...GREAT TEACHER! Fave so far
Nice guy, very helpful. Knows what he is talking about.
He is a good prof, as long as you pay attention in class you can easily pass the class!
A very nice guy, really into criminal justice, very easy to work with
He's a great guy, knows his ****, you will learn something, tests are almost all multiple choice/ t or f. Good Prof.
GREAT GUY, really cares about his students. Tests aren't the easiest, but he's understanding, and will help you whenever he can. Take him. He's a great prof, and knows what he's talking about. Class is worth it with him.
Easy class, loves students who talk, interesting lectures, lots of info but keeps it very interesting. Easy enough grader, 3 hour class was fast/enjoyable, knows his stuff, very helpful and likes to get to know his students. Perfect for 201 class.
Tough grader, yeah nice guy but unforgiving on some things. Paper is tough, too many sources for no more than 10 pages
Really nice guy.
Johnson knows what he's talking about and will help you no matter what. Always worth while to go talk to and just shoot the breeze. He is a straight shooter that will not lead you wrong.
Prof. Johnson knows his stuff, experienced in many different CJ facets, take this course for eleective or for major he makes it enjoyable for "3" hrs, even tho we never went the whole 3. Tests are whats he says will be on study guide and he won't trick you. Best Prof at GV. Cares for students.
Very challenging class, but he's very interesting in his lectures. He's the only prof I've ever had where I can honestly look forward to going to listen to a lecture. His tests are multiple choice, but they're quite hard. Study alot and you'll do fine in his class.
On top of being incredibly sexy, he is one of the best profs. around. Tests are tough, know your notes. Lectures are interesting, but you have to remind him for a break once he is on a roll. Great guy, very interesting.
Very Detailed and hard tests. Questions came from book and not the lectures. Study guide had very little to do with test. Often forgot about quizes and didn't seem like he wanted to be there any more than the students did. Easy grader on papers. Over all he is a nice guy and was intresting but don't expect an easy A (or B).
I love Brian! He is very honest, has great stories to tell, makes sure you understand what you are doing. All of his tests are all multiple choice which seemed to work pretty well for me. I have never read all of my stuff for both classes, and I have achieved an A and A-. He grades very fairly on all papers and tests. A great guy and professor.
Very interesting class. He is very clear and the class has no suprises. All the material on the tests is usually from his lectures, so if you show up and pay attention you'll do fine. The one term paper assigned was no problem and he grades fair.
He is Awesome. A little disorganized, but all test material based on lecture. He is very understanding. Grade based on 3 tests (non-cumulative) and 1 paper 4-6 pages. Take him, he rarely goes the whole 6-9.
Great Professor! Best I've had so far while at GV. Understanding, Clear, and always willing to help you out. Take him and you will not regret it.
excellent professor. has a command of the material and keeps things interesting
Brian is a great prof, advisor, and just a decent human being. Very interested in the welfare of his students and really knows his stuff. I never want to take anyone else. :) Plus, he's funny and has great stories and friends EVERYWHERE in the CJ field.
awesome teacher
He is very, very willing to help students. As long as you pay attention and read, you'll get an A. He's super great.
Great prof. Really knows his stuff, really nice guy. Is willing to help any time. Funny guy if you have the chance to take his classes do it. You will enjoy any class he teaches.
I am in no way interested in policing but the class was okay. He tests over a large amount of material at one time and it is difficult to determine what is of importance. He gives study sheets that are terribly confusing and vague, they didn't help at all. He also give on line quizzes that are easy but he doesn't announce them so KEEP TRACK!
Hey, man, you don't talk to Prof.Johnson.You listen to him. He enlarged my mind. Hes a poet warrior in the classic sense. Sometimes you'll say hello to him. He'll just walk right by you. Won't notice you. Suddenly he'll grab you - throw you in a corner, and say, "Do you know that 'if' is the middle word in life? I'm a little man, he's a great man
Scoreboard. This guys has written more journals than I can count and yet he's the most down to earth person I've ever talked to. Three tests, one 10 p paper. Very clear. Take him if you can!
One of the most easy going and helpful CJ professors around. Knows his stuff, and is willing to work with anyone. Great sense of humor that makes the class fun. No way anyone can fail this class.
His class is pretty interesting, but a little difficult. Online tests are hard! Exams are hard as well! If you attend all classes, you should be fine. One complaint is that he never emails me back. Also, if you miss a deadline, you don't get a second chance.
Very easy going nice professor. two 3 page papers, 3 exams including the final which wasn't cumulative (with study guides that basically have the exam questions on them) and random online quizzes. he also offers A LOT of extra credit. He is very interactive with the class and made an effort to know names. Great guy, great class, easy A. Take him!
Prof. Johnson is a great professor. I had no interest in CJ before the class but I switched my major because of Brian. He tries to relate everything he covers to real world cases. Provides good examples from his past experiences. There are two papers which are easy, three tests that have study guides and a couple of online quizzes. Take this class.
Do not take a class with this prof. Due to a simple and understandable error, I missed the final. He applies rules to everyone without exception, and because of his inflexibility and despite a good reason, I was not able to take the test and my grade dropped from an A to a C. Especially for a CJ prof, he has a poor application of justice.
Very smart guy, almost too smart for the class. Hard grader and makes the tests and papers a little too challenging. I did alright in the class but I would try to get someone else for this class. Also does not email back very well, although he is very nice!
Take this class! Brian is an amazing professor and one of the nicest guys you will meet. It's a pretty easy class and there is no outside work except for a couple online quizzes.
Kinda boring class and way too easy. Johnson is pretty full of himself and too strict over minor issues.
This class is extremely boring, so be prepared for that. He assigns 5 random quizzes, 3 of them are attendance based. The quizzes and tests can be pretty tough so take good notes. What Johnson does right is explaining the material, it's just that the material can be so boring at times. Not much to take away from this class.
He knows his stuff very well. Participation didn't really matter but if you don't take notes you wont pass. Tests are pretty tough if you don't read or look over the powerpoints he uses. One long paper, 4 pages single space, he assigns the topic for you. You end up doing a short presentation on your paper at the end of the year. Not a bad class.
I took this as an online course. The assignments and grading are clear cut. Professor Johnson is helpful with answering questions and responding to e-mails. Quizzes and exams are a mix of items from the power points, notes, and the book. Multiple choice, but not necessarily easy.
Not enough good things can be said about this professor. He is knowledgeable, fair and personable. I found his lectures to be interesting and effective. Pay attention to his "put this in your notes" bulletin points of his lecture, those will not be found in the text. He engages students and makes you feel at ease. Tells dad jokes. Great professor!!
Professor Johnson really knows his stuff. Be ready to take notes because he only has the outline of his powerpoints projected. You must pay close attention while he is talking to take good notes. One big paper and presentation that you get to choose the topic for. Two exams. A few quizzes on the book chapters
I don't think I've met a more knowledgeable professor in my college career. Johnson genuinely cares about the students, at least the one's willing to talk to him. His classes aren't hard, just make sure you complete all assignments and quizzes. Although you have to twist his arm to get a straight answer from his emails, I would 100% take him again
Tough grader and does not respond to emails. Mistakes in the syllabus that he did not clarify. Tons of reading. Does NOT do audio with his powerpoints, ;left to interpret/ teach yourself. The material is not that difficult but its time consuming and tedious. Also there is a group project even though its an online only class.
Dr. Johnson is very knowledgeable with tons of great real world examples for CJ. Helped me a lot in applying for internships. However, he is very strict with a number of policies to make sure you show up to every class. For the essay that we did, the requirements are a minefield; read them through carefully to avoid any deductions.
One small paper. Weekly discussions/responses. Read and highlight through the chapters for the test, it is basically straight from the book but still hard. He posts TONS of content, and it sometimes comes up in discussions or a few questions on the test. Group project seemed clear, but was confusing. I put in half effort overall and got a B+.
Brian is a great guy who is very knowledgeable in the field he teaches. He is very passionate and gives great real-life experiences to topics discussed in class. He is known for having random pop-quizzes, which may damage your grade if you are not prepared. Overall awesome guy and professor.
Ask for help, he wants to! Understand information from the book - it is where most of the test questions come from (your notes may be more detailed then his - and should if U want to do well). He gives 5 quizzes (based on the book) and 5 attendance quizzes (you pass if there). Gives a research paper, u can do well if go to his office and seek help!
Great teacher. Cares about students.
For the online class, his exams are poorly written and I'm almost positive I get a majority right according to the material provided, but I end up getting a bad grade. He isn't clear in any of his explanations or instructions and his work is shotty. Very unimpressed with his teaching style and disorganization.
Professor Johnson communicates well. However information in the syllabus does not match the information he gives you and he doesnt always respond to emails. Not a lot of consistency in the course. But he is a fair grader and gives good feedback. Exams are very tough too.
Johnson was such an amazing professor! I have never had such a positive experience. He was insanely knowledgeable on the subject and very happy to share that knowledge with his students. He really wants to help you get a good grade and as long as you ask he'll give you all the help you need. If you show up and do your work you'll pass. I got a 96.
Honestly one of the worst professors to take for an online course. There's a big group project with three parts and he is extremely unclear in his directions. Hardly replies to emails even though it's an online course and is not helpful at all. Exams are unreasonably difficult. Stay away from this professor.
My man Brian. A real gem of a professor who must be protected at all costs. Just be prepared to stay awake in his lectures and you will be FINE.
I had him for an online class as well as a normal class in the same semester. He is a great guy and I loved his lectures. His tests are hard tho, to do well you must read the book and attend class. Online class with him was a ton of work and I did not do that great, would reccomend for an in person course but a do not take for an online course.
Don't take his online class. Exams are extremely confusing and its near impossible to get a good grade. Avoid.
Took for the online class. Exams are very hard unless you spend A LOT of time reviewing the readings and videos. There is a big group project which was not horrible but that scale of a project should not be given in an online class. Johnson is a very nice and respectful guy but the online class was not implemented very well.
Just don't take him with any ONLINE class. In class, he is a great professor. I had him for principles of security and he was great. However, he just doesn't know how to run an online class and it was so unorganized and theres a group project that was extremely annoying!
Best prof. 10/10. Lectures are engaging and interesting. If you're a CJ major I'm sure you're used to the long lectures, I wouldn't say it's anything out of the norm.
took this course online and plz avoid at all costs if you can. Way too strict on grading, I've never gotten grades this bad on assignments before he nit picks EVERY detail. So much reading and review material and organized in such a confusing and poor way. ruined my GPA that I worked so hard for on an elective course that I didn't even need :(
This was the first online class I had taken. I thought that it was going to be an easy class because it was online. However, this class was really tough. Your grade is made up of one paper, 3 exams, and a few discussions. Basically, if you want a good grade you have to get an A on all of the assignments which is nearly impossible.
This professor was one of the hardest professors I have taken. This class required a lot of work in order to receive a decent grade. The content was confusing, I still do not understand half of what I read. The homework was very time demanding, and the exams were almost impossible. Group project also contains over 5 people, difficult to conduct
I messed up on my length of my essay by half a page and he refused to even grade it. So make sure you look over rubrics before turning anything in. There are not a lot of assignments and tests so you have to do well on what is given to you.
I had him online the whole semester- he goes off-topic very often. strict on grading and late work. He expects you to read the whole chapter before the lectures - I think he had us do 2 papers this semester but they were heavy on research on the criminal systems in our area. He is slow to answer emails. Would not take again
Man of few words but the class was easy and informative.
This class was very challenging. The tests are hard and you have to tediously read the book in order to do well. No extra credit opportunities and the whole class is based off of 5 quizzes, 2 papers, 2 exams and a final. I still do not even know what i got on my finals because it isn't in blackboard. Very stressful class for a Gen-Ed.
I had Brian Johnson my first ever semester of (online) college. The instructions on how to turn an essay in were very unclear, so I did it to the best of my ability which happened to be incorrect. When I emailed him regarding the F, he told me employers would not tolerate my "inability to follow instructions". He is very rude and degrading.
I didn't really do much in this class. His lectures were very boring, he spoke very monotone and I literally did everything I could except pay attention. I got a C and I'm assuming that's only because I still did my assignments but I think if you actually go to class and do the work it'd be easier
Great man, really nice and lots of interesting stories based on experience in the field! No assignments on a normal basis, only lectures each week and the occasional quiz. The book helps a lot! Hardest part was the essay, which needs lots of clarification. First one is harder, second is easier once getting the idea. Would take again for sure!
Took this course as an online class and he posted pre-recorded lectures from previous years and would never hold virtual meetings. Would often make 10 question quizzes out of 100 points. Basically need to teach yourself everything in order to get a good grade
You can tell that this professor genuinely cares what he is talking about and is interesting in it. The problem at hand is that your entire grade is based off of 3 exams and one large final paper. He is also a really hard grader. Took this class as a gen ed and I really regret it. Please tell me why I have the worst grade in a gen ed class!!!
Lectures are pre-recorded, papers are expected to be written like its a writing class, quiz literally has grammar errors. Overall Brian is a sorry excuse for a professor. When proven wrong he will fall back on the book as a crutch on why he was right. Avoid taking this class at all costs.
This guy is an idiot.
He is very interested in what he is teaching but it is a difficult class because he does not explain well. Reads just off presentations but the lecture is pre recorded which is nice. LOTS of grammar errors on test. Hard class due to the fact he is very hard graded and you get graded only off two papers and rest quizzes and test.
This class was overall a good class. The lectures were very booting because it was him just reading off PowerPoint slides but he did his best to make it interesting. He curves pretty much every test you will take. Would recommend him as a professor
Had a group project where the requirements were vastly different depending on if you looked on the syllabus or the instruction sheet he gave you. Gave poor feedback. His lectures are decent but can be sometimes condescending
Worst professor I've ever had. Way too much work for an online class. Instructions were never clear and sometimes they'd be completely different depending on if you're looking at the syllabus vs course schedule vs guidelines. Responses to emails were confusing and never clear. You're going to have to email him multiple times to get a decent answer.
I took this class online. Never got responses to ANY of my emails (after following up MANY times). The blackboard site is mixed up, nothing is in order, no clear instructions, and most power points have grammatical errors. I don't think he knows how to teach an online class. Seems like he might be better in person?
warning do not take this professor, at least online. we had to take all tests on respondus although he said tests were open book and open note we were required to print out everything we had for the test. he is not understanding whatsoever pls just avoid this at all costs honestly
Very little to no guidance is given throughout the course. He is not good at responding to emails. My group was marked down for "being too ambitious" with our timeline task. I did not know you could get marked down for striving for greatness. Save yourself from a lack of clear guidelines and sign up with a different professor.
Avoid his online classes at all cost. He must be better in person but online was nearly impossible. Never communicated back to us even when we sent him numerous emails. Gave every group member a different grade for one assignment even when we all submitted the exact same PDF. Unclear instructions. "Open book" tests meant print out pages in the book
He was ok. My biggest complaint was that during lectures, he would say "put this in your notes", then proceed to go on a 5 minute tangent, without making it clear what to put in our notes. Exams are open note & open book. A lot of good material covered, and he is a nice guy. Some of the topics covered are pretty random.
was good at teaching and made the exams and quizzes easy to do by giving us good study guides, attendance is not mandatory but he does take down attendance at times. Overall, he is a great prof, and it's an easy class if you just put in the right amount of effort. There's no hw except studying. There are only two papers 3 exams and about 5 quizzes.
This professor was amazing! He posts PowerPoint slides and goes over them in class and will tell you what to write down "for testing purposes. There are 3 exams (including the final), 2 APA style papers 2 pages long, and 5 quizzes. His study guides are very thorough and easy to follow through, and making a quizlet definitely helps for exams!
During my in-person course with Professor Johnson, he was much more responsive and willing to help than he was in an online course. The class is very textbook and lecture based, and he writes his own exams. He did mention that he is trying to improve his future online courses. Make sure to pay attention in class, his PowerPoints have fill in blanks
Very good guy, except he doesnt teach well and expects you to know what he is talking about. He rambles constantly, but I really appreciate the help he gives to his students and he is more like a dad than a teacher.
Good luck with "Dr." Johnson. Terrible grammar (constantly says "I's"), your grade is based on attendance (which only hurts you) and mostly just two exams. He doesn't believe in extra credit and wants his students to get bad grades. Also, each quiz will be hidden in a random folder and nothing will inform you of where they are.
"Dr" Johnson is a decent teacher at best, its not very difficult to do his job all that is required is to read a lecture PowerPoint. There was not a single class that wasn't a PowerPoint best yet the lectures will have nothing to do with the final. The final is all book based and he made no effort to include book based information in lectures.
The class was mostly self taught and I found it extremely difficult.
This class was a seminar style where we would just discuss our readings for the week. We met once a week and our only assignments were a resume and cover letter. Professor Johnson always told funny stories and cares about his students.
The lectures are mostly PowerPoint slides, but the professor does a good job of explaining the material. The exams and quizzes are manageable with the study guides provided. unstuck study was a helpful supplement for review.
Please don't take this class. Maybe if it weren't online I'd have better luck but there were 2 professors for this class and they never posted any announcements, didn't answer emails, and there were no assignments except for 1 project and exams. If you do bad on 1 exam you're screwed. TON of videos and notes but profs don't do any actual teaching.
I'm sorry but avoid him. literally doesn't care about students and cant acknowledge that he has no work to do but expects students to do the absolute most. i taught myself this whole class and didn't take anything away from it. this is not a 400 level class OR in person and he is not understanding of how difficult it is to navigate an online class.
Took class for Gen Ed. He's great and caring but he does rambles and it just feels like a lot of unneccesary information. Tests were difficult for me as I didn't know if I should focus on info from the textbook or from the lecture. He always told us the class would be very easy but it felt tedious - mandatory attendence policy sucks too
He's a decent teacher at best. You'd gain the same information from his PowerPoints at home than if you attended his class, but attendance will kill your grade. Also make sure you can see into the future to make sure no family/health issues arise… really killed my spirit and made me uncomfortable showing up to class.
I advise those who are not a CJ major to pick a different professor. His lectures were good but the readings he would provide were very difficult to dissect and understand, especially as someone who does not read over legal documents on a regular basis. Quizzes and tests are very difficult even if you complete the weekly requirements.
Brian is a great professor, for the most part. There are four exams total through the semester in CJ101 and two papers. These are the only grades you will receive. He takes attendance every class and will knock you down points if you don't show up. Make sure you read the textbook; this will help you the most during the exams.
the most unnecessarily hard online cj elective I have ever taken. waste of time. didn't learn anything bc i had to teach myself everything. very rude when answering emails and doesn't seem like he wants students to do well. my whole group project was struggling in this class. just avoid him unless you want to only be graded by like 5 things.
Would not recommend. It was online and most of the class was just read and watch lectures, with a tough group project and worse exams. I had to work the day and entire time period of the exam and when I asked for extra time he told me I was making an entitled request and that my email was "totally confusing". Unprofessional, yet highly pretentious.
He wasn't a bad professor; he just rambles a lot of the time so it can get confusing for the tests on what lecture info to study on. Very strict attendance and never really answered my emails about me being sick and having a doctor's note. Test questions were a bit confusing or misleading, which made it difficult at some points to get it correct.
Don't take him if you can avoid it. He rambles a ton, and it's never relevant. He's strict on attendance which is annoying cause his lectures are boring and not helpful for the exams. He has so many spelling and grammatical errors in his slides. He's rude in his email replies too. I could go on about this omg I really wish I didn't take this class.
Professor Johnson is a talented lecturer, but he gets too sidetracked and rambles sometimes. Reading the textbook before each class is definitely mandatory. Has 7 grades in the grade book: 4 exams 2 in-class papers and attendance - not a lot of room for error. He fell behind in his lectures due to weather/rambling, did not cover everything.
By far one of the worse professors I have ever had he does 2 exams one Podcast group assignment that has nothing to do with the class or anything 5 quizzes he talks about nothing relating to the actual exam or anything his power points are awful and if you cannot do the group activity he makes it seem like it is only your fault and no one else.
Brian is very knowledgeable and passionate, and keeps discussions very open. Textbook is written by him, so you don't have to worry about reading random extra stuff and not knowing what is important and what isn't. The group podcast sounds like a lot, but is actually very manageable even with a busy schedule. He can ramble sometimes. Took in person
